A History of Amman

Amman was originally built on seven hills but has since covered the span of nineteen hills, divided into 27 zones. Each zone is named after the hill (jabal) or valley (wadi) that it lies on. Every zone has its own character and is home to diverse architecture, culture, and history.

Amman sits on the eastern side of the Jordan River – geographically similar to Jerusalem which sits on the ‘Western Bank’ of the Jordan River – and shares a similar climate as well. The overall atmosphere is bustling and presents brilliant views as it sits between the Judean Desert, and the northern part of the Dead Sea .

Eastern Amman is the historic side of the city featuring the famous Citadel and Roman Amphitheater . ‘Downtown Amman’ or ‘Jabal Amman’ is now dwarfed by the west of the city as a commercial center, but still houses the city’s largest souqs, museums, and cultural sites.

Western Amman is the new part of Amman, a more western style experience which in parts resembles Dubai. As a result, this part of the city has a large number of westerners and expats, and western style malls, restaurants , and hotels .

Visiting Amman

Visiting Amman is an easy experience for a western traveler, as much of the city is geared towards visitors and English is widely spoken. The city’s main historic attractions include the Citadel, Roman Amphitheater, Jordan Museum, and Downtown (Balad) with Arab souqs, shops, and local specialties. Amman has a great array of hotels, from luxury five-star properties to budget hotels and hostels.

Amman’s Queen Alia Airport is around 30 minutes south of the city by road, accessed via shuttle bus or car. It is a growing regional airport with connections to Europe, the Middle East, and a small number of flights bound for North America and the Far East.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour price does not include entrance fees to the sites visited on the tour. We strongly recommend that you purchase a Jordan Pass prior to your travel to Jordan. This is a special package that has been designed by the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for tourists visiting Jordan. As well as including a discounted package of entrance fees covering all the sites in Jordan that you will visit on this tour (plus many others), the Jordan Pass also provides free downloadable digital brochures on each attraction, plus a free tourist visa for entering the country (40JD if obtained on arrival in Jordan). The cost for the Jordan Wanderer Pass suitable for this tour is JD70 (approx. US$99). Passes are available by completing a simple online form before you travel, taking care to make sure your passport details are entered correctly as this doubles as your visa application. Your Jordan Pass will then be emailed to you as a pdf document, which you should print out and bring with you. You will then need to show this print out at the immigration desk on arrival in Jordan to obtain your free entry visa, and also at each attraction where it will be scanned to confirm your entry.

You can arrive anytime day 1, but please note that the check-in at the hotel can be made starting with 2pm.

We wouldn’t really recommend leaving your suitcase in Amman, as we can’t guarantee we’ll use the same hotel at the end of the tour.

The tour operator doesn’t offer a day trip to Wadi Mujib from Amman, but if you’d like to book your own day trip for one of the days that would be absolutely fine.

The hotel we normally use in Amman is the Al Waleed Hotel, however we don’t guarantee specific hotels on our group tours (though we use this property maybe 95% of the time on this tour). If you’d like to add an extra night post-tour then it would be for an additional cost per person for the night and this would still include the airport transfers.

It wouldn't be a problem for you to arrive earlier, however you may be a little tired for the sightseeing that day due to the early arrival. The airport transfer will still be included and you'll have a little time to freshen up at the hotel before the sightseeing begins - normally around 8.30am.

If you wanted to take a tour of Amman at the end of the tour we can certainly arrange this for you, however private guiding services in Jordan are normally quite expensive so you may find it easier to take a taxi to downtown Amman and walk to the Amphitheatre and Citadel (not far from one another).

Yes, you can have your own private double room for the duration of this tour. Please contact to arrange this.

It wouldn't be a problem for you to arrive into Amman a day later than the start date, however this is the day when we normally visit the Dead Sea and Jerash, so unless you'll be arriving very early in the morning ( before 7am) it would result in you missing this day trip as it normally begins at around 08:30.

We would be able to provide a supplement for a night in the Wadi Rum, with a transfer to Amman for the final day.

As a traveller from USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand you will need an adaptor for types C, E, F, D, M, J, G. As a traveller from England you will need an adaptor for types C, E, F, D, M, J. As a traveller from South Africa you will need an adaptor for types C, E, F, J, G.

• These are only indications, so please visit your doctor before you travel to be 100% sure.
• Typhoid - Recommended for Jordan. Ideally 2 weeks before travel.
• Hepatitis A - Recommended for Jordan. Ideally 2 weeks before travel.
• Hepatitis B - Recommended for Jordan. Ideally 2 months before travel.
• Rabies - Recommended for Jordan. Ideally 1 month before travel.
• Yellow fever - Certificate of vaccination required if arriving from an area with a risk of yellow fever transmission for Jordan. Ideally 10 days before travel.
• Unfortunately we cannot offer you a visa application service. Whether you need a visa or not depends on your nationality and where you wish to travel. Assuming your home country does not have a visa agreement with the country you're planning to visit, you will need to apply for a visa in advance of your scheduled departure.
• Here is an indication for which countries you might need a visa. Please contact the local embassy for help applying for visas to these places.
• For any tour departing before June 23rd, 2024 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after June 23rd, 2024, a minimum payment of £150 is required to confirm your booking with Encounters Travel. The final payment will be automatically charged to your credit card on the designated due date. The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 60 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
