FLD120 Cruise Control

Here's some dumb questions, posed cause maybe someone can steer me to the right functioning and electrical component locations. The cruise has never worked since buying the truck and I want to fix it. Two lever switches mounted on the underdash area just above my left knee. I assume the left most switch is to enable (up) or disable (down) the cruise feature and the rightmost is to resume cruise/increase speed (up) or set cruise/decrease speed (down). Cruise gets suspended if the clutch or brake is pressed. Is this how the FLD is setup. I need to get it working so I can control the idle, especially with the up and coming winter. Are most of the electrical components accessible under the center panel? i.e. fuses? relays? etc. Thank you for any experience/knowledge furnished.

I did a search and found some info that says to check the clutch and brake return springs and switches first. Will do. Also with the FLD, does it have a light indicator to confirm cruise is engaged? Thanks again.  
The cruise switch that toggles up/down momentarily was not working internally. Got a replacement, now to install and here's hoping.

have you checked your parking brake safety switch ? behind air button inside the dash is a pressure switch that has single wire that likes to fall off connector . i added a longer wire to connector and fixed my high idle ,cruise control problem. hope this helps

i have a '93 FLD120 with a non-functioning cruise control. Have you had a chance to solve your issue? I too can not find a wiring schematic to help me trace down the wiring and sensors.

  • Page 63 Driver Controls Wiper Controls The wipers are operated by a rotary switch on the turn signal lever. There are five settings: off, two intermittent settings, and two continuous speeds. Symbols mark each setting on the dial. Turn the wipers on by rotating the rotary switch up. Rotate the switch further to increase the speed of the wipers through the two intermittent settings, then to continuous low and high speeds.

I get the feeling it may be worth your time reading about how the dt12 deals with grades considering the part of the world you're trucking in.  

Looks way overcomplicated. Manual engine brake level is set by the left shifter stalk. All the way up is off. One detent clockwise is level 1, 2 detents is level 2, the 3rd detent is level 3. On/Off is the manual switch on the left side of the steering wheel. The CC engine brake switch on the dash dies the same thing for the cruise control computer. Manual engine brake level on the stalk needs to be all the way CCW (up) in the auto position for this to work. Cruise control looks to be "ON" as soon as you power the truck up. I think. Maybe. The Driving MODE selector on the end of the stalk needs to be understood, and there's a creep mode that needs to be understood. The Mode switch controls whether you're in Auto Economy (default,) Auto Performance or Manual mode.

If it had the new version of the smart wheel you just press the minus symbol on the cruise to set it I think. Drove the DT12 with traction control through some slush snow mess. wasn’t bad at all. don’t tell anyone I said that...

There was something going on with the ECM, I think. After I stopped and shut the engine off for a few minutes, the cruise would work with the switches on the wheel. There's a lot more stuff on the control stalks on this thing than any other truck I've driven. As for the autoshift, it's a 13, but for now, I'd rather have my clutch. I'm too used to instant response from a stop and the lag time that it takes for this thing to get the message from the accelerator to tell the transmission to get in gear from neutral is too long. I know the X-15 under the hood has a lot better capabilities than the transmission is allowing. On the plus side, I haven't scratched a single gear since Monday morning! And I hate the gizmos for lane stray and front collision. They're still a pain in the ass. That hasn't changed in 10 years.

This truck was an old lenertz livestock truck. I'd love to talk with their safety and maintenance directors. So many stupid little things that screamed "look at me.." or set up a driver for safety issues. It's stupid. The white truck wasn't much better.

    One is for the speedo, the other is for the ECM. Speedo will read fine if the ECM doesn't have a speed signal, cruise won't work though. Some trucks use one sensor with two outputs also. In my 01 classic, I need to have the Jake switch in the off position for the cruise to work. When the jake is on, cruise won't work.

    There are 2 (at least on mine), one normally open that closes when brake line pressure is felt to turn on the brake lights. The other is a normally closed sensor, that when line pressure is felt, it opens and deactivates things like cruise and throttle control. Both sensors were teed close to each other.
