In 2016, BLACKPINK took its first steps toward K-pop greatness. Thanks to YG Entertainment, members Kim Jisoo, Jennie Kim, Roseanne Park, and Lalisa Manobal joined together to create what would become one of the most popular girl groups in South Korean music.

BLACKPINK’s talents in hip-hop and dance-pop helped the all-female squad get ahead early.

BLACKPINK kicked things off with its album Square One. Featuring songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” Square One reinvented typical K-pop elements with an edgier trap-style energy. Eventually, this would become BLACKPINK’s signature sound.

“Whistle” and “Boombayah” left lasting impressions not only in South Korea, but in the U.S. as well. Following its swift climb up the charts, BLACKPINK released Square Two in late 2016. Square Two was a massive success thanks to the tracks “Playing with Fire” and “Stay.” Soon enough, BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to land on the Canadian music charts.

The group’s next single “As If It’s Your Last” hit the airwaves in 2017 and paved the way for a stellar Japanese debut. The group’s self-titled EP included re-recorded Japanese versions of previous songs. After soaring to the top of Japan’s charts, the group followed up in 2018 with Re:BLACKPINK, a re-release of the EP which included both Korean- and Japanese-language versions of each track.

BLACKPINK’s rise took the ultimate turn with its 2018 EP Square Up. International hit single “DDU-DU DDU-DU” was the perfect example of high-energy “K-trap.” The song’s accompanying music video became one of the most-watched K-pop videos on YouTube, with over one billion views. It was no surprise the track also landed BLACKPINK a coveted spot on the Billboard Hot 100, a first for any all-female K-pop group.

The band’s worldwide popularity shifted as they sealed a deal with Interscope/Universal. Later in 2018, a highly-anticipated collaboration alongside popstar and label partner Dua Lipa on “Kiss and Make Up” set BLACKPINK up for more global success. After the song left a memorable mark on the U.S. and U.K. charts, the girl group released another Japanese-language compilation titled BLACKPINK in Your Area.

In 2019, the K-pop quartet expanded its discography with another top-notch EP. Kill This Love set the tone for the band’s upcoming worldwide debut. BLACKPINK’s next single “How You Like That” was its seventh track to climb high on the global charts, proving the band was an international force to be reckoned with.

In addition to Dua Lipa, the group worked closely with pop phenoms like Lady Gaga on “Sour Candy” and Selena Gomez on “Ice Cream.” By securing these collabs, the K-pop band set the standard for their full-length debut.

Due to long-lasting success, BLACKPINK embarked on numerous tours. A string of arena performances from 2018 to 2020 spanned across the globe and kept the band’s popularity at an all-time high. Dedicated fans saw the all-female quartet up close and personal as it put on a must-see show.

2020’s The Album was BLACKPINK’s first full-length studio album, with eight high-energy tracks – including “Bet You Wanna,” featuring rapper Cardi B. With this collaboration and more dance-pop vibes, The Album cemented next-level acclaim among fans and fellow musicians. The LP took well-deserved top spots in countries like South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S.

BLACKPINK’s sophomore album Born Pink took the world by storm in 2022. No one could deny its power, especially after the release of lead single “Pink Venom.” Other favorites like “Shut Down” helped Born Pink set more records for the K-pop genre. In its first week, the LP hit number one in the U.S.

Live reviews

The concert was more than I ever imagined! I love the group, I love the girls, I love the songs and dances!!! The experience was unforgettable beacuse I enjoy listening to their music nonstop and now i saw and heard all songs live! I am so lucky!

But my experience before the concert was a disaster... The thibgs started with the endless queue for merchedinse. I waited for two hours and in the end they told me the lightsticks were sold out? That was so disappointing for me and all people in the queue. Also, yes it was long queue but there were not ever a barricades or anything to keep the lines from queue passing!!! So many people just came and went in the front adn nobody can say anything because they do not have proofe.

Another thing, when the doors opened at 18:30-18:40 nobody entered because the crawd( it was not even a queue) was not even moving a meter! Then the concert started 40mins later because the entering was not orgainsed at all! I am absolutely disappointed by the organisation but at least I tried my best to enjoy the show and one of my favourite groups!

Wow this concert was absolutely amazing. It’s so much better than I expected. I knew it was going to be great but wow... it was amazing. The atmosphere of the concert was outstanding. Even when they just put music videos on at the start everyone was screaming to them. The girls were so nice and were very interactive with the audience. My dad who doesn’t like Kpop enjoyed the concert as well. I’d really recommend seeing this concert.

Omg this show in london was amazing. The energy and atmosphere stay alive all night making the concert fun all the way through. each member did so well as well as jennie, the videos of her being lazy completely cancel out as she was energetic the whole night. they interact with the audience and not just sing and dance. They are so cute and make it enjoyable all the way through. Jisoo is also the cutest thing ever you have to see her live

"It's still like a dream" - BLACKPINK's Rosé shares her first Coachella experience, world tour memories, & more

B LACKPINK's Rosé recently spoke to Dazed Korea for their Dazed Korea Spring Edition 2024 and shared her experience performing at Coachella for the first time. In 2019, BLACKPINK made history as the first K-pop group to take the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Back then, BLACKPINK was on the In Your Area world tour, and Rosé opened up about how it felt to hold concerts in different cities while performing at Coachella. Rosé shared that she made countless memories with her teammates, Jisoo, Jennie, and Lisa. She shared:

"At Coachella the time spent on the stage was as rewarding as the world tour, and I learned a lot from the stage performance. At that time, when I looked at the members, I would automatically laugh. It was a very happy moment."

Rosé revealed that it was a dream for her to perform at Coachella; her first act in 2019 remains her happiest memory. She further continued:

"To a certain extent, this is what I've always dreamed of, and it's still like a dream. I've always imagined what it would be like to perform on the Coachella stage."

The girl group performed some of their hit tracks including DDU-DU DDU-DU, Kill This Love, Kiss, and Make Up featuring Dua Lipa. Meanwhile, Jennie showcased her solo act with her single SOLO . Performing at one of the most esteemed festivals, the group garnered appreciation from attendees and fans for their electrifying performance.

Rosé shares her experience of going on two world tours with BLACKPINK during a Dazed Korea interview

BLACKPINK began their first worldwide concert tour In Your Area on November 10, 2018, starting in Seoul and concluding on February 22, 2020, in Fukuoka, Japan. The girl group showcased their vocal and performing skills to their fans worldwide covering shows in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Thailand, Australia, and many more.

Rosé received cultural experiences and expressed her excitement about performing in different cities. She said (as shared by X user @eleven_digits):

"Every city I visited was more beautiful than I imagined, and it was so beautiful that it was touching. At first, it was because I was there. I felt novel about the culture, character, food, etc. I encountered each city."

BLACKPINK commenced their second world tour BORN PINK WORLD TOUR in September 2022 and concluded in September 2023. The group made unprecedented records by selling out stadiums. They broke Spice Girls' record as the highest-grossing tour by a female group.

Rosé also opened up about going on the second tour and experiencing similar moments again with a growing curiosity for each city's culture. She revealed:

"I observed the life of people around the world more carefully, and my curiosity about the culture of each city will also increase. Also, I can truly feel the differences between the two world tours during this period."

BLACKPINK's Rosé at the RIMOWA As Seen By event

On April 14, 2024, the How You Like That singer was also spotted attending the As Seen By exhibition by the luggage brand. The event was held at Layer 26, Achasan-ro 11ga-gil, Seongdong-gu, in Seoul.

The Pink Venom singer set the internet ablaze as she posed alongside Lewis Hamilton at the event. Other stars like Seventeen's S.Coups and Wonwoo, EXO's Baekhyun and Xiumin, Treasure's Haruto, and Thai actor Mile were also seen attending the event.

The occasion marked the launch of RIMOWA's new seasonal essential colors, papaya and mint. Dazed Korea previously shared a city-style vintage pictorial featuring Rosé for their Spring Issue. This photo shoot was in collaboration with RIMOWA, where the vocalist was seen posing with the new tinted suitcases.

Actor Is Forced To Apologize For Not Doing Fanchants At IU’s Concert

Since the beginning of March, IU has been busy with her latest world tour H.E.R .

As expected, ticketing for IU’s shows hasn’t been easy . And, even if you have a ticket, there may be a chance that you won’t be allowed in.

Fans Call IU To Step Up Amidst EDAM Entertainment’s Ticketing Fiasco

Now, there is even a case where an actor got into the concert with a legally purchased ticket but ended up facing harassment from netizens because he didn’t do fanchants.

IU 1

When IU brought her world tour to Taipei on April 6 and 7, famous actor Kaiko (also known as Ke Zhen Dong ) was among the audience. Kaiko debuted in Taiwan over 12 years ago and rose to stardom after starring in the hit film You’re the Apple of My Eye .

Kaiko 1

Kaiko was spotted on the big screen (wearing sunglasses) during the show, seemingly fanboying over IU, just like a regular fan, with his dad.

Post by @elkoywh View on Threads

When news spread that Kaiko was in attendance, netizens quickly assumed he didn’t pay for his tickets and got in through connections since it was extremely difficult for the general public to score tickets through regular means. This prompted Kaiko’s dad to post a picture of their tickets, clearly showing they paid the regular price.

Kaiko 2

Additionally, a post accusing Kaiko of not doing fanchants went viral.

Post by @csh__0802 View on Threads
Haha, I don’t know what to say. I’ll cheer you on tomorrow, IU!! This concert sucks now because of certain people’s actions. – OP’s caption

Kaiko 1

In the attached image, OP had the following conversation with a friend.

Friend: Kaiko is sitting behind me. OP: Does he know how to do fanchants… Friend: No, he’s been pretty quiet. – OP’s chat

Other netizens were also unimpressed.

Kaiko 2

  • “The background music was even louder than the fanchants. I’m so mad.”
  • “I saw a bunch of influencers and celebrities go in…^_^”
  • “F*ck, a bunch of fake fans.”
  • “Many celebrities attended just to post about it on social media. Meanwhile, I couldn’t f*cking get in. I’m so pissed off.”

Eventually, Kaiko made posts addressing netizens’ accusations.

Post by @kaikaiko View on Threads
It’s not nearly enough to simply like your acting and performance! So it turns out, to like and admire someone… I’ve got lots to learn! Sorry! I’ll put in a great effort to learn! – Kaiko
Netizen: Start learning fanchants from now on. I like you, and I also like IU Kaiko: I didn’t know this was required to see the idol of your dreams! Sorry! I’ll learn. – Chat between netizen and Kaiko

What’s your take on the situation?
