England face stacked schedule as Future Tours Programme confirmed for 2023-2027

England's packed schedule includes a one-off Test against Ireland ahead of next summer's home Ashes series - which will run between mid-June and the end of July

englandftp17082201

The Future Tours Programme for 2023 to 2027 has been confirmed.

England's packed schedule includes a one-off Test against Ireland ahead of next summer's home Ashes series - which will run between mid-June and the end of July, a five-match series in India in early 2024, and visits from West Indies and Sri Lanka in the Test arena in the home summer of 2024.

The whole of August is kept free from England fixtures to accommodate The Hundred in each of 2023 and 2024, though there are games against Ireland and Pakistan which creep into the schedule in 2025 and 2026 respectively.

The next Ashes campaign down under will take place in 2025-26, while the red-ball side's 2026-27 winter will be spent in South Africa and Bangladesh.

Five T20s against Pakistan kick off the 2024 summer, while Australia visit in September for five ODIs and three T20s.

Ireland, West Indies and South Africa make up the limited-overs opponents in the summer of 2025, and there is a white-ball trip to New Zealand before the Ashes series.

An ODI tri series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka is scheduled for October 2026.

Men's FTP for 2023-2027 announced

The International Cricket Council today released the Men’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) 2023-27, confirming the international calendar for all Full Members across all three formats of the game.

The FTP, which includes matches in the next two cycles of the nine-team ICC World Test Championship (WTC), sees an increase in number of matches across all three formats compared to the previous cycle that ran from 2019-23.

The FTP is the result of a collective effort of Members with ICC’s support and is designed to provide clarity around the calendar. Each Member’s FTP is based on collective bilateral and mutual agreements and may vary in accordance with each Member’s overall cricketing and commercial programs. The 2023-27 FTP has over 770 matches.

In addition to bilateral cricket, this four-year cycle will witness a single edition each of the Men’s Cricket World Cup and Champions Trophy, and two editions each of the Men’s T20 World Cups and WTC finals.

Australia, England and India all play five-match Test series as part of the third and fourth editions of the WTC, which also comprises 19 two-match series and five three-match series each in the two editions of the Championship that run from 2023-25 and 2025-27.

Test teams outside the WTC have also scheduled a substantial number of bilateral Test matches in an effort to boost playing opportunities in cricket’s traditional multi-day format.

The first ever women’s FTP was announced on Tuesday, which will see over 300 matches played during the 2022-25 period. The media release issued on the Women’s FTP is available here .

ICC GM of Cricket Wasim Khan said: “I’d like to thank our Members for the effort that has gone into creating this FTP for the next four years. We are incredibly lucky to have three vibrant formats of the game, with an outstanding programme of ICC global events and strong bilateral and domestic cricket and this FTP is designed to allow all cricket to flourish.

“The landscape around the game is continuing to evolve and we will work closely with Members as we collectively adapt to that. We are committed to growing the game and giving more fans more opportunities to enjoy cricket, but are very mindful of the need to balance that ambition with the welfare of players.”

The exact dates and venues of matches outside of ICC events is for the Members to announce in due course.

  • The Men’s FTP is available here
  • Complete matchups of the WTC 2023-25 and 2025-27 available here

England fans face minimum five-year wait for West Indies Test tour

  • Draft tours programme seen by the Guardian
  • No Test tour would be huge financial blow for region

England are poised to deliver a crushing blow to West Indies cricket and their own travelling supporters with no men’s Test tour of the Caribbean scheduled for at least the next five years.

According to a draft of the future tours programme for the period May 2023 to February 2027 – seen by the Guardian and due to be finalised at the ICC’s AGM in Birmingham this month – the England men’s team are scheduled to play just eight white-ball fixtures in the Caribbean during this time.

These come in a single tour early in the cycle – straight after the 50-over World Cup in India next year and thus likely to involve a weakened squad – with England’s only other visit thereafter being the T20 World Cup in 2024. It leaves a minimum five-year gap between Test tours of the Caribbean for England after their 1-0 series defeat in March .

This is likely to dismay the hordes of England supporters who flock to the region for the trip of a lifetime – around 10,000 were present in Barbados this year, with about 3,000 for the Tests in Antigua and Grenada – and the financial knock-on effect to Cricket West Indies will be significant.

England Test tours are worth at least $10m (£8.4m) to CWI (nearly double when combined with limited‑overs cricket). There is also a larger impact, with recent visits to have featured both Test and white‑ball cricket estimated to have been worth up to $100m to the region’s economy.

While bilateral internationals can be loss-makers for West Indies, England tours remain a significant revenue source for CWI in a global cricket economy that is skewed heavily against such a high-cost, low-income part of the world. West Indies have more than proved their strength as opponents too, with England registering just one Test series win in the Caribbean since 1968.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has pointed to a World Test Championship draw that was out of its control. But given its seat at the ICC top table, three non-WTC series versus New Zealand since 2019 (including one next winter) and seven fewer England men’s Tests than their 49 during the last cycle, it still appears a cold-shouldering of CWI after good relations in recent times.

West Indies sent men’s and women’s teams to the UK during the height of the pandemic in 2020, helping to prevent the ECB from suffering catastrophic losses. Though this led to an expansion of England’s return visit earlier this year – a two-Test series became three and three T20s became five – these favours were not exactly equal.

The next instalment of the future tours programme is one in which England, India and Australia look generally to maximise their lucrative encounters – all three nations play five-match Test series home and away against each other – but squeezes bilateral international cricket and boasts annual ICC tournaments.

A two-and-a-half-month window has been carved out for the expanded Indian Premier League and other boards are also looking to free up space so big-name players can feature in their franchise tournaments, including the Big Bash League and the Hundred. The Ashes in England next year, for example, will be over by the end of July.

England’s overseas men’s Test tours during this period include a five-match series in India in early 2024, three apiece in New Zealand and Pakistan later that year, a five-match away Ashes series in 2025-26, and three Tests in South Africa in 2026-27. The sole Test series against West Indies is three matches scheduled for the 2024 home summer.

Sixes soar in a record chase at the Eden Gardens

england men's cricket tours 2023

Stats highlights from Punjab Kings' historic heist at the Eden Gardens.

262 is the highest successfully chased target in a T20 game. Punjab Kings surpassed the 259 chased down by South Africa against West Indies in Centurion. The previous highest successfully chased score in the IPL was 224 by Rajasthan Royals, who chased that total on two separate instances - against Punjab Kings in Sharjah in 2020 and against KKR in Kolkata earlier this year.

Highest successful chases in T20s

523 The aggregate of 523 runs by the two teams combined is the joint second-most in a T20 game, only second to the 549 runs between SRH and RCB in Bengaluru earlier in the season. This was the third instance of 500+ runs aggregate in an IPL match, all three coming in this IPL 2024 edition.

Highest aggregate in a T20 match

7 250+ scores in IPL 2024 - the most ever in a single T20 series or tournament. There were only two such scores in the first 16 years of the IPL. The 2022 and 2023 seasons of England's T20 Blast saw three 250+ scores each.

42 sixes hit in this match is the most ever in a T20 game, surpassing the 38 struck in the SRH vs MI game in Hyderabad as well as the SRH vs RCB game in Bengaluru, both in IPL 2024. 24 maximums by Punjab Kings is the second-most in an innings by a team, behind Nepal's 26 hits over the ropes against Mongolia in Hangzhou in the Asian Games last year. The previous IPL record for sixes hit in an innings was 22 by SRH, who did it twice this season - against RCB in Bengaluru and against DC in Delhi.

Most sixes in a T20

400 runs scored in boundaries in the match: KKR scored 196 (22 X 4s & 18 X 6s) and Punjab Kings 204 (15 X 4s & 24 X 6s) - the joint-most in a T20 match. The RCB vs SRH contest in Bengaluru earlier in the season also had as many boundary runs (43 X 4s & 38 X 6s).

PBKS' chase witnessed three 75+ partnerships - a first in T20 cricket.

15.16 the economy rate for seamers in the match - the worst ever in an IPL game. Between the two sides, seamers bowled 23.4 overs and conceded 359 runs for four wickets. Among those who bowled at least one over of seam, the only bowler with a sub-15 economy rate was Arshdep Singh (11.25). The previous worst rate of runs leaked by seamers in an IPL match was 14.06 in the match between SRH and RCB in Bengaluru in 2024 (7/422 in 30 overs).

1 This was the first instance of all four openers scoring 50+ in the same IPL match and the 11th such instance in all T20 cricket. The four openers cumulatively hit 24 maximums between them - the joint-most by openers in a T20 contest, alongside the 24 struck in a contest between China and Japan in Mong Kok in 2024.

93/1 by Punjab Kings is the fourth highest Powerplay score in IPL and the highest ever for the team surpassing the previous best of 86/1 against SRH in Hyderabad ten years ago in IPL 2014. The aggregate of 169 runs in Powerplay by both sides combined is the third-most in an IPL game, behind 213 between SRH and DC in Delhi last Saturday and 170 between Punjab Kings and CSK at the Wankhede Stadium in IPL 2014.

3 Partnerships of 75+ in Punjab Kings innings: 93 off 36 between Prabhsimran & Bairstow, 85 off 39 between Bairstow & Rossouw and 84* off 37 between Bairstow & Shashank. It is the first such instance in T20 cricket.

Indian men begin Thomas Cup title defence, women look to shine in Uber Cup

Lakshya Sen

  • India begin their Thomas and Uber Cup campaign on 27 April
  • Indian men's team have a tough group stage
  • India men's team is the defending their title

Star singles players will aim for a consistent run as Indian men embark on a tough journey of defending their title at the Thomas Cup, while a young women's team, sans the peerless P V Sindhu, will look to punch above its weight when it begins its campaign in Uber Cup here on Saturday.

Just two years ago, India had sent shockwaves across the badminton world when they clinched their maiden Thomas Cup crown, considered the team world championship for men.

Without the burden of expectations, India went on to dismantle the world's best teams to script an unprecedented chapter in the history of the sport, and now they return to the 33rd edition with the arduous task of once again showing their might against the top echelons of the sport.

However, the underdog tag won't be there this time. In fact, all the teams will be gunning for the defending champions, who have retained the core of the 2022 side which had made history in Bangkok.

India will count on the experience of last edition as they have been put in the 'Group of Death', featuring multiple-time winners Indonesia, Thailand and England in Group C.

Indian men will begin their campaign against Thailand, who boost of reigning world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn and young Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul.

But the most formidable will be third-seeded Indonesia, who have the likes of Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting -- the two played the finals of All England in March --, and world No. 7 pair of Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian.

"It will be tough this year. Based on current form, there are lots of teams with three strong singles and two doubles (players) like China, Denmark, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and Indonesia," HS Prannoy told PTI.

A lot can happen in two years' time and none of the Indian players coming to China this week are the same.

Prannoy, who had delivered the goods under pressure in the deciding fifth singles, is coming into the tournament after struggling in the first half of the season, owing to a chronic stomach disorder which returned after troubling him in the past.

His 90-minute marathon battle en route to a morale-boosting win over China's Lu Guang Zu, however, showed he is close to recovery and will carry the onus of giving the team a good start as he is the top-ranked singles player at world No. 9 now.

Lakshya Sen has found his mojo just in time with successive semifinal finishes at the French Open and the All England Championships after enduring a difficult 2023 and early 2024.

Kidambi Srikanth, who had won all six matches in 2022, has blown hot and cold in the last two years. He also endured tough losses in the team championships final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Asian Games.

Another player who could be entrusted with the third singles is young Priyanshu Rajawat, who was part the team which won the epic title in Bangkok, and since then has gone on to claim his maiden Super 300 title last year in Orleans.

While the rest had an inconsistent run, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have looked unstoppable and are coming into the prestigious event with four straight finals on the World Tour. The duo will be the spearhead of India's campaign.

Dhruv Kapila and Arjun MR, who will play the second doubles, have weaved a few title wins at the Uganda International Challenge and Orlen Polish Open, besides signing off with a quarterfinal finish at the Spain Masters in March.

"As a team we have evolved in the last 2-3 years. Everybody has been able to keep aside their individual problems for a one-week time and has been able to push through emotional challenges in a much better way during the team events," Prannoy said.

It is likely that Prannoy and Srikanth could be rotated during the event, putting the onus more on Sen and Rajawat to deliver. There is also Kiran George, who has been in decent touch.

In Uber Cup, Ashmita Chaliha will lead a young Indian team with all the big guns skipping the tournament after competing in a series of tournaments to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The greenhorns will look to test their mental and physical fortitude against the top international players when they open their campaign against Canada in Group A.

Top seeds and multiple-time winners China and Singapore are also in their group, making it improbable for the young women's team to go past the group stage.

Besides Ashmita, national champion Anmol Kharb, who was the star performer for India en route their maiden Asia Team Championships title, will also look to test their wares as will Isharani Baruah and 15-year-old Tanvi Sharma.
