Only 200 people per day are allowed to visit Isla Contoy , a protected natural reserve and bird sanctuary north of Cancún. Contoy Adventures takes you by boat to this preserved area, where you will have ample opportunities to swim and snorkel after you take a guided tour of the island. You'll also stop at Isla Mujeres on the way back to Cancún. Reviewers say they enjoy the excursion, but note that the stop at Isla Mujeres is short without much time to explore.

• Can you climb Chichen Itza? It is not possible to climb any structures at Chichen Itza. In 2006 authorities closed its pyramid and it is prohibited to climb.
• Do you need to book Chichen Itza tickets in advance? Chichen Itza is the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico and can be crowded. We recommend booking private tour for a worry-free experience, or make sure to arrive at the ticket counter before 08:00 AM in order to to avoid waiting in line. Wouldn’t refund me because we had to cancel because of a sick person.

Asked the tour guide about putting on pants brought with for ATV rode and was told not necessary. Should wear socks and pants even though tour guide says shorts and water shoes are fine. When told tour guide the ATV was burning leg was not taken seriously. Ended up with what are considered stage 1 level 2 burns (blistered and will leave scarring) the heat shield was not working properly. Had to seek medical attention for burns. Foot rests were also broken on ATV. With the exception of the issues wih ATV and injury had fun ziplining and swimming in cenote. Happy Tours called due to another reason and when told the Happy Tours caller about the burn and havig to seek medical attention got ignored.

I use Happy tours for all of my transportation needs .Now that they book excursions, even better. Had no issues booking tours on their website. Very simple and straightforward.

First, have correct snorkel vests. Life jacket is not good for snorkeling. Everything was just to rushed. Crew was great. And also platinum is not worth the xtra money. Other tours did exactly what we did. Just a few less people.

Wonders of the Maya

An excellent tour to appreciate and learn about the Mayan civilisation. Very happy to have done this. Miguel is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide with a good sense of humour. We felt very safe in the hands of our driver, Edgar. All of the hotels were decent and centrally located. We had a minor issue with the airport transfer to the hotel as we didn’t see anyone holding out a sign with our name. The assistance contact number provided by Destination Services was useless, no one answered when we called. Luckily we had the number of the guide, he helped us find the right guy in the busy Cancun airport!

Cannot fault Bamba Experience. This was my first time solo travelling, and they made it so easy. There is a downloadable itinerary with a chat option if you come across any problems. I had a couple of queries along the way, which Bamba quickly sorted. The hostels were brilliant, and all very close to the bus stations, making it easy to get from one place to another. My only small gripe is that the one in Tulum had no AC. I am from Scotland, and found this very difficult! The included Chichen Itza trip was the highlight, and the tour guide Frank was fantastic. I thoroughly recommend this trip, and would be happy to book with Bamba again in the future.

The Mystical Mayan Trail: A Trip Through Mexico's Vibrant Culture and Natural Beauty

Die Route und die Dauer der Tour durch das schöne Chiapas war für uns perfekt. Die Abwechslung von Natur und Kultur war optimal. Die Hotels waren bis auf eine Ausnahme (Palenque) gut, das Frühstück überall sehr gut. Der Comfort des Minibusses war ausbaufähig. Bei größerer Körpergröße gibt es eigentlich nur einen Sitzplatz, der in Frage kommt, der insbesondere auf längeren und kurvigen Strecken ungemütlich ist. Die Tourguides und Fahrer waren allesamt äußerst kompetent und freundlich. Insbesondere Hector und Francisco, die uns über mehrere Tage begleitet haben, haben die Reise zu etwas besonderem gemacht. Auch, weil sie uns bei gesundheitlichen Problemen beratschlagt haben. Am Ende der Reise konnten wir uns in Valladolid (statt Cancun) absetzen lassen, was unsere Weiterreise erleichtert hat.

This tour was AMAZING. Daniel, our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about all the Mayan sites we visited. He also did ALL THE WORK of securing admission tickets so that we did not have to wait in any long lines. Along the way, he took us to some wonderful & always delicious restaurants for lunch. He also advised us on good places to eat dinner in each of our hotel stays. What's more, he advised in several places to eat at the hotel since walking into the urban areas

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour, it was just what I was looking for. Daniel was a lovely guide. Lots of travelling but very well organised and sufficient time at each place, considering the itinerary. Very nice hotel in Valladolid. Hotel in Merida was in a good location but was noisy (though I was fine and slept well as I wore ear plugs ?).

Cenotes are a highlight of visiting Southern Mexico for a lot of people and a must-have experience while you’re in the Yucatan. Cenotes are natural freshwater sinkholes that were formed when the Chicxulub meteor crashed into the earth some 65 million years ago. 

(Yes, the same meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs and more than 90% of other life forms on Earth!) The meteor caused the earth’s surface to weaken and collapse. 

The result was the creation of more than 7,000 sinkholes (cenotes) across the Yucatan peninsula. This private tour will take you to the stunning Ecoparque Cenotes Zapote nestled in the heart of the lush, tropical jungle.

This is an early morning excursion to Chichen Itza, which is an ancient Mayan site.

The tour organized by Amigo Tours will last for 12 hours and you will be taken around the site and briefed of its history and culture.

These tours are typically offered between May and mid-September and you can book them well in advance.

The tours will also last for 7 hours which will include breakfast and lunch.

I would highly recommend carrying some medicine to prevent motion sickness if you are prone to that.

You may also want to inquire about rash guards as the operators are likely to discourage you from wearing sunscreen in the water in order to protect the reefs and local marine life.

You will arrive at the dock by 7:30 am after being picked up from the hotel.

It takes only 12 people every day and the operators treat all their guests with the greatest amount of comfort and luxury.

This includes an air-conditioned bus or van that will pick you up from your local hotel and drive to Coba and Tulum, archaeological sites that are located slightly more than an hour’s drive from Cancun.

You will be given two hours at each of these sites and you can explore on your own within that stipulated time.

Of course, the tour guides are always available if you would like anything clarified.

Isla Contoy is an island you must make a trip to if you are in Cancun.

This is a protected natural reserve and not too many visitors are allowed per day.

If you make a reservation early on, you and your family can be one of the 200 people that are allowed to visit the island everyday.

This preserved area offers some of the most stunning sights that nature can provide.

You will be able to spot a variety of different birds and also a vibrant marine life if you decide to snorkel.

On the way back to Cancun, you will also make a stop at Isla Mujeres, another stunning slice of nature in the Carribean Sea.

From the preliminary research I have conducted, I find that the reviews indicate this is a good tour for young adults, couples and groups of friends.

If you are traveling with a baby or young kids, you may find the atmosphere a bit too boisterous.

The cost of the ticket also includes breakfast and lunch and the tour begins at 9:30 in the morning and goes on till 5 pm every day.

Chichen Itza is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and ranks among Mexico's star attractions. This Mayan city features on many Cancún tours and is a great place to travel back in time. Hidden deep in the jungle, Chichen Itza will make you feel like a pioneer of old.

The main draw is the iconic pyramid, El Castillo. At 30 meters tall, this temple has kept watch over the city for centuries. It dominates the complex and will be the main focus of your photographs. 

During your visit to Chichen Itza, you'll also see the Temple of the Warriors, the Observatory and one of the world's first ball courts. As you wander around the atmospheric ruins, your guide will let you into secrets of the past with tales about those who once lived here.

Cenote Swim at the Yucatán Peninsula

Located near Chichen Itza , the Ik-Kil Cenote is one of the most visited in the region. Turquoise water fills this giant subterranean cavern, and light cascades down from the hole in the roof to create an ethereal underworld. Viewing platforms make for great photo vantage points and the cool waters are idyllic on a hot day.

Tulum Day Trip from Cancún
