Visiting Thailand by car is not very common and yet it’s for sure the best way to discover the country’s must-see attractions.

In order to help you plan your stay , I have prepared this guide with the 5 best road trips itineraries in Thailand depending on the duration of your stay (7 to 30 days).

For each duration, I will give you a summary of the itinerary as well as the link to read the detailed itinerary article I have written.

And at the end of this guide, I will also give you my list of the best accommodations in Thailand depending on your budget as well as my best tips to enjoy the perfect road trip.

What’s the best airport to start a road-trip in Thailand?

Thailand has several international and national airports. The best serviced are at:

• Bangkok , the capital. There are 2 airports: Suvarnabhumi airport (where all international flights arrive) and Don Mueang airport for domestic flights or border countries such as Cambodia or Vietnam.
• Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand
• Chiang Rai , also in the North
• Phuket , for the South and to visit the islands
• Krabi , also in the South

For each of these itineraries in Thailand, whether for a week or 1 month, I’ve chosen arrival at Bangkok . Simply because it is the most convenient place to start driving through Thailand, going further north gradually.

If you are planning a road trip in Thailand, you will have to rent a car.

I always recommend booking a car from the airport because there you will have the greatest choice of international or national rental agencies and can therefore get the best prices.

A small specific detail about road trips in Thailand: you must rent a car car from Don Mueang airport and not from Suvarnabhumi airport, where you arrive. It is much more convenient to get your car back to Don Mueang when leaving Bangkok as this airport is directly on the way to the next stop.

You must also book your car in advance so that you have a choice of vehicle and prices that are much lower than those you get on the spot.

On this 1 week road trip in Thailand: Bangkok , Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai.

Day 1 and 2 – Exploring Bangkok:

Day 3 – Visit to the Ayutthaya historical park and its ancient temples, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Days four, five, and six – Exploring the capital of Northern Thailand: Chiang Mai.

• The old town and its many temples

Day 7: The end of your trip, head to Chiang Mai Airport for your return flight.

Thailand Road trip: 10 days

Second idea for a road trip, this time to visit Thailand by car in 10 days.

For this itinerary, you will leave from Bangkok and finish your stay in the South.

On the agenda for this 10-day road trip in Thailand:

• Phuket or Krabi (choice)

You must start this 10-day road trip in Thailand with the capital, Bangkok . In addition to the day you arrive, you should stay there for 2 days to recover from the flight and jet lag.

Day one: Here’s an idea for your first day in Bangkok:

• Siam Museum or Bangkok National Museum
• Dinner cruise on the river

For the second day , continue your visit with Wat Saket, Chinatown and a walk in the Lumpini park. Then go shopping in the Siam district.

At the end of the day, don’t miss the Bayoke tower (Bangkok’s tallest tower) to admire a view of the city. Tickets can be booked here.

The next day (day three) , for the rest of this 10-day road trip in Thailand, visit the historical park of Ayutthaya.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has several magnificent temples that you can see during the day.

Days four, five, and six shall be devoted to visiting Chiang Mai, the capital of northern Thailand.

The unmissable spots:

• The old town of Chiang Mai where all the temples are located: Wat Phra Sing , Wat Chedi Luang or Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang
• Warorot market, the city’s largest market
• The night market and/or the Saturday or Sunday evening market to buy souvenirs and taste street food
• The Doi Suthep National Park, where the temple of the same name is located, offers a panoramic view of the whole province
• Visit the elephants in a shelter
• Take a cooking class to make delicious Pad Thai and currys.

Finish this 10-day road trip to Thailand by visiting the South, where you can enjoy the country’s most beautiful beaches.

From Chiang Mai, it is very easy to reach Phuket or Krabi in less than 2 hours.

For days seven, eight, and nine of your itinerary, you can choose between spending 3 days on Phuket Island or in Krabi province.

On the day ten , it will be time to take your return flight from Phuket or Krabi airport.

Thailand Road trip: two weeks

If you go on a road trip in Thailand for 15 days , you will be able to divide your time between the central/northern part of the country and the south.

This 2-week road trip in Thailand I am suggesting also starts from Bangkok.

I’ll summarise the legs of the journey below:

For this two-week road trip in Thailand, we will start by visiting Bangkok for 2 days.

You’ll have time to see many of the places we discuss in our Top 20 places to visit in Bangkok.

Days 1 and 2 – Things to do:

• Bangkok National Museum
• A river cruise
• Bayoke Tower
• Chinatown and Wat Traimit
• The Siam neighbourhood with huge shopping centres

On day three of your 15-day road trip in Thailand, visit Ayutthaya , the ancient capital of the kingdom of Siam.

These ancient temples are now classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Day Four: keep one day for travelling the 350 km from Ayutthaya to Sukhothai .

Day five – Visit the historical park of Sukhothai.

Like Ayutthaya, Sukhothai was one of the capital cities of the kingdom of Siam and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day seven of your 15-day road trip in Thailand: Travel from Sukhothai and Chiang Mai , 300 km away.

On day eight, you must visit Chiang Mai Old Town. You should absolutely see all the temples there, including Wat Phra Sing and Wat Chedi Luang . At the end of the day, head for the Night Bazaar to eat at one of the many stands or buy some souvenirs.

Day nine – You have several options to finish exploring the city and its surroundings:

• Explore Doi Suthep National Park, home to a temple, Bhubing Palace (the royal family’s winter residence), a Hmong village and several waterfalls.
• Spend a day with the elephants at a shelter to help the caretakers feed or wash them.
• Take a traditional cooking class, a typical activity to do in Thailand!

Visiting Thailand in 15 days also allows you to devote part of your stay to the South of the country.

From Chiang Mai, you must choose between Phuket and Krabi for the rest of your 2 week road trip in Thailand. To get there, you just have to catch a plane.

On days nine, ten, and eleven , you will have plenty of time to travel around Phuket Island or Krabi province.

After Phuket or Krabi , you can continue your road trip in Thailand with another Southern Island.

For days twelve, thirteen, and fourteen, you must choose between staying for 3 days at:

• Koh Lanta to enjoy the beaches and go on beautiful trips around the 4 islands or Koh Rok .
• Koh Yao Noi experience the authenticity of Thailand on an island which is still free of mass tourism.

You know that now we are on day fifteen , and that means we are at end of your holiday.

For the return trip, you can catch your plane in Phuket or Krabi.

Thailand Road trip: 3 weeks

For a 3 week road trip in Thailand , you can divide your holiday into 3 main parts:

• Central Thailand with Bangkok and Ayutthaya
• The North , to discover Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
• The South , and its heavenly islands: Phuket , Koh Lanta , Koh Yao , Krabi .

To give you an idea, I’ll give you a summary of the planned visits during these 3 weeks:

Start your 21-day road trip in Thailand by exploring the central part of the country for the first 3 days. This allows you to start slowly, recovering from jet lag and getting used to the climate.

Days 1 and 2 : Bangkok

Day 3 : Ayutthaya

Continue your three-week road trip in Thailand by heading north.

Days 4 and 5 – Visit to Sukhothai Historical Park

Days 6, 7 and 8 – Explore Chiang Mai and its many temples

Days 9, 10 and 11 – Explore Chiang Rai and its surroundings, with the unmissable white temple, THE spot to see during a 3 week road trip in Thailand!

After these 11 days in the centre and North, it’s time to continue your 20-21 day road trip in Thailand by heading South.

Days 12, 13 and 14 – Stay at Phuket , one of the most famous islands of the Andaman Sea. Not only will you explore this island, but you’ll also take boat trips to Koh Phi Phi or the Similan Islands.

Days 15, 16 and 17 – Take a boat to Koh Lanta . The island has very beautiful sandy beaches and turquoise waters. And be sure you go on one of these trips, with snorkelling and swimming stops, to the 4 islands or Koh Rok.

Days 18, 19 and 20 – For the last 3 days, you can choose between 2 places to end your holiday:

• Krabi and Ao Nang
• Koh Yao Noi

In both cases, the schedule is not too busy: enjoy the beaches and work on your tan in relaxation mode.

Day 21 – End of your 3 week road trip in Thailand. If you are in Krabi, head for the city’s airport. If you are on Koh Yao Noi , you can choose to fly to Krabi or Phuket.

The last itinerary for the lucky few who can take a lot of time off: a month long road trip in Thailand!

For around thirty days, you can visit Bangkok and Ayutthaya in the centre but also much of the North with Sukhothai, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Not to forget the other major part of this 1-month road trip in Thailand, exploring the South and its piucturesque islands. I mentioned Phuket, Koh Lanta , Krabi and Koh Yao Noi.

Here is the summary of each leg of the journey to give you an overview:

For the first part of this month long road trip in Thailand, you must start with the central part of the country for 4 days.

Now you know how to organise your Thailand road trip, but there is another important point to address: accommodation.

Where to stay during each leg of your itinerary in Thailand?

Easy, I have prepared a selection of the best hotels to stay in Thailand, sorted by city and budget , for all the road trips I mentioned earlier.

For a road trip in Thailand , the best time is from November to February . These months are the “cold” season.

When I say “cold”, you should expect between 25 to 30° on average towards Bangkok or the South, and a little less towards the North, where temperatures can drop quickly, especially at night. Generally, the climate is hot and humid any month of the year.

The months of December and January are particularly popular among Europeans who come to Thailand to spend the holiday season and get away from the grey skies. If you are going to Thailand during this period, I strongly recommend that you book your accommodation as soon as possible as prices increase quickly.

If you want to avoid peak tourist season while enjoying the most favourable climate, I would say that February is the best month to visit Thailand by car.

Between March and May , it is the summer . If you can’t stand the heat, exploring the country can be challenging. Not to mention that the vegetation tends to dry out very quickly and the landscapes are less beautiful.

But if you like the heat and especially if you have a hotel with a swimming pool or on the seafront , you can still have a great holiday!

Between June and October, there’s the rainy season. It may rain every day on your road trip but good news it usually lasts only a few hours and not all day. However, it is difficult to withstand the combined heat with that much humidity. 

It is better to avoid the islands located on the west coast of the Andaman Sea (Phuket and Koh Lanta for example) which face heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding. Some islands can also be inaccessible as boat connections are cut off. 

Choose the islands on the East coast of the Andaman Sea that are less affected at that time, like Koh Samui.

However, on the other hand, it rains more in the East between September and December and at that time it will be better to plan a stay to the West of the Andaman Sea to visit the islands.

Vietnam – The Ha Giang Loop

“The Ha Giang Loop is an epic road trip that winds through the mountains in the remote regions of Northern Vietnam. This is a 375-kilometre loop trail that starts and finishes in the town of Ha Giang and is usually completed in 4 days on a motorbike. It’s getting harder and harder to discover unique and off-the-beaten path adventures but the Ha Giang Loop certainly ticks these boxes.  

Driving through this remote region feels like a step back in time. While there are some towns dotted along the way it is mainly remote villages and farmland with little to no infrastructure. This circuit winds through valleys and mountain peaks, some of which are right on the border with neighbouring China. You’ll enjoy stunning views over mountains (make sure you bring your camera ), enjoy driving the crazy roads, and interacting with the friendly locals. 

Some of the highlights of this trip include the viewpoints from Ma Pi Leng over the Nho Que River and from Heaven’s Gate (Quan Ba) and another great stop is Du Gia waterfall which is perfect for cliff jumping and is full of local kids who are having the time of their lives swimming and jumping from the rocks. This is a seriously amazing trip through the mountains and it will give you such a unique experience as you take in a part of Vietnam that very few travellers will make the effort to see.

Safe, affordable, and home to some of the region’s most dramatic landscapes and authentic cultural experiences, Oman is one of the best places in the world for a road trip. 

You can see a good chunk of the north-eastern part of the country in as little as 7-10 days. Add on a few extra days if you want to venture further to the Musandam Peninsula, dubbed the ‘Norway of the Middle East’ because of its fjords.

The perfect Oman road trip starts in the capital, Muscat, with a visit to the legendary Muttrah Souq and a thorough exploration of the city’s museums. As you head south along the coast towards Sur and Al Hadd, tracing the Gulf of Oman, stop off at the Bimmah Sink Hole and any one of the wadis that appear like oases in the desert. Nothing beats taking a dip in the cold water of a wadi after a long day of driving.

Inland, the Jebel Shams mountains await, with their sandcastle fortresses and mud hut villages. A night glamping in the Wahiba Sands Bedouin-style is a must, as is a trip to Nizwa for the fortress on your way back to the capital.

Oman has great highways and affordable fuel – plus wild camping is permitted anywhere. If you’re sticking to the major roads, a sedan will do you fine, but if you plan on off-roading or dune bashing then opt for a 4WD.

If you’re looking for a very underrated and incredibly stunning road trip to take, then rent a car and head out to beautiful Iran , where the architecture will amaze you, and the people will welcome you with open arms. 

Moreover, Iran is also an incredibly safe country to travel in, and you can easily rent a car at the airport (in either Tehran or Shiraz) and start your journey from there.

There is so much to see on a road trip to Iran, from the stunning mosques in Esfahan and Shiraz to the traditional houses in Kashan. Be sure to also stop by the desert town of Yazd, where you can learn about the Zoroastrianism culture and traditions. 

If you’re looking to explore Iran’s beautiful nature, be sure to visit the stunning Chahkooh Canyon on Qeshm Island. You can also stop by the majestic Rainbow Mountains in Hormuz Island, which is also home to a red beach. Another unmissable natural wonder is the Ali Sadr Cave, which you can paddle through. 

No trip to Iran would be complete if it didn’t involve tasting some of the delicious local food. Faloodeh is a very popular dessert made of frozen sugar syrup and rose water. You can find it in many places in Iran, but as it originated in Shiraz, be sure to try it there!

India – Darjeeling to Sandakphu, West Bengal

If the mountain is calling you, it is time to forget your mundane life and pack your backpacks. A road trip from Darjeeling to Sandakphu (The highest peak of the state of West Bengal – 11930 ft) can be a great idea as you can enjoy the most outstanding natural beauty while making the journey. 

It is the best road trip where the adventure starts from the Singalila National Park in Manebhanjan. The distance from Darjeeling to Manebhanjan is around 26 Km, and it takes almost 1.25 hrs to reach there surrounded by lush greenery and mountains. 

On this road trip, you can enjoy the density and serenity of the pine forest, the foggy roads with all their mysteries, and the gurgling stream that will continue the journey with you. The red pandas are a unique attraction in the forest.

From Manebhanjan, there are only two ways to reach Sandakphu. Either you can trek the entire trip, or you can hire a car. Trekking to Sandakphu is a good idea if you are a group of young people, but hiring a car is always the best option for a family trip. You will find the Land Rovers from Manebhanjan to make the journey. 

This road trip will include the hilly villages, like Tonglu, Gairibas, Tumling, Kalipokhri, Meghma, and Chitre. So take small stopovers over there, have some spectacular pictures, and then start the next part of your journey.

Once you reach Sandakphu and are lucky enough, you can get the shining view of ‘Sleeping Buddha’. When the sunlight falls upon the famous Kanchenjunga, you can enjoy the charming view of the spectacular Himalayan Mountain Range. 

Surrounded by pine forests, hilly streams, mountains, etc., spending your days in Sandakphu will always be in your memory, and this can be the best road trip of your life.

Are you looking for a completely unique and a little bit mysterious road trip that is enormously rich in history and culture? Then look no further and get a ticket to China.

As one of the largest countries in the world, China features stunning contrast and a diverse landscape. From beautiful gardens, large rivers, and misty mountains to desert, metropolises, and crazy traffic in just a few hours of distance. 

China offers an incredible blend of traditional and historical with modern architecture and skyscrapers. But it’s also the people and feelings that will make you fall in love with this country. 

To get the best of both worlds, you should start your road trip to China in Beijing, a great example of mixing the past and the present. Beijing is known for t he Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square,  t he Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall of China, and hutongs. The latter will make you remember China by interesting and sometimes unusual tastes of street food. 

From Beijing, you should continue to see the big apple Shanghai or dive even deeper into the history of China by visiting the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. Finish your trip with a glimpse of the Chinese inner landscape and nature. 

A great choice is to admire Li River cruising alongside magical karst peaks in Yangshuo and hiding from the world among rice terraces in Longsheng. 

Travelling through China is easy and safe. It will without a doubt leave you with incredible memories and a desire to come back and explore more.

Japan – Hokkaido Road Trip

An amazing road trip destination is Hokkaido, Japan’s most northern island. The scenery is absolutely stunning, with beautiful caldera lakes, cone-shaped volcanos, and endless forests.  

What’s more, driving here is an absolute delight as only 5% of the population of Japan lives on Hokkaido (while it’s over 20% of the total surface of the country). Roads are never busy and well-maintained. And with a well set up navigation system getting to your destination is easy.  

There are so many things to see and do on this amazing island, you could easily spend a month road tripping around Hokkaido without getting bored. Some of the highlights are: 

• Noboribetsu and Jigokudani (Hell Valley): an intriguing volcanic area with mud pools and steaming vents. Be sure to check out Oyunuma Pond, a mesmerizing steaming lake with a surface temperature of 50°. 
• Furano: a lovely little town in the heart of Hokkaido. Regardless of the season, there are always plenty of things to do in Furano. Engage in winter sports during winter or visit a winery during summer. Also, take a trip to the brightly colored and aptly named Blue Pools.  
• At Lake Akan, you can learn about the Ainu culture, the native people of Hokkaido. Lake Akan is also where you will find marimo , peculiar green spheres of algae, and very famous in Japan.

Japan – Tokyo to Beppu Road Trip

Japan is one of the most beautiful countries for a road trip. With the natural wonders of Mount Fuji and Beppu, the incredibly well-preserved castles, the endless hot springs and ryokans guarantee one of the most memorable road trips of your life.

But if you time it right, all of this is enhanced by the Sakura blooming in the spring. 

As the weather warms up, the cherry blossoms begin a brief but beautiful display. Usually this starts in the south and makes its way north through the country.

That’s why it helps to drive from north to south. Chances are you will run into them at some point on the way down.

But if you can’t time that, don’t worry. There are plenty of other things to see and do. 

Stay at a Ryokan for a couple of nights at the base of Mount Fuji. Usually shrouded in clouds, wait for them to clear to see one of the most recognizable mountains in the world. 

As you make your way down, you’ll stop into Kobe for some famous beef. You can visit carpentry museums and owl cafes. 

Stop into Bunny Island which, as the name implies, is an island entirely occupied by rabbits.

Take a ferry ride to Beppu and visit some of the most active geothermal pools on earth. Or take the gondola for a world-class view from the top.

8 Best Scenic Drives In Asia

Often times looking for the best scenic road trips in Asia is not the first thing to come to mind when you think of Asia. However, Asia actually has some of the most interesting and scenic drives anywhere in the world. One way to immerse yourself in the Asian culture is by exploring Asia by car. If you travel to any of these areas, bring your camera and try out one of these scenic drives. The roads listed below are considered some of the best drives in Asia.

1. The Karakoram Highway, Pakistan, and China

The Karakoram Highway is often referred to as the highest road in the world and sits a commanding 15,000ft above sea level. The road connects China and Pakistan and many people from all over the world travel this road for the chance to say they drove or rode on this highway.

The road has views of beautiful lakes and mountains that are stunning to view as well as experience in person. Because of the height that the road reaches, it’s important to be mindful of altitude sickness and how to deal with it if you become ill. Whether you travel in a car or on a motorbike, driving this road is truly spectacular.

2. The Hokkaido Scenic Byway, Japan

Hokkaido is considered by many to be the more beautiful of the four main islands that make up Japan . The Hokkaido Scenic Byway takes you past multiple routes that offer some amazing views. Often times the area has been compared to the French countryside or the Swiss Alps.

One key difference is the numerous natural hot springs that are abundant in the region. There are many hot spring spas that dot the routes. With stunning mountains and coastlines and an abundance of lavender fields, the Hokkaido Scenic Byway is a feast for the eyes and a picturesque wonderland.

3. The Mountain Tunnels of Guoliang and Xia Gou, China

From the city of Xinxiang, it’s fairly easy to reach the Mountain Tunnels of Guoliang and Xia Gou. Most roads in China are publicly funded, however, the country deemed it uneconomical to build roads in this region.

For this reason, the locals took road construction into their own hands by blasting roads and tunnels through the mountain. The tunnel roads offer an exceptional view of the surrounding mountain scenery. Taking a drive on this road is truly a remarkable experience.

4. Nha Trang to Quy Nhon, Vietnam

Getting from beach towns Nha Trang to Quy Nhon, Vietnam is certainly one of the most beautiful drives in the in all of Asia. A drive on this road will leave you sandwiched between golden beaches on one side and gorgeous mountain scenery on the other side.

The drive has numerous villages and town for you to stop by and explore during your 134-miles long drive. There is even a bi-annual event that takes place in the spring on odd-numbered years where visitors drive the route and celebrate. Driving this route which has plenty of scenic locations will be sure to leave you with a lot of great memories.

5. Leh-Manali Highway, India

There is nothing quite like taking a drive through the beautiful Himalayas. The Indian highway that connects the districts of Leh to Manali offers many amazing scenic views along the way. Often times people have referred to the route as a Buddhist pilgrimage of a sort.

Along the journey, you will pass the Chandra River, glaciers and beautiful mountains. You’ll also get to see a number of old statues of Buddha and other sacred sites along the highway. Your drive will bring you to Baralacha-La which is one of the Himalayas most beautiful landscapes. The area features lush meadows alongside snow-capped mountain peaks to create a beautifully picturesque drive.

6. Ilju Road, South Korea

If you plan on staying on the resort island of Jeju make sure to take a drive on the coastal road of Ilju. The South Korean island of Jeju is one of the many volcanic islands in the region. It features one of the best drives you can take while visiting in South Korea .

Along your drive on Ilju road, otherwise known as Road 12, you will have views of the coastline and beautiful beaches and hardened lava. The contrasting sides create a very unique looking landscape created by the volcano and its lava runoff. The difference in the landscapes helps to create really breath-taking pictures.

7. The Patapat Viaduct, Philippines

The Patapat Viaduct in the Philippines is a spectacular drive that you can take while in the area. Coming from the international airports in Manila or Clark, you can head to the northeast to Pagudpud on the Viaduct. Pagudpud is a popular destination and a hot spot for locals and traveling surfers.

Along this beautiful coastline, you will find beautiful lush green mountains and dense tropical forests that make up the landscape. You can also enjoy some amazing views of Pasaleng Bay. The best way to get around some of the tricky roads in this area is by hiring a guide if you aren’t familiar with the route.

8. The Bintulu-Miri Coastal Highway, Malaysia

In Malaysia taking the highway connecting Bintulu and Miri will offer you lots of amazing views of tropical rain forests. You will be able to catch a glimpse of the numerous homes on stilts that located in the area.

The road has a lot of photographic moments along its 143 miles. The road itself at certain places is not the best maintained. There is a newer road you can take however, it won’t offer the same level of beautiful scenery that this old road will. It may get rough in some parts but the drive is absolutely beautiful and well worth it.

Asia has lots of attractions including some truly amazingly scenic roads that you can drive. It’s not all the time that you think if taking a road trip through Asia, however, doing so will produce some really beautiful and breath-taking views. By taking any one of these roads mentioned, you are sure to to be rewarded to stunning views and extraordinary landscapes. Going on a road trip while in Asia will give you plenty of photo opportunities and loads of great memories.

9 The Karakoram Highway, Pakistan

The rail system in Japan is so good, most visitors opt for public transport to get around, and we’re big fans of it, too. The fast, efficient, clean and safe option makes getting around a simple pleasure. But there are still some remote areas where four wheels are best – with stunning scenery and comfortable roads to enjoy en route.

Things to know before your road trip

Driving in Japan is a surprisingly straightforward affair, and hiring a car is just as easy, too. Foreigners looking to hire a vehicle will need to have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), but this is becoming a basic requirement in most countries now.

Typically all cars are graded by size and put into classes. The Kei (light) option is fine for city commuting and short jaunts, but you wouldn’t really want to tackle any of the expressways in these economic vehicles. The Standard Class will suit most road-trip requirements; if you have the time, you could even plan longer routes that take more than a month, as packing your luggage into the boot won’t be a problem. Green vehicles are increasingly popular here, too, while for the ultimate show-offs there are luxury and sports options. And if you’re travelling as a family or in a larger group, how about a minivan?

The most important thing is to know what to expect. Mountain trails are very different to coastal routes, and the right car can make the experience more enjoyable. Speed limits are relatively low in Japan, and as such many Japanese drivers tend to take their time, even on the expressways.

A couple of other things to note. If you’re planning to cover any great distance, you will almost inevitably use a toll road. So check out expressway passes and ETC cards that can save you money and time. Finally, most vehicles come with satnav as standard – but be sure it’s set to your language before starting off.

So you’ve sorted out your vehicle and are all set, but where to go? Here are some of our top picks.

Roller Coaster Road, Hokkaido

The breathtaking northernmost island in Japan is worth driving around for a few days. Sapporo, the capital, hosts an annual snow festival and has previously hosted the Winter Olympics. The best feature for drivers, however, is the undulating carriageway in Furano, which has earned the nickname of the Roller Coaster Road. A road trip and theme-park ride all in one go!

Kyoto to Tsunoshima

The starting point here is Kyoto , one of Japan’s most popular cultural destinations where you can enjoy a few relaxing nights before hitting the road. Tsunoshima, a remote island in the Japan Sea and part of the Yamaguchi prefecture, is the perfect destination for a short road trip from Kyoto, as the approach from the mainland is a spectacular bridge over the ocean.

Osaka to Chiba

You have to be a fan of urban driving for this one – and potential traffic jams – but if you time it right, you’ll get a fantastic driving experience though the tunnels of Tokyo. Hit the capital after dark, when the Bayshore Route of the Shuto Expressway becomes a futuristic playground. The route, known as the Wangan, takes you around Tokyo Bay through long tunnels and over bridges. The rest of the route isn’t as exciting, but it is a scenic way to cut through Tokyo to the underrated Chiba.

Mount Fuji to Mount Aso

Mount Fuji is so popular, it’s relatively easy to get to by rail or road, but the ultimate destination is Mount Aso, the country’s most active volcano, on Kyushu, Japan’s third largest island. The road here is picturesque, and there’s little to worry about in terms of volcanic activity, so you can relax and enjoy the ride. For the best views of Mount Fuji, take the Mikuni Pass, although it might be a slight detour at the start of your trip.

Hakone Hill Turnpike, Kanagawa

Let your inner boy racer takeover on this hill climb through the trees in Hakone. Just north of Tokyo, this area, known as a geopark, has plenty of hot springs to enjoy and calming ryokans to stay in. On your way you might end up driving through turnpikes. The roads here are usually quiet, so you won’t be expected to drift round corners as your tyres light up, but it’s still a thrill.

Ha Giang loop: 350km

Ha Giang is a mountain province in northeast Vietnam where you can easily find high mountains or deep valleys. Ha Giang loop has a total length of 350km and is considered as one of the toughest road trips in Vietnam. The most beautiful part starts from Ha Giang city to Yen Minh, Dong Van, over Ma Pi Leng pass.

On the way travellers can admire breathtaking mountain scenery, enjoy an interested boat trip to explore the emerald Nho Que River, hike through rice terraces or stop at some ethnic villages to learn more about cultural identities of local minorities groups, including Hmong, Tay and Thai.

Cao Bang – Ban Gioc: 80km

The drive from Cao Bang to Ban Gioc Waterfall at China-Vietnam border will take you from rice fields, lush farmlands, stilt villages and crystal clear lakes. It is one of the wildest road trips in Vietnam.

During the journey, travelers will conquer the 3.5-kilometer-long Ma Phuc Pass, which can only be handled by experienced drivers. The pass allows travelers to admire gorgeous terraced rice fields below.

The 25-kilometer journey starts from Ben Dam Port, where mainland ferries arrives. Travelers can wind their way past forested hillsides, French colonial prisons, before ending up at Dam Trau, a long stretch of beach near the airport.

W e all enjoy a grumble, especially about the price of gas , but recent research by UK car financing company Moneybarn suggests that the US is one of the cheapest countries in the world for filling up a vehicle.

Moneybarn looked at various factors such as the availability of EV charging stations, road quality, and average price of fuel to paint a picture of how that differs by country. They also looked at the annual search volume on Google for “road trip” and brought us a list of the top ten nations in the world for driving.

It might come as a surprise that the US reigns supreme as the happiest place for drivers. The US has the highest car ownership rate globally, with an estimated 80 percent of the population having access to a vehicle. This widespread car ownership makes road trips and scenic drives highly accessible. The nation has a staggering almost four million miles of roads. This vast network offers us so many options for a road trip, from scenic byways to steep and thrilling routes and historic cross-country drives through ghost towns .

The study also reveals that the average price of gas in the US sits at around $0.91 per liter, while diesel comes in slightly higher at $1.05 per liter. This translates to an average cost of $0.98 per liter. So you can drive happy this summer across many major road trip routes knowing that you’re getting one of the best deals compared to many other countries.

Moneybarn’s study also identified other countries that scored highly for driver happiness. Here’s the top ten:

Norway comes in second. The average price of gas and diesel is $2.04 per liter, but the breathtaking scenery and a focus on sustainable transportation solutions may play a role in Norway’s driver satisfaction.

Norway’s fjords were made for road trips . Some of the most popular routes take drivers through The Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway, along The Atlantic Road on the west coast, known for its series of bridges that seem to defy gravity, and past The Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.

Coming in third was Japan. Efficiency and culture of courtesy on the roads could be contributing factors to Japan’s ranking, as well as epic routes along the Shimanami Kaidō with views of the Seto Inland Sea , the coast-to-coast across the entire island of Hokkaido, and the temple viewing road trip on the island of Shikoku.

Similar to the US, Canada has some of the best road trips in the world, but the average price of gas and diesel is higher, costing around $1.26.

When is the trip?

You could take I-40 to avoid the traffic near Los Angeles.

Drive 40 to Barstow then US 58 to Bakersfield

You voukd drive I-10 to Phoenix then either cut up to kingman to Barstow or head to palm springs to yucca valley thrn north to bsrdtoew

I hate I-10 through West Texas and southern New Mexico so I tend to want to avoid it.

I'd head for Temple (look up your local roads), then take TX-36 north to Abilene, then I-20 west to Sweetwater, then US-84 west allllll the way through Lubbock to Santa Rosa, NM (change clocks back an hour leaving Texas). Then I-40 west to Barstow, CA (change clocks back an hour leaving the Navajo Nation east of Holbrook, AZ), then I-15 south for just a minute in Barstow to CA-58 (not US-58) west to Bakersfield. You'll skip literally all of the SoCal traffic.

Between Needles and Barstow (150 miles) there are only two gas stations: one at Fenner, and one at Ludlow. Both are extremely expensive even by California standards, and I think the one at Fenner closes overnights.

This is either three long days' drive, or four medium days' drive.

Hotels in the West Texas are expensive due to gas businesses.

Malaysia's best road trips take in rainforests, beaches and more

With a wide-reaching bus system and fast trains whizzing across the country from the capital, Kuala Lumpur, it's easy to explore Malaysia without ever stepping inside a car. But exploring with your own wheels opens up a whole world of unexplored small towns, former colonial hamlets, misty mountains, forgotten lakes and viridian rainforests.

Most Malaysian roads are well maintained and perfectly paved – even in the remoter corners of the country – so exploring the country with a hire car is a real no-brainer. The majority of travelers can fly in, rent a car with a home license for 90 days, making for easy road trips across this country of beaches, jungles and historic cities.

To get you on the road, here are the eight best road trips in Malaysia.

The great West Coast crawl

Best scenic drive.

Kuala Lumpur–Penang; 249 miles (400km); allow 6 days

Skip the busy E1 highway north of Kuala Lumpur and trace the less-traveled west coast on Route 5 via a string of often missed towns such as riverside Kuala Selangor (home to the historic Bukit Malawati fort) and rural Sekinchan . Pass through endless paddy fields and veer inland to Teluk Intan via Sabak to marvel at the Menara Condong , Asia’s own version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Route 5 snakes back to the coast via Sitiawan and Lumut, where frequent ferries leave to Pulau Pangkor , home to flocks of hornbills, boat-making workshops and peaceful jungle-backed coves.

Continuing north, Route 60 stays glued to the sea, skirting Segari’s turtle conservation center and the beaches of Pantai Remis, a hub for Sino-Malay food. Up next is the unmissable lake town of Taiping , voted the third most sustainable city in the world in 2019, from where it’s a 15-minutes detour to mangrove boat rides and fresh seafood in Kuala Sepetang.

Take a left turn along the A190 at the Simpang Empat Semanggol turnoff and time travel back to colonial Malaya in the fishing town of Kuala Kurau. Branch off to nearby Kuala Gula, home to Malaysia’s biggest bird sanctuary and the Hua Seng Keng temple, a life-sized depiction of the ghoulish layers of Buddhist Hell.

Make one last stop in Parit Buntar to buy a bag of much-loved Guan Hiang biscuits (and take an evening firefly cruise in nearby Nibong Tebal, if time allows). To finish up, cross to Penang island by whizzing over the 15 mile (24km) Second Bridge to the southern beaches of Permatang Damar Laut, facing the island’s most scenic bay. Traipse up to historic George Town to finish off with a spectacular street food dinner.

East Coast road trip 

Best for beaches and islands.

Kota Bahru–Kuantan or Pekan; 230 miles (370km); allow 4 days

This classic coastal ride packs a punch, with splendid turquoise-ringed islands, minaret-studded river estuaries and cultural surprises along the fringes of Peninsular Malaysia’s most devoutly Islamic states. Before you leave Kota Bharu , Kelantan’s conservative capital, cruise 12.5 miles (20km) north to check out the group of curious Sino-Thai temples dotting the countryside around Tumpat, gateway to Thailand ’s troubled southern province of Narathiwat. Wat Mai Suwan Kiri (Dragon Boat Temple) is particularly striking. 

Start by the journey south by following the coast. A string of wide, empty beaches rolls all the way to Kuala Terengganu and Marang, and some of Malaysia’s most gorgeous islands – Pulau Perhentian , Pulau Redang and Pulau Kapas – are just a short boat ride away. The easiest island for a day trip is Pulau Perhentian, served by regular fast boats from Kuala Besut.

Route 3 hugs the shoreline as it plunges south past forgotten coves (stop to admire the imposing twin boulders at the mouth of Kemasik Beach) to reach the surf playground of Cherating . As you roll into Kuantan , the pace of life gets a tad faster; a sunset stroll at lively Pantai Teluk Cempedak and dinner at its busy food court are must-dos. To extend the trip, head 25 miles (40km) south to Pekan, with its unique collection of aristocratic Malay architecture.

The jungle drive

Best for families.

Penang–Kuala Lumpur; 434 miles (700km); allow 10 days

Start in Penang and see how quickly Malaysia’s urban surge gives way to the drowsy rhythms of the remote settlements dotted around the country’s mountainous and jungly interior. Beginning in George Town ’s incensed-wafted colonial center, drive across Kedah state to Lenggong, perhaps Malaysia’s least-known Unesco World Heritage Site . Hollowed out by a meteorite impact, this little-explored valley boasts a cluster of prehistoric sites and caves dating back 1.83 million years.

Continue to Tasik Temenggor, a man-made lake offering charming houseboat stays and easy access to Royal Belum State Park , one of the last remaining habitats for the critically endangered Malayan tiger. Route 4 keeps climbing across the 6890ft (2100m) Titiwangsa Range before plunging via Jeli to Dabong, where Gunung Stong State Forest Park and the deep limestone cave complex of Gua Ikan make for perfect pit-stops.

Swing by Gua Musang to reach blissful Pulai, a remote Chinese Hakka community that was only reached by a tarmac road in 1978. Its sloshing river is backed by rows of limestone karst pinnacles reminiscent of China’s Guilin .

Before you reach sleepy Jerantut, the main gateway to the jungle wonders of Taman Negara, there’s more caving and hiking at Merapoh and a chance to encounter the leftovers of British colonial rule in Kuala Lipis, once an important stop for Malaysia’s discontinued Jungle Railway. Spend at least a day hiking in Taman Negara (or exploring by boat), and then drive towards the capital, stopping for a taste of spiky durian at Temerloh or jumbo-sized encounters at Kuala Gandah’s elephant sanctuary .

The final ascent over cloud-enshrouded peaks on the Karak Highway is best broken either at the casinos and theme parks of the Genting Highlands , or with a glamping stay in the quaint riverside village of Janda Baik. Wrap up with a well-deserved dose of shopping and modernity at Kuala Lumpur’s Suria KLCC mall, and pay your respects to the 140ft (43m) golden statue of Lord Murugan fronting the 272 rainbow-colored steps that lead to the Hindu shrines of the Batu Caves .

Southern Malaysian crawl

Best for food and culture.

Kuala Lumpur–Johor Bahru; 318 miles (512km); allow 5 days

Leave the bustle of the capital behind to experience sand, culture and nature on both sides of the peninsula. Start by driving down the southwestern coast, taking in the beach resort of Port Dickson and the former Dutch colonial outpost (and fusion food hub) of Melaka , now a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Before cutting across the peninsula to Mersing – the main ferry port for wild and lovely Pulau Tioman – try a smorgasbord of Chinese and Malay food in Muar, the diminutive royal city of Johor state, and take a pit stop in offbeat Kluang to hike to the scenic summit of Gunung Lambak.

With a couple of extra days, consider the short detour north to Bekok and the waterfalls and villages of Endau-Rompin National Park, home to many communities of Orang Asli – literally, "first peoples." Driving south from Mersing, the southeastern coast curves to reach the swanky beach resorts of Desaru, famed for a sandbar that becomes a 'sky mirror' at low tide. It’s just a short drive to sprawling Johor Bahru , Malaysia’s southernmost city, which rises just across the strait from futuristic Singapore .

Sarawak explorer

Best for wildlife and indigenous culture.

Kuching–Miri; 466 miles (750km); allow 6 days

Experience amazing wildlife, indigenous Dayak culture and lush coastal scenery by driving a considerable section of the Pan Borneo Highway. Before you leave Kuching , pay a visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre for encounters with rescued orangutans (come for feeding time at 9am and 3pm daily), then drive inland past low, forested hills and ramshackle roadside settlements to Salcra junction. A short detour to Lubuk Hantu leads to Batang Ai National Park , an artificial lake teeming with wildlife and ringed by Iban longhouses.

Grab some juicy pineapples as you pass through quaint Sarikei before reaching the riverport of Sibu, where delicious Teochew cuisine pairs well with trips to 18th-century longhouses in nearby Bawang Assan. Join the coast at Mukah , the main settlement of the seafaring Melanau people, and consider an overnight stop at the superb Lamin Dana , a boutique cultural lodge preserving local heritage in Kampung Tellian.

The quiet glare of the South China Sea will shimmer on your windshield until you reach oil-rich Bintulu, where Pantai Tanjung Batu is a good spot to tuck your toes into the sand. Head northeast of the city to Similajau National Park for jungle hikes before hitting the road again towards Miri .

The staggering limestone caves of Niah National Park are a must-stop along the way; inhabited for nearly 40 millennia, they contain some of Southeast Asia’s oldest human bones. After a day trip to Lambir Hills National Park south of Miri, end this epic drive at sunset on Canada Hill – the site of the city’s first oil well – and enjoy views over the city’s sprawling coastline.

Kelabit Highland’s Logging Track

Best extreme road trip.

Miri–Bario; 155 miles (250km); 10–14 hours

Almost everyone takes the thrilling Twin Otter flight from Miri to reach Bario, principal township of the fascinating Kelabit Highlands, an indigenous heartland straddling the border between Sarawak and Indonesian Kalimantan . However, a few hardy adventurers access the highlands by driving 4x4 vehicles along the rough and muddy logging track that winds from Miri into upper Sarawak’s wild interior.

Snaking through endless palm oil plantations – a sad reminder of Malaysia’s problematic logging issues –  this drive will rattle your bones at every turn for 12 long hours before you finally rumble into the very Catholic village of Bario, where lingering longhouses are a reminder of waning tribal lifestyles.

Classic Sabah crossing

Best coast-to-coast road trip.

Kota Kinabalu–Sandakan; 200 miles (325km); allow 5 days

Take your leave of Kota Kinabalu ’s night markets and outlying islands and head west towards 13,435ft (4095m) Mt Kinabalu , Malaysia’s highest peak. Almost everyone makes the two-day, one-night trek to the summit, but you can also check the pulse of Sabah’s indigenous art scene at the Living Arts Center in charming riverside Tamparuli, and meet the woodcut artists of the Pangrok Sulap collective in Ranau before bunking down in alpine-like Kundasang.

Leaving the mountains behind, cut through the heart of Sabah, skirting small towns and ever-present palm oil plantations to the Sukau junction, where a worthy detour on the Kinabatangan River promises thrilling wildlife spotting by boat and atmospheric riverside accommodation. Roll on to Sepilok, with its world-renown orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. A few more miles will take you to slow-paced, multicultural Sandakan and its bay filled with WWII history and fresh seafood.

Sabah by the backdoor 

Best offbeat road trip.

Lahad Datu–Kota Kinabalu; 350 miles (564km); allow 7 days

To encounter some of Borneo’s most impressive rainforests, marine life and indigenous culture, take off from the coastal town Lahad Datu , beginning in either the Danum Valley Conservation Area or the Tabin Wildlife Reserve . Drive across the palm-strewn coast to the ugly duckling town of Semporna , the jump-off point for paradise islands such as Mabul, Kapalai and protected Sipadan, one of the world’s best dive sites.

Back on land, try Tawau ’s deserted beaches and follow nature trails at Tawau Hills Park before setting out for a lonesome drive across Sabah’s hilly interior to Orou Sapulot , an important hub for the Murut people, and the town of Keningau at the bottom of the flower-studded Crocker Range. End at Kota Kinabalu’s busy seafront and glitzy shopping malls, after one more stop in Tambunan, access point for 8668ft (2642m) Mount Trusmadi, Sabah’s second-highest peak. 

Tips for driving in Malaysia

Malaysia drives on the left, like the UK, and citizens of the 54 countries in the Commonwealth can rent a car using their home driving licenses for up to 90 days (other nationals will also need to carry an International Driving Permit).

To access any toll road in Malaysia, including the bridges leading to Penang island, you'll need to pay with a rechargeable Touch’n’Go card that is only issued to Malaysians. Ask your rental company for one if you plan on driving any stretch of the North-South Expressway (Route E1) or the Karak Highway connecting Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. Most other roads are well paved and toll-free.

The countryside is relatively quiet, but when driving in cities, be prepared for drivers flouting traffic rules, especially in Penang, whose erratic traffic is hard for even Malaysians coming from other states to cope with. Kuala Lumpur's traffic system is also bewildering for first-timers. On weekdays, traffic jams are the norm in most Malaysian cities; Saturdays are usually quieter than Sundays.

Day trip: A farm-inspired brunch in Stuart. A Tuscan wine shop in Hobe Sound.

When I lived in Miami, I’d drive to the upper Keys sometimes for lunch. My parents and I loved to do this, spur of the moment, drawn by the promise of fresh fish and key lime pie. For me, it was about the drive, particularly the stretch of road that ran between the ocean and the bay. That first sight of water was a much-needed segue into a more relaxed dimension.

I always remember this when I drive north on U.S. Highway 1, past Tequesta and toward Hobe Sound. The segue to chill is not a water view but the blur of preserve land that’s part of Jonathan Dickinson State Park. For a few soothing miles, there are no strip plazas or other signs of big-city life. By the time you’ve reached the first glimmers of Hobe Sound, you’ve shifted into island mode. For me, this alone is worth a day trip. 

On a recent Saturday, I took such a trip. Here are my three favorite experiences from my Palm Beach Gardens to Stuart drive.

Bridge Road: the ‘establishing shot’

Driving north on U.S. 1/Federal Highway, I wanted to double-down on the island feel. So I made a right turn on Bridge Road and took the scenic drive that is always my Hobe Sound establishing shot. In filmmaker terms, it means the shot that captures your setting and sometimes mood. Southeast Bridge Road always does just that.

Drive slowly beneath the canopy of intertwined banyan tree branches, and you’ve reached the enchanted-forest part of your day trip. Cross the Bridge Road Bridge and you’ll find another tree-lined stretch before you reach Hobe Sound Martin County Beach Park, where you can park and access the public beach. Even if you haven’t planned a beach day, you can soak up the salt air, the sun and surf. 

On this recent day trip, we only paused at the beach for a look-and-see. We had brunch plans in Stuart.

Brunch at the Colab Kitchen

You can only follow a cool spot on Instagram for so long before the food photos and funky al fresco views beckon you to visit. Stuart’s Colab Kitchen restaurant and market has been calling my name for a while now. And when I heard the farm-inspired restaurant and market had a new brunch menu, I headed north.

When I got there, I realized Colab Kitchen’s concept goes beyond the farm inspiration. It is as “farm-to-table” as you get. As you step into the spacious and modern building in downtown Stuart, you’re greeted by a kind of farmers market. You can buy freshly harvested greens from Indiantown’s Colab Farms, produce, farm eggs, fresh bread, bakery items, prepared sauces, natural toiletries and other items.

The main dining room and bar area follows in a sweep of clean lines and modern lighting over more rustic wood floors. It’s a welcoming space, both in decor and hospitality. Even though we arrived less than an hour before the end of brunch, we were greeted warmly and led to a sunny indoor table that offered terrific views of Colab Kitchen’s large dining patio and sprawling lawn.

The brunch menu proved to be a problem, but only because I wanted to order everything on it. It’s one of those rare menus on which the “healthy” items — the salads and bowls — are as tempting as the comfort-food items, such as the smoked brisket hash with poached eggs, sweet potato, onions and sourdough toast ($19), the lemon-ricotta pancakes ($17) and the egg-topped tomato pie ($19). 

I ordered a small-plates type of brunch because I couldn’t decide on one big dish. It offered me a good introduction to Colab Kitchen’s talents.

We started with house-made sourdough bread ($14), a deliciously crusty half-loaf served on a wood board with salt-sprinkled cultured butter, roasted garlic and a good dollop of the best pimento cheese I’ve had in a while.

Our deviled eggs appetizer ($9) was almost too lovely to eat: Four boiled egg halves, topped with a tall swirl of deviled filling and crowned with a bit of tomato jam and pickled mustard seed, were served atop a mix of farm greens. 

I had to have some crispy, thick-cut bacon on the side ($5), and it did not disappoint. Ditto for the loaded hash browns side dish ($8), a perfectly crispy smash topped with melting cheeses and snipped chives — put an egg on top and you’ve got a yummy entree. 

We got a sweet kick from one of the daily dessert specials, a warm peach bread pudding topped with caramel and vanilla ice cream ($12). 

As much as I wanted to try the lemon-ricotta pancakes, I had to leave those for the next time. (Because I’m hoping there will be a next time!)

A Tuscan wine shop visit

Heading back south, I made an obligatory stop at my favorite area wine shop, Casa del Vino. This cozy shop is where proprietors Silvia and Franco Mininni have welcomed wine lovers, wine novices and the community at large since opening seven years ago. 

They furnished the place with decorative touches from their native Tuscany, a few comfy chairs and a long wooden table they hand-built and covered with a tapestry of wine crates. Inspired by the eclectic variety of wine crates they had amassed during years of working with Italian wineries, they built the table inside their warehouse a good two years before opening the shop. 

“There was no particular reason why we built it, but we thought that maybe one day we would know why,” says Silvia. “Two years later, we opened this place, and this table is now a major part of it.”

It didn’t take long for her to realize the why of the table. It brought together a new wine-appreciating community, sparked conversation and new friendships over generous pours of wine and cheese and salumi boards topped with cured meats and cheeses imported from Italy.

Now Silvia and Franco have given their shop a new focus. While they continue to sell imported wine and goods at Casa del Vino, they are serving multi-course dinners just about every night. The dinners, intimate affairs that tend to sell out quickly, are offered at the wine-crate table.

During my recent visit to the shop, Silvia told me she and Franco plan to expand into the space next door in the plaza. The new space will be for wine tastings, classes and other events, she said.

I could not leave without buying some of my Casa del Vino Italian favorites: pecorino studded with pistachios, mortadella from Bologna, Italian crackers, a bottle of Ad Astra Super Tuscan, a sippable pinot bianco from Trentino and a fiano wine from Campania.

Back home later, I thought about my day’s adventures — and of the Italy I’ve found in Hobe Sound — as I enjoyed bites of the pecorino and mortadella.

Originally, Vladimir had four gates guarding the main approaches to the town. The 12th-century Golden Gates, which stand in the middle of ulitsa Moskovskaya, a few hundred yards west of the Cathedral of the Assumption, guarded the western approach.
