Phu Quoc Island (pronounced “Phú Quốc ” or [fǔ wək]) lies in the south-west of Vietnam, close to Cambodia’s coastline. It is the biggest island in Vietnam to-date, with a total of 574 square kilometers and a permanent population of approximately 103.000 residents. Once a simple native fishing village, since the 18th century, Phu Quoc had started changing when Western geopolitics began their impact.

During the Vietnam war (1953 - 1975), the island housed Phu Quoc prison - the largest prisoner’s camp of South Vietnam, detaining thousands of prisoners of war. The prison remains until today, where you can have a visit and learn more about Vietnam’s wartime history. After years under protectorate from the French, Chinese, South Vietnam and Cambodia, during the 1970s - early 1980s, Phu Quoc Island was officially recognized as an integral part of Vietnam’s territory.

However, even if you are a budget traveler, Phu Quoc can still be a great option. Despite its higher price than most in Vietnam, Phu Quoc still represents great value for travelers. Hotels and resorts from different budget ranges here are much cheaper than what you would actually pay back home. Furthermore, plenty of hostels and budget accommodation are available, even in popular resort areas such as Long Beach.

How to get to Phu Quoc island

The most effective and quickest way to travel to Phu Quoc is to fly. From inland Vietnam to Phu Quoc Island, there are several airlines (including budget ones) operate flights every day with affordable prices and varied schedules. One tip is to book ahead of time with budget airlines. This might actually be a better option than to travel with far less comfortable and more time-consuming methods of transportation.

From Hanoi or Danang, you can fly directly to Phu Quoc Airport. This takes roughly 1.5-2 hours and costs around 65 US$ for a one-way course. Budget airlines like Vietjet, Jetstar, or Bamboo Airways all fly this route. If you’re opting for a higher quality option, Vietnam Airlines is your number one choice.

The flight from Ho Chi Minh city to Phu Quoc is essentially the same. You can fly directly with Jetstar or Vietjet for around 25 US$, although this price doesn’t include checked baggage. Obviously, the sooner you book your flight, the better chance of getting a bargaining price you will have.

Other forms of transportation

Alternatively, you can travel to Phu Quoc by taking an 8-hour bus ride to Ha Tien and a 1.5-hour fast ferry from this province. However, unless you want to explore other areas on your journey from Ho Chi Minh city, plus having a good body condition to travel for such a long time, it is not recommendable to go by bus and ferry to Phu Quoc. If you book well in advance, it is more convenient and economical to fly.

If you’re staying in the Mekong Delta regions, you can fly directly from Can Tho to Phu Quoc as well. One trip takes you around 1 hour and 120US$. Although if you’re planning on a budget trip and feeling adventurous, traveling from Can Tho via bus and ferry is the way-to-go.

From Thailand, you can opt for a direct flight from Bangkok to Phu Quoc in under 2 hours, with prices starting from 120US$. Furthermore, although Phu Quoc is located incredibly close to Cambodia, there is neither direct flights nor ferry to the island! Instead, you have to travel to Vietnam with whichever transportation you prefer, and then journey to Phu Quoc from wherever you are, following the instructions above.

Visa information

Citizens from many countries can enter Vietnam without applying for a visa beforehand and can stay up to 15-30 days depending on their passports. We have good news for you! Phu Quoc, in fact, has more relaxed visa rules than Vietnam. You might be able to stay up to 30 days in Phu Quoc without a visa! Visa exemptions are subject to change, so it’s better to check the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for updated information.

Weather in Phu Quoc remains warm throughout the year, however, there are two main seasons in Phu Quoc - wet season and dry season.

Dry season lasts from November until May. This is the nicest time to visit Phu Quoc Island and enjoy sunny beaches all day. April and May tend to be the hottest months and sometimes temperatures can even go up to 40°C (104°F). Therefore, if you want to venture on Phu Quoc Island during the dry season, but avoid the hottest weather, the best time to travel is from November until March. Do note that this is also the peak season and many tourists will overcrowd the island. If you want to avoid the crowd and don’t mind a little bit of heat, traveling in April might be your best option.

How long should you stay

Being a beach break destination, there are not so many attractions to visit in Phu Quoc Island. In fact, you can easily tick off all tourist destinations in a day or two. However, when it comes to less adventure and more relaxation, it’s tricky to tell exactly how long you should stay here!

If you’re short on time and budget, you should still spend at least 2-3 days in Phu Quoc if you truly want to enjoy everything on the island. A one-day trip to the Southern part and another short trip to the North is enough to get the whole island covered.

Take a day tour covering the major attractions, go for a snorkeling cruise amongst the rich marine life and catch fresh fish, visit the local night market and taste exotic food, or simply just lie down and laze around Long Beach all day.

How to travel around Phu Quoc island

Unfortunately, public transportation in Phu Quoc is practically nonexistent. Most locals travel around by either cars or motorbikes.

The best way to get around the island is to rent a bicycle or motorbike. Do note that even though the island is small, the distance between each destination is relatively far. This plus the intense heat during dry season might not be pleasant to travel by bicycle. On the other hand, if you’re choosing motorbike as your main transportation, be well aware to carry your motorbike license with you. If not, your travel insurance is unlikely to cover for you once you get into an accident.

Half-day and Full-day Phu Quoc Private Car Charter

If you’re up for a bit of leg work, you can take a walk around the main popular town of Duong Dong. From the night market to the Dinh Cau sea temple is easily within walking distance. You can also take a stroll along the Long Beach, soak in the tropical atmosphere and take a seat in a nice bar or restaurant.

On the other hand, if you want to go further and discover more attractions, then a taxi is your best choice. Taxi prices in Phu Quoc are relatively more expensive than in other parts of Vietnam, but still cheaper in comparison to other Western countries. There is a taxi booking app designed for the island, called PQRide. Additionally, Mai Linh is also a reliable taxi operator.

If you’re a solo traveller who is on a budget, with a slightly adventurous mind, opt for motorcycle taxis. You just need to hop on the back and your motorbike driver will take you to your desired destination. It’s much cheaper than a regular taxi, only around 1-3 US$ depending on the distance. However, it is potentially not as safe and comfortable, so do travel at your own risk.

We have run into a problem at airport my passport was only valid for 3 months and they didn’t let us travel as our plans. Luckily we got a new passport and flights in 24 hours. South Vietnam And Cambodia Discover 12 Days

Tour Radar has so many tours on its website it took a long time to decide which to book. Eventually we chose the Bravo Indochina 12 day tour of South Vietnam and Cambodia. However, this tour only included two nights at Siem Reap, covering the small circuit and a cruise on Tonle Sap, so we asked if we could extend by two days. This was no problem for them, and at a small extra cost they added another full day touring the big circuit. Whilst the tour was ostensibly a group tour, it ended up being a private tour at the same cost. This was seamless, with excellent and friendly tour guides at each location. Every day was something new, with unexpected experiences, like a ride on a bamboo train at Battambang, a crawl through the Cu Chi tunnels,watching thousands of bats stream out of a cave at sunset, or a visit to a slik island on the Mekong to learn how silk is extracted and then woven. Temples were also amazing, especially that at Cao Dai, not to mention the Angkor extravaganza. And then there was the dark side - visits to the Killing Cave and the War Remnants Museum, reminding you that this wasn't always a peaceful part of the world like it is now. 14 days on the go, and worth every minute. Overall a great experince, and highly recommended.

The rainy season lasts from April to the end of October. Most precipitation falls in the months of July, August and September.

Day 1: Explore the island’s best beaches

Go swimming at picturesque Sao Beach

For quality beach time away from the crowds, head south to Sao Beach (Bãi Tắm Sao) near An Thoi Town, about 25km from Phu Quoc's centre. Stretching over 7 km of white-sand and palm-lined shore, Sao Beach is truly a highlight. Entrance and parking are free. The natural shade provided from the trees and entrances created by locals give access to the surrounding pristine forests for some trekking. Visitors often spend the whole day here − swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, kite surfing, and fishing.

Enjoy the freshest catch of the day at Rach Vem fishing village

Another awesome spot is ‘starfish beach’ in Rach Vem fishing village, about 20km north of Duong Dong town. Photographers love this destination, with its calm, crystal-clear waters, floating wooden bridges, stilt raft houses over the sea, and countless red starfish (which visitors are advised not to touch or disturb). As it’s also surrounded by forest, this is a truly scenic, peaceful spot for visitors to relax. By now, you would’ve worked up an appetite. Take your pick from the plentiful seafood caught by the fishermen, which will be cooked on the spot for you to enjoy while gazing at the beautiful blue views.

Relish the sublime beauty of Vietnam’s southernmost islands

The best way to explore the picture-perfect smaller islands in the south is on an island-hopping tour. Your boat will take you to heavenly Mong Tay Island, where you can laze on large swaths of soft sand or relax on a lounger under one of the many shady palm trees. Snorkel or dive at Gam Ghi Island, which boasts one of the best coral reefs in Vietnam. Look out for sea creatures such as barracudas and giant pufferfish. You can snorkel some more at May Rut island, and try your hand at fishing at Thom Island. To keep your appetite satisfied, your guides will whip up a generous lunch for you to enjoy on-board. In the evening, once your tour is finished, sit back and enjoy a refreshing beverage at dusk at one of the island’s popular beach bars, such as Sunset Sanato, Ocsen, or Sunset Beach.

Day 2: Enjoy the island’s one-of-a-kind activities

Discover the secrets behind the island's famous specialties – pepper and fish sauce.

For over 200 years, Phu Quoc islanders have produced delicious fish sauce. Today, the island is the country’s leading producer of this sauce – a mainstay in Vietnamese cooking. For a fascinating excursion, visit one of the ‘barrel houses’ to see how the sauce is made according to a time-honoured tradition involving anchovies, salt and giant wooden barrels. On your way out, pick up some bottles of the sauce as souvenirs for people back home. Another pantry item the island is known for is its particularly pungent and spicy pepper. Tour one of the plantations to learn how over 1,000 tons of pepper are produced here annually. 

Go diving and snorkeling

Owing to the island’s clear water, diving and snorkeling are among the most popular things to do on Phu Quoc. There are several options for diving, for both beginners and experienced divers alike.

Be awed by the views from the cable car to Hon Thom Island 

Phu Quoc boasts a Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop three-rope cable car, which is nearly 8km long. The cable car linking An Thoi Town and Hon Thom Island has got to be seen – and experienced − to be believed. Soar high above the sea and enjoy 360-degree views of the An Thoi Archipelago, jungle-covered mountains, stunning coral reefs, colourful fishing boats and beautiful sandy bays.

Immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of Phu Quoc’s Night Market

On Bach Dang Street, in the heart of Duong Dong Town, you’ll find the Phu Quoc Night Market. During the evening the street is strictly for pedestrians only to browse the 50-plus stalls selling different products, such as accessories and souvenirs, or serving up fresh seafood and other local delicacies. If street food is your thing, you definitely wouldn’t want to miss this market. Afterwards, stroll along the promenade to see the tour boats and locals out enjoying the fresh evening air. 

Day 3: Enjoy all-in-one tourism destinations at leading theme parks 

At 55 hectares in size, VinWonders Phu Quoc − a theme park located in the Vinpearl Phu Quoc complex – is one of the largest theme parks in Asia. It has over 100 games and shows, so you’d need more than a few days to see them all. If you’re short on time, prioritize visiting the park’s Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc. The animals in this world-class conservation park are free-roaming, offering a unique safari experience in the heart of Southeast Asia. Have fun seeing which of  over 3000 animals and 150 species  you can spot, including lions, tigers, zebras, rhino and giraffe.

If you can’t get enough of the water, you might want to visit the ‘aquatopia’ that is located in Sun World Phu Quoc. In addition to the theme park’s seaside restaurants and activities, such as kayaking, scuba diving and jet-skiing, there’s a water park with a host of fun slides guaranteed to keep kids happy all day. The complex is based in Hon Thom’s nature park, so there’s stunning fresh air and island scenery all around.

For almost of our tours, once tour is confirmed and fully paid but for one reason they cancel the tour, the following charges will apply in the event of cancellation prior to tour commencement:

• More than 30 days before arrival: No charge
• 15-30 days before arrival: 10% of total tour price.
• 7-15 days before arrival: 50% of total tour price.
• 4-7 days before arrival: 75% of total tour price.
• Within 3 days before arrival: 100% tour price.
• There will be no refund given for any unused or missed ground arrangements, sightseeing, meals or hotel accommodations.
• For no show cases, there will be no refund.
• All cancellations must be in person or in writing and received by us.

In case of an unexpected situation/ bad weather causes an effect on your trip after commencement, we serve the right to change the itinerary of your booked tour for the safety of all clients in the group. If there are more than one solution, we will ask for your permission and agreement to do the next step. In such kind of cancellation, the refund of any payment on the un-used portion of transportation service, hotel service, car rental or tours will be given.

• From 4 to 8 years old: 50% of adult’s fare.
• From 9 to 11 years old: 75% of adult’s fare.
• Students with ID student card: 95% of adult’s fare.
• Over 11 years old: 100% of adult’s fare.

Itineraries

Pickup at hotel and start the tour (pickup time from 11.30 - 12.30 subject to guest's location, surcharge for far pickup). - Visit Pearl Farm of the island, introduction of oysters harvest – pearls process and fine jewelry designing. - Stop at Sao Beach – wellknown for its white sand and the turquoise sea water. Leisure time to explore, unwind, swimming and enjoy lunch at local restaurant. - 14.30 : Transfer to harbor and board our boat for snorkeling - relaxing or sun bathing - 17.30: enjoy the spectacular sunset view and the best time to enjoy fishing when fishes come to surface. - After the sun has disappeared, we have another opportunity to experience night squid fishing. - 18.30 it is dinner time: our crew has prepare a delicious local fishermen meal (squid porridge). Enjoy dinner on board together before heading back to the pier. Get on the vehicle and drive to the hotel. 21:00 Drop off your hotel.

My wife and I loved our snorkelling trip. We visited two islands, the first of which 'Finger nail island' was not great as there was some litter in the sea. 'Turtle island' was much nicer although I'm not sure turtles have ever been there. The trip on the boat was very good and the boat is great for relaxing. Lunch on board was nice.

We enjoyed a day in the south starting from the busy harbor. The whole trip was very nice, the diving equipment was in very good condition and the diving group was very small. The view was unfortunately not optimal. All in all, it was very well organized, there was a large board on the dive boat and the prices are fair. We would love to go diving with you again.
