Ska and reggae get some folk treatment in an Aggrolites set, and it is just as of the wall as it sounds. I mean that in the best way possible. With such a distinct sound, The Aggrolites have quite clearly mastered their live set and plunder through their back catalogue, finding plenty of gems and delivering them with supreme gusto. Since backing reggae hero Derrick Morgan back in 2002, they have honed their live performance very well, creating feel good vibes in any venue they find themselves in. The band’s debut album title, “Dirty Reggae”, goes a long way to describing their sound, and having toured with the likes of Madness they understand how to take this sound and run with it in front of an audience always grinning from ear to ear. From big hit “Free Time” to earlier singles such as “Don’t Let Me Down”, the group blast their way through a well-oiled set, and it’s clear the band members are enjoying every minute of the performance. The enjoyment is infectious and the crowd feed off the band’s energy to create a feel-good atmosphere that will leave you wanting more. The Aggrolites. Dirty reggae guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

It was a good time. Everyone had a good time. The only problem was that it was too short. I got home at midnight, wishing that they played more.
They didn't but I will go back to see them again. And again and again.

The Aggrolites are more than a band, they are a movement unto themselves. They carry a banner – one created with their own hands. This banner reads Dirty Reggae and represents their signature fusion of reggae, soul, grit and determination. The people come, they relish in the Aggrolites, the dirty reggae and the joy that comes with it all. The liberating rhythms and catchy grooves demand a return trip.
They have shared the stage with Social Distortion, Madness, Rancid, Flogging Molly, 311, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Dropkick Murphys, The Vandals, Against Me!, The Aquabats, Hepcat, The Skatalites, Prince Buster and Derrick Morgan, They have graced the stages at such notable events as Coachella, Vans Warped Tour, SXSW, Bumbershoot, CMJ, Sundance Film Festival, L.A. Reggae Hit Europe – The Aggrolites Interview
Ten years after their first European tour, the famous inventors of Dirty Reggae are coming back once again for a whole month. A lot has changed in the meantime. The Aggrolites have pretty much changed the whole game, their influence on the global Ska scene can hardly be overstated.
But what comes next for the wild bunch from L.A.? With an ever full tour calendar and lots of opportunities for cool side projects, it has become harder to get down together and produce new music. There’s a lot to talk about with Roger Rivas and Jesse Wagner, which we already did at last year’s Summerjam festival in Cologne.
RSS: When you played This Is Ska festival in 2004, people were quite confused, not only because of your sound (organ-driven and with no brass), but also the uniforms (all black jeans and shirts, coming about like skate punks doing Reggae). Today, many bands model their sound around your style. How do you think about that?
Roger Rivas: The bracket that we’re associated with is the Ska Rocksteady Rude Boy Skinhead thing. And so within that scene I notice a change. I think over the years a lot more bands try to play what we started to play, which is what we call Skinhead Reggae, we call it Dirty Reggae. The Liquidator, Upsetter, Jackie Mittoo vibe.
Before us, everyone was playing Ska music and maybe one song a little slower. But now there are bands that are just that style and they have an organ player that plays like this, and they have a singer that tries to sound like Jessie. Which is flattering, it’s really cool. I think it’s a great thing.
Jesse Wagner: We never wanted to pigeonhole our band. Also with the tours we chose to go on. We would take any kind of tour that is outside of the Ska scene. It’s been even eleven years that we have been a band and it is still taking time for people to catch on. But the people that do end up being true fans. The fans that we have are dedicated and die-hard fans.
Which other new Early Reggae bands do you like to listen to?
RR: The Granadians. And I don’t consider them a band that heard The Aggrolites and then decided to play, because they have been around for a long time. I think around the time that The Aggrolites started, there’s a sprinkle of bands around the world that got the same thing: Rocksteady, Skinhead Reggae, organ-based – who moved away from Ska and the horns, and now got a second guitar player.
The Granadians are a really good band, and really good friends of ours, too. Teddy, the keyboard player, moved to the East Coast, he lives in DC now. But they’re a band that I admire. I mean if you look them up on youtube, some of the clips are: Vow!
And you can tell when a musician gets it. Because there are so many musicians that want to play Ska and Rocksteady, or Reggae music, or even Roots Reggae. It’s okay, you can tell when a musician gets it. When they actually listen to it. There’s a big difference of playing in a band and then – when you’re going in your car by yourself – what music do you listen to: Metallica? You can tell the people who really listen to Symarip, to The Upsetters, to all the Pama Records stuff, and The Granadians are one of those bands.
The same thing with us, that’s how I met Jesse. We were like-minded people, listening to this awesome music.
“Reggae hit LA” was the title of your 3 rd album. And it really has. Why is there such a rich scene of excellent bands/artists in LA?
JW: The unique thing about L.A. is that there are many bands that like this old school sound.
RR: We are spoiled.
JW: Maybe it’s because, we’re close to the ocean. I don’t know.
RR: Even before The Aggrolites were together, and he was in a band called The Rhythm Doctors, and I was in a band called The Vessels. Me and him, we were just fans, going to these amazing Ska shows in Los Angeles. We were just very lucky. Hepcat, Jump With Joey, Donkey Show, Let’s Go Bowling, Ocean’s 11. I’m talking about the late 80s, early 90s. It constantly progresses, sometimes in a bigger wave, sometimes not.
JW: Speaking for mine or Roger’s generation: Those were the bands that got us into old-school Reggae. Hopefully we are doing that for young bands now. When they are listening to The Aggrolites, they hopefully start listening to what The Aggrolites are listening to.
It definitely worked like that for the European scene. There was a wave with The Slackers, Hepcat and Stubborn Allstars, that was when European bands started sounding original. It was basically you that brought the whole Boss Reggae movement along.
RR: It’s very flattering. Like I said, I think it changes. What’s the next thing. There’s gonna be a next thing. For example all of a sudden a very awesome Calypso band … ?
What will be the next thing for The Aggrolites? The last album “Rugged Road” was a more mellow thing. It sounded like five singles with five b-sides …
RR: That’s exactly what it was. In eleven years we only released one 45. And people who listen to our style of music, are definitely vinyl collectors. So we wanted to do that. We wanted to press 45s. We made five 45s, and each one was inspired by old school Reggae stuff. One would be inspired by The Pioneers “Complicated Girl”, one sounds like Junior Murvin I think. If you know you know. That’s why it’s mostly instrumentals. Boris Gardener had a lot to do with those, too.
Some of your music has been adapted in TV shows. Is that segment becoming more important for you?
RR: It happens naturally.
JW: It’s not something that you focus on or are going for. Every now and then a band will get lucky and we got these chances or opportunities. That way we can put our music in big movies.
Or the “Banana” song.
JW: Like this “Banana” thing. We went on a tour with a band called Aquabats. And the creator of that show was the lead singer of the Aquabats. And the “Banana Song” is an old Skinhead Reggae song. We never thought of it as a children’s song. Honestly.
RR: Actually the original song is very un-children. It’s slackness. And then we switched it around to something else.
JW: It’s a calypso song, like the “Big Bamboo.”
RR: We all know what the banana means in that song. And then we switched it up.
JW: He said: “I’m doing this kids show. I can’t really talk much about it. But it has this “Banana Song”. And I said: “I don’t know. That’s not really what we are into. He said: “No, it will work great. You just have to change a couple of lyrics.” And it’s a huge hit.
I feel like The Aggrolites are more known for the “Banana Song” than for anything. And I think that’s cool, because it’s a great television show. And it’s family friendly and on top of that it’s exposing great Skinhead Reggae music to the world.
RR: And Mr Roy Ellis is very happy with it (laughs).
JW: He’s more happy than we are about it.
RR: The publishing and the royalties go to him.
JW: And we just play it.
Are there any dates out when something new by The Aggrolites will be released.
JW: Like Roger said: We’ve been touring 200 days a year. As fun as it is, its also very, very exhausting. When you go home, you pretty much hibernate. You spend time with your family. Or you just hide in your room: “Oh peace, quiet.”
RR: No more alcohol, no more Doner kebaps. On a serious note: It’s really been since 2008 that we recorded a full length album. We definitely have a lot demo songs. Songs that we have been writing the last couple of years. Songs that we’ll revisit. And songs that we will be writing at home. We’ll get in the studio, record and get the album out as soon as we can, but there are no set dates.
As fans, we always find it better for bands to take their time than to rush.
RR: That’s what we are trying to do. At the risk of sounding boastful and cocky. We can easily spend two or three days to write 15 songs …
JW: we done that a lot of times …
RR: Me and him would write a bunch of songs and we’ll record them and the fans will like it, because it sounds like The Aggrolites. But we want more than that. All of our past albums were good, but think we can reach a better bar. And that goes with nurturing, taking time for songwriting, and how the recording sounds. With The early Aggrolites everything wasn’t professional. We were a bunch of kids: “Let’s have fun with it.” Now we’re at a point when people actually like what we are doing. And we think: “Whatever we put out they’re gonna listen to it. A little of pressure. We want to do the fans justice like Jesse said. And put out a great product.

I managed to catch The Aggrolites in Harlow and I’m so glad I did because I didn’t manage to attend the London gig. The support was from Essex ska act New Town Kings who, once again, played an outstanding set, I strongly suggest catching them as they smashed this gig and the support to the Slackers earlier in the year. The Aggrolites are an amazing act, as the godfathers of dirty reggae they don’t disappoint. We had a great position right next to the keyboard player Roger Rivas, I could have watched that for hours! quite amazing sounds that transfixed both the eyes and ears. Jesse commands the stage, inviting response from the audience, with his rust coated vocals but the whole band are great fun to watch. They produced a few covers and plenty of expected tracks, with Free Time called out heavily by the audience. It was a fabulous gig, over far too quickly, we all wanted more, and their set list suggested we’d get an encore. Unfortunatly it wasn’t to be, but there’s nothing better than the taste for more!

This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches
Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.
Xurxo Lobato/Getty Images
Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.
A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential.
The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.
"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."
The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport.
Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm.
Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .
And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.
You can see the full ranking at internationaliving.com .

The Norwegian musician born Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll first introduced himself in 2013 and quietly became one of the most ubiquitous hitmakers in the world. Amassing over 23 billion cumulative global audio and video streams, he has broken numerous streaming records. Kygo earned one of his biggest hits with the multiplatinum “It Ain’t Me” (feat. Selena Gomez), going Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and clocking over 2.9 billion streams worldwide. In 2019, Kygo unleashed “Higher Love” with Whitney Houston and generated another 1.4 billion combined streams/views worldwide and peaked at #1 on Dance Radio, in addition to leaving his imprint on a classic.
He heralded his 2020 critically acclaimed third full-length album Golden Hour [Sony Music International/Ultra Records/RCA Records] with the anthems “Like It Is” (feat. Zara Larsson & Tyga), “Lose Somebody” (with OneRepublic), and “I’ll Wait” (feat. Sasha Alex Sloan). The album has garnered over 2.6 billion streams worldwide. Following Golden Hour , Kygo released his remix of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” and Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” to rave reviews. In 2022, after headlining Lollapalooza and Life Is Beautiful, along with sold-out headlining shows at Madison Square Garden and Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadion, Kygo surprised fans with the release of his fourth album Thrill Of The Chase [RCA Records]. The album featured notable singles including “Dancing Feet” (feat. DNCE), “Woke Up In Love” (with Gryffin feat. Calum Scott), and “Never Really Loved Me” (feat. Dean Lewis), amassing over 1 billion streams worldwide and debuting in the Top 5 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart. Was the travel worth it? Beyoncé and Taylor Swift's summer concerts drew fans from afar
To determine the most affordable Eras Tour stops, Islands.com researchers compared the cost of a two-night trip, including one cheap ticket on StubHub.com, two nights at a four-star hotel, six inexpensive meals, two five-mile taxi rides, and one domestic beer. However, researchers didn’t account for airline tickets or concert merchandise.
With safety at the top of travelers' minds, the researchers also factored in the city’s safety rating out of 100.

We are just two weeks away from Taylor Swift hitting the road again for a summer swing of European Eras Tour shows. And, as you may have heard, since the last time she played an Eras show Swift has dropped her fastest-selling album of all-time, The Tortured Poets Department , a sprawling, 31-track collection that has been racking up record after record in its first week.

While Swift has not commented, on Thursday night (April 25) Swift uploaded a 15-second YouTube Shorts clip in which it appeared that TTPD has, indeed, been slipped into rotation. Cued to the album’s first single, the Post Malone-featuring “ Fortnight ,” it finds Swift singing, dancing and playing piano in what look like Lover and Folklore set-ups, one quick-cut caught a lot of attention. In a brief shot, Swift is seen standing next to a silver railing that eagle-eyed fans quickly surmised was in the shape of the TTPD logo. There was no chill about this news.
“GUYS THE RAILING LITERALLY SAYS TTPD!?!;);$!; ITS THE TTPD LOGO WE’RE GETTING TTPD AT THE ERAS TOUR,” tweeted one Swiftie. Another pointed out that Swift appeared to be wearing the same shoes from the “Fortnight” video in the rehearsal clip and another proved that there is no one in the game better at the long game than Taylor.
“tHIS is what she means when she says she plans easter eggs far in advance. AHHHHH!!!!,” they wrote, noting that another Swiftie spotted that Swift had seemingly teased this new era before the tour even began when she posted an image of a box containing all her different-colored Eras microphones, including a white one that “hasn’t had a place in the show… until now!!!” It was hard to tell if Swift was wielding this white mic in the video because the clip is in grayscale, but that didn’t stop the breathless speculation about what’s next on the singer’s stadium-packing outing.
Check out the Shorts clip and the Easter egg hunt below.
