Penn State Lion Life

The penn state student experience as told by undergraduate admissions bloggers., 9 places to see on your first psu visit.

September 28, 2016 by Alexandra Maniglia Leave a Comment

Your first time on campus is such an exciting time. There are so many things to see, and your trip can only last so long (but don’t worry, you will have four more years here). That being said,  it’s important to make sure you visit some of the key places to get the ultimate Penn State experience!

penn state tour times

  • Hands down, if you’re only able to visit one place on campus, you should make sure to visit the HUB. The HUB is pretty much the center of all things Penn State. There’s the Penn State Bookstore, the THON store, a state of the art radio station, and honestly anything you could imagine.  If you can avoid going around lunch time, you’ll be able to see all of the hustle and bustle of campus, without the huge lunch rush.

2. Pollock, Findlay, Waring, and South Commons

  • The dining halls, affectionately known as the commons, are where students living both on campus and off can come to study, grab food, or even play ping pong. These commons will most likely become your go-to dinner spots when you come to Penn State.

3. The Arboretum

penn state tour times

  • If you plan on visiting the Creamery, the Arboretum is a must see while you’re on that side of campus. The Arboretum is full of incredible scenery and waterfalls alike. Nothing beats going there on a beautiful day!

4. Your Potential College’s Home Building

penn state tour times

  • Visiting your college’s home building is a great thing to do if you’re able! Your college’s home building typically is where the college’s dean, professors and advising team are located. It’s a great idea to get acquainted with this building since you’ll most likely frequent it!

5. The Lion Shrine

penn state tour times

  • If you’re on campus, you might as well take a picture to commemorate your exciting day! The Lion Shrine honors our beloved mascot, the Nittany Lion, and is a must-see while you’re exploring campus!

6. The Pattee and Paterno Libraries

  • The library is probably my favorite place on campus, and there’s an endless amount of new rooms to explore each time you walk through its halls. Not only are there some interesting rooms, there’s a cafe called McKinnon’s located in the basement, which is the perfect way to get you through your future study sessions!

7. McLanahans

  • McLanahans is packed on game day, so if you’re looking to see where you can get some Penn State attire, unique gifts for your friends and snacks, this is the place to be!

8. The Corner Room

  • The Corner Room is another Penn State staple. Located on Allen Street, this is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, or watch a snowstorm cover happy valley!

9. The Berkey Creamery

  • Who doesn’t love ice cream? I might be biased, but I’m pretty sure the creamery has some of the greatest ice cream on the planet. It’s the perfect way to treat yourself after your day of exploring campus!

We can’t wait for you to come visit our home away from home!

Explore University Park

Welcome to Penn State University Park! As a transfer or change-of-campus student, you will be a new member of our University Park community in the fall. To help ensure you have the information you need to know before you arrive on campus, we are hosting virtual orientation opportunities throughout the summer—you can find more information about virtual orientation in your tasklist. Because we know you may want to visit University Park this summer in addition to attending your virtual orientation, we have created this website to help you plan your trip. You can use this website to customize a self-guided experience to explore the University Park campus before you arrive in the fall.

We’ve designed this webpage to help you plan for your visit to the University Park campus. Please note that these visits are optional, and at your own leisure. Because some offices and buildings may have different hours in the summer, we encourage you to reach out to any individuals you plan to meet with ahead of time to coordinate a meeting. Please do not expect that all offices and buildings will be open.

You can get started by clicking through the menu below.

Download Penn State Go on your mobile device: Penn State Go is an all-in-one mobile app that provides a custom campus experience for students. With GPS integration, this will also be one of the tools you use to navigate campus upon arrival. (Download here: mobile.psu.edu )

Plan Your Route: Don’t think of this visit as a campus tour, but rather, a self-guided expedition of Penn State University Park. Visit map.psu.edu and use the menu on the left to filter through the locations available on the map. This is a great opportunity to visit Points of Pride (landmark buildings), Academic and Administrative buildings (including the location of student service offices and classrooms), and to just see the campus. We’ve included instructions on using this feature below in the “during your visit” section of this page.

Customize Your Experience: You may have specific people you want to meet or places you want to visit. If so, be sure to reach out with plenty of time in advance to coordinate a meeting. Please note that not all individuals or resources will be able to accommodate a meeting request. If you aren’t sure who to see while you’re on campus, here are some options to consider:

Meet with an academic adviser from your college. If you have questions about your fall schedule or academic opportunities within your college, connecting with an adviser may be helpful. To view your new assigned academic adviser in your college, select “My Advisers” on the homepage of your LionPATH. If you do not have a new adviser in LionPATH yet, you can reach out to your college’s change-of-campus contact listed on this website (scroll halfway down the page to find the list of University Park colleges).

Discuss your education-related finances with Student Aid. You may have questions about your financial aid, scholarship opportunities, or work study, and the Student Aid office can help. You can find their contact information on their website .

Connect with the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC). The MRC supports students from diverse backgrounds and works to foster their success. Contact the MRC to meet with a counselor and understand the identity-based resources available to you.

Meet with Student Disability Resources. If you received academic accommodations previously or would like to consider utilizing accommodations, discuss your needs with the Student Disability Resources staff; find their contact information here .

Plan for your future with Career Services. Now is a great time to meet with Career Services to discuss your post-college goals and develop a plan to achieve them. View Career Services’ offerings and contact information here .

Meet with Housing . If you are living on campus in the fall, the Housing website has a wealth of information you need to know, and information specific for change-of-campus students  and transfer students . You can also reach out with questions or to find a time to meet.

Learn how Off-Campus Student Support can help . Living off campus? The office of Off-Campus Student Support has resources and people who can help you navigate that. Consider coordinating a meeting with them if you have questions about off-campus housing.

Be Flexible: As you plan for your visit, we ask that you plan with a bit of flexibility. This includes confirming the hours of operation for your intended stops during your visit to University Park.

Dress Appropriately: The University Park campus and State College are walkable communities. You should be prepared to spend a lot of time outside during your visit!  You can plan for this by keeping an eye on the weather in the days leading up to your visit, but also plan for quickly changing weather conditions. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and pack an umbrella or raincoat.

Parking at University Park: You will be required to have a visitor parking pass while parked on campus. Parking in the Stadium West lot costs $5 per day. To pay for parking, you can use the Park Mobile app or the physical paystation in the lot. This website provides more information on parking while visiting campus. Pro tip: From the Stadium West lot, we recommend starting with either Beaver Stadium, the Bryce Jordan Center, or head down Curtin Rd into the heart of campus with a quick stop at the We Are Statue and then to the Berkey Creamery.

Begin Your Journey: Welcome! Now that you’ve arrived, it’s time to explore campus. We recommend using features located in the Penn State Go app. Follow the steps below to access the map and apply filters (or search a specific location) to set up walking directions to your first destination.

To create your own experience:

Open Penn State Go (download here: mobile.psu.edu )

Select the “maps” icon

Allow the website “map.psu.edu” to use your location

To search a destination, select the magnifying glass in the upper right corner

To activate filters, select the menu button in the upper left corner.

You can filter by Pride Points, Academic & Administration, Dining, Campus Housing, and more.

Once you select your category and find a location you would like to venture to, select the navigate icon to generate walking directions

Repeat steps 3-5, to select and navigate through your desired campus spots.

To generate a pre-made campus walking tour:

Select the menu button in the upper left corner.

Tap “tours” listed to the right of “Locations.”

Select the “Campus Walking Tour.”

At each location, tap up arrow next to the name of the destination at the bottom of the screen to read more information.

Be Prepared for Classes: Exploring University Park before your classes start provides you with a great opportunity to map out your route between your scheduled classes. If you have already scheduled your fall semester classes, pull up your class schedule in LionPATH and use the Penn State Go map to search your classroom locations and walk your route. Keep your eyes open for nice study spots.

Get Social: We’d love to know that you’re visiting campus and see your photos!  Use our hashtag (#psusummer) and tag our Instagram @PennStateSOTP.

Engineering Student Tours and Resources

Established in 2020, the Engineering Student Tours and Resources (ESTAR) group offers walking campus tours for prospective engineering students and their families. ESTAR members lead visits through key Penn State and College of Engineering facilities, sharing information about life on campus and specifically about their experience in the college. Current students from all engineering majors are encouraged to apply for ESTAR.

Tour Information

ESTAR tours happen rain or shine! Please dress accordingly. In the event of a severe weather warning or campus closure, tours are canceled for the safety of our guests and students.

On an ESTAR tour, you will be led around Penn State University Park by one or two current Penn State engineering students for approximately a one-mile walking journey. Along the way, you will see some highlights of campus, like the HUB-Robeson Center and Old Main . The main attractions of the tour, though, are the engineering facilities.

Some locations you will see are:

  • Kunkle Lounge, a popular event and study space for engineering students
  • The Engineering Library , a great resource for learning
  • Engineering design classrooms, computer labs, and workshops
  • The E-Knowledge Commons , a collaboration space
  • The Knowledge Lab , a multidisciplinary maker space and classroom
  • General classrooms and research labs

We are excited to soon be able to share with you our new buildings on the west side of campus.

ESTAR tour guides share information about engineering majors, the first-year experience, and various opportunities for involvement like student organizations , research , internships and co-ops , study abroad , and outreach and inclusion programs . Most importantly, the ESTARs share their own experiences and stories of their time at Penn State.

We can make accommodations for accessibility on the tour route. Please send us an email at [email protected] so that we can discuss your accessibility needs.

Pa. House answers county election officials’ request for more time to count mail-in ballots

A bill passed along party lines wednesday would allow ballots to be opened but not counted up to a week before polls close, by: peter hall - may 1, 2024 5:32 pm.

With all eyes turned to Pennsylvania for the 2024 presidential election, county election workers would be able to start processing mail-in ballots up to a week before Election Day under legislation that passed the state House on Wednesday.

Republicans, who supported early processing of mail-in ballots in past election reform measures, opposed the bill passed Wednesday in a 102-99 party-line vote. The bill now goes to the GOP-controlled state Senate for consideration.

House Bill 847 extends the period in which county election officials may open and electronically scan vote-by-mail ballots, which currently begins at 7 a.m. on Election Day. State Rep. Scott Conklin (D-Centre), the bill’s prime sponsor, said the legislation was requested by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania.

“Here’s what they said: Pre-canvassing is the most important change that would significantly improve the election experience. For both counties and voters without sacrificing … ballot security,” Conklin said.

The bill would allow election workers to open the secrecy envelopes containing mail-in ballots and scan the ballots up to seven days before Election Day. Tabulation of the results from mail-in ballots would not be performed until after polls close and the process would be witnessed by representatives of each candidate and each party.

Observers and participants in the process would be barred from disclosing the results before in-person voting has concluded, although lawmakers who opposed the bill noted that it carries no penalty for doing so.

While voting by mail has been an option for decades for people who are away from home or otherwise can’t make it to the polls on Election Day via absentee ballots, Act 77 made voting by mail an option for any qualified voter without an excuse for the first time in 2020.

That year, delays counting mail-in ballots meant that the winner of Pennsylvania’s presidential election was uncertain for days after polls closed. That provided grist for conspiracy theorists who echoed former President Donald Trump’s false claims that he had only lost the welection because of ballot fraud.

“This will not change the election, Pennsylvania will be standing as a shining star because they will know that conspiracy theories that come out will not work. So I’m asking you for a yes vote,” Conklin said.

Gov. Josh Shapiro posted on X , the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Wednesday that he was pleased that the House had acted on the requests of Republican and Democratic county election officials.

“I hope the Senate will follow suit and send this simple, bipartisan reform to improve our elections to my desk so I can sign it into law,” the tweet said.

Shapiro’s administration also oversaw the redesign of mail-in ballots for the 2024 election, intended to reduce confusion among voters who have written the wrong dates on return envelopes or omitted the date altogether.

Pennsylvania redesigns its mail-in ballots for the 2024 election

A sweeping election reform bill backed by Republican lawmakers that passed both chambers of the Legislature in 2021 included additional time to prepare to mail-in ballots for counting. Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed the bill because it also required voters to show ID every time they vote, which Wolf said would restrict freedom to vote.

House Minority Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) said that the pre-canvassing bill under consideration Wednesday would compound the problems election workers face during the transition from election preparation to Election Day by making them overlap. Cutler also noted that counties across the state have experienced other election problems that require attention.

Cutler cited incorrectly prepared touch screen voting machines in Northampton County in 2023  and polling places that ran out of paper for voting machines in Luzerne County in 2022, among others.

“These are the real problems that voters have called me about and I think that they’ve been well publicized … I think that Pennsylvanians have said consistently, they want to restore trust and faith in our election systems,” Cutler said, adding that other election reform measures such as voter ID and pollbook signature matching have similar support as early canvassing.

Urging support for the bill, Majority Leader Matt Bradford (D-Montgomery) recalled the “horrible months” after the 2020 election, when members of the Pennsylvania Legislature proposed “bogus audits” of the results, amplified false claims that voting machines were rigged and the horror of the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.

“The idea that pre-canvassing is a Democrat or Republican issue is shameless,” Bradford said. “This is simply about giving people timely results in an election so we don’t have what we had in 2020 — the mindless conspiracies, the election denialism.”
