What is a Via verde?
Vías Verdes (literally, "green-ways") are old disused railway lines that have been recovered and reconditioned for use by walkers and cyclists. Exploring them is a different, enjoyable and environmentally friendly way of getting to know Spain, its culture and its landscapes. Of over 7,600 km of disused railway lines that existed in Spain in 1993, nearly 2,500 km have been converted into 120 Greenways. They make an attractive and sustainable resource for the public to enjoy the natural environment and rich railway heritage. An advice from Cycletours: don't forget to bring a flashlight or bicycle light. The train tunnels can be dark.

Mallorca stands out for it's incredible cycling culture. Having completed multiple tours in France, Italy and other regions of Europe; which are all magnificent; Mallorca stands out for it's incredible cycling culture, amazing network of roads that challenge even the world's strongest cyclists, and the comfortable surroundings that define a Trek Travel experience.
Gary, Trek Travel Guest
Excellent trip design! Upon completion we certainly felt we saw all that we wanted to see yet were physically challenged in the process (which we wanted). The trip was an ideal balance between leisure and exercise.
Mark, Trek Travel Guest

Our destination is Sa Foradada, a restaurant with a privileged location set into the cliffs of the Tramauntana coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site and accessible only by boat or a tough hike. The same family has lived, fished, and cooked at the restaurant for over 40 years, with no electricity. They cook on open fires which is the family secret behind the fragrant, smoky scent of their famous paellas . After a delicious lunch you'll cruise back to Soller with plenty of time to sit back and relax by the hotel pool, wander through the port, or maybe take another dip in the crystalline Mediterranean Sea. If you would rather ride instead of sailing today, your guides will have an option available. Our destination is Sa Foradada, a restaurant with a stunning location set in the cliffs of the Tramauntana coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site and only accessible by boat (or a tough hike). The same family has lived, fished, and cooked at the restaurant for over 40 years, with no electricity. They cook on open fires, which is the family secret behind the fragrant, smoky scent of their famous paellas. After a delicious lunch you'll cruise back to Sóller with time to sit back and relax, wander through the port, or maybe take another dip in the crystalline Mediterranean Sea. If you would rather ride instead of sailing today, your guides will have an option available. This evening we’ll shuttle to Barretes Restaurant for a spectacular dining experience in an unforgettable setting with stunning panoramic views. Their cuisine offers a discovery of the uniqueness of Balearic gastronomy, while products are prepared with the utmost respect for the diversity that mother nature provides. Tonight’s dinner is a magical way to celebrate the island of Mallorca. Please note : On select trip dates the restaurant Sa Foradada will be replaced by restaurant Es Vergeret in Cala Tuent. Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Most port conditions require that ships tie up alongside each other, in which case you may need to walk through another ship to access our ship. This is a part of river cruising due to its popularity. You may experience obstructed views from your stateroom when the ship is double-docked, but as soon as we set sail again your beautiful views will be restored.

Is Barcelona a good biking city?
You bet it is! Barcelona is an absolute gem for cyclists, thanks to its flat terrain, pleasant climate, and an impressive network of bike paths that spans over 200 kilometers. Whether you’re a novice biker or a seasoned cyclist, you’ll find the city inviting with its biking-friendly streets and scenic routes.
Barcelona has invested significantly in making itself a cyclist-friendly city, and the number of people cycling daily is testimony to that. To top it off, you’ll find many places in Barcelona offering bike rentals , making it even easier for tourists to join the cycling fun.
Is it easy to bike around Barcelona?
Biking around Barcelona is incredibly easy! The city’s layout is quite straightforward, and the cycling lanes are clearly marked, ensuring a seamless ride even for first-time visitors. Moreover, Barcelona is reasonably flat, with only a few hilly areas, making it accessible for all fitness levels.
Barcelona also has a public bike-sharing program known as Bicing, which is perfect for short trips around the city. However, do note that this service is mainly designed for residents, and tourists might need to rely on traditional bike rentals.
Is it safe to cycle in Barcelona?
It’s very safe to cycle in Barcelona! The city takes the safety of cyclists seriously, with separated bike lanes and traffic-calming measures in place throughout the city. Plus, the local culture is respectful towards cyclists, which adds another layer of security.
Of course, just like anywhere else, it’s important to follow road safety rules, use hand signals, wear a helmet, and stay alert. This includes for pedestrians, who aren’t always perfect at checking for bikes before crossing bike paths
Remember as well that bike theft can be an issue in Barcelona, so always lock up your bike securely when you’re not using it.
Where can I bike ride in Barcelona?
There’s no shortage of fantastic places to bike ride in Barcelona! From the charming old streets of the Gothic Quarter to the sunny beachside paths of Barceloneta, the options are plentiful. The Parc de la Ciutadella is a great starting point for any bike tour, with beautiful scenery and plenty of paths.
For a more extended ride, you can cycle up Montjuïc Hill for a breathtaking view of the city. If you want a break from urban life, consider taking a bike ride to Collserola Natural Park, a lush green oasis just outside the city.
No matter what your preference, there’s a bike path in Barcelona that’s perfect for you!
Can tourists rent bikes in Barcelona?
Yes, tourists can definitely rent bikes in Barcelona, and it’s a popular way to explore the city! There are numerous bike rental shops scattered throughout the city, offering a wide variety of options from traditional bikes to electric bikes.
You can usually rent a bike for a few hours, a whole day, or even several days depending on your needs. In addition to standalone bike rental shops, tour operators will provide bikes as part of guided or self-guided bike tours.
It’s a flexible, eco-friendly, and fun way to discover Barcelona at your own pace!
Do you have to wear a helmet on a bike in Barcelona?
Legally speaking, helmets are only mandatory for cyclists under 16 years old in urban areas, but they are highly recommended for all riders regardless of age. When you’re biking outside of urban areas and on interurban roads, the law requires that all cyclists wear a helmet.
Despite the legal aspect, wearing a helmet is always a smart choice as it provides essential protection and can prevent serious injuries in case of an accident. Most bike rental shops in Barcelona will provide you with a helmet when you rent a bike.
Can you bike on La Rambla?
Technically, yes, you can bike on La Rambla, but it’s not recommended due to the heavy pedestrian traffic. La Rambla is one of the busiest pedestrian areas in Barcelona, and navigating it on a bike can be challenging and stressful.
If you must pass through La Rambla, it’s better to walk your bike through the crowd to avoid accidents.
There are many other biking-friendly routes nearby that are safer and more enjoyable, such as the beautiful seafront promenade in Barceloneta or the wide avenues of Eixample.
Can you cycle on the pavement in Barcelona?
In Barcelona, cycling on the pavement is generally not allowed unless the pavement is wider than five meters and the pedestrian flow is low. Cyclists are encouraged to use bike lanes and shared spaces instead.
If the pavement is the only option and it meets the above conditions, cyclists should ride at a walking pace and always give priority to pedestrians.
Barcelona has an extensive network of bike lanes and routes designed specifically for cyclists, so you’ll often find it unnecessary and less convenient to cycle on the pavement. Understanding and respecting these rules helps ensure a safe and enjoyable cycling experience for everyone in the city.

E-bike, Vineyard Tour, Wine Tasting & Sailing Experience from Barcelona
Friday 11 February, 2022 we launched a new tour: E-bike, Vineyard Tour, Wine Tasting and a Sailing Tour. This tour is designed to get different experiences of Barcelona. During this tour, you will bike along the coast, taste typical Alella wine, and have a sailing experience. A unique space that will make you connect with nature and enjoy an unforgettable moment. Curious what the tour is and what it looks like? Enjoy reading this blog!
How will the day look like?
The tour started at the E-bike company in the center of Barcelona. Here we got a small introduction about the E-bikes. A tour guide guided us along the beautiful Catalan coast to Alella. This route is around 1/1.5 hours, including some stops for pictures. The route is close to the sea, mostly flat, and easy for any level.
The route to Alella
Arrived in Alella, the place where the Vineyard is. Alella is a family winery in a 15th-century farmhouse among vineyards, overlooking the village of Alella and the Mediterranean Sea. Here we had a tour through the vineyard, to see the property with the 14 hectares of vineyards planted for over 40 years. After the vineyard tour, it was time to taste all the different types of wine that they produce. Besides the wine, we ate some Spanish snacks.
Back to Barcelona by Sailing boat
After the wine tasting, it was time to go to our next activity, the sailing experience. At Port Masnou the sailing boat and skipper were waiting for us to bring us back to Barcelona. First, we saw Barcelona’s surroundings from the road during biking. Then at the end, we saw Barcelona and its surroundings from the sea on the sailing boat.
This day trip (approx. 5,5 hours) will start in the morning around 10.00 and will finish in the afternoon around 15.30/16.00. Bring your sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, swimsuit, and towel if you wish to jump into the sea.
You can book the experience right here: E-bike, Vineyard Tour, Wine Tasting & Sailing Experience from Barcelona

Our communication with Rana at Adventure Himalayan Travels & treks was good, the reply was always quick and he replied to all our questions and inquiries. We also met shortly our first night in Kathmandu for greetings and introduction to our guide Harka. Harka is a great guy with lots of humour and an excellent guide. He made sure that we had everything we needed on the trek at all times. Whether it was keeping track on bookings, go in advance to order lunch or helping out with the bikes so they always was in good condition. You name it and Harka fix. We felt real lucky with such an experienced and pro guide. Absolutely worth a little xtra pay. The route and scenery was awesome both up and down, and on the way down from Thurong pass towards Pokhara we went trough some awesome downhill and real fun singel trails. The ride in general was at times quite hard and bumpy and also quite technical, so a little experience in advance is nice, but not a necessity you just need to go real slow at times. All in all great experience, totally recommend and much more fun to bike than hike.

Moselle Bike & Barge
Trip was good in many ways. Would like better written instructions for self-guided ride along with potential stops to see. Guide was effective but English could be better. Felt that other guide was giving better description to other language. Boat staff and food were excellent. One big draw back was W-Fi connection. At best was weak all the time. When we tried to pay bar tab at the end, the interne connection would not allow the cards to be processed.
Scotland by Bike and Boat
This is an all inclusive tour. We were well fed, excellent meals, fantastic itinerary, and thoughtful crew and guides. Biking is an excellent way to see the country.
Bike and Barge: Amsterdam to Bruges Plus! Belgium's Breweries
The boat and crew were fantastic. Accommodations on board were very nice. Bike routes kept the cyclist off the main roads and scenery was very nice. Food was excellent, and mileage was sufficient and cyclist could ride more miles at the end of each day if desired. I would recommend this tour for those folks who like flat easy riding and not having to pack and repack each day.

Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon
My first bike and barge trip, it was a wonderful experience! Well planned. The crew was great, clearly working together well. Nice to see. Irene's dinners were as good as any following restaurant meals in Avignon and Paris. Yum! Sorry I didn't take pictures of her delicious dishes before eating them. Two criticisms - as another woman observed, there should have been two tour guides, with one riding sweep. That responsibility shouldn't be left to us. Also, the A/C in my cabin was way too cold. Overall, it was tremendous! Looking forward to the next one; hope so anyway! Thanks..
Bike and Barge: Amsterdam to Bruges
It was as advertised, an energetic but relatively simple trip to some great locations. We’d go again in a heartbeat!
Great Taste Trail & Beyond, Bike, Hike & Sail
This was an excellent and well organised tour. We really enjoyed the balance of cycling and hiking and also the less strenuous activities. This was a great way to explore the north coast of the South Island. Our guide, Rob, was excellent. He was enthusiastic at the same time as being relaxed, and we loved learning all about New Zealand from him. Many thanks Rob and Adventure South

Very enjoyable tour and a unique chance to live on an active sailing ship for a week. Expert guides, captain and crew who were very friendly and helpful. The scenery is as beautiful as expected. Pleasant fellow travellers. Highly recommended.

Helmets are mandatory for all cyclists in Turkey , and Croatia , and for minors in several other European countries. While not obligatory elsewhere, we recommend bringing your own for safety. Helmets are available for rent on our tours.
You’re welcome to bring your own bicycle on most tours. Please confirm space availability on your chosen vessel in advance. Note that we are not liable for any loss or damage to personal bicycles. If you don’t have your bicycle, you can rent it on our tours.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended to enjoy the tours, which typically involve 40-60 kilometers of cycling daily, averaging around 5 hours of riding.
Our tours are designed to immerse you in the experience, hence a support vehicle is not part of the journey. Participants are encouraged to complete the daily cycling stages with their fellow cyclists.
To ensure the integrity of our rental bikes and your safety, we do not allow personal pedals to be attached to them.
While our routes are planned for full-day adventures, certain tours may offer the flexibility to return to the ship earlier, subject to the ship’s docking capabilities.
The adventure each day can span from 30 to 60 kilometers, with the time spent cycling influenced by your pace and the number of stops to soak in the scenery.
Our guides converse fluently in Dutch, English, and German, with some also proficient in French or Italian. Briefings are conducted in English and sometimes in German.
The number of companions on your journey will vary, with smaller ships often at full capacity and larger vessels typically filled to 80-90%.
Accommodations range from cozy standard cabins to luxurious superior suites, with each ship offering its unique array of options.
Stay connected with Wi-Fi available across all our vessels, with specifics outlined in our Travel Preparation guide.
To maintain the serene ambiance of our ships, laundry services are not offered on board.
Some ships equip cabins with hairdryers, while others can provide them upon request.
Our ships maintain a smoke-free environment in cabins and indoor public areas, with designated smoking zones available on deck on most vessels.
To ensure the comfort of all our guests, pets are not permitted on board, with the exception of crew members’ dogs that are familiar with life at sea.
Seasickness is uncommon due to the stability of our vessels and the typically calm waters on our routes.
Parking solutions are tailored to each departure point, with options like P+R facilities and valet services detailed in your pre-travel boarding information.
You will receive comprehensive travel details to your ship’s location upon booking, including information on parking and available transfer services.
Our guests are generally between the ages of 45 and 65, bringing a wealth of life experiences to share.
Our tours attract a global audience, from the far reaches of Scandinavia to the southern tips of Africa, and from the Americas to Asia.
Packing light is key, as cabin space is optimized for comfort and not for large luggage.
Our tour leaders are equipped to assist with minor issues, and in case of emergencies, the local emergency number 112 should be contacted.
For your safety, helmets are available for rent on most tours, and are included with our Premium tour packages.
You are welcome to enjoy the amenities on board instead of cycling. Please inform the tour leader or crew of your plans.
Our tours proceed rain or shine, with your safety as our top priority. You have the freedom to cycle or remain on board, based on your comfort with the weather conditions.
Weather conditions can vary from country to country and from season to season, so we suggest preparing for everything from rain to bright sunshine. For a detailed forecast, AccuWeather is a reliable source.
Not always. We suggest you bring your own equipment if you plan to snorkel.
Life-saving boats and life jackets are available on all ships and can be found in marked wardrobes on the deck, in the salon, or under the beds in cabins. In case you cannot swim, it is important to inform the crew and the captain. While on the ship, it is essential to pay attention to the following safety measures:
The stairs on the vessels can be steep and narrow, so it’s important to be careful while going up or down. The decks can also be very slippery, especially in wet conditions, so passengers should use caution and hold onto the railings when walking around the vessel.
Climbing the foremast, jumping off the deck during the cruise, or going too far from the vessel during swim pauses are strictly prohibited.
In the busy high season, harbors can become congested, and vessels may have to dock beside each other, so it is essential to exercise caution when moving between them. Crew members are available to assist passengers who require help. However, the cruise is not recommended for those with limited mobility or in wheelchairs.
The length of the cycling routes planned for each day is an estimate and takes into account local conditions and possible detours or shortcuts. The sailing and cycling routes may be adjusted depending on weather conditions and the abilities of the cyclists on board. Typically, departures are in the morning, usually after breakfast.
Bringing and consuming your own beverages on the vessel is prohibited. Instead, you can order drinks from the vessel’s salon, which serves as a restaurant, living room, and bar. The bar offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. If you would like a drink that is unavailable at the time, please inform the crew, and they will do their best to arrange it for you at the next port of call.

Australian cycling star Jay Vine avoids spinal surgery after horror crash in Spain
- Vine in neck brace for six weeks putting Olympic bid in peril
- Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard also badly injured
Australian cycling star Jay Vine will not have to have surgery on the spine injuries he suffered when falling heavily in a horror crash at the Itzulia Basque Country race.
His UAE Team Emirates medical director Dr Adrian Rotunno reported on Saturday that last year’s Tour Down Under winner Vine would remain in hospital and would be in a neck brace for up to six weeks.
But after suffering what the team described as “a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures” in Thursday’s crash in northern Spain, there had been initial fears that the 28-year-old would need to be operated on.
“After examining MRI and final clinical assessment, thankfully no surgery will be necessary for Jay. The fractures are stable enough not to warrant surgical correction,” Rotunno said in a team statement.
“Jay will remain in hospital over the following days to allow for ongoing observations and further recovery. He will be in a neck brace for up to six weeks but will be able to start with general body rehab from next week.”
Vine looked to have come off worst of the dozen who fell in the mass crash which caused other luminaries, including double Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard and double world champion Remco Evenepoel, to also suffer serious injuries.
Vingegaard suffered a collapsed lung, a pulmonary contusion, broken ribs and a broken collarbone, with his title defence in doubt, while Evenepoel needed surgery on a fractured collarbone and shoulder blade.
After the Canberra rider slid at high speed on a descent into a concrete ditch at the side of a road, he lay motionless while being treated and TV pictures left his wife Bre, a former cyclist herself, fearing the worst.
Bre, who is pregnant, watched in horror as television images showed Jay being treated while motionless at the side of the bend.
“I will admit when I saw the live coverage of him just lying there not moving for such a long time, I genuinely wasn’t sure if I still had a husband and if the worst had happened,” she posted on Instagram.
“As soon as the team had comms it was communicated to me ASAP. And I’m so genuinely grateful for how quickly they got the news to me.”
She said she jumped in her car at their Andorra home and arrived at the hospital’s ICU six hours later.
“I will let UAE share his medical updates when we have determined the extent of the injuries. But for now he is ‘okay’, and we are still considering all our options. The team are making sure he and I are getting the best care possible,” she added.
after newsletter promotion
“There’s a lot to unpack from the incident, and we will have discussions with the relevant people later on, but for now my focus is on our family and helping Jay through this.
“I’ve followed every single kilometre Jay’s raced and trained, I’ve seen every crash, and every triumph.
“This crash is going to be one that sticks with us for a long time, but like Jay has done every single day before, he will fight and come back stronger than ever with the #getwreckedjay spirit that we love.
“It’s an odd phrase I’ll give you that, but goes back to all those years ago when we were racing mountain bikes. Long story short: it means give it everything you’ve got, sh*t will happen and things will go wrong, but keep fighting.
“And that is what this man continues to do on a daily basis and we will do again together.”
Vine’s rise has been one of cycling’s most inspiring, as the man who was discovered as an e-sports specialist, was snapped up by a pro team and has since become a Grand Tour stage winner and Tour Down Under champion.
But days after starting the Basque tour with a brilliant second place in the time trial, this latest in a catalogue of injuries he’s suffered will keep him out of the Giro d’Italia, where he would have been one of Tadej Pogacar’s key lieutenants in the mountains.
Double Tour de France champion Pogacar offered his best wishes to his teammate, whose Olympic hopes for 2024 are also surely over.

Verstappen back to winning ways to lead Red Bull 1-2 in Japan
World champion Max Verstappen got back to winning ways on Sunday with a third straight pole-to-flag victory at the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix, leading team mate Sergio Perez across the line for a Red Bull 1-2 at Suzuka.
Evan Bouchard broke a deadlock and Connor McDavid collected two more assists in his quest to join elite company as the visiting Edmonton Oilers claimed a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames in a hard-fought Battle of Alberta clash Saturday night.
Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard injured in multi-cyclist crash
Jonas Vingegaard, the two-time reigning Tour de France champion, was badly injured in a multi-cyclist crash Thursday during a race in Spain.
Several other top names in the sport were also hurt as a number of competitors in the Itzulia Basque Country event skidded off the road at a sharp turn during a descent.
Vingegaard’s team said that the 27-year-old Dane suffered a broken collarbone and “several” broken ribs. He was set to remain in a hospital as a precaution, said Team Visma | Lease a Bike, after abandoning the multistage race.
Also forced to abandon were Remco Evenepoel, who suffered a broken collarbone and right scapula in the incident, and Olympic gold medalist Primoz Roglic, the race leader who was said to have avoided any fractures. Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Roglic entered the day in second, third and sixth place, respectively, in the International Cycling Union’s world rankings .
Vingegaard was shown on a race telecast being taken to an ambulance on a stretcher while wearing an oxygen mask and a neck brace. Other cyclists were initially strewn along the bend in the course in various degrees of physical distress.
An American cyclist, Sean Quinn, suffered a concussion in addition to a broken sternum and abrasions, according to his team. Others notably injured in the crash included Jay Vine, who suffered spinal and cervical fractures, and Steff Cras, who was listed with vertebral and rib fractures, as well as with “several hematomas.”
Cyclists Alexander Cepeda, Quinten Hermans and Natnael Tesfatsion were also involved in the crash.

Thursday’s stage, the fourth of six as the race winds through Basque country in northern Spain, was altered after the incident to remove a section involving a mountain pass. Ultimately, the rest of the stage was neutralized, with times recorded in it not counting toward the general classification. The six cyclists leading the peloton when the crash unfolded just behind them were allowed to compete for a sprint finish. Louis Meintjes won the stage, while Mattias Skjelmose rose to the top of the overall standings.
“It’s a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery,” Skjelmose said afterward. “My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader’s jersey.”
It remains to be seen if Vingegaard, who came into the Basque tour off a win in the Tirreno-Adriatico race, can recover in time to try to win the Tour de France for a third year in a row. Cycling’s top event will start in Italy on June 29 and end, for the first time in a century, in a locale other than Paris (the final stage this year will take place in Nice) because of the Olympics.

Sport Jay Vine's wife says she feared the worst after cycling crash in Spain, as rider joins Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel on long road to recovery
Jay Vine's wife has revealed how she feared he might have died when the star Australian cyclist was lying prostrate in a ditch after a dreadful crash in the Itzulia Basque Country race .
But Bre Vine, a cyclist herself, predicted that his fighting spirit, as he recovers in a Spanish hospital after suffering fractured vertebrae, would ensure the UAE Team Emirates rider will return to the saddle "stronger than ever".
The team reported after Thursday's crash that the 28-year-old from Canberra had been left with "a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures" as he came off perhaps worst of all the big-name riders in the mass incident in northern Spain.
Double Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard suffered a collapsed lung, a pulmonary contusion, broken ribs and a broken collarbone, with his title defence in doubt, while double world champ Remco Evenepoel needed surgery on a fractured collarbone and shoulder blade.
Bre, who is pregnant, watched in horror as television images showed Jay being treated while motionless at the side of the bend where he had slid off.

Great trip, excellent accommodation.
· andalusia: southern spain.
Challenging trip, but excellent value for money and quality of accommodation was best we'veexperienced in over 10 years of cycling holidays. Recommend book extra nights - Seville, Carmona, Arcos. Jerez & Cadiz all suitable. If returning to Seville etc by train book early as even in November trains were very busy. Good scenery on days 4 & 5.

Biking is the best way to visit any city and Barcelona is very bike friendly. E-bikes are the future, as I say” people who walk must not know how to ride and if you don’t ride an e-bike you are only getting half the fun”
Fantastic way to get an overview of Valencia
Perfect way to see Valencia… safe & informative tour! Our guide Christopher was excellent. He was so friendly & shared his love of Valencia We would definitely recommend this tour company.
Great history and personal insights
· bilbao central bike tour.
I ended up being on a solo tour, which was a real treat. My guide Willie was friendly and knowledgeable. He grew up in Bilbao and saw a lot of the changes of the last few decades. Was interesting hearing his childhood remembrances and enjoying his clear love of the town. I just wish I had managed to do this as my first activity in Bilbao!
Second time on this trip and it was well worth a second visit!
· best of catalonia cycle touring.
This trip is extremely well organized, with lovely hotels, great breakfasts and so much variety in the bike routes. Although it has some challenging uphills, a lot of it is down hill, which is great fun. There is so much scenic beauty - going from the Pyrenees down to the Mediterranean Coast. It was really nice to stay in the same hotel two separate times (one right on the Mediterranean and another next to a castle) but still do loop rides which were fun. We found Daniel, owner of Creative Catalonia, was a most personable and easy going guy. We had a problem with a bike and within two hours (during which time we enjoyed one of the many superb lunches we had along the way) he had arrived where we were and fixed the bike. This is still one of my most favorite rides out of the ten tours that we have done over the years.
· Medieval Villages of Catalonia
A nice combination of biking and opportunities to experience medieval Catalonian history.
Spain Was Wonderful!
Our first trip to Spain was fantastic. This was not our first bike tour we were much better prepared. We had some difficulty navigating the Barcelona airport and train station to get to Girona. Once we arrived however, all was absolutely beautiful. I cannot give enough praise to Daniel. His briefing, preparation of the bikes and tips on stops along the various routes was excellent. He was a joy to work with. The only comment was to possibly reconsider staying one night in Monells instead of two. Monells is a very charming village but very small and limited sites to see. Otherwise, I would not change a thing! You will not be disappointed.
Which way to Santiago
· camino de santiago: a pilgrim’s route from astorga to santiago.
E-bikes review 3 of the 4 bikes were great, they had13.5 ah batteries. They gave me a different larger bike that had a 11ah battery. Out of the 6 days , ran out of battery power 4 days. Trying to pedal uphill on a dead battery on a E-battery was very difficult and delayed us everyday. Not good, we need compensated for faulty eqyuipment. The other 3 batteries, barely had enough power to last throughout the day. We had to charge at lunch the one 11ah battery and still did not last. Either need larger batteries
Had one flat tire. The tread on this front tire had no tread at all. When we replaced , found that the tube had a repair patch that blew out.
The one white bike had missing chain guard. My right pant leg got all grease marks Which has to be trashed and thrown away
Hotel review -
All hotels were excellent, good rooms, good breakfast, great service. Thank you
Customer service review
We had one person who got hurt on a bike crash the second day and could not continue to bike. Venessa at customer service was excellent in coordinating and getting her to next stop for rest of tour
Other concerns -
We got a gps unit, was useless, did not help one bit, not worth renting We used phone directions when we got off track
As directions on flip chart several days got us off track and added many miles to the day. Suggestions to add more landmarks to turns
Will definitely use Biketours.com again This was first time users, and kinda know now what toexpect
Thank you Rich, Rosemay, Lisa, Francine

· cycling spain's ebro river.
I've been on several bike tours; this was by far my favorite. The routes were well-planned with views that took you from the origin of the Ebro through the mountains through gorges, along rich valleys & fields, ending in the celebrated Rioja Valley- with charming historical towns all along the way. Detailed GPS instructions made the routes easy to follow, allowing you to go at your own pace and stop to take advantage of the many interesting sights. My first time on an e-road bike and I'm a convert- the equipment was excellent. The local team was very helpful and supportive, making sure everything ran smoothly. I hope to do this tour again!
Competence paired with joy
The bike tour was sensationally put together, no sightseeing of the usual tourist points, but insider information. Our local guide was not only funny and competent, but also imparted his knowledge with acting talent. Wonderful. Thank you very much for three great hours.
OMG....Absolutely amazing!!
· basque country by road bike (upscale lodging).
This was my first bike tour and exceeded all expectations. I was with others who had been on dozens of bike tours and they said this was one of the best (if not, THE best) for multiple reasons. 1. Bike Tour Company (Bizi Cycle Tours) - company started just a few years ago by married couple. Virginia Berasategui is former pro triathlete and is the guide and husband (Ander) is responsible for business end/logistics/food. They are a fun couple who were raised in the area seem to know everyone. Based on ability, they can and will adapt routes. 2. Location - Beautiful location for riding...beaches, countryside views, mountains, and vineyards. This trip incorporates 4 days of road and 2 days of gravel cycling through vineyards. Tour de France (2023) took place here during first three stages and this tour includes many of the same roads. Roads are pristine since they were paved in advance of Tour. 3. This tour combines cycling AND gastronomy (and wine!)...and amazing experiences. Each full day experience was unexpected and seem to top the day prior. Bike tours typically emphasis either cycling or the food. This tour combines both in a big way. 4. Price: this tour is a great deal and was longer and included more that the large American tour companies. None of the 'big boys' offer this same type of experience/routes. Other: the terrain here can be challenging in Basque. Beginner or causal cyclists should go with electric bikes. If you like going on longer rides and/or like to push yourself, this tour is for you! My group wanted the full cycling (and eating) challenge, and we received it!

· camino de santiago: from porto to santiago de compostela.
Loved this trip along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. We did the self guided tour. The terrain was not exactly what we expected, but enjoyed the challenge- harder than we expected because of the terrain. Along the coast for the first two days, boardwalks, sand dunes, cobblestones, bike paths, trails in the woods, boulders, dirt paths and roads. The App to follow was wonderful and accurate. They gave us restaurant suggestions for both along the way and once we reached our daily destination-all spot on. I recommend the 4 star hotel option and maybe splurge for one 5 star. Parador Hotel in Baiona was fantastic.
A lovely way to see Bilbao along the river
· bilbao underground culture bike tour.
It’s a great way to spend an afternoon in Bilbao. Our tour was on Sunday morning so the traffic was light. One of our cyclists fell off the bike but we were passing the bike shop on a loop of the river so they replaced the bike immediately and offered plasters and bandages. Our guide was very nice and showed us plenty of interesting street art en route. The tour was three hours long so you would need a moderate level of fitness. Good value and fun!
An amazing, exhilarating and exciting trip
My husband and I are so happy we chose to explore southern Spain by bike. This was a very different trip than we were used to but it was the best way to see this beautiful part of the country. Even our mis-adventures (truth be told, the way out of Seville in 90 plus weather was tough and some of the directions were a little off) left us laughing like kids (we are in our 60s)! We will definitely explore other bike tour options with this company. I will never forget the beautiful and endless landscape of sunflowers. Breathtaking! And the accommodations after a long, hot ride were simply outstanding. We would do it again in a heartbeat!
Awesome until the last day!
My girlfriend and I did this trip on hybrid bikes in early June and it was a great trip. We are intermediate riders and have done lots of riding in Canada but this is our first bike trip. The hotels (Hotel Fernando 111, Parador Carson’s, Hotel Andalou, Parados Arcos de la Frontera, Hotel Villa Jerez, Parador Cadiz) were excellent, there was a nice mix of different biking routes/paths, some more challenging than others (because of the heat) and our luggage arrived at the hotels safely and promptly. Everything went as planned except on the last day of our ride, from Jerez to Cadiz, where the directions and roads in the guide book did not match the GPS . We got lost a few times as the directions were very confusing! We gave up when we got lost in San Fernando and decided to hop on the train for the last 10km of our journey. Some suggestions : *Better and bigger GPS *Rewrite the instructions from Jerez to Cadiz * more communication as there was no communication at all the minute we started the trip and nothing after the trip either.

Vingegaard breaks collarbone and several ribs in crash at race in Spain. Evenepoel also injured

MADRID (AP) — Two-time defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard broke his collarbone and several ribs Thursday in a crash at the Tour of Basque Country that also caught up Olympic gold medalist Primoz Roglič and Remco Evenepoel, who also sustained a broken collarbone.
Evenepoel, one of the favorites for the road race at the Paris Games, also has a broken right shoulder blade and was scheduled return to Belgium on Friday for surgery on his collarbone, his team said.
Vingegaard was hardly moving as he was put in an ambulance wearing an oxygen mask and neck brace after the crash occurred with less than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) left in the fourth stage.
“Examinations at the hospital have revealed that he has a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. He remains in hospital as a precaution,” Team Visma said of the 27-year-old Danish rider, who won the race in Spain a year ago.
The accident happened as riders were making a right-hand turn, and one rider’s front tire appeared to slip out and send other riders off the road. There were some large rocks in the area, though it wasn’t clear if any of the riders hit them.
Video and images of the crash showed riders strewn alongside the road, including in a concrete drainage ditch.
Vingegaard won both races he entered this season at Tirreno-Adriatico and the Gran Camino in Spain. He is considered the heavy favorite to triumph again at the Tour, which ends with a time trial in Nice this year because of the Paris Olympics.
“Over the radio we heard Jonas was involved in a big crash,” Visma sports director Addy Engels told Eurosport. “We immediately saw that it didn’t look good when we arrived to him. Fortunately, he was conscious. Jonas is now being examined at the hospital. We are waiting for any updates now.”
Evenepoel, who won stages at the Giro d’Italia and Spanish Vuelta last year, hit the pavement and landed in a wooded area during Thursday’s crash, though he appeared to be walking away while clutching his chest.
Evenepoel’s team, Soudal Quick-Step, later confirmed that the Belgian “suffered a fracture to his right collarbone and his right scapula.” The team said he will undergo surgery “and further examination” at the hospital in Belgium.
Roglič was leading the overall race despite a heavy fall on Wednesday. He was one of the riders that ended up in the drainage ditch, and he was later spotted walking to a Bora-Hansgrohe team car and driving away with a team staff.
The injuries to Roglič came one day after his teammate, Lennard Kämna, was hit by an oncoming vehicle and sustained serious injuries while on a training ride in Tenerife. Kämna was expected to spend several days in the intensive care unit.
Other riders taken to the hospital Thursday included Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates and Steff Cras of TotalEnergies, which reported its rider was conscious and “transferred to hospital to carry out additional examinations.” EF Education-EasyPost said two of its riders, Alexander Cepeda and Sean Quinn were involved, and Quinn was forced to abandon the race and his “medical evaluation was ongoing.” Others involved in the crash included Quinten Hermans and Natnael Tesfatsion.
The race was neutralized until the finish line, and the restart had to be delayed until doctors could rejoin the race to accompany the remaining riders. Six riders who had been in a breakaway stopped to wait in the next town, and they were allowed to sprint for the stage win but neither their times nor any bonuses would count for the general classification.
Louis Meintjes of Intermarché Wanty wound up winning the stage. Mattias Skjelmose took the overall race lead.
“It’s a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery,” Skjelmose said at the finish. “My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader’s jersey.”
