Fun Facts about the Florida Everglades

The Florida Everglades National Park is incredible, and it’s easy to see why people travel from all over the world to take an Everglades tour through the wetlands. The Everglades is incredible to see in person, with their unique vegetation and exciting wildlife. Despite the recent focus on the ecosystem, there is still much to learn about its contribution to South Florida and beyond. Here are three fascinating facts about the Everglades gleaned from park experts that may surprise you.

  • The Everglades is a river: Believe it or not, the Everglades is a constantly moving river, which is ideal for an Everglades airboat tour . Water trickles from Lake Okeechobee to the south, forming a slow-moving river sixty miles wide and a hundred miles long. However, the “River of Grass” is much smaller than it used to be. Construction and related drainage projects have destroyed up to 50% of the wetland habitat.
  • It is the only location on the planet where alligators and crocodiles coexist:  The Everglades are home to both crocodiles and gators. Crocs are mostly found in small numbers along the ‘glades’ coast, whereas alligators prefer to stay inland, near freshwater. Despite this, the Everglades ecosystem provides a natural habitat for both, and it is the only place on the planet where these reptiles coexist in the wild.
  • There are 9 habitats providing a home to 16 endangered or threatened species: The Florida Everglades may be complex, but it’s that complexity that makes them so spectacular. The Florida panther and alligator are just two of the endangered animals that the Everglades ecosystem protects. With nine distinct habitats, the Everglades is also home to more than 16 species of birds, a variety of mammals, reptiles, plants, and a wealth of unique flora. America’s wetlands are spectacular and a fantastic learning environment for adventurous families, photographers, and nature lovers alike.

If you want to learn more and a trip through the Everglades sounds like fun, a narrated tour could be the answer! Visit our Best Everglades Tours in Miami , featuring 60-minute airboat ride, live alligator shows and a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with Florida’s finest.

THE BEST AIRBOAT TOURS IN   MIAMI

Tucked in the heart of the wetlands, the Florida Everglades is a hidden jewel of natural beauty and thrilling adventure. Glittering rivers and swamps banked by acres of Sawgrass make up the majority of this hidden paradise. Home to hundreds of species of birds and animals – and the only place in the world where crocodiles and alligators live side-by-side – these wetlands are a must-see attraction, and offer an unforgettable experience.

The Florida Everglades hosts an amazing variety of creatures, including many on the endangered species list – it is, in fact, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Everglades National Park has also been designated an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of National Importance.

Passengers of Miami Airboat rides will have the chance to see magnificent beauty up close and personal, in the very heart of the Everglades. As third-generation Everglades Captains, we know the magnificent Everglades like the back of our hands; and with Miami airboat tours, you get the insider perspective. While drifting down the still waters, you may come within touching distance of an American Alligator, or see the eyes of a Florida White-tailed Deer watching from a hammock. Snow-white egrets stalk majestically among the lily pads, while the Great Blue Herron stalks its next meal.

Tailored to individuals, our Airboat Tour is fully customized to suit your particular dream tour. Whether you wish to watch the sun set over the ten thousand islands of Florida Bay or take advantage of the early dawn hours to listen to the birdsong of swamp-dwelling songbirds, we can create the tour for you. Our experienced guides have the knowledge and training to help you make the most of your tour, giving you insider information on secret spots and must-see wonders.

Because of the size and maneuverability of our Airboats, we go places other people cannot, offering you secret spots and untouched paradises. You will learn about the various species of plants, animals, and birds inhabiting the Everglades, as well as see first-hand the living, swaying, rippling beauty of the “River of Grass.” Our skilled Captains are also masters of their crafts and can maneuver for a closer look at a flash of brilliant plumage or green scales.

The natural beauty of the Everglades is nothing short of breathtaking, and you’ll want to capture it on film – otherwise, you’ll hardly believe your eyes! The Everglades offer a unique and unbeatable experience for budding photographers or even just camera-happy tourists.

With up-close-and-personal encounters with a variety of species, you’ll leave the lorid wetlands with a lot of good memories captured in unbelievable sights. Along with its more well-known populations of alligators, crocodiles, panthers, and manatees, the Everglades are also home to otters, snakes, raccoons, and over 350 species of birds. Some of the most rare and endangered species in the United States live here – and with Miami Airboat Tours, you can come face to face with these threatened treasures.

The Airboat Tour offers a unique combination of luxurious travel and a down-to-earth experience. Fast, sleek, and powerful, our boats can take you anywhere in the wetlands in a matter of minutes, or slip silently through the glades for luxurious hours. Years Of Experience

Cypress Outdoor Adventures is a dream that I’ve had since I was a child. I was fortunate to grow up in the Everglades. My father would take me out almost every weekend and we would explore the Everglades with family and friends. The life’s lessons and respect learned for mother nature and other Gladesmen, are what made me the person I am today. It built strong bonds with my family and gave me a deep appreciation for nature.

Amazing trip

Brilliant 2 hour trip and Captain Pete was excellent.

Captain Daniel is the best

He's absolutely passionate about the River of Grass aka the Everglades and it shows in how he communicates and passes on his knowledge.

Memorable trip across the Everglades.

Very easy to arrange via the website and clear communications.

10/10 would do it again.

It was definitely a highlight of my family's vacation to southern Florida. 10/10 would do it again. We saw so much wildlife, and our guide shared a ton of information about the Everglades.

Loved this adventure! This was scheduled to be our first activity upon arriving in Florida and I chose it because it's a fairly short drive from the Miami Airport.

If you're planning a trip to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida , visiting Everglades National Park should be on your to-do list. The South Florida national park is known for its expansive beauty, as well as its varied population of wildlife that includes everything from bobcats to alligators.

To see all the Everglades has to offer, sign up for a guided tour. U.S. News consulted both traveler sentiment and expert opinion to identify the top Everglades tours. Before you go, make sure you read through the National Park Service's Wildlife Viewing Ethics to keep both yourself and the animals safe during your time in the park. When choosing the best Everglades tours, we avoided recommending operators that promote wildlife shows or encourage feeding or holding the animals for photo-ops.

Visitors should plan to pay a fee to enter the park, as it may not be included in the price of the tour ticket. You should also keep in mind that many of these tour operators are located at least 30 miles west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Tours that run on airboats – open-air vessels with huge fans at the back that propel the boat – can be very loud. Companies will generally offer ear protection, but if you or your companions are sensitive to loud noises, contact the tour provider to discuss options before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Like any other form of transportation, riding an airboat may come with some risks. To stay safe on your Everglades airboat tour, be sure to choose a company run by experienced, professional boaters (most of which undergo special training and are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard) and adhere to all rules set forth by your guide. Parents should keep a close eye on children and be sure they are properly fitted for their life jackets, and all passengers should protect against the heat by wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. Commercial airboats typically do not exceed speeds of 30 to 40 mph to ensure a safe, smooth ride, and most operators will reschedule your tour in the event of lightning or other inclement weather. Tour companies will also generally provide riders with proper ear protection, as the boats are quite loud.

Typically, passengers will feel the most comfortable in lightweight, sleeveless clothing and shorts while on an Everglades airboat tour. If you are taking a wintertime tour, keep an eye on the weather – pants and long sleeves may be a better option, but you likely won't need a heavy jacket. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen and water to protect yourself from the effects of the sun; you may also want a hat to provide further shade and keep hair in place. Passengers with long hair are advised to wear it in a ponytail or bun to keep it from becoming knotted in the wind. Tourgoers may also wish to apply some bug spray prior to embarking on their adventure.

Airboat tours last about an hour, though duration will depend on the tour company.

An airboat's top speed is about 30 mph.

Not normally, but you run a small risk of getting misted with water. If you take a tour when it is raining, expect to get wet.

In winter, you'll want to time your visit for midday, when it warms up. In summer, you'll want to visit in the morning or later afternoon when it's coolest. Visiting at these times can increase your chances of seeing wildlife, but you'll likely see all kinds of critters no matter when you visit year-round.

‘The alligator was right there’: 10 rescued after airboat overturns in Everglades National Park; operator arrested

WEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A good Samaritan came to the rescue of multiple passengers on board an airboat after, officials said, the vessel overturned near Everglades National Park in West Miami-Dade, leading to the arrest of its operator.

Hip-deep in the swampy waters was not exactly the way these visitors wanted to experience the river of grass, Friday afternoon.

Cellphone video captured the passengers wading through the water.

“Do you guys see a phone, by any chance?” a woman said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units arrived at The Original Airboat Tour, located in the area of 22700 SW 8th St., in the Coopertown area, just after 2 p.m.

Investigators said the boat’s operator and nine passengers were on board when it turned suddenly, causing everyone to fall into the water.

One of the passengers, Jose Maldonado, told 7News he had been taking some friends and family members visiting from out of town, some from Puerto Rico, out on the boat to look for alligators.

At some point, Maldonado said, the person operating the airboat made a “hard turn.”

“All of a sudden, the captain wanted to make a U-turn, sort of on the water, so we could get a better picture of the crocodile, and the boat just flipped on its side,” he said, “and we were all in the water, and we were all screaming because the alligator was right there.”

After the boat flipped, someone could be heard on a cellphone video recording saying, “I’m sorry about that. I was kind of turning. Water started getting in the back, so I gassed it.”

Juan Carlos Negro, who is visiting from Puerto Rico, said he was left with scratches.

Speaking through a translator, Negro said that when the boat tipped over, he was afraid the alligators were going to come.

When asked whether or not the alligator swam away, Maldonado replied, “I think so. I think he was probably more scared of us than we were of him.”

Passengers tried to flip the boat over, but it was too heavy. Fortunately, they said, they weren’t in the water too long, 10 to 15 minutes.

Good Samaritan David Gonzalez happened to come by with his airboat and picked them up.

“We had room, because it was a private tour, so we had a lot of space,” said Gonzalez.

“We’ve been here before, these guys are good, they’re professional. This doesn’t happen often,” said Maldonado. “We said, ‘Let’s do this,’ took a day off from work. Maybe we should have stayed at work.”

Hours later, cameras captured officials with FWC taking the boat’s operator into custody.

Officials said the operator, an employee of Coopertown Airboat Rides, was arrested and taken to jail for having neither proof of completion of a boating safety course nor a captain’s license issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The business shut down for the rest of the day so employees could focus on towing the water-logged boat back to the dock.

Fire rescue crews rendered aid to one person on land. That person was not transported to the hospital.

As of late Friday night, authorities have not released the name of the boat’s operator, as they continue to investigate.

WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Multiple people rescued after airboat flips in everglades; driver arrested.

Samiar Nefzi , Reporter

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Multiple people were rescued from the waters of the Everglades in far western Miami-Dade County Friday afternoon after an airboat flipped over.

It happened south of the Tamiami Trail, about five miles west of Krome Avenue.

Video from Sky 10 showed multiple people being taken away from the boat on other airboats.

Sky 10 video showed Miami-Dade police and fire rescue crews, along with U.S. park rangers and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, converging at Coopertown Airboats, located at 22700 SW Eighth St., which owns the airboat.

Several passengers told Local 10 News that the captain was trying to maneuver the airboat to get a better look at an alligator in the water and possibly turned too fast, flipping on its side.

“(The) boat just flipped on its side and we’re all in the water,” a passenger said. “I was screaming, because the alligator’s right there. Luckily, no one was hurt badly. A couple of scratches here and there — an accident. Things happen.”

Ten people were believed to be aboard the vessel.

According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, one person was assessed for injuries but was not taken to the hospital.

There were no reports of additional injuries.

“My first thought was panic, I was afraid for my wife and family members, and then I thought about the alligator,” said passenger Jose Maldonado.

Passengers said they were left stranded for between 10 and 15 minutes.

“We tried to flip the boat over but it was just too heavy,” said Maldonado.

After the crash, FWC officers and U.S. park rangers were seen leading a man, wearing a shirt similar to those worn by Coopertown employees, into a pickup truck in handcuffs, then taken away.

Officials later confirmed that man was the operator of the airboat, and that he was subsequently arrested “for having neither proof of completion of a boating safety course nor a captain’s license issued by the United States Coast Guard.”

That man’s identity has not been released.

It’s believed between 20 and 40 gallons of fuel spilled into the water after the airboat tipped over.

Airboat operator arrested after vessel flips over in the Everglades

By Mauricio Maldonado , Nikiya Carrero

Updated on: March 29, 2024 / 11:28 PM EDT / CBS Miami

MIAMI - The operator of an airboat was arrested Friday afternoon after his vessel flipped over while carrying 9 people in the Everglades in western Miami-Dade.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said, "The operator of the airboat, an employee of Coopertown Airboat Rides, was arrested and transported to jail for having neither proof of completion of a boating safety course nor a captain's license issued by the United States Coast Guard."

Chopper 4 flew over the scene just south of the Tamiami Trail, images showed the vessel on its side in shallow water.

CBS News Miami spoke with passengers who were on that airboat.

They described the scary moments after the airboat flipped and then they were in the water.

All 10 people were recovered from the water and treated on land for minor injuries, officials said.

They all said the driver was making a U-turn because of an alligator in the water.

That's when they felt the boat tilting, after what they said was a sharp U-turn.

Authorities said one person was assessed for injuries, but not transported to a hospital.

Florida Fish and Wildlife is the lead agency investigating this incident.

The investigation continues.

Florida airboat flips sending 9 passengers into gator-infested waters, operator arrested

airboat tour from miami

An airboat tour in the Florida Everglades capsized sending passengers overboard on Friday, officials say. This happened when the airboat's driver took a sharp turn to try to see an alligator in the water, according to multiple reports.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said three units responded to a waterway near Coopertown The Original Airboat Tour in the Everglades Friday afternoon. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, nine people and the operator all fell into the water when the boat took a quick turn.

By time MDFR arrived, everyone had climbed out of the water, and only one patient was treated for injuries on the scene.

But the boat's operator was arrested after FWC said he did not have the proper documentation necessary to operate the boat. His employer, Coopertown, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment Monday morning.

Boat passengers say they were afraid of alligators in water, reports state

Passengers told Local 10 the boat operator was trying to get a closer look at a nearby alligator when the airboat flipped.

“My first thought was panic, I was afraid for my wife and family members, and then I thought about the alligator,” passenger Jose Maldonado told Local 10.

NBC Miami said the boat was partially submerged in the water and some passengers were standing on top waiting for help.

Alligator mating season runs from early April until the end of June, when the Sunshine State sees more activity and they become more aggressive.
