4 Day Baja Racing Adventure in Mexico With Wide Open Baja

Wide Open Baja Baja Racing Experience

Baja Races including the Baja 1000 and Baja 500 are among the most iconic motorsports events in the world and so I was thrilled to be invited to join Wide Open Baja for a four-day adventure driving Baja challenge cars with them. This was probably the most brutal, terrifying, exhilarating, and amazing experience that I've ever had and it's something that every race fan should try at least once. Not only is there the opportunity to pilot machines that are more incredible than can be put into words, but it's also a chance to bond with you buddies and visit parts of the world that normal tourists simply will never see.

Wide Open Baja has offered these tours for the past couple decades. They currently operate out of Los Cabos (a short walk from the cruise ship tender dock), and Ensenda (with a shuttle picking guests up at the San Diego airport). They offer one-day, two-day, three-day, and four-day adventures that are all inclusive including food, lodging, and their signature ice cold beer delivered to your car at the end of each day's drive.

san filipe sandy wash wide open baja

Before I get too far into this post though, I want to address the prices ... the price tag for your Baja racing adventure with Wide Open Baja is certainly higher than what you probably would normally spend on your golf trip to Florida. However, it's actually an absolute STEAL when you start to factor everything included in the experience. For roughly $5,000 per person, what you get is amazing. Other Baja racing packages are available too, including $895 for a 1/2-day, $1,750 fora 1-day, and $3,995 for a 3-day Baja racing experience, so even if you aren't sure you want to fully commit to the 4-day grand tour you can still have an amazing experience racing real Baja Challenge Cars!

This includes the food, drinks, hotel, accommodations, guide, chase team, pit crew, and driving a $100,000+ vehicle that has actually competed (and completed) real Baja races. This isn't just a "Baja Experience" - it's as close to actually participating in the race as you get without actually registering for it yourself and our guide actually completed the Baja 1000 so he was able to share his real life knowledge as well. At every major stop, the tech crew was checking the cars. This ranged from simply checking the tires to replacing CV Joints while we ate lunch and even re-building a transmission in the parking lot of our hotel - lit only head lamps. These guys were amazingly attentive and deserve our eternal thanks and praise.

Wide Open Baja also had multiple "ready to go" cars ready to swap in, should something go wrong on the trail.

Plus, there were the little things such as wiping our visors during stops in the rain to insure that we had a perfect experience!

wide open baja pit crew rebuilding transmission in parking lot of hotel

When you factor all of that into the equation, the price tag seems very under-priced. There's a lot of value here. While it's still a high-number cost for most people, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is worth saving up for!

Questions About Wide Open Baja That You Might Not Think to Ask

There's a lot of press out there about Wide Open Baja , but most of it is focused on the pure awesomeness of being able to experience what it's like driving a Baja Challenge car. Clearly this experience draws a car enthusiast audience who is pretty much focused on just the car itself. However, for me there were a lot of other questions I had before going on the trip.

baja california map

What's the Driving Route Through Baja?

Baja doesn't really have many official "roads", and so for the most part you will be following dirt paths and in some cases making your own trails through the desert. However, these cars are street legal and you will have stretches on the pavement too.

Each Wide Open Baja experience will be somewhat different. However, most four-day trips feature three full days of driving and include a shuttle from San Diego to Ensenada (day 1), Ensenada to San Felipe (day 2), San Felipe to Mike's Sky Rancho (day 3), and Mike's Sky Rancho to Ensenada then shuttle to San Diego (day 4). This is roughly a 400-600 mile driving route across everything from twisty mountain roads with huge dropoffs to dry lake beds perfect for high-speed runs, and sandy washes where you'll have cactus just inches from your head as you speed 70+ mph down the trail.

How Much Does Wide Open Baja Cost?

Wide Open Baja has a variety of different packages with different costs. For trips leaving from Ensenada, prices start at $895 for a Half Day Baja Challenge Experience to multi-day excursions ranging in cost from $3995 (3 Days) to $4995 (4 Days).

Trips that begin in Cabo San Lucas are more expensive however. They include a 1/3 day "Taste of Baja" for three hours starting at $595 and $945 for a half day. Longer Baja racing experiences include driving from Cabo to La Paz. These trips are $4295 (3 Days) and $6295 (4 Days).

These costs generally include everything you'd need to have a great time. However you should plan to pay for any additional drinks, souvenirs, snacks and of course tips. The Wide Open Baja crew is amazing and while the cost might appear high, the team supporting you deserves whatever you can provide in terms of gratuity as a thanks for a job well done.

wide open baja race car suspension

What Kind of Baja Cars are We Driving?

Wide Open Baja has more than 30 custom-built BC 1-9 Sportsman  Baja Challenge Cars that are all generally the same and feature a 175 hp 4-cylinder Subaru engine, connected to a 4-speed manual transmission. They are rear-wheel drive, with BFGoodrich tires, and have an amazing suspension with 18" shocks and springs. Both the driver and co-driver are bolted in with a 5-point safety harness and plugged into both in-helmet radio coms and fresh air supply. Some vehicles may have different electronics or paint jobs but they are all fundamentally the same. You also are provided with a helmet skirt to discourage dust from migrating into the helmet from below. Upon request, they also provide neck collars to reduce the potential for injury from being bounced around. If you have any sort of neck injury, I would highly recommend you consider this option.

These aren't just glorified UTVs or ATVs as you might see offered by cruise ship excursions going into Cabo or Ensenada. These are actual vehicles that have competed in and completed multiple Baja 1000 and Baja 500 races. In fact, if you enjoy your Wide Open Baja racing experience you can always come back and rent the cars for the real race starting at a low low price of about $100,000 for their arrive and drive Baja race experience.

What if I Don't Drive Stick?

I don't drive stick normally, but these vehicles were actually easier to learn to drive than I initially feared. That being said, sometimes shift points can be hard to find but unlike driving a manual transmission car at home, there are generally no traffic lights or stop and go traffic to worry about. You will however need to watch out to maintain a steady throttle on some of the more challenging portions so that you don't stall out on rough hill sections.

The other way to answer this question is that you can always bring a buddy to drive. I did try driving but honestly, Mike from The Gentleman Racer was a much better driver and so I had a blast playing cameraman and radio jockey while praying that he didn't oversteer and send us into a ravine.

james in race seat wide open baja race car

I'm a Big Guy - Will I Fit in the Wide Open Baja Cars?

This was one of my huge fears about the trip. What if I showed up in Ensenda and discovered that Wide Open Baja didn't have a car with a big enough seat belt or a big enough helmet? Luckily, both fears were quickly erased. They had a XXXL helmet for my huge head and even offered to adjust the padding if I wanted more room. The next step however was fitting into the car itself.

Luckily, once again the staff was awesome at helping me get comfortable and showing me how to get in/out. They adjusted the seat, and harness to fit perfectly and also adjusted the steering wheel itself too. While I'm 6'2" and 400 pounds, they said they've had even bigger customers and it's not unusually to have professional athletes who are both taller and wider than me.

These aren't the easiest cars to get in and out of since there's no door. Instead, you have to prop yourself up and exit with your head first and then while sitting on the ledge swing one leg out onto the ground followed by the other. It may seem complicated but you quickly learn how to do it. Doing it gracefully is a lot more difficult though! That part was true even for smaller guys, but don't worry ... nobody is judging.

hanging out at mikes sky rancho

What Should I Pack For My Baja Racing Adventure?

Wide Open Baja will provide a great packing sheet with recommended items however, here are a few things that you should consider especially important:

Shoes with good soles - you'll be walking on rocks, sand, and whatever else so you'll need good shoes that you don't mind getting wet, muddy, dirty, etc.

Driving Gloves - these make holding the steering wheel much easier and even as the co-driver it's more comfortable to keep warm and to hold on with.

Windbreaker / Jacket - sure, it's Mexico and that means it's warm - right? Our trip in February was unseasonably cold and while it wasn't uncomfortable to be wearing jeans and a tee-shirt most of the time - I didn't factor in the 70 mph wind chill from the air rushing through our non-existent windshield! These authentic Baja racing challenge cars do not have windshields and so between the ambient wind and that created by driving fast, it gets cold. On top of that, the overnight stop at Mike's Sky Rancho is at 4,000 feet elevation and we had frost on the tires that morning. However, you might want to pack in layers since it can get hot in the desert by San Felipe even if it is cold in the mountains.

Wet Wipes - everyone poops. That's just a fact and the reality is that while our hotels had nice bathrooms with proper toilet paper, you don't want to get stuck taking a crap on a cactus and not be able to wipe.

Spending Cash & Tip Money - you aren't going to find an ATM in most places and so it's easier to bring cash with you on the trip. The tipping policy was somewhat of a debate among our group and while each of us offered between $100-$200 pp, I felt like that was probably lower than what was deserved by the crew. You'll also want to bring cash for any souvenirs as well as extra drinks that you might want to buy.

Snacks - the food on the trip isn't bad and while I wasn't starving, at multiple points it was nice to have protein bars to fall back on. Similarly, if you enjoy sweets such as chocolate bars or candy it might be a good idea to bring some along too.

Do The Wide Open Baja Cars Have GoPro Mounts?

baja challenge tours gotcha

Your suitcases will be traveling in the Wide Open Baja support vehicle and will NOT be accessible except at night. However, each car has a "frunk" that is big enough for two moderately sized backpacks. Wide Open Baja provides each customer with a very nice "bug out bag" that you need to use to carry any essentials should something happen and they need to send you directly back home. This could be that you were a jackass and they no longer want you on the trip or it could be something more critical. Either way, this is your bag to carry anything you might need, including: medicine, snacks, camera, phone (there's no reception but if you want to take photos it's better than your DSLR), gloves, change of underwear etc.

Our Four-Day Baja Driving Experience with Wide Open Baja

Our journey began in San Diego where our guide James met us and the other guys on our trip and we drove 2 hours south to Ensenada, Mexico with a quick lunch stop south of Rosarito. We then headed straight for the Horsepower Ranch in Ensenada where we'd get introduced to our cars and show our comfort level to our guides.

This test-out period is as important for the guests learning how to handle the cars as it is the guides getting a better understanding for what each guest's abilities, temperament, and experience. While not stated as such, this time spent flying around the course will set the tone for the next several days. So, if you aren't comfortable - make sure to tell your guide. He will also be watching to make sure you are driving safely and not being a hot shot that could put lives in danger. There are no guardrails where you're going - but there are lots of sharp drops, large rocks, and farm animals, so safety is critical.

dinner at horsepower ranch ensenda mexico

Horsepower Ranch, Ensenada

After our driver training session, it was time to clean up and get ready for dinner. Accommodations here at Horsepower Ranch are the nicest on trip and it's quite an experience to see the cars right outside the window. After washing up, we went to what could only be described as the "Great Hall". In this giant room decorated with Baja racing memorabilia we had a chance to enjoy some guacamole and chips while drinking Mexican beers and talking with our new friends before heading to dinner.

Horsepower Ranch is the starting point for multiple different Wide Open Baja adventures including one, two, and three-day trips. The guests we met here ranged from a group of guys from Missouri who arived by private jet and helicopter, two different father and son guys getaway groups and the pair of guys from Canada who would be joining our trip.

After a delicious but rustic dinner followed by stories about previous trips, Baja racing tales, and more - it was time to head to bed since our call time in the morning was 8 am for breakfast and then heading out.

wide open baja cars by cows

Racing across Baja, from Ensenada to San Felipe

On our first day, we started in a light rain that we escaped mid-way through the day as we threaded our way through ranches. After an amazing "Safari Lunch" cooked up by the guys from Wide Open Baja, we said farewell to the other two groups and continued East ... out of the mountains and down into the desert leading to San Felipe and the Sea of Cortez.

Unfortunately, as soon as we descended from the mountains we traded rain for sand storms as we crossed a dry lake bed at nearly 80 mph and then passed through epic sandy whoops that nearly at the car a few times. In fact, one whoop did take a bite out of the car causing the tire to come off the bead. Luckily, the guys in the chase car were able to change the tire for us in the sand storm and we were back in action again.

making new trails through baja desert brush

Driving from San Felipe to Mike's Sky Rancho with Wide Open Baja

Our drive on Day three started in the sand dunes by the Sea of Cortez and continued through the cactus-filled sandy washes leading to the foothills.

After a fantastic lunch, it was time to head up into the mountains surrounding Mike's Sky Rancho. Since we had "extra time" our guide, James decided to give us a taste of just what these cars could do in terms of mountain trails.

challenging off road trails new mikes sky rancho mexico baja racing

Almost all of our trip to this point was flat or mild incline - but no longer. This trail really showed off how amazingly capable the Baja challenge cars we were driving could be. These are not 4WD they are in fact rear-wheel-drive - yet the car zoomed up and down trails that would have challenged a Jeep Wrangler (and certainly at the speed we were going). This trail above was particularly interesting because normal off-road logic said to us that we should go around the rock in the path ... but we kept stalling out. The trick we learned though was that instead of going AROUND ... these cars are designed to go OVER and THROUGH obstacles!

mikes sky rancho frosty winter morning

A Stop at Mike's Sky Rancho - Legendary Baja Racing Destination

With the sun setting and the temperatures dropping, it was time to head to our stop for the night.

Mike's Sky Rancho is one of the most famous spots in Baja California and a legendary stop for Baja racers of all levels. It's a stop off for people racing as well as those like us that are just enjoying the amazing terrain. While we had the entire resort to ourselves the night we were there, I'm told it is booked solid nearly every weekend. The resort itself is completely off the grid and there are no door locks or light switches even. Power comes on after dark in the evenings and then goes off around 9 pm as a sort of defacto curfew and then back on in the morning to remind you to wake up and head down to breakfast.

fording a mountain stream in baja

Driving from Mike's Sky Rancho back to Ensenada

The next morning it was time for our last day of driving and so we set out through the icy streams and down amazing mountain roads. These mountain roads are some of the most dangerous trails that I think I've ever experienced and one extra sandy turn taken too fast could result in you plummeting hundreds of feet down into the valley below. Needless to say, there are no guardrails here - but there were animals, on-coming trucks, and even bicycles to avoid.

taking photos of mountains wide open baja

Somehow, we made it safely down out of the mountains into the farms and ranches along the coast!

wide open baja coming down into valley

This journey up the coast and back to Ensenada was probably the most scenic of the whole trip - or maybe it was simply that I could focus on the landscape more.

wide open baja at coast

As we traveled up the Baja coast, we passed by waves crashing on the beaches, vineyards, and small villages before ending back in the "big city" of Ensenada where we transferred to our shuttle back to San Diego.

Wide Open Baja is an absolutely amazing experience!

This is the perfect adventure for anyone who loves extreme racing experiences or simply loves off road driving and wants to explore a new part of the world in a way few others will ever be able to do.

Tearing Through Mexico In Someone Else’s Baja Challenge Buggy Is the Only Way to Travel

Want to see what it’s like to race in the epic Baja 1000? Wide Open Baja is happy to oblige.

Tearing Through Mexico In Someone Else’s Baja Challenge Buggy Is the Only Way to Travel

kylecheromcha

"You want to hit the jump at around 3500 RPM, ok?" the voice crackles through the radio.

I look down at my tachometer, broken since I climbed into the Baja Challenge buggy 24 hours prior, as I line up in the middle of a long, sandy straight surrounded by desert grasses somewhere in western Mexico. A half mile ahead, the rest of the group waits around an angry little ridge our guide and desert racing champion Miguel Sandoval swears will provide the extended airtime we've been seeking. Over dinner last night, I made a point to ask him if we'd get a chance to really jump these purpose-built machines—not a fun little whoop, not a cattle guard, but an honest-to-goodness, I'm-flying-Jack jump. Wish, granted. Gulp.

There's no time to dwell on the fact that, like most of this trip with the adventure tourism specialists at Wide Open Baja , this is going to be a brand-new sensory experience for me. I've never jumped anything , never charged at an obvious mistake and told myself to keep the throttle pinned. Miguel doesn't care. I asked for a jump, so a jump is what I've got. I radio back a confirmation on the useless RPM advice and elect not to tell him that I'll be flying blind. Then I floor it.

message-editor%2F1557332042412-bajajump2.jpg

That half-mile run-up is covered in an instant. I can hear the unmuffled Subaru flat-four engine spinning faster and faster behind me— What does 3,500 sound like again? —as the jump comes into focus, Miguel and the others standing off to the sides. I don't look at them. Instead, as every fiber in my body screams for me to slow down, I lock onto the rise and hit the sucker dead-on.

The peace that settles on the cabin in that moment is almost transcendental. One moment you're clawing and thrashing along a rocky arroyo with the noise and heat and dust, and the next there is just you, in the air, flying. I can no longer hear the scream of Boxer engine or the clatter of those BFGoodrich tires. It's sublimation, essentially—what was a grounded solid is now a free-floating gas. There is no takeoff sensation serving a more abrupt state change than a jump in Baja.

Of course, there's the matter of returning to Earth. It turns out I am   going too fast, and I fly a good fifty feet past the landing zone, touching down as the trail again drops into another arroyo. The buggy fishtails wildly as I struggle to bring it to heel; finally, after a few oscillations that feel like the start of a bona fide rollover, man and machine come to a creaking stop in the billowing silt. I exhale in celebration— I just jumped a Baja buggy! In Baja!— before a strange wistfulness washes over me. I tasted the air, and now all I want in this world is more.

Baja Is as Baja Does

Wide Open Baja knows that feeling. Owner and American desert racer Roger Norman also holds the keys to SCORE International, the sanctioning body that controls the premier quartet of annual off-road races in this corner of Mexico: the San Felipe 250, Baja 400, Baja 500, and the big mac Baja 1000. The modern incarnations of these historic contests are lionized for their authenticity to the original form, their raw risk, their utterly transportive nature. Drive three hours south of San Diego to the coastal city of Ensenada and suddenly you're at the edge of the apeiron, standing before an entirely different, seemingly limitless world of dusty hijinks.

Running mostly unchanged since 1967, the Baja 1000 is incredibly hostile to inexperienced racers and spectators alike, a stygian, multi-day slog crossed with a rolling cookout seasoned with the very real possibility of death. Still, tens of thousands of people flock to the various spectator zones along its 1000-mile route every year; other, richer folks buy spots on race teams, or perhaps entire race teams themselves to get at the action. Wide Open Baja reckons it can grab thrill seekers both groups with a whole suite of off-road tours and experiences that range from a casual half-day jaunt to a very real driver's seat in the Baja 1000, with the car, support crew, and logistics all covered. Notable notables who've taken part include Tanner Foust, Ben Stiller, and even the late, great Paul Newman.

Video thumbnail

In between those options are one-, three-, and four-day guided tours departing from both Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas at the Baja peninsula's southern tip that blur the line between rugged luxury and pure backwoods fun. It's like one of those corporate team-building events where a company pays a former Navy SEAL to terrorize its employees, if the SEAL then put everyone on a C-17 to Kandahar. Even if you opt for the cheapest Wide Open package, there is no separation between your experience and that of a real Baja racer. You're charging over the same terrain in the same Challenge buggy, breaking the same parts, probably, and staring down the same very real danger.

The Weapons of Wide Open Baja

By this point, you might have some questions about how such a thing is possible in 2019—and how it all works exactly. For the Ensenada adventures, all you have to do is get yourself to San Diego, where a waiting van whisks you over the border and a couple of hours down the coast to Horsepower Ranch, a semi-luxe rustic inn perched on a gently sloping hillside that doubles as Wide Open Baja's headquarters. The small rooms are artfully decorated with stone sinks, handmade wood furniture, and photos of jumping trucks absolutely everywhere. Another clue that this isn't your average retreat is parked in the fancy circular driveway—instead of a line of black cars, there's a group of custom-built Baja Challenge-class buggies in all their knobby-tired, long-travel glory.

message-editor%2F1557332537080-img_0924.jpg

These miraculous vehicles are built on a thick tube-steel chassis, a custom design perfected over millions of miles of hard-fought Baja experience since it debuted in 1997. Nearly 200 horsepower is drawn from a rear-mounted EJ25 Subaru boxer engine, which bolts up to a rigid four-speed manual transmission and powers the rear wheels. Stick shift experience is a must. Four-corner independent suspension with remote reservoir shocks offer a flexible 18 inches of wheel travel all around, and 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 shoes are one of the few tires capable of everything Baja will throw at you—deep silt beds, miles of dagger-sharp rocks, the occasional water crossing, and of course, high-speed jumps. There are no sway bars. They're literally the cars that Wide Open sends into the real Baja 1000. And they usually finish—no small feat for a race that sees more forced retirements every year than a round of corporate layoffs.

message-editor%2F1557332569262-img_0953.jpg

It's one thing to read all the specs and watch videos of the buggies doing impossible things. It's quite another to slide behind the wheel, cinch that five-point harness up tight, slap on your helmet, and effortlessly charge full speed through a rut that would destroy the suspension of any production car, even something with legit off-road abilities like the Ford F-150 Raptor. It might be physically impossible to see a knobby front tire rise into view as the suspension runs through its full range without bursting into laughter. That astounding capability doubles as a wide margin of error. Overcorrect that slide into a massive cactus? No problem. Hit a whoop way too hard? Peachy. Roll it? The engine might smoke a bit when they get it right side up again, but it'll be ok.

As Safe—or as Dangerous—as You

The first night consists of a safety talk—more of a "It's up to you to not kill yourself out there" than anything else—and a brief shakedown run around the ranch to get acclimated to the car's floaty handling. Wide Open does take your personal safety seriously, recording no serious injuries over its 20-plus-year history, but there's only so much the company can do if you drive off a cliff fifty miles from the nearest paved road. There's also a recognition that yes, this is not the United States anymore. You're required to keep your passport with you at all times; should trouble arrive in the form of something like a bad crash with local traffic, your guide will throw you in another buggy and race to the border while Wide Open helps clean up the mess, financially or otherwise.

message-editor%2F1557332635331-img_0926copy.jpg

The simple reality that it is actually up to you to keep yourself and your driving partner alive snaps into focus when setting out for real the next morning. Led by a guide in their own buggy, the convoy follows the very same dirt "roads" often used in the Baja 1000 (its exact route changes yearly), ostensibly public tracks that seem impassible for everything but Baja vehicles and the occasional overloaded Ford F100. You're instructed to leave a 45-second gap between you and the car in front when setting off from an intersection to avoid choking on the blinding dust, which generally translates to at least a half a mile. That makes for large stretches of the trip where you feel—and are—completely alone.

Well, almost. There's near-constant radio contact from the guide as they call out mile markers for specific turns and hazards, along with a chase buggy carrying two talented field mechanics and a mobile garage of spare parts. There's a support truck hauling even more backups, including two whole buggies on a trailer, along whatever paved road runs closest to the action. Something will break out there, it's just a question of where and when.

message-editor%2F1557332734049-img_0959.jpg

For the three-day Ensenada tour, that second day takes you from the outskirts of the city to a remote outpost deep in a national park called Mike's Sky Ranch. It's a combination motel-dive bar-Baja racer hangout, an unlikely off-road Mecca plopped along the side of a stunning valley like it fell out of the sky whole cloth.

The inside of the dark bar is completely plastered with racing team stickers and T-shirts, as well as multiple memorials to the fallen competitors Baja has claimed over the years. The doors have no locks. There's no cell service or WiFi; the entire place runs on a generator that shuts off at 10 p.m. sharp, revealing an endless canopy of stars stretching from horizon to horizon.

message-editor%2F1557332832043-img_0974.jpg

That brilliant night sky is just one of Baja's wonders. The final day, a long sprint back up the coast to Ensenada, traverses thorny mountains, high-speed flats, coastal hills, and a dramatic rocky beach to showcase the peninsula's true topographical range. The roads themselves also shape-shift with the terrain—tightly kinked and strewn with debris at elevation, smoothing out to long, sandy stretches not unlike a rally stage closer to the Pacific Ocean. It's obvious the previous day was a warmup to this. How else do you explain the newfound comfort in drifting the buggy along the edge of a 200-foot cliff?

Beautiful Baja

It's a little unfortunate that the most exciting part of the trip peters out into a final push into Ensenada on pavement, where that same van awaits to shuttle you back across the border to San Diego. But there are a couple more highlights to be found at the end of the road. One, the buggies get dropped off at Wide Open Baja's massive garage for a quick reconditioning following every adventure, and the warehouse is wide open for the curious to poke around and observe these mighty steeds at various stages of disassembly. Miguel's Pro Stock Ford Ranger is there, too, plus a few classic desert toys dating back decades.

message-editor%2F1557333055797-img_1004.jpg

The final surprise is the feeling—and reactions—that comes with rolling into town in a dusty buggy and a full-face helmet. You might think the region's residents are tired of all this racing, tired of playact desert racers blasting down their streets, tired of all the talk of dust and glory. The reality couldn't be more different. Small children come running at the sound of that flat-four engine. People on the street stare and nod approvingly. Even the ranchers who actually use those far-out trails for work give a friendly wave when you pass each other out there in the desert.

It helps that Wide Open Baja is mostly a good neighbor; the guides hold drivers to a strict speed limit anywhere near a house or village, the company helps bring a lot of money into the region, and it's staffed mostly by locals who care deeply about maintaining Mexican acceptance of the weird and wild world of off-road racing.

message-editor%2F1557332946746-img_0986copy.jpg

Wide Open's turnkey racing option and celebrity clients may get all the attention. But to see and experience a bit of the real Baja, it helps to slow down.

baja challenge tours gotcha

My husband and I will be in moscow and wanted to take a side trip..understand Vladimir & Suzdal is quite nice. Do you prefer that to Sergiev Posad? Do you know any agencies that provide group tours or private tours to Vladimir & Suzdal? I understand that Patriarshy Dom is not operating its group tour during this time. Please advise. Any information you have to share would be helpful.

Vladimir & Suzdal are close to each other. you can use vladimir as base and also visit suzdal.

I will give you some links ( sorry i am out on tour and can't do more research).

http://gotorussia.vand.ru/ ( this is a tour operator offering 1 day tour from moscow to Vladimir , Suzdal or both) there are also combo tours with sergiev Possad with any of the above towns.

In order to organize tours from Vladimir, there are 3 major sites where you will get infor about the tours operating from Vladimir, how to reach there etc.

1. http://www.tour.vladimir.ru

2. http://www.vladimir-city.ru ( official site)

3. http://www.museum.vladimir.ru ( my recommended site)

<< go to english version / select option "services" / tours & excursions

My sugestion would be to go to Vladimir by train from moscow in the evening, take rest and then join a full day tour of vladimir - suzdal and return at night or next day morning. The train takes 2-3 hrs. Details available at http://www.poezda.net ( in english) .You can even book online

Trains are clean and safe. Hotel Vladimir at Vladimir is ok. near the train station. you can find the contacts in google. ( book the tickets in advance.)

You can visit sergiev possad ( quite near to moscow) using the moscow based tour agency mentioned above. They offer day trips to Sergivev possad.

If you want to search the net further, go to http://www.yandex.ru ( russian website) and type in "vladimir tour" or "suzdal tour" in ENGLISH. This will give you many sites with english option

have a nice trip

will you consider a DIY trip?

from moscow to vladimir take a long-distance train or a suburban (electrichek) train from kursky station. there are several in the daytime/early evening. certain long-distance trains are faster and can arrive in 2 hours. suburbans take 3 hrs. probably less complicated to buy suburban ticket than one of a long-distance train (where you need passport, specify what type of seat, which train number...) and also cheaper

once in vladimir you can walk around for 1-2 hours or even have your dinner there. then take a bus (avtobus) at the bus station just up a slope from the train station. the bus runs every 30-60mins till late. i took the one around 8-9pm. and the evening buses go directly into city centre of suzdal. the trip is about 40-60mins

the tricky part is if you reserve your accomodation in suzdal with a guesthouse/B&B, it may not be easy to locate. the one i had booked did not have a sign hanging at the door. i walked around for about an hour and at last had to find a local to talk to my host over phone and then she kindly led me to the right wooden house

  19. HOW IT WORKS

Typically, when one conjures up notions of a follow-the-leader type tour, one might imagine a scenario where everyone runs a steady pace, often dictated by the slowest participant, or a reserved guide. I found the tour let each of us play at our own pace and were allowed plenty of freedom to get ourselves into trouble if we so chose.
