Locking hubs, also known as free wheeling hubs, allow the front wheels of your four-wheel drive vehicle to rotate freely by disconnecting power from the front axle. Locking hubs are used to reduce the mechanical resistance on the front axles when four-wheel drive isn't engaged, improving performance, acceleration, and fuel efficiency. Locking hubs also help prevent wear and tear on the front axle that could be caused if it was driven constantly. If your vehicle had locking hubs from the factory and you aren't able to lock or unlock the hubs, they may need to be replaced. If the hubs won't unlock, you may notice your vehicle pulling with the front end and skipping or making noise when turning. This could also indicate a problem with the electrical or vacuum components that operate the hubs, so be sure to complete your diagnosis before replacing the locking hub assembly.
