Best 360 camera: our top picks

Best overall, best budget, best for stills, best for beginners, best gopro for 360, best for sensor size, best single-lens, 8k alternative, how we test cameras.

With the best 360 cameras, you can capture images and videos that are quite unlike anything else. You can capture video which can be explored edited down to "flat" 2D or explored in full by dragging on a screen or deep-diving using AR glasses. Understanding it fully can be a little technical, but you probably won't need to – the best cameras have apps which help you side-step this.

Top Picks 1. Best overall 2. Best budget 3. Best for stills 4. Best for beginners 5. Best 360 GoPro 6. Best for sensor size 7. Best single lens 360 8. 8K alternative How we test cameras FAQs

The files created by 360-degree cameras record the whole scene, so it's the camera's job to see everything and, ideally, ignore you and any device you use to hold the camera – this is why selfie sticks are common.

It is also why the positioning of the lenses opposite each other matters in the design, and the camera software's ability to both stitch the image from the two together and, ideally, to compensate for the camera's movement – stabilization, just like other action cameras. This is less relevant in stills, of course!

Atop that there are a lot of cool effects you can apply by changing the framing; zooming in and out beyond common sense to create 'tiny planets' and the like. This is where a good ecosystem – and good apps with AI subject tracking – put some cameras ahead of others. Plugins for leading editing programs can do this too, or separate apps. Ultimately you have tremendous versatility with a 360-degree camera; it almost doesn't matter where you point it.

If you're feeling lost, don't worry – jump to our section on how 360 imaging works , where we've given you the information you need to get your head around the basics, but thankfully several of the cameras have helped out here a lot too, as you'll see. The cost of entry is a lot less than you might expect, too. And on that note, let's dive in and count off the best 360 cameras you can buy right now.

Insta360 X4

1. Insta360 X4

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

✅ You want sharp 360 video: The 8K makes for much more flexibility than most other ✅ You want a great all-rounder:  The camera is powerful enough to turn itself to nearly any task, including one-camera action camera modes.

❌ You are on a tight budget: There are cheaper options (including the previous generation X3) which still provide a lot of quality. ❌ You want top-notch low-light: With 1/2-inch sensors the HDR is good, but low-light performance is only so-so.

When I tried this camera, I knew immediately it would find itself at the top of this buyer's guide. It's a great choice for people like me (owners of the X3 looking for more resolution and processor power) and an equally sensible choice for anyone getting into 360-degree photography for the first time, whether their goals are serious content creation or fun.

A couple of things set the camera apart. A big one is the Insta360 software, which is comfortably ahead of the offerings from others at the moment. As well as an excellent phone app (iOS/ Android ), there is an Insta360 Studio for Mac/PC and plugins for Premiere and Final Cut Pro so creating content can happen almost immediately for social, or in careful detail later. The AI subject tracking is excellent too, saving hours in manual keyframing compared to GoPro 's offering.

That, though, is available with the X3 too. The headline feature here is the 8K resolution, and the processing power which delivers it. The boost makes for significantly better quality, especially when zooming into video in the edit. It also provides a lot of other upgraded resolutions, like single action camera mode at the crucial 4K60fps threshold, as well as features like bullet time now at 5.7k/120fps.

Other refinements exist too, like the removable lens covers which make the device extra rugged and the ability to connect microphones. All seem to result from a company listening to its customers and making improvements over generations. Whenever improvements suit the users like that things are good (and a word to the wise – this camera's 5-star review was earned in 2024, not 2020).

Kandao Qoocam 3

2. Kandao QooCam 3

✅ You want to try 360-degree photography: With a low cost of entry the QooCam is a great way to experience 360-degree video. ✅ You want decent low-light performance:  The wide aperture sensors don't do a bad job at all.

❌ You want to transfer beyond your phone: No Mac/PC apps were on offer when I tested it. ❌ You want a long battery life: I found the battery didn't manage half an hour.

I'm still working on our full review, but this simplistic-looking 360-degree camera is very appealing because of it's price. The dual 1/1.55-inch sensors and ƒ/1.6 apertures collects a good amount of light and not only captures good-looking 5.7K video but up to 62-megapixel stills, putting it close to the Insta360 X3 or the GoPro Max it seems to draw some appearance cues from.

It looks and feels good, and can be held on a selfie stick for vlogging or capturing immersive panoramas. Hardware quality extends inside too – I have found no issues like early overheating, though admittedly the battery life is surprisingly short, at about 30 minutes.

Compared to the leading brands, though we've not had time to be sure whether Kandao 's new software suite quite matches up to the others. There certainly isn't the same level of support – no Mac/PC app – but the phone app connects to the device and allows transfer to social in a way which means you can have fun experiencing 360-degree.

Kandao is clearly on a good trajectory, and it also owns a good chunk of the 360-degree conference room camera market too, so it should not be discounted. Pricing, though, is where this camera really shines. An interesting note for the future is that at CES 2024 Kandao showed the QooCam 3 Ultra , an 8K camera with a similar looking but bigger housing. This suggests a decent level of confidence in the series.

Ricoh Theta X 360 cameras with a blurred background with red flowers

3. Ricoh Theta X

✅ You want to shoot for virtual tours: The auto HDR and built-in GPS features are ideal for this ✅ You want good low-light performance:  Again by automating the shooting of HDR images, good resolution is achieved in low light

❌ You want to shoot action: Frankly the insta360 X4 is better and cheaper. ❌ You're looking to keep costs down: The price is definitely high looking at the spec sheet alone.

I've got to be clear straight away – this is very much a niche choice, but 360-degree photography serves niches, and virtual tours is an important one.

Whether the Ricoh Theta X is going to appeal to you will depend on what kind of content creator you are. If you're looking at this 360° camera as an alternative to an action camera like the Insta360 X series, then bear in mind that its image stabilization just isn’t as good. Vloggers should also look at the Theta X with suspicion purely because you can’t use an external microphone with it.

So who is the Theta X actually for? It's for people who need to shoot a virtual tours fast. It can be placed on a monopod with tripod feet in its automated HDR mode and capture a 62 megapixel image which can be placed into a tool like Matterport to create a virtual tour – handy for realtors.

This is a feature that put it along way ahead of the competition when it launched, but to be fair its pricing and limited powers in the broader feature scope do put it at a bit of a disadvantage; for many virtual tours it is possible to use the technically slightly higher resolution images from an Insta360 X3 or X4.

When combined with its excellent coloring and low-light abilities, though, the Theta X’s abilities do look good even in average looking appartments. Its lack of RAW capture slightly undermines that option for some, but the realtor on the go may feel this is a wise choice.

Insta360 X3 360 camera on a stick in front of some trees

4. Insta360 X3

✅ You want a good all-rounder: The Insta360 X3 still has great software and good features despite a few extra months! ✅ You want to save a bit of cash:  This might not be the cheapest option here, but it's great value because of the apps and quality.

❌ You want the latest and greatest: The newer X4 has 8K resolution and an improved battery. ❌ You want the most rugged option: If you need lens guards for the X3, they need to be stuck on.

The Insta360 X3 was the ultimate immersive and versatile video camera until the X4 came out, trumping the X3's 5.7K capture with 8K. Nevertheless the camera still captures everything around you, enabling you to create 3D VR content easily or use its software-based reframing tools to edit your scenes as regular ‘flat’ video, where you can track subjects, create panning shots, and basically point the camera where you like AFTER you’ve shot your video, albeit at slightly lower resolution.

For most quick action shots, and things you throw onto social, you will likely find the extra resolution isn't essential, while the lower price of this now older model is appealing – and it's still newer and more powerful than the GoPro Max!

The Insta360 X3 itself was an evolution of the concept (yep, it was called the X2) rather than a giant leap forward, so it already has some improvements that makes it user friendly. It can be held in one hand, though I usually prefer to user it on a selfie stick – which becomes an 'invisible selfie stick'. thanks to the device. All the key features are available via the touchscreen, and the device is waterproof for a few meters even without a housing.

At the moment, Insta360 seems to be leading the game, and that is evidenced by their software – just about the best, friendliest, and most exciting on the market, and the software tools on phone, Mac & PC (as well as plugins for the likes of FCPX and Premier Pro) have come a long way.

I tried the X3 on a real vacation successfully, and another benefit of this camera's dominance is the range of accessories, including dive cases and more.

Best 360 camera: GoPro Max

5. GoPro Max

✅ You love the GoPro ecosystem: The Insta360 X3 still has great software and good features despite a few extra months!

❌ You want the latest and greatest: GoPro are way behind now — and there are rumors of a new model. ❌ You want the best resolution: The Insta360 X3 comfortably surpassed this; now the X4 has 8K.

There's no denying that my colleague who reviewed the this 360-degree action camera was impressed – rightly given the fact it harks from 2019 and remains an impressive piece of hardware. The image and video quality of the GoPro Max are good enough to make this list, and in some aspects can compete with the Insta360 X3 even now, though that device (let alone the X4) are definitely more advanced in many respects.

GoPro fans, however, can still enjoy the swathe of intuitive features that mean pretty much anyone can gets loads out of it, even if they have little interest in 360-degree imaging. GoPro have also gone to a good deal of effort to create an editing app to allow easy "Shoot first, frame later" editing, but it relys on keyframing rather than automated subject tracking.

The Max does boast an excellent six-mic setup, making it a highly credible vlogging camera, and the 1600mAh battery means you'll have enough charge for a day's shooting.

On the other hand, it's a fairly pricey option and lacks a dedicated 4K video capture that you'll find on some rivals like those from Insta360. If you like the GoPro 'feel' then while I'd still urge you to try Insta360 Studio before you make your mind up, you'll certainly find the polish you like here.

Our advice, though, for devoted GoPro fans unable to convert to the clearly better alternatives on this list is to wait a little longer – there have been rumors of a Max 2.

Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 Edition 360 camera on a dark background

6. Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 Edition

✅ You want good low-light: The large image sensors offer impressive low-light abilities even now ✅ You love Leica:  The co-engineering with Leica on the lenses seems to pay off!

❌ You want to keep the cost down: Expect to pay more then even the higher-res X4 ❌ You want good battery life: The battery block of the system is only 1350mAh

The Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 edition is aimed at the serious filmmaker who is after the best image quality and low-light performance. It might be twice the price of the regular Insta360 One X2 but we think considering how much better it is in terms of low-light performance, dynamic range, and clarity it's definitely worth it.

As we noted in our hands-on review, It feels very well made, uses a 6-gyro FlowState stabilization for super-smooth video, and has a touchscreen which is great for previewing footage but not so easy to use if you have big hands. It's considerably cheaper than the Ricoh Theta Z1 and offers a big step-up in quality so perfect for those needing really professional-looking content.

When I got to grips with it myself, what I noticed was that it still feels like a consumer product, but there is something magical about the size of the image sensors. Having more recently reviewed the X4, I do realise that this camera is now in a very small niche; you need to want less noise in lower light or the X4 will seem a more obvious choice.

To be honest I also found the 1-inch display a little compact compared with newer devices like the X3 and X4.

Trisio Lite2 360 camera on a wooden surface

7. Trisio Lite2

✅ You want to shoot stills: This is all about shooting detailed images, perhaps for virtual tours ✅ You need to avoid stitching marks:  By rotating the camera, there aren't two images to stitch

❌ You want video: The technology prevents it ❌ You want to shoot fast: You need to wait while the motor turns the camera

Designed for businesses that have a need to produce a lot of static virtual tours, the Trisio Lite2 is a very simple device that’s incredibly easy to use. Its 360º photos are excellent and easily good enough for use on virtual tours and for showing off event spaces and hotel rooms online.

The 8K boast is less impressive than its ability with HDR, which helps create vibrant and dynamic spherical images that excel in high contrast environments, but also in low light.

It’s no 360º action camera, with VR-style video off the table. Patience is required, too, since it takes the Trisio Lite2 30 seconds just to light-meter and take a single 360º photo. However, used slowly and carefully the Trisio Lite2 is one of the most limited, and yet the most capable, 360º cameras around that does one thing very well indeed.

Kandao QooCam 8K 360 camera on a white walled room

8. Kandao QooCam 8K 360

✅ You want resolution: 8K is still rare, so this is an opportunity for sharpness.

❌ You want to capture audio: The built-in fan can be an issue. ❌ Battery life is important to you: Frankly, it's not great.

The QooCam 8K is one of the best 360 cameras right now for image quality. A massive (by 360 standards) 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor, 10-bit color, and, of course, that 8K resolution makes sure of that. Photos have plenty of colors and contrast – it was like nothing we’ve seen before from a camera like this when the camera was launched.

The ability to spit out a great-looking photo from a 360º video is welcome, while the detail, sharpness, and smoothness of video – whether in 360º or cut down to widescreen – itself makes the QooCam 8K a giant leap forward for creative filmmakers. We did list some negative points in our review, most notably that it does have an audible fan, however, the battery life isn't great and it's not waterproof without a housing. It was also pretty expensive, and we'd suggest that this probably isn't the right device to buy if you can wait until the QooCam 3 Ultra (see QooCam 3) starts shipping.

How we test 360-degree cameras

We test cameras both in real-world shooting scenarios and in carefully controlled lab conditions. Our lab tests measure resolution, dynamic range, and signal-to-noise ratio.

Resolution is measured using ISO resolution charts and quoted in line widths/picture height, which is independent of sensor size. Dynamic range is measured using DxO Analyzer test equipment and the results are expressed as EV values. DxO Analyzer is also used for noise analysis across the camera's ISO range, with results quoted as a signal-to-noise ratio. We typically choose three competing cameras to offer a performance comparison and some context.

More importantly, we get out there in the world and shoot some 360-degree video. This gives us the opportunity to experience the stitching – do the lenses line up and create a spherical view, or are there lens problems? Is it easy to manipulate the preview?

It is also the only way to experience a type of cameras which depend, as 360-degree photography does, so heavily on software to offer the best feature set. Effects which might seem a novelty can actually be the basis of great social video (not to mention the beginning of a whole world of goggles-friendly AR content.

We also test significant accessories – for example 360-degree cameras require special cases for underwater photography, so we did a full real-world review on the Insta360 X3 Insvisible Dive Case .

How 360 imaging works

When visualizing how 360-degree images are captured, imagine someone photographing a sphere from the inside, making sure they get every contour of its inner surface. That’s essentially what 360-degree cameras do – place you in the centre of a sphere, and use extremely wide-angle lenses to capture everything around that point.

The sensors are ordinary ‘flat’ types, but the key is in the lenses, which are extreme fisheyes capable of capturing a 180-degree view, placed back to back. This captures two hemispherical images, which are then merged to produce the final 360-degree image. A viewer can then explore this image with a mouse, touchpad, touchscreen, or VR headset , depending on how they’re viewing the image.

Taking 360-degree videos is, naturally, more complex than stills, as the action all around the viewer will continue even if they’re not looking at the portion of the image where it’s happening. As streaming platforms get more sophisticated, live 360-degree broadcasts are also becoming more common, which is an unparalleled way to immerse yourself in an unfolding event (short of, y’know, actually being there).

Editing 360-degree imagery can be a daunting task, though it is possible to divide them up into smaller ‘windows’ to handle individually, giving yourself a bit more control. In stills, you can crop out one of these windows entirely and export it as a ‘flat’ image. In the video, this flexibility allows you to essentially simulate camera movements like tracking, panning, and zooming, even though your shot was captured from a fixed position. Handy!

There is one thing to be aware of when dealing with 360-degree imagery, which specifically is resolution. As the surface area of a 360 image is much larger than a conventional one, 12MP on a 360-degree camera means something pretty different than 12MP does on a DSLR, and you can’t crop in as close expecting the same level of detail.

With an increasing number of 360 degree cameras entering the market, it can be a challenge to decide which one is best for you. Most adopt the simple idea of combining two ultra wide-angle lenses back-to-back. The captured footage is then digitally combined into a fully spherical video or, more usefully, into a standard two-dimensional video weaved together from frames that you've chosen after the fact.

The best 360 cameras include features like automatic stitching (which saves you the hassle of manually aligning multiple captures), image stabilization, live-streaming and resolution, which in some cases goes up to 8K . It's also worth looking at cropping functionality, which allows you to extract a standard ‘flat’ video from the 360 degree footage you’ve captured. This means you can shoot everything that’s going on and select your area of focus when you're back home

With many features that go beyond simple 360 degree coverage, it's no wonder comparing like-for-like isn't the easiest. We've curated a list of all the best options, along with reasons to buy and not buy each one. Some are the latest and greatest models, while others are a little older but priced very competitively. And don’t forget that we always display the latest and best deals, too.

1. Insta360 X3

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

✅ You want a big screen: With a 2.29-inch touchscreen you'll be able to interact with menus and footage easily. ✅ You need high dynamic range: Active HDR mode works its magic at ensuring that all the necessary detail is retained in the highlights and shadows.

❌ You want natural footage: A times, the camera over processes footage and results in an overly synthetic look. ❌  You need ultra-sharpness: 4K videos do appear a little soft which means a lack of overall clarity.

An upgrade to our previous favorite, the Insta360 X3 takes everything great about its predecessor and amps it up a notch. Pocket-friendly yet powerful, it beats the GoPro Max for single-lens 4K clarity, and excels when it comes to shooting 5.7K 360-degree footage. While some processing elements can appear more synthetic than a GoPro, we found its Active HDR mode was brilliant at retaining detail in highlights. The continued effectiveness of FlowState image stabilization also impressed in testing.

We felt its significantly larger 2.29-inch touchscreen made the Insta360 X3 a much easier camera to use handheld, even if there remain a few software quirks to be ironed out. Once you’re familiar with the interface, though, it’s largely a breeze. Insta360’s editing workflow also proved seamless in testing, with diverse and intuitive tools complementing the experience. Our review time revealed the claimed 81-minute battery life to be realistic, too. Add in 10m water resistance – twice that of the GoPro Max – and the Insta360 wins out as the most versatile 360 camera you can buy right now.

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

2. GoPro Max

✅ You want video reframing: Editing and reframing tools in the GoPro smartphone app makes it possible to crop footage after shooting. ✅ You need image stabilization: Fast moving action can be stabilized with great in-camera technology.

❌ You are shooting in low-light: The sensor size and technology results in a disappointing level of noise in the shadows. ❌  You need shooting mode variety: The lack of shooting modes is a real limitation that restricts the type of footage that can be captured.

If you're looking to shoot immersive videos of sporting escapades or outdoor adventures, then the GoPro Max is a good alternative to the Insta360 One X2 close. It's waterproof down to five meters without needing a case, and the editing workflow is slick and simple. If you want to turn your 360-degree video into a traditional 2D film – which is one of the main benefits of 360 cams – the app's OverCapture software lets you do this easily, as long as your happy with the final footage being in Full HD.

The Max also amps up many of the features seen on the GoPro's Hero action cams, including superior HyperSmooth stabilization and 360-degree TimeWarp sequences. The slightly sub-par 2D video footage (which is the result of it being converted from a fish-eye images) means the Max falls short of being the ultimate GoPro for both 360 and standard footage. But it's a fantastic option for anyone who wants to shoot action sequences in every direction without the hassle of deciding where to point their action camera, then edit it together quickly later.

The best 360 degree camera for 8k

Kandao QooCam 8K

3. Kandao QooCam 8K

✅ You need high resolution: 8K capabilities allow for maximum flexibility when cropping shots. ✅ You want great slow-mo: Footage can be captured at 120fps using 4K to allow for footage to be slowed down.

❌ You need waterproofing: You'll need to keep this 360 degree camera well away from water. ❌  You want lightweight: At 9.7 oz / 275 g this is far from the lightest option available.

Numbers never tell the whole story, but 8K is a seriously impressive figure in a consumer 360 camera's spec sheet. Qoocam’s 360 heavyweight outguns all of the competition on resolution, with a pair of 20MP CMOS sensors that work together to capture 8K footage at 30fps and 4K video at up to 200fps.

Not only can it create VR-grade video out of the box, but it’s also the first non-pro model from which 360 footage can be cropped down to widescreen format without a big drop in resolution. It packs impressive SuperSteady image stabilization, too, as well as a class-leading 2.4-inch OLED touchscreen for easy control and framing. For both stills and video, dynamic range is excellent, as is color and contrast.

Downsides? There are limited video modes and the partner app is pretty basic, though there’s a handy express mode which downscales footage for mobile editing. There’s also no escaping the relative heft of the Qoocam 8K, or its lack of waterproofing. All the same, provided you can stomach its price tag, its video quality is unrivaled in the 360 market. Once you try 8K, there’s no going back.

Insta360 Evo

4. Insta360 Evo

✅ You want 3D VR footage: Side-by-side cameras capture VR footage that can be viewed with a VR headset. ✅ You need high dynamic range: Low light performance is far from ideal due to the noise levels.

❌ You want elegant design: With average build quality and  larger format this isn't very pocket friendly. ❌  Additional headset required: If you want to view 3D VR footage then you'll also need a VR headset.

It might not have the elegant, pocket-friendly design of Insta360’s One X, but the Evo is a more flexible form of 360-degree camera. One minute it can function as a standard 360-degree camera with back-to-back fisheye lenses, capturing everything around it in decent 5.7K resolution. The next moment, thanks to its hinged design, both lenses will be sitting side by side facing the same direction, allowing them to capture 3D VR content with a 180-degree field-of-view. You’ll really need an Oculus or similar VR headset to appreciate the latter, however – and for most people the One X probably makes more sense.

FlowState Stabilization keeps video shake-free, enabling users to capture footage that’s both smooth and steady. The Insta360 Evo also benefits from high dynamic range capabilities, which make it ideal for shooting scenes that have extreme highlights and shadows. To top it all off, you can create cinematic sequences by slowing down or speeding up footage, all in the Insta360 app.

Insta360 One R

5. Insta360 One R

✅ You want swappable lenses: The modular design allows for both 360 degree shooting as well as 4K wide angle filming. ✅ You want great detail: Image processing results in sharp images, especially during ideal lighting conditions.

❌ You need faultless stitching: Slight abnormalities can occur if your crop covers the border between sources. ❌ You want a big screen: The 1.3-inch square display really limits the viewing of footage and navigating menus.

The headline feature of the Insta360 One R is its modular design. Comprised of three blocks – battery, controls and camera – the lens section can be switched to suit your situation. Besides a 1-inch sensor module, the dual-lens element is seriously exciting: capable of capturing 360-degree footage in 5.7K at 30fps, it transforms the Insta360 One R from action cam to capable 360 cam. Stabilization is excellent, as is the stitching, with only a slight flutter if your crop covers the border between sources. Like the GoPro Max, sharpness drops at the edge of each lens, but results in bright conditions are good, with decent detail and limited noise.

The same can’t be said in low light, where software processing issues arise, with lots of juddering and blurred frames. Editing 360-degree video means selecting and dragging one of five fields of view in the app, which is slightly limiting but ultimately quick, while optional subject-tracking delivers a professional look with minimal effort. It's not quite as slick as the GoPro Max, but it's cheaper, offers a unique modular approach and delivers solid 360-degree footage. With a few software fixes, the Insta360 One R could be a real 360 success.

6. GoPro Fusion

✅ You want durability: The rubber casing provides a durable design that is ideal for knocks and scapes. ✅ You want a waterproof solution: At 5m you'll be able to use this 360 degree camera even when there's water around.

❌ You need to live stream: With nothing to support this you'll need to look elsewhere. ❌ You want fast processing: Downloading of video takes an age and really removes the joy out of the creative process.

GoPro’s highly innovative camera has enjoyed a significant price drop since its launch, making it worth considering if you can't stretch to the newer GoPro Max. The Fusion can capture 360-degree video in 5.2K resolution at 30fps (or 3K at 60fps) which is great, but its real trick was the introduction of the OverCapture mode. Like the GoPro Max and Insta360 One X, this lets you film in 360 degrees then create a standard 16:9 video from the footage.

Add GPS, a compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3D audio, and compatibility with existing GoPro mounts, and the waterproof (to a depth of 5m) Fusion is a powerful camera for the price. The newer GoPro Max brings a front-facing screen, a more compact design, six microphones (rather than four) and better image stabilization. The Fusion's last software update was also over a year ago, if these issues don't bother you then it's definitely worth considering if you need a waterproof 360-degree camera.

How do I choose the best 360 degree camera?

The best 360 cameras come in a range of shapes, sizes and styles. That said, most models work in a similar way: they use multiple camera modules (usually two wide-angle lenses placed back-to-back) to capture footage which can then be digitally combined to create a fully spherical video.

But there are also plenty of differences between the 360 cameras in the list above. Many 360 cameras include features such as automatic stitching (which saves you the hassle of manually aligning multiple captures) and image stabilization for steady shots. The top options, including the Insta360 One X2 and GoPro Max, can also use software trickery to digitally erase compatible hand grips from the frame, so you can record yourself without a big boom  arm  blocking your shot.

Resolution varies from camera to camera. The highest resolution consumer 360 camera in 2021 is the Kandao QooCam 8K, which can shoot 360 video at 8K. More affordable options like the GoPro Max and Insta360 One X2 shoot at 5.6K and 5.7K resolutions respectively. But it’s important to remember that those numbers refer to the full 360 resolution; if you crop down to a flat frame, the resolution will be much lower (normally 1080p or less).

This cropping functionality allows you to extract a standard ‘flat’ video from the 360-degree footage. This means you can shoot everything that’s going on around you, then select an area of focus when you’re back home. This is particularly useful for fast-moving and unpredictable subjects, such as safari animals or extreme sports enthusiasts.

The relevance of other features, such as GPS, Wi-Fi and slow-mo modes, will depend on what and how you like to record. Many of the best 360 cameras feature creative shooting tools and handy connectivity features, plus smartphone apps which make editing and sharing easier.

What’s the best 360 camera for virtual tours?

360 cameras are a great choice for shooting immersive virtual tours. Upload 360 images or video to a compatible hosting platform (such as Facebook or CloudPano) and visitors will be able to explore a location in full 360 degrees from the comfort of their home. This is particularly useful for venues such as a hotels and museums, as well as real estate listings.

The right 360 camera for your virtual tour will depend primarily on whether you plan to shoot a video tour or a static photo tour.

It’s possible to create a virtual tour simply by walking around a location while recording video. If this will be your approach, any of the top cameras in the list above should produce smooth, sharp 360-degree footage. The Kandao QooCam 8K in particular can capture detailed 8K video and benefits from SuperSteady stabilization smarts (although file sizes for 8K video are much larger and may be compressed by certain platforms).

Most virtual tours use 360-degree stills shot by a tripod-mounted camera. The best 360 cameras in 2021 can capture sharp, immersive images which are perfect for virtual tours. The Kandao QooCam 8K is again a great option here: it shoots dynamic still images at a resolution of 29.4MP (the highest of any camera in our list), allowing viewers to pan around sharp virtual scenes. It also features a tripod mount on its base for easy positioning.

If you’re looking for a less expensive option, our favorite 360 camera – the Insta360 X3 – is an affordable way to shoot 360 stills for virtual tours. It also features a tripod mount and captures 360 stills at a respectable 18MP.

How we test 360 degree cameras

Our reviews are always hands on and actively compare cameras to previous versions or alternative models. We look at various elements, including design, features, performance, and image and video quality.

First up is the camera's design. During this step, we're wanting to get an idea of how the camera handles. Is it small or big, light or heavy, and is that positive or negative for the target audience? We'll put the user interface through its paces and decide how user-friendly and intuitive the workflows are. All of this will be done utilising the built-in touchscreen, which will be assessed for size, quality, and responsiveness.

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

360 degree cameras are well known for having various modes and feature sets that complement the core 360 degree filming functionality. We test all of these features to see how good they are and whether they are usable in a production context. While doing this, we'll use a formatted SD card to capture both video and photos to enable us to comment on the performance as it relates to quality, low-light performance, and battery life.

These types of cameras rely heavily on the use of a companion app, which we also download and test. If the app unlocks specific features or enables a live-feed view, then we'll comment on that too.

After all our testing is complete, we take everything we've learned about the camera and factor in its price to get a sense of the value-for-money it offers before reaching our final verdict.

Framing and overall composition are critical to great photos and videos, and with 360 cameras, painstakingly deciding on what to shoot is no longer as much of an issue. These unique cameras literally shoot everything around you on all sides, giving you full control in the editing process of what’s in the frame. That’s because 360 cameras use two back-to-back fisheye lenses and then merge these images together seamlessly. It allows you to capture everything and then reframe to get the optimal images afterward using a mobile or computer app.

Many 360 cameras on the market are designed for use in action-adventure and sports. These cameras have amazing image stabilization and often are durable and waterproof. To add to the ease of use, most are lightweight and small, and it’s possible to strap them on or position them easily without a lot of fuss. Other 360 cameras focus on delivering cinematic-quality images and would be useful in shooting virtual reality or high-quality panoramic-style video and still images. No matter what you plan on using it for, 360 cameras offer a fun and versatile way to create content.

How we chose the best 360 cameras

When selecting the cameras included in this guide, we considered a range of specs and features that are essential to any camera type. Resolution, overall image and video quality, stabilization, sound quality, and battery life were all essential components of successful 360 cameras. As most of these devices are also intended to be action cameras, we looked at portability, durability, and mounting methods. Lastly, since 360-degree footage requires editing, we assessed each camera’s associated editing program. Our decisions were based on a mix of hands-on experience, brand knowledge, editorial reviews, and user feedback.

Abby Ferguson

  • Sensor size: ½-inch
  • 360 Video resolution: 5.7K
  • 360 Still image resolution: 72 megapixels
  • Memory card slot: microSD/microSDHC (UHS-I)
  • Waterproof: Yes, to 33 feet
  • Dimensions: 4.5 x 1.8 x 1.3 inches
  • Weight: 6.3 ounces
  • Very effective image stabilization
  • Excellent video quality
  • Great sound quality from built-in mics
  • Lots of photo and video modes
  • App takes time to learn
  • Photos are slow to take

The Insta360 X3 is a versatile, well-rounded 360 camera , which is why it wins our top spot. The camera features a half-inch sensor, which is larger than the previous generation of this device. It’s capable of high-quality 5.7K 360-degree video or immersive 72-megapixel 360 photos. You can also use just a single lens (on either the front or back) if you don’t want 360 footage all the time. There are lots of different modes, including 8K timelapse, active HDR, Starlapse, burst shooting, and more, giving you lots of flexibility.

As a true action camera, the X3 offers impressive image stabilization to smooth out your video, even during jumpy movement. It’s also ruggedly built and is waterproof to 33 feet without a case, making it a fantastic underwater camera . And the Invisible Dive Case makes it possible to record seamless 360 videos even deeper. However, since it is a 360 camera with two protruding lenses, you’ll need to take care to keep those safe. If you don’t buy a bundle, you may want to purchase a lens cap or even some Sticky Lens Guards to keep them safe.

The X3 is capable of taking photos, but it is a bit slow to take and process them, so it can be a bit frustrating and isn’t ideal for action shots. The mobile app also takes some time to learn, and some things can only be done on the desktop app. But this is a do-it-all 360 action camera with a reasonable price compared to other options, making it the best choice for most.

Insta360 Pro 2 professional 360 camera

  • Sensor size: Unspecified
  • Maximum 360 video resolution: 8K
  • Maximum 360 still image resolution: 144 megapixels
  • Memory card slot: SD/SDHC/SDXC
  • Waterproof: No
  • Dimensions: 5.6 x 5.6 x 5.6 inches
  • Weight: 3.41 pounds
  • Class-leading image and video quality
  • Long-range monitoring makes recording easier
  • Spherical spatial audio
  • Pro-level controls and features
  • Requires six microSD cards for each camera along with an SD card

Although most 360 cameras are capable of excellent image and video quality, they fall a bit short of pro-level capabilities. The Insta360 Pro 2 is an answer for professionals wanting to create high-end content for VR or 3D applications. This device relies on six individual cameras with f/2.4 fisheye lenses. It also features four microphones for recording ambisonic spatial audio , so you can get immersive sound with your videos.

The Pro 2 is capable of recording 3D videos at up to 8K 30p or 2D video at up to 60 fps. If you lower the quality to 4K, you can get up to 120 fps. And you can even live-stream 360-degree content up to 4K quality. It is also capable of still photos up to 12K, but this requires stitching via a computer. It offers an HDR function for better quality even in tricky light, and the 9-axis FlowState stabilization is highly effective for creating smooth videos even when moving.

One exciting selling point of the Pro 2 is its FarSight. This feature allows you to connect a transmitter to the camera and a receiver to your phone or tablet and control the device from a distance. Insta360 says this provides a ground-to-ground range of 1000 feet, meaning you won’t have to hide last minute when recording 360 content. This is an expensive device, but it does provide a long list of pro-level features for those who need the best.

Kandao QooCam 8K 360 camera

  • Sensor size: 1/1.7-inch
  • Maximum 360 still image resolution: 20 megapixels
  • Memory card slot: microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC
  • Dimensions: 7 x 2.2 x 1.3 inches
  • Weight: 9.7 ounces
  • 4K slow-motion footage
  • High-quality video
  • Manual exposure settings
  • Effective stabilization
  • Not waterproof
  • Still pricey

Creative filmmakers on a budget will enjoy the ability to capture 360 video and photos in 8K resolution without spending a small fortune. The KanDao QooCam is still not a cheap device, but it offers a lot of quality for the price. The camera boasts two 20-megapixel CMOS sensors. These help capture 8K footage at 30 fps and 4K video at 120 fps for epic slo-mo video. It’s also capable of 16-bit color stills that are rich and detailed.

A 2.4-inch OLED touchscreen on the camera allows you to easily compose shots and adjust controls. It offers a long list of quick modes such as pano, super slow-motion, live-streaming, and more. Or you can take manual control of the exposure for fine-tuned results. And the 6-axis image stabilization effectively smooths out video even during jarring movements. While the image quality certainly is impressive, this camera is not waterproof or drop-proof. As a result, you’ll want to be careful when using this outdoors or when recording action.

GoPro MAX 360 camera for vlogging

  • Maximum 360 video resolution: 5K
  • Maximum 360 still image resolution: 5760 x 2880 megapixels
  • Waterproof: Yes, to 16 feet
  • Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.7 x 1.6 inches
  • Weight: 5.75 ounces
  • Very compact and lightweight
  • Can record traditional GoPro wide-angle footage
  • Superb stabilization
  • Six microphones record 360 audio
  • 360-degree photo quality isn’t great

GoPro cameras are extremely well known for their impressive quality and stabilization. And while its 360 camera offering may be a few years old now, it still has a lot to offer. The camera is capable of 5K 360 video, or 5760 x 2880 still photos. These are stitched automatically in the camera, making it faster to edit and share. You can also use a single lens to record traditional GoPro footage, making it very versatile.

Vloggers will appreciate the high-quality sound that’s possible from the GoPro MAX. It features six separate microphones, so you can record 360-degree surround sound from the tiny camera. It also supports live streaming up to 1080p. The MAX is waterproof without a case to 16 feet and is ruggedly built, so a drop or two won’t kill it. And you get GoPro’s impressive stabilization for smooth video as well.

Ricoh Theta Z1 360 Camera

  • Sensor size: 1-inch
  • Maximum 360 video resolution: 4K
  • Maximum 360 still image resolution: 23 megapixels
  • Memory card slot: None, 51GB of internal memory
  • Dimensions: 5.2 x 1.9 x 1.2 inches
  • Weight: 6.42 ounces
  • Large, back-illuminated CMOS sensors
  • Excellent low-light performance
  • Easy to use
  • Thid-party plugin access
  • Internal memory is limiting

The Ricoh Theta Z1 was the first 360 camera to feature large, one-inch sensors, which gives it an edge in terms of image quality. And these sensors are back-illuminated, making them even better in low-light situations. As a result, this camera is a favorite for real estate virtual tours. Plus, the Automatic DR (dynamic range) compensation makes it easier to get well-exposed images even in the high-contrast lighting scenarios you’re likely to find in interior spaces.

The camera offers a range of shooting modes and settings that allow for lots of creative control. That includes a selectable aperture from f/2.1, f/3.5, and f/5.6 for greater control of depth of field. It supports raw file format for enhanced editing of the 23-megapixel photos. And the dual microphones result in quality audio. The Theta Z1 is a more expensive 360 camera, so it is best suited for advanced photographers with experience and a need for high-quality content.

Best budget: Ricoh Theta SC2 WHITE

a white Ricoh Theta SC2 360 camera

  • Sensor size: 1/2.3-inch
  • Maximum 360 still image resolution: 5376 x 2688 megapixels
  • Memory card slot: None, 14GB internal memory
  • Dimensions: 1.78 x 5.14 x 0.9 inches
  • Weight: 3.67 ounces
  • Available in four colors
  • Very slim and lightweight
  • Quality is below more expensive models

The Ricoh Theta SC2 is a great entry-level 360 camera for the casual user, thanks to its very approachable price. It’s also extremely slim compared to other models, thanks to Ricoh’s proprietary folded optics system. And with the four different color options, it ends up looking more like a remote or phone than a 360 camera. Despite the budget price, the camera is capable of 4K 360 video that is stitched in-camera. And it’s capable of 5376 x 2688 360-degree photos as well.

The Theta SC2 is extremely easy to use, with plenty of modes to easily produce quality content. It corrects for camera shake to produce smooth videos when hand-holding the camera. Face Mode automatically centers faces in the middle of the frame and ensures the image is properly exposed on the face instead of the background. And Night Mode corrects images in low-light settings. The quality of photos and videos won’t match what you will get from a more expensive 360 camera, but it is quite excellent for the price.

What to consider when buying the best 360 cameras

360 cameras should be easy and fun to use. And they should provide impressive high-resolution panoramic views of the world around you. While there aren’t endless 360 options available, especially with vastly different specs, it can still be confusing to sort through what matters. Below are some key items to pay attention to when shopping for a 360 camera.

Image stabilization

You know the cell phone video you took while running after your kids that later made you all feel like throwing up? Yeah, you can tell yourself it’s artistic, but really nobody likes to watch a bouncy, shaking camera. Luckily, most 360 cameras feature image stabilization software that smooths out videos for you without any additional fancy gear, with pretty impressive results. Some cameras offer more effective stabilization than others, however. If you are hoping to use your 360 camera for action videos, you may want to watch sample footage to verify it will offer enough stabilization.

Maybe you’re that person who is first in line for gadgets that offer the latest cutting-edge technology, or maybe you just want to shoot the sharpest, most cinematic 360 footage possible. 360 cameras with 8K video will deliver some truly mind-blowing images. While 4K video is impressive enough, 8K offers the most impressive images the human eye can recognize.

An 8K resolution will generate a noticeably sharper image with more details and makes your images qualify as VR-grade video. Currently, there are only a few brands on the consumer market that offer this level of quality. Previously this resolution was only available for professional use and was extremely expensive. Recent innovations have allowed this technology to become lighter, smaller, and more reasonably priced, but it still comes with a fairly steep price tag. If you’re interested in creative 360 film-making, 8K technology is a pretty fantastic feature to look for, but be prepared to pay higher prices.

Waterproofing

If you want to capture and share highlights from your action-packed adventures , you’ll want a camera that is durably built and able to handle whatever you throw at it. Whether you are snorkeling, sailing, skiing, or splashing through muddy puddles on your mountain bike, investing in a 360-action camera designed for not just movement but for water will ensure your camera will last.

It’s important to read through the specific guidelines and manual for use, as each camera will have a limit as to how far you can go underwater, if at all. The most common waterproofing depth is 16 feet, though some go to 33 feet. For deeper water, you will need to consider additional accessories for your camera, like a dive case or dive bubble.

Low light abilities

Even the most experienced photographers know that shooting in low light is a real challenge. For example, in low light, a photographer might increase the ISO settings, use slower shutter speeds or adjust the aperture. This is when experience and knowledge of your camera’s settings really come into play to get the best results.

The best 360 cameras for low light photography feature top-of-the-line image sensors that offer high-resolution imagining as well as high ISO settings with excellent noise handling. High ISO settings are very important for low-light photography because they allow you to capture images in darker environments and can prevent motion blur even when shooting ultra-fast action.

Editing tools

You don’t have to go to film school or have been James Cameron’s production assistant to use a 360 camera. In fact, they can be fairly easy and fun to use. Many of these cameras are even ideal for beginners and will help you out by doing some of the work for you. Being a dual-lens machine, there will be seams between the camera’s images, and editing these seams is referred to as stitching. While these seams can be edited (or stitched) in apps, many cameras stitch the seams on their own. As a beginner, it’s easier to get a camera to do that work for you.

Even if the camera stitches the 360 photos and videos for you, you’ll likely need to do some level of editing in order to share your content. Most camera companies offer mobile or desktop apps for editing, whereas some allow for plugins to work with programs like Adobe Premiere Pro. If you want the ability to quickly edit video on your phone and share to social media, be sure to look for a camera that provides an easy-to-use mobile app.

When it comes to cameras, typically, you do get what you pay for. Most 360 cameras are fairly expensive, but they offer impressive stabilization, high-end image quality, and loads of features. There are some very inexpensive 360 cameras available for sale, but we recommend at least going for an entry-level camera manufactured by a quality, trusted brand. These entry-level cameras are designed to be affordable and are often easier to use in order to appeal to beginners. Some may have less advanced features, but there are options that don’t sacrifice image quality.

Q: How do I choose a 360 camera?

The best 360 camera will be easy to use, will produce quality images, and have a coherent field of view. Whether you choose a single-lens system or multiple lenses and sensors, the images should be minimally distorted. Finally, the camera should come with an app to stitch your footage together, share footage, and even live stream.

Q: How does a 360 camera work?

A 360 camera uses multiple lenses to capture different directions at the same time, offering a clear spherical view of the surroundings. Most utilize two fisheye lenses pointed in opposite directions, with each grabbing 200 degrees of image per lens. This results in 400 degrees of coverage, which involves some overlap. Many cameras automatically stitch the separate photos or videos together to hide the overlap and seam, though some do require manual editing.

Q: Which is the best 360 video camera app?

While all the best 360 cameras will come with their own apps, we recommend the user-friendly GoPro or Insta360 apps. Some editing features these apps allow for are quick auto-editing, reframing, clip creation, color correction, and sharing.

Final thoughts on the best 360 cameras

  • Best affordable 8K camera: Kandao QooCam

360 cameras will provide uniquely stunning panoramic views of your world. They also offer much more flexibility when editing, allowing you to reframe as you see fit. And most of these devices are highly-capable action cameras, making it possible to record immersive, epic footage of your adventures. If you’re hoping to capture a different perspective, a 360 camera is the way to go.

Why trust us

PopPhoto has a long history of delivering the opinions of some of the sharpest and most prolific camera dorks the world has to offer. Since 1937, we’ve been reviewing cameras, providing wisdom from well-known photographers, and generally just nerding out about all that goes into making great pictures. Our current crop of writers and editors have decades of professional photography and camera writing experience among them. Collectively, we’ve probably shot with just about every camera and lens combo you can imagine—as well as some obscure stuff you may not even know about. Remember the Casio Tryx folding camera? PopPhoto does.

We also get that buying a camera is a big decision, which is why we’re dedicated to helping folks choose the right one (or, in our case “ones”) for their needs. Case in point: Handing over top dollar for an expensive rig may leave you unsatisfied if it doesn’t fit your preferred shooting style. Sure, a $6,000 sports-oriented DSLR can capture landscapes, but do you really need to do it at 30 frames-per-second? No, you don’t.

Want to make your video stand out? A 360-degree camera captures footage all around you for virtual tours, skiing videos, real estate, live streaming and more.

Camera Gear Guides | Camera Guides | By Tania Braukamper | Last Updated: February 7, 2024

Investing in one of the best 360 cameras is a wise choice for photographers here in 2024.

A 360-degree camera helps you create something truly unique – your photos will stand out more and clients will be interested in your services.

They’re also a lot of fun! You can record everything around you with one button press, then select the shots you want to use later.

Insta360 x3

The ultimate waterproof 360° action camera provides endless creative possibilities. Fun, easy and incredibly addictive to use. Free companion app is also great.

360-degree footage can be viewed using specialist apps, or you can edit the content into regular video to be shared on social media.

The best 360 cameras feature automatic stitching, live-streaming , image-stabilization, 4k and 8k video resolution, slo-mo modes, Wi-Fi, GPS and more.

You can use 360 cameras for selfies with multiple camera angles, for immersive real estate virtual tours, live-streaming an office meeting, or for skiing down the side of a mountain.

Although you can use them for photography, your smartphone or other cameras are usually better – 360 cameras are best suited for spherical video.

Whatever the case, it’s important to know how to choose a 360 camera, which is where this guide will help.

Let’s take a closer look at the best 360 cameras of the year.

Table of Contents

What is the Best 360 Camera in 2024?

Insta360 x3.

insta360-x3

  • Incredible image stabilization
  • Excellent app for easy editing
  • Fully waterproof
  • 4 x microphones for spatial sound
  • Invisible selfie stick
  • 360 and single-lens capture
  • Underwhelming sound quality
  • Performance decreases in low light

Is the Insta360 X3 the best 360 camera in 2024? While that depends a little on your needs, we’d argue that it’s definitely a tough one to beat.

As well as offering superb quality 5.7K video recording, it boasts one of the best video stabilization systems around.

The proprietary FlowState Stabilization on the Insta360 X3 360 degree camera is the best on the market. You can take this little gem on bumpy adventures and still come back with buttery-smooth footage.

If you want to capture regular footage, simply switch over to Steady Cam mode. Instead of shooting in 360 degrees, it’ll shoot with one lens only.

You also get super slow-mo and hyper lapse video modes, further increasing creative options.

Another major advantage of the Insta360 X3 is the video editing app that comes with it. Capture footage in every direction, then easily choose which angle you want to keep later in editing.

The app also offers a bunch of AI tools that are both powerful and intuitive – it’s great to use them on your smartphone, so you don’t need to wait to be at home on your desktop computer.

The camera itself is rectangular and pocketable as well as durable. If you want to go diving with it, no worries: it’s waterproof up to 10 meters (32 feet).

It even has an invisible selfie stick built-in – hold the camera then watch the stick magically disappear in your edits!

If we have a few nitpicks, they’re that the image quality suffers in low light and that the audio quality could be better – the use of an external action cam mic like these would be a good sound quality upgrade.

That said, the Insta360 X3 definitely won’t fail to impress, and is our choice of the best camera made by Insta360.

Whether you want to use it as an action cam, for real estate 360 camera tours and videos, or to capture fun holiday adventures, it’s definitely one of the best 360 cameras on the market.

  • Insta360 X3 Review

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

  • Responsive touch screen
  • Great stability
  • 6 x microphones
  • Relatively expensive
  • Inferior frame rate when in single-lens mode

While there are many worthy GoPro alternatives on the market in 2024, the GoPro Max more than deserves a place on our list of best 360 cameras.

This feature-packed camera offers all the bells and whistles you could want – though it does so at a slightly higher price than many of its competitors.

Unlike the Hero range of GoPro action cameras, the Max offers 360-degree recording at 5.6K as well as acting as a single-lens camera should you prefer to keep it simple.

That said, don’t expect the “Hero mode” of the GoPro Max to rival the quality of the Hero itself: adding the 360 functionality requires some sacrifices. Namely, no RAW format for stills and a lower video resolution and frame rate.

If spherical footage is your main game, however, the Max will serve you well – and there are plenty of other features to get excited about as well.

There’s the HyperSmooth stabilization feature, excellent horizon levelling, and commendable sound quality which is superior to other 360 cameras due to the inclusion of six internal microphones.

All that is packaged into a durable body that’s waterproof to 4.8 meters (16 feet).

And let’s not forget the PowerPano feature for easy, no-pan panoramas, and the TimeWarp stabilized time-lapse videos .

Like the Insta360 above, the GoPro Max is accompanied by an intuitive smartphone app that lets you edit videos with ease (though, comparing the two, we still think the Insta360 app wins out).

Overall, the GoPro Max has plenty to offer – and when it comes to the niche of 360-degree action cameras, the renowned GoPro brand stands its ground with good reason.

Insta360 One R

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

  • Unique modular design
  • 5.7K video quality
  • Vlog-friendly reversible screen
  • AI-powered subject tracking
  • Changing modules can be fiddly
  • Only 2 mics

The Insta360 One R ticks many of the same boxes as the One X2 (see our #1 pick for best 360 camera above). In fact, at first glance, the specs and features look pretty similar.

Both offer FlowState Stabilization and horizon leveling, invisible selfie stick, AI editing via the impressively intuitive app, and excellent video quality – 5.7K video resolution for 360-degree footage. This makes it a great live 360 camera.

So what sets the two apart?

The biggest difference is that the One R is a modular camera. In other words, you can transform it into a non-360 camera via the interchangeable lenses, which gives it unique versatility.

On the downside, it has a slightly lower battery life, two microphones instead of four, and slightly duller colours.

However, don’t let those small differences between the two models deter you; as far as the best 360 cameras go the One R still offers excellent value.

Other features worth mentioning include real-time playback, HDR photos and videos, StarLapse mode for astrophotography, AI-powered subject tracking, and timeshift and slow-mo modes.

One other small thing to note is that the One R is a little fiddly when switching the modular attachments, especially if you’re using the waterproof housing which requires prior removal before you make any changes to the camera set up.

However, all up, if you’re looking for a versatile 360 camera with great image quality and a laundry list of fun features, don’t forget to check this one out.

Ricoh Theta Z1

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

  • 2 x 1-inch sensors
  • HDR image processing
  • Variable aperture
  • Large internal memory
  • Beautiful 23MP stills
  • Very expensive
  • Not waterproof
  • Non-removable battery & average battery life

Launched back in 2019, the Ricoh Theta Z1 offered consumers the first-ever 360 camera to feature dual 1-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensors.

With most 360 cameras using 1/2.3-inch sensors, this one gains an estimated 2 stops in low light plus one extra stop of dynamic range .

The Theta Z1 offers the rare quality of a variable lens aperture, opening up the possibility of longer exposure times as well as being able to maximise available light. You even get an aperture priority mode.

Does all this equate to the most impressive image quality you can get from a 360 camera? Good question!

The Z1 allows you to shoot photos in RAW at an excellent 23MP resolution. On the other hand, the video resolution isn’t as high as some of the other best 360 cameras on this list.

While video quality definitely gains an advantage from the sensor size and variable aperture, plus an impressive image processing algorithm, it’s limited to 4K. That puts a bit of a damper Ricoh’s offering, given other top 360 cameras offer resolutions of 5.7K.

Don’t take that to mean the video quality of the Z1 is in any way poor – it’s not. This is a camera aimed at the enthusiast to pro-level market. But it does feel like a missed opportunity to really knock it out of the park.

Other things we like about the Theta Z1 are the increased internal storage space (51GB), excellent HDR image processing, 4K live-streaming, and user-friendly editing software.

Do note that none of this comes cheap: Ricoh’s best 360 camera will set you back around US$1,000.

If it fits your budget, and pro-grade sensors are a priority (especially if you’re looking to shoot more stills than video), do give it a deeper look.

GoPro Fusion

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

  • Rugged body
  • Voice command functions
  • Good battery life
  • Exposed and unprotected lens
  • Requires 2 x microSD cards to function
  • Outdated model

The Fusion was GoPro’s first foray into the 360 camera market and, despite its affordable price point, it still makes the list of the best 360 cameras today.

You can pick up the Fusion for less than half the price of the GoPro Max. While it goes without saying that you’ll have to compromise on some specs, if you’re on a budget, it’s worth checking out what the Fusion has to offer.

Firstly, you get good quality capture with 5.2K videos and 18MP photos. Turning your spherical, 360-degree footage into traditional 1080P videos is relatively simple, though somewhat time-consuming, via GoPro’s proprietary smartphone app.

Note that the 5.2K video resolution is limited to 30fps – if you want to shoot at 60fps you’ll need to drop to 3K.

The Fusion has 12 voice-control commands that work well and are particularly useful when you’re using it as an action camera (look Mum, no hands!).

The removable battery will net you 75-80 minutes of recording time – not a bad battery life – and the durable body is waterproof to 5 meters (16 feet).

Unlike the more expensive GoPro options, this one lacks digital lenses, so you don’t have the option to change your field of view. It also lacks the PowerPano and TimeWarp Video features.

However, if you’re on a budget and happy for a slightly stripped-back version of a GoPro 360 camera, this may just be the little gadget for you.

Rylo iPhone + Android 360 Video Camera

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

  • Good stabilization
  • Compact, uncomplicated body
  • Fast and reliable USB connection
  • User-friendly app experience
  • Mount adapter included
  • Performance suffers in low light
  • No live-streaming
  • Waterproof casing and invisible selfie stick cost extra

Who needs screens or viewfinders when you have a smartphone?!

That’s the logic behind the Rylo 360 Video Camera, which lets you use your Android or iOS device to both edit and  direct your footage.

Capture 5.8K spherical video (limited to 24fps) and 6K photo panoramas using your smartphone’s touchscreen to control features like perspective and subject tracking.

After you’re done shooting, use the Points feature to tap on specific points of interest in your footage. You can then use these points to create automatic pans, reframe your shot, or track objects.

The app also makes it easy to add effects like timelapse and motion blur .

By stripping back the hardware to a small cube with just two buttons, the Rylo becomes both ultra-compact and refreshingly simple to operate.

The camera itself is unfortunately not waterproof , though housing is available at an extra cost. It also has a relatively short battery life of 60 minutes.

Another omission is live-streaming capability; if you want to live-stream video, you’ll have to go for one of the other best 360 camera options on this list.

On the plus side, image stabilization and horizon correction are both very effective, and connecting to your phone is easy with options for Bluetooth or cable (Android and iPhone cables both included). USB transfer is fast and reliable.

If the idea of controlling your 360 camera via your no-doubt-omnipresent smartphone appeals, check out the Rylo as a very worthy contender.

Samsung Gear 360

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

  • Good value for money
  • Simple operation
  • Hand-holdable
  • VR headset compatible
  • Top-heavy design not stable
  • Video resolution limited to 4K

Before we close out or list of the best 360 cameras, this option from Samsung warrants a mention.

The form factor varies from those of its competitors, with what looks like a bobbly head atop a handle-like body.

The shape has both an upside and a downside: it makes the camera easy to hold in hand, but somewhat unstable if you try to sit it on a surface that’s anything less than perfectly even.

The Gear 360 has an IP53 water-resistant rating but isn’t fully waterproof.

In terms of video resolution, this slightly older model is limited to 4K — its biggest disadvantage in a world that’s moved on to higher video quality.

Still, the lower video resolution doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker, especially if you consider that the price tag is considerably lower than many competitors.

The battery of the Samsung is non-removable but battery life is good at 90 minutes of run time. It also supports live-streaming.

If there’s one audience this 360 camera will particularly appeal to, it’s those with a Samsung VR headset. Being able to easily upload your 360-degree footage into a world of virtual reality is one of the prime reasons to consider this over other cameras.

Despite being geared towards Samsung smartphone users, the software for this 360 camera is also compatible with iOS and Mac devices.

How do I Choose a 360° Camera?

Choosing the best 360 camera for you comes down to your specific needs and priorities. Some things to consider:

Obviously, a higher video resolution will go a long way to ensuring you get crisp, clear footage. These days, anything below 4K is fairly obsolete in a 360 camera, and above 4K is ideal.

That said, resolution is not the whole story when it comes to image quality. Also consider factors like frame rate (minimum of 30fps is best) and dynamic range to get a fuller picture of what the quality will be.

Are you looking for a tiny action cam you can mount anywhere? Or would a larger form factor serve you just as well?

360-degree cameras come in various shapes and sizes, so look for one that matches your use case.

  • Battery life

Let’s get one thing clear: battery life in any kind of tiny camera is never going to knock your socks off.

Still, battery life does vary between devices – so depending on your needs, it may be something to compare and consider.

360 cameras can be used for a range of things, from immersive VR experiences to documenting wild action-adventure sports. The features that most appeal will depend on your intent.

360 cameras can include features like timelapse, slow-mo, live-stream capability, HDR , AI-powered editing, and more.

Another specific feature to decide upon is whether you want your camera to be able to shoot standard single-lens photos and videos as well as in 360 degrees. Not all offer this capability, and it does add a layer of versatility to your purchase.

Little explanation needed here! The best 360 cameras range in price from a few hundred bucks to over a thousand. That means your budget is obviously going to be a factor.

Insta360 X3 display

1. Insta360 One X3

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Insta360 X3 is the best 360 camera for most people. That's because, like its predecessor (the X2), the X3 has the most innovative software and features in addition to being a great piece of hardware.

The X3 is water resistant to 10 meters (33 feet), and has a much larger touchscreen display than its predecessor, which makes previewing video and changing settings on the fly easy. It also has a decent battery life of up to 80 minutes.

The X3 has fantastic image-stabilization feature that will make even the bumpiest videos look smooth, and can capture 5.7K video at 30 fps, and 4K video at up to 60 fps. Its FlowState image stabilization algorithm helps smooth shots, and a TimeShift feature lets you slow down or speed up specific segments of your videos.

Insta360 One RS in snow

2. Insta360 One RS

For those looking for a 360 camera with more of a traditional action camera design, the Insta360 One RS is your best bet. Like its predecessor, the Insta360 One R, this innovative camera has a modular design that lets you swap out its 360 lens for a wide angle 4K camera or a camera with a 1-inch sensor. What's more, the camera has some other pretty cool features, including video stabilization and a comprehensive app that has a lot of powerful editing tools.

We like that the One RS' display can be turned around so you can frame yourself in videos, but its small size relative to the GoPro makes it much more difficult to navigate on-screen menus. And, like older GoPros, you'll need to use a frame to mount it to anything. But, this is one versatile 360 camera.

Best 360 cameras: GoPro Hero Max

3. GoPro Max

Unlike most 360 cameras, the GoPro Max has a small display on its back that lets you view what its cameras are looking at. While it's not as handy as it seems, the large display does make it easy to navigate and change the Max's settings without having to use your smartphone.

The GoPro Max also has a HyperSmooth stabilization feature, so your bumpy video will look nice and smooth, and image quality from the camera — up to a max resolution of 5.6K/30 fps — lives up to GoPro's typical high standards. Plus, GoPro's app is loaded with features, including the ability to livestream video from the Max.

However, the GoPro Max's design requires the use of a selfie stick, and lacks a tripod mount, so you have to use it with one of GoPro's accessories. At $499, it costs more than the Insta360 One X2, but the GoPro Max delivers.

Best 360 cameras: Ricoh Theta Z1

4. Ricoh Theta Z1

One of the issues with 360 cameras is that, because of their relatively small sensor size, they're not that great when it comes to low-light photography and videos. If you need a 360 camera for that purpose — and price is no object — then you should consider the Ricoh Theta Z1. This well-built device uses two 1-inch, backside-illuminated CMOS sensors, which helps deliver some of the best images we've seen from a 360 camera, especially under less than ideal conditions.

Additionally, the Theta Z1 has dual microphones, which delivered great audio, and the camera's motion stabilization was pretty effective too. The Z1 uses an Android-based operating system, and Ricoh is letting third-party developers create plug-ins for the camera, increasing its functionality. However, this camera lacks expandable storage, it has a relatively short battery life, and you need to use two different apps if you want to edit photos or video. But if you prize image quality above all else, this is the camera to get.

best 360 cameras: Vecnos Iqui

5. Vecnos Iqui

The Vecnos Iqui is a 360 camera designed for those who want to take photos or videos at a moment's notice. The camera starts up in a flash, and snaps pics just as quick. Its small, pen-like shape makes it a cinch to store in your pocket, too.

Iqui’s app then takes your photo and turns it into a mini-movie, which you can then share with the rest of the world. While the quality of its images aren't up to the level of the Insta360s' or the GoPro's, the Iqui's ease of use will make it attractive to the influencers of the world. However, we wish there was more you could do in its app.

Best 360 cameras: Samsung Gear 360

6. Samsung Gear 360

Samsung was one of the first companies to make a truly useful 360 camera, and though it's been several years since it released anything new, its Gear 360 camera from 2017 still remains a fairly useful and functional device. The Gear 360 has a fun, lollipop-like shape that makes it easy to hold in one hand, and can even withstand a few splashes. It also has a tripod mount, if you want to attach it to your bike or something else.

The Gear 360 takes good photos and videos (up to 4K in size), and livestreams to Facebook and YouTube , too. However, there are a few big caveats: it only works fully with Samsung smartphones (from the Galaxy S6 and up), and while it works with the iPhone 7 and later, not all of the camera's features are supported. If you have a Samsung smartphone, though, the Gear 360 is a fun accessory.

What to look for when buying a 360 camera

When shopping for a 360 camera, you'll find that they tend to fall into two camps: small, pocketable stick-style devices, and larger squarish (or circular) cameras. The former, such as the Insta360 One X, tend to be less expensive, and are designed for more casual and impromptu shooting. In the second category are cameras such as the GoPro Hero Max, which are larger and more expensive, but tend to produce higher-quality video. Generally, the design of the latter type of 360 camera also means you'll have to attach it to a tripod or some other mount if you want to capture good footage.

Be sure to think about how you plan to use a 360 camera before you purchase it; if you want to get some fun selfies with friends, then the stick-style cameras will fit your needs well. If you want to capture hair-raising exploits when you go skydiving or skiing, then a larger camera may be the better option.

How we test 360 cameras

You get a lot of weird stares and comments when you test 360 cameras. By now, people are used to seeing action cams like the GoPro , but both the shape and way you mount 360 cameras immediately draws attention.

As they need to capture a full 360 degrees of action, most 360 cams are designed with more than one bulbous lens. And, if you don't want half of the image to be the side of your head, you have to mount the camera pretty far from your body.

You'll also want a selfie stick. With few exceptions, the shape of most of these cameras made them hard to securely hold in my hand.

All of the cameras work with a smartphone in a similar manner; when you turn these cameras on, they all create a Wi-Fi hotspot, which you then connect to with your phone. From there, you open the companion app, and use your phone's display as a viewfinder. For the most part, connecting the cameras to my smartphone was an easy process, and the video feed from the cameras was relatively smooth and stutter-free.

Pocket-lint

Best 360 cameras: capture everything with these amazing cameras.

360 cameras are incredible tools for capturing action, motorsport, real estate photography and virtual tours. Here are our tried-and-tested picks.

360 cameras are gaining popularity, and it's no surprise, they are some of the most versatile filmmaking and photographic tools that money can buy.

Whether you're looking to capture epic action shots with an invisible selfie stick or create virtual tours for a real estate business, 360 is the way to go. What's more, you can even relive moments in VR , if that's your kind of thing.

There is a wide range of capable cameras available at wildly different budgets. Each has its own appeal, so the choice really comes down to what you want to spend and what you want the camera for. Something small you can slip in your pocket, take on a jaunt, or an action camera that can survive being dropped, bashed and used underwater?

Take a look at our list of the best 360 cameras available, whatever your budget is.

Insta360 X3

Insta360 one rs, insta360 one rs 1-inch 360 edition, ricoh theta sc2, our top picks:.

Insta360 is the brand to beat when it comes to 360 cameras, and the X3 is its most refined, feature packed and easy-to-use option to date.

  • Class-leading software
  • Great video and photo fidelity
  • Improved low light and UI
  • Not a huge leap in video performance over the One X2

The Insta360 X3 is extremely easy to recommend. A combination of a practical form factor, superb software and a much-improved user interface makes it a great starting point for just about anyone.

It has massively improved photo capabilities compared to its predecessor, and video fidelity is up there with the best options on the market. It's waterproof and rugged, making it an ideal companion for your next adventure.

GoPro does action cameras better than anyone, and it turns out to be pretty good at 360-degree video too. The Max is a beastly option.

  • The user-friendly video editing system
  • Waterproof and durable build
  • Excellent footage results
  • Touchscreen so that you can see what you're capturing
  • One of the more expensive 360 camera options

The GoPro Max has been around for a while now, but that doesn't mean that it's outdated. GoPro's imaging expertise means that the video and photo quality is still up there with the best of them.

As you might expect from the brand, it features hardy construction and waterproofing, too. This model can withstand submersion at up to 16 feet, making it a great option for watersport filming.

The Insta360 One RS manages to pull off being a jack of all trades without much in the way of compromise.

  • A multitude of capture modes and footage options
  • Easy to use free editing software
  • Swappable lenses and mounting options
  • The 360-module itself hasn't seen any upgrades

The Insta360 One RS improves further on the modular marvel that is the One R. The 360 module itself remains unchanged, which is no bad thing, as it was already superb. However, the new model adds an additional microphone, a beefier battery pack and faster Wi-Fi connectivity.

If you can't decide between an action camera and a 360 camera, the Insta360 One RS is the model for you. It gives you the best of both worlds at a reasonable price, without compromising on quality.

The Insta360 One RS 1-inch 360 edition is a more premium offering, co-engineered with Leica, but still maintaining compatibility with Insta360's modular system.

  • Excellent low light performance
  • Sharper video with better colours
  • Clever use of the modular system
  • The microSD card is hard to access

When it comes to low-light performance, the 1-Inch 360 Edition takes things to the next level. The results are dramatically better than the standard One RS 360 module, and that's the main draw of this new version.

With the higher price point, it's a bit of a niche camera. However, if you're shooting anything commercially, especially real estate and virtual tours, then the upgraded image quality is well worth the price of admission.

Coming in at just under $300, the Ricoh Theta SC2 is one of the most accessible ways to get into 360 video.

  • Excellent 360 stills
  • Stylish lightweight design
  • 14GB built-in storage
  • Software isn't great
  • No proper screen

The Ricoh Theta SC2 has a slim and lightweight design that makes it easy to carry with you, and it's available in a range of colours to match your personal tastes.

We'd say it's not quite on Insta360's level when it comes to video features or software, but if you want to take some excellent 360 photos without breaking the bank, the Ricoh Theta SC2 is well worth looking into.

How we chose the best 360 cameras

We've spent countless hours shooting 360 videos and photos using the cameras on this list, and we try to factor in as many aspects as possible when adding a product to our recommendations.

This includes things like build quality and durability, as well as image fidelity and software features. There are many ways to use a 360 camera, so there's not a singular solution that will be the best for everyone. With this in mind, we've featured options that are video-focused, as well as cameras with a more photographic slant and even low-light performers.

Here at Pocket-lint, we focus on consumer goods, so we haven't delved into the world of massive professional 360 imaging machines, instead, everything you see here is beginner-friendly and portable, as well as remaining relatively affordable.

How to decide on a 360 camera

With such a variety of cameras to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down your choices and find the best 360 camera for you. If you're having trouble deciding, we recommend asking yourself a few questions to help hone in on the right camera.

How will you use a 360 camera?

When you decided to get a 360 camera, what was it that drew you in? Do you like the idea of shooting first and framing later? Is it the invisible selfie stick for videos? Or do you need to create virtual tours and 360 photos for work?

Thinking about how will use the camera should help you narrow down your options. If it's mainly going to be used for still images, then you'll want to pay more attention to the image resolution and dynamic range than things like frame rates and stabilisation, for example. On the flip side, if you'll be filming action sports then stabilisation and robust construction will be high on your list of priorities.

Where will you use a 360 camera?

Now that you've thought about how you're using it, next you should think about where it will be used. For example, if you want a 360 camera for a skiing holiday, then you'll want some level of water resistance, as well as assurance that it'll work in cold temperatures.

If you'll be using it to shoot home interiors, then you'll care more about how it handles dynamic range and low-light shooting.

How will people view your content?

Finally, it's worth thinking about how your content will be delivered. If you're shooting for YouTube and Instagram, then you'll be reframing your 360 footage into traditional video, so you'll want a camera that has great software that allows you to do this with ease.

If you'll be uploading to a 360 photo viewer, or sharing your content as an immersive VR experience, then you'll want to do your research and make sure that your chosen camera is compatible with the relevant applications that you wish to use. We tend to find that opting for a more popular model can be helpful, as you'll find a lot more tutorials and guides that are aimed at users of that specific camera.

As the name implies, a 360-degree camera captures the entire world around it. They were a hot ticket item for a short time, with dozens of models available, including add-ons for trendy smartphones.

The height of the 360-degree phase has passed, but there are still quality options on the market. The use case has shifted, too—in the early days it was all about delivering spherical video for viewing on VR headsets , which have since found a niche for gaming, not media consumption.

Today, creators reach to 360-degree video cameras to gets shots they can't get with a single-lens model. Software pulls out, warps, and reframes dual-lens footage so it can cut right in with 16:9 footage.

Deeper Dive: Our Top Tested Picks

The Insta360 X3 is our favorite 360-degree video camera. Its lenses support 5.7K30 video with Active HDR for better results in mixed lighting and you get access to several creative features including slow-motion bullet time and 8K time lapses. The camera is waterproof and can survive rough handling too, so it's suitable for mounting and capturing action. Insta360's software tools put the X3 over the top because they make it easy to edit and reframe spherical video in creative ways.

  • 5.7K30 HDR video
  • Slim, waterproof build
  • Big touch screen with straightforward interface
  • Robust desktop and mobile editing tools
  • Loads of capture modes
  • Video must be processed before editing
  • A bit of a learning curve to grasp 360-degree editing
  • Mobile editing app limits resolution

The Max is GoPro's sophomore 360-degree effort and it offers a more streamlined experience than its predecessor, the Fusion. The Max captures quality 5.6K footage, with software support to reframe and change the projection of video. The editing tools aren't quite as slick as those you get with the Instax360 X3, but vloggers might prefer the Max because of its premium, six-mic audio array.

  • 360-degree capture
  • Also works as a single-lens camera
  • Intuitive software tools
  • Strong stabilization
  • Good in-camera audio
  • Waterproof without a case
  • Integrated mounting clips
  • Effective resolution is really 1080p
  • Single-lens capture tops out at 60fps
  • Requires more editing time to get the best results from spherical footage

The Ricoh SC2 snaps smartphone-quality spherical stills using dual lenses. It stands up by itself, can attach to a tripod, and works with an app for remote control. It's also available in several fun colors.

The slim Theta X features a color display for phone-free setups and quick image reviews. It snaps 60MP images, records video at 5.7K quality, and includes 46GB of internal storage. It's a good fit for real estate and other 360-degree imaging applications.

The Insta360 One RS sets itself apart from dedicated 360-degree cameras because of its modular design. You can use its dual-lens 360 cam to roll 5.7K spherical footage, or swap in the 4K Boost lens for digitally stabilized 16:9 at up to 60fps, 6K CinemaScope at 24fps, and 48MP Quad Bayer stills.

  • Compact design
  • Swappable lens modules
  • Waterproof to 16 feet
  • Stabilized 4K60 and 5.7K 360 video
  • HDR available at 4K30
  • 2:35 wide-screen mode
  • Mobile and desktop app support
  • In-camera mics disappoint outdoors
  • Modular design can get in the way
  • Small touch LCD
  • Battery only good for 75 minutes of 4K
  • Heat can limit long-form recordings

Production companies and VR pros should consider buying the $5,000 Insta360 Pro II. It records 8K footage, supports 3D, and can live stream at 4K quality.

Both of the Theta Z1's lenses use a big, Type 1 sensor, so it produces better low-light photos than cheaper alternatives. Whether that advantage or the quality 23MP photos justify the camera's high price depends on your needs.

Realtors and 3D model makers should consider the Matterport MC250 Pro2. It's a pro tool that requires a subscription to use, but it's invaluable for creating 3D models and all-around photos of interior spaces. If you want to create 3D models outdoors, the more durable Matterport Pro3 is a step-up option for $5,995.

Buying Guide: The Best 360 Cameras for 2024

Although most cameras cut out a slice of the world for posterity, dual-lens models take the opposite approach. These 360-degree cameras record everything around them, so you can share footage on VR platforms or creatively reframe video to fit a 16:9 screen.

360-degree video cameras should appeal most to thrill-seekers who want to go beyond what a single-lens GoPro can capture, as well as to travel vloggers who like to guide viewers through famous locales. But realtors and interior designers who want to show off homes and produce virtual tours are better off with a photo-first model. Ricoh offers virtual tour software for its Theta series, and Matterport is a familiar name in the real estate photography space.

With that in mind, here are our top picks for 360-degree photo and video cameras, along with some guidance for each category.

360 Video Cameras

17. Rylo 360

Rylo compilation footage

Probably one of the best 360 cameras for action sports out there. It has motion stabilization keeping the horizon level no matter what you’re doing. It’s easy to attach to a bike, helmet, or any other piece of equipment you might be needing. Although, it is a little strange that the camera itself isn’t waterproof, so you’ll need to get a case.

  • Cons: Not waterproof
  • Price: $199

16. Garmin VIRB 360

See what the VIRB can do

Seriously high quality 5.7K video with 4 channel audio. Of course it has an integrated GPS, but it’s waterproof feature is great for action videographer as it goes up to 33 feet. It provides internal stitching which is great but only up 4K, and Mac software doesn’t support 5.7K. It’s a solid, well-built camera, but it might be wise to take a look at a few other 360 cameras that provide similar features for a lower price.

  • 5.7K res. Weight: 160g. Battery life at 65 minutes. Waterproof up to 33ft, GPS, gyroscope, accelerometer, x4 microphones. Max. video resolution: 2880 × 2880 (x2) at 30fps. Stills resolution: 15MP

  • Price: Ranges from about 6- $800

Cheap 360 Cameras

15. Madv Mini

Madv Mini Review

The Madv Mini is a smartphone 360 camera. It’s great for anyone looking to take solid 360 footage on-the-go without breaking the bank. It transfers video and photos straight to your phone for a seamless workflow. It has lower resolution comparatively to its competitors, but it’s also in a completely different price bracket.

  • Small and compact. Max video resolution: 1920 x 960 at 30fps. Still res: 14 MP
  • Cons: Only available for Android.

Best 360 Video Cameras

14. Ricoh Theta Z1

Ricoh Theta Z1 review

Theta gives us another awesome option but now for the intermediate action or professional photographer. It’s quickly becoming the go-to for businesses who use virtual tours, and in the video above, you can see why, what the camera can capture. It yields very realistic spherical 4K video, and is equipped with four microphones, which can record sound from four different directions.

  • Resolution: 4K. Accurate image stitching. High quality 4K live streaming. Video res: 3840 x 1920, 29.97fps. Still res: 23MP
  • Cons: Pricey
  • Price: $999

360 Video Camera

13. Aleta S2C

Aleta S2C Review

Aleta S2C is a 360 degree camera that is exclusively designed for super high resolution 360 photos. It’s especially useful for real estate, interior design, or commercial type photography.  It has 66 megapixels , and can capture a 7 shot exposure bracket with identical stitching.

  • 12K ultra high resolution. 66 MP. Easy to use app.
  • Cons: No battery included, poor white balance
  • Price: $1,210

12. 360Rize Penguin

Side by side footage of the Penguin against the Insta One X

This camera is a lot of fun. Make sure to watch the video above to see the differences between this extremely affordable 360 camera and one of the best cameras on the market - the Insta360 One X. The Penguin shoots 4k video at 30fps, but it can shoot up to 6K at 12fps, which is awesome. It doesn’t measure up to the stability of the One X, but it’s also almost half the price. The Penguin has one of the best overall values. It also has incredible live streaming capabilities.

  • 4K video at 30 fps, 6K at 12fps. Live-streaming up to 7.5 hours. Small and compact. Weighs: 74g. WiFi.
  • Cons: No stabilization
  • Price: $99 (from about $200)

360 Camera Review

11. Xphase Pro S

Trying out the Xphase Pro S

This camera can only take pictures. As of the summer of 2019, The Xphase Pro S is the highest resolution 360 camera. It has 25 sensors, each with 8 megapixels, for a total resolution of 200 megapixels.

  • Stills:  200 MP. Weighs: 248g. Removable USB drive.
  • Cons: Very expensive, doesn’t support Mac Software as of now, some issues with glare, not waterproof, stitching isn’t perfect
  • Price: $879

10. Yi 360 VR

Yi 360 VR Review

Semi-pro 360 camera that has great value for not only price but video quality. At 5.7K resolution, it yields some of the best footage ever seen.  It’s not nearly as sleep as its competitors, but at its core, is a solid choice. If you’re looking to shoot more outdoors, be careful as it’s not weather resistant. It also has a tendency to overheat. The 5.7K video must be stitched on desktop software, which is a bit of a letdown. It’s also a fairly limiting software. But again, the camera itself, is pretty incredible.

  • 5.7K resolution. 4K live streaming capabilities. Weighs: 187g. Battery life at 50 minutes. Max. video resolution: 5760 x 2880 at 30fps. Stills resolution: 16MP
  • Cons: Not waterproof, can overheat, no internal stitching for 5.7K video -desktop software only with limited software capabilities
  • Price: Originally $399 now $159

Cheap 360 Camera

9. Samsung Gear 360 (2017)

Samsung Gear review with added tips and tricks

The Samsung Gear actually comes from 2017, but it’s a 360 camera that belongs as much as everything else! It has made huge improvements from the 2016 version.  It’s one of the best cameras to use pair with your phone, because the app and camera are just so easy to use. Shoot, view, and share in just a few seconds. With built-in internal stitching, you can go live whenever you’re feeling up for letting the world in. It has an easy-to-grip camera body, and you’ll want to take it everywhere you go. It has an external microSD card that can hold up to 256GB of storage. While some action adventurers may often lean towards GoPro, if you’re a beginner or beginner enthusiast, it’s 4K video is perfect for the price point.

  • 4K video. User-friendly with easy to use app. Weight: 130 g. 130 minute battery life. Built-in stitching. Max. video resolution: 4096 x 2048 at 24fps. Single lens resolution: 1920 x 1080 at 60fps. Stills resolution: 15MP (made up two 8.4 MP sensors)
  • Cons: Can’t go live if using an iPhone
  • Price: $235

360 Camera Buying Guide

8. Pilot Era 360 Camera

See how the Pilot does in low light settings

Made by an unknown company, Pisofttech, the Pilot Era is a debatable purchase. It’s a VR camera that can record videos and photos up to 8K, can livestream in 4K without a computer, and can even stitch together footage without any extra software. All of which, is pretty incredible. It’s rectangular body allows for four fish-eye cameras, with gyroscope stabilization, but the lenses are low quality. In fact, for the price point especially, the lenses really need an upgrade, and the results just pale in comparison to its competitors. There is a screen on the camera itself, which is nice, but another common downside discussed by users is its perpetual glitchiness.

  • Resolution: 8K Weighs:  High-def touch screen, 4G WiFi, 3.5 hours of battery life. 512 GB internal storage space. Android-based software. 8K video in-camera stitching: 7680 x 3840 at 24fps. Real-time photo stitching: 8192 x 4096. Standalone live-streaming: 3840 x 1920 at 30fps
  • Cons: Low quality lenses, glitchy, super small font on screen, expensive for capabilities
  • Price: $2799 new from site

7. Ricoh Theta V

Videographer Ben Claremont reviews the new Ricoh

Quite the upgrade from the Ricoh Theta S , (which I didn’t add to this list) several years earlier, this 360 camera can now capture 4K video, 4K live streaming, and even spatial audio with its four microphone system. It’s Android-based, with WiFi, bluetooth, and competitive battery life compared to other 360 video cameras.

  • Resolution: 4K. Weighs: 121g. Bluetooth, wifi, x4 microphones, increased ISO. Max. video resolution: 3840 × 1920 at 30fps. Stills resolution: 14MP
  • Cons: no replaceable SD card or battery, only records 19 GB, can only record for about a half hour without charge, lens flare
  • Price: $379.99

6. GoPro Max

Roller coaster GoPro Max footage

If you liked the sound of the GoPro Fusion, meet the sleeker version of it. You can shoot in 5.6K at 30fps (bumping up the frame rate from the Fusion), now equipped with livestream capabilities. It’s waterproof now up to 16 feet, with all of the dressings as before. It has GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, a gyroscope, and six microphones. The LCD screen allows you to view your footage instantly, unlike the Fusion. The Fusion also needed two SD cards to work, whereas the Max requires only one, making it less of a hassle to use, and slightly cheaper.

  • Resolution: 5.6K. Front-facing screen, livestream, mountable, waterproof, GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, wifi, bluetooth, 3D audio, automatic stitching, advanced app editing features. Stills resolution: 16.6MP
  • Cons: Dropped resolution from 18 to 16
  • Price: $499

Buying Guide to 360 Video Cameras

5. GoPro Fusion

Into the mountains with the GoPro Fusion

GoPro has redefined adventure photography and videography. Capturing 360 video in 5.2K resolution at 30fps upon its original release, it’s since upgraded to 5.6K in 24 fps. It also offers something called OverCapture. OverCapture is an editing feature that allows you to take 360 video and crop it and watch it in traditional fixed-frame video. It creates standard 16:9 from your footage. The Fusion is equipped with GPS, 4 microphones, accelerometer, gyroscope, WiFi, and much more. This came out first, before the GoPro Max, which we’ll take a look at next.

  • Original Resolution: 5.2K. With update: 5.6K at 24fps. Weighs: 226g. Battery life at 70 minutes. Mountable, waterproof up to 10ft, GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, wifi, bluetooth, 3D audio. Max video resolution: 5228 x 2624 at 30fps. Stills resolution: 18MP
  • Cons: Large, clunky
  • Price: $245

Buying Guide for 360 Cameras

4. HumanEyes Vuze XR

See through these HumanEyes

Similar to the Insta360 EVO, the Vuze is able to record both 360 video and 3D VR videos. It has pop-out lenses and shoots video at 5.7K. It’s a really solid camera with competitive image quality, but the biggest downside is its app’s editing capabilities. You can get some great footage, but it’s hard to do anything with it.

  • Resolution:  5.7K. Weighs: 212g. Battery life at 60 minutes. User-friendly design. Max video resolution: 5760 x 2880 at 30fps. Stills resolution: 18MP
  • Cons: App editing features needs an upgrade
  • Price: $349

3. Insta360 One

Review on the Insta360 One

If you’re into experimental videography, the Insta360 One has some really fun video modes that can help you stand out. If you’ve ever seen The Matrix, the iconic “bullet time” effect is available. The camera offers this fast frame-rate, slow-mo setting, that has you wave the camera around you on a piece of string. But of course, this video camera can handle standard 360 video and 4K video quality is excellent. It also features something called FreeCapture, which functions the same as OverCapture in the GoPro Fusion, bringing 360 footage into standard 16:9 for regular viewing.

  • Attaches easily to iPhone. Extra video modes including Bullet Time and FreeCapture. Weight: 83g. 70 minute battery life. Live-streaming, bluetooth. Max. video resolution: 3840 x 1920 at 30fps. Stills resolution: 24MP
  • Cons: Shutter is easily accidently hit, shutter lag sometimes alters photos
  • Price: $299

VR and 360 Cameras

2. Insta360 Evo

EVO footage and a full review

The great thing about the EVO is that it can function as more than a standard 360 degree camera. While it has back-to-back fisheye lenses, it also has a hinge design, which allows for the lenses to sit next to each other. This allows them to shoot 3D VR content with a 180 degree field of view. It’s pretty great, though it’s not nearly as pocket-size as the Insta360, and you do need a solid VR headset to experience the perks of capturing the 3D content. The battery life, like the 360, could be better.

  • Resolution: 5.7K Weighs: 113g, back-to-back fisheye lenses with hinge can capture 3D VR content. 65 minute of battery life. Max video resolution : 5760 x 2880 at 30fps Stills resolution: 18MP
  • Cons: Need VR headset to experience extra features

Best 360 Video Camera

1. Insta360 One X

See what our top pick can do

Based on price, resolution, and overall video quality, the Insta360 One X is the best 360 camera available right now. It has the highest resolution possible for this price range at 5.7K, and it’s smooth image stabilization system, makes it one of the most full-featured cameras on the map. It has dual fisheye lenses and some unique time-shift settings only amplified by it’s incredible app editing software.

  • Resolution: 5.7K Weighs: 115g. Has a removable battery, wifi, bluetooth, app with advanced editing features, on-camera display. Battery life at 60 minutes Max video res 5760 x 2880 at 30fps, Stills res at 18MP
  • Price: $339

The 1-inch edition of the ONE R features a larger 1-inch sensor than the standard edition, which allows it to capture higher quality images and videos. Additionally, it also has built-in image stabilization and can shoot 5.3K 360-degree video.

The Insta360 ONE X3 is another latest camera from Insta360 that is worth considering for virtual tours. This camera can shoot 5.7K video and has a built-in image stabilization. It also has advanced features such as manual controls, a high dynamic range (HDR) mode, and a live streaming function. Additionally, it comes with an innovative new feature called “CrystalView” which allows you to view the video in 8K resolution on a compatible device.

The Ricoh Theta Z1 is another high-resolution option that is well-suited for creating virtual tours. Additionally, the Samsung Gear 360 is equipped with a variety of advanced features such as manual controls, a high dynamic range (HDR) mode, and a live streaming function.

In summary, the Insta360 Pro 2 X, Insta360 ONE R 1-inch edition, Insta360 ONE X3, The Ricoh Theta Z1, GoPro Fusion, and Samsung Gear 360 are all excellent options that offer a variety of features and specifications. Carefully consider your specific needs and budget before making a decision and you are sure to end up with a camera that will help you create stunning virtual tours.

It’s worth mentioning that when creating virtual tours, the camera is just one piece of the puzzle. Post-processing software, lighting, and audio all play a crucial role in the final outcome. It’s essential to invest in good post-processing software, and learn how to use it, to take your virtual tours to the next level.

In addition, it’s also important to consider the hardware requirements for viewing the virtual tours. Not all devices are capable of displaying 8K or 5.7K resolution videos, so it’s essential to consider the target audience and their device capability before deciding on the camera resolution.

To sum up, the best 360 camera for virtual tours in 2023 is the one that meets your specific needs and budget. The Insta360 Pro 2 X, Insta360 ONE R 1-inch edition, Insta360 ONE X3, The Ricoh Theta Z1, GoPro Fusion, and Samsung Gear 360 are all excellent options that offer a variety of features and specifications. It’s essential to consider all aspects of the virtual tour creation process, including post-processing software, lighting, audio, and target audience, before making a decision on which camera to use.

Which 360 Camera is Best for Real Estate Virtual Tours (2023)?

The 360 Guy

If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a 360 photo is the whole book. There is no better way to visualise the internal area of any real estate than with an interactive 360 photo, and now it’s possible for anyone to shoot super-high quality 360 photos for real estate. Virtual tours are becoming an increasingly popular tool for realtors to show off their most impressive listings, but how easy is it to create these VR tours and what camera should you use?

There are now dozens of all-in-one 360 cameras that make shooting 360 photo and video extremely simple, but if you’re not familiar with the product category you may find it hard to choose the right one. Thankfully I’ve used an tested pretty much all 360 cameras and I can tell you now that you only need to choose between two.

The 360 Cameras Most Suitable for Real Estate Virtual Tours (Updated April 2023):

Best Quality: Insta360 1 Inch 360-Edition

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Sharpest  Images: Ricoh Theta X

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

1/2 Inch Sensors | 60MP Photos | HDR auto Bracketing | Easy to Use

Cheaper Option: Trisio Lite 2

best vr tour camera 2022

Why these cameras you ask? They each have specific features that make them excellent for taking photos and a few others that make creating virtual tours easier too. Most other 360 cameras focus heavily on video , which is great, but not really important when creating virtual tours for real estate.

In this post you’ll see example images shot with a variety of cameras; this will allow you to see the quality you can expect from them. You can also improve photo quality if you are proficient at editing.

At the end of this post you’ll see an example shot with a DSLR 360 panorama rig. DSLR panoramic rigs were traditionally how 360 photos were created prior to the all-in-one devices. These rigs are quite expensive, require a lot of shooting and editing time and need specialist software, however the quality is excellent if you get it right.

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Can the all-in-one cameras like the Insta360 1 Inch 360 Edition match up to the DSRL panoramic rig in terms of quality? Probably not, but creating a virtual tour with one takes far, far less time and is do-able for anyone who knows how to work a smartphone. Let’s have a look at those comparisons between the different systems, their positives, negatives and total cost.

Insta360 1 Inch 360 Edition

Insta360 One RS 1 Inch 360 Edition review

Difficult: Medium

Price : $$$$

Time for Each Panorama: 15 Mins

Equipment Required: Camera, Tripod

Software Required: Adobe Lightroom, Insta360 Studio

Example 360 Photo:

Analysis

The Insta360 1 Inch 360 Edition is only the second all-in-one 360 camera to feature dual 1-Inch sensors, which make it far more suited to photography than other 360 cameras. Not only this, but the Insta360 can shoot DNG RAW images, features an AI photo enhancer and a workflow that’s reasonably simple to pick up.

The 1 Inch 360 Edition can shoot higher resolution 360 images than it’s closest competitor and features a touch screen for easy manual control. This is a very easy to use camera and anyone who has a modern phone should be able to master all its functions.

To get the absolute best quality out of this camera you will need to shoot in the DNG RAW mode with HDR also activated. This will allow you to edit your images in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to massively improve dynamic range, colour, contrast and noise.

But if you are not keen on subscribing to those apps, then the Free Insta360 Studio is able to automatically apply these improvements with the Pureshot feature, however you won’t be able to adjust any individual settings.

The image quality is second to none with the Insta360 1-Inch Edition and is pretty much the best you are going to get out of an all-in-one 360 camera right now.

  • High Quality 360 Photos
  • Easy to Use
  • Pureshot Mode
  • One Inch Sensors
  • Free Software
  • High Quality Video
  • Can Overheat

What about the Ricoh Theta Z1

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Equipment Required: Ricoh Theta Z1 Camera, Tripod

Software Required: Adobe Lightroom

The Ricoh Theta Z1 was for a long time the perfect all in one 360 camera for shooting virtual tours. It also features two 1 inch sensors and can shoot RAW DNG allowing for greater editing potential, Ricoh have even developed a plugin for Lightroom to allow you to stitch and edit in one program. You also also have the option of automatic HDR which requires even less editing but still produces great results.

However compared to the Insta360 1 Inch 360 Edition the Theta Z1 has a poor design with no Micro-SD Card slot, no touch screen and lower resolution images.

It’s certainly true that the Theta Z1 is powerful enough to be used to create very high quality virtual tours, and the results rival that of some DSLR’s. But the camera is fairly old now and you still have to pay a premium price. I’m still including it in this line-up as some people may prefer Ricoh products and I want to be clear that it’s still a decent option.

  • Auto HDR Mode
  • One Inch Sensors Superior
  • Lighroom Plugin
  • Lower Resolution than Competitors
  • No MicroSD Slot

Ricoh Theta X

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Difficult: Easy

Price : $$$

Time for Each Panorama: 2 Mins

Equipment Required: Ricoh Theta X Camera, Tripod

Software Required: None

The Theta X is literally designed to be the perfect workhorse virtual tour camera. It lacks the higher quality sensors of the Z1 but adds so many user friendly options. The large touch screen, MicroSD slot and removable battery make this a very easy to use camera.

The Theta X can shoot very large 60MP images, the highest of any consumer 360 camera. Using the auto HDR mode results in great looking, sharp images that captures a lot of details. The smaller sensors means the images aren’t as attractive as the Z1 however the Theta X can capture more detail, which might be more important in some situations.

The Theta X has been marketed as a high quality virtual tour camera that’s as east to use as your iPhone and for the most part it achieves this.

  • Highest Resolution Images
  • Very User Friendly
  • No Software Required
  • Lots of Memory
  • Smaller Sensor Size

Trisio Lite 2

best vr tour camera 2022

Time for Each Panorama: 4 Mins

Equipment Required: Trisio Lite 2, Tripod

Software Required: Trisio App

Example 360 Photos

The Trisio Lite 2 camera is slightly different than the other camera on this list. The camera features just one lens compared to others that include two. The Trisio works by turning on its axis, shooting images as it goes along and then stitching them together automatically.

This ingenious design allows the camera to be cheaper than its competitors while retaining high quality images. The max resolution is 32MP which is enough to capture plenty of details, there is also an auto HDR mode which boosts the dynamic range of your images.

On the downside there is no option for shooting video and very limited photo options too. You won’t have much control over how your images look.

  • High Resolution Images
  • Cheaper Option
  • No Video Mode
  • Limited Options

The above options are probably the three to choose from as of 2022. Depending on your budget and why you need to shoot Virtual Tours you could happily use either of these three. For high quality VR tours for larger houses then the Z1 is still the best.

For other professions, like the construction industry for example, or real estate for smaller units, the Theta X is the best option and it’s by far the easiest to use. The budget option is the Tiriso Lite.

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Other Options

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Time for Each Panorama: 5 Mins

Equipment Required: QooCam 8K, Tripod

Software Required: QooCam Studio, Kandao Raw +, Photoshop/Lightroom

The QooCam 8K is the first consumer 360 camera that can shoot 8K resolution video. While this is impressive it doesn’t help those who want to create virtual tours with 360 photos. Thankfully the QooCam is also a bit of a powerhouse when it comes to shooting photos.

The QooCam 8K can shoot DNG 8 photos with excellent results. This mode stacks 8 DNG photos together to create very high dynamic range images that look great in virtually all types of lighting. This mode will allow you to capture more detail than ever and avoid over exposed light areas.

Working with these file types can be a bit tricky and you’ll need to download a special desktop program to combine all the images together. You may also need a program like Photoshop of Lightroom for the finishing touches, but within a few minutes your 360 images should be ready for uploading to a virtual tour.

The QooCam features larger sensors than most consumer 360 cameras which allows it to capture more detail and avoid blurred images. Compared to the Theta Z1 the QooCam doesn’t match up in terms of hardware but it does have more shooting options and an easier workflow.

Xiaomi Mijia Mi Sphere

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Equipment Required: Xiaomi Mijia Mi Sphere Camera, Tripod

Analysis:

The Xiaomi Mijia Mi Sphere is a fairly cheap 360 camera that can shoot impressive 24 megapixel images. The camera has been widely praised for its photo taking abilities which is why it’s one of the two options for shooting real estate virtual tours. The Mi Sphere shoots 360 photos with just the tap of a button and no manual stitching is required.

The above photo was created using three separate images, shot with the bracketing mode feature on the camera. This mode forces the Mi Sphere to shoot a dark, normal and bright image, you then combine them to create an overall superior quality panorama. Unfortunately the camera itself can’t combine the images together, so you’ll need to do this manually with a program like lightroom.

The quality of the image is a downgrade from the DSLR rig and there is some blurriness in the background, but overall it does a decent job and someone who is a better editor than me could easily make this a much more dynamic image, but again this is more editing time.  For just over $200 the Mi Sphere is certainly the most cost effective way to create indoor virtual tours.

  • Bracketing Option
  • High Resolution Image
  • Some Blurriness
  • Less Dynamic
  • Merging of Photos Needs External Software

DSLR Panorama Rig

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

Difficult: Hard

Price : $$$$$

Time for Each Panorama: 30 mins +

Equipment Required: DSLR, Wide Angel Lens, Tripod, Panoramic Tripod Head

Software Required: Adobe Lightroom, Stitching Program (PTGui)

The quality of the image is undoubted, not to mention the brightness and colour accuracy. DLSR rigs allow you to create such high quality panoramas because the lenses are very good at capturing light and detail. You are also taking 8-10 separate photos and manually stitching them into a single one, which means there is no loss of quality.

Some drawbacks to this, apart from the large amount of time it takes, is that there can be stitching errors visible in the image. You can spot a few here if you look carefully, for example at the bottom of the door. These errors are caused when you haven’t quite lined up two images properly, most of the time they can be fixed but require you to spend more time in editing. If you have a lot of photos to take in your tour, you could find yourself spending hours editing and stitching images together.

To achieve this you’ll need to invest in some software packages, particularly a stitching program such as PTGui. This along with the price of the equipment makes this an expensive as well as time consuming way to shoot real estate virtual tours, but certainly produces the best results. For this shot I used a Samyang Fish Eye Lens , which is actually one of the cheaper fish eye lenses suitable for 360 photography.

  • Highest Quality Image
  • Not Overexposed or blurred
  • Time Intensive
  • Requires Skill to Get Right
  • Tripod More Visible
  • No Video Option

So which 360 camera is the best for real estate virtual tours? It depends what you want to achieve. If you need to absolute best quality then you’ll still need to use a DLSR rig. If you can sacrifice a bit of quality, then the Ricoh Theta V is an excellent option that will save you a huge amount of time. If cost is an issue then the Mi Sphere will do a decent job for a very low price.

If I had to choose, I’d pick the Ricoh Theta V as an excellent compromise between quality, time taken and price. You can get the Theta V from Amazon for around $429 and it can also shoot 4K 360 video.

No matter which camera you choose, the investment will be worth it. I’ve had countless enquiries from real estate agents asking about 360 photo, video and virtual tours and I think it’s going to become a standard part of the industry within the next few years.

I’m looking at the Matterport samples. They allow you to travel/surf through a building or apartment to view the entire building instead of just doing a 360 view. Are the cameras you review on this post able to do the same thing? If so is it a lot more work than if I just purchased a Matterport?

Embracing Change: The Evolution of Real Estate with 360 Photography

The realm of real estate has been undergoing rapid and transformative changes, particularly catalyzed by the global pandemic that forced people to spend more time indoors. This shift necessitated a new way of living and even shopping for homes. For those seeking to relocate, the process seemed daunting, as traditional static photos often fell short of providing a comprehensive view. However, the emergence of 360 photography within the real estate industry revolutionized the home-buying experience by introducing immersive and interactive virtual tours. This innovative approach, characterized by high-quality visuals and engaging virtual tours, not only instills buyer confidence but also significantly enhances the visibility of properties listed for sale. In this article, we'll explore the world of 360 photography, delve into the best camera equipment for creating mesmerizing 360 spin photography, and discuss factors to consider when selecting the right camera for your needs.

best 360 camera for virtual tours 2023

The Power of 360 Photography

Gone are the days of flat, static photos dominating real estate listings. With the advent of 360 photography, prospective buyers can now explore properties in unprecedented detail and interactivity. These immersive tours offer a holistic understanding of a property's layout, design, and overall ambiance. This dynamic approach to showcasing real estate not only captivates potential buyers but also draws a larger online audience to listings. While enlisting a professional photographer to capture these shots can be beneficial, achieving professional-level quality is more accessible than ever, thanks to a wide array of camera equipment options tailored for 360 photography.

Finding the Perfect Camera

Selecting the right camera for 360 photography is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Several crucial factors should guide your decision-making process, including your budget, desired quality, and intended use. Contrary to popular belief, the most expensive camera isn't always the best choice; rather, it's about finding the camera that aligns with your unique needs and budget.

Budget Considerations : When determining your camera budget, remember that a higher price tag doesn't always equate to superior performance. For many, the smartphone in their pocket already boasts a camera capable of professional results. Taking the time to learn how to harness your smartphone's camera features can yield exceptional outcomes without requiring an additional photography budget.

Quality and Clarity : Megapixels are a significant determinant of image quality. While a higher megapixel count often correlates with better image clarity, this doesn't mean you need the maximum megapixels available. Many budget-friendly cameras can produce high-quality photos without the need for excessive pixel count. Investing in the right camera features, such as lens quality and sensor technology, can be more impactful than focusing solely on megapixels.

Battery Life : Ensuring your camera has a reliable and long-lasting battery is crucial, especially when capturing multiple properties in a single day. Battery life can vary significantly among cameras, ranging from as little as one hour to three hours or more. Consider how often you'll need to recharge during your typical workday to make an informed decision.

7 Best Real Estate 360 Cameras In 2023

If you’re a real estate professional in 2023, you’ve likely seen how popular virtual tours have become. To make one, you’ll need a real estate 360 camera.

Choosing the Right 360-Degree Camera

360-degree cameras are relatively new. Because of this, they have very different specifications. When choosing 360-degree cameras, you may get confused because they’re all very different. Here are a few aspects you might want to look for.

Software . Some 360 cameras come with software solutions, while others rely on professional software like Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, etc… If you’ve never done video or photo editing before, you may want a camera with its software solution.

  • Resolution . Capturing 3D imagery is hard. To compensate, some cameras don’t have very high resolution. But if you’re capturing real estate photos, you know that quality is everything. Look for a camera that has at least 14 megapixels and HDR.
  • Video features . Not only may you want a 360-degree tour, but you might want the ability to port it into a virtual reality headset or share it online through social media. Some cameras have live streaming functionality, making building a social media following easier.
  • Battery life . Depending on how many listings you usually work with, battery life may or may not be important. 360 cameras have relatively limited battery life, lasting less than an hour. But some, such as the Samsung Gear, have a battery life of up to a few hours.

A basic 360-degree camera should be good enough to produce photographs and videos for professional, polished real estate listings. Many 360-degree cameras are built around snowboarding, skiing, mountain climbing, and other outdoor activities — which means they’re very good at capturing high-quality 360-degree imagery quickly.

FAQs On Real Estate 360 Camera

What accessories do you need to capture a 3d tour.

For real estate photography, you should usually have a tripod and a remote “clicker” to take photos while out of the room. When you purchase the kit, a 360-degree camera usually comes with at least these peripherals.

How is a 3D virtual tour made?

A 360 camera captures multiple images. From there, those images must be composed into a 3D virtual tour using a software platform. A virtual tour camera will come with basic software, but you may need to learn a solution like Lightroom to perform more advanced editing.

Are 3D virtual reality tours necessary?

3D tours and virtual reality tours are imminently shareable on social media. They are an excellent way for real estate professionals to build a following and interest — and they’re also a good way to sell properties when people can’t otherwise view them in real life. Hey Maurice! I’ve not personally used the Matterport Axis although I’ve heard good things about it. I do think Matterport has led the real estate specific 360 space for many years now and their software is top of the line to pair with your capture device (in this case your smartphone). For $79 I would give it a shot and see how it performs. I bet you’d be happy with the results.
