By Air, Land and Sea, Travel is Electrifying

By Zach Wichter

  • July 17, 2019

The roar of a jet engine, the vroom of a car, the vibration of a moving ship.

These sounds and sensations, commonly associated with travel and motion, share a common source: fossil fuel-powered engines.

But as regulators and businesses around the world try to reduce carbon emissions, airplanes, automobiles and ships are going electric. It’s good for the environment, but it also means travel itself may be changing. Here’s a look at a few of the initiatives that are underway.

air sea land travel

Starting later this year, Hawaii’s Mokulele Airlines and its partner Ampaire, a California-based electric airplane startup, will begin testing a hybrid aircraft over Maui on the commuter route between the Kahului and Hana airports.

The flying public won’t be able to buy tickets for those early test flights, but the companies behind the tests say it’s an important step in proving that electric service is viable.

“You uncover a lot of gremlins when you start flying in a true operational cadence,” said Kevin Noertker, Ampaire’s co-founder and chief executive. He added that the current plan is to introduce commercial hybrid service by the end of 2021.

The planes have a range of around 200 miles, but because they are hybrids, test pilots don’t need to worry if their batteries run out of juice midair.

“We’ve designed the system with resilience in mind,” Mr. Noertker said.

Hybrid and fully-electric airplanes can also have lower operating and maintenance costs than traditional fossil-fuel-driven aircraft, because they use less fuel and have fewer moving parts. Those savings may ultimately be passed on to passengers. They also mean that more rural airports could one day see commercial service as the economics of flying to low-population destinations improve.

“Scheduled air service can come back to communities that have lost it in all the consolidation with the airlines,” said Rob McKinney, the president of Pacific operations for Southern Airways Express, which operates as Mokulele Airlines. “Rural communities will have air service again that haven’t had it in 20 or 30 years.”

Nevada has been undergoing a yearslong project to build out its electric vehicle charging infrastructure. It has deemed a stretch of U.S. 95 (the primary route between Las Vegas and Reno, not to be confused with Interstate 95 on the East Coast), along with portions of other major roadways in the state the “Electric Highway,” and is encouraging visitors to see the state by taking an emission-free road trip. Nevada is also home to the Tesla Gigafactory, which in some ways jump-started its electric vehicle efforts.

“We have so many cultural and historical sites that people are interested in and we promote the state through the road trip,” said Chris Moran, a public relations specialist at Travel Nevada . “It’s great to do it in a sustainable and respectful way to the environment.”

In some ways the new technology also allows people to travel in a more old-fashioned style. Because charging takes longer than filling up a gas tank, it means electric vehicle drivers are more likely to spend time and money in small communities along their route.

“If you think of what the interstate highway system is, how it so dramatically changed the nature of road travel and road trip tourism, this is a different way to travel and see places,” said David Bobzien from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy. “We have a lot of car enthusiasts who love their electric vehicles and they love to drive them, so it’s the road trip and the joy of the road trip that lures them to use the highway.”

Similar infrastructure can be found in many places in the Northeast as well, with Tesla charging stations along the Interstate 91 and 95 corridors.

Hamlet Aguilar relies on those stations as the anchor for his new business, Bound . The car-service, which began earlier this year, shuttles passengers between New York and Boston in Teslas for prices that begin at $99 each way.

“The electric cars allow us to provide a price point that the other transportation companies cannot do,” Mr. Aguilar said. “The high cost of maintaining a fleet and the gas, it was never cost effective. Being able to use these Teslas enables us to offer a very attractive price point.”

Water and electricity are finally beginning to mix.

Hurtigruten , a Norway-based expedition cruise company, is investing heavily in sustainably powered ships. The company focuses on exploration cruises, with its ships traveling places far from the Caribbean and Mediterranean destinations that most cruise passengers visit.

“This is something that has been a natural part of the development of the company and driven by a lot of very engaged people,” said Daniel Skjeldam, Hurtigruten’s chief executive. “One of the reasons they have been so proactive on it, since we’ve been sailing in these areas, they’ve been seeing the changes” like glaciers retreating, firsthand.

The company’s efforts include investing in an all-new hybrid-powered cruise ship, which will launch in September. That Alaskan cruise is already sold out.

In the next few years, the company will also convert its older diesel-burning ships to liquid natural gas and biogas-fueled hybrids (biogas is made from organic waste), and will launch a battery-powered hybrid catamaran for expeditions near the Norwegian coast later this year, with more coming into service in 2020. The company is working to develop solar chargers for those vessels.

None of these first-generation ships will be fully electric, but Mr. Skjeldam predicts that in the not-too-distant future, some vessels will be able to sail entirely under battery power for hours at a time.

He also said he thinks his company isn’t too far ahead of industry trends.

“I think we’ll see, to be honest, a revolution on sustainable travel in the next decade. I think a lot more ports worldwide will be much more demanding to the industry on what kind of ships they will accept into ports. The local emissions from a cruise ship are huge if they’re running on heavy fuel oil,” he said, adding that Norway will require ships in its Unesco-designated heritage fjords to be emission-free by 2026.

He admits though, that battery-powered vessels are still technologically limited.

“We don’t think batteries can be the only source for power, but it’s the perfect way to operate ships into sensitive areas.”

Elisabeth Goodridge contributed reporting.

NASA Selects New Aircraft-Driven Studies of Earth and Climate Change

This 2024 Earth Day poster is an ocean themed vertical 15x30 illustration created from NASA satellite cloud imagery overlaid on ocean data. The white cloud imagery wraps around shapes, defining three whales and a school of fish. Swirly cloud patterns, called Von Kármán Vortices, create the feeling of movement in the composition. The focal point is a cyclone in the upper third of the poster. At the center flies the recently launched PACE satellite. The ocean imagery – composed of blues, aquas, and greens – is filled with subtle color changes and undulating patterns created by churning sediment, organic matter and phytoplankton.

This Earth Day, join us in person and online to learn how NASA studies the ocean from space. Explore the complex connections between sea, air, land, and climate through a mix of in-person and virtual activities, talks, and trivia.

air sea land travel

For nearly five decades, the agency and its partners have collected data across all of the world’s ocean basins with satellites, airplane-mounted instruments, and space shuttles and stations.

On April 11, NASA released the first images from the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite, which was launched on Feb. 8, 2024, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. PACE joined the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite and Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich in helping NASA revolutionize our understanding of our oceans. You can see one of the images below, in which bright pink and green colors indicate different communities of phytoplankton.

NASA’s PACE satellite’s Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) detects light across a hyperspectral range, which gives scientists new information to differentiate communities of phytoplankton – a unique ability of NASA’s newest Earth-observing satellite. This first image released from OCI identifies two different communities of these microscopic marine organisms in the ocean off the coast of South Africa on Feb. 28, 2024. The central panel of this image shows Synechococcus in pink and picoeukaryotes in green. The left panel of this image shows a natural color view of the ocean, and the right panel displays the concentration of chlorophyll-a, a photosynthetic pigment used to identify the presence of phytoplankton.

Discover more about PACE and NASA’s Earth-observing fleet during an in-person celebration. The event will be hosted at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on April 18 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. The event will include:

  • More than a dozen hands-on Earth science activities, such as a 3D glacier puzzle and natural hazards trivia
  • Instructions for creating animated GIFs using NASA Earth science imagery
  • Opportunities to engage with the Earth Information Center, which offers data-rich visualizations and immersive experiences that show how our planet is changing.
  • Two new stories that will screen on the Earth Information Center’s Hyperwall. One highlights how local African communities use NASA Earth science data in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute to monitor forest habitat for chimpanzees and agricultural land use over time. The other explores how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency monitors methane emissions from landfills with NASA remote-sensing data.

Online, explore how NASA works to understand our oceans at a global scale. Visit science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-day/ for dozens of resources, including:

  • Downloadable guides for creating ocean currents in a test tube and a flip book showing how rivers change over time
  • Activities that show the importance of water on our planet and how researchers study our oceans and waterways

NASA’s in-person and virtual Earth Day events are free and open to the public.

You can also celebrate Earth Day as a NASA citizen scientist. Play the NeMO-Net iPad game to help NASA classify coral reefs, or download the GLOBE Observer app to help monitor clouds, water, and plants in your area. NASA’s citizen science projects have led to thousands of observations and several discoveries, with more than 410 NASA citizen scientists named as co-authors on peer-reviewed scientific publications. NASA citizen science is open to everyone around the world, not just U.S. residents.

NASA’s innovative tools and data inform decision-makers around the world as they monitor our changing climate and work to address environmental challenges. NASA partners with state and local governments, international space agencies, and federal agencies including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). NASA is committed to making data accessible, inclusive, and transparent for everyone — an approach known as “open science.”

The Key Differences Between A Passport Card & A Passport Book

  • Choose a passport card if you frequently travel by land and sea within Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
  • Passport cards are cheaper than a passport book.
  • Get both a passport book and a card if you travel by air and land equally.

The US passport book, expressly designed for international travel, accommodates air, sea, or land journeys. This compact, easily portable booklet starts with a page dedicated to the traveler's personal details, such as name, date of birth, and photograph.

Pages are allocated for immigration stamps and visas, which serve as official entry and exit records from different countries. Modern versions of the passport book include an electronic chip to enhance security and facilitate quick processing at borders. This chip contains a digital replica of the information displayed on the personal details page.

The US also offers a passport card for individuals who primarily travel by land or sea to nearby countries, such as Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. This wallet-sized card is a convenient, more compact alternative to the traditional passport book. It's important to note that the passport card cannot be used for air travel; it is specifically designed for land and sea travel.

Both the passport book and the passport card have a validity period of ten years for adults, ensuring travelers can use their documents for numerous trips, making international travel smooth and efficient. Additionally, choosing between a passport book and a passport card—or to obtain both—allows travelers to select the document that best suits their travel needs, preferences, and habits.

5 Exotic Destinations Americans Can Fly To Without A Passport

Which passport should you get: book or card.

Consider your travel habits when deciding between a passport book and a passport card . If you frequently travel by air or have plans to visit countries beyond Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, a passport book is preferable. However, a passport card might be sufficient for your needs if you primarily travel by land or sea to nearby destinations.

Passport books are more expensive than cards. First-time applicants must pay an application fee and an acceptance fee. The acceptance fee goes to the facility that takes your application, and the application fee goes to the US Department of State.

Passport book cost for first-time applicants

  • For adults (16 and older): $165
  • For children (15 and under): $135

Passport card cost for first-time applicants

  • For adults (16 and older): $65
  • For children (15 and under): $50

Acceptance fees are dropped for renewal of both the passport book and card. Travelers can expect to pay $130 to renew an adult passport book and just $30 to renew an adult passport card.

When to get both a passport book and passport card

The passport book is the all-encompassing identifier to carry regardless of where you travel. Having both passport types might be convenient, like if you travel equally by air and land. If you’re visiting Canada or Mexico by car, you might prefer a more compact document for traveling across the border. A passport card for regular land-based trips would be helpful.

Validity and renewal

Both documents are valid for ten years for adults and five years for children. If you already have a passport, you may be eligible to renew it . You can also correct incorrect information or report your lost or stolen passport . The routine processing time for a passport is six to eight weeks.

You can expedite the process, which takes two to three weeks and costs an extra $60. It is essential to consider the time to get a passport when booking travel. It may take up to two weeks for applications to arrive at a passport agency or center, and it may take up to two weeks for you to receive a completed passport after printing.

Requirements for renewing your passport

  • Your passport is not damaged.
  • You have never reported your passport lost or stolen
  • It was issued within the last 15 years.
  • It was issued when you were 16 years or older.
  • It was published under your current name.

Renew by mail

  • Confirm you meet the requirements
  • Fill out your renewal form online
  • Submit your most recent passport
  • Provide a photo
  • Calculate fees
  • Submit application
  • Enroll in email updates for tracking details

Using a passport card for domestic travel:

On May 7, 2025, US travelers must have a REAL ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. US passport books and cards are valid forms of ID for domestic air travel, but the card is more convenient to carry. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts the passport card as ID for domestic flights in the United States.

Department Of Homeland Security Extends REAL ID Deadline Another Two Years

When deciding on the best option for your travel documentation, consider the nature of your travel. A passport book is likely the most versatile and universally accepted form of identification and travel document. On the other hand, a passport card could be a more convenient and cost-effective choice if your travels mainly involve crossing borders by land or sea, especially to destinations like Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. The passport card is smaller and easier to carry for day trips or frequent land and sea crossings, but it's important to note that it cannot be used for international air travel.

Middle East latest: Rockets fired towards US military base in Syria

At least five rockets have been launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar towards a US military base in northeastern Syria, security sources tell Reuters. The attack against American forces is the first since February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq stopped targeting US troops.

Doctors have told the Sky News team in Gaza how they saved the life of an unborn baby even as her mother was dying from head injuries inflicted during devastating Israeli airstrikes in Rafah.

The baby's mother Sabreen, her father Shoukri and three-year-old sister Malak all died in an Israeli airstrike over the weekend.

Her uncle says he will care for her now.

Watch the short report here...

Gideon Falter, the campaigner at the centre of an antisemitism row with the Met Police, has slammed comments by a former senior officer - who said he may have arrested him for assault.

It comes after Mr Falter was threatened with arrest yards away from a pro-Palestine protest, where an officer described him as "openly Jewish" and said his presence was "antagonising demonstrators".

The force apologised but then had to apologise for their apology after suggesting opponents of pro-Palestinian marches "must know that their presence is provocative".

But former Met Chief Superintendent Dal Babu said the full 13-minute video of the incident shows a "different encounter" to the one Mr Falter had described.

Mr Babu said if he had been policing the march he would have considered arresting the antisemitism campaigner for "assault on a police officer and a breach of the peace".

Gideon Falter speaks to Sky News

Mr Falter responded: "I did not assault a police officer. How on Earth can anybody say that? I'm quite clearly in the video trying to continue to walk where I was going."

He added: "I think it's a pretty outrageous thing to say, I think it's a pretty outrageous thing to be giving any credence to.

"I was Jewish. I was crossing the street."

Mr Babu later reaffirmed his view of the encounter and said the video shows Mr Falter pushing policing officers "out of the way", which amounts to "common assault".

We understand Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley is meeting the home secretary today and policing minister this week to discuss antisemitism.

Mr Falter has called for Sir Mark to step down.

The Palestinian civil defence claims it has uncovered 210 bodies from a temporary burial ground inside a hospital previously besieged and raided by Israeli forces in Gaza.

After Israel's military withdrew from the southern city of Khan Younis earlier this month, residents have been returning to the site at Nasser hospital looking for the bodies of their loved ones.

A burial area was built in the hospital when Israeli forces were besieging the facility last month, with people unable to bury the dead in a cemetery at the time, the defence group says.

At the time, people were not able to bury the dead in a cemetery and dug graves in the hospital yard.

In a statement, the department said a total of 210 bodies have been recovered from the hospital yard since Friday.

Some of those bodies were of people killed during the hospital siege, while others were killed when Israeli forces raided the hospital last month, the civil defence claims.

Relatives are looking to rebury the bodies in permanent graves elsewhere.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has given 1,500 body bags and protective gear to the civil defence to help dig up the site and move the bodies, it said.

Israeli troops advanced into Khan Younis in December, as part of its brutal ground offensive in response to Hamas's 7 October attacks in southern Israel.

At least 34,151 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's offensive on Gaza since 7 October, the enclave's Hamas-run health ministry claims.

The ministry also reports 77,084 have been wounded.

It also claims 54 people have been killed over the past 24 hours, with hospitals receiving another 104 injured.

The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its reports, but says most of those killed are women and children.

Iran's foreign ministry says nuclear weapons have "no place" in the country's "doctrine".

A Revolutionary Guards commander had warned Tehran might change its nuclear policy if pressured by Israeli threats, but ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani appeared to row back on the remarks today.

"Iran has repeatedly said its nuclear programme only serves peaceful purposes," he said.

"Nuclear weapons have no place in our nuclear doctrine."

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the last say on Tehran's nuclear programme, banned the development of nuclear weapons in a fatwa, or religious decree, in the early 2000s.

Iraqi armed faction Kata'ib Hezbollah has denied saying it had resumed attacks on US forces.

The group's denial comes hours after another statement was circulated on Telegram channels thought to be affiliated with them.

That statement declared attacks had resumed three months after they were suspended - but the group now says that is "fabricated news".

Earlier, sources had told the Reuters news agency at least five rockets were launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar towards a US military base in northeastern Syria.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, referred to it as a "failed rocket attack".

Two security sources and a senior army officer in Iraq said a small truck with a rocket launcher fixed on the back had been parked in Zummar, which is on the border with Syria.

Kata'ib Hezbollah, an Iraq-based militant group, is thought to have ties to Iran.

Israeli police say they have arrested two people after a car ran over pedestrians in Jerusalem this morning, leaving three with minor injuries.

Footage of the incident, which was caught on CCTV and aired by Israeli media, appears to show a car hitting three ultra-Orthodox Jews, with at least two of them flying over the dashboard.

Two of the victims are males aged 21 and 15.

Following the incident, officers say the suspects fled on foot, leaving behind a makeshift "Carlo" submachine gun.

Police said two "terrorists" came out of the car with the weapon and tried to open fire but were "unsuccessful".

Officers and border forces searched for the pair, who fled on foot and left the weapon behind on their way.

Palestinians have carried out periodic attacks on Israeli cities and towns since the country's war against Hamas began on 7 October, while violence has spiked in the West Bank in that time.

Iran's president has arrived in the Pakistani capital for a three-day visit.

Major highways in Islamabad have been blocked as part of security measures for Ebrahim Raisi's arrival, while the government declared a public holiday in Karachi.

The visit, which Pakistan's foreign office said will run until Wednesday, comes as the two Muslim neighbours seek to mend ties after unprecedented  tit-for-tat military strikes in January.

"The Iranian president is accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation," Pakistan's foreign ministry said, adding the group also includes the foreign minister and other senior officials.

Mr Raisi will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials, besides visiting the eastern city of Lahore and southern port city of Karachi, it added.

Pakistan and Iran have a history of rocky relations, with Islamabad being historically closer to Saudi Arabia and the US.

The head of Israeli military intelligence has resigned over failures around the 7 October attack.

Aharon Haliva is the first senior figure to step down over Hamas's attack.

He had said in October he shouldered the blame for failing to prevent the attack, which broke through Israel's vaunted defences.

The Israeli military said in a statement the military chief of staff accepted Mr Haliva's resignation and thanked him for his service.

Earlier this morning, we reported that two people had been lightly injured in a suspected car ramming attack in Jerusalem.

Police have now given an update to say the number of those injured has risen to three.

Two of the victims, both suffering from minor injures, are males aged 21 and 15.

They are being treated at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre, according to The Times of Israel.

The force earlier called the ramming a terror attack.

Following the incident, the suspects fled on foot, leaving behind a makeshift "Carlo" submachine gun.
