Amazing!!! There wasn’t anything that I didn’t like about this adventure. From the different zip lining, atv ridding and great restaurant to eat (and healthy snack station). EVERYTHING WAS EXCELLENT!!!! I recommend for anyone and everyone to do it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jennifer_R, Feb 2023

21. Xcaret

4.5⭐ 1,265 Reviews

Known as the greatest natural water park in Mexico, Xcaret is the most popular theme park in the Yucatan.

The recipient of numerous travel awards, it’s the ultimate playground for adults and children alike. The water park , theme park, amusement park, and eco-archaeological parks in one feature top-rated hotels, adult-only properties, underground rivers, boat excursions, shows, historical churches, a wine cellar, and a 19th-century Mexican mansion.

The grounds are also home to Children’s World with slides, hanging bridges, and tunnels, a Main Plaza with restaurants and shopping, and a Pre-Hispanic Village.

Beautiful Get the plus admission! The food at the buffet was amazing 🤩 would have never expected that. The park is wonderful and a must, when you are in Cancun. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Stefanie_K, Feb 2023

4.5⭐ 62 Reviews

This all-inclusive water park in Tulum is the conversion point of several underground rivers. In fact, the huge inlet is the center of the world’s largest network flow.

It’s home to numerous species of flora and fauna including mangrove forests, marine life, and other animals.

The grounds are even home to a nursery with more than 270 species of native and endangered plants.

In addition to its beautiful scenery and eco-friendly efforts, admission to Xel-Há includes unlimited food, beverages, and snorkeling.

There are also numerous bars on site to enjoy their refreshing adult beverages in between your snorkel and swimming sessions.

Great eco-park! Just watch utube vids- their own promotional ones- they deliver the goods! You don’t see the crowded eating/drinking areas, but the park itself is large enough that crowding want really a bother. Numerous included activities available, so don’t get there late. We showed up at noon and had to miss out on a few things. We thought getting there at 9am would make for to long a day, but we found time flew by and we were rushing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Angel_G, Jul 2018

Different areas of the park test your bodily senses including your balance, touch, sight, sound and smell.

These areas include the Path of Doing, the Path of Feeling, and Fantastic Scenarios.

Fun family time Very fun. The pueblo is a highlight, as is the waterslide and mud. Lots of laughs. Right experience for kids age 10 and 9. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Andrew_P, Dec 2022

Cancun Tours & Excursions : Final thoughts

Whether you are looking to relax on the beach, explore Mayan ruins, or swim with the largest fish on earth, Cancun has a tour for everyone.

However, it’s important to do your research to determine which companies and tour guides are reputable and provide the type of experience you might be seeking.

This will help prevent travel mishaps, missed opportunities, and potentially wasted money.

Try to plan ahead as much as possible (typically 2-4 weeks when it comes to booking tours and excursions).

Since Cancun is such a popular destination, know that tours and excursions may fill up quickly, especially during the week of Spring Break and the summer months.

Explore as much as you can in the time you are given (and within your budget!). One of the great things about Cancun is that there’s always something to see and do with many options to fit every budget.

You can sail the Caribbean on a private catamaran or hike through underground caverns one day, and enjoy dinner and a show the next.

The opportunities are endless!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Chichen Itza open despite COVID-19? Yes! From Monday to Sunday, from 8:00 AM to 04:00 PM. The last access to these sites will be allowed at 04:00 PM.
  • Can you climb Chichen Itza? It is not possible to climb any structures at Chichen Itza. In 2006 authorities closed its pyramid and it is prohibited to climb.
  • Do you need to book Chichen Itza tickets in advance? Chichen Itza is the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico and can be crowded. We recommend booking private tour for a worry-free experience, or make sure to arrive at the ticket counter before 08:00 AM in order to to avoid waiting in line. If you book with Kay Tours Mexico, you can cancel for free up to 24 hours before the start date of your tour and still receive a full refund. See all tour options to Chichen Itza.
  • What's the best way to see Chichen Itza? It is recommended to arrive early, when the archaeological site is about to open. The best and most comfortable way to do so is with a private tour.

Recient Reviews of Cancun Activities

Wouldn’t refund me because we had to cancel because of a sick person.

Great experience. Professional! Would definitely recommend.

Asked the tour guide about putting on pants brought with for ATV rode and was told not necessary. Should wear socks and pants even though tour guide says shorts and water shoes are fine. When told tour guide the ATV was burning leg was not taken seriously. Ended up with what are considered stage 1 level 2 burns (blistered and will leave scarring) the heat shield was not working properly. Had to seek medical attention for burns. Foot rests were also broken on ATV. With the exception of the issues wih ATV and injury had fun ziplining and swimming in cenote. Happy Tours called due to another reason and when told the Happy Tours caller about the burn and havig to seek medical attention got ignored.

I use Happy tours for all of my transportation needs .Now that they book excursions, even better. Had no issues booking tours on their website. Very simple and straightforward.

Happy tours was great for booking. No issues. Any questions all you have to do is call and they will help you no problems. Definitely use their service again.

First, have correct snorkel vests. Life jacket is not good for snorkeling. Everything was just to rushed. Crew was great. And also platinum is not worth the xtra money. Other tours did exactly what we did. Just a few less people.

Overall great experience; they showed up right on time to pick us from and to the airport.

Everything went perfect as planned. Minod delay at pickup time but overall very enjoyable and much much better thane expected after reading TripAdvisor bad reviews of many other different Tour companies. I would highly recommend HappyTou rs to anybody who wants to do a tour in Cancún area.

Wonders of the Maya

An excellent tour to appreciate and learn about the Mayan civilisation. Very happy to have done this. Miguel is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide with a good sense of humour. We felt very safe in the hands of our driver, Edgar. All of the hotels were decent and centrally located. We had a minor issue with the airport transfer to the hotel as we didn’t see anyone holding out a sign with our name. The assistance contact number provided by Destination Services was useless, no one answered when we called. Luckily we had the number of the guide, he helped us find the right guy in the busy Cancun airport!

Overall the tour was excellent. However the hotel in Merida was below average - very dark and dingy, noisy and below expectations. The tour guide Miguel and driver Augustine were very professional and did a great job for 3 days .

Cannot fault Bamba Experience. This was my first time solo travelling, and they made it so easy. There is a downloadable itinerary with a chat option if you come across any problems. I had a couple of queries along the way, which Bamba quickly sorted. The hostels were brilliant, and all very close to the bus stations, making it easy to get from one place to another. My only small gripe is that the one in Tulum had no AC. I am from Scotland, and found this very difficult! The included Chichen Itza trip was the highlight, and the tour guide Frank was fantastic. I thoroughly recommend this trip, and would be happy to book with Bamba again in the future.

The Mystical Mayan Trail: A Trip Through Mexico's Vibrant Culture and Natural Beauty

What people love about cancun tours.

This tour was AMAZING. Daniel, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about all the Mayan sites we visited. He also did ALL THE WORK of securing admission tickets so that we did not have to wait in any long lines. Along the way, he took us to some wonderful & always delicious restaurants for lunch. He also advised us on good places to eat dinner in each of our hotel stays. What's more, he advised in several places to eat at the hotel since walking into the urban areas
Thoroughly enjoyed this tour, it was just what I was looking for. Daniel was a lovely guide. Lots of travelling but very well organised and sufficient time at each place, considering the itinerary. Very nice hotel in Valladolid. Hotel in Merida was in a good location but was noisy (though I was fine and slept well as I wore ear plugs ?).
Great experience! A lot of cool activities and it is so great to not need to plan anything and stay with great people all the time.

13 BEST Private Tours in Cancun in 2024: A Local’s Guide

If you are heading to Cancun on vacation, you might be interested in booking a space on one of the best private tours in Cancun. Opting to participate in a tour takes a lot of the stress out of managing the logistics of your trip yourself.

It means that you have someone else to take care of figuring out how to get from A to B, to pick you up and drop you off from your hotel, and coordinate everything for you. Not to mention, exploring with a local guide means that you can get more insight and information about the local culture, cuisine, and history than you would ever have when exploring alone.

Private Cancun tours mean that the itinerary is completely tailored to you, your schedule, and your interests too. There is no trailing around after a tour group, and no unpleasant journeys on a hot, humid crowded bus.

Instead, you travel with your bilingual guide in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Depending on the specific tour, complimentary bottled water, snacks, and lunches are often also included.

The tours are not as expensive as you may think either. Prices are more economical in Mexico on the whole, and it often doesn’t work out much more expensive than trying to do it all independently.

This guide has been written by a British Travel Writer based in the Yucatan (Me!) I have gotten to know the Yucatan peninsula extremely well in the last couple of years of living here so rest assured, you are in good hands with my recommendations.

Table of Contents

13 of the Best Private Tours in Cancun in 2024

best tour companies cancun

Choosing the best private tours in Cancun is somewhat subjective and dependent on your interests. Are you looking to explore historical and archeological sites? Or do you want to relax on pristine white-sand beaches, surf, and go swimming with sea turtles?

13 varied options are detailed below. However, if you are overwhelmed, don’t know where to start, or only have the time to do one or two Cancun private tours during your Yucatan itinerary, the ones I would recommend are the early morning tour to Chichen Itza and Ik Kil cenote, the private tour to 4 cenotes, or the private tour of Izamal, Valladolid, Chocolate Museum and Tequila Factory.

Numerous reputable tour companies operate in Cancun and the wider Riviera Maya area. Viator and Get Your Guide are arguably two of the best choices.

Private tour to 4 cenotes

Cenotes are a highlight of visiting Southern Mexico for a lot of people and a must-have experience while you’re in the Yucatan. Cenotes are natural freshwater sinkholes that were formed when the Chicxulub meteor crashed into the earth some 65 million years ago.

(Yes, the same meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs and more than 90% of other life forms on Earth!) The meteor caused the earth’s surface to weaken and collapse.

The result was the creation of more than 7,000 sinkholes (cenotes) across the Yucatan peninsula. This private tour will take you to the stunning Ecoparque Cenotes Zapote nestled in the heart of the lush, tropical jungle.

Swim, snorkel, or cliff jump into the 63m deep Zapote Cenote. Then, hike to Las Palmas Cenote and zipline over the magnificent Abuelo Cheche (“Grandpa Cheche) cenote.

It can be tricky to get to some cenotes near Cancun if you are not renting a car in Mexico. This private tour to four cenotes includes transport and accommodates up to 6 people.

Your professional tour guides can help you take some memorable photos, and provide recommendations of places to eat and things to see and do when you arrive back in Cancun center.   Reserve your place plenty of time in advance of your trip!

Private tour to Chichen Itza, cenote, and Valladolid

As one of the “new” seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza needs no introduction. The archeological site is one of the most important Mayan cities in all of Mexico (and wider Latin America).

Chichen Itza dates back to the fifth century AD and was home to over 25,000 people during its heyday. The site is larger than many people realize.

The Temple of Kukulkan at its center is one of the most famous landmarks in Mexico. But you should also look out for the sacred cenote, where the Ancient Mayans would make human sacrifices to the gods, the Temple of the Warriors, and the Tzompantli – a platform where the Mayans would display the severed heads of their enemies to scare off other tribes.

After exploring the ruins with your guide and gaining a deeper understanding of its history and the Mayan civilization, cool off in a cenote before heading to Valladolid. The city of Valladolid is one of four Pueblo Magicos in the Yucatan state.

It was built in 1543 on top of the ruins of a Mayan city known as Zaci. Admire the San Servacio church, the Convento de San Bernardino de Sieno, and the local markets before heading back to Cancun.

This Chichen Itza private tour offers a wonderful experience for people of all ages. Book your place in advance , especially if you are traveling during the high season as this is one of the most popular excursions from the city of Cancun.

Private tour of Izamal, Valladolid, Chocolate Museum, and Tequila Factory

Izamal is one of the most charming pueblo magicos in Southern Mexico. And although a steady trickle of tourists has started to visit in recent years, it still remains largely under the radar.

Pueblo magicos are settlements that have been recognized by the Mexican tourism board for offering particularly interesting gastronomy, culture, history, and nature. Typically when somewhere has been designated as such, you can feel assured it is a worthwhile place to visit.

All of the houses, buildings, and churches in Izamal have been painted a uniform shade of bright yellow in honor of the Mayan Sun God Kinich. Izamal is a photographer’s dream!

A pyramid dedicated to this deity can be found in the center of town and is one of only a handful of pyramids in the Yucatan that were not destroyed by the Spanish colonizers. Head from Izamal to Valladolid via scenic jungle roads and check out the chocolate museum and tequila factory where you will learn the history of two of Mexico’s most famous exports. (With some free samples of course!)

Enjoy these cultural highlights of southern Mexico on this Cancun to Izamal, Valladolid, Chocolate Museum, and Tequila Factory tour.

Private tour from Cancun to Ek Balam including transport and entrance

Ek Balam is an impressive Ancient Mayan city located 171km west of Cancun, close to the city of Temozon. Its name means “dark jaguar” or “black jaguar” in Mayan.

The city was occupied for more than 1,000 years and especially thrived between 770 and 840AD during which time it was a major political hub in the region. It was later abandoned, like many Mayan settlements, and reclaimed by the jungle.

Ek Balam wasn’t rediscovered until as recently as the 1980s! Its most notable structure is “El Torre”, a spectacular 95-foot pyramid that offers incredible views over the jungle canopy from its peak.

On a clear day, you can see out to Chichen Itza and Coba from up here! This is a very popular day trip to do from Cancun.

Private visit to Tulum and Sac Actun

The pueblo magico and Riviera Maya beach town of Tulum has quickly grown to become one of the most popular travel destinations in Mexico in recent years. But while the crowds can be a turn-off for some, some places are popular for a reason.

The area is famous for its exclusive beach clubs, its beaches boasting soft, powdery white sand and the Tulum ruins – the only ancient Mayan city to be founded by the coast. This private tour includes pick up from your hotel in Tulum and transport and entrance fees to the Tulum archeological site.

Learn about the ancient Mayan city that flourished here between the 13th and 16th centuries and check out the sunbleached remnants of some of the impressive buildings that still stand here today.

Among the various well-preserved structures, some that stand out are the Castillo (castle), the Temple of the Wind, and the Temple of the Frescoes – a spiritual building whose walls were decorated with vibrant, colorful paintings of Mayan gods performing various rituals.

After you’re done exploring the ruins, enjoy a traditional lunch, hang out on the beach and enjoy ice-cold cervezas packed in a cooler by your guide, and head out to the cenote of Sac Actun.

This Cancun private tour takes you to two of the most important  Mayan archaeological sites in the Yucatán peninsula – Tulum and Coba. Tulum is the magnificent coastal city that flourished from the 13th century and the only ruin to be found overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Coba was once one of the most influential cities in the Mayan world. It was founded around the 1st century AD and thrived between the 7th and 10th centuries.

An impressive stone pyramid here called “Nohoch Mul” is one of the tallest in the Yucatan. Final thoughts on the best private tours in Cancun

Best private tours from Cancun: journey to Ek Balam

It can be overwhelming to try and decide which private tour options in Cancun are the best to do, and how to find the right balance of relaxing vs sightseeing on your trip. But all of them will no doubt enrich your experience and you are not likely to regret booking any of them!

The other great thing is that a lot of operators offer free cancellation up to as late as 24 hours before the tour is due to depart. So, you can lock in your space and if you change your mind, there is no charge or commitment.

It is a good idea to reserve your spot online in advance, especially if you are travelling during the peak season which runs between December and March in Southern Mexico.

This is an early morning excursion to Chichen Itza, which is an ancient Mayan site.

The tour organized by Amigo Tours will last for 12 hours and you will be taken around the site and briefed of its history and culture.

Included in the tour is also a lunch buffet before and after which (preferably before, so you can work up an appetite) you can take a dip in the cenotes, a natural sinkhole formation that the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is famous for.

Children younger than three years of age can join the tour for free though the ticket price for adults and children aged between 3 and 12 are different.

You can also book yourself tours to Chichen Itza at sunrise and can also make a trip to Tulum and Isla Mujeres with the same company.

  • The ride can be uncomfortable, especially for children

If you’re in for a thrilling yet relaxing adventure, you’ll want to consider joining this tour.

Aside from the scenic jungle, you can take a refreshing dip in a secluded cenote filled with pristine waters and greenery.

The cenote is so private that you’ll feel like you have the spot for yourselves.

Driving a two-seater buggy, you’ll pass through terrains, paths, and hills as you enjoy jungle and wildlife views.

The guides are also entertaining, knowledgeable, and experienced.

The tour is also more interactive since it’s done in small groups.

It’s recommended to bring a hat since dust can get into your hair while riding the buggy.

4. EcoColors Tours – Swim with Whale Shark Tour (from $167)

For a memorable experience of swimming with whale sharks, EcoColors Tours – Swim with Whale Shark Tour is an excellent alternative to Amigo Tours – Chichen Itza Plus and Jungle Tour Cancún Adventure.

Whale sharks are often called gentle giants of the ocean and truly remarkable creatures.

If you have seen photographs of these mammals, you know what I am talking about — magnificent, aren’t they?

Now, imagine being able to swim alongside these wonders of nature.

In Cancun, you can!

These tours are typically offered between May and mid-September and you can book them well in advance.

The tours will also last for 7 hours which will include breakfast and lunch.

I would highly recommend carrying some medicine to prevent motion sickness if you are prone to that.

You may also want to inquire about rash guards as the operators are likely to discourage you from wearing sunscreen in the water in order to protect the reefs and local marine life.

You will arrive at the dock by 7:30 am after being picked up from the hotel.

This is truly an experience of a lifetime!

The Rio Secreto Underground River Tour allows you to experience the nature reserve near Cancun.

The crystal caves of the Yucatan Peninsula are some of the most breathtaking sights in the part of the hemisphere and are truly a sight to behold.

Through this trip, you will be able to explore all these natural wonders.

If you pick the right package, you will also get a pickup and drop back to your hotel.

This is a full day’s excursion but is actually a very peaceful way to spend the day given that you will be exploring and swimming in underground caves the whole time.

You may work up an appetite from all that swimming so I would suggest you confirm about meals being provided by the tour operators or pack some snacks of your own.

13. Priority Access: Xplor Adventure Park from Cancun (from $134)

Priority Access Xplor Adventure Park From Cancun

Carretera Chetumal, Puerto Juarez Km 282 77710 Playa del Carmen, Q.R (998) 883-3143 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

This priority access to Xplor Adventure Park is one of the most exciting ways to experience this park.

Xplor in the evening and after dark is when the forest is the most alive.

The Yucatanean jungle opens its arms to tourists who want to experience the wildlife in the darkness and observe (quietly and respectfully), animals in their natural habitat.

This is a 7-hour tour that takes you through the forest.

You can swim in the underground river systems, zipline through the tropical forest and enjoy the night sky in complete silence but for the sounds of the jungle.

The tour includes an all-you-can-eat buffet (though I would suggest you take it easy because you will have a long night of action ahead of you).

If we had to pick the best, it would be the Amigo Tours – Chichen Itza Plus, with exciting history and sights.

My eyes widened as the vastness of the pyramid unfolded before me, and my little ones’ faces were glowing with awe and curiosity.

At that moment, we were not just tourists but time travelers, transported to an era where ancient civilizations thrived.

We learned a lot and felt safe while navigating narrow trails.

It’s best to do the tour early to avoid crowds and heat.

  • Punam R 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommend this 5 star airport transfer with Igor! I would highly recommend STP Caribe for a very comfortable and safe private airport transfer. You should ask for Igor! It was a pleasure having him take me to my hotel and share a lot of great information and views on the way. Communication was fantastic before and during and the hospitality and service just wonderful!! I really appreciated the cold towel and beverages at the airport. Great way to kick off my vacation! The 10 Best Cancún Tours

Chichen itza discovery experience.

Chichen Itza is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and ranks among Mexico's star attractions. This Mayan city features on many Cancún tours and is a great place to travel back in time. Hidden deep in the jungle, Chichen Itza will make you feel like a pioneer of old.

The main draw is the iconic pyramid, El Castillo. At 30 meters tall, this temple has kept watch over the city for centuries. It dominates the complex and will be the main focus of your photographs.

During your visit to Chichen Itza, you'll also see the Temple of the Warriors, the Observatory and one of the world's first ball courts. As you wander around the atmospheric ruins, your guide will let you into secrets of the past with tales about those who once lived here.

Many Cancún tours to Chichen Itza also swing by the historical town of Valladolid for a bit of contrast. The colonial architecture will blow you away while the nearby cenotes are perfect for a refreshing swim.

Isla Mujeres Excursion from Cancún

For a slice of island life, take a trip to Isla Mujeres, which is a short ferry ride from Cancún. This tropical paradise is all about sandy beaches and turquoise water – relaxation is the name of the game here.

Most people come to Isla Mujeres for some beach time, and there are plenty of places with sun loungers and bars to enjoy. Some of the best snorkeling tours in Cancún are based on the island too. You can swim over the world's second-largest coral reef system which is home to exotic fish, turtles and even manatees.

Other popular haunts include the Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, which offers up everything from scenic views to crocodiles. You can also explore the Underwater Museum and the Dolphin Discovery Center, or cycle around the island on a bike excursion .

For a luxurious experience, book one of the private Cancún tours  that sail around the island by catamaran. You'll stop at secluded beaches and spend as long as you want in each location.

Cenote Swim at the Yucatán Peninsula

If the Yucatán Peninsula is known for one thing, it's the mysterious cenotes that punctuate the jungle. The Mayans believed that these pools were gateways to the underworld. Pilgrimages and human sacrifices were associated with the cenotes, which have long been seen as sacred places.

Today, these natural sinkholes have a more modern function – as a swimming spot for visitors. There are thousands of cenotes in Yucatán, occurring where limestone bedrock has collapsed to reveal the water below.

Located near Chichen Itza , the Ik-Kil Cenote is one of the most visited in the region. Turquoise water fills this giant subterranean cavern, and light cascades down from the hole in the roof to create an ethereal underworld. Viewing platforms make for great photo vantage points and the cool waters are idyllic on a hot day.

Other popular cenotes visited on Cancún tours include Cenote Azul, which has a cliff jump, and Cenote Las Mojarras, which has a zip line. Many cenotes also have shallower areas for families to safely enjoy.

Tulum Day Trip from Cancún

Alongside Cancún, Tulum is another favorite destination on the Yucatán Peninsula. Famed for its ocean-facing archaeological site, Tulum boasts some of Mexico's best coastal views. You can take a day trip to Tulum from Cancún to discover the place for yourself.

The Mayan ruins at Tulum perch on the cliffs above the Caribbean Sea. The setting is as magnificent as the complex itself, with enough photo backdrops to keep you busy for hours. You'll see the El Castillo watchtower as well as the Temple of the Frescoes as you wander around this ancient port city.

After your guided tour, head down to the white sand beach below the ruins and enjoy a bit of downtime. You can relax on the shore or take to the sea for swimming and snorkeling. Remember to pack sunscreen and a towel.

Some day trips to Tulum also include a stop for cenote swimming in the jungle surrounding the archaeological site. Cenote Mariposa is a popular choice for a dip in an otherworldly cave.

Cancún Scuba Diving Experience

Scuba diving in Cancún is a joy for all ability levels, with courses for beginners and deeper dives for experts. The clear waters and vibrant marine ecosystems make Cancún one of the world's top diving locations.

If it's your first time, there are day-long lessons that teach you the basics. You'll begin in the pool to gain confidence, before moving to the sea for some shallow water dives. Certification courses are also available, for those who want to further develop their skills.

Experienced divers can enjoy night dives, cenote dives and wreck dives. If you're fully qualified, you can explore the C-58 and C-55 minesweepers, which are among the deepest dives in Mexico. There are also multi-day trips from Cancún by boat to some of the region's top diving sites.

One of the more usual Cancún tours for divers takes in the Underwater Museum . This unique installation is home to 500 sculptures, which are easily visible in the clear water. You don't need certification to be able to dive here.

Cancún's Theme Park Adventure

If you're looking for rip-roaring family fun, then you're in luck. Cancún has a staggering range of theme parks to explore, all of which are nature-based to make the most of the gorgeous Mexican scenery. Swimming, zip lines and ATV tours are all on the cards.

For full-on jungle immersion, head to Xcaret where cenotes and beaches await. This ecotourism project on the Riviera Maya has over 50 attractions, including an aquarium, butterfly garden and entertainment shows. Meanwhile, at the natural water park of Xel-Ha , snorkeling and waterslides are the business.

Up the action with a trip to Extreme Adventure Park or Xplor Adventure Park . At these popular spots, you can go zip lining in the jungle canopy and raft along underground rivers. If you're looking for adrenaline-inducing activities, these are the parks to visit.

Cancún quad tours are another way to explore the forests of the Yucatán Peninsula. You'll zoom along jungle tracks, far from the crowds, stopping at cenotes to wash off all the mud!

Las Coloradas Pink Lakes Day Tour

Located up on the northern Yucatán coast, Las Coloradas is another popular destination on Cancún tours. This humble fishing village has become famous thanks to its mesmerizing pink lakes. It's a coveted spot for Instagrammers and nature lovers looking to see something a bit different.

The pink color of the lakes comes from the large amounts of algae and salt in the water. During a guided tour you'll learn about the unique ecology of the lakes and the history of the surrounding region.

You can explore the village and walk along the salt flats, taking as many photos as you like. Discover how the salt mining industry has influenced the area and find out about the traditional harvesting methods still used today.

After you've had your fill of the pink lakes, you can continue your adventure at Rio Lagartos. Here, boat tours through the biosphere reserve are on offer, taking you deeper into this wild landscape. Keep your eyes peeled for flamingos and turtles – crocodiles are sometimes spotted too.

Whale Shark Swimming Adventure

Is swimming with whale sharks at the top of your bucket list? There are several places around the world where this is possible, but Cancún is one of the most reliable when it comes to sightings.

These Cancún tours take place in the warm Caribbean waters where the whale sharks come to feed. The best time to go is between May and September as the whales are migratory and don't stay around all year.

You'll head out to sea by boat, cruising along until you reach the open water where the whales hang out. Once the gentle marine giants have been spotted, you'll jump overboard and swim alongside them. There are usually multiple swimming opportunities on each trip, with the boat staying out for a couple of hours.

For the ultimate whale shark experience, book a private tour with exclusive pickups and boat transfers. Your biologist guide will teach you about the local marine life before joining you in the water. It'll be just you and the whales.

Speedboat Tour in the Nichupte Lagoon

Nichupte Lagoon attracts visitors from near and far to experience its blue waters, stunning scenery and thriving marine life. It's a popular stop on many Cancún tours and feels a world away from the bustle of the city. The lagoon is easy to reach as it sits between Cancún's "Hotel Zone" and the mainland.

On a guided tour around Nichupte Lagoon, you'll enjoy a range of adventurous activities suitable for all the family. Go snorkeling or scuba diving to discover colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. Alternatively, rent a kayak or a glass bottom boat and paddle through the mangroves in search of adventure.

During a boat tour on the lagoon, you'll be perfectly positioned to spot wildlife – birdwatching is particularly rewarding here. For added romance, head out for a sunset or dinner cruise for dreamy views and drinks.

Meanwhile, those looking for faster thrills can take a speedboat excursion to explore the secret coves and inlets of the lagoon. Hang on tight – you'll be reaching speeds of up to 35 knots!

Horse Riding in Cancún Experience

Take to the saddle and channel your inner cowboy as you explore Cancún on horseback. You'll be riding along the rainforest trails, getting back to nature in the Yucatán jungles. No experience is necessary as instruction will be given – you'll be matched with a mount based on your ability.

Most horse riding excursions take place along the Ruta de los Cenotes, which is one of the prettiest parts of the Mayan jungle. This hidden world is on the city's doorstep yet feels a million miles from civilization.

As you delve deeper into the forests, learn about the diverse flora and fauna from your guide. The lush jungle is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including spider monkeys and coatis.

Many horse riding tours in Cancún also take in other adventurous activities for a fun-packed day out. Stopping for a cool dip in one of the famous cenotes is particularly welcome after a hot ride. You can opt to include zip line experiences and ATV trips in your itinerary too.

Planning your visit to cancún, about cancún.

Cancún is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico. Around 10 million tourists come here every year. The wide range of attractions and excellent infrastructure makes Cancún a great place for everyone from families to solo travelers.

Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, this resort on the Yucatán Peninsula is famous for its hotels, nightlife and beaches. If you're looking for water sports, sunbathing and clubbing into the early hours, then Cancún is sure to float your boat.

Visitors traveling from abroad will be pleased to know that Cancún is super easy to reach from the United States and Europe. There are several direct flights to Cancún from numerous destinations across the world, and the city is well connected to Mexico City too. Many people like to combine a trip to Cancún with other destinations in Mexico, like Oaxaca, Palenque or Merida.

The weather in Cancún is best between December and March, yet this means it's also the busiest time to visit. To avoid the crowds and still enjoy the warmth, come in the shoulder months of April, May and November. The rains fall from May to October, bringing with them some great hotel deals if you're traveling on a budget.

Good to know before arriving

You'll find many of the all-inclusive hotels dotted along Boulevard Kukulkan, on the famous 24-kilometer-long sandbar. This is known as the "Hotel Zone" and is the place to stay if you want the beach on your doorstep. For a taste of local life away from the resorts, base yourself in "El Centro", which is the city's downtown.

Everything in Cancún is fairly spread out, so the best way to get around is by bus. There's an extensive network that links the beach resorts with downtown, so it's easy to reach all the main tourist spots. Travel by bus is inexpensive which means you'll have more to spend on excursions.

Taxis are also available to drive you around the "Hotel Zone" while private shuttle transportation can take you further afield. Private Cancún airport transfers are the ultimate way to arrive at your hotel after a long flight. Meanwhile, Cancún hop-on hop-off bus tours allow you to see the area with minimal hassle.

Cash is king in Cancún as not all restaurants and stores accept cards. You can exchange your money at the airport kiosks and many resorts offer this service too.

Places and experiences that cannot be missed

Cancún has some of the best beaches in Mexico, and even the Caribbean! So, you should spend at least some of your vacation at the coast – hotspots include Las Perlas, Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas. Inland, cenote swimming is a must, and visits to the archaeological sites of Chichen Itza and Tulum should be at the top of your list.

Yet away from the limelight, there are still plenty of things to see and do in and around Cancún. Enjoy day trips to Coba or Ek Balam if you're interested in Mayan cities or explore the Rio Secreto for adventurous immersion in nature. There are lots of offshore gems to visit on Cancún tours too, including Holbox Island and Contoy Island .

Cancún's hotels offer a wide range of cuisines for international tastes, but if you're looking for authentic Mexican fare, downtown is the place to go. Head to Parque Las Palapas for traditional street food sold from carts. Don't leave without popping into Mercado 28 to browse for artisan souvenirs to take home.

Keeping an eye on your budget? You can visit the beaches, see the street art in Cancún and go bird watching in Kabah Urban Park for free.
