Santorini is the supermodel of the Greek islands, a head-turner whose face is instantly recognizable around the world: multicolored cliffs soar out of a sea-drowned volcanic crater, topped by whitewashed buildings.

With its reputation for dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets and volcanic-sand beaches, it’s hardly surprising Santorini features on so many travelers’ bucket lists.  If you're planning to join the crowd, here’s what you need to know for your first trip to Santorini .

Part of the Cyclades island group, Santorini (officially known as Thira, a name that encompasses the volcanic islets within Santorini’s orbit) sits in the Aegean Sea, roughly halfway between Athens and Crete.

The island is shaped like a wonky croissant, and the neighboring islets hint at the fact that Santorini was once circular. It was known as Strongili (the Round One). Thousands of years ago, a huge volcanic eruption caused the center of Strongili to sink, leaving a caldera (or crater) with towering cliffs along the east side, now Santorini’s trademark landscape.

Beyond the views, Santorini's vineyards and volcanic beaches

Santorini’s commercial development is focused on the caldera-edge clifftops in the island’s west, with large clusters of whitewashed buildings nesting at dizzying heights, spilling down cliff-sides and offering gasp-inducing views from land or sea.  Fira , the island’s busy capital, sprawls north into villages called Firostefani (about a 15-minute walk from Fira) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera edge, about a 30-minute walk from Fira). A path running through these villages is lined with upmarket hotels, restaurant terraces and endless photo opportunities.

These three conjoined settlements draw most visitors, together with the stunning and quite exclusive village of Oia in Santorini’s north. There’s a growing number of hotels in the island’s south, offering caldera views to the north and northeast. Akrotiri’s views come cheaper than Oia’s, but it’s a fair way from the action of Fira.

Santorini’s east coast is lesser known than the celebrated, elevated west coast. Here, the caldera-edge heights have sloped down to sea level, and volcanic-sand beaches and resorts offer a very different drawcard. East coast resorts such as Kamari and Perissa have a more traditional (and more affordable) island-holiday appeal: sunlounger-filled beaches, water sports, bars and taverna-lined promenades. The east coast’s beaches are lined with black sand. On the south coast, there’s a string of beaches famed for their multi-colored sand. The dramatic Red Beach is a traveler favorite.

The island’s interior is dotted with vineyards and traditional villages that let you see beyond the tourist hustle. Make a stop in Pyrgos for great eats and a wander through charming backstreets.

Food, archaeology,  open-air cinema: things to do in Santorini

Sure, Santorini's views will stop you in your tracks and you'll get great glimpses into how A-listers travel, but there’s plenty more to explore, from a gorgeous open-air cinema to a cool microbrewery , wine caverns adorned with artworks, and cooking demonstrations and classes  that celebrate Santorini’s growing foodie culture.

The obvious prime activity on Santorini is to walk the caldera edge and admire the views. Walks in and around Fira are spectacular, particularly heading north to Firostefani and Imerovigli along the caldera-edge pathway. Keep walking and you’ll eventually reach Oia, but be aware that this is no small undertaking and the trail beyond Imerovigli can be rough. It’s about 5.6 miles (9km) in all, and a good four-hour walk, one way.

Santorini’s lauded wines are its crisp dry whites and the amber-colored, unfortified dessert wine known as Vinsanto. Both are made from the indigenous grape variety, assyrtiko . About a dozen local vineyards host tastings (usually with a small charge) and some offer food, with scenery and local produce combining to great effect. Start your investigations at  SantoWines .

Santorini’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating site of Akrotiri displaying a Minoan city destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1613 BC. In Fira, the impressive Museum of Prehistoric Thera helps piece together the story of ancient Akrotiri.

Nature’s handiwork is on display from any waterfront seat come sundown, but prime sunset-viewing on Santorini is in Oia, where thousands of tourists flock to admire (and applaud) nightfall.

Any tour your heart desires can be organized, and there are dozens of agencies ready to help with winery visits, archaeology tours, sunset-watching and more. The most popular option is a cruise, and the classic itinerary takes in the caldera’s volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni, including a stop at the former’s crater and the latter’s hot springs.

Accommodation with a view in Santorini comes at a price

If you can afford it, first-timers to Santorini should stay on the caldera edge to experience the full "wow" factor. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia have hotels and villas with whitewashed interiors, terraces and infinity pools that have inspired marriage proposals, high-fashion photo shoots and many Instagram posts.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to stay in these view-blessed locales for budget-conscious travelers: caldera-view accommodations come at a premium, and they are in hot demand. You'll also need to book well in advance.

There are decent midrange options in Fira and Firostefani (less so in Imerovigli and Oia), away from the front-row panoramas. There’s also a great hostel and a budget-friendly campground (with rooms) on the outskirts of Fira.

If you’re more interested in a beach break or activities, stay in Perissa or Kamari (and catch the bus into Fira). The advantage of this is some respite from the camera-toting caldera crowds, plus more reasonable prices.

The best times to visit Santorini without the crowds

Peak travel time to Santorini is July and August, when prices soar and hotels, viewpoints and beaches are packed with tourists. The shoulder season months of April, May, early June, late September and October are better times to visit. Things are marginally quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably quieter on the east coast (where accommodation bargains are plentiful).

Don’t discount a winter break, when crowds are scarce (and prices low) while the scenery is still breathtaking. Santorini is working on positioning itself as a year-round destination.

Reach Santorini by ferry, catamaran or plane 

Frequent ferries and high-speed catamarans link Santorini with Athens’ main port of Piraeus, Crete and various Cycladic islands. Check  OpenSeas  for ferry timetables. Santorini Airport has year-round flight connections with Athens, and summertime European connections. On the island, bus services are decent, if crowded in summer. Lots of companies also offer cars, mopeds and ATV four-wheeler bikes to rent.

The majority of visitors prefer to visit the island in July and August since this is the best time to visit Santorini in order to enjoy the sunshine and the sea is at its warmest temperatures . At the same time, that may often be the only option due to work and school vacation schedules.

However, if you are able to visit Santorini outside the peak season time frame, you will certainly be rewarded. June and September, for instance, guarantee that you will have the sweetest summer weather without the tourist crowds . There are several things to do later in autumn or spring as well, while winter has also been gaining an increasing amount of attention.

Note that organized boat tours are not available throughout the year and the ideal period for sea-related activities and sports is from May to September.

The sun is shining bright during the high season. Unlike other locations in Greece, Santorini rarely suffers from heat waves over 30℃. The summer breeze of the Aegean keeps the island cool. The temperature is usually between 19℃ and 27℃.

Long hikes and bike rides are not part of this list; on the contrary, intense physical activity is not recommended so that you can prevent heatstroke. The temperature is also mild, fluctuating between 15℃ and 22℃ most of the time, while daylight hours are long and the sunshine gets more enjoyable than ever.

Things to do in Spring & Fall

With the weather conditions being that good, this is a good time of the year to engage in any activity you wish. Strolling, hiking, and exploring are recommended, while water sports and swimming are definitely on the table. The nightlife slows down a little, so it is better to check out which facilities are available. Some of them operate until as late as mid-October. Fewer tourists translate into less traffic; hence, you will be able to approach landmarks and viewpoints more comfortably. The beaches will also have a peaceful and private atmosphere, but the water might be cold. Visiting during the Orthodox Easter (usually in late April or early May) is a great opportunity to experience an authentic side of Santorini because of the many Easter celebrations. October remains a pleasant time to visit Santorini, with the earliest days of the month still offering beach time and swimming before the cool temperatures reach the island. The weather is pleasant and great for hiking and exploring the island as the more frequent rainy days have not begun.  

Crowds have reduced, and so have the prices. Although they have not yet reached the lowest point, there will still be plenty of great deals available, making October a great time of year for those looking to experience the best of Santorini without the mobs of tourists everywhere.

November in Santorini

The actual transition to the winter months starts in November. The month begins with pleasant and mild weather and cools off slightly. Then, winter rains start, though you can still find clear skies for most of the days in November. Finally, crowds begin to reduce, and businesses gradually close for the season. There are plenty of great deals, and while beach days are not realistic, the island is excellent for hiking and exploring without crowds or traffic.

December in Santorini

In December, Santorini starts to fall asleep for the winter, with many seasonal workers leaving for their home cities. As a result, the island is quiet, with much of the island’s businesses closed; Fira and Oia have some but not all hotels, restaurants, and shops open. The weather is cool, though there are still sunny days that make for comfortable sightseeing and exploring. Still, the weather is less predictable, and beach days are impossible.

The best time to visit Santorini: few crowds, great deals, and blissed-out weather

Whitewashed buildings encircle the caldera’s cliffs, their blue roofs complementing the Aegean Sea—no matter when you visit Santorini , the Greek island is always stunning.

Still, summer is undoubtedly the most popular time, when hordes of tourists flock to the island. Between June and August, Santorini experiences the highest temperatures, making it ideal for beachside activities like swimming and getting a tan. However, you’ll have to deal with crowds and skyrocketing prices.

As the weather gets chillier, crowds begin to dwindle over the autumn months from September to November. By December, Santorini enters its low season until March, and you’ll get to experience a slower-paced lifestyle, although it’ll be too cold to swim. Things begin to heat up in April, and May sees more sunshine while still being fairly peaceful.

So when is the best time to go to Santorini? Here’s a round-up of what you can expect in each season.

1. Santorini’s peak season: June–August

Summer in santorini.

Best for: Beach vacations

From June to August, Santorini enjoys the ultimate beach weather. It’s hot and sunny, with average temperatures of 75 to 80°F, and clear skies are guaranteed. The sea is warm enough for swimming, and you can also rent sunbeds in popular beaches like Kamari Beach and Perissa Black Sand Beach .

This is when Santorini sees the biggest crowds, and every hotel, bar, and restaurant is operating at full capacity. You’ll also get to enjoy special summer events like open-air cinemas and regattas. Ferries and flights run frequently during this period, including seasonal international flights, making it incredibly convenient to travel here in summer. As prices for travel and lodging can get expensive, especially in Fira and Oia , we recommend making bookings as early as possible.

Hoping to beat the crowds? Why not go scuba diving in a volcanic reef , where your only companions will be the variety of marine life? Or explore hidden hot springs around Thirassia on this private snorkeling adventure . You can even go fishing and eat what you caught, or relax on a catamaran with an open bar and a barbecue buffet meal .

However, watch out for the Meltemi winds, which tend to blow strongly in the Cyclades during summer; some water activities may be canceled due to choppy waves. Sadly, you won’t be able to stroll around barefoot on the sand—Santorini’s black sand beaches are made up of volcanic rocks and ash, so they can get unbearably hot to walk on in the blazing sun.

2. Santorini’s shoulder season: September–October, April–May

The shoulder seasons in Santorini happen in spring and fall, when the crowds are either trickling in or dwindling. While you’ll experience way fewer crowds than peak season, we recommend that you make prior bookings to get the best deals. Most businesses will be open, and it’s the best time to visit Santorini for comfortable sightseeing. The only downside is that you might have to prepare for some cold snaps and rainy days, as the weather isn’t as predictable as summer.

Fall in Santorini

Best for: Honeymoons, weather, fewer crowds

As the summer crowds dwindle, autumn is a great time to be in Santorini as you’ll get to enjoy great weather, cheaper prices, and more peace. Temperatures begin to drop to an average of 75°F in September and 69°F in October. As the sea heats up over summertime, you’ll still be able to swim—at least until mid-October.

This is a good time to enjoy your honeymoon, as the island begins to feel more tranquil although most businesses are still open. Make the most of this season to do romantic activities like horse riding on the beach , watching the sunset on a luxury catamaran , or having your photos taken on a rooftop . Fall also sees a number of festivals like Ifestia, which is dedicated to the Minoan eruption of Santorini.

Spring in Santorini

Best for: Hiking, sightseeing, spring blooms

Santorini is mostly sunny in spring, with average temperatures of 61 to 68°F. Unfortunately, the water is usually too cold for swimming, although hot springs might be worth a dip. Instead, we recommend hiking around Santorini to enjoy the lovely spring weather and blossoming bougainvilleas and wildflowers. The Fira to Oia hiking trail offers spectacular views of the caldera, and you can even join a small-group tour to learn more about the island’s history along the way.

With Greek Easter occurring in April, Santorini begins getting livelier. Holy Week is the biggest religious festival of the Greek Orthodox calendar, and locals in Santorini celebrate with mouth-watering feasts, church ceremonies, and other traditional rituals. The village of Pyrgos is particularly atmospheric on Good Friday night, lighting up with flaming aluminum cans as a procession of candles and paper lanterns takes place.

Most businesses should be open by mid-April, including vineyards and wineries, which you can visit on a wine tasting tour .

3. Santorini’s low season: November–March

Best for: Cheap deals, no crowds

Traditionally, winter to early spring is off-season in Santorini. While you definitely won’t encounter hordes of tourists, more travelers are starting to appreciate this season for quieter vibes and cheaper prices. Temperatures are in the 50s, with some rain, wind, and cloudy skies.

While there will be at least one or two ferries and flights a day, transport to Santorini will be much more limited. The weather can also cause travel disruptions if there are rough waters or strong winds. Most businesses will be closed, especially nightclubs and beach resorts, though areas like Fira and Oia definitely see some activity. But if you’re hoping to experience Santorini’s buzzing nightlife, winter isn’t ideal.

Many hotels are starting to remain open during winter to accommodate the increasing number of off-peak visitors. Villa Manos , for example, even keeps its pool open, and Blue Dolphins Apartment & Suites ensures you can still soak in the hot tub.

This is the best time to explore Santorini like a local—trust us when we say that the world-famous sunsets in Oia are much more stunning when there are no crowds in your way. Plus, with the whole island feeling like your personal playground, you’ll be able to take all the photographs you want without worrying about being photobombed.

While many tourist sites may be closed, you’ll still have plenty of things to do in Santorini in winter. Attractions like Skaros Rock , Ancient Thera , and the Castle of St Nicholas can be explored year-round, and some tours, like this winter cruise around the caldera , are still available. Where is santorini located.

Santorini is located in the Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 miles) southeast of mainland Greece. The island is part of a group of islands called the Cyclades, which also includes Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros.

How big is Santorini?

Santorini is quite a small island, the area is only 76 km² (29 mi²). The length of the island is 16 km (10 miles) and the width varies between 1 km (0.6 miles) and 5 km (3 miles). It takes roughly 45 minutes to drive from one end of Santorini to the other.

Santorini is home to roughly 15,500 people but this number swells to over 200,000 in the summer months as tourists flock to the island.

What is the Santorini caldera?

The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption, which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Bronze Age. The eruption was so powerful that the center of the island sank into the sea and the rest of the island got heavily damaged.

The Santorini caldera is a large, crescent-shaped crater that was formed during the eruption. The caldera is surrounded by the steep cliffs of Santorini and the island of Thirassia. Santorini is the only place in the world where you can find a caldera like this.

How many days to spend in Santorini?

Most people recommend spending at least 3 days in Santorini , but really the ideal Santorini itinerary depends on what you want to do and see.

If you’re mainly interested in relaxing on the beach or at your resort, then 3 days is probably enough. But if you want to explore Santorini’s towns and villages, go on day trips to nearby islands, or do some wine tasting, then you’ll need 4-5 days.

What currency is used in Santorini?

Greece is a member of the European Union and they are using Euro (€) as its official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted across the country and there are many ATMs where you can withdraw cash. It’s always good to have some cash with you as the smaller bazaars usually don’t accept credit cards.

Which visa is required to visit Santorini?

As Santorini is part of Greece and therefore the European Union, the Schengen rules apply. This means that if you have a valid Schengen visa, you can enter Santorini without any problem.

How to Get to Santorini

Flying to santorini.

The easiest way of visiting Santorini is by plane. Santorini has only one airport, Thira Airport (JTR), located on the east side of the island. The airport is close to Kamari village and it is roughly 6 km (3.7 miles) from Fira.

In the summer period, you’ll find numerous direct flights to Santorini from European cities such as London, Vienna, Paris, or Amsterdam.

If you’re visiting Santorini from the USA, Canada, Australia, or other non-European countries, you must get a connecting flight to Athens or another European city that operates a direct flight to Santorini.

Taking the ferry to Santorini

The other option for getting to Santorini is taking a ferry.

There are daily ferries from Athens, Naxos, and Paros to Santorini all year round. It takes like 5-7 hours to reach Santorini from Athens, a one-way standard ticket costs between €33-70.

Since Paros and Naxos are closer, you only need like 2-3 hours to reach Santorini, a one-way standard ticket costs between €23-45.

From mid-March until the end of September there are direct ferries connecting Santorini with many other Greek islands, so it’s the best and easiest way to get to Santorini from Mykonos , Ios, Milos, Folegandros, or Crete.

Usually, there are more ferry operator companies on the same route with various prices and duration. As a rule of thumb, a longer duration means a lower price. You can also purchase different ticket categories on a ferry like a deck lounge, standard seats, business, cabin, or VIP.

Best Time to Visit Santorini

High season.

The high season in Santorini runs from late June to early September. As you can imagine, the island is full of tourists during this season and the prices are at their peak. The weather is usually hot and sunny, which makes it perfect for relaxing at the beach.

If you are more into sightseeing or hiking, looking to save some money, or if you don’t tolerate the crowds too well, I would recommend avoiding the high season.

Shoulder season

Visiting Santorini in the shoulder season, typically in May-June or September-October is a great choice. You can still easily reach the island as the direct flights and ferries are still in operation.

All of the hotels and restaurants are open, the prices are better, and there are fewer tourists on the island.

Please note that in May and October the sea can be too cold for swimming, so if you want beach weather, try to aim for June or September.

Originally all the hotels and restaurants were closed between November and April on Santorini. However, as the island got more and more popular over the years, more hotels and restaurants are staying open during winter.

The island is significantly calmer during the winter months and with lower prices and mild Mediterranean weather, Santorini can be a great choice if you want to enjoy some  winter sun in Europe .

The temperatures are generally mild, around 15°C (59°F) during the day but if you’re unlucky, the weather can be rainy and windy as well.

How to Get Around in Santorini

Public transport.

The cheapest way of getting around Santorini is to use the local buses. Fira is the main hub of the bus system and you can get a direct bus to almost every part of the island.

However, if you are staying outside of Fira, that means first you have to take a bus to Fira, and only then to your final destination.

Buses are operated by KTEL and they run regularly every day. Prices vary based on the routes, but usually a one-way ticket costs between €1.6-2.3. You can check the timetable and the prices on the  official website .

Car/ATV Rental

Having a rental can make your life so much easier on Santorini. If you’re planning to explore the whole island, this is definitely the best way to do it. Taxis are outrageously expensive in Santorini so I would recommend avoiding them as much as you can.

You will find a few pick-up and drop-off locations in Santorini but the ones in the ferry port and in the airport are the most convenient ones. The Santorini airport is located in the village of Kamari and the ferry port is located in the capital city of Fira.

Both ATV and car rentals typically start from €40 per day excluding fuel. I recommend booking a vehicle well in advance, especially if you’re visiting during the summer months.

One practical tip: If you are planning to rent a car or ATV at the ferry port, leave yourself enough time for the drop-off procedure! There is only one narrow, zigzag road that leads you down to the port.

Given that the port is little and there are not too many places for cars, the road usually gets very busy. That means most probably you will be stuck in traffic.

It’s only a 3.5 km long road, but it can take up to 30-45 minutes just to get down to the port. So definitely plan some extra time for that!

Where to Stay in Santorini

If you’re visiting Santorini for the first time, you might feel a bit overwhelmed when it comes to deciding actually where to stay in Santorini. Don’t worry though, as this Santorini travel guide is here to help you out!

For starters, the island has basically two different sides with many towns to stay in, so you need to pay attention to which one you choose.

The caldera towns are located on the western side of Santorini and this is undoubtedly the favorite part of tourists visiting Santorini. The most popular towns in this part include Oia, Fira, Imerovigli and Firostefani.

The beach towns are situated in the eastern part of the island and if you’re looking for saving some money, it can be a great choice to stay at one of them. The most popular beach towns are Kamari and Perissa, where you can find beautiful black sand beaches.

Pitogyros (Oia) – Located in the heart of Oia, Pitogyros is a great place to get your daily fix of gyros. The restaurant has a large outdoor seating area and is one of the most budget-friendly restaurants on the island.

Ammoudi Fish Tavern (Oia) – Located in the Ammoudi Bay just below Oia, this fish tavern is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood with a view. It’s a bit overpriced but the food is delicious and the view is priceless.

Lolita’s Gelato (Oia) – If you’re into ice cream, you need to try Lolita’s Gelato. This gelateria has a large selection of flavors and is located in the center of Oia.

The Athenian House (Imerovigli) -For gastronomy lovers, this fine-dining restaurant is a must. The Athenian House serves modern Greek cuisine and has an extensive wine list. Book a table for sunset and enjoy the views of Santorini’s caldera!

Confetti Dessert Boutique Santorini (Imerovigli) – Hands down one of the best places for breakfast in Santorini! This cute cafe serves up hearty breakfast dishes, delicious desserts, coffee, and fresh juices.

Let’s Eat (Imerovigli) – Let’s Eat is a great option for budget-friendly Santorini eats. The restaurant is located in the heart of Imerovigli and serves reasonably-priced traditional Greek food.

Cheaper areas are the black beaches of Monolithos, Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos and local villages of Messaria, Finikia, while the most expensive lodgings in Santorini are those located on the Cliffside  and Villas and Suites with Caldera View.

Best hotel deals can be found from March till late May (except Orthodox Easter) and then in late September, October to December.

Winter season is the cheapest, if you agree to choose just from a few hotels staying open.

We advise you to book your tickets in advance, as during the high season or on holidays like Orthodox Easter or Holy Spirit Day you may not find any on the spot.

• Ferry boats to the islands stop their trips somewhat mid October to many destinations, so be aware.
• Highspeed boats and superjets stop travelling even earlier.

Easter in Santorini

Mind that Easter is a busy time in Santorini and it’s cold to swim yet, but most of the days we already enjoy the warmth of our black sand at the beaches.

Easter is a sacred, unforgettable time in the island.

Many Greeks are visiting Santorini at that time to experience traditions living only here.

If you ever have a chance to come to the island during Orthodox Easter, do not miss it.

Fira, Pyrgos village and Prophet Elijah monastery up the top of the mountain are the key places for Easter night , while Easter Sunday is great to be spent in Kamari or Perissa eating traditional lamb grilled on fire and celebrating with the locals.

Participating in Greek celebrations you can understand the Greek character better!

For us Easter is often the beginning of the season.

Those days some nightclubs and bars first open their doors.

Swimming season in Santorini goes on from mid or late May till the beginning of November.

Do not expect warm sea in May though.

The hottest months are July and August, but it can be hot enough already from June till mid September.

Lot’s of things to do and to discover Santorini is a great place for almost everything you may expect from a vacation spot.

Knowing weather conditions in Santorini in different months of the year can help you to choose the right time to travel.

The most mild weather is definitely in April – the beginning of May and mid September to early November.

Usually it’s not hot – that makes it easy to go around the island, to see and to do lots of things, to ride around or hike, visit the sites.

It can rain a bit sometimes, so you’d better be prepared.

You can expect fresh mornings, cold nights but rather warm daytime.

It may be windy, but less than during some other months.

Great time to come to Santorini if you experience some health issues or trying to avoid the heat.

These months though there’s a limited choice of restaurants and taverns open.

November is off-season for the known nightclubs and bars.

A bit of life in the evening can be found mostly in Fira.

For sightseers, photographers, people looking for less tiresome temperatures May and September-October are considered the best time of the year to pay a visit.

Short Monthly Guide

• March, April, and May are the months when the weather improves, prices are more affordable, some tourist shops, many lodgings and attractions are ready to meet their guests. The weather tends to become clearer, with fresh mornings and cool evenings. It may rain and could be cloudy sometimes, although after the rains of the previous winter Spring in Santorini will surprise you with lots of flowers and more greenery than usual.
• June to September is the high tourist season when everything is open and available. The demand is high, and reservations should be made in advance to secure accommodation as prices are at an all-time high. Early booking discounts are available for those who book in advance, but last-minute availability is almost impossible to find during July and August due to high demand.
• October and November have reduced activities due to the end of the season coming. While some shops remain open, accommodations are slowly shutting down. However, the weather is usually good, with the peacefulness of autumn and the absence of crowds in many days. Tourists can enjoy more of Santorini and still take advantage of the warm weather, which is a contrast to other parts of Europe (and even Northern and Central Greece) where cold weather has already arrived.
• December, January, and February are colder months with fewer tourists and closed attractions.

The Cheapest Time of the Year to Visit Santorini

To have a pleasant experience, tourists often seek to avoid crowds.

Visiting Santorini in August can result in crowded beaches and an unpleasant experience.

It’s rather challenging to have a memorable trip to Santorini, but many think it’s too expensive.

The best time to visit Santorini for budget-conscious travellers is during the off-season between the end of October and March when hotels have vacant rooms and airlines offer lower fares.

Bargains can also be found in April and October when seasonal transportation and tour fees are less expensive.

Consider early May or mid-October for good weather and affordable accommodation.

Check the outskirts of the towns and B&B, hostels and camping if your budget is short.

Another solution is to book your lodging in less known villages like Messaria or Finikia, Baxedes and going around the island using public transportation (during the high season only) or hiking.

If you dream of waking up with the view of the Volcano but can’t spend a fortune on your vacation, you may consider coming to Santorini in low season , in Spring or late October.

The beach resorts normally have a shorter season, open later and close sooner, while the season on the Cliffside and in Fira is usually longer.

Booking your vacation long time in advance can help you to save money both on tickets and accommodation.

You might be lucky to find cheap plane tickets from Athens to Santorini in winter, March – April, October – November, while the weather can be challenging.

The very beginning of November is our secret time to enjoy quiet weather, mild sun, beautiful sunsets, a swim in a bit chilly but pleasant waters and meditate.

It’s also the best timing for photographers , as well as April and part of May, as you need clear atmosphere for good pictures.

In summer months due to the heat it’s rare when you can capture one of those fantastic sunsets you could expect.

One day air-trip from Athens to Santorini is worth it if you plan to have a coffee on the Cliffside visiting Fira, but surely you need a car to go around.

The best you could do to see more is to take a private tour of Santorini picking you up from the airport and taking around the whole island.

We gladly do it for those who can’t leave Greece without seeing the most popular and romantic island of the world.

Although Santorini is not a huge island, during the peak season and on the days when many cruise ships have it in their program, it will take you longer to visit different popular places, including wineries.

When you choose to explore Santorini in less crowded season, you’ll see much more during your Santorini private tour and will be less tired at the end.

Winter in Santorini

Considering visiting Santorini in winter have in mind that there’s air connection only to Athens (it might not be regular) and there are no international flights at this time of the year.

The days are short and the nights are long.

Only slow ferryboats travel from Athens (from Piraeus port) to Santorini and back, and there’s no connection to Rhodes, Crete or other islands around.

Winter is the most quiet time in Santorini.

Most of the locals are travelling to other parts of the world being on vacation, and that’s when you can be on the island almost on your own.

Winter in Santorini is good only for those who need an escape, although it’s quite freezing due to the wind and it may rain a lot.

The beach resorts are usually closed in winter, so you can choose from a limited choice of accommodation units open.

Most of them are located in Fira.

Fira, in fact, is the center of any kind of life in the island during winter months.

Most of the restaurants and taverns stay closed for winter, so mainly you’ll have to choose between fast food and buying your food at a supermarket.

The views, though, still stay wonderful, and empty Santorini has it’s own charm and is totally free of crowds.

The Museums and sites close early in winter, so plan your day accordingly.

Winters are usually rainy and very humid.

On a sunny day it’s nice to walk around the local villages like Firostefani, Messaria, Emborio, Pyrgos. If it rains – go to one of the Museums or to Akrotiri!

Ancient Thira archaeological site is closed in winter due to weather conditions.

Best Time To Visit Santorini – And Why To Avoid August

The best time to visit Santorini is between May and October, but avoid August in Santorini if you don't like crowds. If you're looking for the best time to go to Santorini, this month by month guide will help.

August is marked in red as this is the most crowded time to visit Santorini. June and October are marked in green as these months have the best balance of lower crowds with pleasant weather and are ideal times to go to Santorini.

Beautiful Santorini and when to go

Perfectly positioned in the South Aegean Sea lies the idyllic Greek island of Santorini. Most famous for its iconic white-washed and blue-topped buildings, this pretty island has long been a tourist hotspot.

When is the best time to visit Santorini though?

It depends what you are after. Do you want to visit Santorini in the low season when it's cheaper? Do you want to go to Santorini for the best weather? Do you want to travel to Santorini when there's fewer tourists?

In this Santorini Travel Guide I'm going to offer my perspective from living in Greece to help you decide when is the best time to go to Santorini for your next vacation.

Note: I've visited Santorini twice – Once in early November, and once in July. Out of these two, I felt the best time for Santorini was November.

Overall, with my experiences of travel in the Cyclades islands in Greece , I think that June would perhaps be the perfect time go go to Santorini.

Santorini Weather

As with the other Cyclades islands, during the summer (June – September) Santorini has a dry Mediterranean climate with hot, sunny days and slightly cooler nights. The hottest months are August in particular and July. A slight haze in the air means that sunset photos are not as clear as those taken in off season months.

The winter weather on the other hand is much cooler, and while there is no rainy season as such, rains can be expected from mid October onwards. The coldest months are January and February, and on very rare years, snow might also fall – but it never lasts for long!

Best time to visit Santorini

Santorini attracts over 1.5 million tourists annually, which is quite a lot considering how small the island is!

Most head there during the peak summer months of July and August. Due to the popularity of visiting at this time, you might be forgiven for instantly assuming this was the best time to visit Santorini, but this is not necessarily the case.

If you're planning a trip to Santorini, you'll want to choose your date more carefully. Read on for a month by month breakdown on when is the best time to travel to Santorini.

In each section, I lay out the pros and cons for each month, balancing things such as the best weather to visit Santorini against the months when the Cycladic island is at its busiest.

Visiting Santorini in January

January is off-peak season, and it also has few tourists. You can expect sunshine, but may need to pack a sweater or two to keep warm. You may also experience a little light rain.

Not all the tourist facilities will be open, and many hotels may be closed, but Santorini is gradually transforming into a year through travel destination. You will always find places to eat and drink – Lucky's Souvlaki in Thira never seems to close!

January is probably the best time of year to visit Santorini on a budget for backpackers who might not care that everything is not open yet.

Bonus for going to Santorini in January – Probably the month with the least visitors!

Downside for traveling to Santorini in January – Forget about swimming!

Visiting Santorini in February

February is a month much like January when it comes to Santorini. The water is still too cool to swim, and there can be a bit of a sea breeze.

On the plus side things will be much cheaper and you will still find restaurants open in some of the main tourist areas.

Bonus for spending time in Santorini in February – A few more tourist facilities open. Still low on visitors.

Downside of Santorini in February  – Swimming is still not really possible.

Visiting Santorini in March

Things start to heat up come March. Well, it might still be a bit chilly by Greek standards, but Northern Europeans will appreciate the difference! Temperatures can reach 20 degrees during the day, although it's still not consistent.

What's great about Santorini in March, is that  hotel prices still remain fairly low. (Check out my guide to sunset hotels in Santorini here ).

It's still firmly in the off-season, but shoulder season is coming, and the first cruise ships start to arrive at the end of the month.

Don't come at this time of year if you are hoping to swim in the sea though, as the water temperatures will still be way too cold for that. Swimming months are between June and September.

However, if you choose a hotel with a heated pool, or if you're okay with just strolling the streets, then March could work for you.

Bonus for visiting Santorini in March  – Still low on visitors, with the possibility of the odd few days of T-Shirt weather!

Downside for visiting Santorini in March  – You've still got to be pretty crazy to swim – but don't let me stop you!

Visiting Santorini in April

April is still classed as low season, so you can grab yourself some serious deals when it comes to flights and accommodation options. The only exception will be the days around Greek Easter which varies every year.

While it won't be as warm as in those peak summer months, it will still feel relatively hot – T-shirt weather for non-Greeks most likely!

If you've endured a long and cold winter, and want some cheap sunshine, then April could be the month for you.

Bonus for visiting Santorini in April  – Some great deals on flights and hotels outside of Easter. The weather is warming up nicely!

Downside for visiting Santorini in April  – The only real downside is the weather isn't 100% reliable as of yet. Other than that, a pretty good month to visit Santorini!

Visiting Santorini in May

Excellent weather runs from around May to the end of November, although you can still expect warm and sunny days outside of this time period as well.

May is a great time to visit Santorini if you want to get there when things are warming up, but when it still has a quiet old-town feel to it. You can check out some interesting day trips from Santorini to enjoy here .

Bonus for visiting Santorini in May  – The May weather heralds the beginning of the good weather months. The sea may (for the brave) be warm enough to swim in.

Downside for visiting Santorini in May  – No real downsides to visiting in May, other than the sea perhaps being not comfortably warm yet.

Visiting Santorini in June

The high season runs from around June to September. At the start of June, things are only just beginning to get really busy. So it might be a good time to visit if you still want to dodge the crowds but also want that summer sun.

Bonus for visiting Santorini in June  – One of the best months to visit Santorini. The first few weeks are still low(ish) on tourists, and the waters around popular beaches such as Red Beach on Santorini are now warm enough to take a swim.

Downside for visiting Santorini in June  – None really.

Visiting Santorini in July + August

Two words sum up Santorini in July and August – busy and hot. High temperatures can hit 35 degrees, and everyone seems to have had the idea of visiting at the same time.

In my opinion, it's not really pleasant at this time of the year. The beauty of Santorini is best experienced in quieter times, and who wants to try and elbow people out of the way in order to get the best sunset spot?

Now of course, I totally get that some people don't have a choice but to visit Santorini in July and August due to work leave, school vacations and the like. You have been warned though!

You are going to want to book your hotels and flights WAY in advance if you want anything resembling a good deal if you are determined to visit Santorini during this period.

Bonus for visiting Santorini in July and August  – I don't want to sound negative, but there really is no upside of visiting Santorini in July and August. Do yourself a favour, and pick some other months! This is not the best time to visit Santorini in my opinion.

Downside for visiting Santorini in July and August  – As mentioned – tourist hordes, pricey flights, hot weather (too hot), insanely priced accommodation, crowded beaches. Should I go on?

Also, the infamous Meltemi which affects the Greek islands in the Cyclades occurs at this time. It can get very windy during this period!

Visiting Santorini in September

Things start to revert back to normality in September. It's still busy, but not as crazy as July and August, and you can almost sense the sigh of relief in the air that Santorini has got over the high season rush again!

This month is a good time to visit if you want to grab some late summer sun. The Meltemi wind has also eased off, and weather-wise, September is a near perfect time of year. Early September has great weather overall, and its a great month for wine tasting and boat tours.

Bonus for visiting Santorini in September  – Fewer tourists than peak season. Hotels coming back down in price. Weather and sea still warm, and lots of sunny weather.

Downside for visiting Santorini in September  – None really, although later September is better to avoid the holiday cross-over with the early parts of the month.

Visiting Santorini in October

October marks the start of the low season, so it can be one of the best times to visit Santorini if you want to save money on your hotel. You'll find warm weather in early October, but cool evenings which makes it a lot more comfortable for sightseeing.

The crowds are also thinner, and you'll often have a slice of beach to yourself. Is it warm enough at that time of year? Just – but perhaps not 100% reliable especially in late October.

Bonus for visiting Santorini in October  – Pick up some nice deals on hotels in Santorini and flights. Still warm for the time of year.

Downside for visiting Santorini in October  – Some businesses starting to close for the year towards the end of the month.

Visiting Santorini in November / December

November and December used to be a very quiet time but it is actually rising in popularity. So much so that many restaurants are choosing to remain open all year round.

Hotel prices are still slashed and the sun still shines (with a little rain from time to time), so it can be a good month if you want to escape the winter cold.

I visited Santorini in November a couple of years back, and found the weather to be great at that time of year. It was also the ideal month to take the walk from Fira to Oia along the caldera. The heat of July when we revisited in 2020 did not encourage me to take the same hike!

Another observation, is that the caldera views seemed clearer in November than they did in July. Perhaps because the wind was less pronounced and didn't make the air so hazy.

Santorini in Winter

Greek islands have traditionally been summer time only travel destinations. With increasing numbers of tourists though, Santorini island is slowly developing as a year around destination.

Visiting Santorini in winter has several advantages. Firstly, it is a lot cheaper to stay at hotels in Santorini in the winter than in the summer.

Additionally, it is also easier to find accommodation in Santorini during the winter months. The biggest bonus though, is that there are far fewer other tourists.

If you are planning to go to Santorini in the winter however, you need to keep some things in mind. Whilst there will be some bars and restaurants open, many businesses will still close down for those winter months in Santorini.

You'll also not find a nightclub open between November and March. The beach resort areas such as Kamari may also be virtually closed.

Personally, I loved travelling to Santorini in November. I was maybe lucky with the climate and weather, but really enjoyed all those great views with none of the crowds to match!

FAQ about the best time to go to Santorini Greece

Here are some commonly asked questions about visiting Santorini at different times of the year.

When should you avoid Santorini?

If you can choose to visit Greece whenever you want, avoid going to Santorini in August at all costs! August in Santorini is ridiculously crowded, with people everywhere you turn. The main streets of Fira and Oia are so full of tourists that it can be hard to move.

What is the best month to visit Santorini?

The best month to go to Santorini in terms of good weather and fewer tourists would be a choice between June and October. It's probably best to avoid Santorini in August if you don't like crowds.

How many days do you need in Santorini?

Santorini is a relatively small island, and you could easily see the main highlights and attractions within 2 or 3 days. 

Is Santorini or Mykonos better?

It depends what you are after. Santorini has better places to enjoy the sunset, and a number of pretty towns and villages to walk around. Mykonos on the other hand has far better beaches and nightlife.

Which side of Santorini is better?

The west side of Santorini is the better place to stay if you want to experience the Santorini sunset and have easy access to either Oia or Fira at night. Budget travelers might prefer the east side as it has cheaper places to stay.

Hi Dave, Appreiciate all of the great informoation. We are visiting Santorini last week of April and wondered which area is the best to stay? We are there for 3 nights, no car. Thank you in advance!

Definitely Fira for this time of year. It’s Santorini’s capital so has all the facilities you need. Oia will feel a little like a ghost town in April, and the coastal towns won’t be open yet in terms of places to eat.

Hi Dave. I don’t like to walk when it is too hot. Hence thinking of visiting end of September, so that the water was warm enough to swim, and temperature not too high and let us enjoy walk around the island. Would that be a good idea to visit end of September or better to come early September?

Mid to end September would be. good time to visit as the weather in Santorini would still be warm enough to swim, but very far away from the peak temperatures of July and August.

Do you think there will be enough to do on Santorini mid to late October for 3 days. Do you think we will be able to some water excursions? Thank You. Unfortunately I can’t depart any earlier. Also planning on hitting Athens on the way home and spending 5 nights w possible day trip.

Dave read your blogs on Santorini but could you help with this question as I have not been able to address it my self. Our cruise ship arrives in Sept 2019 for day we will be tendered off how can we get to Firá and Ora without using cable car either way or walking as we are 70 years old. I have heard there is a boat to another part of coast where transport is available but the return journey is not available. Barry

Hi Barry, You can get water taxis from where the cruise boat will be to Amoudi Bay below Oia. Rumour has it you can now book these on board your cruise boat, If not, it’s all pretty straight forward once you get there (turn left at the tender dock). Unfortunately, the decision most people take is to get the water taxi as described, see Oia, and then bus down to Fira. From there, getting the cable car back down to ground level. (I think there may even be a ticket deal which includes water taxi, bus, and cable car). If the cable car and walking is not an option for you, then you would most likely have to stay in Oia, and then get a return water taxi – however, I have no solid information on this. You’d have to ask on the day,or get in contact with your cruise ship company.

Hoping to visit Santorini end of October to the start of November for our honeymoon. I wanted to stay a few nights in Imerovigli and a few nights in Oia. Can we still see the sunset here this time of year? Weatherwise, does it get super chilly in the evenings? It seems like most restaurants are outdoors so just wanted to know if its too chilly to even sit outside?

Hi! In October it can get chilly at night, but only so much as a light jacket would be needed. You might find at that time of year that restaurants have some mini-heaters outside if they are needed. There are good sunsets at all times of year, and we had some fantastic one when visiting in November. I’d questions swapping hotels between two places in Santorini – I don’t think it’s neccessary. Also, I’m not sure how long you are planning to spend in Santorini, but 3 or 4 days would be the max for most people. Have a great trip to Greece!

hi Dave, We are planning a trip to Greece in May, 2020. Traveling from Raleigh, North Carolina to Athens and then same day flight to Santorini. On one of your posts you recommended Aegean Airlines but they only have flying dates thru March, 2020 so it is hard to plan without knowing flight times. There are two flights we can take to get us to Athens. One lands at 10:00am and the other at 1:45pm. Would it be better to take the one that lands early in Athens? Will there be several choices of flight times to Santorini? We don’t want to miss out if there are only morning flights and we land in Athens after they have all left. Thanks for your help.

Hi Holly, They may not release next season’s flights until September unfortunately. I would say to land at the earlier time to give you more options. I think it would be inconceivable that no flights at all would be running, but we won’t know for sure until later. I can recommend a few boutique hotels in Fira, close to both the winery and the restaurant. Also, I’ve recommended a couple of hotels in Imerovigli, if you want a quieter location, but some people will need to rely on some form of transportation.

Why Go To Santorini

A massive volcanic eruption around 1650 B.C. forced the center of what was then a single island to implode and succumb to the sea. Some say that this was the original home of the lost city of Atlantis, which long ago disappeared into the ocean's depths. Whatever remains of this mythological metropolis is now guarded by beautiful beaches and stately whitewashed homes. Today, Santorini consists of two inhabited islands and several islets. Most visitors spend their time on Thira (the archipelago's largest island), which is home to Santorini's major towns, including Fira and Oia. Sleepy Thirassia makes for a relaxing daytrip too. And don't count out the quieter islands: Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are worth exploring.

Your first order of business in Santorini is to hit the colorful beaches – the black and red sands make for a memorable visit. Next up, indulge in the archaeological delights of the impressively preserved Ancient Akrotiri  or hike to Ancient Thera to see the ruins of three empires, including the Romans. From there, catch a breathtaking view of the caldera, a brilliant turquoise pool of water that serves as the nucleus for the varied isles of this archipelago. Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Santorini is from September to October and April to May when the weather is warm and the crowds are scarce. Like all of the Cyclades, Santorini welcomes the most visitors during the summer, so you'll need to make your reservations months in advance if you plan on visiting anytime from June through August. Looking for a bargain? Try winter, when room rates tend to plummet. Keep in mind that this season's average highs only reach the 50s (not good for sunbathing) and the region sees plenty of precipitation. However, all that rain does make for a very flowery (and warm) spring season. Crowds will be at a low in the spring as well, though tourists will begin invading the islands come May.

What You Need to Know

Drink up Santorini's rich volcanic soil is ideal for growing grapes, making wine the beverage of choice here. Head to a local taverna to try some of the best.

Don't go to the beach barefoot Santorini's beaches primarily made up of small rocks instead of sand, making them extremely hot after a couple hours in the sun. To avoid burns, make sure to wear sandals or water shoes.

Santorini isn't all cliffs The pictures you see of Santorini situated high on the cliffs are actually on the west coast of the island. The east coast, including Kamari and Perissa, are generally flat.

How to Save Money in Santorini

Vacation in the shoulder seasons  The fall and spring are known for warm weather, but not as many tourists take advantage of it compared to summer. You can find some great deals on hotels if you skirt the summer crowds.

Hungry? Head inland While the thought of munching on fresh Greek fare beachfront or cliffside is no doubt tempting, these restaurants may charge higher prices solely for the location. Definitely take advantage of these scenic restaurants, but balance it out by heading inland, where you'll likely find more budget-friendly menus. 

Stay on the east coast  Hotels along the caldera in towns like the popular Oia tend to attract the most travelers, especially honeymooners. You'll find much more reasonably priced rooms in southeastern towns like Kamari and Perissa.

Culture & Customs

Greek is the official language, though considering the large influx of visitors the island receives (as many as 10,000 cruise ship tourists alone come ashore daily), you're more likely to run into English-speaking Greeks than not, especially in tourist areas. Understanding body language here though is key. Be very aware of your gestures. For example, using the thumb and index finger to signal "OK" is offensive, as is holding up your palm to anyone. If you want to wave goodbye, make sure your palm is facing you. As for indicating nodding your head to indicate 'yes' and shaking your head to indicate 'no.' Greeks do it differently. A slight downward means 'yes' while a slight upward nod means 'no.' These gestures are often subtle and quick, making it hard for foreigners to understand. The best thing to do is avoid trying to communicate with gestures here to avoid getting lost in body language translation.

Greeks are known to be very friendly, especially when meeting new people. When meeting a Greek in a social situation, shaking hands is customary. Two kisses, one exchanged on each cheek, is the norm when with acquaintances. Greeks tend to be very open and become deeply engaged when in conversation. They have also been known to get personal, fast. If you're uncomfortable with the dialogue, such as talking about sensitive subjects such as politics or if you're being asked too personal questions, simply try to change the subject. Lateness is also common here. If you have plans with Greeks, expect them to be at least 15 minutes late. 

Shorts and T-shirts are acceptable when walking around the towns or the beaches, some of which are clothing optional. Dress continues to be casual even in restaurants, but Greeks tend to dress up a little more nicely when dining out in the evenings. Other than on the beach, never waltz into a restaurant or public space in your bathing suit or barefoot, even along a beachfront promenade. 

Santorini's currency is the euro. Since the euro to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check what the current exchange rate is before you go. Major credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops. When eating at a restaurant, a service charge may be included. As such, tipping isn't commonplace. Also, keep in mind the plumbing system in Santorini is not stellar – when at a hotel or restaurant, throw any used toilet paper in the waste basket rather than flushing it down the toilet to avoid any potentially embarrassing flooding situations.

What to Eat

While in Santorini, take full advantage of the fresh Greek fare. The island's climate in combination with its volcanic soil enhance flavors of the fruits and vegetables grown here. As such, Santorini has made a name for itself in the wine community, making a visit to one of the island's wineries a top attraction. In addition to delectable grapes, make sure cherry tomatoes (especially sun-dried), capers and white eggplant are part of one or more of your meals during your time in Santorini. The sweetness and white color of the eggplants here are a direct result of being grown in volcanic soil. Cherry tomatoes are another fruit that can attribute their taste to the unique soil. If you like eggplant, then you'll no doubt enjoy moussaka , a Greek-style lasagna that features layered eggplant, minced meat, fixins and spices topped with béchamel sauce. Other must-try Greek specialties include anything with olives and olive oil, especially a traditional Greek salad, as well as fava, a traditional dip made of fava bean puree.

Greeks are all about their dips. Along with fava and the famous tzatziki sauce (yogurt, cucumber and garlic), another must-try and uber-traditional dip is taramasalata, made from smoked fish roe and mixed with olive oil and lemon juice. Other popular small bites include dolmades and keftedes . Regularly served before meals, dolmades are seasoned rice often mixed with meat or vegetables and wrapped entirely in a grape or vine leaf. Keftedes are fritters commonly mixed with cherry tomatoes (tomatokeftedes) or grated zucchini (kolokithokeftedes). If you're after something heartier, you're in luck: The island, as well as the whole of Greece, have a penchant for grilled meats. Souvlaki, or seasoned skewered meat, often topped with tzatziki, can be found all over. Octopus, which you'll likely find hanging by its tentacles outside seaside tavernas, are also popular. And, of course, you can't leave without grabbing a gyro. Whatever you choose to eat, make room for dessert – baklava , a filo pastry layered with honey and ground nuts and loukoumades , or deep-fried donut holes sprinkled with hot honey and cinnamon, are local favorites.

You can find everything from quick gyros to casual eateries to upscale restaurants throughout Santorini. Head to Restaurant 1800 in Oia for fine dining and expertly presented Mediterranean cuisine. If you can, snag a table on the roof to enjoy sweeping views of the island's cliffs. Selene is another upscale option, conveniently located in Pyrgros, which houses a number of wineries. In Fira, the hundreds-year-old Taverna Nikolas is as traditional as it gets, offering classic Greek dishes at affordable prices. For a little romance, enjoy a candle-lit dinner at the edge of the caldera at Ambrosia .

Santorini is pretty safe. Travelers report feeling comfortable walking around the streets both day and night. Even pickpocketing is few and far between here. In terms of getting around, there are not many sidewalks in Santorini, so be careful when walking the streets as you may need to dodge the occasional wayward, speedy scooter. Use caution when navigating Santorini's beaches as well. Most of if not all of the beaches are composed of small rocks rather than sand, and during the summer, can become too hot for bare feet to touch. Bring with you sandals to wear on the sand or water shoes to avoid burns. Tap water here is not safe to drink. 

Getting Around Santorini

The best way to get around Santorini is on foot or by bus. You'll see that it's easy to walk around the tiny seaside towns, but the bus is best to get from one town to another. There are KTEL bus routes from Fira (the capital city) to many different destinations around the main island. KTEL also services the Santorini (Thira) Island National Airport (JTR), but you might find it easier to rely on a cab to get you into town. If you're planning to do a little island hopping, you can catch a ferry from Athinios (about 5 miles south of Fira).

Entry & Exit Requirements

To enter Greece, you must have a passport that will be valid for your stay and for at least six months after. You won't need a visa, however, unless you're planning to stay longer than 90 days. Visit the U.S. State Department's website for more information on entry and exit requirements.

The neighborhood of Oia  is what you often see in photos of Santorini. The neighborhood is filled to the brim with white- and pastel-colored buildings cascading down cliffsides. Considering its popularity and bounty of luxurious hotels, staying here will cost you a pretty penny.

Santorini  is a small Greek island that has become one of the most popular  travel destinations  all over the world.

Many celebrities visit the island every year and it has some of the most unique and  luxurious hotels  on the planet.

b. Being close to the famous Santorini beaches (much cheaper, but you won’t be having the famous views you see all over instagram)

Booking.com   is the best site to book hotels for Santorini (and it’s the one that even the Greeks use…).

It is super safe , with real reviews and even the possibility to cancel your booking if you change your mind.

If you want the unique  views of caldera and the volcano  that Santorini is famous for, then you should stay at  Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli  or  Oia …and also pay the price as these are super expensive hotels.

Get prepared for 3-4 figures per night but also expect to have one of the best views in the world with celebrity style services.

Recently, some very impressive hotels have also been built in  Akrotiri village .

None of these towns are close to the sea though.

All the hotels there, are hanging from a massive cliff and most have spectacular views and stunning swimming pools.

But no access to a beach unfortunately.

However, if you don’t want to stay in any of the places that you’ve seen in the tourist guides and you want to relax by the sea you can stay at  Kamari  ,   Perivolos ,   Perissa  towns.

These beach side towns of Santorini have amazing hotels in much more reasonable prices.

If you stay at a  beach hotel in Santorini  you get more for your money, but you don’t have the amazing famous volcano views and sunsets (which you can visit anytime you want by the way…).

I also recommend that you have a look at the very picturesque villages of  Emporio  and  Pyrgos .

Especially  Pyrgos  has some very nice views on the other side of the island (not the caldera and the volcano though) but you will be enjoying some unique sunsets away from the tourist crowds.

If you are a  famliy with kids  then I strongly recommend you stay at  Kamari  beach as it is the best for kids with lots of amenities, restaurants in walking distance and a massive beach that can be  every kid’s dream!

This is the rule of thumb to remember for when searching the best area to stay in Santorini:

Fira:   the capital of the island, nightclubs, shops, restaurants, buzz

Firostefani:  very seclusive and relaxing but still very close to Fira for shops etc

Oia:   the most famous and probably the most romantic place to stay in Santorini, not that many shops, no nightlife, but really relaxing atmosphere and some amazing restaurants. Expect tons of tourist masses though, which during the sunset time are everywhere (on the roofs, on the streets, on the walls etc).

Imerovigli:   amazing views to the caldera, seclusive, not touristic and still close to Fira where all the buzz and shopping is.

Perissa  ,  Perivolos ,  Kamari : no views to the volcano but walking distance to the  best beaches of Santorini .

4. When Is The Best Time to Visit Santorini ?

High season  in Santorini starts from  April and ends in October.

Obviously the island is extremely busy during these months but especially in  July, August and September  you will definitely feel the tourist masses…

I have visited the island in so many different periods and months within a year and I figured out what could be the best time to enjoy the most of the island:

The  best time to visit Santorini  is late September or early October !

The weather will still be fine and not too hot (around 25-30 C) , the sea waters will still be warm (from the summer heat) and most of the tourists would be gone! Happy Days!

That doesn’t mean there is nobody on the island.

Remember: it’s still Santorini!

June  is also a very good month to visit Santorini because it’s still early summer , the weather is amazing (though it can get pretty hot with more than 35C sometimes) and the big masses of tourists haven’t arrived yet.

I wouldn’t recommend  May  though because even though the weather is still very good , the sea water will be a bit chilly and you may not enjoy the beach that much.

In terms of how crowded the island will be,  here is a rough guide :

January :  10% crowded – ( Low Season  – many restaurants, hotels and businesses will be closed, beaches will be empty but the island is not “dead”)

February :  10% crowded – ( Low Season  – many restaurants, hotels and businesses will be closed, beaches will be empty but the island is not “dead”)

March :  20% crowded – ( Low Season  –but slightly more people start to visit the island as the high season approaches, many restaurants, hotels and businesses will be closed or just about to open, beaches will probably be empty but the island is definitely not “dead”)

April :  40% crowded – ( High Season  – the beggining of the high season and most restaurants, beach bars, cafes and businesses open in April as it is also the  Greek Easter  and lots of Greeks visit the island to start preparing for the high season)

May :  70% crowded – ( High Season  – All of the businesses of the island will be 100% open and operational but the island is still not full, the beaches are getting busier every day and the weather is awesome)

June :  90% crowded – ( High Season  – almost at full capacity but not yet super busy…everything will be open and super fun!)

July:  100% crowded – ( High Season  – the heart of the high season and when the island gets super busy and crowded, but still you will have a great time while the weather is super hot – do expect to spend most of your time on the beach or the swimming pool – not as busy as in August though)

August:  110% crowded – ( High Season  – the busiest month for Santorini, try to avoid if possible because everything becomes more complicated adn takes more time)

September :  90% crowded – ( HIgh Season  –  it will still feel like the long tail of Aigust some times but it will get less busy at the end of the month – weather still feels like summer! See also below)

October :  70% crowded ( High Season  – the weather gets colder but you can still possibly enjoy a swim in the sea or the pool – for many of the businesses October is their last operational month)

November:  30% crowded ( Low Season  – the early days of winter and the month where the weather gets considerably colder – many businesses, hotels and restaurants might be closed)

December:  10% crowded ( Low Season  – the heart of the low season and one of the coldest months in Santorini, no swimming, many closed businesses but always an amazing landscape and wild beauty)

5. How To Get To Santorini ?

If you live anywhere  outside of Europe  (and definuitely if you are from the US) you have to fly to Athens first (the capital of Greece) and then take either  a 40mins flight from Athens to Santorini  or a  5 to 8 hours ferry  (there is a slow/cheap ferry and a faster/more expensive ferry from Athens to Santorini).

If you live in Europe, there are direct flights from some European cities to Santorini.

Most of these direct flights to Santorini run seasonally  between May-October  as this the hot season for Santorini.

If you take a direct flight to Santorini, you won’t see any of  Athens  which is the biggest Greek city and undoubtedly the city with the most archaeological and cultural interest in Greece and in Europe.

If you are already in Athens you can just book your ferry tickets to Santorini from  Ferryhopper .

In my honest opinion, a ferry can be nice if it’s your first time in Greece, as you get to see the beautiful blue waters of the  Aegean Sea  but you will be wasting 5-8hrs on the boat which you could better spend on Santorini.

Booking.com Flights   has all the available  flight options  for Santorini and it will show you all the available flights from  Athens to Santorini  or from any other major European cities to Santorini.

Santorini’s airport code is JTR (Santorini’s official name is Thira or Thera).

In order to reach Santorini via ferry boat, you can use the  Ferryhopper   website, which gives you the updated prices and schedules for all ferries connecting  Athens with Santorini .

7. Are There Any Direct Flights to Santorini ?

There are no direct flights to Santorini from the USA, Canada or Australia.

But there are direct flights to Santorini from almost all major European cities like Paris, London, Amsterdam, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome.

VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW:  The direct flights from major European cities to Santorini DO NOT RUN ALL YEAR ROUND but only between May and October usually. If you are visiting Santorini in the low season (November-April) you might only have the option to fly to Athens and then take a 45mins flight to Santorini (check  Booking.com Flights  for all the available options)

So, basically your options are:

• Fly to a major European city and then take a direct flight to Santorini (check  Booking.com Flights )
• Fly to Athens (Greece’s capital) and then take either a 5-8hrs ferry ( book it here ) or a direct 45mins direct flight to Santorini ( book it here )

8. What Is The Caldera?

Santorini  is a volcanic island.

To be more precise it is an active volcano!

Thousands of years ago the centre part of the island collapsed into the sea creating a unique open sea lagoon.

Caldera  is the sea lagoon that has been created since then.

If you want to stay at an area overlooking the caldera and the famous volcano views with the amazing sunsets, then get you should stay at one of the following areas:

• Firostefani

VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW:  if you are staying at Perissa, Perivolos or Kamari you won’t have the famous views but you will be close to the beaches. If you have a caldera view then you won’t be close the beaches. Unfortuantely, you cannot have both in Santorini!

9. How Many Days Should You Spend in Santorini?

Santorini  is a relatively small Greek island but there are so many   things to see and do  that the time will never be enough!

That applies to many of the   best islands in Greece  too, as they are all amazing destinations.

My suggestion is that no matter how many days you will spend in Greece or on the greek islands in particular, try to spend 50% of your time in Santorini. In reality, you need at least 4 nights in Santorini.

So, if you want to stay 10 days in Greece, try to spend at least 5 days in Santorini and then visit other Greek islands. You won’t regret it…

Is a Day Trip from Athens to Santorini possible?

Yes, it is.

Also, a day trip from Athens to Cairo is possible, to check the pyramids.

That doesn’t mean you should do it, though !

Jokes aside, there is no point of rushing such a day trip.

It will extremely tiring, expensive and at the end you would have only ticked a box on your to do list.

Take things easy and enjoy every trip you make, if possible.

It is better to explore more of Athens if you only have 1 day spare , than visiting Santorini in a rush.

There are also other amazing daytrips you can do from Athens, where you can actually visit small islands that are on 1-hr ferry trip from Athens (like Hydra, Spetses or Poros). These are all lovely places and perfect locations for a daytrip from Athens.

10. Santorini or Mykonos ?

This is a dilemma that any people have.

They are both amazing islands but:

Mykonos  is quite a party island with very nice and long sandy beaches (no sandy beaches in Santorini unfortunately).

It’s been a celebrities holiday place since the 60’s and some of the best summer clubs and bars of Europe are there. It is a very beautiful place indeed and it can also be a family and relaxing place.

You don’t have  to go the parties and the clubs.

Think of Mykonos like the “Ibiza of Greece” even though there are some quiet areas on the island to be honest.

Santorini  is a completely different place. A more romantic one. A more relaxing one.

It’s a place where you will drink amazing wine but you won’t necessarily get drunk!

However, there is still some serious  nightlife in Santorini   as well.

So, to sum it up:

• If you only have 3-4 days for greek islands then spend all of them in Santorini
• If it’s your first time in Greece then try to visit both but give priority to Santorini as the landscape is unique
• If you want golden sand beaches then Mykonos has much better beaches than Santorini
• If you want proper clubbing and nightlife then Mykonos is much better than Santorini (though  Santorini’s nightlife  is really good too)
• If you want to be closer to Athens then Mykonos is closer to Athens
• If you want to be surrounded by world class celebrities then Mykonos is your place
• If you are interested in shopping then Mykonos is better
• If you want to have more options in restaurants then Mykonos is better
• If you only care about adventurous  things to do  then Santorini is your place
• If you are interested in amazing wine and wineries then Santorini is your place
• If you want a more romantic place then Santorini is your ideal destination

11. Best Greek Islands Near Santorini

With all those international direct flights to Santorini , you can certainly use the island for some greek island hopping!

There are many greek islands you can visit from Santorini but not all are connected with a ferry boat or a flight, so you have to limit your options.

These are the greek islands you can visit from Santorini:

• Anafi  (the only one that a daytrip is possible)
• Ios  (2hrs ferry from Santorini)
• Naxos  (3 hrs ferry from Santorini)
• Mykonos  (2 hrs ferry from Santorini)
• Folegandros  (1 hr ferry from Santorini)
• Milos  (2 hrs ferry from Santorini)
• Paros  (2 hrs ferry from Santorini)

Unfortunately,  IT IS NOT ADVISABLE  to visit the following islands from Santorini:

• Crete  (it is a very big island and you need at least a week and a car to go around)
• Corfu  (it’s on the other side of Greece and you need to go through Athens and then take another flight)
• Zakynthos/Zante  (same as Corfu)
• Rhodes  (again, very far away and a pretty big island where you need to spend at least a week)

Unfortunately  the only way to visit other greek islands  from Santorini (apart from a flight that runs only in the summer months between Santorini-Mykonos and not every day) is to take a ferry boat.

The best way to plan your greek island hopping is to check the ferry timetables online and then plan ahead (it is also advisable to book the tickets online before you arrive in Santorini because they sell out in the hot summer season May-September):

12. Best Sunset Views in Santorini

Santorini’s  sunset are famous all over the world.

The Best Sunset Views are at the following locations which overlook the caldera as well and if that is your priority then you should definitely stay at one of them:

You should always have in mind that these areas are also the most expensive in terms of accommodation and restaurants (for a good reason…).

But if you just want to view the most amazing sunsets then there are a few other spots with equally amazing views (with Google Maps links to find them):

• Franco’s Cafe Pyrgos
• Katharos Lounge
• Prophet Ilias Mountain
• Famous heart shaped rock 
• Tranquilo Beach Bar
• Kamari Beach

13. How To Rent A Quad in Santorini ?

Driving a  quad in Santorini  is an extremely fun thing to do and it will definitely give you more flexibility than taking the  local Santorini bus .

But you have to be aware that it is not the safest thing to drive. 

You have to be extremely careful with driving an ATV (or quad as they called) especially during the summer months in Santorini where the island is super crowded.

14. Money in Santorini. Do I Need Cash ?

There is no shortage of ATM cash machines where your VISA and Mastercard can be accepted to withdraw money.

You should always contact your bank to find out what the charges will be.

VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW: 90% of the times your credit or debit card will be accepted at the business you are paying but cash is always the best way to pay in Greece and in Santorini. You should always have some cash with you while in Santorini

The BEST THING you can do (that I have recently discovered) for travel money is to  set up an account with Wise  and just use their Mastercard.

Wise  is used all over the world by millions of people and they have by far the best exchange rates than any bank.

So , these are the things you should know about your money in Santorini:

• There are hundreds of ATMs cash machines on Santorini and you won’t have any issues withdrawing money (euros in particular); there is a daily limit though on how much you can withdraw from a cash machine
• Check with your bank what will the charges be for travel money (or check solutions like  Wise  or Revolut cards which are super reliable and easy to use)
• You should always have some cash with you as some businesses may have “broken card machines”…
• Card machines in Santorini (and in Greece) are chip and pin (not swipe)
• American Express IS NOT ACCEPTED IN GREECE

15. Can I move around with the local buses in Santorini?

The  local buses  in Santorini are really good and it is definitely the  cheapest way  to move around in Santorini.

There are buses that run throughout the island and depending on where you go the ticket costs from 1.80 euros to 2.80 euros (always  pay with cash  – no cards accepted on the buses !) .

16. How To Rent A Car in Santorini ?

Renting a car  in Santorini will give you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace and it is also a much safer option than a  quad .

It is the advice I alwys give to people visitin ghte island for more than 2-3 days.

The  best website to book a car for Santorini is   Rentalcars.com   as it has all the available options and almost all of the rental companeis in Santorini now operate through that. It is safe and super reliable.

Here are a few things to be aware for driving in Santorini:

• Best Website to rent a car in Santorini :  Rentalcars.com
• Driving in Santorini is on the right side of the road (like USA)
• You need an international driver’s license for Santorini and for Greece. If you have an EU license you don’t need an international license as an EU license is accepted everywhere in EU.
• Renting a car could cost you about 40-50 euros per day during the high season (a quad might also cost you around 30-40 euros…)
• Driving in Santorini can be tricky for some people who are not used to narrow roads but in general you shouldn’t worry about it too much
• Parking is an issue on the island (especially in the very touristic areas like Oia and Fira where you could park far away from where you are actually going…)
• DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! That applies to the wineasting you might do while in Santorini. Better take the taxi or the local bus to go back home…(there are lots of police patrols all over the island too)

17. What Are The Best Boat Tours in Santorini ?

A  sunset cruise  or a  volcano cruise  is easily one of the  best things you can do on Santorini .

I always advise people to do a half day cruise as the experience is amazing.

Depending on which one you choose, you may get delicious seafood on board, you may get some tour guiding, you may hop off the active volcano (make sure you bring some trekking shoes and you may also swim at the hot volcanic springs! 

It’s always also advisable to book well in advance online as this guarantees you will get a ticket (especially during the summer months of June-September)

Wine tasting and a guided wine tour  is one of the best things you can do while on Santorini.

20. Shopping in Santorini. Any good?

If you want to  shop …then Fira town is the place to be.

There are hundreds of souvenir shops, art galleries and traditional greek products shops at Fira.

Oia also has a selection of some very interesting art and handcraft shops as well.

It also has  this amazing bookstore but unfortunately it has shut down recently as I found out.

In terms of grocery stores and supermarkets you will find big ones outside of the towns (in Fira mainly) and smaller ones inside the towns.

21. Is Santorini family and kids-friendly? Is it Safe?

Santorini (and Greece) are extremely  kids  and  family friendly .

The best thing you can do while visiting  Santorini with kids  is to stay closer to the beaches of  Perissa ,  Perivolos  and  Kamari   as they all have lots of amenities.

The best thing a kid can do in Santorini is to play at the beach but you have to be careful as the high temperatures of the greek summer need extra skin protection.

Also, the black sand beaches of Perissa and Kamari can get very hot during mid-day and that requires shoes or flip flops to be worn all the time!

Some of the most exclusive hotels in Santorini , clearly state that they won’t accept kids but it is always impoertant to check that in advance with your hotel if it’s not clear.

You can certainly stay at Firostefani or Fira and Oia but I truly believe a kid would have much more fun if she is closer to the beach.

• Gabbiano Hotel

In regards to how  safe Santorini is , there is little to almost zero crime in general but you should always be careful wherever you travel in the world. Common sense applies to everything and everywhere.

So, there you have them. A  trip to Santorini  can be one of the most amazing experiences in your life so you really need to get well prepared as it can also be costly. It’s extremely easy to book your flights, your ferries, your accomodation and even the things you want to do on the island way in advance. It is highly advisable to book everything before you arrive on the island as Santorini is in high demand the last 20 years and it will keep on being like this for ever. As you’re planning your Greece island hopping adventures , one of the questions you’ll no doubt have is “when is the best time to visit Santorini?”. Not all months are equal.

Best overall time to visit Santorini

Let’s just jump into some generalities. If you look at the broad picture, the best time to visit Santorini is April to June and September to November .

This is effectively the shoulder season of travel and you could say applicable for travel throughout most of the world. This is when the weather is fantastic, the crowds haven’t accumulated yet, and prices are still reasonable.

As a segue to the above, what are the different primary seasons of travel in Santorini and what can you expect?

Low Season (November to April) – This is when the island is at its quietest. Cooler climates swoop in but in general the weather can be unpredictable. The low season is also when many businesses (including hotels, restaurants, and activities) close up and both flight and ferry schedules are reduced. That said,

Shoulder Season (May to June and September to October) – There’s some +/- of weeks here but as you’ve seen in our other travel guides , this is almost always the best time to visit. Weather-wise, it’s not insanely hot yet and the large tourist groups haven’t descended yet. By this point, businesses and transportation have ramped up as well. One thing to consider though is that the water may not be that warm yet.

High Season (late June to early September) – This is high because of the crowds, the temperature, and the prices. Be prepared to sweat a little but also be able to cool off at the beach. Along the lines of whether Santorini is worth it or not , places like Oia for sunset will be incredibly packed but you’ll also find quiet places to explore. Ferries and flights are in full swing at this point and so is the nightlife.

When travelling, you want to make sure you have the best chances of good weather and so it’s worth it to look at a couple of factors that you’ll want to account for as well.

The overall average in Santorini is 64°F (17.8°C) which means you can expect fair temperature throughout the year. That said, there is definitely very much a change from summer to winter.

The coldest months are December to March while the hottest months are June to August.

From a precipitation perspective, Santorini is much like the rest of the Mediterranean area where rainfall predominantly comes in the months of October to March. Afterwards, chances of seeing rain is quite low and in the hottest months, you’re almost guaranteed to not see any at all.

This is a big reason why much of the landscape in Santorini looks quite barren and arid.

The amount of sunshine you get in a day is linked to rain and clouds but also how long the days are from sunrise to sunset.

No surprises here, summers have the most amount of sun.

Longer periods of sunshine coupled with longer days means that you have more hours to work with when planning your trip.

If you have plans to go to the beach to swim, this is a good statistic to know.

The best time for swimming in the Aegean Sea is between July and September when you’re looking at 75°F (24°C) which is comfortable but certainly not like the Caribbean waters.

By Interests

There are travellers going to Santorini with all sorts of goals and occasions in mind. This list certainly isn’t exhaustive but hopefully gives you some guidance.

• Best time for honeymoon – June and September – Prices aren’t as inflated, you get a bit more privacy with smaller crowds, and you get to enjoy fantastic weather.
• Best time for wedding – June and September – Similar to the above, you’ll want to choose a time when the weather is comfortable but at the same time is a time of the year where guests can take time off to come especially for those that have children.
• Best time for the beach – July to September – These are the warmest temperatures for the Aegean Sea
• Best time for hiking – May and October – If you’re hiking from Fira to Oia or other adventure activities, these two shoulder months are really comfortable.
• Best time for sailing – June to September – You want to be on the water when you have nice sunny days and nice temperatures to hit the water.
• Best time for partying – July to early September – This is when you bars and clubs are packed and full of life.
• Best time for photography – All year round – A bit of a cop-out answer but the sunsets are amazing all 12 months and if you’re interested in Bougainvillea flowers, they bloom in early spring until late Autumn which is a wide range.
• Best time for island hopping – mid-May to mid-October – You’ll be relying on ferries which are at its peak schedule from mid May to mid October.

How are the prices of say hotels, restaurants, activities, car rentals, and flights throughout the year? If you’re price-conscious and on a budget, this should help serve as a guide.

Hotels are a big part of the Santorini trip budget. The cheapest months for accommodations are:

• March, April, May, October, and November

If you go even further into low-season, you might notice that many hotels are closed during those months.

Similarly for flights , when the tourism season picks up again, there are great deals in the same above months. That said, many discount airlines such as Ryanair will still have cheap fares in the high season months so make sure you search on Skyscanner .

What is Santorini like month to month?

This might sound a bit harsh but here are a few key dates to try to avoid.

• Greek Easter (April or May) – This is the Orthodox Easter Sunday which changes year to year but usually lands in April. This whole weekend and adjoining week before and after should be avoided as you’ll see an influx of Greeks to the island which will make it busier.
• Bank Holiday/St. Mary’s Day (August 15) – This is a huge Greek national holiday where locals will travel domestically to Santorini. You will definitely want to pre-book everything if travelling around the week before and after this date.
• July and August – High season just isn’t the most pleasant time to go because of the above national holiday and also because everyone else is trying to go these months with the kids out of school. It’s hot, sticky, packed, and expensive.

As a blanket statement, I always recommend that you book Santorini hotels way in advance (pandemic or not). The closer you are to your date, the more likelihood of the property being sold out and/or the prices going up.

Rule of thumb: Book your hotel 6 months in advance or more.

This is especially true for the luxury properties.

3 Day Santorini Itinerary

I’ve always found itineraries to be the best way to help with trip planning. Here’s a jumping-off point for planning your Santorini vacation.

As you might’ve read from our guide on where and how to rent a car in Santorini , there are multiple companies to choose from and locations as well.

Here’s what we recommend.

• The only times you really need to book ahead of time is if you need automatic transmission or you’re booking during one of the dates we suggested you avoid . If this is the case, we recommend 3 to 6 months ahead of time .
• Always start your search with RentalCars so you get a good idea of the prices and availability.
• If you’re renting from one of the big companies, you can see what car rental discount codes are available.
• Local car rental shops in say, Fira, Oia, and Perissa have good availability and can be booked when you arrive.

Whether you’re going from Athens to Santorini or doing a different Greece Island hopping itinerary , the ferry mode of transportation will likely come up in your trip planning.

Overall, there’s surprisingly not a lot of pressure to book ferries way in advance mainly because there’s a ton of capacity especially on the large Blue Star Ferries. This means that you’d actually be fine even booking on the day of travel.

The exception are the Greek holidays (August 15 especially) where it’s a good idea to but if you don’t, it doesn’t mean you won’t find a seat. Also, if you’re looking for specific sleeper cabins or business class, it’s also a good idea to book ahead of time.

How early?: 1-2 months in advance.

As of May 1, 2022, all COVID-19 entry rules have been dropped in Greece.

This means that all travellers, regardless of their country of origin, can enter the country without having to provide COVID-19 documentation (this means either a vaccination, recovery, or test certificate) upon their arrival.

Also, all domestic COVID-19 measures have been dropped as well so COVID-19 documents won’t be checked.

To see most of the island, you need at least 3 days. This will allow you to visit the top attractions, do one of the boat tours, see the epic sunset, and try a couple of restaurants. For a more spread out schedule that is more comprehensive, 5-7 days is recommended.

Between the two islands, Santorini has a more diverse offering of things to see and do with including the varied landscape while Mykonos is best known for its party-scene and beaches. Each island has its advantages but if you were to visit only one, Santorini would have to be your choice.

Fira will have the most number of business open followed by Oia but the smaller towns (including beach towns) will be mostly closed. What’s left open are a few hotels and restaurants. Most luxury hotels are closed.

April to May or October to November are good times for those that are backpacking without a concrete schedule and want to visit Santorini without hotel bookings.

If nightlife is important, go during the peak period but if you’re looking for a balance of meeting new people while also having your own time to explore, June and September are the best times to go.

The peak season of July and August is when the island is most lively, packed with people, and events.

For couples that are looking for comfortable weather and crowds when you can watch a sunset in relative peace and not have to fight for restaurant reservations, late May to early June and late September to early October are awesome.

You can find great deals for hotels and flights during the off season which means October to April.

If you are considering Greek island hopping, you’ll want to make sure you have the most options of flights and ferries. As a result, June to September are the best months.

If you’re travelling as a family with children, June and September are great months to consider because the water is relatively warm for swimming with overall temperatures not as hot and crowds manageable

Generally, restaurants and hotels close between November and March in Santorini.

Speaking about your vacations to Greece , choosing when to travel to Greece comes down to personal preference, and Santorini is no exception. However, regardless of that, and because Santorini is an island, visiting during the winter would not be the wisest choice.

The Greek islands are infamous for being particularly cold and windy. Additionally, due to the small number of permanent residents, they are close to being deserted.

Therefore, it wouldn't be a surprise to find most restaurants and shops that are at their peak during summertime closed through the winter months.

That being said, due to the incredible, raw beauty of the island, there is something to be gained from a winter trip.

Τhe emptiness of the low season months causes a serenity that is difficult to find. So if seclusion is what you're after, then maybe visiting Santorini in the winter is not such a bad idea; in any other scenario, choosing the warmer months is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best option.

On the opposite side, if you choose to visit Santorini during the summer and especially during its high season, which lasts from the end of June to early September, you need to keep in mind that thousands and thousands of people have probably made the same choice as you.

Expectedly, being one of the most popular summer destinations in Greece and the whole world, Santorini can get extremely busy and often overcrowded.

As a result, relaxation, peace, and quiet give way to busy streets, lots of chattering, loud nightlife, and hectic beaches, which can be a no-go for some.

However, if crowds and waiting in line don't matter, and you've imagined your holidays filled with parties that end in the first light of day, you have nothing to worry about.

If you're visiting Santorini with kids and are looking to have a much more calm and more  authentic Greek island experience , crossing off the dead of summer from your list is the best way to go. 

As with everything in life, there is such a thing as a 'happy medium,' and that happy medium should be the one to look for, as it will provide you with a one-of-a-kind, authentic experience without compromising the factor of fun. For us, that happy medium can be found during late spring and early autumn. 

If you choose to visit Santorini in late May or late September to early October, not only will you get to bask in the wonderful sunshine and enjoy good weather, but you will get to explore the island without touching shoulders with thousands of people.

Don't get me wrong, the island will be far from deserted, but it won't be packed to the brim either, which is ideal! And with the perfect climate the Mediterranean is offering, there will be plenty of things to do in Santorini during May, September, and October, so you are not missing out on anything that's happening during the high season.

Between you and me, the beaches of Santorini will probably be even more magical during those months.

Visiting Santorini in November and December

It is no secret that the Greek islands are not considered a winter destination, which stands true for Santorini as well. From early November and through December, Santorini is expectedly very quiet and exudes the energy of a deserted island due to the island getting into its off-season. 

Many restaurants opt to remain closed from October until April. As a result, hotel prices are also reduced, while there are hotels that remain closed during the winter season altogether, such as some of the hotels in Oia and most of the  Santorini beach hotels .

The weather is, of course, very cold. However, the sun still occasionally shines, making the winter chills a bit more bearable.  

Some people claim that early November to late December is the best time to visit Santorini and catch sight of the Caldera . We don't necessarily agree, however, each on their own! It is all a matter of what you're looking for during your vacation in Greece.

Visiting Santorini in January

January is considered the heart of the Greek islands' off-season , and there is little tourist activity. The weather is cold -colder than on the mainland- and although the sun may shine due to Greece being a generally sunny country, you must pack your heavy winter clothes with you.

Again, not all tourist facilities will be open, and some accommodation options will be closed, leaving you with little choice. 

However, you will find some hotels and local shops, and restaurants that will offer you a genuine Greek island life experience that you may not have the opportunity to enjoy amid the summer craze.  

What's more, if you're a backpacker and want to spend your days browsing the fascinating caldera cliffs, January might be a great time to visit Santorini and escape the blazing heat. 

Visiting Santorini in February

Visiting Santorini in February is not much different from visiting Santorini in January. However, February is usually Greece's coldest month, so you should be prepared for really low temperatures and whether that may not resemble the pictures you've seen on Instagram of Greece .

The water will be too cold to swim unless you're an experienced year-long swimmer, and there may be strong winds that will create an uninviting environment; no wine-tasting will be taking place during that month.

But, on the positive aspects, things are a lot cheaper, and you can still find open restaurants in most major tourist areas.  

Suppose you visit Santorini during the winter months . In that case, it is an excellent opportunity to mingle with the welcoming locals who feel like enjoying your time on their island is their responsibility!

Visiting Santorini in March

With March comes the first glimmer of spring. Then, the temperature starts rising at the end of March, the days grow longer, and the sun shines brighter.

While March is still quite chilly by Greek standards, people from northern Europe and other colder countries will love it! In fact, temperatures can sometimes even reach 20 degrees at midday, but this temperature isn't constant. 

What makes Santorini so great in March is that despite the improvement in the weather, the hotel prices remain relatively low. The water is still freezing during the month of March. However, the more daring visitors might try diving in them before marveling at the famous Santorinian sunset. 

Generally, in Santorini, spring brings a beautiful environment with beautiful blooms of flowers and beautiful shades mixing with sea views. The skies are bright, with good conditions for long, relaxing walks. Temperatures at night range between 75-80 °F, with slightly warmer days.  

It is less touristic in the spring and therefore suited for romantic getaways or solo travels. Families seeking quieter may enjoy spring in Santorini . Hotels are less expensive than in summer, and you should be able to get great deals when flying in.

May (along with September, which we will talk about below) is, in our opinion, the best time to visit Santorini to enjoy a genuine Greek island experience without the massive tourist crowds but with the lovely hot weather Greece is known for. May signals the start of the season's great weather!

During May, most days are warm and sunny days as well, while the water of the sea has warmed up enough to be welcoming for visitors. It is still cold, but it is manageable. 

The high season runs between May and September. Therefore, the businesses that didn't open in April will open in May, offering visitors of the island the opportunity to experience Santorini in full force.  

All in all, there is no real disadvantage to visiting Santorini in May that we can think of.

Visiting Santorini in June

Of course, visiting Santorini in the summer is by far the most popular choice for travelers. It is considered by most the most beautiful time for visiting Santorini.

In addition, it allows the island's visitors to enjoy a plethora of activities they couldn't enjoy any other time of the year.

The summer period is hectic, especially in June or July. However, the summer months may be perfect for you, depending on your needs and activities.

Tourist numbers are much bigger in the summer, and therefore, during that time, all types of tours are plentiful, allowing you to get to know the island better, easier, and in a much more fun way.  

Things have started getting very busy in June, and long lines may await you. That being said, June is a beautiful month to visit Santorini. The first few weeks of June are still low in tourist numbers, and the water around famous beaches like Red Beach in Santorini is warm enough for swimming.

Visiting Santorini in July and August

Two words describe Santorini in July and August: busy and warm. High temperatures exceed 35 degrees in the morning, with the nights typically a bit more chilly, giving visitors a refreshing breath. 

The months of July and August are infamously the busiest month for the Greek islands and Santorini in particular, with the island flooding with travelers worldwide. For many, the height of summer is the ultimate time to visit our exotic country, and with good reason. 

However, if you choose July and August for your visit, you must keep in mind that the massive crowds may obstruct your peace, and they may get in the way of enjoying the island to its full potential. 

In our opinion, It's best to visit this beautiful island at a quieter time when the people won't get in the way of the striking sunset views .  

That being said, Santorini is beautiful, and no matter when you get to experience it, you will have the time of your lives, so if your work vacations or school breaks are during those months, grab the opportunity and visit Santorini no matter what!

Visiting Santorini in September

The crowds thin out from the beginning of September, and the island gets back its relaxed vibe. It seems like everything is going back to normal again.

It's still busy but not as crazy as in July and August. Santorini is going through the high season rush again with great ease! Most restaurants are still open during September, serving the few tourists with delicious local dishes.

This month will make an exciting trip to get some summertime sunshine while escaping the hustle and bustle of the high season. 

In early September, Santorini has the best weather , and the Meltemi winds decrease. This is also the perfect time to visit wineries or sail on the water without having the blazing sun burn your skin. However, there is a chance of light rain. Although it is not probable, it is possible that the good weather.  

What's more, in late September, accommodation prices begin to drop, so you may get a great deal and have your trip cost significantly less than what it would cost during the middle of summer.

All accommodation offerings in Santorini get fully booked from early spring, so you should make sure not to leave your reservations for the last minute because there is a high chance you won't find anywhere to stay. Even if you do it, it will be both overpriced and underwhelming. 

Other Greek islands near Santorini for an island-hopping trip

Santorini is located alone at the southernmost point of the Cyclades. Below Santorini are the Cretan Sea and Crete.

Next to Santorini, west and north, are some beautiful and popular islands of the Cyclades, Ios, Sikinos, and Folegandros. To the east is Anafi, while next to Santorini, part of its Caldera is the traditional Thirasia.  

As a result, you can combine your visit to Santorini with a visit to other Greek islands,  such as those on day trips from Santorini , and have the time of your life! Especially if you have many days to spare, it would be ideal to visit as many of them as possible through an island-hopping or sailing adventure.

Our recommendation would be to spend at least three days on the islands of Santorini in order to do it justice.

Santorini is a fascinating island, and aside from Oia , the volcano, the ancient history, and the stunning sunset views, there are plenty of exciting attractions that will keep you occupied for days. 

Again, ideally, the more days you get to spend on the island, the merrier. Of course, ten days would be the absolute dream, but it is understandable that, unfortunately, many people don't have ten days to spend on vacation. 

If need be, you could also spend as few as 24 hours on the island and just get a taste of it. This can happen through a day trip you will indulge in from another island of the Cyclades or if Santorini is one of the stops of your island-hopping trip.

One thing is for sure: you'll be coming back for more as soon as possible.

Summer in Santorini definitely brings the crowds

If you’re drawn to warm weather and bustling crowds, the summer months of June, July, and August might be the best months to visit Santorini—but the crowds are ferocious and consume the popular spots on the island.

All businesses will be open to accommodate the high season, meaning you very well might need to book your reservations months in advance .

During this time, temperatures reach highs of 30°C (86°F), and, depending on your travel preferences, you might either view the island as coming alive with vibrant energy…or bursting at the seams.

The island is indeed fully activated and booming with business. However, this also brings all the crowds possible. If you don’t mind the crowds, summer might be the best time to visit Santorini, but if crowds are your kryptonite, the summer months are probably not the best months to visit Santorini for you.

For us personally, we wouldn’t choose to visit Santorini in the summer if we could avoid it, as crowds make everything more difficult, in our opinion. However, if it’s the only time you are able to travel to Santorini, by all means, go! Santorini is always worth it!

Visiting Santorini in Winter, the Off Season

While the summers of Santorini bulge with crowds galore and booming business, visiting the island during the winter months offers a unique and peaceful experience that can certainly be appealing— but it comes with a trade off.

Yes, the crowds dissipate and the pace of life slows down. If you love the idea of fewer visitors and the chance to enjoy Santorini’s breathtaking vistas and iconic landmarks without the crowds, December might be the best month to visit Santorini for you.

Room rates are likely to be cheapest during this time as well.

But winter can also come with some downsides. The weather is cooler and, depending on your luck (or lack thereof), you might have rainy days.

Most businesses also close down during this time, as locals take time off during the off season, which can certainly affect how you navigate your Santorini trip.

But for the opportunity to have the picturesque towns and villages of Santorini all to yourself, some inconvenience might be worth it for you. Without the throngs of tourists vying for space, you can wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of Oia, Fira, and Pyrgos at your own pace, taking in the iconic architecture and stunning vistas without interruption.

We visited Santorini in December during our all-inclusive Mediterranean cruise experience with Celestyal Cruises ( rated highly on Cruise Critic ), where we visited Crete, Santorini, Kusadasi, Istanbul, and Volos.

Our visit to Santorini in winter was glorious, and we definitely lucked out with weather.

The sun was shining, the temperature wasn’t too cold at all. Ben even had to take his shirt off as we hiked to the rocky peninsula housing the Church of Panagia Theoskepasti because he was sweating so much! (On a side note, this tour will take you to this epic hidden gem of a church, plus some wine tasting and other epic sightseeing).

Since we were visiting with a cruise, we didn’t have to worry about accomodation on the island, though we did notice that many of the beautiful cliff-side stays were closed down for the off-season. We also didn’t worry about finding food, as we just stuffed our faces before leaving the cruise ship, and brought along some snacks.

So much easier to get crowd-free pictures in Santorini in December

Some restaurants were open when we visited Santorini in December, but we heard other cruise-goers were very frustrated with the lack of choice in dining, and with not being able to eat where they wanted.

We also still saw some souvenir shops open, but many were closed for the winter. The cable car was still running, though, allowing you to conveniently get to and from the Old Port of Gialos to Fira.

But the best part of visiting Santorini in winter?

Our cruise constituted the only visitors on Santorini during our visit, so we basically had all the most beautiful and popular Santorini sights to ourselves.

If you travel to Santorini in December independently, you’ll have even more of the island to yourself, as once the cruise ships leave, the streets of Santorini will be your oyster.

Of course, visiting Santorini during winter is a bit of a gamble, as you might be unlucky with weather.

At worst, ferries to/from Santorini may be suspended for weeks at a time in winter during times of rough weather. If you have strict timelines, winter may not be the best time to plan a trip if you fear this possibility.

But if you don’t mind risking the weather, and giving up certain conveniences in exchange for cheaper prices and the experience of Santorini without the crowds, December might just be the best month to visit Santorini for you.

We certainly loved it!

While summer may be the most popular time to visit Santorini, and winter is the best time to visit Santorini without the crowds, the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn boast their own allure.

Without the extreme crowds of summer, and the extreme emptiness of winter, the spring and autumn months are a nice balance for most people, making these the best months to visit Santorini overall.

It’s the perfect time to visit the wineries of Santorini .

In April, May, September, and October, the weather is pleasantly warm, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).

And while these months won’t be as empty as in winter, you’ll still encounter fewer crowds and enjoy lower prices on accommodations and flights in Santorini than you will in the summer.

So When is the Best Time to Visit Santorini?

Ultimately, the best time to visit Santorini depends on your personal preferences and travel goals.

Whether you’re seeking vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, or pristine, cultural experiences, Santorini offers something for every traveler year-round.

However, for a perfect balance of favorable weather, fewer crowds, and budget-friendly options, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the island shines in all its glory without the summer hustle and bustle.
