Chennai Open 2024 tennis: Sumit Nagal wins fifth ATP Challenger Tour title

The Indian tennis player defeated top-seeded Luca Nardi in straight sets. Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni won the doubles title.

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal.

In the battle between the top two seeds, India’s Sumit Nagal got the better of Italy’s Luca Nardi in the Chennai Open 2024 singles final at the SDAT Tennis Stadium on Sunday.

Nagal, 121st in the tennis rankings , defeated world No. 114 and top seed Luca Nardi 6-1, 6-4 for the fifth ATP Challenger Tour title of his career and the first of this season.

Nagal won Challenger Tour titles in Tampere and Rome last year, in Buenos Aires in 2019 and clinched the Bengaluru Open title in 2017.

Despite grappling with a shoulder injury, Nagal moved swiftly on the court and secured a crucial break in the second game of the opening set.

The Indian tennis player managed to fend off two break points in the fifth game and followed it with his second break of the match in the sixth game, eventually claiming the first set in 38 minutes.

Nagal broke Nardi again in the third game of the second set. However, the 20-year-old Italian tennis player levelled the set in the sixth game.

Nagal and Nardi engaged in extended rallies in the next two games but could not hold their serves. The ninth game saw Nagal up the ante, executing a flawless break without conceding a point.

Serving for the match in the 10th game, Nagal was in a spot of bother trailing 40-15. However, he saved two game points and sealed the contest in one hour and 40 minutes.

Following his Chennai Open exploits, the 26-year-old Nagal is expected to break into the top 100 ATP rankings for the first time next week.

Sumit Nagal defeated world No. 186 Dalibor Svrcina of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 in his semi-final. He was ranked 138 at the start of the Australian Open 2024 but jumped 17 spots in the rankings after reaching the second round in the year’s first Grand Slam.

In the all-Indian doubles final in Chennai on Saturday, Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan defeated Rithvik Bollipalli and Niki Poonacha 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 via a super-tiebreaker to clinch the title.

Myneni and Ramanathan, who won the silver medal in the men’s doubles at the Asian Games last year, were broken in the eighth game of the first set but bounced back in the second set by breaking their opponents in their first service game.

The match went into the super-tiebreaker which Myneni and Ramanathan won with ease. Myneni and Ramanathan will also be seen together at the Bengaluru Open 2024 starting on Monday.

Diallo Into Doubles Final at Winnipeg Challenger

Gabriel Diallo pumps his fist.

Photo : Tyler Anderson

Gabriel Diallo arrived at the ATP Challenger event in Winnipeg on the heels of his first-ever match win on the ATP Tour in Toronto last week. While he did not manage to back it up in singles, the young Canadian is having a strong run in the Manitoba capital in doubles, finding himself in the title match.

In a quarter-final pitting two Canadians against each other, Diallo and his Swiss partner Leandro Riedi beat Kelsey Stevenson and Brit Billy Harris 6-2, 6-4. Diallo and Riedi then got a free pass to the final when Mattia Bellucci and his fellow Italian Luca Nardi announced they would withdraw from the semis.

The first doubles match of the day was a catch-up round of sixteen match between two all-Canadian pairs: Juan Carlos Aguilar and Taha Baadi against Cleeve Harper and Brayden Schnur. It was Aguilar and Baadi winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to move on to the quarter-finals later in the day, where they scored a second win against Thai-Son Kwiatowski and Chris Rodesch, this time a comeback 1-6, 6-2, [10-3] to reach the final four.

Top seeds Andrew Harris and Christian Harrison advanced in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-2 to round out the doubles semifinal lineup.

The semifinals will take place on Friday, with the finals being contested on Saturday.

Brits lead singles

Coming into quarter-final Friday at the ATP Winnipeg National Bank Challenger, it was the Brits stealing the spotlight with a chance to claim three of the four semifinal spots.

Great Britain was guaranteed at least one semifinalist with No. 4 seed Liam Broady meeting countryman Billy Harris in the first match of the day. The fourth seed broke serve four times and won 60 per cent of his second serve return points for a 7-6(5), 6-4 win.

Ryan Penniston had no trouble with Darian King of Barbados, needing just over an hour for a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

But top seed Jack Draper, who reached the quarter-final of the National Bank Open on the main tour in Canada last year, could not complete the big day for the Brits as he was upset by France’s Arthur Cazaux in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Riedi also advanced to the final four of the singles, defeating Bellucci in three sets. Bellucci had beaten Diallo in the second round.

The Tallahassee Tennis Challenger shifts into high gear as top seed falls in opener

The Tallahassee Tennis Challenger is underway at Forestmeadows.

The 2024 edition of the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger Presented by Visit Tallahassee shifted into high gear Monday.

Singles qualifying ended with Bogdan Bobrov, Bruno Kuzuhara, Andres Andrade, Corentin Denolly, Gerald Melzer and Victor Lilov advancing to the main draw.

In the first night feature match on Stadium Court, top seed, JJ Wolf found himself in a battle with the 2023 Wimbledon Boy’s Champ, Henry Searle.

Searle, a big soccer fan, fought like he was on the pitch. He saved break points and used his serve and forehand as a weapon to keep Wolf on his heels.

Wolf jumped back to even the second set and forced a tiebreaker, but it was Searle who played the big points the best in taking the 7-5, 7-6 (6) win.

“It gives me a lot of confidence going into the next round,” admitted Searle.

Proceeds from the tournament continue to benefit the Vogter Neuro-ICU.  In 2019 the new state of the art Vogter Neuro Intensive Care Unit opened in the Mustian Surgery Center of Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. This unit cares for patients of all ages who suffer neurological trauma (such as head injuries, strokes), require surgical intervention for life-threatening illnesses (brain tumors, aneurysms), and many other types of patients too numerous to name. Over the past 25 years funds have been contributed from the tournament and last year the D. Mark Vogter Memorial Endowment reached $1,100,000 in the corpus of the endowment.

A new fund was created in 2010—the Maria Yealdhall Challenger Tennis Fund was established with the Tallahassee Friends of Our Parks Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department.  All monies collected from ticket sales are donated to this endowment each year and are used to assist in tennis related projects and programs throughout the city.  Shade structures at Winthrop Park and at Tom Brown Park as well as several awnings at Forestmeadows are some of the improvements made with these funds.

A tournament of this size could not happen without committed volunteers who work every year. From ball kids/babes & dudes, who stand on the court for hours, to the food-Moms and hostesses, drivers, desk volunteers and organizers, thousands of hours are donated to make this tournament run smoothly. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer before, during or immediately following the tournament please contact Karen Vogter, Tournament Director, at [email protected]

The ATP Challenger Tour: Path to the Big Time

  • Last updated on May 2, 2023

atp challenger tour doubles

Established in 1978, the Challenger circuit has grown into an important stepping stone for young tennis players looking to make it to the highest levels of the sport.

History of the Challenger Tour

The Challenger circuit was established as a way to provide a professional level of competition for tennis players who weren’t yet ready to compete on the main tour. The circuit initially consisted of just five tournaments in the United States, but quickly grew in popularity and spread around the world.

By the mid-1980s, the Challengers had become an important part of the tennis landscape, with dozens of tournaments held each year. In 1986, the ATP officially recognized the circuit and began awarding ranking points to players based on their performances.

Since then, the circuit has continued to grow in popularity and importance, with the number of tournaments held annually growing steadily year by year. In 2008 there were 178 events played across 40 different countries.

And although numbers have occasionally diminished, for example in the first quarter of 2013 and an inevitable dip due to Covid-19, they’ve since bounced back with 184 events taking place in 2022 and a record 190 plus planned for 2023.

Format of the Challenger Circuit

Challenger tournaments are generally smaller than those on the ATP World Tour, with most events featuring a draw of 32 or 64 players.

The format of the tournaments is similar to that of other professional tennis events, with players competing in singles and doubles matches. The matches are generally played over three sets, although some tournaments may have different rules depending on the surface and location of the event.

The winner of a Challenger event typically earns around 80 ranking points and a prize purse of between $50,000 and $125,000. By contrast, the winner of an ATP Tour event can earn upwards of 1,000 ranking points and a prize purse of more than $1 million.

However in 2023 the ATP launched a new tier of Challengers known as Challenger 175s in which, as the name suggests, the winner can earn 175 points along with prize money of $220,000.

Importance of the ATP Challenger Circuit

For young, ambitious players, the Challenger circuit is vital. It provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience playing against other pros, while also earning vital ranking points and prize money.

Many of the world’s top players have competed in Challenger events at some point in their careers. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray all spent time on the Challenger circuit before making it to the main tour. In fact, Nadal won his first professional title at a Challenger event in 2002, Djokovic in 2004.

The circuit is also an important way for players to gain exposure and build their profiles in the tennis world. While it may not have the same level of media coverage as the ATP Tour, it provides a platform for players to showcase their talents and gain recognition from fans and sponsors.

In addition to helping young players make their way up the rankings, the Challenger circuit also plays an important role in the overall development of the sport. By providing a professional level of competition for players who are not yet ready for the ATP Tour, the circuit helps to ensure a strong pipeline of talent coming up through the ranks.

Challenger Challenges

Despite its importance, the circuit faces numerous challenges in the modern era. One of the biggest is the high cost of hosting events, which can run up to $200,000 when accounting for prize money, player accommodations, and other expenses. With smaller prize pools and less visibility than ATP Tour events, hosting organizations may struggle to justify the expense of hosting a Challenger tournament.

Another issue is the emergence of alternative tours and circuits, such as the ITF World Tennis Tour and the PTPA Challenger-style circuit. These tours provide players with additional options for competing at the professional level, which may lead some players to prioritize these events over Challenger tournaments.

The Challenger Circuit has been criticized for being financially unsustainable for players who are not in the top 100. The prize money on offer at Challenger tournaments is significantly less than that on the ATP Tour, and the costs associated with travelling to tournaments and paying for accommodation can make it difficult for players to make a living on the Challenger Circuit.

Rising to the Challenge

If you get the opportunity, the Challenger circuit is a great way to get to see up and coming stars before they hit the big time – and the occasional wizened pro. LONDON (AP) — The men’s ATP tour will try to spice up doubles tennis by trialing changes including a 15-second serve clock and reserving slots for teams to enter tournaments using their singles rankings.

The ATP announced on Wednesday that the new format will be tested at the Madrid Open later this month and at select events through the season.

Other changes include quicker changeovers, streamlining the schedule to five days during the second week of the tournament, and unrestricted fan movement during play.

The goals are to improve the “exposure and marketing appeal of the doubles game by creating new narratives and storylines for fans, a better on-site experience at tournaments and enhanced product for broadcast,” the ATP said.

The 32-team draw will include up to 16 slots for pairs entering using their singles rankings, which the tour said will create “an unprecedented number of matchups between the world’s top doubles and singles players, and compelling new narratives for fans.”

With the start of the doubles event moved to the second Tuesday in Madrid, it should allow for more singles players to enter.

Time between points will be reduced to 15 seconds after rallies shorter than four shots. Otherwise, it’s 25 seconds, which is the current serve clock in ATP doubles and singles.

“As a tour we believe there’s untapped potential in today’s doubles game,” ATP chief tour officer Ross Hutchins said in a statement. “We know it can add huge entertainment value, but it requires fresh storytelling to connect with fans. The trialing of new formats and rules allows us to stay agile and explore ways to enhance the product.”

Mikhail Elgin and Denis Istomin win men´s doubles title in Moscow

Tennis: Mikhail Elgin and Denis Istomin won their first ATP World Tour team title as they defeated British brothers Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski 6-2, 1-6, 14-12 in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. "We are happy to win," said Istomin.

"We have been playing for almost two years. We've played semi-finals. It’s our first final and we won. It’s our first win at such a big event. Maybe we have more wins to come. We won in Moscow, it’s nice." Elgin and Istomin won just one point more than their opponents as they clinched victory in 69 minutes, having broken serve twice.

They had upset third seeds Tomasz Bednarek and Daniele Bracciali in the first round this week. "We will celebrate in different parts of the world," said Elgin. "Denis will go to Basel and I will go to Kazan to play a challenger.

If we have internet on the plane, we’ll celebrate via Whatsapp. I think [the Skupskis] played well and they have a future as a team." World No. 77 Elgin was contesting his second ATP World Tour final, having finished runner-up at the St.

Petersburg Open two years ago with Alexander Kudryavtsev. The 27-year-old Istomin won his first doubles title at the third attempt, having lost out in the 2012 China Open final (w/ Berlocq) and just last month in St. Petersburg (w/ Inglot).

The Skupskis were contesting their first ATP World Tour final after a string of successes on the Futures circuit and ATP Challenger Tour this season. They were attempting to become the fourth active brothers tandem to win an ATP World Tour title.
