Baker’s Visitor Center gets a new update
Story by Emma Berkley , Staff Writer | February 16, 2023
The Visitor Center, located in Denious Hall, has recently been updated to be more welcoming to visiting students.
The Baker University Office of Admissions officially announced its updated Visitor Center on Jan. 31. The Visitor Center, located in Denious Hall, can now have up to 20 visitors a day compared to last semester’s six to eight visitors a day.
With the “new” Visitor Center, potential new students are stationary in one building for the majority of their visit, aside from the campus tour. Before, students walked around campus to meet with coaches, faculty, other students and advisors. This now all happens in the updated Visitor Center and it is less taxing on the admissions staff to organize visit days.
Eva Durand, Assistant Director of the Campus Visit Experience, explains that one of her favorite things about the New Visitor Center was the decorating process and making the place more “Bakerized”. Durand hopes that the new Visitor Center will be a place that better welcomes new students.
“I hope it makes them feel more at home and that baker is the place they want to be,” Durand said. “I want them to feel that we are going out of our way to make them feel welcome for the short time they are here and that they are the center of attention.”
One of Durand’s favorite things about the new Visitor Center is how they stuck with the old Baker Tradition of naming each room after the four gates of the university: King Arthur’s Court, House of Hanover, Columbian Commonwealth and Senatus Romanus. Durand also points out that the permanent staff and UAA staff have all had a very positive attitude about the whole process.
Dr. Cassy Bailey, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, was happy to say that staff didn’t have to break the bank to add the new Visitors Center either. Most of the decorations were either in storage or donated by Baker University staff; only $150 were spent on three Baker Wetlands signs to add to the center.
Bailey offered her thoughts on how the New Visitor Center would change visitor visits to Baker University. She explained that it “shows off Baker in a professional and high-quality way, while still making sure that the visit is still personalized to that one person.”
Sophomore Lee Marshall III is one of about 40 University Admissions Assistants who work in the Admissions office. Marshall explains that from the UAA standpoint, the New Visitor Center makes his job easier because he is not taking visitors to different buildings around campus to meet with whoever is on their itinerary.
“The visitor is in one place all day, besides their campus tour, so we don’t have the mix-up and changes like we used to have sometimes,” Marshall said. “Learning the different rooms is confusing at first but it’s just more of a learning curve and everyone will get better at knowing the rooms with time.”
Bailey said that evaluations are sent out to the visitors at the end of their visits and is an excellent resource for the staff in admissions. That way, they are aware of what can be improved for future visit days and what visitors think of the new Visitor Center. There is hope that the new addition to the Office of Admissions will help Baker increase the number of students attending and the number of students visiting as well.

Kevin Bacon returns to high school where ‘Footloose’ was filmed 40 years later
K ick off your Sunday shoes, because Kevin Bacon has returned to the school where the 1984 cult classic, "Footloose" was filmed over 40 years ago.
Bacon, who starred as Ren McCormack in "Footloose," visited Payson High in Utah, the school that was the setting of the 1984 film. He was convinced to return by none other than the students themselves.
The students spent months posting social media videos re-enacting scenes and dances from the iconic film with the hashtag #bacontopayson, in hopes of bringing the actor back to the school.
‘FOOTLOOSE’ STAR KEVIN BACON EMBRACES FARMING, HOME COOKING FAR FROM HOLLYWOOD
Back in March, Bacon confirmed via video message to the students that he would visit the school, and he came through on his promise on Saturday, April 20.
Bacon returned to the school, which is set to be relocated, on their last prom night.

"Go Lions! Here we are with this beautiful, beautiful spot on this beautiful, beautiful day," Bacon said to Payson High students, according to video posted by Salt Lake City's ABC 4. "It’s been a long time – 40 years – that just blows my mind, you know. Things look a little different around here. I’d say the thing that looks the most different is me."
JENNIFER ANISTON, GEORGE CLOONEY, KEVIN BACON'S EARLY STRUGGLES BEFORE HOLLYWOOD FAME
"When I first heard about this Bacon to Payson thing, I was like ‘Wow, this is crazy.’ But you were all just tireless. Unrelenting … You talked me into it," Bacon said.
"I think it’s great to see that kind of commitment to anything. I also think that it’s amazing the power that this movie has had to just kind of bring people together, and connect on the basic ideas there are behind the movie – you know, standing up to authority sometimes, and to being forgiving of people who are not exactly the same as you, and for standing up for your own freedoms and your right to express yourself, and for having compassion for other people," the actor continued.
"And that’s what all of you have shown here, by turning what could be just a movie star coming back to get pat on the back, into something really positive. And that’s what we’re going to do today when we build these kits," Bacon continued.
The students helped create 5,000 "essential resource kits" for youth and schools in support of Bacon's charity SixDegrees, according to The Associated Press.
"Thank you, thank you so much, and thank you especially for the commitment to giving back to your community and to the people you’re sharing this planet with, and I’m thrilled we’re going to be working here together today," Bacon said to the students.
Also during his visit, Bacon returned to his original locker from the movie, in a video posted by Today, which was decorated with memorabilia by students currently enrolled at the school.
"Footloose," a movie that served as a breakthrough for Bacon, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

2024 NFL Draft: Notre Dame CB Cam Hart Takes Top-30 Visit With Jaguars
The talented cornerback could be a Day 2 option.
- Author: John Shipley
The Jacksonville Jaguars will have to make some critical decisions this week, with major draft needs looming at cornerback, wide receiver, and beyond. As a result, the Jaguars are doing some heavy homework on both groups.
According to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson , the Jaguars hosted Notre Dame cornerback Cam Hart on a top-30 visit, making Hart one of several Day 2 cornerbacks the Jaguars have brought into the building ahead of this week's draft.
Hart, 23, appeared in three games in 2019 before a season-ending shoulder injury. He then appeared in nine games in 2020, recording three tackles and two pass breakups. In 2021, Hart appeared in 13 games and started 10, recording 42 tackles, four tackles for loss, nine pass breakups, and two interceptions.
In 2022, Hart started 11 games and recorded 25 tackles, three tackles for loss, and four pass deflections. In 2023, Hart started 12 games as a team captain, recording 21 tackles, three tackles for loss, three forced fumbles (team lead), and four pass breakups in his final season.
The Jaguars released former starting cornerback Darious Williams this offseason before signing free agent cornerback Ronald Darby. Behind Darby and starting cornerback Tyson Campbell, the Jaguars have third-year cornerbacks Gregory Junior and Montaric Brown and second-year cornerback Christian Braswell.
“I think it’s a good group. I think if you looked at 32 boards, you’d probably find 28 different ways to stack the top 10 corners in this draft," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said this week. "You might find 32 different ways. I think it’s that close. I think there’s good value, they’re good players, the make up and character of these players are all different, it’s all over the board. It’s going to be interesting how that group falls off the board on draft day.”
