Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Itinerary for Ultimate Java and Bali Tour

Arrival jakarta to bogor.

Your adventure begins today as you arrive in Jakarta and transfer to your hotel in Bogor. Bogor was during the Dutch colonial times, called Buitenzorg. Buitenzorg literally means without worry and you’ll come to understand why this title is so fitting! Bogor is a welcomed escape from the metropolis of Jakarta. Located at the foot of the 2,211 m high Gunung Salak, Bogor’s higher elevation also makes its temperature more pleasant than Jakarta’s. Settle in and enjoy your first evening in Bogor.

Explore Kebun Raya

Today you have ample time to visit the world-famous botanical garden: Kebun Raya. This beautiful garden of 80 hectares is home to over 15,000 different plants including 400 different kinds of palms. The grounds wrap around the former presidential palace which is a true sight to behold. A walk through the park leads you along rivers and delicate lotus ponds. At the highest point of the garden lays an atmospheric colonial tea and coffee house where you can enjoy refreshments.

Puncak Pass and Tea Plantations to Bandung

You’ll continue your journey this morning through the beautiful landscape of Java. Via the spectacular Puncak Pass at an altitude of 1,439 meters. Passing several tea plantations and Sawa's, you will soon arrive in Bandung. On the way, you’ll pass through tea plantations as far as the eye can see and can even visit a tea factory along the way! When Bandung was erased in 1920, the plan was to make a modern city, and architects were called from Europe to use the art deco style here for the design of the buildings. There are still some nice examples to be seen. The museum Geologi and the museum Asia Afrika here are both well worth a visit.

Tangkuban Perahu Volcano and Hot Springs

By car, you can get up as high as the crater of the active volcano Tangkuban Perahu. It is beautiful to walk along the rim of the crater of this 2,076m high volcano. Nearby the volcano you can take a relaxing hot bath at the natural hot springs of Ciater.

Cangkuang Temple, Naga and Pangadaran

On the way to Pangadaran, you’ll visit the only temple of West Java, Cangkuang. To get there you need to cross a lake filled with water lilies on a bamboo raft. Further on you can visit Naga, a traditional Sudanese village that still lives a step back in time. Late In the afternoon you will arrive at the small peninsula where Pangandaran is located.

Discover Pangadaran

The small nature reserve Prenanjun has a variety of wildlife such as porcupines, deer, and cheeky monkeys.

In the morning you’ll leave the south coast and drive up to the mountains to the city of Wonosobo. Wonosbo lays on the edge of the 2,000 m height situated Dieng Plateau. The night here can be cold thus a sweater can come in handy!

Java’s Temples and Mountain Paths to Borobodur

In the early morning, the mysterious landscape of Dieng is at its best. The oldest Hindu temples of Java appear serene from the mist. A walk down along mountain paths with beautiful views on the slopes and along the vegetable gardens of the farmers is hard on the knees but very pleasant. A stunning sunset this evening will be the icing on the cake!

In the early morning, you can visit Borobudur at its best when it is still quiet as the day visitors have not yet arrived. The morning light is great for photographing this awe-inspiring World Heritage Site of Borobudur. Built-in the 8th century, this stunning artistic and architectural marvel lay undiscovered until 1815. Before you head on to Yogyakarta you will visit the nearby Pawon temple, which is in the middle of a typical village, and Mendut temple with its magnificent statue of the Buddha Sakyamuni.

Mid-day you will continue to Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java.

Free Day in Yogyakarta

Many optional excursions (not included) await you today! Opt to take a city tour with a cycle rickshaw (becak) to explore the Sultan’s Palace which is located in the heart of the old city. The Hindu temple complex is of stunning beauty and devoted to the gods Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. You will check-in at the hotel in Solo by midday. In the afternoon you can visit the Sultan Palace. Here a local guide will show you around. At walking distance from the Sultan palace, there is the Batik Museum Danar Hadi. This private museum houses a great collection of excellent Batik, antique and Royal textiles from Java and China etc. A guide will lead you to the 11 rooms with all kinds of Batik. At the end and in the back of the museum you see about 200 people working in a big hall processing the batik textiles using different techniques.

In the evening there are great dining opportunities in the city. Interesting is the town centre where the night market is put up around the Alun Alun- the city centre.

You can watch the sunset at spectacular Bromo this evening.

Sunrise from Mt Bromo and Continue to Kalibaru

Travel time today is approximately 7 hours.

Drive along the north coast of East Java to Banyuwangi today to reach Java’s east coast port. Here you’ll be fascinated by locals diving into the water off high construction poles to fetch the coins dropped into the water by passengers. A short boat journey with the local ferry will then bring you to Bali, the fabled Island of Gods and Demons. Travel time today is approximately 5 hours.

Adventures in Lovina

A day with lots of optional activities for you to choose from (not included). If you want to see dolphins, prepare to get up early, and go out on the sea by small boat. Or for excellent snorkelling and diving head to Menjangan (Deer) Island, part of the West Bali National Park. Or take a step back in time and visit the old Colonial houses or the only Buddhist temple there is on Bali. The warm springs of Banjar, finally, are also worth visiting.

Gigit Waterfall and Bratan Mountain Lake

First, you visit the Gitgit Waterfall and proceed on to Bratan Mountain Lake, which is situated at a height of 1,240 meters. On neighboring Java, watch the sun rise over a pair of towering volcanoes, and take in the grandeur of ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples. If your ideal travel mates are four-legged, feathered, or scaled, extend your visit and explore Komodo, which some have called the “Galapagos of Southeast Asia.”

  • 4 dinners with beer or wine
  • 1 food tasting

Included highlights

bali java tour

Board your overnight flight to Bali today.

Welcome to Indonesia! This evening, settle in to your hotel in Ubud, on the island of Bali.

Meet up with a local guide and get to know Ubud, a peaceful, spiritual town on the island of Bali that’s known for its temples and wealth of cultural traditions. The emerald rice fields and lush jungles that surround Ubud are among Bali’s most famous landscapes.

  • Stroll through the traditional farming village of Subak Guliang and witness daily rituals of rural life unfolding around you.
  • Visit a rice farm to learn about the complexities of rice production and the importance of the grain, which Balinese people view as a gift from God and a symbol of life.
  • Enjoy a tasting of coconut water, and pick up rice-cooking tips you can practice when you’re home.

Make your way into the rice field and sit down for a scenic welcome lunch. Get to know your fellow travelers and Tour Director as traditional Rindik music—a softly percussive style played on bamboo instruments—hums delicately in the background. Afterward, discover more Balinese traditions.

  • Join a hands-on workshop, during which you’ll prepare your own canang sari—a small offering of gratitude locals prepare daily for Hindu deities.
  • With your basket and offering ready, don a sarong and sash and enjoy a walk to the farming village’s temple.
  • At the temple, meet one of the village priests, who will bless you and your fellow travelers after you’ve placed your offerings.
  • Depart the rice farm and visit Ubud Monkey Forest, a lush forest and temple complex that’s home to more than 700 long-tailed macaques.

Begin the day with a personalized morning yoga class. Then, try your hand at making traditional Balinese dishes during a cooking class taught by an expert chef. Join your fellow travelers and enjoy the lunch you’ve prepared together.

Later, pay a visit to some of the area’s most unique and important sites.

  • Stop by Goa Gajah, or the Elephant Cave temple—a mysterious Hindu archaeological site just outside of the city whose menacing, carved-stone entrance has been likened to a demon’s mouth.
  • Visit the Holy Spring Temple, or Tampak Siring, to learn about water’s symbolic significance to Balinese people and to take part in a water purification ceremony in the temple’s cleansing pool.

Spend a free evening in Ubud or add an excursion.

Please note: A change of clothes and/or a bathing suit is recommend for the water purification ceremony.

Our tour starts late afternoon in Yogyakarta. Situated almost exactly halfway along the length of Java, in an area considered to be the heartland of the Javanese, Yogakarta is home to some of the island's oldest traditions and blessed with a rich, fertile soil from the volcanic ash. It is the cultural capital of Java, with a real mixture of cultural influences, including Hindu and Buddhist temples, dating from the 8th century, Islamic Palaces from the 18th century and Dutch colonial architecture that harks back to the days when the Netherlands held much of Java in its imperialistic grip.

For those arriving on time our Leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for the welcome meeting and for those that wish, there is the chance to go out for dinner.

There are no other activities planned today, so you are free to arrive in Yogyakarta at any time. If you would like to receive an airport transfer today, you will need to arrive into Yogyakarta International Airport, approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from our hotel. Should you miss the welcome meeting, your Leader will inform you of any essential information over breakfast on day two.

If your flight arrives earlier in the day, perhaps you might choose to take a motorised rickshaw to visit Kraton Palace and Taman Sari Water Castle. A Ramayana ballet performance is also a great way to learn about local traditions and culture. If you'd like to add on extra days in Yogyakarta before our tour starts, contact us to book accommodation.

Adhisthana Hotel Yogyakarta (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Single room available

Swimming pool available, meals provided: none.

After breakfast, we drive to Kota Gede, which is the Old Town of Yogyakarta. Once the home of aristocrats and royal merchants, this heritage district is a maze of little alleys dotted with mosaic-tiled houses, temples, and workshops. This morning, we will have the chance to learn about Batik making and have a go at it. Kota Gede is also the centre of the local silver industry which will give us the opportunity to watch silversmiths at work.

We return to our hotel after lunch to relax and unwind, before heading later in the afternoon to the beating heart of the city: Jalan Malioboro. The many shops, local restaurants and vibrant markets will set the scene for our street food tour. We will have the chance to sample many of the local specialties such as bakso, a meatball soup made with either meat or fish and gudeg, a traditional Yogyakartan dish made of stewed jackfruit, palm sugar and coconut milk.

Meals Provided: Breakfast

This morning we head west to Borobudur, the largest and most impressive Buddhist monument in the southern hemisphere. Constructed in the 8th century this incredible monument, a petrified vision of the Buddhist cosmos, was lost for 900 years when Mount Merapi erupted and covered Borobudur in a layer of volcanic ash. The structure itself is immense, a gigantic Buddhist stupa constructed from two million blocks that covers an area of 200sq metres and rises some 34.5 metres above the Kedu Plain. Older by nearly half a century than the site at Prambanan, Borobudur is believed to have been built on the top of the foundations for what was originally a temple dedicated to Shiva, abandoned by the Hindu Sanjayas when their Buddhist rivals the Saliendras swept through the Malay peninsula during the 8th century.

A combination of earthquakes, subsidence, and the mass migration of the Javanese to the east of the island saw the temple abandoned sometime during the 9th century, to be rediscovered again later by the British. Substantial work has been carried out to salvage the exquisite carvings and designs that adorn the structure, and we can wander through the site today and marvel at the incredible detail of its narrative panels, which detail everything from Buddhist doctrines to the daily life of the Javanese.

Later we drive out of the city, heading for the Hindu temple complex of the Prambanan Plain. This remarkable area is home to an incredible array of temples and palaces from the 8th and 9th centuries. We stay here to watch the sunset before returning to Yogyakarta, before heading back to the city for our last night in Yogyakarta.

Leaving Yogyakarta this morning we make the short transfer to the station where we board the express train to the Javan city of Malang . The Malioboro Express takes around four hours to rumble through the heart of Java, sweeping past lush rice paddies, rural villages and through lively provincial towns that buzz with daily life. The carriages are air-conditioned with comfortable reclinable seats, power sockets and there are toilets at the end of each carriage.

The train is due into the city of Malang in the late afternoon. After some free time to freshen up, we head out this evening for a short orientation tour of Malang's charming colonial architecture, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

Regent's Park Hotel (or similar)

We make an early start this morning to visit the flower market in Malang before driving around 4 hours to Cemoro Lawang to bring us closer to Mount Bromo. We must change our vehicle for the last part of our journey as we head off the main road. We arrive in time for a late lunch break, after which our tour leader will take us for a three hour trek through the Sand Sea towards Mount Bromo.

An early night is recommended in order to fully enjoy the rewarding Mount Bromo experience first thing in the morning.

Lava View Lodges (or similar)

Grade: Simple Hotel

Today, in the early hours of the morning, we take an excursion, by jeep and on foot, to the slopes of Mount Penanjakan (2770m) to marvel at the spectacular views of Mount Bromo crater at sunrise. Depending on the time of the year, we may choose another peak as viewpoint to avoid the crowds.

We drive across the Sand Sea of the caldera towards the crater itself, admiring the beautiful pink glow of our surroundings as the sun slowly rises. Volcanoes have mystified man since the earliest of times, and with this breathtaking scene laid out before us this morning it is easy to understand why.

After this mesmerising experience, we go back to our hotel for breakfast before taking the road to Kalibaru. We aim to arrive at our comfortable cottages for a late lunch and enjoy the afternoon at rest by the pool surrounded by a tropical garden to recover from our rewarding early start.

Overall driving time approx. 6 hours.

Kalibaru Cottages (or similar)

We set off this morning to explore the plantation's extensive grounds on foot. This area is known locally to produce excellent nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, cocoa, coffee, and coconuts. We learn how each crop is grown and harvested, along with a demonstration of how palm sugar is processed, a staple ingredient in this part of the world. Following our exploration, we will enjoy a local lunch on the plantation.

In the afternoon we continue our journey east, driving to the port town of Ketapang. It is from here we wave goodbye to Java and catch a ferry to our next Indonesian island, Bali. Once on the Hindu Island, we continue by bus, driving along the scenic coastal road to the relaxed beach-side town of Pemuteran.

Kubuku Lodge (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Lodge

Pemuteran is a laid-back village located on Bali's northern coastline, tucked far away from the beach hot spots in the south. Its lack of surf means it's not a popular haunt for surfers either, but instead it is a perfect secluded spot for swimming and snorkelling. Pemuteran and its villagers have witnessed the effect of over-tourism in other resorts in Bali and are taking active steps to avoid the same pitfalls. They have set up a community-wide initiative which tightly controls any building and development, and they operate a fascinating environmental project they call 'Bio Rocks'. Before being made illegal, vast swathes of the local coral had been destroyed by dynamite fishing, so the coral is now being grown back with the aid of a low-voltage electricity supply, returning at a rate estimated to be five times faster.

Today has been left free to explore the village or to relax on the beach and soak up Pemuteran's laid-back atmosphere. An optional half-day snorkelling trip is the best way to enjoy the crystal-clear waters and discover its underwater wonders.

Today we go deeper into West Bali National Park. The role of mangrove swamps is crucial to prevent coastal erosion and are great at protecting inland areas in case of storms and tsunamis and our visit will contribute to its conservation. This 3-hour easy hike takes us into the monsoon forest and thanks to a local guide, we learn about wild medicinal herbs and with a bit of luck, meet some of the inhabitants of the jungle such as monitor lizards, wild chicken, birds, and monkeys!

After lunch we continue along the scenic coastal road before turning inland. The road begins to twist and turn through the forest until we reach the small farming community of Munduk. The town enjoys an enviable position sitting higher in altitude than most of the island, and the cooler climes offer some respite from Bali's humidity. Munduk is home to a community of farmers that serve the myriad of surrounding plantations and rice paddies, and we hope to arrive in time for a sundowner as we climb to a viewpoint to watch the day turn to night and the sun dip into the forests below.

Puri Lumbung (or similar)

As far as tourism is concerned, Munduk very much sits in the shadows of its more popular cousin Ubud. Its small village offers few familiar concessions to modern tourists, but its surrounding countryside hides towering waterfalls, lush rice paddies and colourful plantations, and this morning we set off on foot to explore these surroundings. Our walk takes us through plantations of banana, cocoa, and coffee, where we learn how the locals grow, harvest and sell these vital crops to support their families, and have been doing so for generations. We continue our walk through forests before reaching the impressive Red Coral and Labuhan Kebo waterfalls, which offer a great place to break for a snack and for photo opportunities. We continue back to Munduk village where we end the morning's walk, a total of around four hours and six kilometres.

After lunch, we continue our drive down through the island's lush centre to the beating heart of Bali's bohemian culture, Ubud.

Overall driving time approx. 3 hours.

Sri Aksata Ubud Resort (or similar)

After being picked up at our hotel, we will be driven to the start point of our bike ride. From here, we will head downhill along off the beaten track village roads. We will immerse ourselves in the typical Balinese daily life and relish the captivating countryside scenery. Our route will take us through lush, forested areas and plantations brimming with Balinese crops. As we continue, we'll pass through small villages and traverse lush-green rice paddies. Along the way we will visit a Balinese home, an up-close and personal glimpse of how the Balinese live their lives. Depending on the season, we might take a short walk through the rice paddies, witnessing villagers engaged in the age-old practices of planting and harvesting rice. The ride is 3 hours long and mostly on downhill or flat terrain. A support vehicle with limited seats is available too. We will enjoy lunch served at the local restaurant before returning to town.

The rest of the day is free to further explore Ubud. There's the option to visit some of the various handicraft workshops for which Ubud is famous or venture inside Monkey Forest. Balinese art reflects many of the traditions and culture of the islands, recounting religious and historical epics, elements of puppet theatre and even real life, and in Ubud you can find some of the finest examples of the work anywhere in the archipelago. In the evening there is the option to see a Kecak and fire dance show.

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Lunch

We start our day with an orientation walk around Tegalalang's rice paddy fields, learning about local farming techniques and the life of the farmers here. The sheer beauty of these rice terraces and their innovative irrigation systems are an unmissable highlight while in Bali.

Later this morning we leave Ubud and drive towards our final stop at Sanur on Bali's southeast coast, where we find white sand beaches. Along the way we will stop over at Goa Gajah cave and Tegenungan for a scenic view of its waterfall.

Sanur has a village feel and while there are several hotels and resorts it retains a certain charm. There are plenty of small shops for souvenir shopping, a selection of restaurants both on the main street and on the palm fringed beach front.

Puri Sading (or similar)

Sanur is arguably one of the best places in Bali to see the sun come up. For whoever feels like an early start, the tour leader will take you on a walk along the quiet beach and will help you find the best spot for watching sunrise. The rest of the day is free at leisure.

Later in the afternoon, we go on a wander around Sindhu Beach Market. Here, we soak up the lively atmosphere while enjoying an aperitif and local nibbles in Indonesian style. To follow, there will be the chance to have a farewell dinner.

Our tour ends after breakfast, but depending on flight times there may be the opportunity to enjoy the beach this morning for one last time.

If you wish the extend your stay to explore Bali further, your tour leader can assist you with booking an East or South Bali day tour. Please contact us to arrange additional post-tour accommodation.

Travel times can be long, and traffic can be heavy and slow, especially over holiday periods.
  • You will be expected to carry your own bags onto and off trains, and for short distances (porters are available in most stations at an extra charge).
  • Dress standards in Java are more conservative than other areas of Indonesia. It's a good idea to take a sarong along with you, or to cover knees and shoulders for the temple visits included on this trip.
  • To climb mountains for sunrise, we must start very early! Your sunrise climb of Mt Bromo and Mt Batur start around 3 am. This means you'll be walking over some gravel and volcanic rock in the dark. Head torches, a rain jacket, some warm clothing and good walking shoes are a must. The view at sunrise is well worth the effort, especially if the weather's fine!
  • Accommodation at Seloliman Nature Reserve, near Mt Bromo and Mt Batur is in basic guesthouses. Set on the edge of a tropical forest the Seloliman Reserve embraces philosophies of environmental education, and we are sure you will get a good nights sleep. The guesthouses at Mt Bromo and Mt Batur are close to the base of each mountain, to reduce the travelling time to start our sunrise walks, and give you a little bit more sleep.

Selamat datang! Welcome to Indonesia. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm today. If you arrive early, why not check out some of Jakarta's interesting museums, such as the Wayang (puppetry), Balai Seni Rupa (fine arts) and maritime museums. The National Museum is great for first-time visitors. For a city monuments, don't miss the Monas (National Monument) dedicated to the spirit of the Indonesian people.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Museums in Indonesia are closed on Mondays, if you would like to visit any museums it is recommended to do so on day 1.

Familiarise yourself with the city on a full-day tour with your local guide. Take in Sunda Kelapa port – where the Dutch first landed, temple-filled Chinatown and the old town of Batavia. See Si Jagur – an old Portuguese cannon ornately decorated with a disguised meaning. Visit a Chinese mansion (Chandra Naya) and gain an insight into the beautiful Peranakan architecture. Wander about Fatahillah Square, then explore the religious side of the city at Cathedral Church and Istiqlal Mosque – the largest mosque in South East Asia.

  • Jakarta - City tour

Today there's some distance to cover, so you will spend large chunk of the day travelling. Travel by train to Purwokerto City (approximately 5.5 hours), then take a private minibus to Pangandaran (approximately 3 hours). Pangandaran is a small fishing village popular with visitors looking for a coastal escape. The Penanjung Nature Reserve on the adjoining peninsula boasts some impressive flora and fauna, which you’ll see some of tomorrow!

Set off on a tour of the local surrounds, villages, cottage industries and the impressive Green Canyon. Your day trip begins with a stop at a local market to check out the produce and home industries such as palm sugar and rice cracker production, as well as the famous Javanese wayang golek (traditional wooden puppets). Then you'll continue to the Green Canyon. Hop aboard your boat and travel upriver (approximately 30 minutes) through superb jungle scenery, before stopping for a swim up in the canyon itself. This spot, whose water is as green as its name suggests, is a popular hangout for locals, so take the opportunity to interact. Your day will take you to a nearby beach where you can have a break for lunch and swim in the afternoon before heading back to your accommodation.

  • Pangandaran - Green Canyon
  • Pangandaran - Village & cottage industries tour
  • Pangandaran - Guided trek in coastal reserve - IDR200000

Please note that, after times of heavy rain, the water runs brown rather than green. Weak swimmers are advised to continue wearing their life jackets for swimming in the Canyon.

Head inland by private minibus (approximately 1 hour) before catching a train to Yogyakarta (approximately 4 hours). This town is one of South East Asia's real gems. It's Java's cultural heart, has a great atmosphere and is an Intrepid favourite. From batik workshops to the nearby Hindu and Buddhist temples, Yogya offers a great array of cultural avenues to explore.

Rise early to catch the morning light and avoid the crowds at Candi Borobudur – the largest Buddhist structure on earth. This magnificent World Heritage-listed site is set in a tranquil park. As you approach, you'll see the enigmatic temple rise before you, looming amongst the tropical foliage. With your local guide, follow the route of ancient pilgrims, circling the mandala-shaped structure from the early realms towards Nirvana. It's truly one of South East Asia's treasures. Afterwards, enjoy an afternoon of free time. You might like to visit one of Yogya's other heritage temples – this time perhaps of the Hindu faith. Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu complex in Java. This evening, perhaps catch a performance of the epic Ramayana Ballet – your leader will be able to check dates and availability for you.

  • Borobudur - Temple Tour
  • Yogyakarta - Prambanan temple complex - IDR525000
  • Yogyakarta - City Walking Tour - IDR300000
  • Yogyakarta - Silver jewellery making course - IDR300000
  • Yogyakarta - Ramayana Ballet - IDR450000
  • Yogyakarta - Prambanan visit, Ramayana Ballet and Dinner - IDR1000000

Pedal out of the city on a cycling tour (approximately 6 km) through the rice fields and countryside surrounding Yogyakarta. See the locals in this area making various goods, from bricks to tofu and tempe. As well as palms and lush green grasslands, you will see the odd burst of yellow and pink flowers by the side of the road, which make for great photo opportunities. This cycling tour is on relatively flat ground, so it won't be too strenuous. There will be ample time to take in all the interesting scenes of slow-paced local life. You will then have a free afternoon today and there are many activities for you to choose in Yogyakarta. Perhaps a cooking class to learn about Indonesian cuisine or salute to the sun with a yoga class – there is something for everyone!

  • Yogyakarta - Countryside cycling tour
  • Yogyakarta - Cooking course - IDR250000
  • Yogyakarta - Yoga Class - IDR60000

If you do not wish to cycle your leader can arrange a motorized becak. A small fee of IDR 100,000 will be required for this service and is paid for locally.

Travel by train (approximately 4.5 hours) before transferring on a minivan (approximately 1 hour) to Seloliman Nature Reserve. The peaceful Seloliman Nature Reserve is situated on the slopes of the sacred volcano of Mt Penanggungan. Meet some of the volunteers working at the Seloliman Environmental Education Centre and eat delicious, locally grown organic produce cooked by their staff. The centre's accommodation is atmospheric, even with open-air bathrooms built in harmony with the surrounding forest, so take this opportunity to relax. This is a beautiful spot to appreciate nature – be sure to sit under the stars tonight and take in the ambience of what’s around.

  • Guesthouse (1 night)
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Visit
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Lunch
  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Environmental Education Centre Dinner

Please note our accommodation tonight is in basic bungalows, with very simple bathroom facilities. Due to the jungle location there are often many insects, so make sure you bring insect repellent.

Join reserve staff on a walk around the reserve, learning about the local environment and the Javanese tradition of herbal medicine (approximately 2.5 hours). You'll gain an insight into the region’s flora and fauna, traditional farming methods, rice production and the mini hydroelectricity plant. Finish up with a traditional jamu demonstration and a tasting of this Javanese herbal medicine. Continue on to Mt Bromo – the timeless homeland of the Tenggerese (approximately 4 hours). The still-active volcano – standing at 2329 metres – is the most well-known of the Tengger massif. This region is also the homeland of the Tenggerese and the steep, cultivated hills of the Tengger Valley. Retire early tonight in preparation for tomorrow's early start.

  • Seloliman Nature Reserve - Guided Walk & Herbal Drink Tasting

Your accommodation tonight is in villas and each villa has two 2 rooms with a shared lounge room and a shared bathroom.

Please note that the jeeps used on this day are not fitted with seat belts.

Your early start today (around 3 am) will be well worth it; trust us. First, drive to a lookout point in jeeps for sunrise over the sea of sands. If the weather is clear, the sunrise over this eerie sea of volcanoes is an unforgettable experience. Afterwards descend in your jeep to the sea of sands and climb up to the volcano crater to take a peek inside. The ascent is not too difficult (approximately 45 minutes), but it can be very cold, so don't forget to bring extra layers of clothing. It's also worth bringing a scarf to cover your nose and mouth, as it can get dusty. Return to the hotel to freshen up and then depart midmorning to Kalibaru in a private minivan (approximately 5.5 hours). You'll stop for lunch en route, then arrive in the afternoon, with time to relax by the pool or perhaps indulge in a local massage.

  • Resort (1 night)
  • Mt Bromo - Sunrise climb

Mt Bromo is one of the highlights of the trip but it’s very popular, so during holiday periods expect it to be crowded. At times of increased volcanic activity, the crater of Mt Bromo is closed. There may be amendments to your sunrise hike and this portion of the trip depending on necessary safety precautions.

Head out early in the morning to tour nearby coffee, cocoa and rubber plantations. You'll see how rubber is processed, how coffee is dried, and, if there's time, how cocoa is fermented. Before you set off, enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and snack on fried banana. Travel by minibus to the far eastern end of Java – Gilimanuk (approximately 3 hours). There is often a lot of heavy traffic on this stretch of road as it's the main entry point for Bali, so there may be some delays. Next you'll board a ferry across the Java Strait (approximately 1 hour), before boarding another minibus for a journey along the west coast of Bali (approximately 1 hour). Travel on to Pemuteran – your destination for the next two nights.

  • Kalibaru - Coffee, Cocoa & Rubber Plantation Tour

Enjoy a relaxing day in this gorgeous beachside location. Maybe start the day with a relaxing yoga class and then explore the local area at your own pace. You could visit the surrounding monkey-filled temples, go swimming off the coast, or think about booking in a snorkelling or diving expedition to the turquoise and marine life-rich waters of Menjangan Island. Otherwise, simply sit back, relax and watch the fishermen go about their day-to-day on one of the beaches.

  • Pemuteran - Yoga lesson (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR400000
  • Pemuteran - Jungle trekking (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR875000
  • Pemuteran - Snorkelling (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR850000
  • Pemuteran - Temple tour (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR700000
  • Pemuteran - Cooking class (min 2 travellers, price per person from) - IDR350000

Make the journey to Ubud (approximately 5 hours). En route, stop in at Taman Ayun Temple, taking in the impressive Balinese architecture while you stroll around the tranquil gardens. Ubud is Bali's main arts and cultural centre – a thriving centre of markets, shops and warungs and close by to verdant rice terraces and lush jungles. With nature and wellbeing at its core, Ubud is a highland haven of Bali. It's a wonderful place to experience the magic that has made Bali such a popular travel destination. Tonight, why not get a group of your travel pals together and find a local place to eat some traditional Balinese cuisine.

  • Mengwi - Taman Ayun Temple

Enjoy a free day to soak up the relaxed atmosphere of Ubud, before your continuing meeting at 6pm. Perhaps head to one of the most popular landmarks of Ubud – Pura Taman Saraswati. The most notable feature of the pura is its lotus pond and water garden, marking the outer area of the actual temple. Located in central Ubud, it’s an easy walk from your hotel. Ubud is full of boutique shops and cafes serving wonderful organic produce. It is the perfect place to just wonder and stop for a bite to eat watching the hustle and bustle go by without you.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and you're welcome to attend, as this is a great chance to meet your new fellow travellers. Afterwards, perhaps head out to for a group meal at one of the delicious local restaurants.

Start the day with a guided walking tour around Ubud with your local leader (about 2.5 hours). Gain an insight into daily village life as you pass lush rice fields, an alang alang valley (type of wild grass used to make the roof of traditional buildings) and stop by a Balinese home for coffee and experience the traditional Balinese offering. The tour ends in central Ubud, where you'll have time to explore the many cafes, galleries and shops on your own. In the evening, sit down and enjoy a traditional Kecak dance performance. Driven not by musical instruments, but by human chanting, this fascinating theatrical performance is considered a highlight by many of our travellers.

  • Ubud - Campuhan Ridge & Village walk
  • Bali - Kecak Fire Dance
  • Ubud - Home visit, local coffee & Balinese offering
  • Ubud - Saraswati Temple Lotus Garden - Free
  • Ubud - Whitewater rafting - IDR740000

Please note that when Kecak dance performance is not available, the dance will be replaced by other Balinese dance performance.

Today you’ll explore the area from a different angle – from the saddle of a bike. Enjoy a 2.5-hour tour through backstreets, villages and rice fields. It’s a relatively easy ride – much of the route is downhill – and there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photos or a brief rest. You’ll also stop to check out some small, intricately carved temples, before concluding your bike tour back in Ubud. After refuelling with lunch, head for the hills to the village of Undisan, via private minivan. Set against a backdrop of Bali's highest peak, Mt Agung, the peaceful village of Sidemen is proof that Bali still has some pockets that are untouched by tourism.

  • Ubud - Bayung Gede (Kahyangan) Village to Tampak Siring cycling tour

Today’s driving time is approximately 2 hours.

Bicycle helmets are included on your ride, and there is a support vehicle if the going gets too tough. Keep in mind, it's a little cooler up here, thanks to the elevation. You may need to pack some warmer clothes.

Take a morning walk (approximately 2 hours) around Undisan's rice terrraces, visiting the craftspeople of the traditional trade, village temples and enjoy a traditional 'bungkus' lunch with refreshing coconut. The walk is a great chance to take in the beautiful scenery before we bid a farewell to Undisan and make tracks to Sibetan Village . You’ll be given a special welcome by the chief of the village, then check into your homestay accommodation before enjoying some free time in the afternoon. You might like to explore the traditional village a little or simply just relax and take in the atmosphere here. Alternatively, you could take on an optional cooking class and learn the secret ingredients and spices of the traditional cuisine here. This evening, you’ll enjoy some time spent with the locals and be treated to a typical dinner of salak (snake fruit), prepared for you by the villagers.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Undisan - Village tour
  • Undisan - Traditional Village Lunch
  • Local community cooking class - IDR150000

Today’s driving time is approximately 30 minutes.

This morning, you’ll enjoy a guided walk through an ancient Salak Plantation with the opportunity to interact with the local community. Here, you’ll see cultural heritage plants – the remains of a white mango tree which was first planted in Sibetan in the 16th century as well as a Jaka Moding Plant (a type of palm tree) which is a relic plant. You’ll tuck into Tipat Blayag (Rhombus) for lunch; rice wrapped in young coconut leaves, combined with side dishes of chicken and vegetables. After some time exploring the village and surrounds on foot, you’ll take to four wheels for a journey higher into the mountains, driving along the crater rim road to a fishing village on the edge of Lake Batur. Volcanic Mt Batur (1717 metres/5633 feet) sits inside a stark and spectacular caldera and with Lake Batur below, it's a stunning sight. The lake supports the local fishing industry, while many of the villagers work as guides for the volcano climb. Your accommodation for the evening is in a great location to start tomorrow's early morning trek without extra travelling time.

  • Local community Salak plantation walk

There are often mosquitos and bugs around Lake Batur, so be sure to pack your insect repellent. Long pants and sleeves will also be useful to protect from insects.

It’s a very early start today – you’ll wake bright and early at around 3 am to begin the 1.5 to 2-hour walk to the summit of Mt Batur in order to reach the top before sunrise. Trust us, it’s worth the effort. On a clear morning, it's possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok's Mt Rinjani. The view of the gorgeous sunrise over the valleys of Bali may well be the most memorable part of your trip. Do keep in mind, however, that the weather can be unpredictable and sometimes the view is obscured by clouds. After descending the volcano, there's an option to soak in hot springs with fantastic views over the lake and caldera. Then make the journey from the mountains to the small coastal town of Lovina, made famous by its dolphins that patrol the coast. It's also a great spot for fine food, traditional massages and yoga – just what the doctor ordered after today’s epic mountain climb.

  • Mt Batur - Sunrise volcano climb
  • Mt Batur - Hot springs - IDR300000

Today’s driving time is approximately 3 hours.

The summit trail starts more easily, while heading to the crater it climbs steeply with switchbacks over volcanic rocks and gravel. A good level of fitness is required. The path can be slippery, particularly after rain so good shoes are essential. Please bring your headtorch and a warm layer to wear at the summit. The climb may be cancelled during heavy rain and unsafe conditions.

Explore a traditional market in the morning first and then enjoy a day of snorkelling amongst Menjangan Island’s coral reef, part of the Bali Barat National Park. On the way back from your undersea adventures, you’ll stop for a soak at Banjar Hot Springs, a small spring popular with locals. In the afternoon, stop in to enjoy a tasty cup of coffee with a difference at Global Kafe, a diner whose profits support the Global Village Foundation, providing wheelchairs and mobility aids for people with disabilities and assisting those with illnesses with their medical costs. Tonight, head to Ibu Wayan's to learn about Balinese cuisine before sitting down to a home-cooked meal.

  • Lovina - Banjar Hot Springs
  • Lovina - Global Kafe Visit
  • Lovina - Menjangan Island Reef snorkeling tour
  • Lovina - Seririt Market visit
  • Lovina - Yoga class - IDR120000

You will travel 1.5 to 2 hours by road (each way) and then take a boat ride of around 20 mins into the National Park at Menjangan.

After a storm or erratic weather there can be a problem with rubbish in the water around Menjangan, and also throughout Bali's coastal areas. Intrepid does not support dolphin-watching trips as an optional activity, as there is little regulation of this activity. Previous travellers have raised concerns over many motorised boats pursuing dolphin pods.

This morning we’ll wave goodbye to Lovina and make our way to Sanur. Along the way, we’ll visit Gitgit waterfall and Lake Bratan before continuing to Sanur to enjoy some free time in the afternoon. Perhaps, enjoy a stroll along Bali's first beachfront walk, watch the fishermen in the shallows or kick back and relax at one of the beachside restaurants. Get a feel for the traditions and local customs which are well maintained here. Ancient temples are also easily accessible – just a short distance away from the beach.

  • Bedugul - Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple
  • Gitgit - Waterfall walk

Today’s total driving time is approximately 3.5 hours.

Your trip comes to an end after breakfast today. You may like to stay on for a few extra days to make the most of your visit here. You may want to take a surfing lesson, bike tour or one of the many other activities on offer. Please speak with your tour leader about this for more details.

  • Balinese Massage - IDR150000
  • Sanur - Yoga Lesson - IDR120000

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, yogyakarta – the journey’s beginnings.

Yogyakarta possesses the heart of the island of Java, central to artistic heritage and Javanese language. Customs continue unadulterated, protected by the sultan, whose royal palace retains a deep connection to traditional life. Your flight lands at Adisutjipto International Airport. Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim and escorts you into the wealth of urban life in the center of the city. Malls and cafes mix with archeological attractions. You take the time to settle into your luxurious hotel erected during the colonial era. The interior décor fuses traditional Javanese style with classical European comforts, along with an elegant swimming pool that feels like a private spa and resort.

Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby and takes you to a batik workshop to learn the traditional art. The workshop fills with the aroma of wood shavings and paint. The colors from drying textiles bring rainbow hues to the forefront of the workspace. Your instructor explains the art of producing colored designs by applying wax to the textiles before dying them, leaving parts of the cloth untouched. After a quick demonstration, your instructor hands you some fabric. The cloth is soft in your hands, and the wax is firm but pliable. You find a basic traditional pattern of swirling circles bordered by straight lines, allowing you to create a stunning combination of vibrant colors bursting from the different shapes.

What's Included:

Yogyakarta – Out Amongst the City

In the morning, the aroma of fresh rambutan overtakes the rich scent of freshly brewed Javanese coffee. The exotic fruit reminds you of your tropical location. After breakfast, your local guide meets you at the hotel eager to take you on a private tour of the city’s historical and cultural splendor beginning with the sultan’s palace known as Kraton . The compound was erected in the 18th century, complete with grand chambers set inside a series of surrounding walls. The complex houses up to 25,000 people, containing a marketplace, shops, mosques, and a bustling silver industry. Street vendors sell pineapple and oranges along the outer ring with the innermost group of structures housing the current sultan.

Your guide points out the European flourishes along the interior. However, the exterior design remains a stunning example of opulent Javanese architecture. The connection to heritage is palpable in the city, especially at the heart of the palace complex where elderly statesmen wear traditional Javanese dress. Two sacred banyan trees grow in the northern square, dating back to the days of feudal Java when petitioners in white robes would sit in the trees’ shade hoping to catch the eye of the passing king. You continue to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, displaying thousands of impressive stone carvings.

Surakarta – Shrines and Temples of the past

In the morning, you sip a refreshing cup of Javanese coffee, enjoying the rich flavors of the roasted beans grown and cultivated on an Indonesian island. The accompanying aroma of fresh pineapple creates a surprisingly harmonious combination. Your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby after the meal and leads you to the 9th century Hindu temples at Prambanan. The UNESCO World Heritage Site contains shrines dedicated to the Hindu Trinity, known as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple compound is located less than 10 miles outside of Yogyakarta and was erected as Bandung Bondowoso’s proof of love for Princess Loro Jonggrang. A mystical ambiance sweeps through the stone figures, emanating from the textured towers looming above the grounds.

The temples contain both Shaivite and Buddhist architectural and spiritual elements due to the marriage of two dynasties. You make your way to the Shiva temple to view the outstanding examples of Hindu art. The tower reaches a height of 130 feet tall and houses a collection of statues dedicated to Shiva and Durga, an invincible divinity. The sporadic trees add context to the immense height of the numerous shrines. The three main structures contain bas-reliefs telling the narrative of the epic Bhagavata Purana and Ramayana, carved along the inner balustrades. After exploring the wonders of the temple grounds, you venture to Surakarta, the cultural sister of Yogyakarta, to tour the stunning collection of classical artwork on display in the 18th-century Mangkunegaraan Palace.

Mount Bromo – Along the Scenic Rail

In the morning, the sunlight glints off the pristine elegance of the central kraton . Traditional markets open with colorful exotic fruits shining against mounds of rice. Students from around the world linger in the cafes and sip strong black coffee cultivated in the nearby countryside. After breakfast, you have a private transfer to the train station where you board a first class car for the scenic ride east to Surabaya. The relaxing ride travels along the winding railway, highlighting the emerald and jade hues of the rice paddy fields and tropical forest. Hummingbird trees grow beneath the jungle canopy cast by dark red meranti trees.

White petals stand out along the lower leaves, growing from white orchid trees, which can reach a height of nearly 10 feet tall. The glimpse of the Java rainforest calls to you, radiant with verdant leaves and dense trees, and 650 bird species. Your guide meets you at the Surabaya station and leads you the remainder of the way to the village of Ngadisari, which stands on the foothills of Mount Bromo. Fern trees spread across the slopes. The crisp, cool air replaces the tropical moisture of Solo. Rice fields spread across the lowlands, with distinctly segmented borders. Sporadic homes rise out of the tall grass beneath the lingering trees. The herbaceous scent of the landscape blends with the cooler mountain air beneath the active volcanic peak of Mount Bromo.

Kalibaru – The Thrills of the Countryside

In the morning, wrap your hands around a hot mug of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, allowing the richness from the drink and the warmth of the cup to ease you into dawn. Your guide meets you before sunrise, eager to lead you to the top of Mount Bromo before the sun begins to rise. You step onto a four-wheel-drive jeep ready to ascend the steep slopes. In the darkness, the wind carries a sharp bite. In the absence of a nearby city, the stars sweep across the sky, adding another layer of charm to the secluded region.

You reach the top of Mount Penanjakan, the highest viewpoint in the area at an altitude of nearly 9,100 feet above sea level. The sunlight peeks over the distant horizon, spreading layers of color above the rolling ridges. Beneath you swells a sea of mist. Burnt auburn and red melts into a fading yellow until the clear blue sky returns. The mist below the mountaintops dissipates, revealing radiant greenery. The sun continues to rise into the air as you mount a horse to travel along the less than two-mile distance between Mount Penanjakan and Mount Bromo.

The conical volcanic peak grows as you venture closer. The verdant slopes become rugged hills, paved with loose dirt resembling the landscape of the moon. The peak reaches 7,639 feet above sea level. The arid landscape makes the peaks rising out of the sand resemble Egyptian pyramids with steam puffing out of the fumaroles. Riding on horseback makes you feel like an adventurer in search of the next thrill located inside the caldera of Indonesia’s most active volcano.

Ijen – In the Company of Coffee

In the morning, you wake up in the village of Kalibaru, located on a small hill overlooking the rainforest. The refreshing climate and elevated position make the surrounding landscape perfect for growing cloves and coffee. Outside of your accommodation, you find the air hinted with sweet and enticing spice. After breakfast, you venture to a local coffee plantation to learn about the cultivation of one of Java’s most prized exports. Along the road to the plantation, your guide points out rubber trees and livestock, farmers tending to the rice paddies and villagers returning home carrying buckets of fresh water.

Once on the plantation, your guide leads you along the sloped hills to see the actual coffee plants thriving in the cooler tropical temperatures. The beans resemble berries growing beneath the verdant leaves. They look nothing like the grainy bean you expected to find. The aroma is slightly sweet, and the texture of the crop is a bit waxy between your fingers. At the residence, locals wet and peel the berries, taking away the outer skin before placing the red fruits in drying racks.

Only after desiccation do the beans resemble the coffee you know. Your guide explains that they must first roast the beans to help release the natural flavors of the plant, an important step in any coffee production. At the end of the tour, you find the scent of freshly brewed coffee overtaking the herbaceous aroma of the surrounding trees. You take a small sip of the hot coffee searching for the flavors your guide suggested, such as caramel and cinnamon, natural flavors taken from the soil and uniquely enriching each crop.

Lovina – Stunning Mountaintops to Refreshing Coastline

You wake once again before sunrise, setting out on a guided tour from the base camp at Mount Ijen. The crisp, cold air brushes against your cheeks but your excitement overtakes the elements. Your guide leads you along the trail, stopping sporadically to ensure the flashlights are leading you in the right direction. The adventure is thrilling, lit with meandering headlands, flashlights, and the abundance of starlight twinkling in what remains of the night sky. You use a bamboo staff to help with the steeper sections of the hike, reaching the rim of the caldera after two miles. The rugged rocks rise along the slopes if the caldera’s interior. You traverse the path, holding tightly to the handrails.

The night begins to glow with an ethereal electric blue. The radiance actually stems from flames burning at the base of the caldera. The distinctive color shining beneath the night sky is unlike anything you have ever seen before. The sun rises over the crater and offers a stretch of light to the indigo waters of the lake, which reaches a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. You exit the crater and the view changes from the unique blue flames and glowing water to the verdant hillsides leading you down the mountainside. Your private transfer escorts you to the coastline at which you board a ferry for the welcoming and relaxing Balinese shores at Lovina Beach.

Ubud – On the Temple Edge

In the morning, the sunlight glints off the narrow black sand beaches bordering the smooth stretch of verdant trees bordering the coastline. The tranquil ambiance provides a perfect chance to embrace the colorful combination of the land and sea. The water is warm and inviting. The sand is soft and comfortable beneath the tropical sunlight. Your private transfer meets you at the hotel after breakfast, ready to take you on full-day tailored Bali tours through the central mountains and along the volcanic rim of Mount Batur before reaching the cultural center of Ubud. The road up the mountainside contains thrilling hairpin turns offering views to the emerald terraced rice paddies overtaking the lower hills.

Coconut palms soar into the sky providing scattered shade below. On the edges of the nearby slopes of Mount Agung, you reach the largest and holiest of the Hindu temples in Bali, known as Pura Besakih. The temple sits atop the mountainside at 3,280 feet above sea level. The complex contains 23 separate structures erected over six tiers. Stone dvarapala , guards often taking the shape of demons, flank the stairways, which ascend through the split gate to reach the courtyard of the main temple. The central shrine is dedicated to the holy trinity of Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu. Flower offerings provide ample color to the stone figures, along with smooth, dyed cloth wrapped around the holy figures.

Ubud – Around the Soul

Fields of green reach the stunning dense forest on the outskirts of Ubud. Pink and white flowers blossom along the frangipani trees. The scent of freshly brewed coffee emanates from the central cafes, and the natural aroma of coconut drifts down from the palm trees. A vibrant rainbow of colors fills the Ubud Art Market. Paintings of traditional ceremonies and the surrounding landscape stand beside handmade beaded jewelry and hand-carved statues. At the heart of town stands the 19th-century Ubud Royal Palace, a landmark of Ubud that connotes regal charm inside Balinese architecture. The grounds also house the dramatic dance performances for which the city is known.

Water lilies bloom on the pond in front of the rising tiered tower of the Taman Saraswati Temple.  Carvings honor the goddess of wisdom and art. At the edge of town, you find the Monkey Forest, a reserve in which three Hindu temples hide beneath the towering trees. Hundreds of macaque monkeys linger along the footpaths and roost in the branches. The lush walkways open to the stone dragon bridge beneath the sounds of rustling leaves and chattering troops. The forest encompasses 30 acres, in which you discover Pura Beji, a temple decorated with dramatic detailed carvings bursting from the walls.

Ubud – The Journey’s Tail End

In the morning, the citrus aroma of pomelo fills the dining room at breakfast. Glints of light fill the windows of Studio Perak, a silversmith workshop outside the center of town. Master tinkerers teach visitors and locals alike the art of crafting the shimmering metal into beautiful works, from necklaces to bracelets using traditional techniques passed down through the generations. The splendor of the city ranges from majestic jewelry to the captivating countryside. When you are ready, your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby and escorts you to Ngurah Rai International Airport with plenty of time to check-in for your flight home.

Welcome to Yogyakarta!

At Yogyakarta International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your sweet hotel in Central Java's heartland in about 1½ hours.

Start the day's program with a visit to the Sultan's Palace, also known as the Kraton, which is located in the center of the city and was founded in 1755.

Look out for the ornate reception halls as well as the large open-air pendopos (Indonesian pavilions), specifically built so that the Sultan could listen to gamelan (native orchestra) performances. There is also an air-conditioned room containing the desk at which the ninth sultan planned the overthrow of the Dutch. Something particularly curious, or just plain odd, is the painting of the eighth sultan on the day of his circumcision!

The next stop is Tamansari (also known as the Water Castle), situated just 250 meters from the Sultan's Palace. It was built in 1758 by the prince, with the sole purpose of being used as a 'place of pleasure' by the prince and his harem. The prince would sit in his tower, enjoying watching his harem frolic in the water, and send for any one of them whom he fancied at the time, who would enter the prince's quarters, where he would enjoy his princely ways with them.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant before we return you to your resort.

A sunrise excursion to the 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple compound at Borobudur promises to be a tour highlight. It's the biggest Buddhist temple in the world!

A UNESCO site and one of the world's premier Buddhist places of worship, Borobudur's main temple aligns with Buddhist cosmology with its six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. Some 2,600 relief panels and 52 Buddha statues decorate the platforms; another 72 Buddha statues surround the temple's main dome. This massive edifice required more than 75 years to construct, and 60,000 cubic meters of stone.

Abandoned in the early 10th century because of political upheaval, Borobudur lay neglected until its rediscovery by an Englishman in 1814. As we watch in silence as the sun rises over the temples, we contemplate the enterprise and devotion that created this awe-inspiring complex. A light breakfast is then provided at the Plataran Resort.

We continue to the village of Candirejo, where you can learn about local arts and crafts. Following your tour, we'll return to your hotel in Yogyakarta. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Pack your bags and say goodbye to Yogyakarta for a moment. Upon landing at Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali and clearing arrival formalities, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel in Ubud by private air-conditioned vehicle (the drive takes about 1½ hours).

Located in the foothills of Gianyar Regency and surrounded by ravines, dense forests, and picturesque paddy fields, Ubud is one of the most attractive towns in Bali and a must-see for anyone visiting the island.

Since the early 20th century, Ubud has been a muse for European artists, and today, you can delve into the studios and galleries of several influential pioneers. The Balinese painters' studios are equally captivating, showcasing a renaissance in Balinese art by blending traditional approaches with European techniques. The Museum of Modern Balinese Arts is a must-visit today.

Other trip highlights include Batubulan (meaning "stone moon"), Celuk, and Mas, where stone carvings and the intricate details of silverwork and woodcarvings will both surprise and astonish you.

Don't miss the lively Ubud market, a delightful way to spend time amidst batik fabrics, unique trinkets, souvenirs, and the enticing aromas of spices and fruits. Remember, haggling is the name of the game here—those seasoned market vendors can be quite formidable!

Embark on an enriching journey today as you connect with the vibrant Balinese culture, immersing yourself in the daily lives of local families. Capture picturesque moments on your way to Subak Guliang, a charming traditional farming village at the heart of the island.

Venture further to the ancient Hindu Besakih temple, revered as the 'mother temple of Bali,' with a history spanning over 1,000 years. Nestled 1,000 meters high on the volcanic slopes of Mount Agung, Bali's majestic peak, witness pilgrims offering prayers, potentially in multitudes.

Conclude today's journey with a visit to Klungkung Palace, also known as Puri Agung Semarapura. Explore the well-preserved Kertagosa Pavilion, a remarkable showcase of traditional Balinese architecture. This pavilion, once a Hall of Justice, displays artifacts such as the Kamasan Paintings, narrating famous Hindu legends across the ages.

Prepare for an adventurous journey through five distinct and authentic Balinese terrains, where dust and mud become your companions! Embark on a quad bike adventure traversing rice fields, plantations, jungle trails, mud tracks, and two traditional villages in Desa Kerta, Payangan. Our fleet boasts new, top-of-the-line quad bikes with significant engine capacity, 4x4 capability, full automation, and power steering for a seamless off-road experience. The independent rear suspension ensures a smooth ride on varied terrain.

Operating these quad bikes is a breeze, but if you prefer, you can opt to ride as a passenger with a fellow group member or one of our experienced guides. Every tour is accompanied by skilled guides, and to enhance your experience, groups are divided based on driving skill, ensuring that each adventure is tailored to your preferences.

Today you would head to a Beach hotel at the Jimbaran Bay after a lovey and lazy morning in the hotel in Ubud.

Jimbaran Bay in Bali is a beautiful place known for its stunning beaches and seafood restaurants. The beach with its golden sand and calm waters makes it a great spot for swimming and relaxation. Having a seafood dinner with the sound of the waves in the background, or taking an evening stroll along the beach under the moonlight. You would create romantic and memorable moments with your sweetheart here.

Relish a leisurely morning, you will start a two-hour private cruise adventure at the renowned Jimbaran Bay.

Following a safety briefing from your captain, embark on a serene journey along the tranquil waters. Approach the Uluwatu Temple perched high on the cliffs. Participate in a traditional Balinese blessing ceremony with your captain, placing a floating Canang Sari into the ocean.

Enjoy the beauty of the Indian Ocean as the sun sets over Jimbaran Bay. Pause at the peak of the sunset, taking in the color-changing sky and evening light

Sail away from Bali to Nusa Lembongan Island on a catamaran. Aboard the catamaran, complimentary soft drinks and refreshments are served as you travel from mainland Bali to Nusa Lembongan.

Upon arrival at the Waka Beach Club in Lembongan, enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch, which includes salads, steaks, and fresh fish. After lunch, you could join an optional guided tour of this small unspoiled island, home to seaweed farmers.

The catamaran sailing cruise offers an array of water sports activities, including banana boat rides, pool volleyball, snorkeling, and semi-submersible coral viewing. Other water sports options include a parasailing adventure, which would take you high above the water for a bird's-eye view of the island, and scuba diving with the in-house dive team.

And when the day is done, the catamaran sails leisurely back to Benoa Harbor, arriving as the sun sets on another glorious day in Bali.

Free arrangements today to let you fully relax or explore the neighborhood at your own pace. It is the best time to have a spa in your luxury hotel or sit around on the white sand of the beach. Enjoy the last moments in Bali!

Say goodbye to Bali. Your guide will meet you for your airport transfer to catch your flight home.

We hope this delightful Bali & Java Honeymoon makes your romantic memories and your love unforgettable!

The wet season is not as bad as it sounds. It is a daily heavy and short rainfall, some days cloudy but some days beautiful weather.

This is a great blog post, thanks for putting it together!

We are planning to go to Indonesia between 1st and 18th of June, where we want to visit Malang, Yogyakarta, Ubud, Gilli Air and The Komodo Island. This will be a an active holiday, where we will be moving every few days.

Can I ask you what is the best travel route between Malang -> Ubud ->Gilli Air -> Komodo -> Back to Bali Airport?

I have been researching this and all the travel options seem very complicated, especially between the islands.

Any thoughts are welcomed!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Bogdan! So exciting you’re planning to travel Indonesia. In terms of the best route, the one you have set out works very well. From Malang you can decide whether you want to see Mt. Bromo and/or the Ijen Crater and then hop on a train/bus + ferry (or travel with a a private driver ) to get to Bali. From Ubud, you can travel to Amed or Padangbai to boat to Gili Air. The Gili islands, as well as Lombok both offer tours throughout the Komodo Islands, which typically end in Labuan Bajo. From there, you can easily fly back to Bali. Hope that helps!

Not sure what the ‘G’ stands for but this was our very first trip and it was quite the “adventure”! Vera our tour guide was the best and our group was a lot of fun and we all got along just great. Hey if they’re all like that, I would do it again.

Jakarta to Ubud Tour

Jakarta to Ubud

the 2 last days of traveling before Tanah Lot should have been replaced by a faster way as the roads and traffic are very intense and only one day in Ubud is not enough. The hotel in Joshi is great but the food did not meet standards and I got sick. Generaly speaking it was a great experience. Andy was very helpful experienced and took good care of the crew; it was a pleasure.

The itinerary is excellent chosen for getting know the region and people of java and bali in this short period of time. It takes you to the well known tourist places, but also to some awesome unknown places especially in Java. The CEO Hesti is perfect for this tour, always happy and those feelings are carried over to all tour members. She is a local javanese who provides you with further information and helps you with additional personal requests.

Amazing Java Bali Tours : Private & All Inclusive

Everything went very well. Java and Bali are both very beautiful islands and thanks to the very good tour guides who responded to our wishes, we were able to see and experience a lot. The tour itself should perhaps be reconsidered. Getting up at 3 a.m. two days in a row and then having a long day of traveling is a bit much. If feasible, a stopover wouldn't be a bad idea. However, the hotel in Bromo was an imposition for Europeans. There are much better ones nearby. Otherwise we were satisfied with the offer.

aggressive itinerary. Was able to experience all of Java.
The tour was as well organised, and run by a very capable tour leader as one has come to expect from Intrepid.
overall a really cool trip. One thing I'd change is day trains to night trains, because we could've been doing some other stuff during those 2 days of simply sitting on our bums :P

Bali-Java Birding Tour

Papuan Pitta Birding Tours Birdwatching Australia

Bali Java Birding

This tour is a great introduction to birding in Indonesia. Safe, comfortable and reliable, this tour covers the well-known yet from a birding point of view under-explored islands of Bali and adjacent Java. These two areas boast a wide variety of birds, many of which are endemic to small regions.

We’ll take no time escaping the tourists in Bali and explore the rich diversity in habitats that both Bali and adjacent Java have to offer, within a relatively small area. From coastal lagoons, a haven for waterbirds, to savannah-like grasslands with some unique species, to some of the bird-richest rainforests on the planet both tropical in the lowlands as well cool-climate on the slopes of long-extinct volcanoes, covered in temperate rainforests, this tour covers them all.

Bali Java Birdwatching

Most importantly, you will be accompanied by an experienced Australian guide who has birded these Indonesian islands many times as well as worked with local people for years. Accompanied by a local guide and dedicated driver, the team will make sure that the tour runs smoothly and that all you need to worry about is enjoying the birds! As an added bonus, the area is rich in history, culture and spectacular wildlife.

This tour takes us to the coasts of Bali and Java, the interior hill forests of Bali and savannah woodlands, rainforests and extinct volcanoes on Java. We’ll stay at comfortable, quality accommodation with delightful meals to suit all taste-buds. Expect between 200-250 species in 12 days.

A Guide to the Holy Springs of Tirta Empul: Bali’s Sacred Water Temple

One of the busiest water temples in Indonesia, Tirta Empul is a temple considered sacred by Balinese Hindu community. The temple has several holy springs which are said to have been created by The God Indra and believed to be blessed water that could purify those who bathe there.

Tirta Empul is dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu God of water. In the Balinese language, Tirta Empul loosely translated means water gushing from the earth, which for this reason Tirta Empul is regarded as a holy spring. The Tirta Empul Temple includes shrines to Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, as well as one for Indra and Mount Batur. It is considered one of the five most holy temples in all of Bali and is considered one of the holiest water sources in Bali. You can also find other holy water temples in Bali such as Pura Ulun Danu at Lake Beratan, Pura Tirta Tawar at Gianyar, Pura Tirta Harum at Bangli, Pura Tirta Taman Mumbul at Badung, and many more.

bali

Tirta Empul was founded in 926 A.D and is still being actively used to this day. Although it is a sacred place of worship to the locals, tourists from all over the world are welcome to experience the beauty and participate in the purification rituals. In 2017, the former US President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and daughters Malia and Natasha, made Tirta Empul one of their selected sites to visit and experience.

If you’re planning to visit Tirta Empul, here’s what to know more about this sacred temple:

The inside of Tirta Empul

The Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple is located in the village of Manukaya, near the town of Tampaksiring, not far from Ubud, in the Gianyar Regency, the cultural heart of Bali . The temple is situated just below the Presidential Palace of Tampaksiring. Built-in 1957 by Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, the beautifully built palace itself is an important landmark of the island and the country. Together with the Presidential Palace, the Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple provides some of the most fascinating views you will ever see.

As a petirtaan or bathing center, Tirta Empul is quite a large temple complex and it takes at least 30 minutes to an hour to explore the entire site. Just as at other temples and sacred sites around the island, you will need to put on a 'sarong' before entering the premises. The sarongs are available at the temple's entrance and can be rented for a small donation.

As soon as you enter the temple, you will walk through the large stone Balinese gate (locally known as candi bentar) and arrive in the outer courtyard of the temple. This area of the temple is called jaba sisi. At the end of the courtyard is another candi bentar built into the wall that leads to the central courtyard. This gate is guarded by smoothly carved huge statues of two Dwarapala or guardians given a brush of golden colors. At the top of the gate is a carving of Kala which is quite different from other Kala carvings elsewhere since it has fangs that stick upwards and a pair of hands with open arms.

bali

Entering the inner courtyard, you will arrive at the jaba tengah area which is the main area of the temple. The holy springs here bubble up into a large, crystal-clear pool within the temple and gush out through 30 waterspouts into the two sacred purification pools. Local Balinese and Hindu worshippers stand in long lines in the pools waiting to dip their heads under the waterspouts in a purification ritual known as melukat. Bathers start in the pool on the left side standing in the pool to the waist under the first water spout. Once they have cleansed themselves under the first spout they join the next queue. This process is continued until they have cleansed themselves under each waterspout. However, there are two spouts that are meant only for cleansing the dead and are prohibited to be used by the living for the melukat ritual.

Behind the purification, pools are the final section of the Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple, called the jeroan. Mostly overlooked by tourists, the jeroan or inner courtyard is a pleasant place where people come to pray. The front part of the courtyard is dominated by the large water spring that feeds the purification pools. The spring is filled with green algae and small fish swim among the reeds. Behind the springs are large Hindu shrines. This part of the temple is nice to quickly explore. The shrines are brightly decorated, which contrasts with the starched white clothing of the Balinese who come here to pray.

As you exit Tirta Empul you pass through a large pool filled with koi fish. This section of the temple is walled off on all four sides from the rest of the complex, which gives it a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Fat koi swim lazily in the pond waiting for their next meal.

The Legend of Creation

Based on a manuscript called Usana Bali, the creation of Tirta Empul involves the myth of an epic battle between a powerful yet wicked king named Mayadenawa and a God, Bhatara Indra. The king did not believe in God, and forbade his subject from worshipping God. He was also dangerous. He possessed a spiritual power but was too drunk with his power and carelessly used it for black magic. Seeing the chaos, a priest named Sang Kulputih prayed to Bhatara Indra to put an end to the evil king.

bali

Later, Bhatara Indra and his warriors came to attack Mayadenawa and dethroned him. Mayadenawa and his troops fled to the north of a village which is now known as ‘Tampak Siring’. At night, when Bhatara Indra’s army were deep asleep, Mayadenawa snuck into their camp and created a beautiful but poisonous spring that the army would drink from upon waking up. When Mayadenawa crept into the camp, he walked on the sides of his feet so as not to leave footprints--this is believed to be the origin of the village’s name, 'Tampak Siring', which translates as 'tilted footprint'.

In the morning, Bhatara Indra awoke to find his men were poisoned to death. It was then, through his power as a God that he pierced the ground with his staff, creating a sacred healing spring of holy water. The water was sprayed onto the dead army and they came back to life. This water source which is believed to have healing properties and a source of life came to be known as Tirta Empul.

bali

Knowing that his plan had failed, Mayadenawa tried to transform himself into all sorts of different beings but to no avail, since Bhatara Indra continued to chase him. When at last he transformed himself into a boulder, Indra shot an arrow through it, and eventually killed the evil king. The blood of Mayadenawa that gushed from the boulder is believed to have formed the Petanu River, and for over a thousand years, the river was cursed making rice grow rapidly, but having an awful reek of blood. The Balinese Hindu people commemorate the death of Mayadenawa every 210 days in the Balinese traditional calendar as the day when Virtue triumphs over Evil in the ritual and ceremony called Galungan.

How To Get There

Tirta Empul temple is located roughly 14 km northeast of Ubud. If you stay around Ubud town center, you will need approximately a 30 minutes ride. But if you plan to go to Tirta Empul directly once you arrive at Ngurah Rai Airport, it will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Here are several options for you to get you there:

1.  Rent a Scooter

Driving a scooter would be the most affordable and easiest option to get to Tirta Empul Temple. You can easily rent a scooter anywhere in Bali because there are many scooter rental services you can find around the island.

One scooter costs around 50K - 70K rupiahs a day, you will also get a helmet and make sure to wear it because it’s mandatory in Indonesia. Make sure to bring a map or have a stable internet for your online maps to get there.

2.  Rent a Car

Renting a car is also a great option if you travel with a larger group or with your family. Just like renting scooters, car rental services are also accessible everywhere in Bali. You can also find car rentals in online services.

There are two options available :

A self-driving car , the cost starts from 215K to 5 million rupiahs depending on which car you want to use.

Car with driver , the cost starts from 550K to 2 million rupiahs depending on which car you want to use.

3.  Join a tour

Joining a tour would be the least challenging way to get to Tirta Empul. It’s the ideal option, if you are not comfortable riding a scooter or renting a car. There are plenty of tour operations in the town center and you can book a tour to Tirta Empul. The cost varies depending on each operation and their options.

A very unique yet incredible experience that you could ever have, visiting Tirta Empul definitely should be in your bucket list. After visiting the temple, there are more interesting sights and activities in Ubud that you can enjoy and put on your bucket list. See you in Bali !
