Dubbing of well-acclaimed, franchise-based Hollywood movies and foreign language ones are in fact a department that works with focus and reverence. 15. Ghostbusters (1984)

Classic in the classiest of ways, ‘Ghostbusters’ delivers on many fronts: comedic, visually stunning, and with a fantastically hilarious cast! About three university professors of parapsychology being turfed from their university and opening their own ghost-hunting business; it would be one of the greatest comedies that you will come across. I saw this when I was a kid and I still watch it to this day. A film that does not get any more fun and great. The talent working on this film is superb; everybody is well-cast, great one-liners. One of those movies you can watch umpteen times and never really get bored of it. You can readily watch the dubbed version if interested.

14. The Godfather Series

Even though heavily recommended to watch the non-dubbed version, listed here because of their unanimous role in the history of cinema and an absolute necessity in watching. Owning a style of their own, some viewers may find it difficult to follow them. Serious dialogues and moments come and go without even us noticing it. Dubbed version avoids this largely. An ultra-stylized modus operandi like no other, all of these (strictly speaking, the first two) gives you chilling, awe-inspiring moments to cherish, making them an unforgettable watch. Nonetheless, the experience will be one of a kind and it is your decision to choose the version you like.

13. Gladiator (2000)

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is a terrific film that took home five Oscars in 2001 including Best Picture. Almost every department done well, it will hook you from beginning to end. Russell Crowe made a powerful lead as Maximus with line delivery so intense that his words go beyond the screen and hit the audience in the face. This is definitely his best performance so far. Joaquin Phoenix makes an enormous impression as well, and his villainous character do powerfully portray that it is actually disturbing. His performance is brutally good. It will be a unique experience in the dubbed version.

12. Jaws (1975)

‘Jaws’ was a revolution in many ways to Hollywood Cinema. One of them was, it perfected the “less is more” terror effect of not seeing the monster until the built up pressure of tension can take no more. Brilliant filmmaking that you do not get to see every day and Spielberg in his top form is always something that is destined to stand the test of time. Not to mention the film has an extremely likable and balanced trio of heroes (quite rare for a thriller film these days), mature respect for the dead, alluring cinematography, impressive practical effects, and one of the most deserving iconic soundtracks of all time. One of the best written scripts of all time, it will be an experience in any language.

11. Django Unchained (2012)

Well, how about a Tarantino film in Hindi! Fun, exciting, amusing, and non-stop exhilarating, ‘Django Unchained’ takes the cake here with another great script by Quentin Tarantino assisted well through marvelous acting and incredulously stylistic directing, it becomes an excellent piece of entertainment from beginning to end. Tarantino makes us face our most grievous sins while making us laugh and leaves us scratching our heads and wondering whether we are in fact the villains. Will be a hell of a watch in Hindi!

10. Avatar (2009)

‘Avatar’ is a beautiful film to watch. Becoming immersed in this world of Pandora is such a real treat. James Cameron’s creativity shines in the landscape of this vast, organic, and intelligent world. For this reason alone, this film is worth the watch. The length and certain plot details make it a harder film to keep returning too. It is such a journey while watching that it seems impossible to watch it more than a handful of times. A script that is predictable and clichéd at times, it will be a fun watch in Hindi if you opt to.

9. American Beauty (1998)

Structurally, ‘American Beauty’ looks and sounds marvelous and flows in perfect cadence with its underlying themes. The picture serves as an example of dark and complex themes structured around a bright visual scheme and lighter performances. It is a film of self-discovery, of redemption, and of understanding the differences between rights, wrong, and inner beauty and outer conformity. Legendary piece of filmmaking from such an underrated director, which will give you lots to think. An essential watch, which you can opt in Hindi if you want.

8. Drive (2011)

‘Drive’ is one of those great films with less talk, but visually and stylistically astounding. That is the main reason why, it cannot lose its essence while viewed in a dubbed version. Hyper-stylized imagery over a substantial script for sure, but what’s lacking dramatically is more than made up for with its blend of striking cinematography, electrifying music and jarring ultra-violence. The terms “art-house” and “action” do not usually mix smoothly in the film world, but Drive mixes them perfectly. It is magnificent, and you probably could not take your eyes off the screen.

7. The Dark Knight (2008)

‘The Dark Knight’ is a film that has cult following in India. The film is available in numerous languages. As you may probably know, it is not a conventional superhero movie. It hardly has any special effects to boast off like any other superhero movie. However, what makes it so compelling and intriguing is its treatment. It is one of the most entertaining movies of action-crime-thriller genre. The Joker is menacing, the Batman is rock solid as he should be and a string of very important and well-etched characters with a terrific plot makes this movie surreal. Moreover, why not, it is Christopher Nolan! Give it a watch!

6. Forrest Gump (1994)

‘Forrest Gump’ is probably everyone’s “good, but overrated” movie. In addition, I think everyone who is saying, he was not touched by this is probably lying. It has a pretentious story somewhat, but the film does not deny that fact. A melodramatic, fairytale telling, possibly would have flopped if it had chosen a different way of storytelling. I know this may seem trite and unfashionable to say so, but this is just a great story and a great movie. The acting and lovable characters tie this movie up into a tight little package that is easy to swallow but conveys a greatness not seen in modern “consumer” cinema. In Hindi too, this movie does work well.

5. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Wes Craven creates an intelligent horror film with the aid of an imaginary premise brought to life by state-of-the-art special effects and a uniformly superb cast. He uses nothing more than the usual conventions to create a film that is scary and creepy throughout. One of those rare occasions where clichés add to the enjoyment. What is most notable on ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ is that Craven and his crew achieved everything without benefit of elaborate gimmickry or computer-driven effects, and next to nothing in the way of showoff camera shots. It is a film about affects, not effects, and that makes all the difference. It is idea- and character-based, and that lets the audience slide right into its world with little trouble. This is also one of those films, available in many languages, and will be a good watch in Hindi.

4. Back to the Future (1985)

Robert Zemeck is directed this hugely entertaining time-travel adventure comedy as Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) accidentally goes back in time 30 years in a time machine invented by his eccentric friend Dr. Emmet Brown(Christopher Lloyd). What follows is incredibly epic, and providing to one more of those films, which is almost impossible to hate. A fine cast, witty and inventive script, and inspired direction make this a most entertaining adventure, very exciting and funny, filled with charm, and good-natured humor about the differences in culture that 30 years can bring. A brilliant movie and a must-watch. It works incredibly well in Hindi too.

3. Jurassic Park (1993)

‘Jurassic Park’ is one that never fails to inspire a sense of awe, and fear. There is a sort of mythical grandeur pervading every frame of this film. Now, of course, the movie has flaws but I would rather not focus on these; ‘Jurassic Park’ is a classic adventure movie in the best Spielberg tradition. The unique camera angles, the suspense to keep you thinking about what is about to happen, everything down to the last line spoken. He created a film that our children’s children will consider classics. A universal blockbuster that is necessary watch is very much engaging in Hindi too.

2. E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

‘E.T.’ is one of those rare films that has the ability to captivate a family audience across all ages. It is one of the most memorable films of all time, showing the bond of friendship between an alien boy who wants to return home and a human boy and his family. It is a film that will make you laugh and cry and a film that will make your heart race with action scenes involving Elliott and a bicycle race to save E.T. and fly over the moon on a bicycle to safety. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best films for all ages that was ever made. The third Spielberg film in this list proves why he is a man of the people. Especially for children, it will be an unforgettable watch in Hindi too.

When a highly contagious virus starts sweeping across the world, the first obvious step towards curbing spread, is to limit the geographical area one has access to. People are no longer just humans, we are all potential carriers who could exacerbate an already worsening global health crisis. And the only way out, is for us to stick to our little nook on the planet and stifle all our "wanderlust" urges for the time being. But what about the massive group of people who had only one escape from the drone of life and its responsibilities, travelling every chance they got? 

Well, it's safe to say travel is going to be off-limits for a long time, and definitely the last area to regain any sense of normalcy. Even if the government allows, our paranoia probably won't. So, what then? No vacation? No, silly. In fact, let's just go to Jaipur right now. Or maybe, the valleys of Kashmir? How about the backwaters of Kerala? Sounds nice, doesn't it? 

All you need is the right Bollywood movie, and you will get an opportunity to teleport to any corner of the country you want, albeit virtually. But think about it this way. Not only is it the safest way to go on a holiday right now, but it will also cost you a grand total of ZERO rupees. And you won't even have to battle crippling anxiety about getting infected every step of the way, because wherever you might be mentally, physically you're still in your bedroom!

1. Highway (2014)

Haryana, Punjab, Spiti Valley, Jammu & Kashmir 

Travel Itinerary 

With our chief guides Veera and Bhati leading the way, we will first hitch a ride along the wide highways of Punjab and Haryana , flanked by blooming mustard fields on both sides. A quick journey through Rajasthan and several miles of picturesque roads later, the snow-clad mountains of Himachal Pradesh will begin to appear on the horizon. Next up on our trip, the stunning town of Kaza in Spiti Valley , and a short pit-stop at Sangla Valley. Finally, we will get to the locales of Aru Valley and Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, where we will pause to rest and reflect.

2. Love Aaj Kal (2009) 

Destination, travel itinerary  .

Starting the road trip with an unusual choice of voyage vehicle, we will all sit atop a yellow taxi with our guides Meera and Jai, and cruise through the expansive roads of Delhi. Soon you will spot the brick-red walls of Laal Qila, followed by a glimpse of Purana Qila to your right. Then, we will proceed to roam the lanes of Dilli Haat , admiring the kaleidoscopic displays of dupattas, bangles and hand-crafted earthen pots, a glassful of Chuski keeping our hands and mouth occupied. The final stop is a Delhi-style Dhaba , where you will be served a desi dinner of paratha and sabzi, and a glass of Thandai to toast to your trip.

3. yeh jawaani hain deewani (2013) .

Manali, Udaipur 

Travel Itinerary

First up on this adventure, we will trek up the hills of Manali , pausing every few minutes to gaze at the white peaks appearing every now and then. There's no need to worry since our travel troop has both seasoned members like Bunny, Aditi and Avi, and first-timers like Naina, so previous experience is absolutely no bar. This will be followed by camping amidst the mountains, and exchanging sips of Lugdi while racing to the top. Then we will have a brief layover for a vibrant Holi celebration , after which we will part ways momentarily. We will meet again in Udaipur , travelling across the ruins of ancient forts , halting to look at life and abandoning all haste. The trip will culminate with a shopping spree of Phulkari dupattas, followed by an evening of dipping our toes in the cold waters of the hotel lake.

4. Dil Chahta Hai  (2001)

This is it folks, this is the Goa trip you've waited for all your life. Joining us on this expedition is the veteran trio of Akash, Samir and Sid , who completed this infamous trip before it was cool. First thing on the agenda is a fun road trip, starting from the bustling streets of Mumbai and leading to a ride along the stunning palm-fringed coastline. After the journey, we will all find ourselves walking on hot sand, soaking up the sun and gorging on Goan cuisine at the gorgeous beaches. We will also roam around the beach towns, engage with the locals , and compare notes on the architectural brilliance of a few churches there. All of this will be topped up by the penultimate experience of tossing our bags aside, and perching on the iconic Fort Chapora wall to stare at the magnificent ocean stretching ahead.

5. chennai express (2013).

Kerala, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu 

Fair heads-up, you might have to put up with a few lame jokes on this trip, but our leading duo Rahul and Meennamma mean well. Now, this is going to be a long train ride, however, the surreal imagery of the cascading Doodhsagar Falls from your window, will be worth the wait. We will also be meandering across the lush-green tea estates of Munnar and travel through the hill towns of Coimbatore. If you'd like, you can find a picturesque spot for yourself and your partner, and given time allows, you may dance atop a hay roof, surrounded by grassy high ground and dense forests in the distance. This adventure will end at the Vattamalai Murugan Temple in Tamil Nadu , and although we'd recommend climbing the stairs yourself, you'd be given the option of asking your partner to carry you, bridal style.

6. jab we met (2007).

Ratlam, Bhatinda, Rohtang, Shimla 

We'd request all of you to first assemble in the sleepy town of Ratlam , so we can together explore the infamous gallis . We will also visit some iconic spots like Hotel Decent , although we'd advise against a long halt. This will be followed by a trip to Bhatinda which we might have to rush through as the next juncture would require us to hitchhike our way to Rohtang , stopping only to sit on fading milestones and watch life drive by. We will make use of various modes of transportation ranging from n ighttime buses to open-top jeeps and bicycle s. Finally, we will arrive at Rohtang Pass and travel to Manali , following which you will be given the option to either go back to your busy city with Aditya, or take up residence at a church in Shimla with Geet.

7. Piku (2015)

Delhi, Kolkata

Since your dad will join us on this road trip, we'd advise you to carry a few extra pillows for him to doze off on. Our trusty Rana Chaudhary's taxi service will be the choice of transportation for the journey, which will begin from the bylanes of Chittaranjan Park in Delhi. We will try our best to calm all quarrels between the travellers, although our stunning night-time pit-stop at Varanasi will be sure to dispel any tension . You can sit on the Ganga bank with our favourite duo Bhashkor and Piku, and together watch the hope-lit lamps drift along with the waters. After this, we will arrive at Kolkata and marvel at its colonial charm , sprawling courtyards, bumble-bee like taxis and painted wooden doors. We will also make a visit to Howrah bridge, where we'd urge you to rest your racing thoughts.

More often than not, I fall in love with the picture-perfect locales and gorgeous destinations shown in the movies more than the storyline or actors. Well, travel movies satiate a traveler in me.

Lately, traveling has become a vital part of our lifestyle. We now understand the importance of investing in experiences over materialistic things. Resultantly, travel has become an important theme for Bollywood filmmakers too.

We already have an ultimate list of the best travel movies of all time . But, this list doesn’t include Bollywood movies. So, I thought of curating a list of the most loved travel movies in Bollywood for all those Bollywood fans.

Best Bollywood Travel Movies of All Time

#1 zindagi na milegi dobara (2011).

This one’s my all-time favorite. I’ve watched it like 10 times or more (actually I’ve lost count). I never get tired of it. It’s that amazing. So we will have to begin our list of Best Indian travel movies with this film.

3 best friends. 1 EPIC road trip. All things awesome!

ZNMD is about three friends who set on a bachelor’s trip to Spain (which they had planned during their college) to overcome their fears. They inspire the viewers to plan a Spanish vacation as they road-tripped from Barcelona to Costa Brava to Seville to Buñol to Pamplona enjoying the famous La Tomatina Festival and taking on adventures like deep-sea diving, skydiving, and a bull run along the way.

I added the ultimate road trip through Spain to my Europe bucket list before even the movie was finished. The movie has all the ingredients to revive the traveler in you. This is one of the inviting Bollywood road trip movies that will want you to pack your bags and head off.

There are a few movies that make you fall in love with your life, and ZNMD is one of those!

#2 Queen (2013)

Queen inspires all the girls out there to drop their fears, take a call, and travel solo at least once in their lifetime. The movie is about a girl who embarks on a solo trip to Paris which was supposed to be her honeymoon trip.

Rani, the main protagonist falls in love with herself while wandering around the gorgeous streets of Paris and Amsterdam . The movie beautifully redefined the concept of solo travel. The journeys we take by ourselves are the journeys we take into ourselves, indeed.

#3 Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

This is the movie that I watched with my best friends and yes we were living the movie while watching it. This for sure remains one of the best travel movies in Bollywood. Any youngster who watches this movie can’t help but crave to take a road trip to Goa with friends. With a beautiful storyline of how three friends discover the beauty of their friendship and life while on a trip to Goa, the movie set a record.

Dil Chahta Hai features quaint beach towns, golden-sand beaches, palm-fringed coastlines, back-country spice farms, quintessential churches and forts, and mouth-watering Goa Cuisine. This movie has contributed a lot to tourism in Goa. The movie also showcases the iconic city of Sydney, Australia .

#4 Swades (2004)

All the NRI (Non-Resident Indians) would be able to relate to the movie Swades which will make them teary-eyed. It is a movie about an NRI played by Shahrukh Khan, who works in NASA and comes to India to discover his roots. He wants to take his nanny to the US along with him.

He takes on the journey on a luxury caravan that he rides and takes through rustic rural India and shows the warmth of people. It showcases the beautiful and vibrant culture of India and the value system that we believe in.

This movie would surely be nostalgic for many living far away from their homeland and remaining in the dilemma of returning back.

#5 Highway (2014)

Imtiaz Ali never fails to charm his viewers. The Highway is a film about a girl who’s kidnapped and put in a truck that travels to Kashmir via Delhi , Punjab , Haryana , Rajasthan , and Himachal Pradesh . The movie beautifully brings out the beauty of freedom through this Bollywood road trip movie.

The snow-clad mountains, crystal-clear rivers, lush green landscape, tiny hamlets of Pahalgam , Aru Valley , Spiti , and the highways of North India – the movie captures the essence of travel in India.

#6 Tamasha (2015)

Another gem from Imtiaz Ali. Tamasha transports you to the beautiful French island of Corsica .

From Turquoise blue waters and stunning bays, to rugged peaks, gorgeous landscapes, medieval charm, and everything in between, the movie captures Corsica in a way that this breathtaking island becomes your bucket list destination.

#7 Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007)

Six honeymooning couples set on an eventful road trip from Mumbai to Goa on a tourist bus and discover secrets about their significant others along the journey that reshapes and redefines their relationship with each other.

#8 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

DDLJ, a directorial debut by Aditya Chopra, made me fall in love with the Swiss Alps and has been a dream destination that I wish to visit with my husband.

The story revolves around the love story of a boy and girl, both NRI living in London who meet on a vacation in Europe with their friends. They both travel on the Eurostar with their friends to exotic locations of Zweissimen , Gstaad , Jungfrau , and Interlaken .

This is one film that even lists 1001 movies that you must watch before you die. Can you believe the movie ran in a theater in Maharashtra for more than 20 years?

So how can this movie not be a part of the Best Bollywood travel movies?

#9 Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)

This movie made me fall in love with cruise trips. Ayesha plans a 10-day cruise sailing through Turkey , Tunisia , Egypt , Spain , Italy , and France to celebrate her parent’s anniversary and the trip connects the dysfunctional family through a series of experiences.

It’s so exciting to see the characters exploring a new country every day! Being on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean can be insanely gorgeous and intensely cathartic. The visuals are inspiring and capture the essence of each country – the vibe and the culture.

#10 Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

The movie charms its viewers with the adorable characters of Naina and Bunny, the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir , and the royal vibe of Rajasthan .

The first half of the movie showcases the characters enjoying hiking the snow-covered Himalayas and the second half takes you through the magnificent forts and palaces of Rajasthan.

It gives some serious destination wedding goals. They can be so much fun. The movie has that feel-good factor. It beautifully motivates people to take time to travel and spend time with friends.

#11 Jab We Met (2007)

This is another movie I never get tired of watching. With an engaging storyline, incredible actors, and a mind-boggling and life-changing journey through various cities and towns ( Ratlam , Kota , Bhatinda , Manali , and Shimla ) in India by different modes like a train, bus, rickshaw, cycle, jeep, and even truck, Jab We Met is a delight for eyes as well as the soul.

I took a trip to Rohtang Pass after seeing the snowy landscapes and a narrow road with snowy walls on either side of Rohtang Pass in Jab We Met. Such road trip movies in Bollywood do inspire you to add them to your bucket list. The two protagonists, Geet and Aditya look so adorable together that you can’t get enough of them.

I realized that trips that don’t have a plan and are spontaneous can be so much fun(risky though but hey life’s all about taking risks). Sometimes, it’s good to have no plan 🙂

#12 Piku (2015)

With a tale of a complicated yet beautiful father-daughter relationship, Piku touches hearts. The movie is set in the capital city of India. The road trip from Delhi to Kolkata en route to the spiritual city of Varanasi is the soul of the movie.

The trip brings out the differences between the lead actors (father and daughter) eventually bonding them by the end of the journey.

The quaint charm of Varanasi and the old-world charm of Kolkata will tickle the traveler in you.

#13 Anjaana Anjaani (2010)

Anjaana Anjaani is an intriguing tale about two heartbroken people who met just when they were about to end their lives and decided to live life to the fullest before ending their lives. Together, they embark on a road trip from New York to Las Vegas .

#14 Road, Movie (2002)

It’s all about a road trip across India’s royal state of Rajasthan . Road, Movie features Rajasthan in its raw form and attracts backpackers and travelers across the world to embark on a soul-stirring journey across Rajasthan.

Road, Movie is a story of a boy Vishnu who journeys across Rajasthan to deliver an antique truck that belongs to his father to a local museum.

#15 Barfi (2012)

This coming-of-age movie is set in West Bengal’s picturesque hill station of Darjeeling . You are sure to be charmed by the heartfelt story and stunning locations as Barfi, the protagonist cycles through Darjeeling’s charming streets featuring rolling tea estates, lush green forests, and mist-covered peaks.

The Clock Tower, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and Glenary’s Cafe are some of the most famous landmarks of Darjeeling featured in the movie. In the second half of the movie, the city of Joy – Kolkata and its colonial charm make your heart flutter.

#16 London Paris New York (2012)

#17 Chalo Dilli (2011)

Chalo Dilli is about two contrasting characters who travel together on a road trip from Mumbai to Delhi to explore the colors and cultures of India’s rural and urban towns.

#18 3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots played a vital role in making Leh Ladakh a popular destination. The climax of the movie features an unusually beautiful Himalayan lake – Pangong Tso that stretches between India and China. The lake instantly became a hot destination after the release of the movie. Otherwise, the offbeat location turned into one of the most touristy places in India. These are the after-effects of the best Indian travel movies.

The local eateries, restaurants, hotels, camps, and lodges mushroomed along the banks of the lake and amusingly most of them are named after the movie or its characters’ names.

Some of the parts of the movie are shot in Druk White Lotus School in Leh which is now also known as ‘Rancho School.’ Rancho is the name of the main protagonist in the movie.

#19 Chennai Express (2013)

This one’s epic as it takes you on an epic journey from Mumbai to Rameshwaram . The characters travel via train and road from Mumbai to Rameshwaram stopping by stunning places along the way.

Featured in the movie are – the utterly beautiful Dudhsagar Falls in Goa , the rolling tea gardens of Munnar in Kerala , the little town of Pollachi in Coimbatore , Vattamalai Murugan Temple in Tamil Nadu , and the iconic Pamban Bridge (the first sea bridge in India that connects Rameshwaram on Pamban Island to mainland India).

#20 Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017)

It’s the story of a girl who loses her engagement ring on a trip, takes the help of a tour guide to search for the ring, and eventually falls for him.

The movie takes you through multiple locations in Europe – Budapest , Vienna , Amsterdam , Lisbon , Prague , and Frankfurt . You get to experience the culture of Punjab in India at the end of the film as the last few scenes are shot in the ancient town of Noor Mahal, Punjab .

#21 Hum Tum (2004)

In a light-hearted movie, Hum Tum travels to the amazing destinations of Delhi , Amsterdam , USA , Paris , and Mumbai as the two main characters, Karan and Rhea (unknowingly and unwantedly) bump into each other at different intervals in their lives.

I have been dying to visit Amsterdam since the time I watched Hum Tum. Doesn’t this happen to you when you watch Bollywood movies on travel?

#22 Jagga Jasoos (2017)

The film is about a curious boy who embarks on an expedition to search for his lost father and meets the love of his life along the journey.

The movie starts in a beautiful hill station in West Bengal, Darjeeling , and later on, lets you explore some of the most unexplored parts of South Africa and Morocco .

#23 Rang De Basanti (2006)

The movie is based on a rebellious concept that tastefully blends the elements of history, patriotism, sacrifice, and politics. It’s primarily set in Delhi but also features the famous attractions in Jaipur and Punjab .

Remember that song ‘Masti Ki Pathshala’ from the movie? It was shot at the baoli in Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur . The beautiful mustard fields of Punjab make your heart crave to run through those fields of yellow mustard flowers. The famous Golden Temple of Amritsar , the Hola Mohalla Festival of Anandpur Sahib, and the famed Durga Sarai Fort of Ludhiana make RDB a must-watch for the right dose of wanderlust.

#24 PK (2014)

Apart from the unusual tale of an alien stuck on the earth, what caught my attention was the picture book city of Bruges in Belgium which served as a perfect setting for the love story in the first half of the movie.

The gorgeous canals, charming cobbled streets, and medieval buildings made me fall in love with Bruges . Did you know PK is the first Bollywood movie shot in Bruges?

The movie also takes you through some of the most intriguing sites in Delhi like Agrasen ki Baoli , Chandni Chowk , Connaught Place , and the colorful countryside town of Rajasthan , Mandwa . You’ll get a taste of the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

#25 Fanaa (2006)

I loved Fanaa. It features the stunning heritage sites in Delhi and the other-worldly beauty of Kashmir . The movie beautifully captures the best of both destinations.

In the first half of the movie, you’ll see the main protagonists exploring the architectural wonders in Delhi – Red Fort, Qutub Minar , Humayun’s Tomb , India Gate , and Purana Qila .

The second half of the movie features the snow-clad Himalayas, chinar trees, and quaint wooden houses in Kashmir .

#26 Kaal (2005)

Kaal is a thriller movie that’s shot in one of the most famous national parks in India or rather the world – Jim Corbett National Park . You explore the exotic wildlife and forests in India from the comfort of your couch as the mystery unfolds.

#27 Love Aaj Kal (2009)

A pinch of romance, a dash of comedy, a sprinkle of drama, and a lot of places – Love Aaj Kal gracefully portrays the complications of long-distance relationships.

The story takes you on a jaunt through London , Delhi , Kolkata , Punjab , and San Francisco . With beautiful visuals from the quaint villages of Punjab , narrow streets of Old Delhi , colorful locales of London , the oldest neighborhoods of Kolkata , and a sight of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco , Love Aaj Kal pushes you to leave the comforts of home and explore the world.

Its sequel, Love Aaj Kal 2 perfectly showcases the beauty of the untouched and quaint village of Chitkul in Himachal Pradesh at the Indo-Tibetan border aka The Last Village of India .

This is what I love about Imitiaz Ali. His every movie takes you to bucket-list-worthy destinations with his characters and casts a spell of travel on its audience. His movies Breathe, Dream, and Live Travel.

#28 Lootera (2013)

Lootera is a story set in the ’50s. The daughter of an aristocrat falls in love with a visiting archeologist from West Bengal without knowing a secret his life holds. It’s shot in quaint and laid-back locations in India – Khajjiar , Dalhousie , and Manikpur, West Bengal .

The snow-clad mountains, colorful wooden houses, lush meadows, striking deodar forests, and pretty lakes – Khajjiar pulls you as you appreciate the beauty it holds with every scene.

#29 Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

The movie is an absolute treat with some of the world’s most amazing destinations it’s shot in – Istanbul , Mardin , Havana , Bangkok , Phuket , Delhi , and Dublin .

Ek Tha Tiger is a story of a RAW agent, Tiger who travels to Dublin to keep an eye on an Indian scientist suspected of leaking nuclear secrets with ISI where he meets the love of his life, Zoya, a spy from Pakistan.

A traveler in you will also love its sequel, Tiger Zinda Hai which features beautiful locations across five different countries – Abu Dhabi , Austria , Greece , Morocco , and India .

With exotic destinations charming viewers, Bollywood movies about travel are rising.

#30 English Vinglish (2012)

One of the last movies of my all-time favorite actress, Sridevi – English Vinglish is a heartfelt story of a woman named Shashi who’s made to feel insecure and inferior just because she doesn’t speak English by her husband and daughter.

The film touches your soul as Shashi sets on a transformational solo journey to the Big Apple (NYC) to attend the wedding of her sister’s daughter. You can enjoy iconic sights and attractions in New York from Central Park, and Times Square to Brooklyn Bridge, and Fifth Avenue. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, New York City makes her feel as if she belongs here.

The song Manhattan is so powerful that you end up planning a trip to New York before even the movie ends.

Bollywood films set around a road trip can have deep undertones and get highly philosophical too. And the latest one to join the list is Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan and Mithila Palkar starrer Karwaan.

Karwaan has been directed by Akarsh Khurana. It revolves around Avinash who receives the wrong dead body of his father and goes on a road trip to find out what happened. On his journey, he meets new people and faces situations that change his life. But before Karwaan arrives on August 3, here is a list of films which had a road trip at the center of its plot.

1. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

The film which explored the stretches of Spain was much more than its bylanes, the Tomatina festival and deep-sea-diving. The audience could relate with either of its lead characters – Arjun, Kabir and Imran. The Zoya Akhtar directorial forced the audience to question the materialistic futility of the world, and live life like it was the only gift you had.

A father-daughter duo hit the road from Delhi to Kolkata , only to deepen their bond. As they cross different states and cities like Varanasi, its beauty begins to reflect on them as well. The film starring Amitabh Bachchan , Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan was a slice of life showing a dysfunctional family like never before.

Because cancelling the bookings would’ve been a costly affair, Rani decides to take a solo honeymoon trip to Paris and Amsterdam after her marriage is called off. An under-confident and naive girl, who has barely done things outside her marked territory, finds a new lease of life only to return home as a free-spirited woman.

It took Ranbir Kapoor’s Ved a trip to Corsica and a travel companion like Tara to find his actual calling. Imtiaz Ali beautifully shot the film chasing the Mediterranian country’s history and culture, until our lead characters understood their dreams and meaning of life. Tamasha taught us the difference between existing and living.

5. Dil Chahta Hai

Three childhood friends have nothing to complain until they hit the road to Goa , and later when the film travels to Sydney. Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut is still considered relevant as it explored human relationships and how the transition period in the lives of the three friends changes their bond.

6. Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd.

Six couples, with their individual backstories, troubles and baggage, meet on a honeymoon trip. Each one undergoes their trial and tribulations on the four-day journey of Goa. It catered to every kind of couple and how all they needed was some time off the life they otherwise lead in their homes, to rediscover that lost spark.

7. Finding Fanny

As the name suggests, the film is a journey to find Stefanie ‘Fanny’ Fernandes. An unlikely bunch including a wooly romantic, a lusty painter, a middle-aged matron, a lithe maiden and a sulky young fellow embark on the journey in the interiors of Goa, giving us some great moments. It showed Goa like no other film till date, with several unexplored virgin locations coming to light.

Alia Bhatt ’s character finds freedom in captivity. Despite her kidnappers keeping her under bondage, her mind and heart travels along with the truck from inhaling the salty air of Rajasthan to the cool moist air of Kashmir. From the Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh to the Aru Valley and Chandanwari near Pahalgam, travelling through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab, the film was a beautiful canvas seen from the camera of Anil Mehta.

9. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone take a hiking trip to Manali, while fighting their individual demons. The trip through the snow-clad mountains and scenic plains not just renews their friendship, but also lead to their self-discovery. While Ranbir’s Kabir teaches Deepika aka Naina ‘raftaar’ in life, his own soul-searching journey finds a support base in her.

10. Jab We Met

Nothing beats a road trip film in Bollywood like this one. Two strangers meet on a train and after initial inhibitions and turn of events spend the next few days hitting the road only to end up altering each other’s lives. As a happy-go-lucky Geet, it was Kareena Kapoor’s career best, and Shahid Kapoor’s career-defining film too. From ‘Ratlaam ki galiyaan’ to the ‘khet of Bhatinda’, this one remains one of Bollywood’s best entertainers.

To travel is to live. Travelling is almost like a therapeutic exercise which heals us with the beauty and experiences of the unexplored world. We meet different people, interact with different cultures and the memories we carry back are just priceless. 

Films act as a getaway from the tough realities of life. Those three hours spent in a dark theatre open your window to fantasies. And when those films have beautiful, picturesque locations, you just want to pack your bags and travel. After all, it isn’t always bad thing to get inspired by movies, eh?

Here’s a list of Bollywood films that will make you want to leave everything else and just travel:

1. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

The film took us through a road trip in Spain. The lazy road travel, the breathtaking deep-sea-diving, the super-fun  Tomatina festival, and the liberating sky-fall were all just to die for. It makes you want to travel with your friends and discover your own self. In fact, this film has made Spain a popular travel destination for Indians.

2. Queen (2013)

This film takes the protagonist and our imagination to Paris and Amsterdam. She discovers her own identity and learns that you don’t necessarily need a partner to have fun in your life. She doesn’t let her honeymoon tickets go waste and decides to take the trip solo and this experience changes her life forever. She gains a new perspective about living life on her own terms. 

3. Tamasha (2015)

Tamasha brought to life the beautiful city of Corsica for us Indians. The film showed the place so beautifully that each frame looked like a picture post card. It looked like a perfect getaway for the characters and felt like it would be perfect for us as well. The local flavour was just enough to make Corsica your dream destination, a place where nobody would know you and you won’t know anybody either.

4. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

This film has set travel goals for a whole generation. While the movie is remembered for a whole lot of other things, the idea of friends travelling to just chill on the beaches of Goa is stuff vacation goals are made of! Such was the influence of the movie, Goa became the national holiday spot for the young generation and still remains so.

5. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

This is where the travel craze started. Raj and Simran meet on a Euro trip, fall in love and after a short trip to the mustard fields of Punjab, live happily ever after. The landscapes of Europe are lavish, and the film captures that beautifully. Even the second half of the film, which is shot in Punjab, has inspired a generation to get a picture clicked in the mustard fields.

6. Finding Fanny (2014)

Finding Fanny showed Goa like no other film. There were no rave parties in this one, instead it showed lesser known outskirts of the state. The virgin locations in the film became popular overnight. If you’re planning a peaceful trip to the state, this film will totally inspire you.

7. Highway (2014)

This film was a journey that you didn’t want to end. The theatre felt like a window seat of a vehicle and you just didn’t want the vehicle to stop. A bride-to-be is kidnapped by a local goon who takes her through roads she has never seen before. It captures the remote Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh and drives over to the Aru Valley and Chandanwari near Pahalgam. And it’s not just the scenic beauty of the mountains, the essence of the film is travel and is beautifully conveyed even in the plains of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab.

8. Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)

This film was shot on a cruise ship which traveled through Turkey, Spain and Tunisia. The sequences on the cruise ship had beautiful ocean in the background and stunningly dressed people in the foreground. And you’re still looking for reasons to set off for a vacation?

9. Chennai Express (2013)

Chennai Express might be known for several other (not-so-flattering) reasons but the film was surely a visual treat. From the majestic Dudhsagar Falls in Goa to the lush hill town of Munnar in Kerala, each frame of the movie was a sight to behold in this film. The landscape shown in the film will surely make you want to be there in person.

10. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Bordered by dense forests and sparkling in their white glory, Gulmarg’s snow-clad peaks are just breathtaking. Even though Gulmarg was passed off as Manali in the film, the film inspired bag-packers to leave everything aside and go on a trek with friends in this region. The film’s second half captures the beautiful palaces and monuments of Rajasthan. The theme wedding in Udaipur showed that Rajasthan is so much more than just deserts.

11. Jab We Met (2007)

The film starts off with a train journey from Mumbai and makes some interesting stops at Ratlam, Kota, Bhatinda, Manali and Simla. Each city acts as a stop-over for the characters and the story of the film. This film surely made train journeys look really cool!

12. Chalo Dilli (2011)

Two characters from drastically different backgrounds have to travel together by road and train. The destination is Delhi and the road trip makes them both see what they’ve been missing in their lives. The highways they take and the people they meet is what traveling is all about – having new experiences.

13. Piku (2015)

A father-daughter duo travels with a taxi company owner from Delhi to Kolkata in this road trip movie. The highways they travel make us want to be on a road trip ASAP. We watch them stopping over in Varanasi which looks beautiful at night and when they finally reach Kolkata, the city’s landscape is instantly likeable. 

14. London Paris New York (2012)

This film is the journey of two characters through these three cities. They first meet in London while waiting to catch the next flight. They meet again in Paris and then finally get united in New York. These three cities are probably on the bucket list of all of us and the film just captures that fantasy to perfection.

15. Anjaana Anjaani (2010)

The protagonists decide to end their lives but before that they must travel a little. Travelling is just the best way to live and what better place to go and explore Las Vegas. The road trip they take from New York to Las Vegas is just stunning to look at. And the barren lands too look breathtaking.

16. Raanjhanaa (2013)

The holy city of Varanasi showed in this film felt so pure in its spirit. The religious divide, the local culture and colour of the city was beautifully captured in the first half of the film. Even the dialect used in the film was true to the city. Banares was not just a location for this film, the city was featured like a character.

17. Road, Movie (2010)

Vishnu (Abhay Deol) is on a journey across the scenic state of Rajasthan to deliver his father’s antique, colourful truck to a local museum. The journey proves transformative for every traveler, but especially for Vishnu who discovers life, love and laughter on the Indian highway. This film introduces you to a different Rajasthan. It is rustic, rural & yet enigmatic.

18. Lootera (2013)

Lootera was a tale set in the ’50s and made us appreciate the beauty of Manikpur, a small town in West Bengal. The second half of the film showcased the alluring snow clad mountains of Dalhousie. If a laid back vacation is your thing, Lootera is just the inspiration you need.

When one of the three musketeers is going to get married, the three go on a bachelor trip to Spain and fulfill their pact. 

What makes this tale gripping is that the bachelor trip and the pact lend themselves to the film’s core themes – friendship, forgiveness, living in the now, facing your fears, contentment, and more. The narrative makes the film wholesome and profound. Another intriguing aspect of the film is how Spain is showcased in the film. The long winding roads alongside meadows, the archaic buildings, and even the local culture are depicted with utmost authenticity. So, this one is a must-watch for everyone who loves movies and travel!

2. Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017)

Theme: Screwball Comedy | Wholesome | Strangers on a Train

There’s more to life even after a tragic event. Well, it’s precisely what Jaya and Yogi learn when they meet each other on a dating app and set out on a trip around the country. But it’s not just any other trip. Yogi takes Jaya to meet his three ex-girlfriends and somehow Jaya seems on board with the plan. 

Very few films depict India in the most aesthetic yet authentic manner. The backdrop of  Dehradun, Jaipur, and Gangtok are stunning and lend themselves to the duos’ whimsical adventure. The mishaps they face, portray how different their personalities are but also give the audience an insight into the emotional baggage they carry. The different frames hold your attention and the two characters bring them to life. How the rollercoaster ride across states and cities unfolds makes up for a feel-good experience.

3. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Theme: Friendship | Melodrama | Coming-of-Age

Ask any millennial boy the most relatable travel movie they have watched and it would for sure be Dil Chahta Hai. The film was a contemporary depiction of what friendships mean and how life gets in the way. In fact, the film was one of the biggest reasons why an all-boys Goa trip became a fantasy of every millennial guy. 

In many ways, one can consider Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara an evolution of Dil Chahta Hai. The film showcases how as life goes on, the closest friends tend to become distant because life takes them on different paths. How their bond evolves becomes the central theme of the tale. What’s truly beautiful is how the significance of the Goa trip changes for them. At the film’s beginning, it is merely an all-boys trip but towards the end it becomes like a thread that connects them.

4. Piku (2015)

Theme: Road Trip | Familial Relationships

Can Bollywood movies ever be grounded in reality? Well, this road trip movie is an answer to that. Starring Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Irrfan Khan, the film is a funny blend of constipation and a road trip. Imagine driving from Delhi to Kolkata with a potty chair tied to the top and stopping several times because an old man ‘thinks’ he has to take a dump. 

Piku is as funny as it is profound. They say that road trips are perfect to understand the dynamics of any group. In Piku we see the father-daughter relationship between the titular character and her old constipated father. We see the emotional baggage each of them carries, the generational patterns that exist between them, and how they come to understand each other. The journey from Delhi to Kolkata almost symbolizes the evolution of the father-daughter bond.

5. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Theme: Friendship | Relationships | Coming-of-Age

Yet another film that stirred the wanderlust in all our hearts. The film is the perfect package of classic elements such as travel, friendships, life, and more. Although we have seen these in multiple films, the movie finds a way to touch your heart. You connect with the character who wants to travel the world, but also with the character who wants to stay grounded and settle in one place. 

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a romantic comedy that portrays relationships in the most soulful way. It depicts how traveling together can make better bonds; how some trips can transform strangers into best friends. The film also showcases that traveling can be an escape from reality and other burdens. In the end, it leaves you with a simple thought. You can keep traveling, exploring, and wandering solo all your life. But none of it would matter if you don’t have anyone to share the happiness or celebrate the triumphs with.

6. Queen (2013)

Theme: Solo Travel | Coming-of-Age

Queen is the perfect mainstream Bollywood movie about travel. It’s got the songs, the dance, the profound message, and a wholesome vibe. The story follows Rani Mehra who goes on her honeymoon trip solo because her to-be husband gets called off the wedding. The title is a play on the leading lady. Rani means Queen in Hindi. 

When Rani sets off on this adventure she is sad, shy, and unaware of the world that exists beyond her middle-class Delhi upbringing. However, as she meets new people, and goes through different experiences, she realizes that there’s more to life. She remembers how her fiance behaved with her and realizes the intricacies of her relationship with him. The film explores locations such as Amsterdam and Paris yet the portrayal isn’t larger than life. 

In fact, the grounded treatment of the locations makes it more relatable and makes the audience feel that these dream destinations do not need to be dreams. It’s films like these that inspire us the most because they bring together realism and utopia in a perfect way.

7. Jab We Met (2007)

Theme: Romantic Comedy | Coming-of-Age | Strangers on a Train

Let’s be honest, the theme of two strangers meeting on a train has been done quite a few times. But Jab We Met, directed by Imtiaz Ali, is still one of our favorites in the genre. The story is about Aditya and Geet who bump into each other in a train while the latter goes to her hometown, Bhatinda. Aditya is a troubled businessman who just saw his ex-girlfriend at her wedding reception and is almost done with life. In comes Geet who transforms his life in the most silly, annoying, yet profound way. 

The film’s beauty is that it is realistic yet a little romantic. For once the trains and the train stations don’t seem fancy and the different locations such as Punjab and Rajasthan are presented in an authentic way. The director, Imtiaz Ali does have a way of exploring destinations and showcasing them through a lens we have never seen before.

8. Highway (2014)

Theme: Drama | Kidnapping | Freedom

Highway is an offbeat tale in this list. The story is about a girl who gets kidnapped but only while she’s held captive does she understand the meaning of freedom. Veera is engaged with a person whom she doesn’t love and gets kidnapped by a group of captors led by Mahabir. Mahabir keeps shifting Veera in his truck across various cities to avoid being caught. However, during this time, a realization dawns upon Veera and changes her life. 

Can anyone find beauty in something dark and murky? Highway shows that the answer is 100% yes. Through the long winding roads, both the audience and Veera realize how freeing life can be if only one learns to make peace with past incidents and emotional baggage. The film is subtle in its tiny moments, yet impactful as a whole.

9. Tamaasha (2015)

Theme: Coming-of-Age | Following Passion

This is the third Imtiaz Ali directorial in this list and you can’t blame us. There’s something enigmatic yet mesmerizing about his portrayal of locations. Almost every time we watch one of Imtiaz Ali’s movies we learn about new spots, locations, or destinations. Tamaasha is no different. 

The tale is about a man who lives one kind of life but wants to live another kind. It portrays how traveling is the only outlet for the protagonist, Ved. However, when Tara enters his life, his life turns upside down because of the simple insight – your life can be lived however you want. Tamaasha showcases the power of travel and storytelling. It depicts how escapism works when people yearn to travel but also emphasizes that one must ‘experience’ things while traveling. After all, life is too short to just escape.

10. Jagga Jasoos (2017)

Theme: Adventure | Coming-of-Age 

Ranbir Kapoor has somehow managed to become part of films that are coming of age, about finding something or someone. In Jagga Jasoos, Ranbir’s character, Jagga goes on a quest to find his missing father.

Now, many people didn’t enjoy this film due to the bad visual effects and underwhelming narrative. But what we couldn’t deny was the way different locations such as Morocco, Kolkata, and South Africa. The different frames in the movie can be used as laptop and phone wallpapers. In fact, the overall cinematography is pretty solid and makes you want to visit the places in person. If the film achieves that, then there’s nothing like it.

What is going on in 2020? I had made so many travel plans for this year. But now, I find myself stuck at home with restrictions on travel making me dump all my plans. Since I cannot go outside freely, I have been watching movies, especially travel movies to keep myself hooked to the plans. Maybe, I can keep up with them once this pandemic comes to a standstill.

Well, who isn’t a fan of Hollywood travel movies like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty , Into the Wild and The Motorcycle Diaries ? There are quite a few that will multiply your love for travel. For people in India, good news is that more and more movies based on travel are being made lately and I feel Hindi movies connect with us better.

So, I thought I’ll share few of the best Bollywood movies based on travel that I absolutely adored watching. Few of these have been my all time favourites, mainly because of my love for travel. I am pretty sure that these movies will inspire you to make more travel plans.

Moreover, I happen to be a filmmaking enthusiast, so when I do watch movies, I look at them from a filmmaker's perspective, mainly aspects like storytelling and cinematography. That’s why you’ll see me praising these movies on similar points as you read on. Don’t worry, I’ll try my best to not give out any spoilers.

First of all, let me tell you I have no count of the number of times I have watched this movie. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , also known as ZNMD in short is a must watch for all you travel buffs. The story revolves around a road trip plan of three close friends.

Childhood friends Kabir , Imraan and Arjun played respectively by Abhay Deol , Farhan Akhtar and Hritik Roshan , make a plan to visit Spain in their younger days, but life happens. With everyone dealing with their own things, the plan never happened until it turns into Arjun’s bachelor trip.

3 close friends. A beautiful foreign country. Lots of fun. Innumerable memories. Yes, this movie is all of that.

The movie’s director, Zoya Akhtar takes you on a compelling visual journey that features the ravishing city of Barcelona , scuba and skydiving in Costa Brava , the famous La Tomatina festival in Bunol and Bull racing in Pamplona .

The movie is well complemented with its songs. Khaabon Ke Parinday is my personal favourite, with the visuals of the song being so pleasing to the eye. The shot of horses running along during the road trip excites me every time I watch the music video.

As the movie progresses, it picks up the theme of discovering one’s self and overcoming one’s fears, which is what travel is really about. At the end of the movie, you’ll find yourselves craving for a Spanish holiday with your best friends.

2. Tamasha (2015)

IMDB Rating : 7.3/10

Imtiaz Ali , the director of this complex, yet beautiful film is probably a travel fanatic himself. I’ll tell you why I am making this assumption. Almost all his films have the characters going on some sort of trip.

The movie sets off with the meeting of the leading characters - Ved , played by Ranbir Kapoor and Tara , played by Deepika Padukone . Two very distinct characters, yet make a charming couple.

The first half of the movie features Corsica , a French Island which I never heard of before watching the film. Corsica has got quite popular with this movie being made. The stunning island features blue waters, captivating landscapes of bays and craggy peaks. “What happens in Corsica, stays in Corsica!” is what the lead characters go by as they make a pact of not telling their actual names and not falling for each other and instead decide to make fun memories during their time at the island. But, that doesn’t go as planned.

The male lead’s character, Ved is quite complex which adds to the beauty of the movie. He takes you on his own journey of fighting the cage of emotions and hardships that we all might connect on a personal level.

Another reason why I absolutely love this movie is because of its unique storytelling. Imtiaz Ali adopts a non linear screenplay, which is quite rare in Bollywood movies.

The second half of the movie also features scenes from India, Hauz Khas Village in Delhi and few shots from Shimla .

The music album is composed by AR Rahman , with Agar Tum Saath Ho being the standout pick of music lovers. The song makes you feel a lot of emotions at once, I personally never get tired of listening to it. Rest of the songs in the album are truly underrated, you’ll know as you watch this exciting movie.

3. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

IMDB : 8.1/10

A movie that was made in the starting of this century, Dil Chahta Hai made quite a revolution in two fields - Indian Cinema and India’s travel scene. Another movie about 3 friends going on a road trip, but this time to the party capital of India - Goa . Apparently Goa started getting huge amounts of tourist traffic after this movie was released, such was its impact!

Aamir Khan , Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna play the leading male roles while Preity Zinta plays the female lead role. The 3 friends discover the beauty of their friendship as they travel across various beach towns that showcases golden sand beaches, tropical coastlines, ancient forts and churches, delicious Goan cuisine. Moreover, Chapora Fort which features in the movie, is now popularly known as the ‘ Dil Chahta Hai fort ’. This rustic charm of Goa in the movie certainly proves the statement - Goa is not just a party destination.

In the later half, the movie carries the viewers to Sydney , Australia with glimpses into the Sydney Opera house . I’m pretty sure we all know about the Sydney Opera House but quite a few saw videos of the opera performance. You’ll witness that in the movie, very fascinating indeed.

The Dil Chahta Hai cast is what makes the film more special, with all the leads doing a phenomenal job in the portrayal of 3 different personalities.

The director of the film, Farhan Akhtar certainly set a benchmark in Hindi cinema during a time when movies on topics like travel were barely made. The movie has been a big inspiration to the younger generations to plan a trip to Goa . Let’s admit it, we all have made plans to go to Goa with friends, but only a few manage to make this plan happen successfully.

4. Karwaan (2018)

IMDB Rating : 7.5/10

Another road trip movie, but quite different in terms of context and storyline. Avinash , played by Dulquer Salman (his debut Hindi movie) is stuck in a boring and unfulfilling 9-5 job. Suddenly strikes the news of his father’s death in a road accident. With this new already causing a stir in his mind, Avinash has more in his plate of bad luck as he discovers that his dad’s body has been replaced by another body of an old lady.

To sort out the misunderstanding and return this old lady’s body, Avinash along with his friend Shaukat , played by late Irrfan Khan take a road trip to Kochi from Bangalore . Enroute Kochi , they make a pitstop to pick up the old lady’s granddaughter, played by Mithila Palkar . You all know Mithila Palkar right? She grew to fame after playing the female lead in the well loved Indian web series - Little Things .

The movie has a light hearted story complimented well with aesthetic lush green frames. The story turns into a journey of self discovery, 3 very different personalities of the leads come together to understand each other and connect on common grounds.

This is one of the very few travel movies that is shot in South India , featuring places like Ooty , Coimbatore , Thrissur and Kochi . After all, South India is no less than North India when it comes to touristy places.

The storyline of the film has unexpected turns and hurdles, which is what life is all about. Sometimes you end up in situations with any plans and you just have to glide past these moments and come out with beautiful memories. Though the movie has a story that leans a bit towards a serious note, Irrfan Khan’s character - Shaukat , brings in the right amount of humour to make the storytelling even more captivating.

Songs from the movie is something that needs to be talked about. The music is very soothing. New age sensation, Prateek Kuhad also makes his Bollywood debut with 2 songs in his name - Kadam and Saansein . Overall, its one of those rare movies that really hits the right notes in your mind, while most of the scenes warms up your heart!

5. Queen (2013)

IMDB Rating : 8.2/10

Queen , directed by Vikas Bahl is a movie that broke a few stereotypes in the country. Rani , played by Kangana Ranaut is from a conservative family and is ditched by her husband soon after their wedding. So, she decides to go on their honeymoon alone.

She goes on an exciting trip to Europe , mainly cities like Paris and Amsterdam . Rani finds herself alone and confused in this whole new world to her. In Paris, she meets Vijayalakshmi , an Indo-French girl played by Lisa Haydon who teaches her about love, lust and life. Later, Rani finds herself travelling to Amsterdam where she shares a hostel room with three other men who become good friends with her and they start hanging out as a group.

Kangana is the star performer of the movie as she takes us all on a journey of discovering one’s own identity and making a strong statement - “ You don’t necessarily need a partner to travel. ” It’s quite the film that will inspire us, especially girls to take up solo travelling. The music album by Amit Trivedi and Rupesh Kumar Ram has some decent songs. I really appreciate the work Vikas Bahl has put into, his first standalone movie as a director. The movie has a lot of exciting scenes and overall its a feel good movie that you shouldn’t miss.

6. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

IMDB Rating : 7.1/10

In short know as YJHD , this movie sets off with a group of friends going on a backpacking trip to Manali . This is where the movie’s leads Naina and Kabir (aka Bunny in the movie) meet, played respectively by Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor . Bunny is accompanied by 2 friends, Aditi played by Kalki Koechlin and Avi played by Aditya Roy Kapur . In the starting half, the movie features the trekking adventures along the snowy peaks at Gulmarg, Kashmir , which in the movie is shown as Manali . With the beautiful visuals of the Himalayas , the movie is shot quite well adding value to the interesting script. During this trip, Naina discovers that she has fallen for Bunny but refrains from letting him know about it.

You will absolutely love Bunny in this film. His passion for travel and exploring the world is made clear with his job as a travel journalist. The movie later transports you to scenes from Europe , mainly Paris as you see Bunny’s exciting work life. The song Ilahi from the movie is all about Bunny enjoying the time of his life while doing what he loves, something that we all crave for.

Fast forward a bit and we are back in India , this time living the royal vibe of Rajasthan . The friends re-unite at Aditi’s royal wedding in the beautiful city of Udaipur . Here, you get glimpses of the Oberoi Udaivilas , one of the most stunning hotels in India. Most of you will definitely crave for a big fat Indian wedding in this stunning location as you watch the movie.

The Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani cast is what makes the movie exciting. Ranbir and Deepika’s chemistry on screen is phenomenal while Kalki and Aditya Roy Kapur do enough justice to their supporting characters. On screen, Bunny, Aditi and Avi are major friendship goals. I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing this movie in place of these actors.

The story is quite fresh with the visuals well complementing the script. The director of the movie, Ayan Mukherji has done a good job in making this movie something that people will keep watching and love it every single time. The music album is pretty good with songs for every occasion. Moreover, all the songs have been a major hit. The movie has a lot to offer, as the movie progresses you’ll find yourself wanting to catch up with your long lost school buddies and planning a trip with them.

7. Jab we met (2007)

IMDB Rating : 7.9/10

Last in the list is this movie I have watched numerous times and in fact it is my favourite rom-com from Bollywood. The movie starts off with a train journey where the lead characters meet in quite a unique way. Aditya , played by Shahid Kapoor is quite depressed with his dad’s death and his breakup. Geet , played by Kareena Kapoor , meets him on her train journey back to her hometown as she finds him sitting on her seat. What follows next is a rollercoaster of a ride, that makes up the later part of the movie.

The story takes a journey through various towns of Ratlam, Kota, Bhatinda, Manali and involves all sorts of mode of transportation like train, bus, rickshaw, jeep, cycle and even a truck. In the later half of the movie, it features the snowy landscapes and narrow roads of Rohtang Pass . It also features the popular Naggar Castle in one of the songs. Most of the movie was shot in North India and each city acts as a step over for both the lead characters.

Geet is one of the most loved characters in Hindi cinema. With her bubbly attitude and a mouth that never stops talking, she adds warmth to Aditya’s life who is depressed in the first half of the movie and soon starts opening up to her. Shahid and Kareena who happened to be a couple back then, gave the movie one of the best seen on screen chemistry, which makes you love the movie with all your heart.

Sometimes the trips that are spontaneous, without any sort of plan, happen to be the best trips. The movie is about this - how a single trip can be life changing with a lot of good memories to take from. It will certainly inspire you to sometimes letting go off the planning mentality and going with the flow.

Ever since Farhan Akhtar announced his next directorial project Jee Le Zaraa , a road trip movie starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Katrina Kaif, and Alia Bhatt, we have been streaming travel movies to live vicariously through the characters and their journeys. Although not technically a road trip film, a large part of the movie does pan out during a Delhi-Kolkata trip. Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone play the roles of a father-daughter duo who are at once bickering as well as swapping fun stories. The late Irrfan Khan essayed the character of their flummoxed driver who pays witness to this dysfunctional relationship.

4. ‘Finding Fanny’

A group of five oddball characters set out on their journey to look for the elusive Fanny who was Ferdie’s (Naseeruddin Shah) love interest. As they try to travel with and tolerate each other, they also develop a camaraderie that helps them become more self-aware of themselves and their relationships. Kristen Stewart, Michael Cera shot new movie ‘Sacramento’ in the capital city. What to know

Hollywood star Michael Cera is taking a road trip to “Sacramento.”

The capital city gets a starring role in the movie “Sacramento,” which will make its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in New York City in June, according to the prominent film festival’s website.

Described as a buddy comedy, “Sacramento” follows two former best friends — free-spirited Ricky and father-to-be Glenn — who embark on a spontaneous road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento.

The movie is directed and co-written by Michael Angarano, who stars in the feature film along with Cera, Kristen Stewart and Maya Erskine.

At Tribeca, “Sacramento” will compete in the U.S. Narrative Competition, screening alongside Delaney Buffett’s “Adult Best Friends,” Vera Brunner-Sung’s “Bitterroot” and Morrisa Maltz’s “Jazzy.”

Indiewire reported that the movie is currently seeking distribution .

Where did new movie ‘Sacramento’ film in city?

“Sacramento” fittingly features scenes shot and around in the capital city .

According to a city news release in May 2023, crews filmed in Old Sacramento, Gunther’s Ice Cream , East Sacramento, R Street Corridor and the downtown area.

“I’m thrilled that Michael Angarano chose to film part of his film in Sacramento,” Sacramento Film Commissioner Jennifer West said in the release. “With a wonderful cast and script, this movie is sure to bring Sacramento attention the likes of ‘Lady Bird.’ Independent films like this can have a large impact on the local community and tourism.”

West said the movie brought $100,000 to the region in terms of hotels, local hires, van rentals and catering.

“Sacramento” isn’t the only new movie to highlight the Sacramento area.

In February, crews spent time in downtown Sacramento filming a new movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor.

The movie, which is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, does not have an official name, yet. It’s tentatively called “BC Project.”

The film is set to open in theaters on Aug. 8, 2025.
