New Global Campaign for Tourism in Israel starring British TV host Sian Welby

Following the successful “Two Cities One Break” campaign we created for the Israeli ministry of tourism last year, a new global campaign was recently launched based on a concept we created: “Two Sunny Cities. One Break.”

We collaborated once more with last year’s beloved presenter Shir Elmaliach and teamed her up with famous British TV host Sian Welby.

The video, directed by Tal Zagreba, uses Instagram’s stories aesthetics as it follows the two when they travel together in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. In order to attract potential tourists from cold and grey Europe, the main theme in the campaign is the Israeli sun, with Boney M’s “Sunny” played in the background.

The video will be promoted on TV and online across Europe.

Yoshevah Jones, Tel Aviv’s Most In-Demand Face, on Growing Up As a Black Hebrew

By Liana Satenstein

Yosheva Jones Israeli Black Hebrew model

Of late, model Yoshevah Jones has become one of the most in-demand faces in Tel Aviv, which held its own Fashion Week this month. She is captivating, with almond-shaped eyes, long lashes, and a septum ring for a touch of offbeat cool. Like many young Netflix-obsessed Israelis, Jones, who spent this season walking shows like Comme Il Faut and Dorin Frankfurt, speaks perfect English. Her slang is current and and is rendered with no trace of an Israeli accent. When I talk to her over lunch, I feel like I’m back in New York with a fellow American, until she switches to Hebrew to order an orange juice.

Jones’s modeling rise is of particular note, given her unique background. Though the local fashion industry has historically cast diverse models on its runways, Jones is from the Black Hebrews, a group that settled in Israel in 1969. The movement was founded in Chicago by Ben Ammi Ben-Israel (born Ben Carter), who considered it a radical exit from America during the height of the civil rights movement. (He referred to America as the “Land of Captivity.”) During the 1960s, Ben-Israel shared a vision that an angel had come to him and urged him to bring black Americans to settle in Israel; he also claimed that Black Hebrews were the descendants of Israelites. A small group of 400 black Americans, mostly from Chicago, came through Liberia in 1967, where they spent two years, and then eventually moved on to the small town of Dimona, about two hours north of Tel Aviv. Jones’s family were some of the first inhabitants: Her mother immigrated at age 17. Now, the community is estimated to be about 4,000 strong.

Members of the group do not consider themselves Jewish, but they observe similar holidays (Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah), in addition to their own celebrations such as New World Passover, which honors the group’s exodus from America. While they do not keep the laws of kosher according to the Torah, they maintain a vegan lifestyle, a belief that they say will lead to eternal life . “We were tivonim [vegan],” says Jones. “We couldn’t have anything that was processed, even chips. It was totally plant-based.” Female members also keep the laws of tzniut , or modesty, meaning that the knees, arms, and collarbones should be covered.

Elements of their spiritual religion may be Jewish, but Black Hebrews were not eligible to claim citizenship under Israel’s Law of Return, which allows those who have Jewish ancestry to immigrate. As one of the first black communities to settle in Israel, they faced widespread discrimination —and still do. As a result, their relationship with Israeli society is largely fractured. “I’ve always felt different being around the Israeli society, mainly because in the community they made sure to tell us that we were different,” says Jones. Despite relative isolation from the general population, Jones was taught in Hebrew along with her secular studies at a school in Dimona.

Why Is the Discourse Around Sydney Sweeney’s Breasts So Unhinged?

By Kate Lloyd

Though Jones grew up in Dimona, she never completely felt like she belonged there. “I started seeing other people, especially Americans, on television. Like, ‘They look just like me. Why are they doing this, and why am I doing that?’ ” she says, “At 16 or 17, your mind is going to explore.” Part of her disconnect stemmed from her growing interest in personal style. As a kid, Jones followed the traditional modest dress codes, but would at the same time watch programs like America’s Next Top Model . “I loved seeing how women would style their outfits and I couldn’t wait to be able to go shopping for my own real clothes. I used to buy different tops, shirts, skinny pants, and shorts, and I used to try them on and stand in front of the mirror posing, saying to myself after watching America’s Next Top Model , ‘I can do that, too,’ ” she says. “It was one of my favorite shows and it really made me want to get into modeling.”

Jones separated herself from the community at 18 when she made the decision to join the army and then obtain her Israeli citizenship. (The Israeli government made an agreement with the Black Hebrews in 2003 that if members joined the army , they could become Israeli citizens and live and work in the country legally; in the ’90s they were granted temporary resident status.) “There was no way I could be in this closed community. I thought there was more to life,” she says. “Everyone thinks the army is their way out.” For four years, she worked as a communications technician and was able to meet other Israelis from a variety of different backgrounds—an experience that opened her eyes to different lifestyles ranging from secular to Orthodox.

After her military service, Jones pursued modeling while still living in Dimona. She sought out an agency and was immediately signed. One of her first jobs was to pose in a swimsuit, something that was considered controversial at home. “I knew that it would be frowned upon [to pose] in a bathing suit. So I asked my mom about it, and she told me, if that is what I want to do, then she has my back.” A few years ago, Jones moved from Dimona closer to Tel Aviv to develop her career. She is now married to a former member of the community and has a 2-year-old daughter.

Jones explains that she still has a feeling of otherness and at times, she doesn’t know which culture she fits into; she has not been to the U.S. and so considers Israel home by default. “It is hard: You don’t belong here and you don’t fit in over there,” she says of her Israeli and American identity. “I don’t feel on this side or that side. I don’t know where I belong.” That said, modeling has helped her build confidence and find some middle ground. “It has taught me in a way that I am enough the way I am,” she says, adding, “I have really learned to accept myself more.”

Latest Information for U.S. Citizens

Information for U.S. Citizens in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza

U.S. citizens should heed the  Travel Advisory  for Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The U.S. Embassy continues to closely monitor the dynamic security situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. There are active military operations and active rocket and mortar fire in Gaza and the Gaza periphery.  Terrorist groups, lone-actor terrorists and other violent extremists continue plotting possible attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Terrorists and violent extremists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities. Violence can occur in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza without warning. If you require emergency assistance while in Israel, the West Bank or Gaza, contact the  U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem  by email ([email protected]).

Individuals seeking to depart Gaza  through the Rafah crossing into Egypt should monitor the  Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and Borders’ Facebook Page  for a list of those approved to cross. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, or immediate family (as listed below) who desire our assistance and have not already provided their information to the Department of State, please email U.S. Embassy Jerusalem at  [email protected]  with a copy of the individual’s travel document as well as an explanation or proof of relationship.

The U.S. government does not control the crossing lists nor determine who is permitted to depart Gaza or enter Egypt. Individuals must assess their own safety and risks in attempting to cross the border. Individuals permitted to enter Egypt will likely receive a 72-hour Egyptian visa; all those who cross should have a plan for onward travel from Egypt in this timeframe. U.S. citizens, LPRs and their immediate family members who successfully enter Egypt and require further consular assistance should contact the  U.S. Embassy in Cairo  via the  U.S. Citizens Services Navigator .  Individuals may apply for a U.S. visa at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate; U.S. immigration laws and regulations will apply.

If a name has appeared on a crossing list since November 1, we understand those individuals will be permitted to cross as long as the border remains open for foreign nationals. We urge U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members who have appeared on one of these lists to cross as soon as possible – there is no guarantee the border will remain open. We continue to work in partnership with Egypt and Israel towards safe passage for U.S. citizens, LPRs, and their immediate family members.

Immediate family members of U.S. citizens include:

  • unmarried children under the age of 21, and
  • parents of U.S. citizens.

If the U.S. citizen is under 21, immediate family will also include any siblings who are also unmarried and under 21.

Immediate family members of LPRs include:

  • unmarried children under 21 years of age.

A QUICK GUIDE TO ISRAEL SIGHTS

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

Israel was always a country I wanted to go to but never made the arrangements to actually go, until an opportunity arose to join a tour through Tailor Made Tours . Since Israel is often in the news and up for discussion about how safe it is, I thought a tour would be the best option (mostly to put my parents at ease).

It turned out to be a pretty great decision! Israel is full of historical and religious sites, gorgeous desert scenery surrounding the Dead Sea and beautiful stone cities with passages full of shops and restaurants. There is so much to fit in that your tour will be a non-stop whirlwind of discovery. Here is a quick guide of what to see and do in Israel with the main spots not to miss!

1) VISIT THE SEASIDE TOWN OF CAESAREA

The tour started off in Caesarea , a coastal town on the Mediterranean that was built by Herod the Great. It is actually a National Park and includes a historic port and a Roman amphitheater that has been restored and is still used for concerts today! And apparently there are underwater ruins to see too (if you can scuba dive)!

2) EXPLORE NIMROD’S FORTRESS

Nimrod’s Fortress sits near Mount Herman and is the site of Israel’s largest crusader fortress. The ruins are well preserved and there are many tunnels and rooms to explore. Not to mention the views you get of Golan Heights!

3) VISIT THE MOUNT OF BEATITUDES

Our next stop was the Mount of Beatitudes, which is a hill that is believed to be the location of the Sermon on the Mount. Today, there is a beautiful church on the location with views of the Sea of Galilee. While the inside is not very impressive, the grounds are beautiful and a nice place to walk around.

4) TAKE A BOAT RIDE ON THE SEA OF GALILEE

Somehow, I pictured the Sea of Galilee to be a lot smaller than it actually is. While you can get great views of the sea from Tiberias, the best way to take it in is by a wooden boat. This is something not to be missed when visiting Israel for the first time!

5) WALK ALONG THE JORDAN RIVER

Just south of the Sea of Galilee is the Jordan River. While a lot of it is surrounded by greenery, there is a beautiful baptismal spot called Yardenit where people still come to get baptized in the river.

6) UNCOVER LAYERS OF CIVILIZATION AT BEIT SHE’AN

Also located in the Galilee Region of Israel are the ruins of Beit She’an. This is a fascinating place (especially for history buffs) as there have been over 20 layers of ancient civilizations found here. 20!

7) SEE THE QUMRAN CAVES

Once you hit the Dead Sea region, there are many cool things to see, one of them being the Qumran Caves. These caves, which look to be pretty hard to access, are where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.

8) HIKE UP TO MASADA

One of my favorite parts of the tour was getting to hike up Masada, a once ancient fortress and palace of King Herod located on top of a massive plateau in the middle of the desert. A palace that happens to cover three tiers of rock terraces and has the most amazing views of the Dead Sea (King Herod was not known as ‘the great builder’ for nothing!).

The massive ramp up the side of the plateau was built by the Romans so that they could attack the Jewish people who were using Masada as a refuge after Herod’s death .

9) FLOAT IN THE DEAD SEA

Between Israel and Jordan is where you will find the lowest point on Earth: the Dead Sea. The salt content is so high that your body naturally floats. But beware, that also means that the water can burn ! Your instinct is to swim, but you’ll most likely end up flopping around. It’s better to sit back, relax and use the mineral-rich mud as a self-applied spa treatment. Or you can leave it for the professionals and go to the actual Dead Sea Spa .

10) CAMEL RIDE THROUGH THE DESERT IN ISRAEL

As it was my first camel ride, I was thrilled to check off a bucket-list item of riding a camel through the desert to my Bedouin camp. The reality was that our massive tour bus drove through the desert all the way up to our Bedouin camp, parked outside, and then we took a short camel ride to nowhere, and then back again.

11) TOUCH THE WESTERN WALL

Arguably one of the most famous and sacred places in Jerusalem is the Western Wall, as it is the only fragment remaining of the Great Temple. Up close, you will notice small notes of prayers and pleas that have been wedged between the stones. The great part about our tour was that we ended up getting a private tour of the Western Wall Tunnels, which expose the entire length of The Western Wall from the inside.

12) SHOP IN JERUSALEM’S OLD CITY

The Old City in Jerusalem is comprised of four sections: The Christian Quarter, Jewish Quarter, Muslim Quarter and Armenian Quarter. Within these stone walls, you will find many historical and religious sites. It is also a great place to eat, shop and explore. We were lucky to be in Jerusalem during The Festival of Lights, where the Old City is lit up with different light displays!

13) VISIT THE MOUNT OF OLIVES

Another famous place to see, which is just outside the Old City in Jerusalem, is the Mount of Olives. The Mount of Olives was once covered in olive trees but is now covered in over 150,000 graves because many religious people believe this to be the location of the return of the Messiah. Whether you are religious or not, walking along the Mount of Olives gives you a great view of the Temple Mount.

14) ENJOY AN AFTERNOON IN TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

After a whirlwind trip around Israel, I headed back to Tel Aviv a few hours early to spend the afternoon at the beach. Tel Aviv has a really nice boardwalk and a long beach—a great place to spend time relaxing before heading home.

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade

A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

Shipping in the Port of Baltimore

Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore

Peter Eavis

By Peter Eavis and Jenny Gross

  • March 26, 2024

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.

You will visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a church that was built upon the land that Jesus was believed to have been crucified on, buried on, and ultimately resurrected on.

You will have time to take in the incredible spirituality and views, perhaps enjoy some of the local tea and fresh bread, before walking through the Christian Quarter. *

The afternoon will be free for you to do some shopping, or explore the local area before you meet up with the rest of the group for an evening meal – a local home-cooked dish with a local Palestinian family. Once you’re full, you will get the chance to enjoy some traditional entertainment by a local musician before saying good night to prep for tomorrow’s adventures!

Includes: Breakfast, Dinner, Walking Tour, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Pool of Bethesda, Church of St. Anne, Way of The Cross, St. Stephen’s Gate, Western Wall.

Another day, another early breakfast to feed you ready for the rest of the day ! After breakfast you will begin your tour of the city, you will drive out to the Mount of Olives, a place that provides breath-taking views of Jerusalem’s Old City. You will get the chance to visit the Garden of Gethsemane – known to be the place Jesus is thought to have prayed the night prior to his crucifixion. You will see the Church of All Nations, then take a small drive out of Bethlehem to take a graffiti walking tour along the barrier wall. See how many famous pieces you can spy, famous artists such as Banksy are said to line the walls with pieces for your eyes to enjoy.

You will then continue your tour towards the Manger Square, where you will stop for some food to refuel for the rest of the journey. Try some local falafel, or fresh salad before taking a visit to the Church of the Nativity.

Your journey shall continue onwards by returning to Jerusalem to visit the holocaust museum Yad Vashem, where you can take a deeply reflective walk around, taking in the terrible history that has influenced this place. Once you’re ready, you will move forward to meet with a local Rabbi for an informative discussion about the Israel-Palestine conflict, Jewish tradition and peace processes – we highly recommend prepping some questions as this will truly be a once in a lifetime discussion with someone who knows / has lived everything you could possibly want to know.

Includes: Breakfast, Mount of Olives, Separation Barrier Graffiti Tour, Church of Nativity, Yad Vashem Memorial, Local Rabbi Conversation

Today we are off to somewhere new! So time to get up, and eat up, and head out the door on our first visit to the cliff-top of Masada.

On the way to the top of Masada there are many beautiful photo opportunities, and your tour will be able to take lots of beautiful group shots at perfect locations.

Once you arrive at Masada, a cable car will take you to the fortress built by King Herod around 35 BC. This is a very important place for many Jewish people, as it is a symbol of their exile from the Holy Land, and the bravery and self-sacrifice shown.

After this visit, you will take a small drive to the shores of the Dead Sea, a place many flock to experience due to it’s heavily-salted waters which enable you to float for as long as you want, without having to swim. Spend time within the waters, relaxing and soaking in the mud which is suppose to have many healing properties.

After you have unwound in the sea, you will be taken to your accommodation for the night, a truly wonderful experience within an eco-lodge, originally part of a refugee camp and now a community initiative which aims to protect the ecology of the Dead Sea and Jordan River Valley.

After dinner, you can either relax in your room, or if light allows it, take a small sunset hike through the local farm area and enjoy some local conversation and light refreshments. A truly beautiful way to end the day.

Optional Activities: Jericho Local Hike

Overnight in Jericho

Includes: Breakfast, Dinner, Dead Sea Visit, Masada

After, you will visit Nazareth to take a stroll through the Old City, and visit the Church of the Annunciation – a place where Mary is said to have been visited by the Angel Gabriel.

We will stop here for lunch before moving our way back to Haifa for a free afternoon to do as you should wish.

Yes. All trips with RachelLikesTraveling & Adventuring for Life require vaccination due to the nature of international travel right now. It is important to look after the group you’re traveling with, and the people you may encounter in each country.

Of course! Prior to the trip commencing, a questionnaire will be sent out – if you have a roommate preference please write this in the box provided.

The majority of my community is in their 20s and 30s, there isn’t a “too old” age but 25-35 is typical. That doesn’t mean that being 39 or 43 should stop you from joining us. As long as you’re open minded to enjoying a trip with all ages, down to have A LOT of fun, and understand these are very active trips then you’re good!

Yes, for this trip travel insurance is required and proof of it will be required prior to the trip commencing. You can get several quotes from Aardy.com – Rachel’s personal favorite (from experience) is Travel Guard by AIG.

No flights are not included. People come from everywhere for this trip so we are unable to include international flights. Please read the itinerary carefully and book yourself onto flights that arrive and depart on appropriate dates from the right airport!

The minimum number of girls for this trip is 8. Once we reach 8, the 25% deposit is no longer refundable as I book our hotels, activities, etc. at that point. If we don’t reach the minimum number of people, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel your trip more than 60 days prior to the trip your 25% deposit is non-refundable but can be used for future Adventuring for Life trips minus a $100 cancellation fee. Anything over the 25% will be refunded automatically.

This trip is 100% non-refundable 60 days prior to the trip – which in this case is on 16th of February 2023.

The only way to get any money back within 60 days of a trip is if you are able to find a replacement. Rachel can definitely help try to fill the spot but there are zero guarantees we’re able to find a replacement. This is why we recommend travel insurance – incase something happens causing you to be unable to join us! Rachel highly recommends checking out Travel Insurance quotes as they can be pretty reasonable and assist in these situations.

No! Anyone from anywhere can come on a trip, we’ve had girls from England, Germany, Canada and more! You could be the first girl from your country to come with us, we would love that.

Tips for Women Travelers in Israel

For women travelers, Israel proper is not too different from Europe or the United States. Army service is universal for nonreligious Israelis, and many younger Israeli men may seem more macho and pressing than Europeans or Americans, but that's usually because you're a tourist and a woman—and all alone. Hebrew is a language that stylistically prefers directness over guile, and when translated into English, some Israelis may seem amazingly blunt, or at least brash.

It's important to remember to dress modestly when visiting holy places of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, or ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, such as Mea Shearim in West Jerusalem. In Mea Shearim, women should not wear trousers or jeans (shorts are forbidden there for men as well as women). At least knee-length skirts (the longer the better) and blouses that do not leave shoulders and upper arms exposed are strongly advised. The penalty for immodest dress can be getting spat on, pelted with pebbles, or worse. The police generally do not take action against religious Jews who attack immodest visitors to their neighborhoods.

East Jerusalem, the Old City of Jerusalem, the West Bank, Jordan, and Egypt are largely Arabic societies, and unless women travelers are guarded in their dress and behavior, there's a good chance there will be insults and unwanted advances. Women in Islamic societies do not venture far from their houses unless they are in the company of a husband, relatives, or at least one other woman; women travelers may seem to be breaking the rules of propriety simply by being alone. It is always best to try to have at least one traveling companion, male or female, with you if possible. Modest dress and behavior also helps to avoid unwanted attention. In Middle Eastern society, except in the all-tourist Sinai resorts, a woman alone, seen drinking in public, or walking on the streets with a bare midriff or shorts, is not respectable, and will often not receive even common courtesy.

Israel-Gaza latest: UK voters support ban on arms sales to Israel, poll finds; bodies of aid workers driven out of Gaza in video

Israel's military chief has said the bombing of a World Central Kitchen convoy, in which seven aid workers including three Britons were killed, was "a mistake that followed misidentification". Some of Israel's closest allies have condemned the strike.

The company which employed the three British aid workers killed in Gaza says it is working to support their families.

John Chapman, James Kirby and James Henderson were working for UK-based firm Solace Global while part of the World Central Kitchen's security team.

In a statement to social media, the company confirmed their deaths in Monday's attack "with great sadness".

"Words cannot express the depth of sympathy that we feel for the families, friends, colleagues and loved ones of those who died. We are working closely to support them at this difficult time," it said.

The firm said those who knew Mr Chapman, Mr Kirby and Mr Henderson "have expressed pride for them enabling humanitarian efforts".

The bodies of six aid workers killed in Gaza have been taken to Egypt ahead of their repatriation.

Among the bodies were those of John Chapman, James Kirby and James Henderson, the three Britons killed when the convoy they were travelling in was hit by an Israeli airstrike.

A Polish citizen, an Australian and a Canadian-American dual citizen also died while distributing food with the World Central Kitchen charity.

There is strong public support among British voters for a ban on arms sales to Israel, according to a poll.

New research by YouGov, published by The Guardian, reveals that 56% of voters back a ban on the export of arms, while 59% think Israel is violating human rights in Gaza.

The poll, commissioned by charity Action for Humanity, was carried out before three British aid workers were killed in an Israeli airstrike - but there have been growing calls since then for the UK to suspend its arms sales.

Othman Moqbel, the charity's chief executive, told The Guardian that aid agencies were "risking their lives" to deliver humanitarian aid in Gaza.

"The UK must finally act to protect those delivering life-saving aid and hold violators of international law to account," he said.

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh says his group is sticking to its ceasefire demands, including a full Israeli military withdrawal.

In a televised speech, he said: "We are committed to our demands: the permanent ceasefire, comprehensive and complete withdrawal of the enemy out of the Gaza Strip, the return of all displaced people to their homes, allowing all aid needed for our people in Gaza, rebuilding the Strip, lifting the blockade and achieving an honourable prisoner exchange deal."

The exchange he referred to would be a release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails in exchange for Israeli hostages held by militants in Gaza since 7 October.

It comes a day after Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said a new Gaza truce and hostage release proposal drafted by negotiators in Cairo had been sent to Hamas.

Mr Netanyahu has previously said Israel will keep fighting until it has destroyed Hamas's military and governing capabilities.

But the families of hostages have him under growing pressure to reach a deal. Some of them have joined protests and called for early elections to replace him.

Unicef spokesperson Tess Ingram has told Sky News she and her colleagues felt "heart-breaking devastation" after hearing about the deaths of four aid workers and their three-strong security team yesterday.

Speaking from Rafah, she said: "I was just out in the field and I can tell you personally that, for me, it was a feeling of frustration today... the conditions that we're operating in are so difficult and so dangerous.

"We're trying our best to help people but we are just hamstrung and put at risk, and this is not acceptable. It cannot be okay."

When asked if she believed Israel's insistence that it is not targeting aid workers, she said: "I'll leave that to military analysts with a better understanding of the situation.

"But I can tell you that 200 deaths of aid workers in the Gaza Strip is the highest on record anywhere in the world for a conflict for the United Nations.

"This really is unprecedented and it is not how everybody should conduct themselves in an environment such as this."

Israeli Defence Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner has told Sky News that his country's investigation into yesterday's attack on an aid convoy will be thorough.

Four aid workers from World Central Kitchen and the three Britons providing their security were killed in Gaza in the Israeli strike.

Israel has since said the "accident" was due to "misidentification" and promised a thorough and transparent inquiry.

Lt Col Lerner said those investigating are from a branch independent of the military but experienced in military operations.

They are former commanders of the IDF who have full access to all the necessary information, he said.

Asked if former IDF officers could ever be truly independent of the military, he said previous instances had "come to very clear conclusions that some of those within the military were not happy with".

He added: "I think that we need to be very realistic about the situation on the ground.

"It is a state of war, it is an unfortunate war, a reality that Israel did not ask for and we need to step up to the plate and make sure that humanitarian operations can be conducted so that we can continue our military operation and that mistakes like this don't happen again."

Israel has blamed the UN for aid shortages in Gaza.

Government spokesman David Mencer told Sky News: "The problem is not aid going in - there is a lot of aid going in... the problem is distribution.

"The United Nations has been hopelessly inefficient when it comes to distribution and their refugee agency UNRWA has been a front for Hamas."

In February, an Israeli intelligence dossier claimed 12 employees at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency were involved in Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel. The news prompted a number of countries to suspend funding for the organisation.

UN figures saying around 200 aid workers had been killed in Gaza were put to him, with the suggestion that this could also have something to do with the difficulty in distributing aid.

He disputed the figure, insisting the UN was "part of the problem here".

"We're trying our hardest now to make sure that more and more aid goes into Gaza, because we've got no problem with the ordinary Palestinian Gazans, we're not targeting them, we've got no interest in harming them.

"We're trying to get to Hamas... there's no one hungry in Hamas, that's for sure."

UK Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has called on the government to suspend arms sales to Israel after the deaths of four aid workers and their three security guards in an Israeli strike in Gaza.

Sir Ed said: "The deaths of these British aid workers in Gaza is an absolute disgrace.

"These brave people were trying to help starving families in Gaza.

"Clearly, the thought that British-made arms could have been used in strikes such as these is completely unacceptable.

"The government must take swift action to suspend arms exports to Israel.

"We must redouble our efforts to secure an immediate bilateral ceasefire."

This is a photo of a protest inside Israel's Knesset - or parliament - today by the families and supporters of Israeli hostages.

On 7 October last year, Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages.

Many were released during a short truce in November but it is thought around 100 hostages and the remains of 30 others are still being held by the Palestinian militant group.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid expressed sympathy for the family members and condemned the government for its handling of the issue.

In comments reported by the Jerusalem Post, he said: "These are the families of the hostages whom you abandoned, who became captives in the tunnels of Hamas under your watch.

"There is no other country in the world where this government would have remained in power on 8 October.

"It is a shame for generations that you remained in power, but if you're going to remain in power, then take care of the captives and their families."

Two cousins of James Kirby, one of three Britons killed in the Israeli strike on aid workers in Gaza, have spoken to Sky News.

Mr Kirby, 47, and his two colleagues were providing security for a World Central Kitchen aid mission when they were killed, along with four of the NGO's aid workers.

Adam Macguire described Mr Kirby as "selfless", adding: "He would help anybody and this was one of the reasons he felt he had to go and work with World Central Kitchen.

"He knew the dangers - he was no fool - he just knew he had to help people."
