What we like about it: The lightweight Alpha Silver Aluminum frame combines durability and fun into one kid’s bike. It will be one of your great tools for parent-child activities.

What we don’t like about it: The monotone solid color paint may not satisfy your child’s colorful childhood.

Rating: (4.7/5)

Trek Precaliber 20 / Purple Abyss

Introduction

When we first saw the bike, our first thought was whether it would keep children safe on green grass, leafy trails, or park rides. We wanted the Trek Precaliber 20 to be a kid’s bike that could perform and keep children safe at the same time.

The frame of the Trek Precaliber 20 is Alpha Silver Aluminum, a practical and lightweight frame material for growing kids, and it’s not overwhelmingly expensive. Kids’ Satellite pedals make us feel safe enough to trust the Trek Precaliber 20 on flat roads or slightly bumpy park trails.

While some might think we’re unreliable as adults reviewing kids’ bikes, you might not think we’d get kids to volunteer as our little reviewers.

We conducted a three-month long review for the safety of children. The bike accompanied Jack (our little volunteer and my nephew) through a challenging hill ride for kids.

The smiles we saw on Jack’s face as he rode, and the determination in his eyes as he tried, made us feel the deep bond between Jack and the Trek Precaliber 20. Yes, the Trek Precaliber 20 brings Jack joy.

I think the Trek Precaliber 20 will not only bring the children a happy childhood, but also make the parents of the children feel happy.

Here’s our breakdown of the Trek Precaliber 20’s general riding performance, “adventure” rides, key features, components, and specifications. If you want to learn more about kids’ bikes, check out our review.

Trek Precaliber 16 Review – Pure Kids Bike

General Riding Performance

Trek Precaliber 20 Crystal White

We know that one of the most important things most parents look for in a kid’s bike is its safety. When we did the actual ride, we reviewed all the data and its stress resistance.

According to the data, you can trust the Trek Precaliber 20’s lightweight Alpha Silver Aluminum frame to resist stress. The performance of its Coaster brakes is also very responsive and interesting.

In addition, the Trek Precaliber 20’s tire data shows that its rolling speed and abrasion resistance are such that you can trust your child to go riding.

In order to get a better feel for the Trek Precaliber 20, I asked my sister’s family for permission and then talked to their son, Jack, about letting Jack go on a real-life ride while we followed up.

At first, to familiarize Jack with the Trek Precaliber 20, we took it for a ride on a road in a small town where there were no people. The road was flat, but there were two turns, which I was very worried about, but Jack was very confident in his attempt. After all, he is a skilled bike rider, but I gave Jack plenty of protection and encouragement.

In about 15 minutes, Jack rode the Trek Precaliber 20 fast to the destination. He was so excited that he even wanted me to give him the Trek Precaliber 20 as a gift for his next birthday. I gladly agreed.

Jack’s feelings

Jack happily told me that the Trek Precaliber 20 turns smoothly, the tires are nimble in their steering and the pedals feel comfortable on them. Not only that, but the Trek kid’s single-speed grip felt easy and fit him very well.

I kept up with him and I found that the steep seat tube angle (72°) and head tube angle (70°) of the Trek Precaliber 20 allowed Jack to stay comfortably upright for the ride. This is great for a child his age I think, and it is doing a great job of protecting his spine.

Not only that, but Jack told me that the brakes on the Trek Precaliber 20 are very interesting, with the ability to brake by just pressing back on the pedals. He found the brakes to be very stable and that he would not be unable to brake in time because he was not strong enough.

Both in terms of the numbers and Jack’s riding experience, the Trek Precaliber 20 is a great toy that will bring joy to childhood.

“Adventure” Riding

It is important to understand that children are very curious, and no one can curb children’s exploration of nature and life. My nephew Jack is also such an energetic and curious child.

We were going to review the Trek Precaliber 20 step-by-step, but our Jack couldn’t wait to take on the small uphill slopes of the park. What we didn’t expect was how well the Trek Precaliber 20 performed on this little uphill incline of 4 or 5 degrees. It took Jack less than 2 minutes to ride up and he told me that he used to need his mom’s help when riding this trail, but this time he rode it alone and with ease.

This is thanks to the Trek Precaliber 20 with Bontrager XR1 kids MTB tires. 20×2.5” tires can be considered kid-sized mountain bike tires. fast to gain speed quickly and to maintain power in corners and uphill.

One might think that the Bontrager XR1 Kids MTB tire would be heavy, but it’s actually very light, due to the tread pattern that reduces its tire weight.

Not content with that challenge, little adventurer Jack asked to go on the park trails. The weeds were overgrown and there would be rocks on the trails. For Jack’s safety, we did a cleanup, and although it looked much cleaner, it was quite a challenge for both Jack and the Trek Precaliber 20.

Jack’s Challenge

This challenge was not as easy as it could have been. 8-year-old Jack is not as comfortable on the bike as he could have been. I saw Jack a few times as he turned downhill with some obstacles, but fortunately, Jack made it safely to his destination.

Although the challenge was a little tough, Jack’s perseverance in not giving up showed me that this little man is shining. Jack told me that the brakes on the Trek Precaliber 20 were not only fun, but also quick and stable. He doesn’t think he’s skilled enough to handle the bike, but both the tires and the brakes give him a great sense of security. This will become his favorite kid’s bike.

Yes, the Trek Precaliber 20 tells us it’s worth it, both in terms of riding experience and real data testing.

Key Features

Trek precaliber 20 frame.

Trek Precaliber 20 Frame

The Trek Precaliber 20 safe paint material gives parents peace of mind. The solid paint colors are indelible colors of childhood. My nephew, Jack, thinks he would like it better if the car paint had more color mixes. I think this is a worthwhile suggestion for children with a head full of color.

The Alpha Silver Aluminum frame of the Trek Precaliber 20 is strong, rust-resistant, and long-lasting. In fact, I think Trek engineers have innovated Alpha Silver Aluminum so much that it could even take Alpha Silver Aluminum to the next level with carbon fiber. I think Jack will be able to leave this Trek Precaliber 20 (which will look like new when properly cared for) to his sister or brother when he grows up.

Not only that, but Trek is as sweet as ever, and like all Precaliber bikes, we can see that the Trek Precaliber 20 has a lower frame. This makes it easier for kids to stand up and get on and off the bike, and adds a layer of safety for them.

In addition, when we received the Trek Precaliber 20 we found that it came with a stand and a saddle with integrated handlebars. If you think that’s it, you may have underestimated the Trek Precaliber 20.

You can also replace the saddle’s integrated handle with an integrated light mount to improve visibility and keep you safe, even when you’re on a family adventure or solo hike.

The right bike geometry is not only for adults, but also for children. In this respect, we pay more attention to the geometry of children’s bikes, because it is important for their developing and growing bodies.

We can see that the geometry of the Trek Precaliber 20 is designed to fit the physiological characteristics of children. We notice the proper head tube angle (70°) and the steep seat tube angle (72°) of the Trek Precaliber 20 this allows kids to keep a comfortable upright ride without bending the spine and causing injury.

Also, I noticed the almost perfect reach (31.2cm) of the Trek Precaliber 20, which allows most kids to stretch their arms freely while riding. This not only reduces fatigue, but also effectively promotes the growth of the child.

The lower five-way height (23.8cm) can effectively lower the center of gravity, which makes it easier for kids to keep the lower plate stable when facing downhill.

In short, the most important performance of children’s bikes is not to hinder children’s growth as well as to ensure their happy growth. I can humbly say that the Trek Precaliber 20 is doing a good job.

Components and Specifications

Alloy linear-pull brake and coaster brake.

Braking is extremely important both for adult bikes and kids’ bikes. On a kid’s bike I would use 200% of my energy to see what the brakes can do.

I have to say, Trek really lives up to its name in the bike industry. In this children’s bike, there are two kinds of brakes: 1, Alloy linear-pull brake; 2, Coaster brake. I would like to introduce this in points.

First, let’s take a look at the Alloy linear-pull brake. This brake is very simple, as long as you press the controller on the handlebar you can squeeze the bicycle tire to stop rotating. It requires enough force, which may be difficult for children who are not strong enough.

Next, we look at the Coaster brake. This brake usually requires less maintenance than other brakes. There are no cables on the handlebars, which makes the bodywork clean and simple. Whether it’s slowing down or braking, it doesn’t take much effort and can also exercise the flexibility of the kids’ legs.

Some people think that the Coaster brake may not be as sensitive in the rain, but we know that the Trek Precaliber 20 is a combination of Alloy linear-pull braking and Coaster brake braking. They complement each other and make up for each other, just like adding double protection, to a certain extent you can feel free to let your children to ride freely.

Trek Precaliber 20 Tires

On the bike, we also look at the tires. We looked at the Bontrager XR1 tire for the Trek Precaliber 20.

Not only is it kid-friendly, but it’s also more wear-resistant and even comparable to the adult version in terms of traction. In actual riding experience, we found that even on rougher trails, the XR1 tire provides enough grip because of its reliable tread pattern. At the same time, the reduced weight allows it to maintain power even in corners and uphill.

If you want enough traction and wear resistance, be sure to set your bike’s tire pressure correctly. This will ensure that your family’s baby is more comfortable and has easier handling while riding.

Do not miss out on the Trek Precaliber 20 if you are starting to get interested!

What do we like about it?

  • Alpha Silver Aluminum frame for durability, even for younger siblings
  • The combination of dual brakes for extra safety.
  • Comfortable grip to reduce fatigue.
  • The thoughtful geometric design can ensure the fun of children while riding, and also ensure the healthy growth of children.
  • With the design of the stand, you can always stop anywhere you want to stop.
  • The installation of lights can improve visibility.

What don’t we like about it?

  • The dazzling childhood wishes there could be more dazzling colors.
  • The vacuum tires are not ready.
  • What is the frame of the Trek Precaliber 20 made of?

The frame of the Trek Precaliber 20 is made of Alpha Silver Aluminum.

  • What is the age of the Trek Precaliber 20?

The age of the Trek Precaliber 20 is 6-8.

  • What is the tire size of the Trek Precaliber 20?

The tire size of the Trek Precaliber 20 is 20 x 2.5”.

Accessories

Compare tables, trek precaliber 20 vs schwinn sting-ray 20″.

Schwinn Sting-Ray 20"

In fact, I was attracted to the overall retro design of the Schwinn Sting-Ray 20″ as soon as I saw it. The red and blue paint colors are very attractive. Although they are also solid colors, I have to say that these two colors irritated me.

The paint color satisfied me, but I have to say that the brakes, the Schwinn Sting-Ray 20″ Coaster brake has the same fun. As I said before, these brakes are difficult to handle in the rain, and the Schwinn Sting-Ray 20″ is not equipped with Alloy linear-pull brakes, which greatly reduces the safety of the brakes.

I think the rigid frame of the Schwinn Sting-Ray 20″ is just as strong, but it’s also bulkier. Schwinn Sting-Ray 20″ is 31.96 lbs heavier than the Trek Precaliber 20 at 9.93Ibs. which may not be as easy for children to control. So this may not be as easy for children to control.

On the contrary, the Trek Precaliber 20 is $120 cheaper in terms of price, double braking, and more wear-resistant tires. If you’re looking for a good value for money, take a look at the Trek Precaliber 20.

Trek Precaliber 20 vs Polygon Premier 20-inch Kids Bike

Polygon Premier 20 inch Kids Bike

In terms of price, the Precaliber 20 is $20 cheaper than the Polygon Premier 20-inch Kids Ultralight Urban Bike. Kids Ultralight Urban Bike weighs 1.03Ibs, which is the same.

If you look at the Polygon Premier 20 inch you’ll see that it’s not really that different from the adult bikes. It has the same aluminum frame and is ready for jumps and breaks. Not only that, but it comes with a 1×7 drivetrain, which may not be enough for adults, but it’s enough for kids. It is equipped with a child-specific v-brake, set with a smaller brake lever that can fit smaller hands.

To be honest, if it wasn’t for its official description that the Polygon Premier 20 inch is suitable for children from 6 to 8 years old, I would have thought it was a youth bike and wouldn’t have thought of it as a kid-friendly bike.

While I’ve written enough about the Polygon Premier 20 inch, I’ll also talk about the Trek Precaliber 20. It doesn’t make me mistake it for a youth bike, and the actual experience in the previous article makes me not want to go over and over again praising it. I think the Precaliber 20 is a true kid’s bike, both in its design and in its geometry considerations, which have been made with the safety of children in mind.

If you want to spend less than $20, you should try the Trek Precaliber 20.

Trek Precaliber 20 vs Haro Flightline 20 Plus

2021 Haro Flightline 20 Plus

It’s hard to believe that the Haro Flightline 20 Plus uses the New Shimano Tourney MF-TZ510 7-spd for its drivetrain. To say that the Haro Flightline is a kid’s bike is an understatement, I think it should be called a youth bike. 2.6” wide tires can be used not only for flat roads but also for less technical trails.

Both are aluminum frames, and the Precaliber 20 is $100 cheaper than the Haro Flightline 20 Plus. In my actual review experience, I think the Precaliber 20 is more suitable for children from 6 to 8 years old, and the Precaliber 20 does a more comprehensive and safe job in terms of braking. Haro Flightline 20 Plus’s v-brake may not start smoothly for children with less strength.

Considering the suitability for 6 to 8-year-olds and the safety of the price, I think you can try the Precaliber 20.

Trek Precaliber 20 vs Kona Makena

2022 Kona Makena

The Kona Makena has only one paint color option, which I think is not enough. The Precaliber 20 has more paint color options.

The climbing ability of the Kona Makena is also relatively high, thanks to its 2.6” tires that have more grind and grip.

However, I noticed that the Kona Makena uses Tektro V-brakes. Although the braking force is not weak and it is easy to disassemble, I personally do not like the V-brake. For children’s riding, I am more concerned about safety and stability.

So, I prefer the Precaliber 20, because of course, the Precaliber 20 is $100 cheaper, not only for its braking and riding experience, but also for its thoughtful geometry.

For a cost-effective kid’s bike and a safer kid’s bike, you can really try the Trek Precaliber 20!

Should I get a single-speed bike or a geared bike?

Single speed bikes are usually much cheaper than bikes with gears, but that’s not the only reason to consider a single speed bike. Some kids simply aren’t coordinated enough to tackle gears when they are tall enough to ride a 20 inch bike.

Geared bikes can add a lot of complexity to a child’s overall biking experience. Knowing when to shift and when not to shift is a skill that even many adults are still trying to master.

Shifters and derailleurs that come along with geared bikes can be quite finicky and often require pricey repairs. So unless your child needs gears to tackle hills or longer-distance rides, single-speed bikes are not only less expensive, they are much easier to maintain.

Guardian Bikes 20 Single Speed

Innovative SureStop Braking System

7-year-old riding Guardian Ethos 20" Small bike in black and red

  • MSRP : $289
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 21.3″ – 26.8″
  • WEIGHT:  20.7 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Guardian’s patented SureStop braking system allows kids to brake faster, safer, and with less effort!
  • FULL REVIEW :  Guardian Bikes 20″

From their low-center-of-gravity designs and lightweight frames to their impressive SureStop braking system, Guardian’s bikes offer a unique and fun riding experience. Guardian’s patented braking system not only makes braking safer, it also makes it more fun!

The SureStop braking system works by preventing the child from accidentally activating just the front brake (which can cause the front tire to stop too quickly and buck the child off the bike). Think of SureStop as anti-lock brakes for bikes!

As an added bonus, Guardian Bikes are great quality, ridiculously easy to assemble, and offer fun and colorful designs that kids love.

The Guardian 20″ small is only offered as a single speed, and is slightly smaller than Guardian’s 20″ large bike, which has gears.

R etrospec Koda 2 Plus 20

Dual hand brakes and NO coaster brake for a super low price

Girl riding Retrospec Koda 2 Plus single speed in the street

  • MSRP : $179
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 21.5″ – 27.5″
  • WEIGHT: 23.7 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Solid quality dual handbrakes, and NO coaster brake!
  • FULL REVIEW : Retrospec Koda 2 Plus

Dual hand brakes and NO coaster brake for under $200? It’s a miracle! The Retrospec Koda 2 Plus 20’s braking system offers brake levers that are easy enough for small hands to pull, and stopping power that’s quite respectable. We were honestly shocked to find such a solid braking system at this price point.

Offered in several bright color combinations, this Koda has a retro flair that’s cool and comfortable to ride. When your kid is on the smaller end of fitting on the bike, make sure to rotate those handlebars down to make them easier for little ones to reach. But even so, they may need a little time to adjust to the wide handlebars.

Note: While the brakes work great once adjusted, we did have to adjust the front brake before it worked properly.

REI Co-Op REV 20 Single Speed

Lightweight bike with 1 year free, basic maintenance

Child racing her REI REV 20 kids bike

  • MSRP : $279
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 21.9″ – 27″
  • WEIGHT: 22 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Lightweight bike offering great quality for the price
  • FULL REVIEW : REI Co-Op REV

*IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: We do NOT recommend using this bike with the included training wheels. Several customers have recently left reviews on REI’s website indicating that the training wheels can loosen and come off while a child is riding. While this was not our experience, we trust that it has been theirs.

The REI Co-Op REV single-speed is a great choice for neighborhood riders in the mid-range price point. Significantly lighter than other bikes in its price range and without the complexity of gears, the REV single speed offers a lightweight aluminum frame backed by REI’s bullet-proof warranty. With narrower street tires with minimal tread, the REV is not suitable for non-paved trails.

The updated 2022 model features a riser handlebar that can be rotated towards or away from the rider to more accurately fit smaller and taller kids. As a result, it’s a much better fit than the previous model of this bike. Be aware that like most kids bikes in the $200 price range, the REV does have a coaster brake, but it also has a good-quality rear Tektro handbrake that works quite well.

REI offers 1 year free basic maintenance for any bike purchased at its stores or online.

Polygon Premier Ultralight 20

Great performance for paved or light trails – 7 speed

6 year old riding the Polygon Premiere 20 inch kids bike

  • MSRP : $249
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 21.25″ – 27.25″
  • WEIGHT: 20.75 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Great build for a pretty great price, Kenda multi-terrain tires, Shimano 7-Speed grip shifter, lightweight
  • FULL REVIEW : Polygon Premier Ultralight Kids Bikes

Polygon Kids bikes are newer to the US, and the Polygon Premiere will certainly impress you from the moment you take it out of the box. From its brightly colored graphics to its kid-friendly geometry and solid-quality components, the Polygon Premiere is everything a great kid’s bike should be, at a price tag parents will love.

While the Polygon isn’t quite as light as other bikes on our list and doesn’t have as high-end components, what you get for the price is impressive. If you have less than $300 to spend and are looking for a geared 20″ bike, you won’t get a better bike than the Polygon.

BEST NEIGHBORHOOD 20 INCH BIKE

What We Look for in a Neighborhood Bike

Bikes for kids who mainly ride around the neighborhood should be lightweight, easy-to-ride, and provide a comfortable riding position for the rider.  The average child rider doesn’t need a lot of gears or suspension or other extra add-ons that require maintenance and greatly increase the overall weight of the bike.

Keep it simple here – what your child needs is a dependable, durable, and fun bike to help them explore the neighborhood. Do they need gears? Many kids this age won’t even use gears if they have them, so unless you will be tackling hills frequently, a geared bike is a bonus, but certainly isn’t necessary.

Guardian Bikes 20 Inch 6-Speed

Innovative SureStop braking system

6 year old girl riding Guardian 20 inch bike with gears

  • MSRP : $319
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 22.5″ – 28.5″ (both models)
  • WEIGHT: 22.9 lb.
  • GEARS : 6-speed
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Proprietary braking systems help kids brake with more control
  • FULL REVIEW :  Guardian Bikes 20

Shark-Tank-funded Guardian Bikes come with a proprietary braking system called SureStop that prevents unsafe braking. When braking with just the front hand brake while at high speeds, bikes can tilt forward and buck a child off the bike and over the handlebars.

SureStop on Guardian bikes prevents this by having only one brake lever engage the front and rear brakes. Not only it is the safest system on the market, but it’s also much easier to use than most traditional dual-hand brakes.

These 20″ bikes offer incredible quality and riding experience for a price that really can’t be beat, and are offered in several kid-friendly colors and designs. The 20″ Large is only offered with 6-speeds, and is slightly larger than the single-speed 20″ Small.

Priority Start 20″

Simplified 3-speed shifting, modern styling, maintenance-free belt drive

young boy riding a blue priority bicycles 20 inch kids bike

  • MSRP : $379
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  22″ – 28.5″
  • WEIGHT:  19.5 lb.
  • GEARS : 3-speed
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : 3 gears for an easy intro to shifting, low-maintenance belt drive
  • FULL REVIEW :  Priority Start 20″

Staying true to their innovative beginnings , the Priority Start 20″ offers the simplicity and easy maintenance of a single-speed but with the gearing options of a traditional geared bike.

With just three-gears housed in an innovative, internally-geared hub, the Priority Start 20 has gears, but without the traditional bulky and finicky derailleur. It’s also a much simpler introduction to shifting on a child’s first geared bike!

Combined with a lightweight frame and grease-free belt drive, the Start 20 is the perfect “Goldilocks” bike for the average everyday rider – not too basic, not too complex, but just right.

Specialized Jett

Super comfy ride, trigger shifters

6 year old riding 20 inch Specialized Jett bike

  • MSRP : $350
  • WEIGHT:  17.6 lb.
  • GAIN RATIO : 2.0 – 6.3
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Comfortable saddle, wider tires provide a smooth ride, kid-friendly trigger shifters
  • FULL REVIEW :  Specialized Jett (24″ Review)

The Jett is a vast improvement on Specialized’s original neighborhood bike series for kids – the Hotrock. Exceptionally built to offer a comfortable riding experience, mostly everything about the Jett is an upgrade from earlier days.

The Jett’s smooth rolling tires have extra width to provide extra cushion, and the padded saddle has been a surprise hit with our kid testers.

The gearing system was designed with a nice range for climbing hills or gaining speed on flat ground, and features easy-to-use trigger shifters that make changing gears a breeze. To top it all off, the Jett’s responsive handbrakes stop on a dime, and there is NO coaster brake!

While the Jett is marketed as a bike that offers extended growth for kids, we didn’t find that to be true with the Jett 20. It offers about the same amount of growth as our other favorites bikes on this page. (The 24″ Jett is a bit different and does offer extended growth.)

Ultimate lightweight, efficient bike for young riders

Child standing over woom 4 20" kids bike on a bridge

  • MSRP : $599
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  22.1″ – 28″
  • WEIGHT:  17.9 lb.
  • GEARS : 8 speed
  • STANDOUT FEATURE : Wide gain ratio range, very lightweight, comfortable rider position
  • FULL REVIEW : woom 4

With mid-range 1.4″ tires, grip shifters, and weighing in under 18 lb., the woom 4 is well-suited for anything from longer rides on paved bike trails to cruising dirt roads.

Easy to ride and easy to handle, the woom 4 places kids in a comfortable rider position (not too leaned forward or too straight up) that helps kids feel stable and confident as they ride. The woom 4’s unique handlebar design allows the handlebars to be raised or lowered for a better fit as kids grow.

As the lightest 20 inch bike we’ve ever tested, our timid testers have all raved about the woom 4. For those riders ready for more action, the woom features a wide gain ratio (gearing) range of 2.3 to 5.9 making it suitable for flying down flat paved trails or climbing rolling hills.  Comes in several fun color options.

BEST 20 INCH BIKE FOR ADVENTUROUS RIDERS

What We Look for in a Multi-Use Bike

Multi-use bikes are ideal for adventurous and aggressive kids. They are versatile enough to ride around the neighborhood, take on longer paved rides, and tackle compact dirt trails and basic single-track trails.

Most kids on 20 inch bikes are just beginning to explore what adventures they can really have on a bike, so having a bike equipped to handle various conditions is ideal for confident, young riders.

Gears are preferred for a multi-use bike, as are lightweight frames, and high-quality, dual-hand brakes. Single speed bikes may be appropriate for children who would find shifting more confusing than helpful.

Polygon Ultralight MTB

Lightweight, 1x drivetrain, suspension fork

child riding the Polygon ultralight MTB

  • MSRP : $299
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 22″ – 27.5″
  • WEIGHT: 22.7 lb.
  • GEARS : 7-speed
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : 2.1″ wide knobby Kenda tires, 40mm Suntour suspension fork, cushioned saddle
  • FULL REVIEW : Polygon Ultralight

With the look of a true mountain bike, but without the expense, the Polygon Ultralight is the perfect bike for young riders with the desire to hit the dirt trails (or who just want to look like they’re going to 😜). Coming standard with a 40mm suspension fork, 7 speeds, wide and knobby tires, and powerful brakes, this Polygon certainly isn’t just for show and is plenty capable of conquering basic dirt trails.

Another standout feature of the Polygon is its light weight. Although 22.7 lb. isn’t as light as other bikes on this list (but still lighter than the REI), it is very light considering its lower price point as well as its suspension fork. Since young riders are lightweight themselves, it’s important to provide them a bike that is nimble enough to work with them, versus working against them due to heavy weight.

Compared to the Prevelo, the Polygon isn’t as fine-tuned. While Prevelo only has one more gear than the Polygon, it has a much wider gear range better suited for climbing hills or picking up speed on straightaways. The Prevelo also has a higher-end drivetrain with kid-specific Microshift components.

Prevelo Alpha Three

Confidence builder for developing trail riders

Child riding Prevelo Alpha Three 20 inch bike on a dirt trail

  • MSRP : $569
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  21″ – 26″
  • WEIGHT:  18.4 lb.
  • GEARS : 8-speed
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Lightweight and nimble, trigger shifters for aggressive riders
  • FULL REVIEW :  Prevelo Alpha Three

For those young groms craving a lightweight, nimble bike that can easily take them from grand neighborhood adventures to basic trails, the Prevelo Alpha Three is the ultimate ride.

Built to help develop the budding cyclist, the Prevelo comes equipped with kid-friendly Microshift trigger shifters, a narrow drivetrain to optimize pedal efficiency, a wide 8-speed gear range, as well as short-reach Tektro hand brakes.

When it’s time to hit the trails, the Alpha Three’s knobby Kenda Small Block 8 tires provide plenty of grip and traction. For those young shredders ready to take on more challenging terrain, the Alpha Three is able to run up to 2.1″ wide tires.

HONORABLE MENTION 20 INCH BIKES

We’ve tested dozens of 20″ bikes over the years, so not all of them can make our top favorites list. Here are a few more that you may want to consider.

Rugged rig for aggressive neighborhood riders

6 year old doing tricks in skate bowl on the Cleary Owl 20 inch kids bike

  • MSRP : $430
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  20.5″ – 26.1″
  • WEIGHT:  20.3 lb.
  • GEARS : Single speed and 3-speed options
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Semi-aggressive geometry for adventurous riders
  • FULL REVIEW :  Cleary Owl

Designed with a more leaned-forward body position and a low gain ratio, the Cleary Owl is a durable, fun-to-ride bike for those ambitious kids ready to tackle any jump or curb the neighborhood can throw at them, and who don’t want the extra hassle of shifting gears.

The Owl’s low gearing is especially ideal for kids who will regularly be tackling hills or ramps. But because the gearing is so low, we don’t recommend the Owl if lots of long, paved rides are in the future.

Well-equipped for basic trail riding as well, the Cleary allows kids to easily shift their weight around, but its single speed does limit its use to basic trails. The Owl’s steel frame helps to absorb some of the vibrations from the trail while also adding to the long-term durability of this rugged little pony.

We found the 3-speed Owl to be very difficult for little hands to engage the trigger shifters. As a result, we much prefer the single speed option.

Pello Rover

7 year old riding the pello rover 20 inch kids bike on gravel

  • MSRP : $559
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 22.5″ – 27.5″
  • WEIGHT: 20.3 lb.
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Mechanical disc brakes, wide tires with flat knobs suitable for both trail and pavement
  • FULL REVIEW :  Pello Rover

The Pello Rover is the ideal riding machine for young riders ready to tackle gears and trails (paved and dirt) for the first time.  Featuring wider, high-end Kenda Small Block 8 tires (20 x 1.95), the Pello has the extra grip to tackle rough terrain, while still allowing for smooth rolling on paved surfaces.

With superior stopping power from mechanical disc brakes, Rapidfire trigger shifters, and a lightweight build, the Rover stands ready to take on whatever your young ripper can throw at it.

Pello Reddi

Confidence inspiring design, high gain ratio for higher speeds

20 trek

  • MSRP : $449
  • SEAT HEIGHT:  21.25″ – 26″
  • WEIGHT:  17 lb.
  • GAIN RATIO : 4.11 (single speed)
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Comfortable, upright positioning, high gain ratio for higher speeds
  • FULL REVIEW :  Pello Reddi

Pello Bikes are the dream-child of a dad simply looking for a great bike at a great price.  He succeeded! The Pello Reddi is the perfect bike for everyday neighborhood riders looking for a steady ride with a comfortable upright position, and the simplicity of just a single gear.

With the highest gain ratio of the single-speed bikes, it takes slightly more effort than the others to get started, but can reach faster speeds and travel farther with each pedal stroke. This makes it a fantastic choice for longer rides with the family.

Decathlon Btwin Rockrider ST100 and Original 100

Best budget bikes for neighborhood riders – single speed

decathlon btwin rockrider 20 inch bike for kids

  • MSRP : $279 ( Rockrider ST100 – specs below for Rockrider)
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 23.25″ – 30.25″
  • WEIGHT: 24.3 lb.
  • SINGLE SPEED GAIN RATIO : 3.6
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Quality build for the price, exceptional brakes for a budget bike
  • FULL REVIEW: Btwin Rockrider ST100 20 inch , Btwin Original

Decathlon’s Btwin Rockrider ST100 and Original 100 bikes offer a high quality of build and overall performance with a budget-friendly price tag. From their smooth handling and responsive handbrakes ( that rarely need adjusting! ), to their lifetime warranty on the frames, Decathlon’s bikes are more like mid-range bikes masquerading as budget bikes.

The Rockrider bike models have a traditional mountain bike style frame and come complete with knobby air tires and dual-hand brakes with no coaster brake. The base ST100 model (shown above) is single-speed, while the higher-end ST500 and ST900 models are geared.

Raleigh Jazzi

Lightweight and great durability for its price

Raleigh Jazzi 20 in action

  • MSRP : $210
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 23″ – 29.5″
  • WEIGHT: 21.8 lb.
  • GAIN RATIO : 4
  • STANDOUT FEATURES : Decent build for a pretty great price
  • FULL REVIEW : Raleigh Jazzi 20

Impressively built to withstand multiple kids, yet still lightweight and affordable, Raleigh’s Jazzi 20 is an exceptional bike for neighborhood riders on a budget. With an upright position many young riders prefer, as well as a rear-hand brake for extra stopping power, the Jazzi was well-loved by our testers.

Compared to other bikes at their price point, the Jazzi is several pounds lighter, which makes it much easier for kids to balance and maneuver. The Jazzi does come with a coaster brake, but for kids who have already mastered pedaling on their 16″ bikes, the coaster brake shouldn’t be a problem.

Schwinn Koen/Elm

Best 18 Inch Bike Option

boy riding on a red schwinn koen 20 inch smartstart bike

  • MSRP : $199
  • SEAT HEIGHT: 24.5″ – 29″ (20″ wheel size)
  • WEIGHT: 27.8 lb.
  • GAIN RATIO :
  • FULL REVIEW : Schwinn Koen Boys Bike

If your budget is sending you in the direction of Walmart or Amazon, the Schwinn Koen and Elm are one of the decent bikes you’re going to get under $200. While their components are very basic and they are significantly heavier than other bikes on this list, they have better frame designs and overall geometry than most bikes you’ll find at a big-box store.

We tested the 20″ Koen and found it to be on the larger end for 20 inch bikes. The 18 inch Koen is sized more like the other 20 inch bikes we recommend. Depending on your child’s inseam, you may want to check out the slightly smaller 18 inch bike instead of the 20.

How to Choose the Best 20 inch Bike for your 6 or 7-Year-Old

Here’s a quick summary of what to look for when selecting the best bike for your 6 or 7-year-old. For more detailed information on the topics below, check out our article Best Kids Bikes: The Authoritative Buying Guide.

If you’re interested in bikes specifically for dirt trails and singletrack, our 9 Best 20 Inch Mountain Bikes article will be more helpful to you.

Size – Pay attention to seat height!

A 20 inch bike is generally the best fit to buy for 6 and 7-year-olds. If your child is already 8 or is a very tall 7-year-old, also consider 24-inch bikes as they would offer more room for growth. If a child starts on a 20 inch bike when they are 6 or 7, they can likely continue to ride it while they are 8 years old.

7 year old riding the rei rev co-op plus 20 inch kids bike on a trail

In addition to wheel size, pay close attention to the minimum and maximum seat height as they can vary widely between brands. All of the bikes shown above have 20 inch wheels, but fit different size kids.

For example, the Prevelo Alpha Three has a 21″ minimum seat height while the Raleigh Rowdy has a minimum seat height of 25.25″!  Make sure that you choose a bike that not only fits well now,  but allows for plenty of room for growth.

Don’t know how tall your child’s bike seat should be? If your child is a confident rider, it’s best to set the bike’s seat about 2 – 3″ above the child’s inseam. This will allow them to touch the ground with their tiptoes and achieve maximum efficiency while pedaling. If your child is very timid, you can set the seat lower to allow them to more easily touch the ground with their feet.

Weight – Lighter is better

Ideally, your child’s bike will be less than 30% of their body weight.  In most cases, the lighter the bike, the easier the bike is to ride. This is especially true with petite children.

Many 20 inch bikes also come with gears, which can increase the weight of the bike.  Vanity suspension forks on a 20 inch bike, however, can add A LOT of unnecessary weight to a bike.  Suspension on a 20 inch bike should be avoided unless the child is riding really aggressive single-track trails.

Frame Design – Upright vs. leaned in

The frame design on 20 inch bikes can vary greatly as these bikes are often designed for a specific type of rider.  A bike built for neighborhood use will place its rider in a more comfortable upright position. A bike built for more aggressive riding will place the rider in a more leaned forward position.

Aggressive vs. Neighborhood Bike

Side by side comparison of Prevelo Alpha Three and woom 4, comparing body position of rider. Prevelo is more leaned forward, while Woom is more upright

As a result, there isn’t  one  best bike for kids who are 6 or 7-years-old. There are bikes that are best for different types of riders and different types of terrains.

Brakes – Handbrakes are best

Generally, 6-year-olds are coordinated enough to properly use a handbrake.  Good quality handbrakes are much more efficient and have much more stopping power than coaster brakes. As a result, we give strong preference to bikes with dual hand brakes and NO coaster brake.  Coaster brakes aren’t necessary, and prevent kids from pedaling backward to help them regain their balance.

child hand pulling a brake on the raleigh rowdy kids bike

Gearing – Geared or single-speed?

A 20 inch bike is the first time you have an option to purchase a bike with gears. For some kids at age 6 or 7, gears might still be too much to handle. For less coordinated or timid kids, it’s just one more thing to worry about.  Many great 20 inch single-speed bikes are available that might be worth considering.

But for many kids, gears are a welcomed addition to their bike.  Some kids quickly and easily take to gears, while others take time. Learning when and how to shift can be confusing and challenging.

Often times age makes a difference in how a child responds to gears. 6-year-olds generally love playing with gears (i.e. shifting whenever they feel like it), but by 7 years old, their coordination has increased and they begin to use the gears more intentionally.

When choosing a single-speed, be sure to take note of the gain ratio of the bike.

Low gain ratio (2 to 3.5) : Easier to pedal from the start, but reaches a lower maximum speed.  Best for ambitious riders who want to power up hills or obstacles. Not ideal for use on long, flat rides.

High gain ratio (3.5 to 5): Harder to pedal from the start, but can reach a higher maximum speed.  Ideal for longer rides (or racing friends!) as the bike gains more distance with every pedal stroke.

Price – What does a more expensive bike get me?

Good bikes are not cheap, and as bikes get larger, they get more expensive. Every bike on this list is significantly better than a bike you’ll find at Walmart, but they also cost a lot more. Why? Building lightweight, quality bikes isn’t easy. There’s a reason why some adult bikes can cost more than cars!

The more expensive bikes on this list are more lightweight, have higher-end components, and frame designs that make them easier to ride. Adding gears also contributes significantly to the price. High-end bikes should be considered as investments as they typically have a very high resale value.

After having tested over 50 different 20 inch bikes, we can confidently say that in almost all cases, high-end bikes are easier for kids to ride than bikes found at big-box stores.

Girls 20 Inch Bikes vs. Boys 20 Inch Bikes

In the past, most kids bikes were either “boys bikes” or “girls bikes”. They had very different frame designs, in addition to unique colors and accents aimed to make a bike feminine or masculine.

In today’s evolved kids bike world, there’s rarely such a thing as a girls 20 inch bike or boys 20 inch bike. With frames and components that are identical for the genders, the only difference is color or design pattern. In fact, with the exception of the Raleigh MXR and Jazzi, none of our favorite 20 inch bikes are marketed specifically towards girls or boys.

Instead, our favorite brands simply offer a wide range of colors to appeal to all kids, regardless of gender. For parents looking for a more traditionally styled “girls bike”, we would recommend looking at Guardian’s pink, purple, and teal models. For a further breakdown of girls bikes, check out our 10 Best Girls Bikes article.

You also have the option of adding cute and girly bike accessories to any bike to make it more feminine. Get inspired on our 22 Fun Kids Bike Accessories page .

What About 18 Inch Bikes?

Most kid bike brands don’t make 18 inch bikes . Due to the proximity in sizes of their 16″ and 20″ bikes, there is no need for an 18″. As a result, we don’t have a best 18 inch bike list, but it is important to know where these bikes fall in size compared to 16″ and 20″ bikes.

Most 18 inch bikes are quite large and are sized like a 20 inch bike. The ByK and Joey are an exceptions as they are sized more like a 16-inch-bike. BUT the 18 inch bikes from all other brands (like RoyalBaby, Schwinn, and Joystar) are all sized like a 20 inch bike.

All in all, the vast majority of 18 inch bikes are heavy, mass-marketed bikes that are poorly designed. If you are shopping for an 18 inch kids bike, we highly recommend shopping for a 20 inch bike instead.

The Raleigh MXR are Jazzi 20 inch bikes are similar in size and cost to Schwinn and RoyalBaby 18 inch bikes, but are several pounds lighter.

Why trust us? The kids riding bikes in the pictures in this article are our kids (as well as some neighborhood kids).  We put bikes to the test – we don’t just rate them based on what others have said about them.  Plus, with 13 years of bike testing under our belt, we’ve personally met and consulted with many top brands in the industry including woom, Guardian, Strider, Prevelo, and Retrospec.

Launched back in 2019, the Trek Roscoe 6 is definitely showing signs of ageing. Yes, it’s had a fresh lick of paint and some specification updates since then, the biggest change being the addition of a dropper seat post. Other than that though, it’s essentially the same bike that now costs £1k rather than £675. But is it good enough to be added to our best hardtail mountain bikes guide? Trek Roscoe 6 need to know: Massive 2.8in Kenada tyres on smaller 27.5in rims boost confidence and control The Trek Roscoe 6 gets a 130mm dropper post as standard Shimano Deore 10sp drivetrain and 11-46t cassette The wider 141mm Boost quick release dropouts provide extra tyre clearance But it’s not the jump in price or the front derailleur mount that instantly date the Roscoe 6. It’s the 27.5in wheels shod with voluminous 2.8in tyres. Every other bike in this category has made the switch to 29in wheels with narrower tyres, so has Trek simply backed the wrong horse? Frame Before we answer that question, let’s take a closer look at the frame. Manufactured from Trek’s Alpha Gold aluminium the Roscoe comes in six unique sizes, XS though to XXL. Dig into the number though and again the Roscoe looks dated with an elevated BB height and relatively steep head angle. It’s a good thing then that the generous reach and short chainstays have stood the test of time. Yes, the seat angle is a little too laid back to provide an optimum position for seated climbing, but it does open up the top tube measurement so the bike feels roomy in every other situation. Suspension Fatter tyres need fatter forks to provide the necessary clearance, so the Roscoe 6 comes with a SR Suntour XCM 32. It’s coil sprung and listed as having 120mm travel, but grease marks on the chrome steel upper tubes indicated that we never managed to get more than 100mm travel out of it. No bad thing, as the firm spring rate helped prop up the front end and maintain better overall geometry for shredding. The Suntour fork also has no rebound damping adjustment, so limiting its movement with a firmer spring is a crude, but effective way to maintain control. On the plus side, we welcomed the additional stiffness and security of the 15mm bolt-thru axle. Components Like Specialized, Trek has its contact points dialled. The Bontrager Arvada saddle is firm but comfy and we can’t emphasise enough how good it is not having to stop and fiddle with a dodgy quick release seat collar every five minutes. Yes, the action of the 130mm TranzX post feels a little crude, and it also adds at least half a kilo to the overall weight of the bike, but it’s worth it. The balloon-like 2.8in Kenda Havok tyres, and especially the fatter inner tubes, increase the overall weight too, so combined with the wider 35mm rims the Roscoe 6 weights in a portly 15.57kg, making it the …Continue reading »

Tesla Cybertruck

Tesla cybertruck to get a 20% charge speed increase.

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Tesla Cybertruck is soon going to get a 20% increase in its fast-charging speed through an over-the-air software update.

When Tesla launches a new vehicle program, it often starts delivering it without having completely finished its development – especially on the software side of things.

For example, the Cybertruck still doesn’t have many Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features despite Tesla delivering all of them with Autopilot and FSD packages.

The automaker plans to deliver those later through over-the-air software updates.

When it comes to the powertrain, you wouldn’t think that software can do much, but there are often improvements to be made. Tesla often software limits its powertrain in new vehicles until it can build more confidence into the hardware and then unlocks more capability through software updates.

This appears to be the case with the Cybertruck’s charging capacity.

Early looks at the Cybertruck’s charge curve were disappointing . We previously reported on a session where the Cybertruck jumped to a peak charge rate of 255kW, but it quickly started to taper, with charge rate gradually decreasing starting at only 20% state-of-charge (SOC). By the time it reached 40% SOC, it was already down to 150kW, 100kW at 60% SOC, and reaches a plateau of 75-80kW at about 66% SOC, which it holds until around 90%.

Now, Tesla says that it is addressing that.

Drew Baglino, Tesla’s head of energy and powertrain engineering, said that the automaker is increasing the Cybertruck’s charge curve to 154 miles of range in just 15 minutes:

Cybertruck charge curve improvements are coming OTA later this quarter to unlock up to 154 miles recovered in 15 minutes.

Currently, Tesla estimates “up to 128 miles added in 15 minutes”. That’s a 20% increase in range added over the same timeframe.

Baglino says to expect the update later this quarter, which would mean by the end of June.

Electrek’s Take

I think it’s fair to say that Tesla cuts some corners to bring vehicles to market faster than legacy automakers. There are definitely some concerns with that, but it also opens the door to vehicles significantly improving quickly after the launch.

This is an example of that.

Many people felt like the Cybertruck’s bad charge curve was a bad look for Tesla’s new 4680 cells, but it looks like Tesla was being careful with the new hardware and now feels like it can get more out of it

‘Elope at the Eclipse’: Nearly 150 couples trek to Ohio get married during total solar eclipse

SENECA COUNTY, Ohio ( WOIO /Gray News) - You know that hit song by Bonnie Tyler from 1983, with the lyrics:

“Once upon a time there was light in my life, but now there’s only love in the dark. Nothing I can say, a total eclipse of the heart.”

Well, it happened in 2024.

On April 8, nearly 150 couples traveled to Seneca County, Ohio for “Elope at the Eclipse” to wed during the total solar eclipse.

Destination Seneca County hosted the free event at the East Green Amphitheater in Tiffin, near Toledo.

Bryce Riggs, executive director of Destination Seneca County, said the idea started last year and kept growing.

He said dozens of couples from all over the country registered and obtained marriage licenses, so county leaders decided to do a mass wedding ceremony.

The weddings were officiated by Judge Damon Alt of Seneca County Common Pleas Court.

Riggs said he created a ceremony that would last approximately four minutes during totality.

Couples from Georgia, Maryland, South Carolina, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio were registered to get married.

Riggs said some couples traveled more than 16,500 miles to Tiffin, Ohio, to begin their lives together in darkness.

Event leaders also hired a photographer to snap photos as well as provided live music for the first dance, champagne for the first toast and a personalized wedding cake.

Star trek: discovery’s tng connection explained - "the chase" & who are the progenitors.

The Progenitors were one of Captain Picard's most profound discoveries in Star Trek: The Next Generation, now Burnham resumes the chase in Discovery.

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episodes 1 & 2!

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 continues the story of the Progenitors discovered by Captain Picard 800 years ago.
  • Captain Burnham embarks on a treasure hunt to uncover the Progenitors' technology with potential for peace or conflict.
  • The legacy of the Progenitors in Star Trek: Discovery raises questions of power, unity, and morality in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is a surprising sequel to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Chase", continuing the story of the enigmatic Progenitors 800 years after they were discovered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). As Discovery is set 800 years after the TNG era, it can often feel forced when the show tries to marry up these two ends of the Star Trek timeline . However, the magnitude of Picard's discovery about the Progenitors justifies the secret being hidden for centuries, and it could have fascinating implications for the future of Star Trek 's 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" opens with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) exploring an 800-year-old Romulan scout ship at the behest of Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg). Kovich was less forthcoming than usual with information about the USS Discovery's "Red Directive" mission , forcing Burnham to seek help from Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) in learning more. Tilly uncovered recordings left by the Romulan scientist Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman), revealing Discovery 's links to Star Trek: The Next Generation 's original Progenitor treasure hunt, led by Captain Picard.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Picard’s original progenitor treasure hunt in tng explained.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase", Picard's former archeology teacher, Professor Galen (Norman Lloyd) asked the Enterprise captain to join him in solving a 4.5 billion-year-old mystery. Picard initially declined Galen's offer, but circumstances forced him to reconsider when his mentor's shuttle was attacked. Galen left behind files that contained huge blocks of numbers that were indecipherable without further information . Picard had the Enterprise retrace Galen's journey in the hope of finding out more about the archeology professor's strange code.

"The Chase" was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who returned to direct the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Eventually, Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) discovered that the numbers refer to DNA strands of multiple different alien species. The combined strands form a shape that resembles an algorithm, a program implanted in the DNA of multiple species, for reasons unknown . It quickly became clear that Picard was not the only person seeking answers about Galen's mystery, as the Cardassians and Klingons also sought to understand what this ancient program could be. Negotiating a truce between the two factions, Picard and Crusher gained enough information to lead the Enterprise, Cardassians, Klingons, and Romulans to the planet Vilmor II, where they make a monumental discovery.

TNG’s Progenitors Created All Humanoid Life In The Star Trek Universe

The treasure on Vilmor II was knowledge about life itself, delivered via a holographic message left behind by an ancient humanoid species. The sole humanoid species in the universe, these aliens wanted to leave a lasting legacy after their own extinction. And so, 4.5 billion years earlier, the ancient humanoids seeded their DNA across multiple planets in the Star Trek universe , influencing the evolution of countless species. Star Trek: Discovery reveals that since Picard revealed his findings, Starfleet have been calling the ancient humanoid species The Progenitors.

The Ancient Humanoid in Star Trek: The Next Generation was played by Salome Jens, who would go on to play the Female Changeling in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Not unlike the broken treasure map from Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons" , the Progenitors' message was broken into fragments and contained within multiple alien species' DNA. The Progenitors' intention was that, upon coming together to piece the fragments together, the disparate alien races would unite under their common origins. Sadly, this wasn't the case in Star Trek: The Next Generation , as the Klingons and Cardassians refused to believe that they could possibly originate from the same species . However, the Romulans were more thoughtful, setting up Discovery 's season 5 premiere.

Star Trek: Discovery's Huge Season 5 TNG Connection Explained By Showrunner

Discovery’s romulan scientist and his tng link explained.

At the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "The Chase", Captain Picard discusses the Progenitors' message with a surprisingly open-minded Romulan commander. The message has had an effect on the Romulan, who tells Picard that he hopes to one day stand alongside humanity as friends. Star Trek: Discovery reveals that one of the members of TNG 's Romulan landing party, Dr. Vellek, continued to research the Progenitors and eventually found where their ancient technology was hidden. However, Vellek was very aware that such technology could be as deadly as it is profound, and went to extraordinary lengths to hide his findings .

Both the crew of the USS Discovery and intergalactic outlaws Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) have access to Vellek's journals. However, both parties have very different intentions for the Romulan scientist's life's work. Captain Burnham hopes that recovering the Progenitors' technology will provide a sense of meaning, while Moll and L'ak are attracted by the price tag . Vellek remained hidden for 800 years, until his corpse was discovered in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which proves just how desperate he was to keep the location of the Progenitors' technology a secret.

What Does Star Trek: Discovery’s Progenitor Link Mean For Its Final Season?

In Star Trek: The Next Generation , the Progenitors had hoped the truth about humanoid life in the galaxy would bring a new era of peace and understanding . However, rather than become inspired by their commonality, the Klingons and Cardassians instead feud with each other, disgusted that they could be somehow genetically related. 800 years later, and in the wake of the hostilities caused by The Burn, the Progenitors' message could be the very thing that finally unites the galaxy in Star Trek: Discovery 's finale . However, it may not be that simple.

For one thing, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will continue the story of the 32nd century, and the Progenitors' message of commonality will dramatically reduce any sense of conflict in the universe. More interestingly, Dr. Kovich seems to want to get his hands on the technology, not the message. The Progenitors' technology would allow Starfleet to influence the evolution of other species , power that would set them up among the gods. This feels like too much power for a shifty character like Kovich to possess.

Whoever possesses the Progenitors' tech in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has the very building blocks of life itself. In the right hands, that could lead to profound discoveries that lead to renewed peace and prosperity for the Federation in the 32nd century. In the wrong hands, enemies of the Federation could use those building blocks for their own nefarious purposes. That's a huge concern as Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery continue their treasure hunt. Sooner or later, Captain Burnham will have to make a choice about how she deals with the legacy of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Progenitors.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

Kopecky is the first woman to win the Hell of the North in the World Champion’s jersey, Van der Poel dominates the peloton with a savage long-range attack.

How Paris-Roubaix Femmes unfolded

2024 paris-roubaix top 10, 2024 paris-roubaix femmes top 10.

Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Deceuninck crossed the line unchallenged following a 59-kilometer attack the day after Lotte Kopecky of SD Worx-Protime won Paris-Roubaix Femmes from a six-up sprint.

This is the second time Van der Poel claims victory in the prestigious Roubaix Velodrome on a day filled with intense action and drama. Second place was Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was third.

This is the third Spring Classics race won by Alpecin-Deceuninck this season. It was the fastest-ever edition of Paris-Roubaix with Van der Poel averaging 47.85 kilometers per hour for 260 km—1 kilometer per hour faster than his previous record, which was set last year.

“It is hard to believe. The team was stronger than last year. I’m super proud of the boys and happy to finish it off,” said Van der Poel in the post-race interview.

When asked if his 59-kilometer attack was planned, he said. “No, not really. I wanted to make the race hard from there on because I knew that was my strength, and I felt super good today. I knew it was a tailwind to the finish line for the most part. I had a really good day.”

“I never could have dreamt of this as a child. I was super motivated for this year. I wanted to show the jersey in a nice way. It goes beyond expectations. I’m a bit loss for words,” the World Champion added.

121st paris roubaix 2024

Saturday’s Paris-Roubaix Femmes was an entirely different race from the 2023 edition, with a lead group featuring multiple World Champions and six racers who all could handily win a race like Paris-Roubaix. But it was reigning World Champion Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) who played the race flawlessly from the early moments, including an on-bike handlebar adjustment to a picture-perfect sprint finish. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) finished second, and Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL) third.

“This was the goal of the season,” said Kopecky in the post-race interview. “The confidence the team has given me the whole season, but especially this week—they made me laugh as much as possible, and they made me feel like I could win this race.”

“It’s always nervous. You are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, so you’re never sure. One moment, I thought, ‘Now I’m boxed in,’ and I had to start the sprint pretty early, but I could keep sprinting,” the Belgian added.

Kopecky is the first woman to win Paris-Roubaix Femmes in the World Champion colors.

4th paris roubaix femmes 2024

How Paris-Roubaix unfolded

As the peloton rolled out from Compiègne, anticipation was heavy. Riders knew they would face a true test of grit and endurance across 29 punishing cobblestone sectors spanning nearly 260 kilometers. Among the favorites were Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), alongside stars like Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), and Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers).

Numerous attempts at breakaways were made throughout the early kilometers, but it wasn’t until Kasper Asgreen (Lidl-Trek) made his move that a serious threat to the peloton formed. Asgreen, along with a select group of ten riders, including Per Strand Hagenes (Visma-Lease a Bike), Marco Haller (Bora-hansgrohe), and Rasmus Tiller (Uno X-Mobility), managed to carve out a 1:30 gap, signaling the beginning of a strategic battle.

Behind them, the peloton, led by Alpecin-Deceuninck, remained vigilant, unwilling to let the breakaway gain too much ground as they entered the first cobblestone sector. The dynamic changed continuously as attacks and counterattacks peppered the race, with each rider jockeying for position on the unforgiving roads.

Van der Poel positioned himself strategically throughout the race. His Alpecin-Deceuninck team worked efficiently to control the pace and keep him in contention. Despite challenges like punctures and crashes that plagued some riders, Van der Poel remained focused on staying near the front of the race.

With still 150 kilometers left to go, just 60 riders were left on the front, six of them from Alpecin-Deceuninck. Crosswinds kicked in as the race entered its decisive phases, and Van der Poel led a chase group that gradually reeled in the leaders.

Ineos-Grenadiers rider disqualified

Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers) was disqualified from the race after taking an illegal tow from his team car following a puncture. Tarling was part of the select 30-rider front group, which formed after Alpecin-Deceuninck forced the pace for Van der Poel with 150km to go.

After an impressive performance from the young Brit at Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, his race ended early with 130km to go when he was officially disqualified by race commissaries and visibly disappointed.

60 kilometers to go

With 59 km to go, Van der Poel unleashed a savage attack on the Mons-en-Pévèle sector, leaving his rivals struggling to respond. Behind him, the chase group fractured, unable to match Van der Poel’s relentless pace. Riders like Pedersen and Pidcock fought bravely but couldn’t close the gap. Philipsen, meanwhile, was happy to sit in the group while his teammate Van der Poel stormed away from the group.

With his lead approaching almost a minute, Van der Poel’s victory seemed increasingly inevitable. As he navigated sector 10, his lead grew to over one minute and thirty seconds. His lead extended to 2 minutes and 46 seconds as he finished sector 9 unscathed. Despite attempts by the chase group to close the gap, Van der Poel’s lead remained substantial.

10 kilometers to go

With just 10 kilometers to go, Van der Poel’s lead continued at over 2 minutes. And despite the efforts of the chasers, including Pedersen, Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ), and Politt, Philipsen maintained a strong position for the podium.

Van der Poel navigated Carrefour de l’Arbre with ease, extending his lead to 2 minutes and 46 seconds. However, a crash for Laurence Pithien (Groupama-FDJ) interrupts the chase behind them as he loses control on a corner.

Philipsen makes a decisive attack on sector 3, putting pressure on the chasers. Despite no attacks from the chase group, Pithie and Vermeersch struggle to bridge the gap, trailing by almost 30 seconds.

With a lead holding steady at about 2 minutes and 50 seconds, Van der Poel’s advantage was remarkable, reminiscent of his Tour of Flanders win. As the race entered the final kilometers, Van der Poel faced only two more sectors, both relatively tame.

As the tension mounted in the chase group behind, it was evident that only two podium spots remained, leaving one rider disappointed. Van der Poel smoothly navigated Sector 2, inching closer to a worry-free finish.

Van der Poel’s dominance continued as he began to relax and celebrate, even sharing a fist bump with his team car. Meanwhile, Küng fell further behind after being distanced by Philipsen’s earlier attack.

At the velodrome

Once at the Roubaix Velodrome, Van der Poel crossed the finish line with exactly a three-minute margin—the biggest the race has seen in 22 years. This is also his sixth monument victory, putting him inside the top sixteen riders to ever do so, joining the likes of Tom Boonen, Fabian Cancellara, and Johan Museeuw. Van der Poel is the first rider since Cancellara in 2013 to win both the Tour of Flanders and Roubaix in the same season.

Behind him, the group of three, consisting of Philipsen, Pedersen, and Politt, entered the velodrome for the sprint. Küng trailed seconds behind. Following the ring of the bell, Politt attacked first, but Philipsen came around the German for a 1-2 win, and Pedersen finished in third place.

For Jasper Philipsen, this is another great result in an exceptional spring. He’s now won Milano-Sanremo and Brugge-De Panne and made the podium at Paris-Roubaix.

One-hundred thirty-nine riders took to the start in Denain on a warm, almost sunny day—definitely not your usual cobbled classic weather! The crosswinds were brutal, though, and riders spread across the cobbles, buffeted by 18 mph wind gusts.

Early in the race, there were some minor crashes, including Coryn Labecki (EF Education–Cannondale) and last year’s winner Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale). Still, there were no major catastrophes, and all the riders made it back onto their bikes, though Jackson required a bike change and was forced to chase. Small breaks attempted to ride away early, but the peloton quickly swallowed them up.

At 15 kilometers, Victoire Joncheray of Komugi-Grand Est launched a solo attack, growing her gap to an impressive 1:50. She held her solo lead for over 20 kilometers before getting caught by the peloton as Jackson caught up from behind.

At kilometer 66, the first cobbled section of the race, from Hornaing to Wandignies. The peloton entered the 3.7km stretch of cobbles together, jockeying for position. SD Worx-Protime’s Lotte Kopecky—one of the top contenders for the win—controlled the pace at the front. Team dsm-firmenich also wanted to control the race, with Rachele Barbieri attacking at the front. Visma-Lease-a-Bike’s Marianne Vos also moved towards the front, using her cyclocross skills to fly over the cobbles.

Live coverage thankfully began with 80 kilometers of racing to go. As riders hit the road between the cobbled sectors, the peloton swarmed and bunched, jockeying for position. The pace seemed higher than you would typically see with 80 kilometers to go, with key riders clearly trying to stay close to the front after the early crashes in the day.

Strategic moves and on-the-fly adjustments

As they hit the fourth cobbled section, Kopecky attacked, spreading the peloton out across the cobbles, stringing out riders behind her. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) stayed close as Vos accelerated to jump from the peloton into the newly formed lead group. While no serious breakaway had formed once the riders hit the pavement again, the peloton had certainly broken up quite a bit, with a group of 15 in the front and a large chase group close behind.

Jackson attacked out of the front group, with Lidl-Trek’s Ellen Van Dijk covering the move instantly. In the short sector 14 (Beuvry-la-Forêt to Orchies), the chase group worked to make that connection to the lead group as Van Dijk took control of the front of the race. A drone shot showed riders stretched across the entirety of the sector. Kopecky had a bike issue at 61 kilometers to go, asking the team car for an Allen key as she impressively tightened her handlebars on the fly .

Kopecky quickly raced her way back up to the lead group, moving towards the front just as the lead group hit Sector 13, the 1.7-kilometer Orchies segment, lead by Visma Lease-a-Bike’s Sophie Von Berswordt. Following the sector, the pace settled at the front as the peloton came back together.

At 53 kilometers to go, Kopecky made another attack on the cobbles, this time joined by her teammate Lorena Wiebes, who almost instantly began to struggle with a bike issue, Vos, Christina Schweinberger, and Pfeiffer Georgi. As Wiebes struggled with her bike, Vos attacked, bringing the lead group of four to a gap of 10 seconds.

Behind them, several riders, including FDJ Suez’s Grace Brown and two Human Powered Health riders, struggled with flats on the tricky cobbled section. The attack was reabsorbed into the dwindling peloton, forming a lead group of about 25 riders. Riders, including Kopecky and Van Dijk, tested small attacks, but they were quickly contained by the strong riders in the lead group.

FDJ-Suez’s Jade Wiel attacked out of Sector 8, building a slight advantage as Tiffany Cromwell of Canyon SRAM led the chasers. Wiel’s advantage grew to 10 seconds before Kopecky moved to the front, with Vos tight on her wheel. Van Dijk counterattacked, but FDJ-Suez moved into the lead group to cover moves as their rider moved up the road. Wiel’s advantage grew to over 20 seconds as Kopecky made a stop at the team car to pick up extra bottles. Wiel’s lead continued to extend, hitting 30 seconds with just under 28 kilometers and a few sectors of gravel of racing left.

20 kilometers to go

At the front of the chase group, Vos and Kopecky looked around, and Van Dijk attacked the group, aiming to shut down Wiel’s attack. But the FDJ riders hopped on her wheel, dropping the efficacy of Van Dijk’s attack. Wiel’s advantage dropped to 10 seconds, but then began to grow again. But in sector 6—Bourghelles to Wannehain—Wiel’s was reabsorbed into the lead group as Visma Lease-a-Bike and Van Dijk brought her back with FDJ’s Amber Kraak close behind. Van Dijk and Kraak both dropped into the time trial position, creating yet another small gap off the front.

Kraak and Van Dijk quickly extended their small gap as FDJ continued to play defense in the front of the race. As the gap grew to 15 seconds, the Visma Lease-a-Bike and SD Worx riders seemed unbothered by the two-woman attack, though the peloton’s pace accelerated as they hit the cobbles yet again.

Kopecky moved to the front and attacked with Balsamo, Georgi, and Vos on her wheel. The gap to the leaders quickly came down as Georgi fell off the pace and dropped back. Thanks to Kopecky’s massive surge, the gap to the rest of the peloton stretched aggressively in mere moments. The trio closed on Kraak and Van Dijk, putting two Lidl-Trek riders in the lead group with 18 kilometers to go.

Van Dijk let into Carrefour de l’Arbre, and the group of five maintained a strong lead on the peloton as Georgi tried to claw her way back, only eight seconds behind. Balsamo started to separate slightly from the lead group, struggling to hold the pace. Georgi made contact with Balsamo, passing her in her quest to connect to the leaders.

At the front, the riders struggled to pull together, as Van Dijk didn’t want to pull since Balsamo and Georgi were coming close to bridging up to the group. Balsamo and Georgi closed the gap, and immediately, Van Dijk attacked, with Vos staying tight to her wheel. The group of six stayed together as they hit 10 kilometers of racing to go, 40 seconds ahead of the chasers.

With eight kilometers to go, the group’s advantage shrunk to 25 seconds as the riders at the front struggled to work together cohesively. As the gap dropped to 20 seconds to a chase group of 10, including Wiebes and Borghesi, Kraak worked at the front, seemingly trying to press their advantage as Kopecky calmly sat on her wheel.

At five kilometers, the gap was just under 20 seconds as Kraak attacked, then Van Dijk with Kopecky and Vos on her wheel, Georgi and Balsamo staying tight behind. Behind them, the group of chasers tried to bridge up, but couldn’t seem to make any headway. The lead group’s 20-second gap was still in place at 2.5 kilometers to go, as the six racers started to focus on being prepared for the finish sprint while maintaining their gap. Van Dijk took a pull on the front with Vos right on her wheel, and they hit the final small cobble sector.

The final sprint

The group of six—nearly all World Champions—hit the velodrome together, preparing for the final sprint.

The bell rang for one lap to go. Georgi was the first to go, followed by Vos, but it was Kopecky coming from the back and around the other riders to take her first-ever Paris-Roubaix Femmes win. “This was the goal of the season,” said Kopecky in the post-race interview. “It’s always nervous. You are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, so you’re never sure. One moment, I thought, ‘Now I’m boxed in,’ and I had to start the sprint pretty early, but I could keep sprinting”
