LIVE REVIEW: Arcade Fire Come Alive At Boston’s Blue Hills Bank Pavilion

by Candace McDuffie | Jul 21, 2018 | Concerts & Festivals

The debut album from Canadian facet Arcade Fire, Funeral , was released 14 years ago and instantly became a classic. Prismatic harmonies and wildly outfitted vocal arrangements pushed the band to the very forefront of indie-rock that saturated the early aughts; “Wake Up” was a galvanizing and sweeping anthem while “Rebellion (Lies)” kept this momentum going but was more agile and danceable in nature. Their follow up to Funeral , 2007’s Neon Bible , switched up their lauded formula and heightened their levels of both intimacy and experimentation. “Keep The Car Running” is the audible equivalent of loneliness festering and the title track is as restless and murky as the project itself. 2010’s The Suburbs felt revenant and revolutionary with its not so subtle attacks on capitalism, war and classism.

Three years later, Reflektor received the same critical acclaim as the rest of the albums in Arcade Fire’s discography and last year they released Everything Now (which became their third US number one album). They revitalized the success of that record with the Everything Now Continued tour that started earlier this month and made a stop at Boston’s Blue Hills Bank Pavilion this past Wednesday (July 18th). Just like all five of their albums, a performance by Arcade Fire is full of juxtapositions. They are dazzling yet exhausting, beautiful yet brooding, plain yet grandiose. From the very beginning of their set, every inch of the stage was saturated with an array of band members playing an array of instruments without it feeling cluttered or bombastic–it just felt whole. It was invigorating to see them all hit the ground running. “Wake Up” was a spare and vicious opener and was quickly followed by “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out).”

Win Butler’s savvy stylistic blend of stoic frontman with avant-garde emotionalism kept concert-goers on edge the entire evening. He was unnerving during “Rococo” and willingly stepped aside to let fellow vocalist and wife Régine Chassagne stand front and center during “Electric Blue.” His visceral appeal returned for “Put Your Money On Me,” “My Body Is a Cage” and “We Used to Wait.” But his vigor took flight on “Ready to Start” and soared the rest of evening as he made his way off stage and into the audience to serenade us. “Rebellion (Lies)” was the final song of Arcade Fire’s set and was enthralling and electrifying as Butler himself and served as a reminder for why fans come out in droves to see them: to simply feel alive.

A rcade Fire , the celebrated Canadian rock band that last week unveiled the first songs from its much anticipated album “The Suburbs,” has announced a brief U.S. tour to coincide with the release. Between Aug. 1-11, the band will play headlining shows in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Columbia, Md., Nashville and Atlanta, in addition to its previously announced appearance at the Lollapaloooza Festival in Chicago. “The Suburbs,” Arcade Fire’s third full-length, is due Aug. 3 on Merge.

Spoon will support on the New York, Philadelphia, DC and Atlanta dates.

Arcade Fire will mark its return to the stage next week (June 7-8) with a pair of intimate gigs at Sherbrooke ONT’s Theater Granada.

“The Suburbs” is Arcade Fire’s follow-up to “Neon Bible,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in March 2007 and has sold 421,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Trending on Billboard

The band has been working on the album for more than six months with producer Markus Dravs, who also helmed “Neon Bible.” There has been speculation that Owen Pallett, the Polaris Prize-winning creative force behind Final Fantasy, has been working on the album’s arrangements. He previously arranged strings for Arcade Fire, and fueled rumors by recently cryptically posting on Twitter that he had “just completed 10 days on the best album I’ve ever had the pleasure of working on.”

Here are Arcade Fire’s U.S. tour dates:

Aug. 1: Boston (Bank of America Pavilion) Aug. 2: Philadelphia (Mann Center for the Performing Arts) Aug. 4: New York (Madison Square Garden) Aug. 6: Columbia MD (Merriweather Post Pavilion) Aug. 9: Nashville (Ryman Auditorium) Aug. 11: Atlanta (Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park)

Arcade Fire 2022 World Tour Tickets $60+

The Canadian indie rock group, which is helmed by married couple Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, released their critically acclaimed sixth studio album, WE, on May 6, 2022. The record—the bulk of which was written before 2020—marks their last album featuring bandmember Will Butler before his departure from the band in 2021. “I left at the end of last year, after the new record was complete,” he tweeted in 2022. “There was no acute reason beyond that I’ve changed—and the band has changed—over the last almost 20 years. Time for new things.”

Click here to read the full article.

Will’s older brother and former bandmate, Win, addressed his amicable exit from the band during an interview with NME published in May 2022. “He’s our family and everyone in the band’s family, and he’s such a brilliant guy—he has so many things that just aren’t this band.” He added, “And on a human level, he’s got three young children, he just has so much other stuff to do. We’re fully supportive of his path, and can’t wait to see it.”

During their interview with NME, Arcade Fire bandleaders Win and Régine also opened up about their process behind making the new album. “I think when we were making these songs, we weren’t sure what world we were making it for,” Win shared. “There’s so many precarious things in the world and so much to have anxiety about, but I’ve been trying to really appreciate these moments when I’m in them. When the world is a beautiful place, I’m trying to allow myself to appreciate it in a way that I wouldn’t have before.”

For fans of Arcade Fire, there is perhaps no better moment to appreciate than getting to see the band live in concert. Of course, you’ll have to have tickets first! Arcade Fire Announces 2022 Tour Dates In Support Of Their New Album, ‘We’

Derrick Rossignol

Arcade Fire has one of the week’s defining releases with We , their new album that’s out now. While fresh tunes would have been enough good news, the band offers more today, as they’ve announced a run of 2022 tour dates for the latter half of the year.

The trek starts with a European tour between late August and early October, bringing them to Ireland, the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Poland. Feist will support on these shows.

After a few weeks off, the band will then start a North American tour, which runs between late October and early December. They’ll perform in Washington DC, New Jersey, Brooklyn, Boston, Connecticut, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto. Beck is set to open those concerts with an acoustic set.

arcade fire opening act drops out exit

Arcade Fire is having trouble keeping name acts in the opening slots for its arena tours. Beck has now dropped out of his position as the opener for the group’s U.S. tour, without any explanation so far.

In an email sent to ticket buyers, Beck was described only as “unfortunately no longer able to join Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour. Taking his place will be Boukman Eksperyans,” described as a Grammy-nominated Haitian roots band.

Contacted by Variety , Beck’s reps declined to comment on his bowing out.

Popular on Variety

“Him opening was a large part of the reason I shelled out for excellent seats,” said one user in a Reddit thread about Beck dropping out. “I couldn’t be less interested in his replacement. This is what I get for jumping on tickets day 1. People are gonna be able to score em on the resale market for like $40.”

Beck was slated to performing acoustically and not doing the kind of full band set he would as a headliner, however.

As this article was being published, the dates remained listed on Beck’s website, showing him starting the Arcade Fire tour Oct. 27 in Washington, D.C., and continuing for 18 concerts with the group, wrapping up Dec. 1 in Toronto. Gigs affected along the way include a Nov. 4 show at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and a two-night stand at L.A.’s Kia Forum Nov. 16-17. Six of the shows are listed as sellouts.

Feist continued, “I’m imperfect and I will navigate this decision imperfectly, but what I’m sure of is the best way to take care of my band and crew and my family is to distance myself from this tour, not this conversation. The last two nights on stage, my songs made this decision for me. Hearing them through this lens was incongruous with what I’ve worked to clarify for myself through my whole career . .. This has been incredibly difficult for me and I can only imagine how much more difficult it’s been for the people who came forward (with their experiences with Butler). More than anything! Wish healing to those involved.”

In the  Pitchfork article, which opened up a chasm between Arcade Fire fans who stood behind Butler and those who felt they no longer could, the band leader was accused of sexual misconduct by four people. Three women alleged encounters that were “inappropriate given the gaps in age, power dynamics, and context in which they occurred,” while a fourth person, who is gender-fluid, alleged that Butler sexually assaulted them twice in 2015.

In response, Butler issued a statement saying that all of the encounters with the individuals in the article were consensual, while acknowledging “poor judgment, and mistakes I have made. … Every single one of these interactions has been mutual and always between consenting adults. It is deeply revisionist, and frankly just wrong, for anyone to suggest otherwise. … I fucked up, and while not an excuse, I will continue to look forward and heal what can be healed, and learn from past experiences. I can do better and I will do better.”

Beck’s most recent appearance was a surprise solo-acoustic set at L.A.’s Largo this week, appearing at a Judd Apatow-hosted benefit with Loudon Wainwright III, Christopher Guest and Michael McKean.

Arcade Fire have announced a second ‘Funeral’ 20th-anniversary show at London’s Brixton Academy.

  • READ MORE:  Arcade Fire’s ‘Funeral’ at 15: the album that killed indie rock as we knew it

The additional London date was added “Due to demand” and will take place on Friday July 5 at the famous venue. Tickets will go on general sale tomorrow (April 19) at 10am local time. Visit here to purchase tickets .

The announcement of the new London date comes three days after the band – comprised of frontman Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara – revealed that they will be playing at Brixton’s O2 Academy in London on July 4. Warmduscher will be serving as opening support for both nights.

EXTRA DATE ADDED: Due to demand, @arcadefire will play a second show at London's @o2academybrix this summer 🙌 Snap up tickets tomorrow at 10am 👉 https://t.co/G64a4jeVyR pic.twitter.com/jenAxLo4A8 — Live Nation UK (@LiveNationUK) April 18, 2024

Arcade Fire ‘Funeral’ 20th anniversary tour dates are:

JULY  2 – Rho, Italy, Fiera Milano 4 – London, UK, O2 Academy Brixton 5 – London, UK, O2 Academy Brixton 7 – Dublin, Ireland, The Malahide Castle

The newly announced date is the latest gig to be shared after Arcade Fire revealed that they would be  playing “a limited number” of shows in celebration of their seminal 2004 debut LP .

Arcade Fire’s gig at Brixton Academy comes  after the venue’s reopening since closing its doors  in  December 2022 after a fatal crowd crush  that left two people dead.

Recommended

Back in February, the band shared two separate invitation posts that read: “Save the date. Arcade Fire invite you to attend a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of their debut album ‘Funeral’”. The caption of the posts read: “We will be playing a limited number of special concerts, and we would be honoured if you would join us. Black tie optional; should be real fun.”

The first two dates to be revealed were July 2 at the Fiera Milano in Rho, Italy and July 7 at the Malahide Castle in Dublin, Ireland.  Echo And The Bunnymen  were also announced as special guests for the Ireland date with more to been shared soon.

Arcade Fire released ‘Funeral’ on September 14, 2004 via Merge Records. In 2005, the LP earned a Grammy nomination in the category for  Best Alternative Music Album. Since its release, ‘Funeral’ has received widespread critical acclaim and has been considered one of the greatest albums of all time.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Arcade Fire (@arcadefire)

The band previously  played the album in full back in 2018 at their show in Los Angeles on September 20 . They treated fans to all 10 tracks – back-to-front – before diving into the rest of their 23 song setlist.

‘Funeral’ is one of many  classic 2004 albums which are turning 20 this year . Journalist Rhian Daly wrote: “[the album] was so called after many of the band’s members had suffered losses in their families, but out of grief came a new beginning. The record – a sprawling, epic, theatrical beauty – immediately won the group widespread acclaim, striking a chord with its cathartic and artful compositions.”

The band have been met with controversy in recent years. In August 22, frontman Win Butler  was accused of sexual misconduct and “inappropriate” behaviour by four people . Those actions ranged from sexual assault to sending unwanted explicit text messages and pursuing relationships with fans of the band much younger than him. The following November, a  fifth person came forward to accuse Butler  of “emotionally abusive, manipulative, toxic” behaviour towards them.

Butler has denied allegations of misconduct, saying he was “very sorry to anyone who I have hurt with my behaviour” but that all contact with his accusers was “consensual”.

In other news, Arcade Fire have announced a run of festival dates for summer 2024 and are  set to play this year’s edition of Bilbao BBK Live . Other acts set to perform at he festival include   Massive Attack ,  The Prodigy ,  Jungle ,  Overmono ,  Ezra Collective ,  Floating Points ,  Underworld ,  Noname ,  Khruangbin ,  JPEGMAFIA ,  Death From Above 1979 ,  Alvvays ,  Los Bitchos ,  Parcels and more.

Three mini lobster rolls on a black tray with lemon wedges on the side.

Sip cocktails, slurp oysters, and crash (virtual) cars at the Seaport’s new F1 Arcade , which opens to the public this week. The vibe is arcade, but make it luxury: The menu includes a full-on seafood tower ($119), caviar service ($180), and a trio of mini lobster rolls ($39) which can be eaten in between turns behind the wheel at one of the arcade’s 69 full-motion vehicle simulators. This F1 Arcade is the first U.S. location for the London-based company, but far from its last — the team plans to open 30 locations across the country by the end of 2027, according to a press release on the opening.

The lines at Bagelsaurus might get (a little) less daunting in May

Acclaimed Porter Square bagel shop Bagelsaurus has acquired the store next door and plans to expand its operation starting next month, according to Cambridge Day . The team will go from 1,000 square feet of space to 1,500 square feet to work with, which means they’ll be able to produce more bagels and streamline the customer ordering and pick-up flow, owner Mary Ting Hyatt told the publication. For anyone who has tried to get a Bagelsaurus sandwich on Saturday only to be met with a “sold out” sign before lunchtime, this is very good news indeed.

A high-profile Uyghur restaurant in Providence is coming to Cambridge

Providence’s buzzy Uyghur restaurant Jahunger, led by James Beard semifinalist Subat Dilmurat and his wife and co-owner, Nadira Parhat, is expanding to Cambridge, Boston Magazine reports . Expect many of the same dishes that are at Jahunger’s Providence shop — including the hand-pulled laghman noodles and the kavap, or marinated lamb skewers — plus some new treats like a whole roasted lamb and a few recipes that the team is bringing back from Jahunger’s early days. They are aiming to open in Cambridgeport in early May.

Goodbye, Vincent’s; hello, Mamaleh’s Kibitz Corner

Well, that was fast: Kendall Square neighborhood spot Vincent’s, which shut down at the end of February, has been transformed into Mamaleh’s Kibitz Corner, an events space and test kitchen that is opening its doors to the neighborhood this weekend. (Both Mamaleh’s and Vincent’s are owned by the same restaurant group.) The space will be available to book for private events (between 10-60 people), and the team also plans to host their own public-facing events in the space, starting with a two-night Passover celebration on April 26 and 27. Grab tickets here for the four-course dinner, which also includes a $36 meal option for the kiddos.
