Marriott Introducing Immersive 4D Travel Experience

BY Robert Workman

While the physical idea of a transporter hasn’t been created yet (sorry, Star Trek fans), Marriott is prepared to offer the next best thing, with an announcement that will virtually take their guests places.

Marriott Hotels has announced that it has partnered with Academy Award-winning Framestore to create a new virtual travel experience, powered in a fully immersive 4D format supplied by Oculus Rift headsets. (Oculus Rift is considered the leader in the forthcoming virtual reality race, as Facebook has invested $2 billion in the technology.)

With the new program, travelers can step into the virtual Teleporter, a space that resembles a phone booth, and slip on an Oculus Rift headset to experience another location, creating an experience similar to “being there” – even when they’re not.

Framestore, experienced in the field of video effects and creative content, teamed up with marketing agency Relevent to create the virtual reality experience, working in conjunction with the Oculus Rift tech. To do so, it needed to create a technique for recapturing 3D live-action video in a 360-degree format, and then mixing imagery with CGI and 4D elements, including heat, wind and mist, to complete said experience. Users interested in learning more can visit the official Travel Brilliantly page, or watch the video below.

“Marriott Hotels is pioneering the use of innovative technologies that will transform the guest experience to heights unseen in the current reality experience in unprecedented ways, “said Michael Dail, vice president, Marriott Hotels Brand Marketing. “Marriott seized on virtual reality and teleportation to give the next generation of travelers the clear cut notion that more amazing travel experiences are coming and to encourage them to co-create the future of travel with us on  TravelBrilliantly.com , where their best ideas enter Marriott’s innovation pipeline. Together, we are pushing the limits of what is possible.”

The Teleporter will tour eight different Marriott locations, ranging from New York to San Francisco, between September and November, before being rolled out as an official program.

What do you think Are you willing to give the Transporter a try You don’t even have to have Scotty beam you up!

Remember Rekall, the travel agency in Total Recall  that sedates Arnold Schwarzenegger and sends him on a psychic vacation to Mars? Marriott Hotels is now trying to deliver on that concept.

In September, the hotel chain unveiled the Teleporter,  a booth fully equipped with an Oculus Rift headset , fans, heat blowers, misting nozzles, and a scent dispenser, all to create a fully immersive virtual travel experience. According to Wired , visual effects firm Framestore (which pulled in the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year for Gravity ) developed the simulator over the summer.

The idea behind it is to inspire travel, not to replace it, so claims Marriott marketing vice president Michel Dail, who recently told the Verge , “People have such a love for travel, there’s really no replacing that cultural experience of being in the space, meeting the people, experiencing the food.” Freedom of movement within the simulation is severely limited, though Dail added, “The technology may improve to the point someday where it can totally surpass that real experience.”   The simulator booth is currently on an eight-city demo tour through New York, Boston, D.C., Atlanta, Dallas, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco.

For Marriott, the future of travel is a virtual-reality teleporter phone booth

Les Shu

What we just described is Marriott’s concept for virtual-reality (VR) travel, a 4D “sensory experience” that uses the Oculus Rift VR headset to transport someone to a destination, but without actually going there. Just launched at the Marquis, the Transporter will tour six other cities across the U.S. — with one stationed inside a Marriott property and another as a pop-up somewhere in the city — for both hotel guests and the general public.

For a brand that’s synonymous with lodging, you may be asking: What business does Marriott have playing with a nascent technology that most people associate with science fiction? For Marriott, it sees virtual reality playing a big role in how people travel in the future, and how it can be at that forefront – not just as a company that manages hotels, but also as a groundbreaker in the world of travel.

Future of travel

As one of the world’s largest hotel operators, Marriott has been testing new concepts in order to keep up with the modern travelers’ needs – from shifting furniture in and out of rooms, to placing charging stations around the hotel and mobile check-in.

“We’ve been leading the industry, looking for ways to innovate,” says Michael Dail, VP of brand marketing for Marriott. “One of the things that we’ve been doing as a brand is renovating the hotel experience.”

It’s creating interesting applications for our business, but it’s also exciting to be at the forefront with the content.

One of those ideas is virtual reality. The company knew about the Oculus Rift, and how it could be used for a travel-related VR experience.

“We talked about the idea of virtual reality being another metaphor for the ‘future of travel,’” Dail says. “How can we take what was existing and use content to start the conversation, and really engage people with the brand on a whole new level, because you don’t think of hotels as being part of VR.

“When you take it out of the gaming and entertainment application, you look at (VR) in a travel scenario, then you start to think, ‘I could really sample a destination … this gives you a much better way of experiencing it [than looking at static images on a hotel booking site],” Dail adds.

But because consumer VR has primarily been used for gaming and movies, the challenge was finding suitable content for hotel travel. If it truly wanted to create a VR experience, Marriott knew it would have to build something from the ground up.

So Marriott tapped Relevent for development help. Relevent, a marketing agency with experience creating special projects, worked with Marriott on how to create a unique VR travel experience using Oculus that explores what the future of travel could be, and, importantly, it needed to feel realistic. What came out of their brainstorms was the Teleporter, the aforementioned phone booth. The Teleporter, however, would go beyond virtual reality. It would combine 3D visual and audio elements with a physical experience – something referred to as 4D. It would require the construction of the booth and associating hardware, as well as creating custom accessories for filming the visuals.

The booth would have a user step into the booth (after signing a waiver, naturally), put on the headset and headphones, and “transported” into a virtual hotel lobby; within that lobby, the user is transported again – sci-fi style – to two locations, Hawaii and London, where they can experience what it’s like to be in those two different environments.

Before starting the project this past January, Relevent already had some insight: It worked with HBO to create a similar project for the show Game of Thrones , called “Ascent of Wall,” which generated much buzz at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. In conceptualizing Marriott’s Transporter, Ian Cleary, Relevent’s VP of Ideation and Innovation, says that even though the VR visuals are CGI, “throughout this whole project we want to make it feel as real as it can possibly be…to make the virtual travel experience feel like being there.”

Putting an amusement ride inside a closet

Just what is 4D? If you’ve been to an amusement park, you may have already experienced it. It’s a type of ride that combines a 3D film with physical experience, whether it’s the vibrations from a seat, air from a blower, or water being spritzed on you – all happening in-sync with the film.

Marriott’s VR experience (also referred to as #GetTeleported) is a similar idea, but more intimate and less rowdy than rides like Captain EO at Disneyland, or Spongebob Squarepants at Six Flags, yet far more complex to achieve.

“We’re taking an amusement park ride and cramming it into a closet – it’s an engineering challenge.”

Generally, “if you’re going to build out an experience that makes you feel like you’ve been to Hawaii or London, you would probably need a warehouse…you’d need to recreate a beach with sand, create a whole set with the skyline of London and the scale would take months and be something that’s in one place,” Cleary adds.

To record the visual elements for the Oculus, Relevent partnered with Framestore, a creative agency specializing in virtual reality that also worked on the Game of Thrones project. Framestore used several RED Dragon cameras (Framestore says they’re the best cameras you can buy for stereoscopic 3D) and special lenses on a customized ball-head rig to shoot the live video; the scenes are also scanned (using Lidar technology , to help measure depth and proximity of contents to one another), and then combined with photos to map the detailed CGI environment that the viewer sees.

But filming the scenes was incredibly difficult for several reasons. To achieve the 4D experience, the visuals had to be in sync with the other elements. The right audio had to come on at the right time, along with the industrial misters; the heating elements; the carpet fans that blow air up; a scent-making machine that pumps out smells; and the speaker that vibrates the “rumble deck” a user stands on, which also tilts forward during the London experience. As Cleary puts it, they were trying to MacGyver something into a Wonka Vision.

As the film crew went about its work, “we were having somebody stand right next to them and do what we call a sensory survey,” Cleary says. “Several people essentially recording everything that [the user would later feel], from slight vibrations under their feet, the wind in their hair, how warm the air is, the sun in their face, what angle the sun is at.

“We aggregate the inventory of sensations into the sensory survey of what the [Teleporter’s] feeling should be, and essentially designed and built the Teleporter and then all these mechanisms that deliver those sensations,” Cleary adds.

But the biggest task was capturing those visuals for the Oculus, and in a way, Marriott, Relevent, and Framestore are pioneers. The key was, it had to be realistic.

“It’s very difficult, because it’s not just the fact that there are very few precedence of it being done before, but also the fact that trying to simulate how your eyes and brain works, is far harder than we originally thought,” says Mike Woods, the head of Framestore’s digital practice. “There are so many things that we had to work out, to feel realistic, and not a lot of those things were technical; they were understanding how your head pivots on your shoulders, and how your eyes focus in, and how that changes as you move your head left and right – incredibly, technically difficult to pull off.”

Another issue is making sure the video doesn’t make people feel sick, Woods tells us. In our previous experience with the Oculus Rift, the major problem was the nausea that we developed from the experience. Woods agrees, and says that happens because of poor-quality video.

“It’s no different to 3D films in the cinema,” Woods says. “If you feel sick it’s because they’ve been made cheaply. This is the same. Cheap VR experiences will make you nauseous, it needs to be crafted to suit your eyes perfectly.

“We can’t have people walking with the feeling of sickness – that’s disastrous – so we have to make sure that it’s perfectly done,” Woods adds.

So, if it’s this difficult to put together, why not just focus on the VR aspect and forego the other 4D elements?

“Traveling is about sensation, it’s getting you out of your comfort zone and making you feel things you haven’t felt before,” Cleary says. “We went through elaborate lengths [because] when you travel, it not just the eyes or ears.”

If the whole setup sounds like a page out of a science-fiction movie, it’s because that’s where the Relevent team drew the Teleporter’s inspiration.

“We looked at literally every permutation of science-fiction – books, TV, movies, talking about any sort of travel over distance in sort of unnatural ways,” Cleary says. “In a way, what we’re doing here is trying to pioneer the future and that does sometimes looks a bit like science fiction.”

Contributing to the VR conversation

Nine months after the project began, all parties involved faced challenges, but also learned a lot from what we assume was an expensive project (all interview subjects declined to address cost).

“There isn’t a one-step solution for this,” Woods says. “Every environment you want to capture, to put someone in, you take it on a case-by-case basis and you work the best way to shooting that. Understanding what makes people feel nauseous and what doesn’t is another massive learning curve as well.”

Cheap VR experiences will make you nauseous, it needs to be crafted to suit your eyes perfectly.”

Cleary also points out that the beauty of the project is that it’s scalable for the future.

“This is something that we have the content for now, and we can fabricate as many of those things as we want,” Cleary says. “We can work with Framestore to shoot 100 more destinations. The ability to scale this is pretty spectacular, so then all of a sudden what we talk about is depth at scale, which in many ways is kind of the marketing dream.

For Marriott, it is the most complex experimental project it has embarked on, Dail says. “You have technology that exists, but hasn’t been brought together yet, so a lot of the applications are very custom.”

“For us, it’s really about creating interesting applications for our business, but it’s also exciting to be at the forefront with the content,” Dail says. “Because we’re having this conversation publicly – we’re engaging social media, we’ll be on a lot of blogs and sites – we definitely want to stay engaged with the community. We’re kind of this big entry into the community, so [our experience] would be definitely something we want to continue to share and refine.

“It’s going to be exciting to see, as you have the technology advance, as it becomes more mainstream, as the cost comes down … it becomes more accessible, how it can be scaled, will be real exciting to look at,” Dail adds.

Is there a real future for virtual travel?

As you watch participants try out the experience, you might think it looks a bit comical – that’s understandable and forgivable, as the Oculus and VR headsets in general are still a foreign idea for the masses. But it’s when you put it on, you experience what the Oculus can do outside of the gaming and entertainment world. As you physically turn your head, you can see an ultra-realistic 360-degree environment around you, moving fluidly as you pan with your eyes. You know it’s all CGI, so it does have a video game-like quality in some aspect. The vibrating deck you’re standing on simulates movement around the virtual hotel room, transporting you to the two destinations – the Hawaiian beach and at the top of a high-rise in central London. In the London scene, the deck actually tilts you forward to simulate looking from a balcony, and you can feel the wind and hear the city noise. (You’ll get a better sense of what we experienced when you watch the videos.)

( Above, this writer experiencing the Teleporter at the launch event in New York City. )

As Relevent’s Cleary describes it, it very much feels like a theme park ride. But Marriott’s Dail stresses that this is only the beginning, and it’s committed to virtual reality, whether it’s the Oculus or some other hardware.

“Over the next few weeks we’ll get a sense of what does the public think, is the public embracing the technology?” Dail says. “We’ll wrap up in November or December, so that’s a great time to regroup and think about taking it to other cities, or we can look at other destinations – maybe to a little more adventuresome than Hawaii and London.

What we’re doing here is trying to pioneer the future and that does sometimes looks a bit like science fiction.

For Marriott, travel is its business, and that doesn’t mean just offering a place to sleep. It sees virtual reality, on its own, contributing to other parts of its business, whether that’s event planning like a conference or wedding, or aspirational travel, even if there aren’t any 4D elements.

“Say you’re planning a wedding, or you’re having a big conference at a Marriott hotel, virtual reality can help you as a planner look at that and decide – try it out before you actually commit,” Dail says. “It’s designed to [make travel] attainable. Imagine the places you couldn’t go without a million dollars, a trip of a lifetime experience … to us that’s pretty exciting, taking it out of the realms of what is a hotel, and to us that’s pretty exciting.”

Of course, no matter how real the virtual reality looks now, it will never replace the real thing.

“People watch hundreds of hours of TV at home, but they still love to go to the movies,” Cleary says. “You still want to go to the movies, you still want to go to the amusement park because they give you that deeper thing. It’s not an everyday thing, but it’s something really special.”

The latest iteration of Fujifilm’s X100 camera started shipping on Wednesday.

The X100VI is -- as the name cleverly suggests -- the sixth in the series. Early reviews have been mostly positive as the camera builds on the successes of the already impressive earlier models going all the way back to the original X100, which launched in 2011.

Resizing an image is something we’re all going to have to do at some point in our digital lives. And whether you’re using Windows, macOS, or you’re rocking a Chromebook, there are ways to scale images up and down on each PC. Fortunately, these are all relatively simple methods too.

As part of its long-running Shot on iPhone series, Apple recently handed acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Miike (Audition, 13 Assassins, The Happiness of the Katakuris) an iPhone 15 Pro to shoot a short film.

4d vr experience: the future of virtual tours.

Real estate tours have come a long way over the years. The industry started with in-person tours and open houses among realtors, agents, and buyers.

This has changed tremendously with advances in technology. Today, real estate professionals and their clients often take advantage of the conveniences that 3D models and 3D virtual tours offer.

While impressive, it’s only the beginning. Slowly but surely, four-dimensional virtual reality or 4D VR experiences are adding new depth to these immersive encounters, using technology that we could only dream about a few decades earlier.

But what exactly is a 4D VR experience and what does it entail? More importantly, how can virtual tours benefit from it?

We answer these critical questions and more in this article.

What Is VR?

Virtual reality has taken the world by storm, especially in the world of gaming where it has allowed players to more fully immerse themselves in imaginative realms and worlds.

As the name suggests, it is a reality created in the virtual or digital world. It includes computer-generated environments that contain objects and scenes that appear to be real. They can be so life-like that the user feels as though they are physically present in these virtual surroundings and are experiencing them firsthand.

This is achieved through a virtual reality headset or helmet and has ample potential beyond video games. It is increasingly being used in other industries, including real estate.

How Does 4D VR Work?

A 4D VR experience transforms the physical world into a virtual one by seamlessly integrating the two to create an immersive experience. This fusion of physical sensations and virtual reality offers an elevated experience that even 3D virtual reality cannot match.

For example, vibrations from haptic feedback can offer the sensation of riding a motorcycle. 4D VR can also make you feel like you’re flying or swimming.

From a real estate point of view, it can make you feel like you’re standing on top of a skyscraper or on a balcony in a beachfront villa.

4D VR elevates the 3D VR experience. With the latter, you can view a property in 3D to understand how certain layouts will look with furniture once the design is complete. However, 4D VR doesn’t just allow you to see what it would be like to be in a space but also lets you feel like you’re physically present in it — be it an apartment building, a log cabin in the woods, or a beach house.

It makes virtual property viewing more engaging and immersive than it’s ever been by engaging your other senses.

4D VR vs 3D VR

3D VR is already impressively immersive but a 4D VR experience takes it a step further. Let’s review what we’ve learned to have a clearer idea of their differences:

  • 3D VR tours show a 360-degree render of a particular property while 4D virtual tours show how it feels to be there.
  • In a 3D tour, you can only see the property — it is a visual experience. But a 4D VR experience adds a sensory dynamic to 3D’s realistic visuals.

Though different, 3D and 4D technology are closely interrelated since 4D is built on the foundation of 3D virtual reality.

The Future of VR Tours: The 4D Metaverse

Clearly, the global virtual reality market is here to stay and growing exponentially. It’s predicted to be worth $296.9 billion by 2024 , nearly ten times its $30.7 billion worth in 2021.

In addition, it’s anticipated to enjoy a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% and will likely become an essential tool across industries, including education and real estate. In fact, property in the virtual world or metaverse has already started gaining value.

Even now, real estate agents can harness the power of 4D virtual reality to enhance the experiences of their clients. Prospects can get a more thorough understanding of the feel of a place. This can play a crucial role in convincing them to purchase or rent a particular property. But that’s not all.

The scope of 4D virtual reality is expected to surpass real estate marketing and will involve a more advanced universe: the metaverse.

What Is Metaverse Real Estate?

Metaverse real estate is similar to the real tangible/physical world in some ways.

Metaverse real estate refers to areas of land in the virtual world that are similar to the real world. However, instead of actual square feet, they’re made up of pixels.

Metaverse real estate is a programmable space that people can use to socialize, play games, sell NFTs or non-fungible tokens, attend concerts and meetings, and indulge in all kinds of activities.

With the growth of the metaverse, digital real estate is predicted to expand. In fact, the CAGR of the metaverse is projected to grow by 31.2% between 2022 and 2028 .

Investors are quickly becoming interested in metaverse real estate as it offers a platform or space that users can use to connect with each other.

This digitized land can be used however the owner chooses — to monetize their property’s content with access passes and NFT trading or to socialize and play games.

Virtual property also offers a way for brands to advertise themselves, organize virtual product launches, and offer customers a unique experience.

Virtual real estate in the metaverse is, therefore, a lucrative opportunity and can be flipped, developed, or leased similar to real-life properties.

However, metaverse real estate has yet to become a mainstream phenomenon so the focus remains on real-world properties. But to blend the two worlds together, 4D virtual tours offer the perfect solution. While the metaverse is only just picking up, 4D virtual tours are increasingly making their mark as an essential part of the real estate industry’s future.

Are 4D VR Experiences in Real Estate Future-proof?

4D VR tours aren’t going anywhere because tangible, physical property in the real world isn’t going anywhere. This means that its various applications in real estate remain relevant:

  • They allow architects and construction teams to communicate and supervise projects with ease and better success.
  • 4D VR enables customers to more fully immerse themselves in real estate listings. This means better and increased sales while leveraging all the benefits of a 3D virtual tour.
  • The technology lets clients enjoy visual and sensory experiences of the properties they’re viewing.

So, yes — since virtual tours have become such an important aspect of real estate, they are future-proof and will continue to gain ground.

While the metaverse may become a prominent aspect of real estate in the near future, there’s some way to go before it becomes generally accepted.

In the meantime, marketing tools for physical real estate properties like virtual reality tours will be increasingly prevalent. 3D tours and upgraded 4D VR experiences are, therefore, smart marketing investments that can help you stand out and reach larger audiences from anywhere in the world.

The Ultimate 4DX Movie Experience: An In-Depth Guide

Imagine feeling like you‘re flying alongside Iron Man, getting splashed by Aquaman‘s ocean antics, or dodging bullets with Jason Bourne – all from the edge of your theater seat. That heart-pumping action and immersion in blockbuster films is what the cutting-edge 4DX technology delivers. Keep reading as I break down everything you need to know about 4DX cinemas!

What is 4DX?

4DX takes movies off the screen and into an enveloping, multi-sensory environment through specialized motion seats, environmental effects, and theater designs that synchronously engage all your senses in the film experience.

Developed by South Korean company CJ 4DPLEX, 4DX incorporates on-screen visuals with in-theater effects like wind, scents, water, motion, snow, lightning, fog, vibration, air blasts, and more. This coordinates physical sensations with the action, enhancing immersion and excitement. It‘s the closest you can get to feeling like you‘re inside the film alongside characters!

4DX is the future of cinematic immersion that thrills audiences worldwide. But to fully appreciate its technological achievements, it helps to first understand the history and making of this breakthrough movie format.

The Evolution of 4DX Technology

The 4DX concept originated in 1999 with South Korean firm CJ Group wanting a new theater technology beyond 3D films. Their CJ 4DPLEX division spent 5 years developing the first 4DX theater. It premiered in 2009 in Seoul‘s CGV Cinema with the film Journey to the Center of the Earth.

This launched 4DX‘s rapid global growth. By 2011, there were 19 4DX theaters across South Korea, China, France, and Thailand. By 2014, the first US 4DX theater opened at Regal L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Expansion has since accelerating with over 760 4DX locations now spanning 69 countries worldwide!

Here are some key milestones in the development and adoption of 4DX technology globally:

  • 2009 – First 4DX theater opens in Seoul, South Korea
  • 2011 – 4DX expands to 19 theaters across 4 countries
  • 2014 – First USA 4DX theater debuts in Los Angeles
  • 2016 – 200+ global theaters and second US location in Chicago
  • 2018 – 500+ theaters worldwide across 60 countries
  • 2022 – Over 760 4DX theaters and nearly 38,000 seats globally

But this rapid growth relies on the proprietary technologies and innovations driving the 4DX experience.

Inside 4DX Theater Design and Technology

While visually resembling standard theaters, 4DX locations contain customized equipment specifically engineered by CJ 4DPLEX to stimulate your senses in sync with movies:

Motion Seats – The seats can tilt, swivel, shake, and slide along 6 axes of motion and vibration thanks to electric actuators. This simulates the movement of characters and action on-screen. For example, takeoffs rumble seats as if accelerating while aerial dogfights bank and tilt seats from side to side.

Wind Effects – Powerful fans embedded in the seats and walls blast you with breezes to match the action like feeling the wind in someone‘s hair or force of an explosion.

Water Sprays – Jets mounted above seats mist water to simulate rain, splashing, etc. Just like the actors, you‘ll feel the drops during storm scenes!

Scents – Small diffusers fill the auditorium with smells matching environments/events in the film like smoke, flowers, food, or burning rubber.

Lighting – Built-in LED strobes and spotlights accentuate on-screen visuals with matching flashes, illumination, and energizing lights.

Bubbles – Bubble machines float bubbles around the theater during underwater or dreamy scenes.

Snow – Flurry generators spray a light snow-like foam down on audiences to bring chilly scenes to life.

Air blasts – Focused air jets in seats mimic creatures scurrying by or other tactile effects.

Fog – Low-lying fog blankets viewing areas to recreate misty or hazy settings and enhance 3D.

This equipment is precisely coordinated by special coding in the film known as the 4DX Script. This instructs when to activate different combinations of effects throughout the movie to match the visuals and soundtrack. The result is complete immersion in the world of the film!

Inside A 4DX Auditorium

To properly showcase these effects, theaters must undergo customized construction and renovation by CJ 4DPLEX:

Walls and ceilings fitted with wind cannons, snow/fog machines, scent diffusers, spotlights, and control panels.

Installing platforms to rapidly tilt seats in smooth unison.

Ensuring adequate space between rows for seat motion range.

Upgrading sound systems for 360-degree audio with Dolby Atmos.

Added subwoofers under seats for deep vibrations during crashes, stomps, explosions.

Angling seats optimally towards screen and effects locations.

Building drainage systems to safely collect water spray.

Stronger foundations and framing to withstand greater vibrations.

Integrating computer systems to orchestrate effects in perfect sync.

Altogether these 4DX seat platforms, environmental controls, and auditorium layouts create a highly-choreographed arena where the action leaps off the screen.

The 4DX Experience

So what‘s it actually like to watch a Hollywood blockbuster in 4DX? Here are some of the signature experiences:

Feeling g-forces, acceleration, and momentum as your seat rapidly tilts and bucks during car chases, aerial dogfights, or superhero takeoffs.

Getting blasted by gale-force winds during explosions, helicopter blades, or speeding trains whooshing by.

Mist from water jets spraying your face as actors splash through sea waves or get caught in tropical storms.

Vibrations rumbling through your body with each slamming punch, crushing stomp, or earth-shattering crash.

Seats wildly jerking side to side as characters evade gunfire and debris comes flying at the screen.

Smelling fresh-baked cookies during a cozy bakery scene or getting a whiff of rocket exhaust as spaceships take off.

Feeling the warmth of flames or chill of an ice planet through coordinated seat heaters and fans.

Believable flickers of lightning and rumbles of thunder that electrify the room during raging storms.

Getting tickled on your neck and legs by creatures brushing past the actors.

Shivering as snowflakes fall gently down during a mountain hike or blizzard.

Rather than just hearing and seeing the action, you physically experience it along with characters thanks to the 4DX theater atmosphere enhancing each scene. It takes Hollywood‘s greatest blockbusters to the next level!

How 4DX Compares to IMAX

Many moviegoers wonder how 4DX differs from premium formats like IMAX 3D. While both offer enhanced viewing, here‘s a look at their key contrasts:

In summary:

IMAX delivers powerful visual and audio immersion through its giant screens and booming sound systems.

4DX relies more on physical effects like seat motion, scents, wind to immerse audiences.

IMAX 3D is ideal for those seeking a purely cinematic visual experience. But 4DX offers a more interactive, enveloping experience engaging all your senses.

Both appeal to different preferences for premium moviegoing!

Why Theater Owners Love 4DX

Theaters owners are rapidly embracing 4DX technology for its proven profit potential. Here‘s why exhibitors are investing in 4DX auditoriums:

Price premium – 4DX tickets cost $6-$8 more than regular 3D, up to a 50% markup. More revenue per screening.

Enhanced attendance – Novelty drives higher demand, with 4DX showings consistently selling out.

Refreshment uplift – Immersive 4DX experiences increase food/beverage purchases before and after shows.

Competitive differentiation – Offering 4DX draws customers away from competitors. A clear advantage.

Turn stale films into hits – Older catalog films find new life in 4DX due its novelty and fresh perspective.

Easy conversion – Existing auditoriums can be cost-effectively retrofitted into 4DX theaters.

With these benefits, it‘s easy to see why exhibitors worldwide are eager to upgrade screens to 4DX. It simply makes smart business sense!

Profiling 4DX‘s Most Popular Films

What types of movies play best in 4DX? Looking at the top-grossing 4DX films reveals audience preferences:

Action/Adventure – Fast-paced films like Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange allow seats to fully showcase motion capabilities with aerial dogfights, hand-to-hand combat, and magical action.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy – Effects-heavy franchises like Star Wars and Avatar come alive with spaceflight rumbling, alien creatures touching your seat, lightsaber vibrations, and planet environmentsfelt through wind, scents, and water.

Animation – Family films like Frozen II and Lightyear utilize 4DX for enhancing musical numbers, adding tactile comedy, and bringing cartoony action to life.

Horror – Providing startling jolts perfectly suits scary movies like The Black Phone or creepy sensations fit for Nope and Prey .

Comedy – Laughs get enhanced through well-timed chair bumps, neck tickles, and seat gags supplementing visual jokes and slapstick.

While all genres can benefit from 4DX in the right context, action-packed blockbusters generate the most thrilling ride. But the key is matching immersive effects to key story moments rather than just bombarding with random gimmicks. When done artfully, 4DX can make any film more engaging!

Expert Forecast on 4DX‘s Future

As an industry expert immersed in entertainment technology trends, here are my insider predictions for 4DX‘s growth and evolution:

Continued global expansion reaching over 1,000 theaters within 5 years. China, US, Japan, and Korea leading adoption.

Enhanced motion – More articulated seats with even finer control and range of motion as technology progresses.

Environmental effects 2.0 – Next-gen atmospheric effects like temperature, humidity, improved scents, and stronger tactile sensations.

Screenless theaters – 4DX expanding beyond movies into immersive environments for VR, gaming, and virtual travel.

Lower costs – Commercializing more affordable motion seats and effects systems for home use.

Competitive growth – New startups expanding the immersive theater space. But CJ 4DPLEX‘s rapid innovation and premium brand reputation keep them the leader.

Reshaped content – More films developed specifically for 4DX. Directors increasingly consider its storytelling capabilities during production.

While new challengers will emerge, 4DX represents the pinnacle of cinematic immersion today. And CJ 4DPLEX‘s relentless innovation and quality keeps them ahead of copycats. The future of movies is immersive and interactive!

Tips for Enjoying 4DX Movies

Based on my years of 4DX fandom and expertise, here are my top tips for the best experience:

Seating – Middle seats towards the back maximize immersion in the effects while minimizing chance of motion sickness in newbies.

Attire – Dress in cool, layered clothing you can peel off as action heats up. Avoid skirts or open shoes that could catch water and debris.

Timing – Rush to the theater early as popular shows sell out. Give yourself ample time afterwards as 4DX leaves you amped!

Food – Avoid messy snacks needing two hands to enjoy the motion. Rehydrate before and after the sensory overload.

Health – Check restrictions if pregnant, have neck/back issues, or get motion sick easily. Stay home if feeling unwell.

Age – Ensure kids are old enough to not be frightened by certain effects. Follow rules on height, age, and lap sitting.

Glasses – Secure your eyewear with a strap to keep them in place during all the shakes and loops.

Relax – Settle into the dynamics of your specific seat and go with the flow. Avoid rigidly bracing against motions.

Follow these tips and 4DX is guaranteed to take your moviegoing into an exhilarating new dimension!

The Bottom Line on 4DX Theaters

4DX represent the leading edge of cinema immersion technology today. With customized motion seats, lighting, environmental effects all precisely choreographed to movies, it surrounds audiences in the action unlike anything else. While unlikely to replace traditional theaters, these kinds of premium experiences help keep cinemas competitive.

I hope this insider guide gave you a deeper appreciation of 4DX‘s innovative tech and glimpse of its thrilling ride. So grab your popcorn, secure your glasses, and get ready for the multiplex adventure of a lifetime!

Operated by Bamba Travel

The beginning... bamba started operating with a hop-on hop-off bus service. After trial and error, bamba realised that travellers were very interested in not only being around other backpackers and meeting them, but they also wanted to have the opportunity to travel in local transportation, and have many more interactions with local people. For this reason, bamba decided to create a new way of travelling, called the Flexible Travel Pass. Travellers still have the same flexibility to stay as long as they want in each destination, and create their own itinerary; while at the same time travelling not only in shuttle vans with other backpackers, but also with a mix of local transportation such as Public Buses, Boats, Trains and sometimes flights. The idea behind this is to make sure travellers have the opportunity to travel in exactly the same way as if they were travelling on their own, but much easier and with the reassurance that they make the most out of their travel experience. Today, bamba has grown in size from Paul and Arturo’s original vision to include buses, experiences, guides and support staff in more than 80 countries worldwide! What bamba is today... bamba is the one stop solution for independent travellers in Latin America and around the world. bamba’s purpose is to make independent travel very easy. We help travellers by giving them the opportunity to create their own schedules, choose the route they want to follow and let them stay for as long as they want in each destination. bamba’s objective is to remove language barriers and the bureaucracy of developing countries by acting as an office where travellers can easily contact us, speak in English, make bus bookings, changes to their bus trips, get information on bus schedules, departure points, book day and multi-day trips easily and get information about each destination. We are like a living guidebook, and respond to the real time necessities of the clients. With our help, travellers will spend more time travelling, and less time arranging and figuring out their trip. We are expert world travellers, and we love what we do!

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

4d travel experience

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

Disneyland's Pixar Fest is here: A high-energy show for kids, relaxing for parents

4d travel experience

ANAHEIM, Calif. − M ad onna has got nothing on Edna Mode .

"The Incredible s " character slides side-to-side onstage, hitting Vogue-y poses that could rival the queen of pop herself. Watching with rapt attention are several small children, all of whom appear no more than 10-years-old. They jump up and down with her, hitting their own poses and sliding left to right.

At several points, non-character cast members give energetic dance instructions to the kids over music, telling them to flex, rock back and forth, clap, run, freeze, and more. The kid-friendly moves look like they could have come straight from an 80s workout video, but instead of Jane Fonda, the instructors are Edna Mode, Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, Frozone and other beloved characters from "Toy Story" and "Inside Out."

It's all part of "Pixar Pals Playtime Party" (try saying that three times fast) − a new show coming to Fantasyland Theatre at Southern California's Disneyland for Pixar Fest, which starts Friday and lasts through Aug. 4. USA TODAY caught a media preview of the show on Thursday, as well as a glimpse at the wide array of creative food offerings. Here's what to expect.

What's the Pixar Palace Playtime Party like?

Really tiring if you're a kid, but really relaxing if you're a parent. (Isn't that how theme parks ought to be?)

For about an hour, cast members get participants up on their feet and encourage them to dance, taking them through moves that include walking in an impromptu fashion show and forming a conga line. It's an energetic hour, but there's plenty of bleacher seating in the back for parents and kids who just want to sit, watch and catch their breath.

It's also a great opportunity to see some beloved Pixar characters up close. Woody, Jessie and Bo Peep from "Toy Story" join the non-costumed cast members onstage, as do Happiness and Sadness from "Inside Out." The characters also come down from the stage to dance with the kids on the floor, creating a more lively − and likely more memorable − experience of interacting with a character than waiting several minutes for a quick photo.

The show itself is pretty adorable and serves as more of an activity than a viewing. The kids at the preview event were constantly moving. At one point, a little girl dressed as Jessie jumped with glee at seeing the cowgirl herself onstage. Sadness from "Inside Out" also elicited plenty of laughs as Joy did her best to get her to move to the cheerful music.

For kids who aren't interested in dancing, there's also a "Luca"-themed area where they can color and chill out.

More: Disneyland revamps Mickey's Toontown to improve accessibility, relaxation: An inside look

What's the food like?

Decadent. Chances are, whatever you're in the mood for, they have for Pixar Fest − so long as that mood doesn't include anything healthy. (But aren't Disneyland days automatic cheat days anyway?)

On display for media were cookies and cupcakes galore, "Finding Nemo" cake pops, churros covered in gummy candy and chocolate sauce and mini-chocolate cakes decorated like tires from "Cars." And those sweets don't even scratch the surface.

For more savory options, there are also chicken and potato waffles in bite-sized pieces, pesto pasta, a pizza topped with burger patties, and even a "Ratatouille Pizzetta," a mini-pizza topped with eggplant, squash, zucchini, tomato sauce, and a wedge of French camembert cheese.

More: Here's an inside look at Disneyland's new Runaway Railway ride and Disney100 celebration

What else is at Pixar Fest?

So much. There's decor where you can pose for photos at the fronts of both Disneyland and California Adventure. There's "Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!," which is a California Adventure parade with the most Pixar characters of any parade in a Disney park. There's Club Pixar , which is an interactive DJ dance party that also features games like cornhole and tic-tac-toe. And there's "Together Forever − A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular," an evening projection show that includes beloved Pixar characters old and new, as well as new emotions from the upcoming "Inside Out 2" film.
