Alitalia (ITA Airways)

ITA Airways is the largest airline in Italy, known for its incredible flight services. It allows passengers to bring 5 Ferrets as long as they can cohabitate together. Every pet must be at least three weeks old and of the same species since they will only be required to travel inside one cage. However, it doesn’t allow any pets to travel to the United Kingdom or Ireland.

Carrier Size and Weight Restriction: The crate must not exceed 28 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (soft side carrier) and 24 cm х 40 cm х 20 cm (rigid side carrier). The soft side carriers can be higher if required. However, it must not exceed the size where it cannot fit the foot space under the passenger’s seat. The combined weight of pet or pets and the carrier must exceed over 22 lbs.

The only restriction is that all Ferrets must be of the same species, must happily cohabitate, and have enough space to turn 360 degrees around. Also, every pet should lie down on its feet and have sufficient space to stand. In case of inhumanely stuffing multiple Ferrets in one cage, Aeroflot can dismiss your travel anytime.

In all honesty, traveling with a pet, especially if it is a ferret, can be hard. There could be several issues you can come across on a flight.

However, keep in mind, all these above airlines can charge a lot if you are traveling with a pet. Mostly the price of traveling with a pet depends on its weight and its belongings. But you can contact the airline authorities and ask about their policies regarding pets, including the price you will have to pay for traveling with them. 

Things Your Ferret Will Need During Travel

Before any trip, take the contact number of your personal ferret veterinarian. Keeping in touch with a vet can help in case of emergencies during a flight. 

It is also good to take the contact number of the different vet offices near your hotel, so you can get your ferret checked when you are away from your personal vet. In addition, before leaving for a new destination, you would want to get your ferret checked up properly because it is important for your pet to be free of disease before you take him to another state.

Also, put some of the toys that your ferret loves in a bag. They can entertain themselves using their toys when you are not around. Since they will be traveling in a very small cage relative to the larger cage you likely have at home, it’s best they don’t feel too cramped or bored on the trip.

Claim A Ferret Passport

Claiming a ferret passport is easy; you will be done with all the paperwork within an hour. 

All you need to do is to go to your personal or nearest vet and give them all the past records of your ferrets’ medical history. Some vets might ask for some other things as well. 

Once you provide them all the important papers, they fill out the passport form for you and give you the ferret passport on the spot. 

It is a pretty quick process but a very important one when you are traveling.

Vaccinate Your Ferret

It is important to vaccinate your ferret before the flight.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing. 

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines  recently revised its policies  so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions. 

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo. 

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021. 

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum. 

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced. 

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it." 

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety. 

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation  and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.  

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024.  In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website. 

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours. 

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Alaska Airlines

Pet fee: $100

Pets allowed: Dogs and cats are the only pets allowed in-cabin on international trips and flights to Hawaii. Domesticated rabbits and small household birds are allowed as carry-on on domestic flights.

Destinations: Domestic and international, with additional requirements and documentation required for  pets traveling to Hawaii  or  internationally .

American Airlines changes pet policy, allows passengers to bring carry-on with pet carrier

Good news for pet owners! American Airlines is relaxing its pet policy and allowing those who travel with their animal companions to bring a full-size carry-on too, along with the pet carrier.

"On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight," says American Airline's on their website , adding that passengers can also bring "one additional item on board with your pet," which can be a personal item like a purse or small handbag or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin and meets the airline's requirements .

"Remember, you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both," says American.

Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, pet owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.

However, there has been no change in fees required to bring a pet onboard. That remains fixed at $150, as per the American Airline's website. Meanwhile, pet strollers are still required to be checked in and all checked bag fees apply.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment and what prompted the relaxation in policy.

Previously, passengers who traveled with a pet could only bring one small item that fit beneath the seat in front of them, the outlet reported. Larger carry-on bags had to be checked for a $35 fee on top of the standard $150 pet fee .

Carry-on pets refer to cats or dogs that meet the specified requirements for age, size, and destination, according to its policy. Pets can also be placed in American Airlines cargo.

"On March 28, American updated its cabin pet policy allowing customers who are traveling with a pet to bring a personal item or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bins," an American Airlines representative told BI. "We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American."

The latest policy update comes after American Airlines announced in February it will raise checked bag fees . One checked bag used to cost $30, and the second was $40. Now, the first checked bag for domestic flights is $35, and the second is $45.

The airline also changed how customers earn frequent flyer miles and loyalty points.

Guide to Choosing The Best Cabin Approved Ferret Carriers

As mentioned earlier, different airlines have specific requirements when it comes to which ferret carriers they allow on their planes.

Furthermore, you want to ensure that your ferret is as comfortable and stress-free on your flight.

Here’s some guidance on how to choose the best carrier for your ferret.

What features MUST ferret carriers have?

#1 adequate size..

Your ferret’s carrier must be large enough so that he/she has enough space to stand up, sit down, lie down and turn around without restriction.

However, it can’t be too big! Airlines have specific restrictions when it comes to the size of ferret carriers.

The specific dimensions differ between airlines, but generally the carrier must be able to fit underneathe the seat in front of you.

#2 Leak-Proof.

Most airlines will ask that your ferret carrier is leak-proof.

Thus, if your ferret has any accidents, then there mustn’t be any leakage through the bottom of the carrier.

#3 Bite-proof.

For the obvious reasons.

Firstly, you don’t want your ferret causing any trouble. Even if your ferret is normally an angel, some ferrets may get stressed on a flight.

Secondly, you want your ferret carrier to last you more than one trip! You want to make sure you select a carrier that is durable and can withstand a few bites and scratches.

#4 Breathable.

Again, for the obvious reason – your ferret needs oxygen to survive.

During the flight, your ferret carrier will need to be placed under the seat in front of you. Therefore, the walls and doors must be made from a breathable material that will allow your ferret enough air.

Most airlines require that your ferret’s carrier has at least 2 well-ventilated sides.

What features are RECOMMENDED for ferret carriers?

#1 expandable..

Being cooped up in a carrier for hours isn’t an ideal situation for most ferrets.

There are many ferret carriers on the market have expandable areas, to allow for extra space to stretch. Your ferret will definitely appreciate a carrier with this feature!

While you are waiting in the airport, or in transit, you can give your ferret a larger space to run around and stretch in. If you have enough room on the plane, you could even expand the carrier during the flight.

#2 A hard base / floorboard.

By this, we mean a base that is rigid and won’t turn into a hammock when picked up.

Not only will a hard base will be far more comfortable for your ferret, it’s also more convenient for you too.

It means that your ferret carrier would be easier to clean. You can just remove the base and wash it separately. Many of them are machine washable.

#3 Durable.

Stressed ferrets, or those out of their comfort zone are more prone to scratching and biting.

Therefore, you will want a carrier that can endure the wear and tear of travelling.

Although you might have to spend some extra money on a quality ferret carrier, it will be worth it in the long run.

#4 Lockable Zippers.

Imagine your ferret on the loose in the airport or on the plane – stressful right?!

Some ferrets can be masters of escape, so lockable zippers are ideal to prevent any airplane dramas!

#5 Multiple Doors.

Many ferret carriers have multiple doors, usually on the front and on the rooftop.

This is far more convenient as you can access your ferret from two different locations. This is especially useful when on the plane, when the carrier is tucked away under your the seat in front of you.

#6 Soft Material.

Soft sided ferret carriers have a lot of advantages over hard-sided carriers.

Firstly, they tend to be lighter and easier to carrier.

Additionally, they are often flatpack and foldable so you can easily store them away when not in use.

Another reason is that they are more widely accepted among airlines. You’ll most likely be able to fit them on more airlines. Some airlines actually don’t allow hard-sided carriers.

Airline’s Carrier Requirements For Cabin Travel

Here are the ferret carrier requirements for the most pet-friendly airlines that allow ferrets in their cabins.

Many airlines have different requirements for soft crates and hard crates.

Additionally, it’s important to note that some airlines have different requirements for specific flight paths or aircrafts.

Thus, we recommend that you double check the requirements for your specific flight.

Travel Tips & Preparing Ferret Carriers

#1 familiarise your ferret with his/her carrier..

You want the flight to be as stress-free as possible for your ferret.

Try to purchase your carrier weeks before your flight, and your ferret get used to the carrier so that they feel a little at home in there.

Leading up to your trip, let your ferret play and sleep in the carrier.

Lure him/her into the carrier with plenty of treats, and fill it with their favourite toys and blankets.

Furthermore, you could even do some practice trips. Pop your ferret in his/her new carrier and go for a drive in your car, or take a walk to your local cafe for some lunch.

#2 Pack your ferret’s favourite blanket and a toy.

For the same reason as #1, to ensure your ferret feels as comfortable as possible in his/her carrier as possible.

#3 Line the bottom with an absorbant material.

The majority of airlines require that your ferret’s carrier is leak-proof and lined with an absorbant material.

Puppy training pads are perfect as they are highly efficient, lightweight and thin.

#4 Label your ferret’s carrier.

Attach a label including your ferret’s photo, name, your name, contact details and address.

This way, if your little friend was to go missing, then he/she can find their way back to you.

#5 Try to exhaust your ferret the day before travel.

A sleepy ferret will be less prone to getting stressed out.

Have some extra play sessions 24 hours leading up to your flight.

#6 Check the weather.

If you are travelling during hot weather, pack a few frozen water bottles with you. They can be used to cool the carrier down, and provide a drink.

On the other hand, if you’re flying during cold weather, pack a couple extra blankets to ensure your ferret doesn’t get chilly.

#7 Pack extra food and water.

Pack some extra food and water, in case your flight is delayed. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The best ferret carriers have storage pockets, so you can pop them in there.

Ferret owners who are flying with their furry friends want the journey to be as stress-free as possible, for you and your ferret!

Traveling With Ferrets Complete Guide For A Ferret Road Trip

Do you plan to travel with your ferret?

What do you need for a road trip?

Today I will share with you tips and advice about traveling with a ferret. That is not an impossible task, but it is a good idea to organize the entire trip a day or two before the real deal. So, what do you need for it, where can you go, and how to prepare your ferret for it you can read right here!

Can Your Ferret Travel In A Car?

Yes, ferrets can travel with you in a car just like with any other pet. Most ferrets don’t mind traveling, but that doesn’t mean you can simply place a ferret in transportation and put it in the car. There are a few things you can do to make the road trip more comfortable for you, your family, and your ferret.

What To Do Before Going On A Road Trip?

There are a few steps you can take before traveling that will keep you relaxed during the entire road trip. Those steps are connected to the ferret, the equipment you need, and the papers you have to gather for a safe and stress-free adventure.

Visit The Vet With Your Ferret

First thing first, make sure your ferret is healthy . Observe your ferret and make sure he acts like before, with the same energy level, with a good poop, and a healthy appetite. Ferrets can get sick and you don’t want to experience that in a different city or even country.

It is a good idea to visit the vet and get official proof that you have a healthy ferret. While you are at the vet, you can ask for a ferret flea medicine that will protect your ferret from nasty fleas and other pests.

Gather The Necessary Documentation

If you are going out of state, make sure you have all the vaccination in check. Most pets, including ferrets, aren’t allowed to cross the border without rabies vaccination so make sure you have one. Also, if your ferret has a microchip, bring those papers too. Everything related to your ferret and his registration at your veterinarian should come with you on every road trip you and your ferret take.

Make Sure Ferrets Are Legal On Your Destination

Ferrets are considered exotic pets which means there are cities and states that don’t allow them. It doesn’t matter whether you are traveling through the country or you are staying there, you have to check the ferret legality issue before going on a trip.

A good place to start with it is my post about Ferret legal states and after that, read the laws and regulations of each country you are visiting.

Prepare The Ferret First Aid Kit

A ferret first aid kit is a box with medicine and other equipment that can help you take care of a sick or injured ferret. That box can also have emergency contact numbers and it is a very smart move to put it in the car with you. If you don’t have the first aid kit, you can easily make one. If your ferret needs to take some medications, make sure you bring them with you. You can’t risk rushing to the unknown veterinarian in an unknown town simply because you didn’t think your ferret will need the medicine.

Equipment For Ferret Travel

Besides a checkup and papers, you will need to prepare other ferret equipment too. You have to find something to put your ferret in, something for him to eat and drink, and many other small items. Let’s check them out and start from the biggest.

Ferret Travel Cage

The most important accessory is the travel cage. It is important for it to be big enough for a ferret to be comfortable in. I recommend travel cages made of plastic with side doors made of metal. Those doors have a grid so your ferret will have fresh air and he will see what is going on around him.  Another one I would recommend comes with doors on top of the cage, also made of plastic. Plastic is good because it is easy to clean and it is budget-friendly.

What I wouldn’t recommend (especially for long trips) is a ferret backpack or a ferret carry bag. Both of them are mostly made of fabric so your ferret will probably make a mess inside (with food or poop and pee). If they are plastic, then your ferret will be very hot inside. Also, they tend to be on the smaller side which means that your ferret won’t feel comfortable after a certain amount of time.

If you have more than one ferret, it is a good idea to check dogs’ travel carriers. They are similar in design, but much bigger so your ferrets won’t feel crowded. But, make sure the grid on the doors is small enough so your ferret can’t escape between the holes.

Fill It With Ferret Hammocks

If you want to make your ferret comfortable, you have to fill the travel cage with hammocks. Most travel cages come with holes on each side so you can easily attach the ferret hammock and let it hang. Use only hammocks (not blankets) so your ferret won’t make them dirty.

Hammocks are elevated from the bottom and away from the mess your ferret can make inside. Also, it is far more comfortable to hang in the air than sleep on the bottom of the travel cage.

Prepare Food And Water Bowls

If you are going on a short trip (under an hour) then you don’t have to prepare food and water bowls, but make sure you have food and water with you in the car. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you are going on a long trip, attach both food and water bowls on one side of the travel cage.

If you aren’t sure which bowls to use, read my post about food and water bowls that can help you with the decision. I usually don’t recommend water bottles because it hurts ferret’s teeth, but if you are going on a trip once or twice a year, a good quality water bottle is OK, especially because it could make less mess in the transporter.

Bring Your Own Food And Water

If you are going somewhere, bring your ferret’s food with you. You don’t have to bring everything, but make sure your ferret has enough food for the entire time you are there. That way you won’t have to go around looking for that food brand and panicking if you can’t find it in any store.

Ok, you don’t have to bring the water for the entire vacation, but you have to bring water for the road trip. You never know what might happen during travel and having water with you is smart for you, your family, and your pet.

Bring The Litter Box

Ferrets poop often and this is another crucial part of the ferret travel equipment. Yoda is one of those ferrets that will poop inside the transporter roughly 10 minutes after I’ve put him inside. That is why I have to have a litter box in the transporter no matter how long (or short) my road trip will be.

Put the litter box all the way to the back of the transporter. Use the same holes in the transporter you used to attach the hammock and fix the litter box because your ferret will try to knock it over. Why? Because that is what ferrets do. That is the same reason why I don’t recommend puppy pads in the transporter. Ferrets will probably tuck it away or sleep on it and end up pooping or peeing on the floor.

Don’t Forget Harness And Leash

Going on a road trip means exploring and you know your ferret can’t wait for that. So, make sure you pack a harness and a leash so you can let your ferret explore the destination once you come there. The same story is with breaks during the trip. You need to stretch your legs so you can be sure your ferret needs it too.

Although having a harness and a leash is a very smart move, don’t put the harness on your ferret when he is in the travel cage. Once you take your ferret out of the cage, place the harness and leash on him and let him sniff the surroundings.

Traveling During Extreme Temperatures

It is not the same if you are traveling in the spring and autumn or during summer and winter. More extreme temperatures in summer and winter require a few steps more in your preparation. Average temperatures during spring and autumn won’t affect your ferret, but those during summer and winter can.

Traveling During Summer

Summer is the hottest season and although we love the heat, ferrets don’t. Ferrets are prone to heat strokes and every temperature above 26°C (85°F) is too hot for them. You can travel with your ferret during summer, just make sure you can cool him down.

Don’t be afraid to use air conditioning in your car, just don’t point it directly at your ferret. You can also cool your ferret with wet towels and a frozen water bottle you’ve put in the travel cage. Also, make sure you know how to recognize the signs of a ferret heatstroke so you can react in time if it happens.

Traveling During Winter

Traveling during winter is much less complicated than traveling during summer. Ferrets handle the cold much better than heat. But, that doesn’t mean you can leave it in a cold car while you go warm up. Bring your ferret with you.

I know that driving in a warm car is great, but make sure you don’t bring the temperature too high. Also, don’t put too many layers in the travel cage to keep your ferret warm. If you overdo it, you can give your ferret heat stroke, just like during high summer temperatures.

Ferrets are OK travel companions, as long as you give them everything they need. If a trip is long, make sure your ferret has enough food and water. Take breaks so you (and your ferret) can stretch legs. A car is the best way to travel with a ferret because you can stop if needed whenever you like. Did you travel with your ferret? American Airlines' pet policy: Here’s how to fly with your cat or dog

Flying with a pet can be complicated. Each airline has its own guidelines, and the devil is really in the details.

In this story, we'll cover the most important details you need to know about the American Airlines pet policy, including the American Airlines pet cargo policy.

American Airlines' pet policy

American Airlines only allows passengers to carry on cats and dogs; no other types of pets are allowed. According to the American Airlines pet policy , you can bring a cat or dog along (assuming they meet the size and age requirements) on most flights up to 12 hours or flights to or from the following locations:

• The 48 contiguous United States.
• The United States and Canada.
• Puerto Rico.
• St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
• St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

American Airlines charges a $125 charge for each one-way itinerary where your pet accompanies you in the cabin. You'll also incur an additional $125 charge on any one-way itinerary within the U.S. with more than a four-hour voluntary stopover. You might be able to recoup some or all of the fees if you charge it on a credit card that offers airline fee credits .

Additionally, the American Airlines pet policy prohibits pets from traveling in first or business class on the following aircraft types:

You'll want to make sure you book your pet early as part of your reservation. Unlike the United Airlines pet policy , American Airlines publishes the number of pets allowed in the cabin on each flight. So, we know American Airlines only allows up to seven kennels on its mainline flights (although service animals don't count toward this limit).

Meanwhile, American will only accept five kennels per flight — and a maximum of one carrier in first class — for American Eagle flights. While American has largely eliminated change fees , you'll be stuck rescheduling your trip if your particular flight has already reached its cap for in-cabin animals.

Lastly, American Airlines considers a pet carrier a carry-on item. So, if you're bringing along a pet, you'll only be permitted a personal item along with your pet carrier. Any other bags will need to be checked, with the appropriate fees applied.

American Airlines' pet carrier requirements

The American Airlines pet policy allows for both hard-sided and soft-sided carriers. Hard-sided carriers have different size restrictions based on whether your flight is on American Airlines or American Eagle, American's regional carrier.

Hard-sided kennels can be no larger than 19 inches by 13 inches by 9 inches on mainline flights and no larger than 16 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches on American Eagle flights. However, the American Airlines pet policy recommends soft-sided carriers, which can be no larger than 18 inches by 11 inches by 11 inches on both mainline and American Eagle flights.

Lastly, the American pet policy states that the animal must be able to stand up and turn around in the pet carrier .

American Airlines is launching a new nonstop flight from Phoenix.

The largest carrier at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announced plans to fly a once-daily route to Provo, Utah, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, starting in October 2024.

American will also offer twice-daily flights to Provo from Dallas-Fort Worth. The announcements bring daily, year-round service to Provo Airport for the first time. In a statement, Provo Airport Director Brian Torgersen described Phoenix as an "exceptional major hub."

American Airlines' Phoenix-Provo flights will begin Oct. 7 on the Bombardier CRJ-700 airplane, which seats 65 passengers including nine in first class.

Phoenix-Provo flights will depart from Sky Harbor at 12:15 p.m. Arizona time. Provo-Phoenix flights will depart at 3:28 p.m. Mountain time.

American will be the third airline in metro Phoenix to offer service to Provo. Allegiant Air flies there from both Sky Harbor and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in east Mesa, and Phoenix-Provo was one of Breeze Airways' first routes out of Sky Harbor .

American Airlines debuts DFW to Provo flights just weeks after Breeze Airways

American Airlines is debuting some flights to Provo, Utah, just a little over two weeks after upstart budget carrier Breeze Airways announced its plans.

Beginning Oct. 7, Fort Worth-based American will be flying three daily flights, two to DFW International Airport and one to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Bombardier CRJ700 planes with room for 65 passengers, nine in first class.

“We are thrilled to offer service to Provo for the first time starting this fall,” said Joe Sottile, director of domestic network planning at American. “This new year-round service will offer convenient connections to destinations across the United States and the world on our comprehensive global network, giving local residents more ways to visit the places they want to visit most.”

Meanwhile, on June 7, Breeze Airways will begin flying twice-weekly service on a new route on Mondays and Fridays out of DFW Airport . The airline uses smaller airports to connect to bigger destinations. Breeze is a fairly new airline which began operations in May 2021. It was created by JetBlue Airways founder David Neeleman.

Provo is about an hour south of Salt Lake City and home to Brigham Young University, which joined the Big 12 for the beginning of the 2023 football season , meaning the Cougars will be playing games regularly against Baylor and TCU, along with competition against other Texas schools such as the University of Houston and Texas Tech.

Tickets for American’s new flights will be available beginning April 22. Provo will be American’s third destination in Utah after Salt Lake City and St. George.

“We had a forward-looking vision when we built the Provo Airport,” said Michelle Kaufusi, mayor of Provo in a statement. “The monumental announcement of the arrival of American Airlines proves we were on their radar as much as our airport tower will soon be on theirs.”
