We did the 7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour with Adriann as our guide and it was outstanding! We drove through beautiful landscapes, had the opportunity to hike in all the national parks and were able to take great photos. Adriann is very accommodating, knows a lot about the individual places and manages to make the trip an unforgettable experience for everyone. We chose the camping option and didn't regret it. The sunrise over the Moment Valley was particularly unique! We can highly recommend Bindlestiff and especially Adriann Narciso :)

We were fortunate to have Claire Kredens as our driver guide. She is a gifted leader and could cope with ant situation. Such a tour is useful to learn which cities you might like to re-visit because our time in each is very short. Four and five hour drives every other day is exhausting and maybe the number of places visited could be edited downward. On the whole, I enjoyed the trip altho the age range 15-99 is unwise. 15-80 would be much more realistic.

My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!

I took the 5-day Coho tour starting in Vancouver. Our tour guide Kiera was just great and has always given us with a lot of interesting information about Canada in general, our surroundings, nature and trains. In general, you could ask her anything and thus got a life coach or Canada expert! Also our group was great! We were only 7th at the beginning and became a group of 11 in Banff, due to the fact that we were the last tour for the year. Together we had fun bus rides and marveled at the beauty of Canada. I really recommend everyone to do this tour! We saw so much that otherwise would not have been possible for one independently in the short amount of time! We also did a lot of great things as a group (campfires, cooking, game night, going out) and became great friends that definitely keep in touch! Keira also always asked us about our preferences, which also allowed us to decide for ourselves what we wanted to focus on! I really loved this flexibility! My expectations of the trip were definitely exceeded and I am overjoyed to have chosen it. The hostels were also all very pleasant and clean. The Wildness Hostel was definitely a highlight, which made the experience even more special. I would gladly give it more stars as I am absolutely convinced and can recommend it to everyone!

If you're looking to see the most beautiful parts of BC and Alberta without any of the hassle and cost of organising/driving then this tour is for you. You are taken through the most stunning parts of Canada, all the while making new friends and being as daring as you please with optional activities such as bungee jumping in canyons, ziplining down mountains and kayaking on glacial lakes. Is there lots of time spent on the road? Sure! But chatting to your fellow explorers and even just looking out the windows to marvel at the jaw-dropping landscape will pass the time quickly. There are only a few days of the tour that are heavy on travel and Moose have ensured that there are pit-stops at stunning locations along the way to keep you in the adventurous spirit. Travelling by bus also gives you access to places that are not as easily seen by car; Moraine lake for example (one of the most beautiful places on the trip) was only open to busses when we arrived, the car park having filled up for the day at 6am. Hostel accommodation was the perfect medium - I wasn't keen on camping but nor did I want to shell out on a tour with hotel stays at twice the price. Most of the hostels were brand new and immaculate (HI Banff, HI Whistler, HI Jasper). It was my first time in hostels and I was pleasantly surprised. Just remember to bring your flip-flops for the showers and some earplugs to block out any snorers! Also be aware that Rampart Creek (Rustic hostel stay in the mountains for 1 night only) has no flushing toilets or running water so prepare adequately for that one! For me, most things in life are about the people you experience it with and Moose didn’t disappoint. I know it’s pot-luck who you get in your group, but I think this tour does pull in like minded people and it was a pleasure to travel with everyone on my tour. Our Guide, Bruno, was also amazing and completely made our trip. He was knowledgeable, kept things fun and was every part a one-of-the gang as the rest of us. While the Niagara full trip was well-organized and enjoyable, I must express some disappointment with the Washington portion of our journey. During our time in Washington, we felt that our itinerary did not allow us to explore the city's attractions as much as we would have liked. Spending a significant amount of time at the cemetery felt like a missed opportunity to experience the vibrant culture and history of Washington. In future trips, I suggest considering a more balanced itinerary that allows for ample time to explore the various attractions and landmarks that each destination has to offer.

Excellent tour of the Mighty 5 in Utah. Our guide Robin was knowledgeable and accommodating throughout the tour. Just enough time was allocated for hiking the trails, viewing the sites in the distance and even visiting the Visitor Centers in each park. Hotel/motel accommodations were good and chosen for access to restaurants. Lunch stops with corresponding places to eat were well planned and the food and service was good. We thoroughly enjoyed our time.

Just couldn’t have been better. Extremely professional guides Robin and Sarah were highly knowledgable, friendly and organised. Accomodation was excellent in every location (most hotels even had hot tubs and pools!) and the food options were always good. Lovely comfortable Mercedes minibus. Highly recommended to everyone - would do another tour with South West Adventure Tours in a heartbeat.

This trip was run like a school trip, we were told that we had to stick to the schedule rigidly even though I asked several times to visit a different museum/shop. Free time was limited and it seemed like the guide had specific ideas of what he wanted to do and see. Our guide also left us on a subway in New York to get home close to midnight and then we had issues getting checked into the hostel. FYI most tour guides make sure their group gets to the hotel safely and without hassle. Waste of time and money.

From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

On her radar currently are safaris to spot India’s rising tiger population, top-end hotel openings in Rajasthan and a new single-suite wooden boat that’s perfect for privately cruising the Ganges, Bhagirathi and Hooghly Rivers.

Jules Maury, Scott Dunn Private

Maury runs this offshoot of the UK-based travel firm, focused entirely on bespoke itineraries. Much of her work during the pandemic involved extended stays for home-schooling families who were looking to live and work in a new locale, whether spending two and a half months at Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives or a month in residence at Antigua’s Jumby Bay. Another guest commandeered the five-room Sheldon Chalet in Denali National Park, an ultra-secluded property accessible only by a 45-minute helicopter ride.

The SDP team follows multiple pro-social protocols when it travels and encourages clients to follow suit, including the Pack for a Purpose program, in which visitors pack requested supplies in their luggage for distribution at the destination. It’s laser-focused on ethical practices, too. Animal welfare is a priority, so providers that offer bullfighting or elephant riding are not used, and there’s a pledge that 90 percent of all operators will not provide single-use plastics to guests by the end of 2023.

Deborah Calmeyer, Roar Africa

The Zimbabwe-born Calmeyer has carved out a discrete niche as the ultimate elite safari planner, with the ability to pull off near-impossible requests, even during the pandemic. Rwanda’s government requires a negative PCR Covid-19 test for visitors, but offers only the throat-swab version at Kigali airport—a problem for one Roar Africa client, desperate to go gorilla-trekking but phobic about anything touching his throat. Calmeyer set up a protocol change, arranging for a nose swab to be administered instead.

She has offices in Nairobi, Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the HQ in New York, and Roar Africa continued to pay drivers, freelance guides and its staff even during lockdown, as governmental support in situ was scant. Roar Africa supports several social programs, including an all-women anti-poaching academy in Kenya, which has so far graduated almost 30 fully trained rangers, and underwrites a scholarship at a college of tourism in South Africa that trains women to work at local hotels and lodges.

Catherine Heald, Remote Lands

Remote Lands’ expertise centers entirely on planning ultra-luxury trips for Americans to Asia, with offices in New York and Bangkok, plus country managers in every locale.

Heald and business partner Jay Tindall try to ensure a positive impression both for their guests and by them, encouraging clients, for example, to fund the digging of a water well for a local family whenever Siem Reap in Cambodia forms part of the itinerary. Conscious of the higher carbon footprint of itineraries that span the continent, the pair deliberately minimize the number of flights, private or commercial.

Last year, a Texas couple who were planning to go solo to Asia to celebrate both his 70th birthday and their 40th wedding anniversary had to postpone, and instead Heald helped them turn their three-week, four-country trip into a reunion with their grandchildren, whom they plan to take along this November.

Beks Ndlovu, Founder of African Bush Camps

Ndlovu has maintained momentum, despite the safari industry’s devastating year. The operator and hotelier kept his entire 600-person staff employed while also unveiling Khwai Leadwood, a new high-design lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It’s the latest in his eco-conscious properties; he has rolled out 16 of them in 15 years across three countries, a remarkable achievement. Each has a light footprint, via solar farms and water recycling, while also offering direct support to surrounding communities via the company’s ABC Foundation.

Even amid the logistical and medical constraints of the past year, Ndlovu seamlessly pulled off a recent journey for 14 people to Zimbabwe via private plane. “There was a lot of juggling, but it was well worth it,” says Ndlovu, who advocates for guests to spend their tourism dollars with brands that preserve wilderness areas and empower minorities and locals. “We continue to make the effort in identifying key talent that we can support and help rise to the surface.”

Cedric Reversade, Unique Properties & Events

Luxury travel was already tilting toward villa rentals before the pandemic made the idea of privacy, and self-containment, even more appealing. The London- and Paris-based Reversade and business partner Koskas offer discreet access to the world’s best rental homes in hot spots like Saint-Tropez, Ibiza and Capri while also acting as a travel concierge.

Take the California client who had bought a piano nobile on the Grand Canal in Venice, just before the first lockdown—and for whom they managed to secure a visa even when borders were shut. They also arranged excursions in the city, like a day on Burano with the glassblowers and a night visit to San Marco. Or the polo-loving English client who ditched her Chelsea townhouse for a seafront estate in Ibiza they’d wrangled on her behalf as lockdowns loomed; she then took trips around Spain, including lunching with a retired rejoneador from whom she bought two horses to ride at her country estate.

Cari Gray, Gray & Co.

Based in Santa Monica, Calif., Canadian expat Gray runs a lean team of about 10 with a particular expertise in active luxury. Take the trip to Argentina and Uruguay which shuttled her guests between cycling spots by private jet. It was due to start just as Argentina shuttered its borders last March, so Gray’s team pivoted, re-booking the group on a similar itinerary in California within 24 hours.

She’s determined that the lavish sums spent by clients truly uplift every destination, especially in developing areas. One pair of travelers sponsored GPS collars on a research project for rescued elephants at a local animal reserve in Namibia and witnessed the process firsthand. And an always recommended pit stop in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco is one of the late Eve Branson’s projects, which employs local women making crafts. It isn’t all do-gooding, though: Gray is renowned for arranging Michelin-caliber chefs to cater alfresco at the end of a day’s hiking.

James Jayasundera, Ampersand Travel

Sri Lanka is one of the rare destinations in Asia that have managed to create a program that allows visitors to experience the country during the pandemic, and no one is a better expert to help navigate an itinerary in that new normal than Rome-raised Jayasundera and his five-person, almost two-decade-old firm. Visitors can stay in designated hotels, he explains, and even go sightseeing, as long as they remain in “bio bubbles” to protect the local populace from imported infection.

Jayasundera started early, noting the preferences of each of his 12-strong family as they traveled constantly in his childhood, and has made such attention to detail a hallmark of his commercial operation. Inclusivity is a longtime passion, with a strong presence in the LGBTQ community among both staff and clients, and efforts to use female guides where possible to offset challenges around equality.

Mark Duguid, Carrier

The 60-person, Manchester-based Carrier plans less than 5,000 trips per year, allowing it to retain a reputation for flexibility. It’s willing to change itineraries within hours of departure and never charging amending fees. Duguid and his team were well placed, then, for the challenges of last year: See the couple from the UK who seized the chance to travel when permitted during a break in lockdowns, heading impromptu to the Maldives as an add-on to a last-minute visit to Dubai. Carrier recognized the appeal of the outdoors for travelers in the last year, too, and created an exclusive trip to Octola in Finland’s Arctic Circle, a five-star private wilderness reserve where local guides hosted open-fire lunches and ran excursions on husky sleds and snowmobiles.

Duguid reports a surge in so-called revenge spending, noting that the average booking value for 2021 has risen 90 percent year over year, with clients indulging in once-in-a-lifetime trips after lockdown restrictions loosen.

Travel Agent License + Seller of Travel Registration: Do You Need Them in 2024?

So, you want to become a travel agent and now you're wondering what's next. Do you need a travel agent license to get started? Is their travel agency licensing on the federal level? The state level?

Here's the quick answer to your travel agent license question: Depending on what state you live in — or if you sell to residents who live in states with seller of travel (SOT) requirements — the answer is yes, you may need one.

We're glad you're here because we're going to tell you, in laymen's terms, how to get the travel agency licensing you need.

What Is a Travel Agent License or Seller of Travel Registration?

First thing to know: we'll use the term travel agent license and seller of travel (SOT) registration interchangeably.

Normal people would call it a travel agent license but since it's not actually a license, the states call it seller of travel registrations. Po-tay-toes, po-tah-toes.

You might be envisioning that a travel agency license requires:

• travel agent training requirements,
• tests your industry knowledge,
• or lays out continuing education requirements.

Well, it doesn't. :) It's best to think of a travel agency license more like a registration, which is why they're formally called Seller of Travel registrations.

Federal + State Travel Agent Licensing

Let's start with the good news: On the national/federal level, a seller of travel license is not required . The US government isn't looking to cash in on travel agencies through registration/licensing fees. Phew!

The travel agent license thing changes a bit when it comes to the state level. While this may sound like a bummer, there's more good news . . . very few states (only four) have travel agent licensing requirements.

In the US, there are four states that have Seller of Travel (SOT) registrations: Hawaii, Washington, Florida, and California.

When we talk about The Big Four SOT States ® , we're talking about California (CA), Florida (FL), Hawaii (HI), and Washington (WA).

How do I know if I need a Seller of Travel Registration?

How do you know if you need a Florida Seller of Travel, California Seller of Travel, Washington Seller of Travel or Hawaii Seller of Travel registration?

If I had to summarize this entire article in two sentences it would go like this: If your agency is based in or you have clients in California, Florida, Washington, or Hawaii you will need to register as a seller of travel for those respective states.

If this isn't you, then congratulations! You're dismissed from HAR's travel agency license class.

If you are one of the lucky advisors who operate in or sell to clients in HI, WA, FL, or CA then congratulations to you too, because you're about to sound really knowledgeable at travel industry events when someone asks you about Seller of Travel registrations!

The thing to know about Florida's seller of travel, California's seller of travel and Washington and Hawaii's is that they aren't just contained to state lines.

If you live in New York but you're booking a client that lives in California, Florida, Washington or Hawaii, guess what? You're expected to comply with the Big Four laws.

The Seller of Travel for California, Florida, Hawaii, and Washington apply to any agency that does business with residents of those states. — Daniel Zim

"The Seller of Travel for California, Florida, Hawaii and Washington apply to any agency that does business with residents of those states. They are extraterritorial laws meaning that the law extends far beyond the borders of the state. The business does not have to reside in the regulating state, the business could reside anywhere in the world but it would have to comply with California, Florida, Hawaii and Washington."

I want to warn you that it may seem overwhelming . But don't worry. You only need to focus on the requirements in states that apply to you. Plus, once you figure out what you need and apply for your travel agency license, you're good to go!

California Seller of Travel + Travel Agency License: Do You Need One & How to Apply

Let's start with the doozie. California.

Because they're one of the Big Four SOT States ®, if your travel agency is located in California or you book clients who reside in California, you may need a travel agency license/ seller of travel number in California.

California's Seller of Travel + travel agency license is different in a few ways:

• They have a consumer restitution fund that all sellers of travel participate in and pay into.
• In addition to registering as a California seller of travel, you need to register for a business ID, even if you're not located in CA.

California seller of travel + Travel Agency LICENSE: exemptions

I know, increased regulations make your eyes glaze over. BUT, these regulations come with good tidings if you're a (relatively) small businesses.

If you meet all of the exemptions below , you do not need your own California travel agency license / seller of travel number!

1. Your business model is: Sole Proprietor, single-member LLC, or single-shareholder S Corp.

2. You are selling through your host, with your host's accreditation number.

3. You use your host's accreditation for all bookings (no booking direct, booking under your own accreditation or bypassing the host).

4. All fees (consultation/service fees) must be processed through the host agency. ( more on service fees and seller of travel laws )

5. Clients must pay host or supplier directly. (No taking cash. Checks would need to be made out to the host agency.)

6. You must disclose to every sale that you belong to a host, including the host's name, address, phone number and CA SOT registration number.

7. You have a written contract with a host agency that has a CA SOT.

California Seller of travel + Travel Agency LICENSE: How to APPLY

Here's the steps to apply for California's seller of travel and travel agency license:

1. Register your business with California's Secretary of State

Register for a CA state business ID .

If you don't live in CA, you'll fill out the ' foreign entity ' (out-of-state or out-of-country) form for your respective business structure .

2. Register with the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation

If you need to apply for your own California Seller of Travel number, register your agency with the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation . They are in charge of administration of the Travel Consumer Restitution Fund. Cost is $100 for each location .

Who needs to participate in the Travel Consumer Restitution Fund? According to the CA dept. of justice (DOJ), "A registered seller of travel whose principal place of business is in California and who does business with persons in California must participate in the TCRC."

Of course, to keep it interesting, the Travel Consumer Restitution Fund has some exemptions :

• Applicant does not do business or advertise to persons located in California, including by internet advertisement; but has a location in California.
• Applicant's principal place of business is outside California.
• Applicant has no location or agent in California.
• Applicant is neither an issuer nor a subsidiary of an issuer of securities that are listed on a national securities exchange or designated as a national market system security.

3. Establish a Trust Account

If you apply for a California Seller of Travel number and travel agency license, you will need to establish a trust account for any direct payments from clients.

There are a few alternatives to a trust account for any rebels about there:

• Credit Card Transactions: If you only accept credit card payments and you don't have access to clients funds, this is a great alternative to a trust. Do you qualify? Check out this California Seller of Travel affidavit form .
• Acquire a Surety Bond
• Include a Consumer Protection Escrow Plan (§17550.16 - Exemption from trust account. Letter (c), 1-7)

4. Apply for your California seller of travel + travel agency license

Once you're registered through the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation, apply for your California seller of travel number (which is California's travel agency license) .

5. Renew annually

You'll need to renew your California seller of travel registration and travel agency license every year. Renewal is a choose your own adventure situation. Here's your two paths:

• There have been no changes in your agency: Congrats! This is the easy route. If all your agency info is the same when you previously applied, all you need to do is fill out this attestation form .
• There have been changes: This is the thornier path, but all you have to do is read these instructions then fill out this renewal form .

Florida Seller of Travel + Florida Travel Agency License

Since Florida is a member of our Big Four SOT States®, we know that Florida's Seller of Travel law applies to any travel agency who books clients residing in Florida, regardless of the agency's location, right?

[In unison: "Yes, Steph."]

You're doing so great!

Florida's travel agency license isn't nearly as complex as California's (thank goodness), but it's important to know that Florida may require you to have a surety bond.

Florida Seller of Travel + Travel AGENCY LICENSE: Exemptions

The big question: If an independent contractor belongs to a host agency , can that independent contractor use the host's Florida seller of travel number and travel agency license?

If you meet ALL of the exemptions below, you can use your host agency's Florida Seller of Travel number , but you must fill out the Independent Agent Statement of Exemption Form ($50/yr):

• You must be with a host agency that has a Florida Seller of Travel number; AND
• Have a writtencontract with the seller(s) of travel listed above (you'll provide them a copy of the contract); AND
• You do not accept fees (service/consultation/etc), commission, or other valuable consideration directly from your clients (they must go through your host agency); AND
• You do not have unused ticket stock in your possession; AND
• You do not have the ability to issue tickets, lodging or vacation certificates, or any other travel documents.

And here's another scenario where your travel agency can be exempt from Florida's Seller of Travel registration.

• If you're an ARC accredited agency for 3+ years under the same ownership, then you can file for an exemption.

Florida Seller of Travel + Travel AGENCY LICENSE: How to Apply

The Florida Seller of Travel number costs $300/yr and requires annual renewal. (If you're selling vacation certificates, add on another $100/yr.)

For all you active duty military, honorably discharged veterans, military spouses or surviving spouses out there—thank you for your service and sacrifices!—you may be eligible for a waiver of the registration/renewal fees ( see section 2(c) for requirements ). Here's the military fee waiver request form .

Something Florida requires for their seller of travel registration and travel agency license that California does not, is travel agencies need to provide a $25,000 Surety Bond with their application. (It jumps to a $50,000 bond if you're selling vacation certificates.)

But good news!

• If you've got a clean record and 5 or more years of operating in the state of Florida, you can file for a complete waiver of the bond requirement (waiver form is in the registration/renewal application).
• For those of you with a clean track record, you can also request a request a security reduction on your application or fill out a separate security exemption form , which would bring the bond amount down to $10k-20k, depending on your sales.

Here's the steps to get your Florida Seller of Travel number and travel agency license:

1. Get a surety bond (if applicable)

Don't forget to make sure the seals or signatures by principal and witnesses are on the bond. Also make sure the power of attorney is included with surety bond.

2. Apply for your Florida seller of travel registration and travel agency license

Fill out this application if you need your own seller of travel number . Or apply here if you can use your host agency's SOT number .

3. Renew annually

All registrations are valid for one year, beginning the day the certificate is issued, unless suspended or revoked for cause. Don't forget to renew because Florida may issue civil or administrative fines of up to $5,000 per violation. (Each sale or attempted sale may be considered a separate violation. )

Hawaii Seller of Travel + Travel Agency License

Again, Hawaii is one of our Big Four SOT States ® so if you're working with clients who live in Hawaii—even if your agency isn't in Hawaii—you'll need a Hawaii travel agency license/ seller of travel number.

There's a few key points to know about Hawaii's travel agency licensing:

• Similar to the CA SOT laws, regardless of where you live, you'll need to register your business in Hawaii if you are an LLC, LLP, Corporation, or Partnership. (Out of state agencies will register as a foreign entity.)
• If you're selling stand-alone activities to your clients, you technically also need an Activity Desk license.
• And this last one is the most challenging. Travel agencies need to have a business bank account with a bank located in Hawaii.

Hawaii Seller of Travel + Travel Agency License: Exemptions

One of our awesome Hawaii-based readers gave us the scoop on Hawaii's travel agency licensing/ seller of travel laws—thanks for your sleuthing, Mara Kunkel!

In addition to registering for a seller of travel license, Hawaii has regulations about opening a client trust account (see #3 above). But thanks to Mara's sleuthing, we've learned that Hawaii-based agents who want to go with a mainland host can apply for a waiver for the host, assuming the agent is not handling any of the clients' money—no cash, no checks—directly.

Hawaii agents with mainland hosts can qualify for a trust account waiver only if they do not handle client monies. Similar to CA, all client money needs to go through the supplier or the host agency. If this is up your alley, you can include that information in a letter asking for a trust account waiver along with your application for a Hawaii seller of travel license.

The Hawaii seller of travel and travel agency license costs $215/yr on the even-numbered years and $146/yr on the odd-numbered years. (Hawaii likes to keep you on your toes!)

Hawaii Seller of Travel + Travel Agency License: How to Apply

Here's what you need to do to get your Hawaii seller of travel and travel agency license:

1. Register your business with Hawaii's Dept of Commerce and Consumer Affairs

Register your business with the Business Registration Division (BREG) if you are an LLC, LLP, Corporation, or Partnership. (Out of state agencies will register as a foreign entity and sole proprietors need not register.) Here's the current fee schedule to register your business in Hawaii . 2. Open a trust account with a bank in Hawaii

We know they give exceptions for Hawaii-based agencies that have a mainland host as long as the agency isn't accepting any money and that may transfer to non-Hawaii-based agencies. You can try calling them at (808) 586-3000 to see if your agency would qualify for an exemption on this.

3. Apply for your Hawaii Seller of Travel registration

Fill out the Hawaii travel agent license application , making sure to have your trust account information and if you're a LLC, LLP, partnership or corporation, have proof your business is registered with BREG (step 1).

3. Renew on odd-numbered years

All Hawaii travel agency licenses, regardless of issuance date, expire on December 31 of each ODD-NUMBERED year and are subject to renewal on or before the expiration date. Renewal applications and the notarized statement form are mailed to current registrations about 6 weeks prior to the expiration date.

Washington Seller of Travel + Travel Agency License

When it comes to Washington's travel agency license/ seller of travel laws, it's going to sound awfully familiar. Of course, we have the start with the same base as the other Big Four SOT States ® —you'll need the license not only if your agency is in Washington state, but also if you serve clients who live there.

Since (most) ICs sell travel under their own brand, they will have to get their own Washington travel agency license.

And like Hawaii and California, Washington wants to know who owns your agency so they require proof of business registration. But unlike Hawaii and California, if your agency is located outside Washington state, you can send proof of business registration in your home state. Hurray for small victories!

And here's a new twist: If you hold payments for travel for more than 5 days, you'll need to do 1 of 3 things:

• Open up a Seller of Travel trust account (business account) at a bank in Washington state.
• Purchase a Surety Bond (the size of the bond is based on the previous year's sales).
• Be a member of good standing in a professional association approved by the Department of Licensing, through which you get both a $1,000,000 errors and omissions policy and a surety bond of at least $250,000. What associations offer that, I honestly have no idea...

Washington Seller of Travel + tRAVEL aGENCY lICENSE: Exemptions

If the IC meets the following criteria, they can use the host's Washington travel agency license number 2 :

• The host agency has a Washington Seller of Travel number and has the IC is registered under their number.; and
• The IC is conducting business using the name of the host agency; and
• No money goes through the independent contractor. All money is collected in the name of the host agency and is processed by the host agency. No collecting cash, no checks made out to your agency, service/consultation fees would need to be charged under the host agency's name. ( more on service fees and seller of travel laws )

I'm going to be frank and say that it's unlikely an IC can use their host's Washington seller of travel number.

Because in order to use a host's Washington seller of travel number / travel agency license, the advisor needs to be selling under the name of the host agency. Since (most) hosted advisors sell travel under their own brand, not their host's brand, they will have to get their own Washington travel agency license.

Washington Seller of Travel + Travel agency License: How to Apply

We'll walk you through apply to get a Washington travel agency license online below:

1. Apply for a Washington state business license

Out of state businesses can attach proof of business registration in their state, and Washington based businesses can apply for a business license here . It's through the Department of Revenue so you may feel like you're in the wrong place, but you're not!

Set up an account and under 'Business Licensing' heading, select 'Apply for a New Business License'. This will walk you through the steps to get registered in Washington.

When you get to the 'Activity Search' section (below), select 'Travel Agent, Agency'. This will trigger the adding of the Seller of Travel endorsement (form) to your application.

For foreign entities (travel agencies not located in Washington), you'll have a chance to upload proof of business registration with your state at the end of the application.

There is a $50 processing fee for the business license and the Washington seller of travel license will set you back $222/yr. (Washington SOT fee schedule) . You can pay online.

2. Renew annually

Washington seller of travel and travel agency licenses expire one year after issue so make sure to renew it in the same place you applied for your business license in step 1.

Other States with Travel Agency Regulations

The Big Four SOT States ® are the ones everyone will always say have Seller of Travel (SOT) laws/travel agency licensing but there's a few I found I think should also be mentioned:

• Delaware: If you're a travel agency in Delaware (scroll to No. 24) , you are required to register for an occupational license. The cost is currently $225 USD. It's a bit different than the state travel agency licensing laws above because you only need it if you open a travel agency in Delaware (vs. needing it if you plan to sell to any Delaware residents).
• Illinois: Surprise! If your agency is based in Illinois, you may need to establish a trust account in order to adhere to the Illinois Travel Promotion Consumer Protection . Our insider source (Ann Thomson Nelson in the comments) mentioned this requirement only pertains to agents taking payments from clients, rather than paying the supplier directly. Even then, there are exemptions if you a.) have the equivalent of $1M liability coverage through Errors and Omissions Insurance , and b.) have a surety bond of $100,000 or more.
• Louisiana: Louisiana requires an annual travel agency licensing fee for retail travel agencies (storefronts). Are you a home-based agency in Louisiana? You're in the clear! What's the cost? • Massachusetts: They have a 4-page document of random rules for travel agencies that make a wonderful read before bedtime. Sweet dreams, Massachusetts agency owners: MA's 940 CMR .
• New York: NY also has hard and fast laws for sellers of travel. I'd like to say they're common sense, and that so long as you're not a jerk, you're okay, but you know what, I'm going to go ahead and resist that temptation. Instead, if you're an NY-based agent, go read NY's Article 10-A Truth in Travel Act . Particularly, look at this chapter, Section 157-A for a very specific outline of disclosures you must provide for your travel clients.

If you're a tour operator, or participate in travel club sales, chances are that since you're selling travel, you'll need a seller of travel license and the requirements and application process may be a little different.

Local/City Travel Agent Licensing

In the beginning, we said there is no travel agency licensing laws on the national level. Then we zoomed in on the state level, where we had The Big Four SOT States ® (Florida, California, Washington, Hawaii) with the seller of travel/ travel agency licensing laws.

Now let's talk about things on the city level.

Breaking down regulations to the city level is complex. The local level is going to involve some research on your end. What you'll want to do is familiarize yourself with local laws that affect travel agencies.

A good start is to ask your local Chamber of Commerce if there are any general business regulations in your city that you should be aware of.

Save Money With a Travel Agent License with a Host Agency

Since the site focuses on host agencies, it's important to mention another host agency benefit —saving the expense of a travel agency license. In some states, you can use your host's Seller of Travel number instead of purchasing your own!

For instance, in Florida, independent contractors that are exempt don't have to pay the full $300 annual registration fee. Agents with a host can go under their host's Florida Seller of Travel number and pay only $50/yr - a savings of $250.  😊 And now hosted agents that meet CA's criteria for exemption can sell under their host agency's California Seller of Travel number — a savings of $100/year.

NASA has a lot in the works, like taking amazing pictures of space and putting humans on the moon and Mars. Below, we take a look at some of the excitement surrounding the space agency.

Perhaps the mission with the most publicity, NASA's Artemis mission aims to put people back on the moon and "establish the first long-term presence." 

The mission is ongoing and takes place in phases. Artemis I took place in November 2022 and tested the safety of NASA's Space Launch System rocket using mannequins in preparation for phase II.

NASA has also been funding private companies to create lunar landers to be tested prior to humans making the attempt. The Peregrine launcher, created by the company Astrobotic Technology, was launched in January 2024, but did not make it to the moon because of a critical propellant loss. In February, the Odysseus launcher, created by the company Intuitive Machines, successfully landed on the moon "marking the first commercial spacecraft to soft-land on the moon, and the first U.S.-made vehicle to touch down on the lunar surface since the Apollo program ended more than five decades ago,"

 said CNN .

Artemis II is expected to occur in September 2025, said Reuters . The phase will last approximately 10 days when "four astronauts will fly around the moon to test NASA's foundational human deep space exploration capabilities ... for the first time with crew." 

The next phase of the mission is Artemis III , which "will mark humanity's first return to the lunar surface in more than 50 years," and "make history by sending the first humans to explore the region near the lunar South Pole." The agency has selected the science instruments for the astronauts to deploy during the mission, specifically geared toward "understanding planetary processes, understanding the character and origin of lunar polar volatiles, and investigating and mitigating exploration risks," NASA said. This phase is scheduled to take place in 2026. Researchers are meanwhile eyeing landing locations, some of which contain water ice that could be of use on future missions.

In addition to exploring the moon, NASA hopes to mine the area by 2032. The agency is looking to develop resources on the moon including water, oxygen and eventually minerals like iron.

Part of the goal of the Artemis mission is to set up a pilot processing plant on the moon to excavate resources, for which the first customers are expected to be commercial rocket companies, per Reuters . With the help of the Australian Space Agency, NASA plans to build and deploy a semi-autonomous rover to "demonstrate the collection of lunar soil that contains oxygen in the form of oxides," maybe as soon as 2026. 

NASA hopes to eventually use the outcomes of the Artemis mission to push humanity to Mars . The space agency is starting with a simulated mission known as the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA), in which four people will live in a simulated Mars-like environment for a year to test the extent to which research can be done, as well as whether people could live and work there. There are four main complications that make traveling to Mars high risk: radiation, an eyeball swelling condition that occurs when people spend too much time in low-gravity situations, crew cooperation, and food and nutrition, CNN said. The first simulation began in June 2023, and the last one will take place in 2026. 

NASA's Psyche mission, launched in October 2023 with the goal of reaching a distant asteroid, hit its first milestone by "successfully carrying out the most distant demonstration of laser communications," CNN said. This is through the Deep Space Optical Communications technology demonstration (DSOC) aboard the Psyche spacecraft. The DSOC was able to achieve "first light," successfully sending and receiving data. This is an initial step in deeper space study and can aid in further exploration and reaching Mars.

NASA's work isn't limited to space — the agency does valuable work for Earth, as well, especially in regard to tracking climate change. NASA has an Earth-observing satellite with the ability to track carbon dioxide emissions and removal by country. Tracking carbon emissions was not the initial goal of the satellite, but it provided a unique opportunity. "NASA is focused on delivering Earth science data that addresses real-world climate challenges," said Karen St. Germain , the director of NASA's Earth Science Division.

Another of NASA's satellites also detected early signs of El Niño, the natural phenomenon sending global temperatures skyrocketing . "When we measure sea level from space using satellite altimeters, we know not only the shape and height of water but also its movement, like Kelvin and other waves," said Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer , a NASA program scientist. NASA technology also found that coastlines are sinking and it is "happening rapidly enough to threaten infrastructure, farmland, and wetlands that tens of millions of people along the coast rely upon," the agency said.

In addition to space travel, NASA is also working to create sustainable travel on Earth. The agency has two programs dedicated to the project: the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project and the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EFPD) project.

For the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project, NASA and Boeing are working to develop a full-scale demonstrator aircraft called the X-66A, CNN said. The project "builds on NASA's world-leading efforts in aeronautics as well climate," NASA's Nelson said in a statement . "The X-66A will help shape the future of aviation, a new era where aircraft are greener, cleaner, and quieter, and create new possibilities for the flying public and American industry alike." The agency hopes to run a test flight in 2028.

Through the agency's OSIRIS-REx program, scientists have retrieved a sample from the asteroid Bennu . Researchers have only tested the black rocks and dust on the outside of the collection device, but there have already been interesting findings. "We have verified that Bennu is dominated by water-bearing clay minerals," Dante Lauretta, the principal investigator for NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, said to NPR . "We're just beginning here, but we picked the right asteroid, and not only that, we brought back the right sample," Daniel Glavin, OSIRIS-REx sample analyst and senior scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said to CNN . "This stuff is an astrobiologist's dream."

NASA launched its Psyche mission in October 2023. The mission's goal is to travel to a "unique metal-rich asteroid with the same name, orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter," the NASA website said. The asteroid is metal-heavy and may be a "partial core of a planetesimal, a building block of an early planet." The mission is expected to begin exploring the asteroid in 2029.

NASA has started using modified U-2 spy planes to hunt for "strategic minerals" in the desert, Space.com said. The planes are being used to "locate stores of minerals hidden in the American desert," that are "vital for electronics manufacturing, the US economy and, by extension, national security."

The project is called the Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEMx) and is in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey. "Undiscovered deposits of at least some of these critical and strategic minerals almost certainly exist in the United States, but modern geophysical data is needed to increase our knowledge of these resources," Dean Riley, a collaborator on the project, said in a statement .

NASA officially approved the $3.35 billion Dragonfly mission, a "revolutionary project to explore Saturn's largest moon with a quadcopter drone," Ars Technica said. The rotorcraft is set to arrive at Saturn'’s moon Titan in 2034. "Dragonfly is a spectacular science mission with broad community interest, and we are excited to take the next steps on this mission," Nicky Fox, the associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate Headquarters, said in a NASA statement . "Exploring Titan will push the boundaries of what we can do with rotorcraft outside of Earth."

The goal of the mission is to "fly to dozens of promising locations on the moon, looking for prebiotic chemical processes common on both Titan and the early Earth before life developed," the statement said. The rotorcraft will explore Titan for three years. The Dragonfly mission is also the first where NASA is flying a vehicle on another planetary body for science.
