Rates in USD $ Excluding additional costs, such as international flights, tips and personal items

Additional Costs Explained

The following list covers a few additional costs – some obvious, some less so – that you might need to add into your overall budget.

International flights

To keep costs down avoid flying during school holidays. Secondly, don't fly direct. Doing so is almost always more expensive than transiting a third country.

Rules and regulations vary by nationality and destination country, but all East African and many southern African countries charge for visas. Normally this is in the range of US$30-50 per person.

Accommodation

Check your flight schedule. If you arrive in the afternoon your tour may start the next day and so you might need accommodation before the tour start. The same rule might also apply at the end of your safari if you have an early morning flight.

Vaccinations

Health-wise you will probably need several vaccinations before arrival in most safari destinations. Malaria is widespread and a serious risk – it's recommended to take anti-malarial medication (seek advice from your local doctor).

Tips for drivers, waiters, room staff and guides can quickly add up. Bring a couple of hundred dollars in smaller bills to cover tips. To give you a hint: US$15 per person per day.

Travel Insurance

Don't even think about skipping this. A decent policy can cost anything from $50-$175 for two weeks.

8 factors influencing the cost of a safari

Now you’ve considered the additional costs you can start to look at all those other variables that can influence overall safari costs.

How many days you want to do a safari

We hardly need to state that the length of time you spend on an African safari has a direct impact on how much it’s going to cost you. And the more days you spend on safari (with the same company), the less you’re going to end up paying on a per day basis.

When you want to go

Visiting much of Africa during the school holidays costs more than going outside the holidays, but other local factors can also impact the cost of your safari. The majority of African national parks have periods when the wildlife spotting is better than other times. If you want to keep costs down, try visiting during a park’s off season. While this can mean less visible wildlife and, if it’s the Wet season, occasionally washed out roads, it does bring significantly lower prices, less tourists, and gorgeously lush countryside.

Where you want to go

Many people are surprised to discover that much of southern Africa, where park infrastructure is often better and self-drive and camping safaris easier, offers a cheaper safari experience than East Africa.

What level of accommodation you are comfortable with

As with any holiday, accommodation is going to eat up the lion’s share of your budget. Starting at the very top are the highly exclusive, tented camps often found in private or community conservancies. Deliciously romantic they might be, but there’s no getting away from the fact that these places cost a fortune. In high season many come in at a cool $2,000 per night for two people.

The location of the accommodation

One good way of saving money is by staying outside of the parks. The problem with doing this is that you’ll normally miss the first dawn light or the glow of dusk. Both of which are the prime animal spotting times.

How to get around

Most camps and lodges offer morning and evening safari drives. At the very top-end places these will be conducted in custom-made luxury safari jeeps. At the opposite end of the spectrum come the pop-top minibuses used by many budget safari companies. Be careful with these. Some companies make sure that every seat in the vehicle has someone sat on it and if you get a middle seat you won’t see much.

How exclusive you would like your experience to be

Head to big name parks such as Kruger in South Africa and you’ll find lower prices, but also tarmac roads and masses of other people. By contrast, head to one of the private concessions in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and you’re guaranteed peace and tranquility, but at a price.

Specific requirements due to interests or hobbies

National park boards are fully aware that people are willing to pay more to see a cheetah than a hornbill (a type of bird). Visiting a park with an abundance of large and visible mammals will invariably cost you more than visiting a small, low-key park where the wildlife attractions are more specialized. If keeping costs down is important then limit your time in big-name parks and instead get excited by the birds and the bees in the smaller, lesser known protected areas.

African Lion Safaris

Encounters with the icon of africa.

The true icon of Africa’s Big Five, the African lion is the symbol of strength and power, the epitome of any safari to wild Africa. Today, catching sight of this apex predator is one of the most sought-after prizes for almost every safari-goer, with regal prides located from East to South.

Observing the social aspect of lions' lives is one of the most memorable elements of an encounter with the species. Out on the wild African plains, females stalk big game as they feed on tasty grasses, prides nap in the shade and cubs play under the watchful eye of their mothers as males fight for the crown. Exploring via game drives and even walking safaris, witness the wild behaviours of these magnificent mammals.

Where can you see the African Lion?

African Lions are found in sub-Saharan Africa, with 80% of the population in eastern or southern Africa and three of the five largest populations in Tanzania. African Lions used to be found across most of the continent, but in recent decades they have disappeared from 12 sub-Saharan countries.

THE AFRICAN LION

  • Lions are notably the only sociable big cat, with prides formed of a few muscular males, crowned with a thick mane and measuring up to 3.5m long and up to 272kg.
  • Most of the hunting is done by the smaller more agile females, weighing between 110 kg and 168 kg, who will work together to hunt anything from small antelope up to buffalo and even giraffe; in Savuti in Botswana, they have learnt to hunt young elephant.
  • The males will often get involved to help tackle the dangerous animals. Males have a large mane of hair which can be beige or black depending on the individual and the area they live in.

African Lion Safari Destinations

  • Masai Mara National Reserve: A great place to see lions year-round in the flat, wide and open plains of the Masai Mara. In July, 2 million wildebeest cross the Mara River under the eyes of the hungry lions.
  • Serengeti National Park: Three of the five largest lion populations are in Tanzania and the Serengeti is one of the best spots to see lions due to the availability of food and the million wildebeest.
  • In Southern Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is one of Africas hidden treasures with only 6000 visitors a year. Second to the Serengeti, Ruaha is home to 10% of the worlds lion population so there is great opportunities to see lions around less safari vehicles.
  • The Ngorongoro Crater offers the oppourtunity to see the Big 5 in a different setting, in the worlds largest inactive volcanic caldera.
  • Okavango Delta: The Okavango Delta is the best place to see water-adapted lions in Africa, these lions are 15% larger than others and have adapted to hunting during the day when the buffalo are grazing. The permanent water and nutritious grasses makes the Okavango Delta the perfect habitat for buffalo and you may witness lions fighting them here.
  • Kruger National Park: Most of South Africa’s lions can be found in Kruger National Park. Being the size of Wales, it can be hard to find them, but South Kruger has way more lions as it is wetter and greener. We recommend staying at Sabi Sands, which is one of the most reliable places to see lions in Africa. Timbavati is also the best place to see white lions in Africa.

Lions are highly adaptable, and in Namibia you will find ‘desert-adapted’ or ‘desert-lions’, that have adapted to survive in the harsh landscape of little vegetation and prey. The best places to see lions in Namibia is in Kaokoveld and Damaraland, but be aware these lions are nomadic and you are not guaranteed to see them.

African Lion Conservation

In just 25 years, Africa’s lion population dramatically dropped with only 50% of their numbers remaining across the iconic landscapes of the continent. The IUCN classified these majestic creatures as “vulnerable” as a result, a subject of habitat loss and fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade, poaching and human-lion conflict.

It was as a result of this revelation that the Lionscape Coalition was formed, in response to the growing threat of extinction and the predictable knock-on effect this would have on Africa’s biodiversity. Lions are classed as an “umbrella species”; with a wild lion population thriving, the entire surrounding eco-system functions effectively, ultimately also affecting the livelihoods of those relying on ecotourism for survival. The Lionscape Coalition sees four commercial competitors, who share the bold vision of the Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) to double wild lion numbers by 2050, collaborate on lion conservation programmes across Africa. Putting all commercial considerations aside, this alliance brings to this initiative over 100 years of positive conservation and community impact throughout Africa.

Lions are a resilient species so the future looks bright. These animals will rapidly reproduce if their habitats are protected if communities have incentives to co-exist and protect them. Creating healthy ‘lionscapes’ which can benefit these local communities is key to the success of population decline being reversed and many other species will recover in the process.

When is the Best Time to See African Lions?

The best time to see lions is during the peak safari season from July to October. The cool, dry winter means less vegetation for wildlife to hide behind and the lack of rain means wildlife will congregate around the lakes and rivers and most wildlife wont stray too far from the little water left.

How much does an African safari cost? (and how to make it cheaper)

Wild dogs chasing a puku antelope in South Luangwa

Unfortunately, many people associate safaris with exorbitant prices and see it as a vacation that’s financially out of reach. You’ll be pleased to know this is not always the case. In the end, how much does an African safari cost comes down to what you’re looking for .

Yes, you can go on safari for USD 1000 per day. But you can also enjoy incredibly intimate safari experiences for much less than USD 100 per day.

How Much Does a Safari Cost?

Small herd of elephants stands on the edge of Madison Pan, with treehouse in the background, Hwange National Park

African safaris vary enormously in cost. There is the cheap and relatively cheerful, all the way up to some of the most expensive holidays on the planet.

You can enjoy good wildlife encounters for less than USD 100 per day. Expect to pay a minimum of USD 150 per day for the best destinations and a multi-day safari program. USD 250 per day and upwards is mid range.

How much does a safari cost in East Africa vs Southern Africa

In general, entry to mid-range East African safaris cost more than those in Southern Africa.

The park fees are higher and you cannot safari in your own vehicle. There are fewer public campsites so you are reliant on private camps.

For example, a safari on Tanzania’s Northern Circuit or anywhere multi-day trip in Kenya, is going to cost USD 200 per day and more.

Check out more detailed costs on the ultimate safari guides to Tanzania , Kenya , Zambia and gorilla trekking .

Cheaper park fees bring that cost down in Southern Africa. Many of the best safari destinations in Southern Africa are also very accessible, like Chobe National Park’s proximity to Livingstone and Victoria Falls . This limits private transport and further reduces costs.

Southern Africa has many smaller safari destinations. These don’t offer the ultimate wildlife experience but are a cheap alternative.

So how much does a safari cost in Southern Africa? You can get a good multi-day safari for under USD 150 per day .

Check out South Africa safari guide , Botswana safari guide , Namibia safari guide , and Zimbabwe safari guide .

What do you want and expect on a safari?

If you envision a safari with luxurious rooms, satellite television, air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, exotic cuisine, and your own fireplace, you may need to review your priorities.

Why are you going on an African safari? To sit in your room and watch television? Or to connect with your wild side?

If it’s too big, too beautiful, or too luxurious, it’s consequently going to hit your wallet hard. And it’s not going to be the best possible safari experience.

Luxury safari lodge in South Africa

However, if you’re content with common restroom facilities, decent food, and a small bungalow or safari tent, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the affordable costs of going on safari.

Remember that you’ll be staying in a stunning location . This alone makes the price worth it. And while it’s great to stay in the lap of luxury, the main part of the experience is the wildlife and game viewing , and that’s very similar regardless of your accommodation choice.

Most Safari Costs are Based on an All-Inclusive Formula

The well-known “all in” formula means that everything is included in your package: from air flights (if applicable) to park entries, accommodation, game activities, and meals.

Additional costs may apply for drinks and any other extra activities around the lodge, which include night drives, boat trips, and guided walks. Prices will vary from place to place. To give you a general idea, typical daily activities cost anywhere from $20-100 pp (higher prices in top safari destinations). But then again, they might even be part of the deal.

Sometimes the cost of an African safari is very off-putting. But in general, you shouldn’t need much to spend after buying your safari package. USD 200 per day may sound a lot, but when that includes everything , including the greatest wildlife encounters on Earth, it’s totally worth it.

The Easiest Way to Reduce Your Safari Costs

Beautiful male lion with safari jeep in the background, Kenya

Later in the article we will discuss all the variables, including transport, accommodation, season, activities and more. You will learn some easy tips for reducing your safari costs. But these pale into insignificance in comparison to this…

African safaris cost less when you book with a local African safari operator .

Local safari operators , whether in Tanzania or Botswana, are the experts. They will be guiding your safari, whether you book direct or via an international travel agent. Local operators operate on a budget. They have low overheads and employ local people on local wages.

Compare that to any travel agent in your home country. Or to any major online travel agent. All travel agents have big overheads and big wages, so they need to make more money.

Every travel agent makes money through commission . You pay them for a safari. They keep 25-50%. And pass the rest to the local safari operator.

Book a USD 300 a day African safari with a travel agent and you will get a USD 200 a day safari. But book a USD 300 a day safari directly with a local tour operator and you really will get a USD 300 a day.

Many people don’t trust local tour companies. But you can still find reviews and recommendations for local operators, just as you do for travel agents.

Some people visit Africa, haggle over the price of everything, and complain that they are being ripped off. But the same people are very happy spending thousands of dollars on staying in hotels owned by multinational corporations, and using travel agents who funnel their profits to shareholders.

Book with a local operator and you will get a better safari for a better price, plus more of your money will be used to support the local economy .

If you need assistance then we have a partnership with a pan-African expert who can connect you with trusted local safari operators.

Lodges will often have two areas: one with bungalows/rooms, and another with campsites or tents. The second option is by far the most cost-effective (unless you are looking at “Luxury Camping”, but we won’t go into that here). Prices are reasonable, where you’ll only pay a small fee of as little as $5-15 per day to put up your tent and use the ablutions.

Additionally, another advantage of camping is that you’ll be inherently closer to nature . Especially at night, when nocturnal animals roam by your tent or bizarre sounds haunt your sleep.

Your most common visitors at night will be sneaky hyenas and common bush babies . Moreover, it is not unusual to hear lion calls from a distance.

A personal experience from Michael Theys

Elephant right outside a lodge in Lower Zambezi

“I’ve personally experienced some interesting events on various occasions. One time, there was a huge bull elephant right outside my tent window. It was such an intense feeling. Besides being exciting, it was also a little intimidating. You could hear this tremendous animal smashing branches and crunching its food with a ravenous appetite. I was praying he wouldn’t suddenly decide to play with my tent! 🙂

Luckily, as you can tell, I’m still alive and well! I imagine that you might be figuratively jumping up and down on your seat as you read these sentences, but don’t worry. Many facilities are fenced off , and if not, they are guarded by armed men (quite often Maasai warriors in East Africa).

Regarding food, pay attention as this part is very important. Be on the look out for baboons and vervet monkeys that have a tendency to come and steal some of your belongings for themselves. Never leave anything lying around!  There’s a good chance that what you leave misplaced will be gone in an instant.”

Planning a camping safari

The only downside to camping is that it demands more organisation and effort . On some safaris you will have to take your own camping equipment with you.

In some cases however, equipment may be provided at the camp itself. You will need to bring your own groceries, though some facilities have their own shops (i.e. Skukuza, inside Kruger National Park). You’ll also have to cook your own food (eating at the restaurant is an option), and drive your own car in the game area.

Then there are camping safaris organised by tour operators. These are popular budget safaris in East Africa. An operator will bring all the equipment and use public campsites , which keeps costs down.

african lion safari cost

Bed and Breakfast Formula

One alternative to camping inside the park is to stay in the vicinity of the reserve . It’s not as unique an experience without the wildlife roaming around, but it can be a sensible choice if you’re on a tight budget.

Usually, there are a number of options available, ranging from hotels to hostels and guesthouses. Some hotels even have an impressive view overlooking the reserve itself, which is a great bonus as it gives you a flavour of the bush.

Residents vs Foreigner Fees

As you might expect, tourists are charged more than the locals to enter a conservation area. In most places the price difference is significant.

For instance, park entrances might be as low as $2 for a resident and as high as $100 for a foreigner . A place like Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania charges $80 per person and $200 per vehicle .

african lion safari cost

Africa Freak tip : If you’re on safari with friends who happen to be residents, it’s sometimes possible for you to enter as a local and pay the resident fee. Stay in the car, remain quiet, and let your pals do the talking.

It’s not always successful, but it’s worth a shot! 😉

How Much Does a Safari Cost (High vs Low Season)

Black-backed jackal trying to catch a dove at a waterhole

Dry season months are peak season for tourists and safari attractions in East Africa. In Southern Africa, peak season is during the cooler drier winter months.

Make sure that you have your reservations prepared well in advance , as places are often fully booked months beforehand. In South Africa for instance, areas of the Kruger are reserved up to a year ahead of time.

If you’re looking for a cheaper safari, try to plan your trip during the low season when the game viewing isn’t as good.

But “not quite as good” is a relative term. Whenever you visit, a safari is a magical experience. You can experience incredible sightings during the rainy season or tropical summer months.

In the dry season , wildlife must congregate around waterholes, which makes it easier to spot. But that doesn’t mean it disappears during the rest of the year. It’s still around. You just need to look a little harder. In some places of East Africa, when it really rains, dirt roads become impassable and several facilities are forced to close down.

Jeep crosses the river on an African safari in the Lower Zambezi

Driving your own vehicle or renting a car for a safari might be the cheapest available option, especially in Southern Africa. Park roads are well indicated and it’s possible to buy local maps at the entrance.

However self-driving is not always possible . In private game reserves and certain nature reserves, you can only go on safari with cars provided by the lodge or park.

How Much Does it Cost for an African Safari?

Aerial view of a hippo in the Okavango

Like all vacations and all unique experiences, the price of an African safari varies person by person . So instead of thinking about how much does an African safari cost, how about switching the question to something more meaningful.

Our recommendation is to think about how much is a safari worth to you .

An Africa safari is an unfiltered connection with the greatest wildlife and wildernesses on the planet. Africa is Africa – you can’t have the safari experience anywhere else!

There truly is nothing like it, this chance to go eye to eye with the greatest animals to walk our planet. Not only is an African safari an incredibly personal experience, it’s an experience that will change how you view the world .

So how much is that worth?

A member of the “Big 5” and perhaps Africa’s most iconic species, the African Lion is a highly sought after sighting while out on safari.

Lions sitting on a rock in Tanzania

Common Name – African Lion

Scientific Name – Panthera Leo

Current IUCN Red List Status – VU

Estimated no. of mature individuals – 23,000 -39,000

Lions are capable of living in a wide variety of habitats and are found across parts of sub-Saharan Africa (mostly Southern and Eastern Africa). Lions generally stick to areas such as grasslands, shrubs and open woodland – however a small number have adapted over generations to thrive in the harsh Namib Desert in Namibia.

The only cats that live in groups – known as prides – lion prides can comprise up to 40 individuals. Though rare to see prides of this size, it is possible. More often than not, prides sizes vary between 8-25 individuals. Most of the hunting is done by female lions working as a team, and who will hunt anything from small antelope to buffalo. Some lion prides have been known to specialise in hunting even larger prey including elephant and giraffe. Males will often only help at the last moment or to bring down large prey – sometimes they run in only when the hunt is over taking the biggest share!

Lion viewing Safaris

Most lion viewing across Africa is done by vehicle on morning and afternoon game drives. It’s a thrilling experience coming face-to-face with a lion in the wild and many guests find a lion encounter to be a major highlight of an African safari. The cats may even use the vehicle as spot for shade, and guides can often find their vehicle surrounded by a handful of lions hiding from the sun.

Lions are fascinating to watch, particularly the dynamic within the pride and many safari-goers will happily watch for hours as the lions hunt or play. Playful cubs interact with one another under the watchful eye of their mothers and sometimes, the cheeky cubs might antagonise a big grumpy male.

Walking safaris offer the chance to see smaller creatures and learn more about native plants, but on occasion there is a chance to see lions – and from a very different perspective. To walk in Africa is to be a part of Africa, leaving nothing but footprints behind. Zimbabwe’s Hwange and Mana Pools national parks along with Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park are some of the best places in Africa to experience a multi-day walking safari reminiscent of a by-gone era. Both offer a truly unique experience while walking amongst Africa’s big game creates live long memories others can only dream of.

When is the best time to see lions?

Like most other animals, the best time to see these cats is during the early morning and late afternoon when they are most active. During the day, lions will often find a shady spot to avoid the heat and conserve energy.

African Lion Facts:

Sleepy cats A lion can sleep for up to 20 hours in a single day.

Hear me roar Depending on the wind direction, you can hear a lion roar from up to 7 or 8 kilometres away.

Big appetites Like other cats, lions may not know when their next meal might come from, meaning that they will consume food at an extraordinarily fast rate. This also helps to explain why they need to sleep for so long, to enable digestion.

Night vision A lion’s night vision is up to 6 times more sensitive to light than humans.

Weight Male lions are much larger than females and can weigh as much as 190 kilograms (420 pounds)Desert-adapted Lions – Also known as ‘desert lions’ these lions can live without water for extended periods. To cover long distances over the hot desert sand their legs tend to be slightly longer than ‘regular lions’, whilst their coats are slightly thicker to combat the cold temperatures at night. The best place to see these lions is in Northern Namibia.

Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Map of top African safari destinations

Where you choose your safari location will dictate the cost.

For example, Botswana is one of the most expensive safari destinations whereas South Africa and Zimbabwe offer more affordable options.

For more comparisons between all the top 7 safari destinations, check out my article below.

Lion Sands River Lodge fire pit

There are typically 3 price points  for safari lodges: moderate, premier, and luxury.

For example, in South Africa, a moderately priced safari lodge in Sabi Sands will cost you around $300-$700 USD per person, a premier lodge will cost around $800-$1200 USD per person, and an ultra-luxury lodge will cost about $2000+ USD per person.

Quite the range. Impeccable service and food and a smaller number of rooms (and thus guests) come at a premium.

We stayed at Lion Sands River Lodge in Sabi Sands, South Africa for one of our safari experiences. It was incredibly luxurious without being pretentious and had some of the best staff we have encountered.

We also had another amazing safari experience at Chobe National Park in Botswana.

We used the Stanley & Livingstone Boutique Hotel in Zimbabwe as our base, which was absolutely stunning. The hotel also offered its own safari drives right on its property.

Stanley & Livingstone Boutique Hotel guest lounge area

To give you a sense of the price points, I constructed a chart comparing the cost of the safari lodges we had researched in the Sabi Sands and Timbavati private game reserves in South Africa.

Motswari (Timbavati/Umbabat): from ZAR 4,959 ($279 USD)

Arathusa (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 7,729 ($435 USD)

Kambaku River Sands (Timbavati): from ZAR 9,834 ($553 USD)

&Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge (Timbavati):  from ZAR 10,199 ($573 USD)

Inyati (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 11,305 ($636 USD)

&Beyond Kirkman’s Kamp  (Sabi Sand) from ZAR 11,434 ($643 USD)

* Timbavati properties, in general, will be cheaper than Sabi Sand

* Exchange rates are accurate as of 10/5/22. These rates are starting rates and will vary depending on the season.

Lion Sands (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 15,114 ($850 USD)

Londolozi Varty Camp (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 18,645 ($1049 USD)

Savanna (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 12,947 ($728 USD)

Dulini (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 19,129 ($1076 USD)

MalaMala  (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 15,730 ($885 USD)

Silvan (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 19,614 ($1104 USD)

Singita (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 32,959 ($1855 USD)

Londolozi Pioneer Camp (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 31,625 ($1780 USD) or the Private Granite Suites (Sabi Sand): from ZAR 33,495 ($1885 USD)

If this is your first time planning a safari, don’t miss my article on how to choose a safari lodge.

We stayed at Lion Sands River Lodge in Sabi Sand, South Africa during the month of September.

If we had stayed at the end of December, we would have paid $250 USD more per person per night. Staying during the peak season will drive the price up dramatically.

For me, the ideal time is picking the shoulder season that still coincides with the dry season.

Courtesy of Shutterstock: small propellor plane in the African bush

Some safari destinations can be quite remote, and others are near well-established airports. The location of the safari lodge will dictate the cost of transfers via plane or car.

We stayed at Lion Sands River Lodge, which is about a 25-minute drive from the local airport, Skukuza Airport. Because of the lodge’s close proximity, transfers were included in our lodge rate.

Plus, Skukuza Airport had direct flights to/from major airport hubs like Cape Town and Johannesburg, which made the internal flights more affordable. The cost per passenger when we went was $480 USD through SA Airlink.

If you are trying to reach more inaccessible lodges, the African safari cost is going to be much higher because you are relying on light charter flights.

2-week South Africa itinerary

If you fly to a destination where the safari experience is the only activity, your cost is going to be higher than if you combine it with more affordable destinations.

The safari will be the most expensive part of your trip.

One reason why South Africa is such a desirable safari location is that it can be combined with places such as Cape Town and the Cape Winelands which are significantly less expensive.

PRO TIP : We offset our African safari cost in Sabi Sands by staying at much more affordable accommodations while in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands. Splurge on the safari experience and then pick more budget-friendly hotels in the other destinations.

You can get incredible value for your money while staying in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands.

We stayed at the highly-rated Derwent House Boutique Hotel while in Cape Town and the adorable bed & breakfast Cape Vue Country House while in Cape Winelands.

Both properties offered incredible value for the money, which drove the overall cost of our trip down.

Derwent House Boutique Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa

Obviously, the more days you spend, the higher the African safari cost.

However, some safari lodges like Singita Kruger National Park will offer a nice package deal such as “Stay 4 Days/Pay for 3.”

Always be on the lookout for these special deals to reduce your African safari cost.

Two lionesses consuming a giraffe in Sabi Snds Private Game Reserve

National parks tend to be much more affordable than private game reserves.

For example, if you stay in Kruger National Park in South Africa, which is owned and managed by the government, the cost is going to be substantially cheaper but much more crowded.

In contrast, if you stay in a private reserve in Sabi Sands in South Africa, the cost will be higher but fewer people and jeeps and more close-up wildlife encounters.

If you want to know more differences between Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands, check out my article below.

Our safari ranger and tracker at Lion Sands River Lodge

What do I mean by “the extras”?

Think tipping, airport transfers, laundry, park fees & permits, premium drinks, etc.

It is important to factor in all fees because they can certainly add up quickly. For example, if you are going to Rwanda to see gorillas, the gorilla trekking permit alone costs $1500 USD per person!

Also, it is imperative to know what is included in your all-inclusive safari lodge rate. For example, some lodges charge for premium drinks.

Laundry service is another factor to consider. You cannot carry much weight in your luggage on those little planes. Packing light is important, which will likely require you to do laundry while at the lodge. Some lodges will include it, and some will not.

That is why I’m a big fan of the incredibly lightweight Anatomie travel clothing, specifically the Kate Skinny Cargo pants . They take up very little room in the suitcase.

An Africa safari is one of the most expensive vacations you will probably take. The staff at these safari lodges go above and beyond to take great care of you. The safari guides are spending at least 6+ hours with you daily to deliver an exclusive experience.

I know this is a touchy subject because every country has a different tipping culture, but please consider showing your appreciation for good service by leaving a tip. Budget accordingly.

It is customary in Africa to tip the staff (but not mandatory).

Courtesy of Shutterstock: Safari jeeps watching a lion

If you want more flexibility and are looking to cut costs, you can do a self-drive safari in certain countries such as South Africa.

For example, in Kruger National Park, many opt to rent a car and drive independently around the park looking for the animals.

Although you have the freedom of when and how long you want to stay in each location, you do not have the expertise and knowledge of a guide who can greatly add to your experience.

Most African countries will quote and charge you in USD. There are a few countries, however, like South Africa and Namibia, that only quote the cost in their own currency.

Because the currency exchange rate is volatile, your US dollar could stretch further if the rate is favorable. The opposite, of course, would be true as well.

Breakdown of how we saved over $6800 USD on our 2-week Africa trip

I am NOT a travel agent who gets discounts on properties.

I am NOT an influencer who gets sponsored free trips.

I work full-time, have limited PTO hours, and take 3-4 vacations a year.

So, how am I bringing my African safari cost down?

Airline and credit card points!

An African safari is usually just one component (and the most expensive!) of most travelers’ Africa itinerary. The key to making this epic trip affordable is knowing where to spend and where not to spend and utilizing airline and credit card points to erase some or all of the cost.

A premier safari experience in Sabi Sands, South Africa for 2 people for 3 nights/4 days costs around $5,400 USD.

So, how did we save over $6,800 for our entire 2-week Africa trip ? 2 ways. Let’s break it down.

Courtesy of Shutterstock: airplane

We used 2 different strategies for the major international legs of our Africa trip:

UNITED POINTS:  For this Africa trip, we used 40,000 United points per person (+ nominal $11 USD per person for taxes) to pay for our flight from the United States to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

The cash price per person for the flight would have been $1,121 USD. Our total savings for two people was $2,220. The redemption value was 2.8 cents per mile.

By the way, one strategy for getting a bulk amount of points is to sign up for a travel credit card during a big sign-up bonus promotion, where you have to meet x amount of minimum spend within x amount of months.

VIRGIN ATLANTIC POINTS: For our return flight from Johannesburg, South Africa back to the United States, we used 22,500 Virgin Atlantic points per person (+ $350 USD per person for taxes).

The cash price per person for the flight would have been $888 USD. Our total savings for two people was $1,076. The redemption value was 2.4 cents per mile.

How did we get Virgin Atlantic points? From my Amex Membership Reward (MR) Points.

If you want to know more about travel hacking tricks and how to know if you are getting a good redemption value, don’t miss my travel hacking 101 guide.

Chase Trifecta Travel Credit Cards

What credit cards we used and how we used them:

AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM

We used Amex Membership Reward (MR) points to pay for our international flight home from Johannesburg to the United States.

We transferred 22,500 MR points to Virgin Atlantic at a 1:1 transfer rate. Our total cost was 22,500 points + $350 USD for taxes/fees per person for a flight that would have cost $888 per person.

Our total savings for two people was $1076.

CHASE SAPPHIRE RESERVE

We used 239,138 Chase Ultimate Reward (UR) points to pay for the majority of our hotels on our Africa trip. That saved us a whopping $3,587.07!

When you redeem your UR points through the Chase travel portal for hotels (or flights if you choose), you redeem at 1.5x the rate .

What does that mean?

Pretend you have 200,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, which is equal to $2,000 USD. If you redeem those same 200,000 points through the travel portal, they are now worth $3,000 USD. Incredible value!

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL CREDIT CARD.

An African safari was one of the most memorable travel experiences we’ve had. It can be quite expensive depending on the location and quality of the safari lodge.

You can make it quite budget-friendly by picking cheaper safari locations, going during low season, doing a self-drive safari, and picking a more affordable safari lodge.

Since this was a trip of a lifetime for us and we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary, we wanted a little more luxury.

When we started planning our African safari and adding up the costs, it was clear the price for our dream vacation was much higher than our travel budget would allow.

Luckily, because we had started to accumulate airline and credit card points years ago, we were able to cash in those points to erase much of the African safari cost. Those airline and credit card points made this epic trip a reality.

Lindsey Slaby

Hi there! I was about to book Lion Sands on Chase but cant find it anymore as their booking look up has gotten more complex. What did you use to find it? An airport code?

Nichole

Thanks for reaching out. I booked 3 out of the 4 Africa hotels we stayed at (Derwent in Cape Town, Cape Vue in the Cape Winelands, and Stanley & Livingstone in Zimbabwe) through the Chase travel portal. Lion Sands was the only one I didn’t book through Chase. I went through booking.com: https://www.booking.com/hotel/za/lion-sands-private-game-reserve.en-gb.html .

I just checked to see if Lion Sands was on the Chase travel portal, and I could not find it either (even with using the airport code, SZK). I’m surprised though because it’s a MORE property, and their other property (Stanley & Livingstone in Zimbabwe) is on there. You could always call Chase just to make sure.

Part of the African Safari Collection

An African lion safari is the perfect experience to bask in nature and see stunning wildlife in their most natural habitat. While many people love the Lion Country Safari at the Palm Beach County Lion Zoo in Florida, travelers increasingly seek ethical alternatives to interact with one of nature’s fiercest predators.

But what are your options for ethical wildlife experiences beyond this lion safari park? Read more to find the 10 best authentic lion encounters as you traverse Africa!

1. Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

The Lower Zambezi National Park offers a unique landscape where lions are often observed hunting along the riverbanks. The park’s geography, with its mix of riverside and rugged terrain, influences the lions’ behavior and hunting strategies, making for compelling viewing, especially in the dry season.

The tranquility and unspoiled nature of the area make it ideal for those seeking an authentic wildlife experience, where the focus is on observing lions’ behavior and interactions in a peaceful setting, away from the bustling crowds.

2. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Serengeti is a world-renowned ecosystem, hosting one of the densest populations of lions in Africa. The lions here are particularly known for their large prides and strategic hunting tactics during the Great Migration . This annual event sees over a million wildebeest and zebras traverse the plains, providing a feast for the lions.

The open savannas of the Serengeti offer spectacular views of these lions in action, showcasing their social structure and cooperative hunting strategies.

3. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

In Kenya’s Masai Mara, the lion prides are celebrated for their strength and size. Masai Mara National Reserve becomes a hotspot for lion activity during the annual migration, where they actively hunt the migrating herds. This period, typically from July to October, offers exceptional opportunities to observe lions in their natural hunting grounds.

Masai Mara’s vast plains and scattered acacia trees provide a picturesque backdrop for watching these magnificent predators in action.

4. Etosha National Park, Namibia

Etosha National Park in Namibia presents a unique environment for lion watching. Adapted to the semi-arid climate, the lions here are often found near waterholes, providing spectacular wildlife viewing. The dry season, from May to October, is the ideal time to observe these majestic predators as they hunt and interact with other species.

The park’s open terrain and sparse vegetation offer clear visibility, making it a favorite for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

5. Kruger National Park, South Africa

South Africa’s Kruger National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity, hosting a significant lion population. The park’s diverse landscapes, ranging from dense bushveld to riverine forests, support a rich variety of prey for the lions. This diversity allows for a unique insight into the adaptability and hunting techniques of Kruger’s lions.

The lions in Ngorongoro are accustomed to vehicles, allowing for intimate wildlife encounters and exceptional photographic opportunities.

7. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park is known for its robust lion population. The park’s diverse landscapes, from teak forests to open savannas, offer varied habitats for lions. The dry season, from July to October, is particularly rewarding for lion sightings as they congregate near water sources.

8. Okavango Delta, Botswana

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a unique wetland ecosystem, home to a variety of wildlife, including a healthy population of lions. These lions have adapted to the delta’s seasonal flooding, displaying unique behaviors such as swimming and hunting in shallow waters.

The delta’s intricate network of waterways and islands provides a stunning backdrop for observing these majestic predators in a truly unique setting.

9. Chobe National Park, Botswana

Botswana’s Chobe National Park is renowned for its high concentration of wildlife, including a large population of lions. The park’s diverse environments, from the lush Chobe Riverfront to the dry Savuti area , offer varied contexts for observing lion behavior.

The dry season, from April to October, is particularly rewarding as animals gather around the remaining water sources, providing excellent opportunities for lion sightings.

10. Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania

Selous Game Reserve is an expansive, untouched wilderness ideal for observing lions. Its diverse landscapes of riverine forests, grassy plains, and thickets provide a habitat-rich environment for lions, showcasing their natural behaviors from hunting to nurturing young.

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness

Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

We enjoyed the experience. The only negative place was the lodge in Hwange, totally substandard, we were supposed to be there 2 nights but moved out after the first night. Must mention Mark, Fines, Peace and the other 2 guides that went over and above their duties to satisfy our needs.

Highly professional all around We travelled as a couple with Serengeti African Tours and received excellent service from start to end. We did a 7 day safari plus Zanzibar as an add on. With an extremely professional and skilled guide, a highly organised booking team and an amazing selection of lodges/tented camps to stay in we had an all around amazing trip. The quality of the food, the staff and the accommodation was 5 star all around. Would highly recommend anyone to do a private safari with this company, you will be looked after from start to end. The small extras including asking what kind of drinks we would like in the vehicle and the gift of a wine for a special celebration was also a really lovely touch. Great value for money with the amount of food, the private tour and types of accommodation. Luxury and mid range available

African Safari Tour Reviews

Our guide Muddy was excellent. He knew where to find his animals and he was patient and accommodating. Thank you Muddy for an amazing safari experience. The safari lodge was great but the hotels were average. Knowing that we cannot drink out of the tap, I don't appreciate having to pay extra for drinking water at the hotels. Food was one item that they can improve on, especially the boxed lunch. The overall experience was great....we saw all of the big 5 plus more. I would recommend this tour....just be realistic with the accommodations and the food.
Everything was Amazing
A bit late with the review... The trip was November 2019 and it was the best trip ever!!! Simon best guide, stunning places, welcoming locals and amazing experiences! the flight over the Okavango Delta is highly recommended.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost? Your Best Budget Africa Safari Guide

Posted by Luke Hardiman on August 28 2023 in African Safari Costs Enquire Now!

To get started, basic African safari costs start at around US$ 150 per person per day for an all-inclusive budget safari package. That's the no-frills budget safari, that stays at basic campsites and takes advantage of off-season rates. On the other end of the African safari cost spectrum, the sky is the limit in terms of luxury safaris if you want to spend more.

The most important thing to remember is that safari costs sit on a sliding scale and  seasonality , level of accommodation , and the destinations you want to visit will all affect your safari costs. The idea is that by tweaking these factors individually, it becomes possible to find the African safari cost option that is perfect for you and your budget.

Based on our experience supplying African safari tours, African Budget Safaris has a comprehensive list of popular African budget safari packages. These safari tours offer a no-fuss planning experience that provides excellent value for money. You don't have to compromise on quality, even at the cheaper end of the spectrum, where a budget safari costs from US$ 150 to US$ 300 per person per day.

Please note: The safari prices in this post are correct as of August 2023. For the most current pricing, contact one of our Africa travel experts

Factors Affecting the Cost of African Safari Trips

Planning an African safari on a budget can be daunting, and the cost of an African safari will depend on various factors. The good news is that there is an African safari for every budget. Factors that will affect how much your African safari costs include accommodation or level of comfort, flexibility of dates and whether you can travel out of peak safari season, mode of transport for example driving or flying, the size of your group, your chosen destination or destinations, and finally the duration of your trip. These factors will all affect the cost of an African safari. There are a few safari budget misconceptions that we should look at before we get into the details.

How Much are African Safaris? Figuring out your Safari Cost Per Day

The most important thing is to work out the cost of your African safari, is what your safari budget looks like. Generally speaking, safari costs fall into three categories, budget safaris, mid-range safaris, and luxury safaris. Below we have safari costs based on US dollars per person per day safari prices. These budget price ranges are designed to help you figure out how much you can expect to spend per day on your African safari cost. The African safari packages that these price brackets are based on, range from 1 day to 56 days in length, so once you know more or less the cost of an African safari per person per day, you can then figure out how long you can afford to go on safari.

  • US$ 150 - US$ 300 -  Budget Safari Tours
  • US$ 360 - US$ 550 per person per day -  Mid-Range Safaris
  • US$ 450 - US$ 1,000+ per person per day - Affordable Luxury Safaris
  • US$ 300 - US$ 1,000+ Per day - Tailor-made Custom Safaris & Private Tours

Botswana safari cost

US$ 150 - US$ 300 Per Day - Standard Budget African Safari Costs

How much does a budget African safari cost? Well, for the budget-savvy traveller, the budget safari range is perfect. Most importantly, you get to see and experience the magic of Africa. Budget safaris save money on accommodation, and are a mix of camping and the odd lodge or B&B, basic meals, and are a little bit more wild and have a little less pizazz. The other safari cost factor is group size and duration, as more people on your safari translates to better deals, and the cheaper the cost per day, the longer people tend to travel. The costs of the budget safari option can be broken down into the following categories:

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania safari cost

US$ 360 - US$ 550 Per Day - Mid-Range Safari Costs

Mid-range safari packages will provide more care and comfort but still keep exotic destinations at the heart of things. Mid-range safari costs are a good compromise as often there are fewer people in groups, and the durations are less arduous.

Victoria Falls safari costs

US$ 450 - US$ 1000 Per Day - Luxury Safaris for Less

How much does a luxury safari cost? In the luxury safari price range, you will not want for any sense of luxury, great food, great accommodation, and even the bee's knees:

Camping on Salt Pan, Botswana safari

US$ 300 - US$ 1,000+ Per day - Custom & Private Safari Costs

With this option, not only is the world your oyster but you also get to decide when, where, and how it gets served. Oh, and did I mention you can have your cake AND eat it?

Private tours and custom safari costs are not automatically higher than packaged group tours. Tailor-made and private safaris can be a cost-effective safari option, especially when you are travelling in a big group. Our budget safari experts can also tailor your safari costs to suit your budget and help you save money without compromising on the quality of your safari experience.

The cost of a custom or private safari depends on a number of factors that include destination, mode of transport, duration, and seasonal availability. African Budget Safari prides itself on delivering high-quality African safari experiences that cater to the needs of the individual. We specialize in small-group, private, and tailor-made tours, and have an excellent selection of ready-to-go private safari tours .

Our experienced safari travel consultants are available to answer any and all of your safari questions, and you can  drop us a message here  and one of the team will get right back to you.

Where You Go & How You Travel Affects Your Safari Costs

Your chosen destination will affect your African safari cost and budget. Generally, the more remote the location, the more expensive. South African safari , where visitors benefit from a favourable exchange rate and a competitive accommodation market, are typically cheaper than East African safari tours where park fees are significant, pricing is based in US dollars, and there are fewer options. To give you an easy-to-see safari guide, we have broken down each safari cost bracket in terms of the relevant destinations and the  types of trips applicable.

Spending More Doesn't Always Amount to a Better Safari Experience

It comes down to personal preference, but your African safari cost is not necessarily a reflection of the quality of the experience. To give an example, some travel styles are cheaper than others. A camping overland trip costs less per day than a lodge-based safari, but if you like travelling in a group and camping out under the stars, you may well enjoy it more than a lodge-based experience.

To find out more about each travel style, follow the green links in the tables to go to the main listing page for that safari type. There you will find a detailed description of what to expect for the given style of safari trip - in the first column.

Why the Cost of an African Safari Can be Budget-Friendly

Over the years the  African safari  experience has been actively promoted as a luxury item, that is costly. Why is that? The main reason is that luxury travel is where the big bucks are to be made for luxury travel agents. These travel agents leverage the excess of past presidents, royals, and superstars to create an aura of elitism. Exclusive safari experiences, with private guides, chauffeur-driven airport transfers, five-star accommodations, haute cuisine, charter flights, and other needless expenses can run into hundreds and thousands of dollars. Nice for some, but not for everyone.

How much DOES an African safari cost? The truth is that African safaris today offer affordability and outstanding value for money. That's right, affordable safaris exist! African Budget Safaris has a huge range of safari trips to suit every travel style and length of stay. This means that

To start your journey,  check out our budget safari search  to get an idea of what's available. We cover 14 different African countries from  South Africa  to  Kenya  and beyond.

For more details about safari costs, see our  African Safari Cost Guide  or contact African Budget Safaris and talk to one of our African travel experts.

Lion Hunt in South Africa: Ultimate Lion in South Africa Guide

In the vast bushveld of Africa, where the circle of life plays out, one animal is the true king of the bush, the magnificent African Lion. As a member of the dangerous game and Big Five animals, the Lion embodies strength, grace, and abundant courage. With its majestic mane and awe inspiring presence, it stands as the king of beasts in the animal kingdom. A lion hunting safari is not to be taken lightly, but a thrilling pursuit that tests the limits of human resolve, skill and courage. You will experience an adrenaline rush as the hunter faces the challenge of outwitting these magnificent predators in their natural wild habitat. The challenge of a hunt in South Africa for Lion is an incredible adventure that brings together the allure of Africa’s wild places, the indomitable spirit of the African Lion, and the ultimate test of human resolve.

Hunting methods for lion in south africa.

Lion hunting methods used on a South African hunting safari encompass a varied range of strategies tailored to the area and conditions.

The Baiting Method

One widely employed technique is hunting over bait. Large baits such as Buffalo or Zebra are strategically positioned to attract lions at the height of a grown mans head. Hanging baits at this height prevents other predators such as Hyena, Jackal and Leopard from feeding on the carcass. Once a Lion starts to feed on the bait the signs such as tracks and long mane hairs are evaluated to determine if a big maned male is present. A ground blind or elevated platform known as a machan are then built and the hunters wait for the lion to return.

An alternative method is to carefully stalk the bait at sunrise or sunset, in the hope of finding the lion still feeding. This method demands stealth and precision as the hunter stalks the lion on the bait, carefully closing the distance while maintaining the utmost caution and stealth to avoid being seen or heard.

Track and Stalk Method

The Track and Stalk Method of lion hunting is method often employed on a hunt in the Kalahari desert of Botswana and areas where you have sandy terrain. It begins by finding fresh lion tracks, carefully examining the imprints left on the ground to gauge the direction and possible proximity of the lion. This process requires a good tracker and an intimate knowledge of their habits, enabling the hunter to anticipate their possible intentions and proceed accordingly.

As the tracks lead deeper into the thick bush, the hunter must walk at a decent pace in order to catch up with the lion. This requires physical endurance and mental focus, as the pursuit can cover vast distances through entangled brush. The tension builds as the hunters navigate through thick vegetation, fully aware of the inherent dangers that may lie in wait close by. Lions are powerful and stealthy animals, capable of hiding within dense vegetation, making it imperative for the hunter to remain cautious and alert throughout the tracking process.

African Lion Hunting – The Approach

Safety considerations are of the utmost importance during a lion hunt, and experienced hunters must make critical decisions based on the circumstances. If the conditions become too hazardous or the risks outweigh the potential rewards, the hunt may be aborted to prioritize the safety of all involved. If the situation remains manageable, the hunter continues the hunt with cautious determination.

Approaching a lion requires the utmost care. The hunter must move silently, minimizing any sudden movements that could alert the lion to their presence. Finding a suitable position for a clear shot is essential, ensuring a clean and effective kill. The adrenaline surges as the hunter prepares to take the shot, fully aware that shot placement is crucial for a successful outcome. The vital areas, such as the heart and lungs, are targeted to swiftly incapacitate the lion, minimizing suffering and ensuring a humane kill.

Make the first shot count, you do not want to wound these big cats, this creates an extremely dangerous situation. In the event of a dangerous situation, a quick reload and the involvement of a backup shooter will become essential. Lions are formidable adversaries, and the ability to react quickly and decisively is vital for the safety of everyone involved. The backup shooter (normally a competent P H) provides an additional layer of protection, ready to intervene if the situation becomes precarious. Should a lioness be present you can generally expect a charge from her straight after the shot goes off. Unlike a Leopard a wounded lion will normally growl before a charge.

The overwhelming excitement and the realization of a successful lion hunt are incomparable to any other big game hunting. The culmination of tracking, stalking, and executing the perfect shot fills the hunter with a sense of accomplishment and respect for these majestic cats. It is a moment that encapsulates the primal connection between mankind and the wilderness, reminding us of our place in the intricate tapestry of nature.

Lion hunting in South Africa - Hunters with Lion trophy

Trophy Lion Hunts

Trophy evaluation is an integral part of lion hunting, requiring the Professional guide to assess the quality and maturity of the animal. The evaluation often takes into account factors such as skull size and the quality of the lion’s mane. A larger skull indicates an older and more mature lion, while the larger and darker the mane signifies a top trophy. This evaluation process contributes to the conservation efforts of ensuring the sustainability of lion populations by selectively targeting older males, thereby allowing younger males to assume dominant roles and ensuring the genetic diversity and health of lion prides.

Conservation efforts and the need to protect this iconic species have led to strict regulations governing lion hunting. Hunting permits are carefully managed and allocated to ensure sustainable practices and prevent overexploitation. This approach acknowledges the intrinsic value of lions as apex predators and the importance of maintaining their populations for the overall health and balance of the ecosystem. Responsible hunters recognize the significance of these restrictions and actively participate in conservation efforts while engaging in legal and controlled Lion hunting.

Shot Placement on Safari

Shot placement is a critical aspect of hunting, particularly when targeting powerful and formidable animals like lions. It refers to the precise location on the animal’s body where the bullet or arrow should be placed to ensure a swift and ethical kill. In the context of lion hunting, where you place your shot is of the utmost importance to minimize suffering and ensure the hunting party’s safety. The objective is to deliver a well placed shot that targets vital areas such as the heart and lungs. Aiming for these specific areas maximizes the chances of incapacitating the lion quickly, leading to a efficient humane kill. Knowledge of the animals anatomy, understanding their skeletal and muscular structure are crucial factors that contribute to the hunter’s decisions on shot placement. This level of precision and accuracy in shooting is not only a testament to the hunter’s skill but also a reflection of their ethical commitment to ensuring the principles of responsible hunting.

To achieve this, hunters are recommended to use calibers with sufficient stopping power, such as the .375 H&H Magnum or 416 Rigby or Remington magnum. The .375 is considered the minimum caliber for hunting Lion or any other dangerous game in most African countries. These cartridges provide the necessary kinetic energy to effectively incapacitate the lion, minimizing suffering and ensuring a clean kill. While lions can be effectively put down with a 30-06, 300 Winchester Magnum or similar cartridge this practice is not recommended on a dangerous game hunt.

Safety and Ethical Considerations When Hunting Lions

Safety and ethical considerations are of paramount importance in lion hunting, reflecting the responsible approach of hunters towards both their own well-being and the preservation of these magnificent cats. Working with Hunting Outfitters and well qualified Professional Hunters ensures a structured and informed approach to the hunt, with hunters adhering to their instructions and guidance. This collaboration emphasizes safety protocols, including the use of proper rifle cartridges, adherence to firearm safety, and understanding the behavior and warning signs that lions emit. Prioritizing safety measures during encounters with lions is crucial, as these apex predators command respect and demand caution. Maintaining a safe shooting distance, avoiding unnecessary risks, and being prepared for uncontrolled and unpredictable situations are fundamental aspects.

Ethical considerations encompass the conservation of lion populations and the promotion of sustainable hunting practices. This involves adhering to strict hunting regulations and licensing restrictions, selectively targeting older males to allow younger males to assume dominant roles and contribute to the genetic diversity and health of lion prides, contributing to the conservation of these iconic beasts.

Lion hunting encapsulates the challenges of engaging with one of Africa’s most iconic animals. The pursuit of a big male African Lion represents a dream fulfilled for many hunters, as they embark on a thrilling adventure that tests their skills and deepens their connection with the untamed wilderness. Working closely with Professional guides and respecting conservation efforts is an essential part of a dangerous game hunt. Lions play a vital role in the delicate balance of the ecosystem, and the appreciation of their significance further enriches the hunting experience. With an understanding of the primal nature of these creatures, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, and the commitment to responsible hunting, the pursuit of lions becomes a testament to the harmonious coexistence of humans and wildlife in the vast African bushveld.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

My tent was luxurious and equipped with a comfortable king bed and a large living room.

I’ve found Africa’s best-value safari holiday

Malawi is half the cost of hot spots like tanzania and zambia — but there’s nothing cut-price about the wildlife, lodges and guides, our writer discovers.

An elephant by Shire River in Liwonde National Park

C hoosing the best tree to climb is never easy, especially when your life depends on it. “This one could be good,” suggested Nelio Stewart, an experienced rhino tracker, who assesses tree trunks in the same way a safety officer might mark out emergency escape routes.

The sturdy, broad-boughed tamarind ahead of us certainly looked scalable, despite the trails of army ants and swarming bees. Smirking at me, Stewart added: “They won’t be a problem when there’s a black rhino on your tail.”

According to the team of experienced trackers in Malawi’s Majete Game Reserve, 80 per cent of scouting missions end in some form of tree scrambling. Never have I wanted more to be in the minority.

Native to the region, black rhinos became locally extinct in the 1980s due to rampant poaching. But a successful reintroduction programme started in 2003 has spawned a healthy new population, carefully monitored by a team so attuned to the animals’ behaviour they can even identify individuals by their spoors.

It’s one of several good news stories unfolding in the protected areas of Malawi, where rewilding efforts are quietly transforming the developing east African country into a respectable safari option. Despite being landlocked, sparkling beaches fringe Lake Malawi — one of the deepest lakes in the world — presenting opportunities for a beach and bush break.

A black rhino in Malawi

Last month’s decision to waive visas for 79 countries, including the UK, is part of the government’s ambitious plan to put tourism on a par with countries such as neighbouring Zambia and Tanzania. Malawi is lesser known than these wildlife giants, and safari holidays remain considerably cheaper at an average £3,000 for seven nights — almost half the price of an equivalent trip elsewhere.

Several days earlier, I’d flown into the business hub Blantyre in southwest Malawi via Johannesburg. (There are no direct flights from the UK, although the Malawian government is in discussion with several airlines about the possibility of intercontinental flights.) Only a 90-minute drive away, making it a popular weekend getaway for the city’s expats, Majete is emerging as one of the country’s flagship wildlife destinations due largely to the efforts of African Parks, a conservation NGO that works in partnership with governments to manage their wildlife resources.

When it signed a mandate with the Malawian government for Majete in 2003, all elephants, rhinos and large carnivores had disappeared. Not a single tourist had visited the park in three years. But the reintroduction of 17 species has transformed it over the past 21 years; according to a 2022 census there are 12,000 animals. Now elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes, cheetahs and wild dogs can all be seen, and tourist numbers exceed 13,000 per year.

Mvuu Camp

“The story of absolute destruction and hope is one that has impressed people over and over again,” said the park manager, John Adendorff, driving back from our early morning rhino trek, which (somewhat thankfully) had been fruitless. A blueprint for rewilding and regeneration of biodiversity, Majete’s success has inspired multiple African governments and the non-profit now manages 22 reserves in 12 countries across the continent, providing employment for more than 5,000 staff.

• How to plan a safari: what you need to know . • 13 of the best safaris in Africa

A hilly landscape of 270 sq m smothered in thick bush and woodland, with extremes of rainfall and temperature, Majete has not been an easy environment or climate to work in. “We come out of Cambodia and go into the Sahara desert,” Adendorff joked. “It changes drastically.”

Although regular tourists can’t track rhino, it is possible to see the endangered animals on game drives or from hides, including a rustic overnight option at Nakamba Hide, which self-drive visitors can book directly through African Parks, although you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bags (one night’s self-catering from £79pp; africanparks.org).

Thawale Lodge

Staying at Thawale Lodge, the unfenced eight-tent camp managed by African Parks, set in the reserve’s core release area known as the Sanctuary, I had plenty of close wildlife encounters. I woke up to impalas and nyalas nibbling fruits from my veranda, ate a healthy lunch of salad and grilled chicken while a herd of elephants slurped at a watering hole just a few feet from my table, and cooled off in the afternoon by dipping my toes in a bio pool swimming with endemic cichlid fish. At £175pp per night full board, including game drives, this is less than half the price of a similar lodge in Kenya or Tanzania, and all profits made here are reinvested into the reserve.

At night, I watched lion shadows slink between the leadwood and ebony trees surrounding the camp and drifted off listening to distant roars. One evening those dreamy apparitions became a startling reality when two brawling male lions crashed into our sundowner at a viewpoint overlooking the Shire River. Standing on a picnic table with only an iPhone torch for defence, I battled the instinct to run and did the only other thing I could think of in that situation — I hid behind someone else (in this case, the tourism manager, Emmanuel Kandiero).

• The new beach-and-bush package that offers half-price safaris

Since their reintroduction to Majete in 2012, lion numbers have soared from seven to over 70, illustrating the challenges of managing an enclosed wildlife area. With 80,000 people living within three miles of the park boundaries at risk of losing crops and livestock to animals, fencing has been a key factor in winning the trust of communities, and crucial to Majete’s success.

It’s a similar situation in Liwonde National Park, also managed by African Parks, a six-hour drive north. Sliced by the Shire, palm-dotted floodplains and mopane woodlands provide a backdrop for reintroduced rhinos, lions and cheetahs.

A cheetah in Malawi

When I arrived, the scene was dynamically different from the predator-free park I’d visited seven years previously, where hippos lazed in the water and impalas gaily bounded across lawns. Yet there were still fewer tourists than I’d expect to find in a prime safari destination.

“Our cats keep us busy,” joked my guide, David Owen, from Mvuu Camp, a waterside lodge with a mixture of 14 upmarket stone or canvas chalets with polished wooden interiors and bright kitenge fabrics framed by swollen baobab trees. At £219pp a night full board, with above-average meals including homemade pizzas and plates piled with fresh vegetables, it’s a relative bargain. Even more affordable is African Parks’s self-catering Chimwala Bush Camp on the other side of the park (easily accessible from a separate gate), with self-catering rates in an en suite tent from £60pp per night. Bring your own food, and two in-house chefs will store and prepare it for you.

There’s nothing cut-price about the safari experience, though. I watched a coalition of five cheetahs fade into a purple sunset, observed lions stalking antelopes, and listened to monitor lizards noisily mating like tree-hammering woodpeckers.

“You can go to the Serengeti and stay in places that make other people wealthy, but in these parks, every last cent you spend goes back into conservation,” Adendorff had said to me. “If more people knew where their money was going and how they were supporting this incredible recovery, Malawi could be one of the top destinations in Africa.”

He’s right. Finding an affordable, crowd-free safari destination is almost as hard as tracking down a black rhino. Sarah Marshall was a guest of Natural World Safaris, which has seven nights’ all-inclusive from £4,600pp, including transfers, conservation and park fees, scheduled shared game-viewing activities and flights (naturalworldsafaris.com)

Your guide to the Milwaukee County Zoo, from free days to events

african lion safari cost

The Milwaukee County Zoo has been a local institution since it started as a small mammal and bird display in Washington Park in 1892 . The zoo moved to its current location at 10001 W. Blue Mound Road in 1958, and it's now the go-to summer destination for tons of families who flock to the playground, ride the train, collect the Mold-o-Rama souvenirs, and, of course, see their favorite animals.

Here's what you should know before you visit.

How much does it cost to get into the Milwaukee zoo?

The Milwaukee County Zoo has a flex pricing structure, with prices fluctuating depending on estimated attendance. That means times that are typically busier — such as weekends or summer months — will have higher ticket prices, whereas ticket prices will likely be cheaper on, for example, weekdays in winter.

For example, for an April zoo visit, prices for an adult general admission ticket range from a low of $11.50 mid-week to a high of $16 on weekends. Current estimates for a June visit (which are subject to change), however, have a similar mid-week low of $11.50, but a high of $19 for a weekend visit.

Prices for each upcoming week (Friday through Thursday) are set every Thursday at 3 p.m., and the zoo recommends buying tickets online ahead of time for the best choice of dates, times and prices. However, tickets purchased ahead of time are only valid for the date printed on the ticket and are nonrefundable.

Guests who need to change the dates of their visit after purchasing advance tickets should email [email protected], although availability on a different day is not guaranteed. And if the new date is more expensive than the original ticket, guests must pay the difference.

Milwaukee zoo free days

The zoo announces several free days periodically throughout the year, including a few select family free days. The zoo has also occasionally hosted Frosty Free Week — free admission during the week between Christmas and New Year's. Here are some days when specific people are offered free admission:

  • Mother's Day: Moms receive free admission
  • Father's Day: Dads receive free admission
  • Senior Safari: Visitors age 60 and older receive free admission on select days in June.
  • Military and Veterans Family Day: Each year, a day is dedicated to all military service members, veterans and their immediate families (10 tickets per family) who receive free admission and parking. Tickets must be obtained through local county Veterans Services offices.

How much does parking cost at the Milwaukee County Zoo?

Parking at the zoo costs $15 per car and can be purchased online or at the zoo's entrance. The zoo's main entrance and walk-in entrance are open year-round. The zoo's west entrance is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and is used to expedite entry for Zoo Pass members and those who buy tickets ahead of time.

The zoo is working through a design and planning process that will result in a revamped parking and ticketing system to ease the congestion that occurs at the main parking lot entrance on busy days.

What is a Zoo Pass, and what benefits are included?

Zoo Passes are available for purchase through the Milwaukee Zoological Society . The annual membership program has several levels. Each level includes free regular admission; free parking; free or discounted admission at select zoos and aquariums across the country ; attraction coupons; discounts at the gift shop; priority registration and discounts for camps, classes and special events; and invitations to members-only events.

  • Individual level starts at $145 and includes benefits for one person, 18 years or older, with upgrade options to add up to two guests.
  • Couple level starts at $160 and includes benefits for two people, 18 years or older, living at the same address.
  • Family level starts at $175 and includes benefits for two adults and their children and grandchildren under 18 years old, with upgrade options to add up to three guests. There are also special family options for single-adult families.
  • Affiliate level starts at $345 and includes benefits for two adults and their children and grandchildren under 18 years old, plus four guests for each visit. Four additional guest passes and a zoo class certificate are also included.
  • Benefactor level starts at $450 and includes benefits for for two adults and their children and grandchildren under 18 years old, plus four guests for each visit. Six additional guest passes, a zoo class certificate and a behind-the-scenes walking tour certificate for six are also included.

Milwaukee County Zoo hours

The zoo's hours differ depending on the time of year. For 2024, the zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through May 24 and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May 25 through September 2. Fall and winter hours have not been announced yet. The final admission is 45 minutes before closing.

The zoo is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

What animals are at the Milwaukee County Zoo?

The zoo's website has a listing of its animals , which, as of April 2024, include more than 2,100 mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, representing 314 species.

Here are the zoo's habitats, along with a few of the types of animals that live in each area:

  • Adventure Africa: giraffes, elephants and hippos
  • African Savanna: gazelles and several bird species
  • African Waterhole: Common Waterbucks and Greater Kudu
  • Aquatic & Reptile Center: lizards, snakes, frogs and starfish
  • Asia/South America: alpaca, tapir and tortoise
  • Camel Yard: tortoise and Bactrian camel
  • Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country: lions, tigers, cheetahs and and leopards
  • Herb and Nada Mahler Family Aviary: several types of birds, including penguins, storks, cranes and peacocks
  • North America: bears, Harbor seals, elk and caribou
  • Northwestern Mutual Family Farm: horses, donkeys, cows and goats
  • Primates of the World: monkeys, orangutans and lemur
  • Small Mammals: bats, porcupines and sloths
  • Stearns Family Apes of Africa: gorillas and bonobos

How long does it take to walk through the Milwaukee County Zoo?

The zoo is large — 190 acres with several different animal habitats to see. If your family wants to see everything, it could easily take a day (or more) to walk through the zoo. But, if the people in your group of four to six people each choose one favorite animal to see, a zoo trip can comfortably be done in three to four hours. Add in a break for lunch, a stop at the wildly popular playground for the kids and a trip on the zoo train, and you have a daylong outing on your hands.

How much does the Zoo train cost, and what other activities are at the Milwaukee County Zoo?

There are several rides and activities at the zoo which require an extra fee. They include:
