NCIS Filming Locations | New Orleans

Iconic backdrops and local hangouts, ncis has made its way all throughout new orleans.

Last Updated: Thursday, May 27, 2021 9:57 AM

Millions of viewers tuned in weekly for their daily dose of naval-based investigations on NCIS: New Orleans, and while the series may have ended, the fan base remains. While Special Agent Pride and his team make up most of the cast, it’s New Orleans that truly steals the show! Local fests, bars, attractions and even a few hidden city secrets can be spotted throughout the series. Save the crime scenes but add an extra side of adventure as you explore the Crescent City with a few of these iconic NCIS: New Orleans filming locations.

Beignets - Cafe du Monde

Cafe du Monde

Nothing says NOLA quite like beignets and cafe au lait. Whether you have a crime to solve or a sweet tooth to satisfy, Cafe du Monde is the first stop you’ll want to make.

R Bar

Better known as the Tru Tone Bar to NCIS: New Orleans fanatics, the R Bar is a local hangout located inside of the Royal Street Inn. Spend a night out in NOLA like Agent Pride and advantage of their expansive beer collection and local feel.

Krewe of Nyx Parade

Mardi Gras Parades

In true New Orleans fashion, of course, they had to sprinkle in a Mardi Gras episode. If you’re in town during the Crescent City’s most wonderful time of year, make sure to check out parades like Zulu, Rex and Muses. No need to catch criminals, keep your hands free for throws.

St. Joseph’s Cemetery

NOLA Cemeteries

New Orleans is known for its unique cemeteries (unique implies there aren’t others). These breathtaking, above-ground tombs are the resting grounds of countless well-known New Orleanians including Marie Laveau and Homer Plessy of the landmark Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson.

Always make sure to show respect and care while touring the cemeteries.

Red Dress Run

Red Dress Run

Like thousands of other locals and visitors alike, Special Agent Pride and his team joined in the annual Red Dress Run. For over three decades, this charitable event has painted the city red with eager runners. Pride and his crew stopped over at Louis Armstrong Park during their run. Where will you and your friends go?

Julia Street

Art Districts + Galleries

Home to a host of amazing artists and artwork, New Orleans is the perfect place to go gallery hopping. NCIS: New Orleans pays homage to the city’s thriving art scene with pieces by local artists Jane Brewster, Jimmy Descant and William Smith Jr. Explore more with galleries throughout the Arts/Warehouse District , street art in the French Quarter , and stunning murals in the Bywater/Marigny .

New Orleans Film, TV, + Book Locations Tour

ncis new orleans set tour

This blog post offers a route for exploring French Quarter locations that were key to films, TV shows, and books set in New Orleans.

It’s a companion to our video tour (click the image below to watch) on the same subject, but you can also use this page during an in-person visit to discover these sites on your own.

New Orleans TV, Film, and Book Locations

The route covers several parts of the French Quarter and a small portion of the Marigny, an adjoining neighborhood.

The walk begins in Jackson Square in the center of the French Quarter. Begin by standing in front of St. Louis Cathedral, looking away from the church and toward the Andrew Jackson statue.

Jackson Square itself is home to many shoots, including moments from NCIS: New Orleans and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

New Orleans TV, Film, and Book Locations Map

Turn left and walk to the corner of the Square; you’ll be at the intersection of St. Ann and Chartres Streets.

The block of Chartres straight ahead of you was the location of a memorable moment from James Bond: Live and Let Die.

It featured a jazz funeral, one of New Orleans’s traditional processions with a marching band leading the way from the church to the gravesite with dirge music.

Live and Let Die Jazz Funeral Scene

The film also featured less traditional Louisiana moments, like crossing a body of water by using alligators as stepping stones. (We Louisianians leave such feats to the British.)

Turn left onto St. Ann and proceed straight ahead. Cross Royal Street; on the next block, watch on the right for an innocuous archway in a brick wall.

This gateway is one of the most frequently shot locations in NCIS: New Orleans, where it serves as the entryway to the NCIS headquarters.

NCIS New Orleans Headquarters Location

(The interior of the HQ is shot on a sound stage in another part of town.) NCIS uses locations all over the city, and we’ll pass another in the course of the walk.

Turn around and return to the intersection of St. Ann and Royal Streets and turn left onto Royal Street. At the end of the block, at the intersection with Dumaine, you’ll see a large brick building on the left.

This building is a major element of the show The Originals – the main characters spend a season fighting for control of it.

The Originals New Orleans Location

Like NCIS, The Originals shoots its interiors elsewhere, but unlike NCIS, that elsewhere is much further away – in Atlanta.

Even exteriors are mostly shot there, on sets built to look like French Quarter streets.

Turn right onto Dumaine Street. On the right, you’ll see a wide building with a ground floor of white brick and an upper of green-painted wood.

This is one of many sites featured in Interview with the Vampire, the coffin scene .

This film and the novel it was based on, written by Anne Rice, introduced the world to the idea that New Orleans was crawling with vampires and set the stage for other locally-set vampire sagas like The Originals and True Blood.

Interview with a Vampire coffin scene

The house is called Madame John’s Legacy, a name it gets from a short story by 19 th -century writer George Washington Cable.

Cable played an early role in defining perceptions of New Orleans among readers from other parts of the United States.

His works were influential enough that this house was named for one of them – not because it had anything directly to do with Cable’s work, but because it looked like a house featured in one of his stories and provided a visual reference for tourists.

The building was also used in 12 Years a Slave , a film we’ll revisit further along the walk.

Go back to Royal Street and turn right. Continue a block and cross St. Philip Street.  On the next block, look on the right for a two-story townhouse with iron railings, 1018 Royal Street.

King Creole Balcony New Orleans

This building played the part of Elvis Presley’s home in King Creole, his favorite of the films he made.

The neighborhood had an effect on him – he was one of many rock musicians whose style paid tribute to early recordings by Fats Domino, recorded on the edge of the French Quarter.

And he and the film had an effect on the neighborhood, too – while Bourbon Street used to be a jazz corridor, Elvis and King Creole helped set an expectation for rock and roll that the street fulfills to this day.

Continue along Royal Street, crossing Ursulines Street. On the block that follows, watch on the right for the Gallier House at 1132 Royal.

You may see a sign with the name of the house hanging at 1128 Royal, next door; this building houses the box office for touring this historic home.

American Horror Story home of Delphine LaLaurie

The property was featured in American Horror Story: Coven as the home of Delphine LaLaurie, one of the French Quarter’s most infamous 19 th -century residents.

Today, ghost tours regularly tell her story, congregating around the last house on this block, still called the LaLaurie Mansion.

But that house is a replacement, built on the site of Madame LaLaurie’s 19 th -century home.

The Gallier House looks more the part. AHS: Coven shot all over town, as did the subsequent season of the show, AHS: Freakshow .

From here, our next stop is several blocks away. Continue along Royal Street across Governor Nicholls Street, then Barracks Street, and finally to Esplanade Avenue.

Turn right on Esplanade and walk one block to the intersection with Chartres Street.

In the median on Esplanade is a historical plaque explaining that this intersection was once the home of the slave market where Solomon Northup, the writer, and protagonist of the book 12 Years a Slave, was sold into slavery.

12 Years a Slave Auction House Location

The building no longer stands. The film of 12 Years a Slave used New Orleans both as itself and as Saratoga, New York – the town where Northup lived before his abduction.

Turn left onto Chartres, walk a block, and turn left onto Kerlerec Street. (By crossing Esplanade, you’ve left the French Quarter for the Marigny, home of Frenchmen Street, a music strip located just beyond our route.)

At the end of the block, at the intersection of Kerlerec and Royal Streets, is the R Bar.

Tru Tone Bar New Orleans Location

The exterior of this building is used in NCIS: New Orleans as the Tru-Tone Bar, the main characters’ go-to hangout. In reality, it’s a working bar with a guesthouse upstairs.

Our next stops are back near where we began, around Jackson Square.

To get there, turn left on Royal Street, cross Esplanade Avenue back into the French Quarter, and continue for seven blocks to the intersection with Orleans Street.

Orleans St. is on the right; on the left, you’ll see the back of St. Louis Cathedral. Just past the Cathedral, turn left onto Pirates Alley , a narrow, pedestrian-only path.

A few doors down on the right is Faulkner House Books.

William Faulkner is a former resident of this building; he lived here and in another cheap apartment right around the corner in Cabildo Alley during the little more than a year he spent living in the French Quarter.

William Faulkner House New Orleans

It was a brief but formative time; he wrote short fiction that was published in local newspapers and magazines, befriended the then-renowned novelist Sherwood Anderson, and, with the older writer’s help, published his first two novels, Soldier’s Pay and Mosquitoes .

He was just one of many bohemian characters in the French Quarter of the 1920s, living cheaply and colorfully in a neighborhood that was home to thousands of immigrant Sicilians, dozens of artists, countless bars (during Prohibition), and only two tour guides.

The bookstore is small, but it holds historic copies of Faulkner’s works and sells an excellent selection of New Orleans-related fiction and nonfiction, and the staff has the knowledge to make recommendations.

Just past Faulkner House Books, turn right into Cabildo Alley. The alley ends when it meets St. Peter Street. There, look right and you’ll see, across the street, a tall building painted red, with an exposed-brick top floor.

Tennessee Williams House New Orleans

That top floor was one of several homes of Tennessee Williams, who took inspiration from the French Quarter and came and went several times in his life. He lived in this building while writing A Streetcar Named Desire.

At that time in the 1940s, streetcars still ran through the French Quarter, including one with the word “Desire” across the front, named for Desire Street, its destination.

Iconic as it is, A Streetcar Named Desire has less connection with the French Quarter than viewers often expect.

The action is located on Elysian Fields Avenue in the Marigny, not far from the R Bar. And the film was mostly shot in California.

But for the French Quarter atmosphere from the same era, Elia Kazan, the director of Streetcar , shot another film shortly before called Panic in the Streets , which uses the French Quarter as the setting for a detective-flavored story about a public health official tracking down a man carrying a deadly plague.

Our last stop is on the edge of the French Quarter, on Canal Street.

To get there, turn right onto St. Peter Street, then left onto Royal Street, and walk six blocks to Canal Street. Turn right and walk a block, crossing the intersection with Bourbon Street.

On the next block of Canal, watch on the right for a statue. It depicts Ignatius J. Reilly, the main character of the novel A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

Among people who know New Orleans well, the book is famous for capturing local personalities and dialects. Circumstances around the book are also infamous.

Confederacy of Dunces

Toole committed suicide before it was published, and it only ever reached the public through years of effort by his mother Thelma Toole with the help of novelist Walker Percy.

And efforts to adapt the story for the screen have been notoriously doomed, with several actors dying while committed to the role.

The statue is modeled on local actor Spud McConnell, who has successfully played the role on stage. The building it stands before is the former home of the D.H. Holmes department store, where Ignatius is waiting for his mother as the book begins.

Thank you for joining our walk, whether digitally or in person. For more videos exploring New Orleans, visit our YouTube channel.

And if you’re in town, consider joining us for a walk of the French Quarter , which will explore other aspects of the history of several of these sites.

Can you visit? Are they filming now?

We were there in Feb stayed at the inn on St Ann, we found the entrance to the set but it's set back in the middle of the block. No signs posted for it.

We were just in NOLA's this week. On Tuesday night someone was filming outside Cafe du Munde. There were big lights set up, trucks, cables on the street and people walking around with shirts that read "film crew". While on our ghost tour a truck with the words "Hollywood Filming" drove by. By the time our ghost tour was over and we went back to that street they were cleaning up. Whatever they were filming they were very quick about it.

Was just in NOLA on Wednesday and spotted them filming along St. Charles Ave.

The NCIS Nola "Office" is entirely indoors in a studio, including he courtyard. It's not in the French Quarter but outside of the area.

Hi Lorraine,

Do you have your grandkids leave the room when NCIS has all the murder, shooting, and blood and gore, or just when two same sex people love one another? Murder, bullets, bodies, THAT's OK but NOT two people kissing! Great family values. Your family, not mine.

will be in NOLA next week, a "girls trip" of 5....would we be able to visit set and how could we go about it?

Thank you for any advice,

Camille Costanzo

Hey Camille, they are wrapped for season 4 and season 5 will start in September. The “sets” are at a sound stage in Harahan, but you can see the place that plays the exterior of the “Tru-Tone”. The real place is the R Bar on Royal just off Esplanade. And you can see the exterior of the headquarters on St. Anne(?) between Bourbon and Royal.

The Actual Filming Locations of NCIS: New Orleans

of The Actual Filming Locations of NCIS: New Orleans

‘NCIS: New Orleans’ is the second spin-off of ‘ NCIS ’ after ‘ NCIS: Los Angeles .’ The spin-off was conceptualized after a two-part special in the eleventh season of ‘NCIS.’ As its title suggests, the show revolves around the operations of the Naval Crime Investigatory Service in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.

To be more specific, the NCIS New Orleans unit mainly deals with crimes that involve personnel from the United States Military or Navy. The show has received mixed to favorable reviews. Praise has largely gone to its stellar casting which makes the extension of a popular franchise in a new territory feel natural. Moreover, the depiction of New Orleans is also something that has been appreciated about the series.

Where Was NCIS: New Orleans Filmed?

Well, it is no secret that ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ is set in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. However, is the show actually filmed in New Orleans? The setting of the police procedural definitely feels extremely authentic and that is the reason that viewers would already suspect that the show has been filmed in New Orleans. Continue reading to find out whether such speculations are true, or merely…speculations.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Yep, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ has been actually filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana. The production crew films extensively on-location in the city and that adds a sense of authenticity to its depiction of the “Big Easy.”

https://twitter.com/skylit_sam02/status/619640468951969792

To begin with, the soundstage on which most of the interior filming for the show is carried out is located in the New Orleans suburb, Harahan. To be more specific, the soundstage is situated on 719, St. Ann Street between Bourbon Street and Royal Street.

The building feels like an entryway that would transport anyone who enters directly to the world of ‘NCIS: New Orleans.’ This building is where scenes set in the NCIS New Orleans headquarters are filmed.

The headquarters building, as seen on the show consists of the squad room, a kitchen and a courtyard. Moreover, there is also an interrogation room on the complex, apart from the morgue that is seen on the show. Dr. Wade and Sebastian Lund’s laboratory has also been constructed on the complex. The entire building acts as a composite filming location for the show in this manner.

The production team put in a lot of time and effort to make St. Ann Street and the soundstage feel as if it was lived place, with a history of its own. They put a faded sign of a stable in the building’s courtyard to connote the existence of a stable in the fictional past of the street that is depicted to exist in New Orleans (not a suburb).

Moreover, a lot of high-tech equipment including multiple screens had to be installed in the building which serves as the NCIS New Orleans headquarters. Plus, careful attention was placed to make the headquarters building look like it is actually located in New Orleans. For instance, the equipment was all plugged in, with the wires visible.

The above was done to make the headquarters look less slick since the production wanted to distinguish it from the sets of ‘NCIS’ and ‘NCIS: Los Angeles.’ Plus, it is way more likely for an office in New Orleans to be less advanced and sleek.

Apart from 719 St. Ann Street, filming was also carried out at New Orleans Motorsports Park on 11075 Nicolle Boulevard in Avondale, Louisiana. The Louis Armstrong Park on 701 N Rampart Street was also made use of to film exterior scenes.

Additionally, some of the other places in New Orleans where filming was carried out include the Plaza Tower on 1001 Howard Avenue and Baronne Street.

Furthermore, another tweet reveals how filming had been carried out at Madeville, Louisiana.

NCIS: New Orleans filming in Mandeville more low key than expected: NCIS: New Orleans filmed Monday (April 20) in… http://t.co/Q3ORQQHNZx — Breaking NOLA News (@breakingnonews) April 20, 2015

Will There Be an NCIS: New Orleans Season 8 Release Date & Is It Coming Out?

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Created by Gary Glasberg,   NCIS : New Orleans is a CBS police procedural TV series that serves as a spin-off to NCIS and is the third entry in the NCIS franchise. The series predominantly takes place in New Orleans and revolves around a fictional team of special agents belonging to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), as they investigate various criminal cases related to the US military. NCIS: New Orleans premiered on March 25, 2014, and garnered mostly positive reviews. Season 7 originally aired between November 8, 2020, and May 23, 2021. If you are wondering whether there will be a season 8 , this is what we have discovered.

Here’s all we know about NCIS: New Orleans Season 8 and whether or not it’s coming out.

Is there an NCIS: New Orleans Season 8 release date?

There is no NCIS: New Orleans Season 8 release date as the series concluded after seven seasons.

In May 2020, NCIS: New Orleans was renewed for the seventh season. In February 2021, while season 7 was on-air, it was announced that the said season would be the final chapter of the series. Scott Bakula, who portrays Dwayne “King” Cassius Pride, said in a statement, “Sad to end our love affair with this phenomenal city but so grateful for all the friends we made along the way. I will miss the music. Big thank you to CBS for seven years.”

Showrunners Jan Nash and Christopher Silber echoed Bakula’s sentiment in their statement. “It has been our sincere pleasure and honor to work on this show and with this incredible cast and crew for over 150 episodes,” the statement said. “As disappointed as we are to see NOLA end, we couldn’t be prouder of the work we’ve done and are grateful to the spectacular and resilient Crescent City that embraced us for seven wonderful years.”

NCIS: New Orleans has the distinction of being the first NCIS show to come to an end. Silber and Nash went on to develop NCIS: Hawaiʻi, another entry in the NCIS franchise, with Matt Bosack. The new show premiered on September 20, 2021.

The cast includes Scott Bakula as Dwayne “King” Cassius Pride, Lucas Black as Christopher LaSalle, Zoe McLellan as Meredith Brody, Rob Kerkovich as Sebastian Lund, CCH Pounder as Loretta Wade, Shalita Grant as Sonja Percy, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Patton Plame, Vanessa Ferlito as Tammy Gregorio, Necar Zadegan as Hannah Khoury, and more.

Why NCIS: New Orleans Season 8 isn’t happening

NCIS: New Orleans Season 8 isn’t coming out because, as mentioned above, the series ended after seven seasons . ComingSoon will provide an update if the circumstances change.

The official synopsis for NCIS: New Orleans reads:

“A drama about the local field office that investigates criminal cases affecting military personnel in The Big Easy, a city known for its music, entertainment and decadence.”

The Real Reason NCIS: New Orleans Is Ending After Season 7

NCIS: New Orleans Scott Bakula squinting

It's the end of the road for NCIS: New Orleans .

Created by Gary Glasberg, the Scott Bakula-led procedural debuted on CBS back in 2014 and is currently in the midst of airing its seventh season on the network. It's the third — and newest — series in CBS' NCIS franchise , which also includes  NCIS: Los Angeles and the original NCIS . The former series has been running for 12 seasons, while the latter is in its 18th season right now. There is the potential that both shows could return with new seasons in the fall.

However, if they do come back, they won't be joined by NCIS: New Orleans . On February 17, 2021, it was announced that the spin-off series has officially been canceled, making its seventh season its last (via  Deadline ).

This news came as a surprise to fans of both NCIS: New Orleans and the overall  NCIS universe, which has been a steady and reliable franchise for CBS up until this point. But there are a few reasons why CBS is choosing to say goodbye to NCIS: New Orleans . Let's take a look at why the show is ending with season 7.

Why NCIS: New Orleans is coming to an end

There were several key factors that played a role in CBS' decision to cancel NCIS: New Orleans . According to Deadline , the first big factor was the show's inability to match the ratings success of both NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles ; in its seventh season currently airing on CBS,  NCIS: New Orleans is averaging noticeably lower numbers than its fellow  NCIS series. While CBS hasn't — and likely won't — come out and explicitly say that declining ratings were one of the reasons why NCIS: New Orleans got the axe, it's rarely a good idea to keep a floundering show afloat, even if its poor viewership ratings are balanced out or even outweighed by a passionate fanbase. (Just look at what happened to Hannibal .)

Deadline also reports that NCIS: New Orleans failed to acquire the same kind of "off-network" deals that the other two NCIS titles have, which usually bring in big money for the network and therefore could have softened the impact of its lower ratings. NCIS: New Orleans not being able to secure those deals is, in Deadline 's words, largely due to "the fundamental changes in the TV business over the past decade."

The series still managed to run for seven seasons, which is an achievement in and of itself nowadays. NCIS: New Orleans ' cancellation also comes at the same time that its executive producers and showrunners Christopher Silber and Jan Nash are developing another NCIS spin-off, NCIS: Hawaii , for CBS. Whether or not that project will formally move forward at the network remains to be seen, though it's been reported that it's nearing a straight-to-series order.

By the time everything is said and done, NCIS: New Orleans will have aired a total of 155 episodes, with its series finale is set to air on May 16.

Rolling Stones Perform ‘Time Is on My Side’ With New Orleans Legend Irma Thomas at Steamy Jazz Fest: Concert Review

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - MAY 02: Mick Jagger, Steve Jordan and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones perform with Irma Thomas (3rd from L) on Day 5 of 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at Fair Grounds Race Course on May 02, 2024 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Erika Goldring/Getty Images)

“We haven’t done a matinee show in years,” Mick Jagger observed drolly, halfway through The Rolling Stones ’ first appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on Thursday evening. As usual, the Stones began their set with “Start Me Up” — but shortly after 5 p.m., launching into an early but enthusiastic 18-song set of old hits and new numbers from 2023’s “Hackney Diamonds,” and a couple of local surprises in honor of the occasion.

Popular on Variety

For “Let it Bleed,” the Stones welcomed Dwayne Dopsie, the self-proclaimed “King of Accordion” and leader of the Zydeco Hellraisers. It was hard to figure out who was having more fun with this particular arrangement, him or the individual Stones. The ever-reliable Ron Wood — who covered many bases during the evening’s performance — moved to lap steel and the band gave Dopsie the solo spot; Keith Richards seemed to just barely graze his guitar strings (not that the song needed more) while beaming at their guest. Jazz Fest always welcomes a crowd from far beyond New Orleans, but there were still plenty of locals in the crowd, and there was a palpable feeling of pride at watching one of their own onstage with the international superstars.

But that particular “one of us!” vibe would ratchet way up with the next guest, none other than the “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” Irma Thomas. Thomas originally recorded “Time Is on My Side,” a song the young Stones turned into one of their earliest hits. “We heard this great song in 1964,” Jagger said, confirming the worst-kept secret in New Orleans, as Thomas was escorted onto the stage and took her place alongside the band. It was one of those rare moments where Mick Jagger was not in control of his stage. Thomas is a Jazz Fest regular, with her shows at the Gospel Tent always a must-see and a highlight of any festival weekend. At 83, she is still a poised and commanding presence, and nothing about that changed because she was now onstage with the Rolling Stones. Jagger mostly provided vocal support and harmony for Thomas’ vocals. Their version of “Time Is on My Side” was pretty much a note-for-note cover of her version, but in a sadly common syndrome of the era, theirs was the hit. At least some karmic balance was achieved on Thursday.

The crowd was audibly excited when the french horn began the intro to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and Mick complimented the audience on their participation at its conclusion. This was the moment when he began talking about how “We’re a welcoming crowd, aren’t we?” and then segued into a comment welcoming Louisiana governor Jeff Landry. “We want to include him too, even if he wants to take us back to the Stone Age,” he quipped, then immediately segued into introducing the ancillary musicians onstage with the Stones. (Mick, next time, consider “Street Fighting Man.”)

Next up was Keith Richards’ nightly solo spot. On this night, that honor went to “Little T&A” from 1981’s “Tattoo You,” in a version that included the horn section. It wasn’t the crispest version of a song that’s already fairly laid-back, but it was late in the set and was likely a casualty of the heat. Keith Richards was one of the few musicians onstage who remained in his full regalia of long-sleeve satin shirt (in various colors) as well as a red knit beanie all night. Richards was grinning ear to ear all night long, even if his contributions weren’t as strong as they’ve been in recent years.

“Sympathy for the Devil” is always a powerful moment in a Stones show, but its intensity unquestionably suffered by being performed in broad daylight. Jagger donned a ringmaster’s jacket that shimmered with blue and green sequins like a mermaid’s tail, but he only wore it as long as the moment demanded. “Miss You” fared better, even though Jagger would have been better off eschewing the electric guitar he dons for the briefest of moments for the harmonica he picked up at the end, at least in New Orleans where a large majority of the audience has genuine appreciation and respect for a good harp player; there was audible applause when he finished. Darryl Jones executed a colorful bass solo on command, with Jagger punching him playfully in the shoulder in approval when he finished.

Despite the heat and daylight, the band found its second wind in the back half of the set. “Honky Tonk Women” was sharp, less raunchy than celebratory. “Paint It Black” felt fresh and vibrant, and Richards was absolutely dominant during “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” He always seems to find a new way to hit those unmistakable chords and they rang out with authority across the fairgrounds. It was a moment where you realize you are hearing the person who wrote the song that you have heard hundreds, even thousands of times, play the chords live and in front of you. The show ended with “Satisfaction,” which was full of verve and genuine excitement both onstage and in the audience. It’s the song that everybody wants to see the Rolling Stones perform, even if they don’t consciously know it walking into the concert; there’s always such a collective sigh of, well, satisfaction when it’s performed.

Setlist: Start Me Up / Get Off of My Cloud / Out Of Time / Angry / Let It Bleed / Time Is On My Side / Whole Wide World / Tumbling Dice / You Can’t Always Get What You Want / Little T&A / Sympathy For The Devil / Honky Tonk Women / Miss You / Gimme Shelter / Paint It Black / Jumpin’ Jack Flash / encore: Sweet Sounds of Heaven / Satisfaction
