Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars. 

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site. 

Booking.com

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable. 

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile. 

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for:

• Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer

Expedia offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises, and things to do. 

You can bundle flight, hotel, and car deals so you don't have to go through the headache of looking separately and trying to coordinate all the deals. 

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan. 

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points. 

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

It's well-known for its user-generated reviews, so as you're booking, you get the added benefit of reading reviews all in the same place. While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community. 

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination. 

• Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals) 
• Comparing deals across aggregators

Book a trip with TripAdvisor  

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.  

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price. 

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs.

• Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Book a trip with CheapOair

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on. 

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights. 

• Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page. 
• Travelers on a budget
• Travelers with very specific preferences like hotel brand or car brand

Book a trip with Hotwire

Travelocity.

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same. 

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page. 

• All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle 
•  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Travelocity

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.  

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options. 

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel. 

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day. 

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

The best flight booking sites

1. google flights.

For ease, speed and features, Google Flights is arguably the best website for flight searches. Search results appear almost instantly. Filters let you narrow down to nonstop options, select a subset of airlines, limit by price or factor in the price of a bag. Similarly, you can use Google Flights filters to avoid certain airlines, multi-stop itineraries, long layovers, early flights or pretty much whatever you might want to avoid.

You can easily check flexible dates, and if you're flexible on where you go you can use the Explore map to see prices for a variety of destinations for certain dates, a certain month or anytime in the next six months.

Google Flights partners with hundreds of airlines and online travel agencies (OTAs) to pull current flight prices. That way you don't have to search each of these sites to be able to see the options. Once you select your preferred trip, Google Flights links you to the top booking options for actually booking your flight — including the airline itself and the best OTA booking options.

The downsides of Google Flights are few. One is the lack of Southwest flight prices. Although Southwest flight schedules will show in flight search results, Southwest flight prices aren't available. That's because Southwest chooses to publish flight prices only on its website.

Another downside is that Google Flights doesn't always show the cheapest prices — particularly for international flights. That means it's worth double-checking prices on another site before booking through Google Flights.

Like Google Flights, Kayak searches hundreds of other websites and flight booking platforms to find the best deal. Kayak generally doesn't let you book flights directly. However, one benefit of Kayak is the streamlined process. Rather than having to click through several pages to confirm your selection, clicking "view deal" on the results page can take you right to the cheapest booking option.

Also, some travelers may find Kayak's flexible date search a bit easier to work with as you can see results from several days in the search results — eliminating the need to check each day's results separately.

But perhaps the most important reason to use Kayak instead of Google Flights is that it can catch better deals. Also, Capital One Travel can help you truly get the best price for your flight. Capital One partnered with travel data company Hopper to show suggestions about when it's the best time to book.

Capital One backs up these recommendations with money. If you book a flight through Capital One Travel when Hopper recommends doing so, you'll get up to a $50 credit toward future travel if the price drops within the next 10 days.

Would you be willing to book a trip as two separate tickets in order to save money? That's the idea behind Kiwi. Instead of simply searching flights from your home airport to your destination, Kiwi checks all potential options to get between A and B. That could mean taking a bus or train from your home city to another to catch a flight to your destination. Or, Kiwi might pair a low-cost domestic flight with a cheap international flight from another city to lower your total cost.

Protect your upfront travel expenses by booking with a card that has travel insurance or by purchasing a separate policy .

For example, when we priced out a round-trip flight from Phoenix to Tokyo, the cheapest option when booked as one ticket cost $1,353 round-trip — and that's with an overnight stay in Vancouver.

• Agoda began as a hotel booking site with a focus on Asia, and that focus remains apparent on the home page, where properties in Malaysia, Thailand, and other Eastern destinations get prominent real estate. But now that Agoda has come to the U.S., it delivers a hotel search experience that matches some of the best hotel sites on this list. 
• There are even instances when Agoda had better hotel deals than its competition, including one hotel search result in which the total booking cost was more than $200 less than the same hotel on Priceline (with a coupon code). • Like HotelsCombined, Tripadvisor ‘s hotel search displays some of the very best hotel deals from a range of sites. The tool is built right into Tripadvisor’s general search function, letting you browse the site’s vast library of reviews, then begin your hotel booking seamlessly. The initial list of hotel search results is sorted by “best value” and shows the source of the given price, so that you know where (off Tripadvisor) your hotel booking is going to happen. 
• Tripadvisor searches most of the major hotel booking sites, as well as some lesser-known ones; when applicable, it also includes the hotel’s own website. You can also book directly with Tripadvisor.
• Sort your search by traveler ranking, so you can see the hotels travelers just like you prefer. Guest reviews often include pictures of hotel rooms taken by the guests themselves, not clouded over by staging, so you can see what the rooms actually look like before you book. 

• Another aggregate hotel booking site, Trivago did surface that low price coupon found on Agoda. However, it did not lead with that price, choosing instead to prominently display a higher price from Booking.com in large, green text. Odd. The lower-priced Agoda deal was listed second in the hotel search results, displayed in small gray text along with several others. In fact, Trivago found multiple hotel deals lower than that Booking.com price, but none received top billing for some reason. This happened in several other cases too, where the lead price ended up higher than best hotel prices that Trivago could find.
•  The good thing about conducting a hotel search on Trivago is that Trivago searches several lesser-known hotel booking sites, including Agoda, in addition to the usual suspects like Expedia, Priceline, and Booking.com . But travelers should take a close look at Trivago’s hotel search results to make sure that Trivago isn’t hiding a better deal farther down the list.

• Google’s hotel search engine works by simply entering “hotels in (insert city here)” right on Google.com . (You can also go straight to the Google Hotels page .) This feature is integrated into Google Maps, which makes it very different from any of the other hotel booking sites listed above. On Google, hotel locations are marked by prices on a map, rather than by name or any other identifying characteristic. 
• From there, Google’s hotel search tool is fairly price-forward, which is what metasearch should be. Clicking on a price displays the hotel’s name, features, and booking options. Overall, it’s no surprise that Google offers a powerful, no-frills hotel search engine for travelers who don’t want all the hard-sell aspects of cheap hotel sites and more commercial hotel search engines. (And yes, Google did surface that low-with-coupon hotel deal from Agoda.)

• One of the best hotel booking sites for last minute deals and “Hot Rates,” which hide the hotel name in order to give you a better rate (similar to Priceline’s Express Deals), Hotwire is a great option if you don’t mind a limited-details final booking; and you probably don’t if it’s short notice. 
• Hotwire’s Hot Rates descriptions feature so many details about the property, as well as a pretty narrow location radius, that you can sometimes figure out the hotel you’ll be booked in, although it’s still somewhat of a gamble. Hotwire is also partnered with reliable global hotel brands like Kimpton and Hyatt, so you can be more confident that you won’t end up with a ramshackle property.
• The savings vary depending on the destination, but Hot Rates are consistently much more competitive than the standard Hotwire rates, which aren’t always the best price compared to other hotel booking sites. The main qualm that most customers have with Hotwire is their “24/7 support,” which apparently can be pretty unhelpful despite always being available to you.

• Formerly a social media-only deals site, TravelPony has since expanded to help anyone in need of a deal on a hotel. 
• Great for domestic and international hotels, there are loads of filtering options to ensure you are getting exactly the type of place you are looking for. Reddit Is The Ultimate Travel Guide: How To Use It To Plan Your Next Trip

When my husband and I started planning a Hawaii vacation, we sat on the couch, laptops at the ready, our fingertips tap-dancing across our keyboards. We both knew exactly where to start: Reddit.

We divided and conquered. He scoured for dive sites and shops to check out. I looked for what else we should do when we weren't floating under the deep blue sea. That's how I discovered a farm that lets you milk a goat and an app that narrates your drive through a winding road known for beautiful views, but a treacherous climb.

Reddit lets you take travel planning a step further than most guidebooks, introducing you to locals or past visitors who will appraise your itinerary, offer unexpected suggestions, and provide up-to-date information. You can dig deep into specifics and learn whether to hike a certain trail in the rain, buy a certain SIM card at the airport, or avoid a bus line that doesn't work in the afternoons.

But you have to enjoy the hunt — and play by a few rules.

How to begin

Before you start asking people to share hidden gems in Paris or debate whether you should travel to New York or Portland for a long weekend, lurk a little. Check out the local subreddit of the place you want to go; there are often also tourism subreddits for specific locales. (For the uninitiated, subreddits are Reddit's topic-specific forums.)

My first stops for my Hawaii planning were subs focused on Maui and Hawaii visitors . I also searched "maui to do," "maui tips," and "maui hiking" from the search bar on Reddit's homepage. Reddit search leaves a lot to be desired, but it'll do if you have the patience to scroll for awhile. You may have better luck using Google to do a site search for Reddit and specific keywords.

Once you've done a bit of homework, go ahead and write your first post. But make sure to be specific. A big faux pas on travel-related posts is being too vague, said Lili Armstrong, a subreddit moderator. She's seen people post questions about what they should do in Asia with no details about which countries they were interested in, their budget, or their hobbies.

"For me, I really love museums, and if I say 'Hey, I'm going to be going to this city, what are some great museums?' There's gonna be someone else out there who loves museums, and because you gave that insight, they're gonna give you a very detailed post that you wouldn't have gotten if you hadn't said that," said the 33-year-old from Colorado.

And yes, travel-loving Redditors will write thorough responses. When Armstrong was planning a trip to Egypt, she posted a handful of questions to Reddit and received more than 30 detailed responses, from suggestions about what to do to cultural guidance. Before a recent weekend trip to Los Angeles, she shared where she was planning to stay and was warned that the traffic would be horrendous there so she picked another neighborhood.

She also looks at local subs for posts about weekly events like concerts, craft fairs, or farmer's markets.

A helpful supplement

Reddit can also supplement your other research. Faye Boyer, a 22-year-old from Georgia, likes to check out TripAdvisor and Expedia to find inexpensive places to stay, but she's skeptical of their rating and review systems. Once she finds somewhere she thinks may work, she'll write a post in a local sub asking if people have been there before or know anything about it.

"I don't normally trust those websites because if you see they have 4.2 stars, how many of those are actually authentic? How many of those are people who stayed there or employees who were told to write a good review," she explained.

A few years ago, Boyer was planning a trip to Ireland with her mother, and they were considering staying at a carriage house they'd found online. But the inn had very few reviews on other travel sites. When she asked Redditors if anyone had visited it before, she got enthusiastic responses.

"Everybody's like, 'yes, it's great, it's awesome,' and we went and stayed there and it really was," she said.

"One of the things I asked is: I would be a single female alone in a foreign country, how do I do this safely?"

Boyer is currently planning a return trip to Ireland, but this time she'll be traveling solo. She again went to Reddit and asked what route she should take, which hostels she should avoid, and how she could get around. She's also found the Ireland sub helpful for posting her itineraries so others can comment on whether they're overly ambitious or fill in any gaps.

"I was looking to see if anybody who's in Ireland could push me in a certain direction, so I knew I would get some of the best advice there. One of the things I asked is: I would be a single female alone in a foreign country, how do I do this safely? Is hitchhiking an option, is a bus an option? Everyone was like do not hitchhike."

While Armstrong, who also runs a travel blog , had tried using TripAdvisor forums, she found they weren't as active as Reddit. In addition to Reddit, the voracious planner also reads travel books and blogs.

I'm the same way. I tend to read about places to visit on a blog or news site and then search for specifics on Reddit. For example, I learned about that winding road I mentioned earlier, the Road to Hana, on another site, but it was on Reddit where I read about honking when rounding curves, where to get coconut ice cream along the way, and that we should download an app to narrate our journey.

A few years ago, I traveled to Iceland with my husband. We bought a Lonely Planet book but also turned to Reddit for advice. That's how we found a post listing free hot springs. At one of them, which was about a 10-minute walk off the road and near a glistening river, we were the only ones. Someone had also linked to a map they made of their trip around the country, which we downloaded through Maps.me to use offline during our weeklong road trip.

Giving back

Many travel junkies — I'm one of them — will shower anyone who'll listen with a stream of recommendations. Reddit's like that, but to the nth degree. Travel-related and location-related subs are filled with people who want to learn and share their experiences. You can lurk on Reddit, but you're expected to join in, too.

When Boyer saw someone seeking advice on where to ask their girlfriend to marry them while visiting Ireland, she jumped at the chance to suggest some of her favorite vistas, parks, and gardens, adding photos and weather information.

"People are very generous," she said. "If you ask a genuine question, they’re not gonna beat you down for it."

"Our communities really want to help you."

While most respondents are helpful, this is the internet, and every now and then someone may be snarky or trolly. Ignore it and don't take it personally. For every irksome poster, there are plenty more who actually want to help.

Reddit's travel troves aren't just for extremely-online millennials, either. Many of the regulars in the sub Armstrong moderates are older than her, and love to needle her for it. While a separate solo travel sub skews younger, she's also seen people ask about traveling on their own in their 50s and 60s and whether they could still stay at a hostel in their 40s. To which, she opined, of course you can.

If you savor spending hours panning for travel gold — and are comfortable talking to faceless strangers, then add Reddit to your vacation research repertoire. As Armstrong said, "our communities really want to help you."

Best and Worst Hotel Booking Sites for 2024

The well-known investment disclaimer “past performance is no guarantee of future results” could also apply to having a favorite hotel booking site. Hotel search engines that performed well a year ago can change for the worse and deliver poor results today. 

Frommer’s regularly dives into the data to determine the best hotel sites, and this year produced quite a shakeup in our top 10. Three onetime stalwarts ( Priceline , Expedia , and Hotels.com ) were driven off our list by newcomers, including one site that had never before earned a Frommer's Top 10 slot after eight years of trying. Meanwhile, one formerly mighty booking engine that once dawdled in the bottom half of our ranking has unexpectedly come roaring back and this year, it nearly nabbed the top spot. 

First, it helps to understand the playing field. There are basically three types of websites that people can use to find hotels: OTAs (online travel agencies); the hotels’ own websites , which may offer special member deals OTAs can’t match; and aggregators , or meta-search engines, which don’t actually handle reservations, but trawl both OTAs and hotel sites to return a list of results, then send you to your choice of them for final reservations.

We tested both OTAs and aggregators (and as a general rule, you should always double-check results from both types of sites against rates offered by the hotels’ own websites). Why include OTAs at all when there are aggregators that canvass them? Well, some aggregators don't comb through booking engines as well as they should. In fact, our champ for total number of hotels found in most cities was actually an OTA, and you'd think it would have been an aggregator that scans lots of websites. We blame algorithms.

A warning about booking: Hotel aggregator sites sometimes display results from booking services that post amazingly low prices but have sketchy track records for customer service. If a hotel booking website directs you to a company you’ve never heard of, before giving it a penny, do a quick search for reviews or scams associated with that business name, and also perform a quick reputation search (based on the website’s hometown) at the Better Business Bureau ( bbb.org ).  Also keep a close eye on fees, which are unregulated in the U.S. and can stack up fast, and don't pay much attention to user reviews of hotels—AI has made user reviews easy to rig with fakes.

When you're making reservations, remember that some OTAs will give you a discount of 4–6% if you sign in for free. Member savings on aggregator sites are less reliable, and usually only around 1–2%.  Finally, a tip for travelers with some technical savvy: To ensure you always get the actual total prices including all taxes and fees, consider using a virtual private network, or VPN, to do your hotel shopping through a server based in Ireland, where EU regulations require all those charges to be announced up front. Any server in continental Europe will actually do, but choosing Ireland has the benefit of automatically showing results in English. Clear your browser’s cookies first so the hotel sites won’t remember any previous visits.

We threw 54 room reservation scenarios at the major sites to determine which ones could find the lowest prices and the most options. We used the standard, non-member rates for all our tests, and when testing aggregators, we discarded price quotes from websites with sketchy reputations and only considered the prices from reputable resellers.

To start, we tallied the number of choices each contender could rustle up in four price categories in six major cities: San Francisco, Philadelphia, Rome, Paris, Hong Kong, and Buenos Aires.

Then, for each city, we searched for the lowest rates each site could find at four specific downtown hotels in varying price ranges for a mid-week, shoulder-season stay on the same date three months out. That advance purchase requirement assured we would see a level playing field for the same rooms on the same date, and it removed the influence of both high-season spikes and last-minute discounts.

We awarded points to hotel websites that found the lowest rates on a given hotel—and subtracted points if it returned higher prices than the others—in a rigorous, weighted system designed to determine which hotel reservations site saved us the most money consistently. We also paid extra attention to how honest websites were about disclosing mandatory added fees. If websites try to make rooms seem cheaper than they really are, we warn you.

So who succeeded on the best prices and who didn’t measure up? Read on... 

Trivago has fallen from #3 to the bottom half of our rankings. It did sometimes win the pricing game by finding a rate direct from the hotel (a trick that our #1 also knew), and it was usually average or better on price. That is, except in Buenos Aires, where Trivago returned the lowest number of hotel results of anyone, and it couldn’t even find a single quote for one of our test properties that other sites found easily. 

What’s more, it seems to favor its partners over you, the customer. Like other aggregators, it tended to push results from Booking.com and even then, it didn’t always lead with the lowest price it found. What good is a hotel booking site that hides the lowest prices? Even more concerning, when Trivago did lead with a too-good-to-be-true rate, it often came from from a notoriously dubious third-party site, including in its supposedly vetted "Trivago Book & Go" results. 

Trivago was also inconsistent. On its first try at the posh Paris pad, it claimed there were no rooms available. Since we had already tested a dozen other sites, we knew that couldn't possibly be true, so we ran the search again and, suddenly, up popped a good price. Had we not searched a second time, it would have failed our test. And what good is a hotel booking site where you have to search twice?

While Trivago has recently improved its filters—you can now get granular on things like price ranges or distance from a desired address (though it still lacks a handy “neighborhoods” filter)—Trivago was frankly more annoying to use than other top sites. It was also the only aggregator in our top 10 that never  gave an indication of how much taxes and fees were—you have to click over to the booking site for that. What good is a hotel search site that won’t tell you how much you’ll end up paying? 

Aggregator Skyscanner , one of the best airfare aggregators in the business ( and we ran the tests to prove it ), has also managed to build a decent hotel search engine, and this year, it debuts on the Frommer’s Top 10 with solid results that only once failed to find a below-average price—and that was for our budget Buenos Aires hotel where even our #2 stumbled and Trivago failed entirely. 

Skyscanner was particularly strong in Europe, and its filter set was fairly good. While Skyscanner didn’t offer the option to calculate full rates with taxes and fees the way some better-performing sites did, at least it acknowledged when they weren’t included. 

So why is Skyscanner just #7? Aside from mostly middlin’ price discoveries, it seemed to get its lowest rates from less-than-reliable sources like shifty online travel agencies. Some results were even culled from other aggregators and weren’t actually available once we clicked over. (To its credit, Skyscanner posts a disclaimer about this practice at the top of its results.). On the other hand, unlike some other search engines, it has partnered with a reputable OTA to offer direct bookings: Trip.com.

OTA Agoda seems to have settled comfortably into the middle of our results, falling one spot from last time but still ranking as the second-best OTA in general. Agoda was far and away the best site for reservations outside of North America and Europe. That makes sense, since it started as an Asia specialist. 

Aggregator The O.G. travel aggregator has bounced around in our ratings over the years, but it seems to be finding secure footing among the top five. Kayak was, impressively, one of only three sites that never returned a price or hotel count lower than the average. 

Kayak has a solid set of filters—including very nice fill-in window for location so you can name any landmark or address. It also gives you that crucial option to show rates inclusive of taxes and fees.

Since its launch in 2005, Reddit has become the go to place on the internet to discuss everything from politics to sport to global disasters. In 2018, it ranked as the third most visited in the United States , and boasted more than 200 million unique visitors every month. It uses a bulletin board system to discuss topics, while its subreddits are communities of users that focus on specific themes. A particularly common theme for subreddits is travel, where people can find information on nearly every location imaginable, as well as discovering itineraries, getting tips and advice or simply just gaining inspiration by looking at the photos and first hand experiences posted by the millions of users. Functioning much in the same way as a forum, anyone can post their thoughts and comments on each piece, adding their own opinion to create a more comprehensive and all-inclusive space for discussion. They are great alternatives to resources such as guidebooks, as they are constantly updating with the latest trends and come from millions of travellers with different perspectives.

For that reason, we have put together a complete list of the top ten subreddits concerning travel-related topics , from ones on camping and hiking to freelancing while on the go. Knowing where to find the communities containing the most useful information on all things travel can be a great resource, whether planning, or already on, a trip, offering an alternative to travel guidebooks and documentaries . They can be accessed by anyone with an account, which is free to sign up to, meaning it does not discriminate against those who are more budget-conscious. We took into account a range of different factors when reviewing each subreddit to ensure that we were only presenting the most helpful ones available, picking out each one’s highlights, what makes it unique, and its potential drawbacks. The pros and cons are also listed in an easy-to-read set of bullet points below each review.

One of the first factors that was considered when reviewing the various subreddits was the variety of content featured on the feed. Scrolling down a page full of text only, although maybe informative, is not considered one the most engaging ways to learn about a topic, and can make the website appear dull or monotonous. Instead, subreddits that feature a wide range of content, including text, images, photos and videos will make it far more interesting for its users, who can gain knowledge without having to read the entire time. Often, a photograph can say more about a place than someone describing it, allowing the viewer to make their own mind up about whether they would like to visit or not, while at the same time making the subreddit more stimulating in general. That being said, r/travelphotos is, as the name suggests, choc-a-bloc with fantastic, inspirational photos, however as a place to gain details, tips and advice on places, it is lacking. Hence, when assessing the subreddits, we made sure to take a look at the content on offer and how varied it was.

Another factor that was taken into account when assessing the subreddits were the guidelines that had been put in place by the admin of the group. As a platform to which anyone with an email address can sign up, the content that is shared is largely uncensored and can vary significantly from group to group. Therefore, it is the role of the subreddit administrators to put in place a set of rules as to the type of content that can and cannot be posted. One of the typical rules on travel subreddits, in addition to the most obvious, is one against the sharing of poltiical propaganda or discussion. This is to prevent the group from alienating certain people and helps keep the content focused on travel-related themes rather than going off on a tangent. A group that is seen to adopt a particular political leaning is not only largely irrelevant to travel, it makes it also appear exclusive and can damage its reputation as a whole. Be that as it may, some subreddit administrators take the job of creating guidelines beyond the call of duty and end up creating a list that is far too longwinded and pedantic. The subreddit DigitalNomad, for example, features a very strict set of rules that doesn’t give the users room to assume anything and that would almost have to be printed off and kept by your side in order to avoid breaking them. For that reason, we looked at the guidelines of each to ensure quality control, as well as to make sure that there was a degree of flexibility to keep the content interesting.

Recommending subreddits that were only relevant to one particular group was something that we tried to avoid doing by finding the ones that appeared, instead, to the widest demographic. Upon reading through various travel blogs, we discovered that many only appeal to those who have the funds to engage in ‘ luxury travel ’, such as staying in boutique hotels , eating out at expensive restaurants and doing activities like skydiving. Hence, we strived, when assessing the various subreddits, to find the ones that catered to all budgets and backgrounds, be it a French traveler on a shoestring or a retired American couple who have just sold their law firm. The subreddit r/freelance was one example of a group which, although useful, seemed mostly to provide for those based in the United States , as the majority of the tips and advice concerned topics such as paying tax in the US.
