A boatload of party people will start next year off with a bang on the 2024 sailing of Friendship, the annual party cruise from Gary Richards.

Richards, who has long produced music as Destructo, has revealed the Friendship 2024 lineup on Wednesday (Aug. 16), with the bill featuring Skrillex , Bob Moses, Chris Lake, Chris Lorenzo, J. Phlip, Todd Edwards, Nina Las Vegas, Rusko, Mr Carmack and a flurry of other stars, in addition to rising artists including Mary Droppinz, NALA, QRTR and many more.

“I’m always trying to push the envelope of new music by keeping things interesting and exciting,” Richards tells Billboard . “We have five full days, so I wanted to represent as many parts of the globe as possible to keep it spicy. We have artists from Africa, Russia, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, England, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the good ole US of A.”

He continued, “Some fresh new highlights I’m digging right now include VTSS, Vigro Deep, Sun El Musician, Nitepunk, Raven, Mersiv, A Hundred Drums, Nala, QRTR, G-Rex, Mary Droppinz, Safety Trance, Enoo Napa, and Da Capo. And of course my BFFs as always Boys Noize, Skrillex, Chris Lake, Chris Lorenzo, Bob Moses plus, plus, plus all on a private island in Belize.”

Richards launched Friendship in 2018, with the concept echoing that of Holy Ship, the party cruise Richards launched in 2012 via HARD, the electronic festival production company he founded in 2007 and which was acquired by Live Nation in 2012. Richards departed HARD in 2017.

A private captain, who is also a historian, will be your guide as you cruise through the waters of Lake Lure on “ Looking Back ” Aptly named, Looking Back is a 1938 Chris Craft in show-quality condition!

Historic Tour Sites

1917 – REO Speedwagon

Visit the site where Barzellie Ledbetter’s 1917 REO Speedwagon was stranded beneath the waves of Lake Lure in 1927, then recovered in 1971.

1937 – Lodge at Lake Lure

Ride by the 1937 Lodge at Lake Lure, built by volunteers as a rest and relaxation location for North Carolina State Police at a cost of $1 a day. The lack of road access required workers and materials to be transported by donkeys.

1775 – Russell’s Fort

Gaze upon Russell’s Fort, a Revolutionary War outpost that was manned by local militia to monitor the movements of the British loyalist cavalry and their Cherokee allies.

1927 – Lake Lure Dam

Cruise past the 1927 Lake Lure Dam, an innovative compression dam with a hydroelectric plant to light 1000 homes at a time when electricity was a rarity west of Charlotte. The 100-year old generators are still running!

Hickory Nut Gorge

Take pictures with the majestic Hickory Nut Gorge as a backdrop. Home to the mystical “little people” who guarded the ancient Cherokee tobacco trade paths to the West.

Visit the movie sets of classic films such as Dirty Dancing, Firestarter, and Last of the Mohicans.

1930’s – The First Lake Cottage

Discover 1930’s lake life by visiting the first cottage on the lake – the “Little Green Boathouse”. The weekenders cooked by fire, refrigerated food by block ice, drank by mountain spring, bathed in the lake, and read by kerosene light. A Chris Craft boat would occasionally motor past. Those were simpler days.

Cost: $200 per tour. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour.

Location: Guests gather at and depart from the Lake House Restaurant south docks ( 1020 Memorial Hwy, Lake Lure, NC 28746 ). We can also pick you up directly from your waterfront boat dock if you make arrangements with Captain Dave.

Additional Details: Tour length is one hour – extended tours or special events by request. Payment may be made upon arrival with the bartender located at the Lake House Restaurant lower level. Personalized ride for up to 5 passengers (ages 5+) with Captain Dave. Optional two-way communication headset will be provided to all passengers to share your lake tour experience with your friends, family, and Captain Dave. Tours are weather dependent and may be rescheduled due to high winds or rain. All passengers under 13 years old must wear a personal flotation device (PFD). You may bring your own or a PFD can be provided upon request.

Take a journey back in time and learn about the history of Lake Lure. Tours are available on a first come first serve basis.

Looking Back

Back in 1938, Chris Craft designed a special boat to cater to the emerging water sports enthusiasts. Among the many special features was a rear facing bench seat at the stern. This allowed passengers to “Look Back” and easily watch their fellow water skiers. The rear facing seat also allowed for easy fishing. This unique boat was only made in 1938 and 1939. All building stopped in 1940 due to World War II.  During the 2 years of production, a total 70 boats were hand made. Today, there are only 15 of these special boats that have survived. Looking Back is hull number 4 and the oldest known to have survived. Meticulously restored and boasting original wood, motor, and transmission, she is truly a piece of art.

Water is Taupo’s defining element, from the snow on our volcanic peaks to the steam rising from our geothermal vents. But the best way to enjoy it is to get right into or on to our lakes, rivers and hot pools.

Lake Taupo’s clean waters are refreshing but swimmable through spring, summer and autumn (and winter if you’re brave!). You can kayak, fly high above the lake on a parasail, stand-up paddleboard, hire a sailing boat, waterski, wakeboard, or windsurf. 

Lake Taupo changes through the days and seasons, offering many different types of beauty as you cruise its waters. On sunny days, it’s often smooth as glass and as blue as the sky above. When it’s overcast, it can be wreathed in mist and dark green like pounamu (Maori for jade). 

Whatever the weather, a scenic boat cruise by launch, yacht or steamboat always has plenty to see. From native water birds, beautiful bush-clad coves, the evocative Mine Bay Maori rock carvings that tell the story of the great Maori high priest Ngatoroirangi, or even just the clear, rippling water of Lake Taupo with its amazing depth and visibility.

There are also fishing charters and cruises, world-class fly fishing on the rivers, river floats and white-water rafting for all ages.

For those with a taste for adventure, a jet boat trip on the Waikato River combines thrilling action with the chance to see spectacular natural features like the Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids or the ethereal Tutukau Gorge up close.

Departing from the Taupo Marina at 10:30am, climb aboard the 52 ft catamaran Cruise Cat and cruise in comfort and style through Lake Taupo's stunning bays on a 90-minute journey culminating in a close-up view of the famous Maori Rock Carvings.

Enjoy the live commentary as you savour delicious homemade muffin and hot drink. Sit back and unwind in the comfortable booth seating with viewing platforms on two levels. There are tons of activities for kids on board, and some epic photo opportunities.  The Cruise Cat is an excellent all weather boating option.

On the day:

• Start your adventure at Chris Jolly Outdoors with your lake cruise.  Departure is at 10.30am , check in at the T aupo Boat Harbour, Berth 4 on Ferry Road, Taupo, 15 minutes prior to departure.  Wear appropriate clothing to suit the weather on the day of your trip.
• Your jet boat experience at Hukafalls Jet departs at 1pm .  Check in at the base 15 minutes prior to your departure time, 200 Karetoto Road , Taupo.  You may get a little wet while jet boating, so bring a jacket and wear warm clothing should it be a cold day. 

Accessibility:

Chris Jolly Outdoors Lake Cruise - wheelchair access is dependent on lake water levels and size of the wheelchair. Call the office to book prior to travelling to see if the wheelchair can be accommodated during the cruise. Note that there is no wheelchair access to the toilets onboard.  Phone +647 378 0623 to chat.

Hukafalls Jet - accessibility car parks are available directly in front of the Huka Prawn Park restaurant entrance, next door to the base. After checking in a path is available around the base building to take you to the boat boarding area. Staff are available should you require help boarding and disembarking the jet boat.  Some ability is required to hold on to the handrails in the boat but call us to chat if required. • Lake cruise departs at 10:30am, jet boating at 1pm. These times can be changed - call us if you need to adjust your timings.
• Once booked and paid, there are no refunds for cancellations or no-shows.
• If either activity in your Taupō Classics combo is cancelled due to adverse weather or for any other reason by Hukafalls Jet or Chris Jolly Outdoors a full refund will be given for that cancelled activity only.
• These prices are not valid in conjunction with any other offer.
• All normal registration requirements for lake cruising and jet boating must be complied with.
• Tickets are valid for one month: activities are normally completed in the same day but can be completed on separate days; either activity can be completed first.
• Regular daily departures and minimum passenger numbers must be reached to confirm a departure.  We will contact you if the departure in unable to proceed.
• There is a minimum height for all children of 1 metre to ride Hukafalls Jet.

Lake Taupō is a caldera volcano. Its last eruption about 1800 years. These days, Lake Taupō is the largest freshwater lake in the southern hemisphere.

Lake Taupō offers great fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout.

Bring the basics: sunscreen, insect repellent, a muesli bar or two, your own filled water bottle, and a warm jersey. The wind can go right through you on a boat so layering up is always a good idea!If you’d like to go swimming, we suggest togs (Kiwi for swimsuit!), a towel and a spare change of clothes.

Please join us for a mid-week scenic drive to Saguaro Lake, a hidden gem located in our backyard. Passing spectacular rock formations, we arrive at the lake, where we will board the Desert Belle for an eighty-minute cruise. Plan on seeing exotic wildlife, towering canyon walls, and dramatic desert vistas. There will be snacks for purchase but save room for a delicious lunch served outdoors overlooking Saguaro Lake on our return. Please register early, as we have to reserve spots on the Desert Belle.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Disney cruise line worker accused of possessing child sexual abuse material, he’s the 3rd to be arrested this year.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Federal authorities arrested a Disney Cruise Line worker on two federal charges after they said he possessed child sexual abuse material, according to an indictment filed in U.S. District Court on Monday.

Tirso Anthony Neri, 44, was identified in court documents as a crew member on the Disney Dream, based out of Port Everglades.

He is the third worker at the family-oriented cruise line to be arrested on federal child sexual abuse material charges in South Florida this year; fellow Phillippine nationals Alvin Gonzales , 49, and Amiel Trazo, 28, have also been indicted in U.S. District Court in separate cases.

According to a criminal complaint authored by Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Eric Stowers, the investigation into Neri began on Dec. 18, after the Disney Dream arrived at Port Everglades from the Bahamas.

The court documents state that HSI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents went to Neri’s cabin to conduct a border search of his two smartphones.

Authorities said they discovered “numerous sexually explicit photographs and videos of young children whose ages could not be definitively determined.”

Neri claimed in an interview that he is in several Telegram and Facebook Messenger chat groups where he downloads and buys adult pornography, according to the complaint.

When asked specifically about a folder containing content depicting a 17-year-old girl, Neri said he sometimes “obtains folders in the chat groups and saves them to his phone without looking at them and then deletes them after,” the complaint states.

It states that Neri told agents that regarding that specific folder, he must have “saved it to his phone without looking at it and had not deleted the folder.”

Stowers wrote that during a deeper examination, they found more child sexual abuse videos, including those depicting multiple girls, aged as young as 9, as well as a video of a boy, aged 10 to 12.

Neri, who was being held in the Broward Main Jail as of Tuesday morning, is facing counts of possession of child pornography and transportation of child pornography.

“In accordance with our zero-tolerance policy for this kind of alleged behavior, this individual is no longer with the company,” a DCL spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday.
