A river boat cruise through the centre of Lyon with an entertaining onboard commentary is a unique way to discover Lyon.

It’s a relaxing moment away from the traffic as you drift along the beautiful waterways admiring the impressive views.

Sightseeing Cruises

Since 1984 Les Bateaux Lyonnais has been taking passengers along the two rivers that pass through the heart of Lyon. There are six different boats available and the smallest is the 40 person capacity. “St Jean” which is perfect for a short one hour sightseeing trip with cocktails.

There several options including a “discovery tour” which heads north along the Saone to Ile Barbe, an oasis of greenery on the outskirts of the city or the “offbeat tour” which points out Lyon’s impressive architecture including views of the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière as you drift past Vieux Lyon.

You can also take a trip south along the Saone to the Confluence Museum and your ticket includes priority access to the museum.

Dining Cruises

The largest of the company’s boats is the flagship “Hermès”. It’s a beautiful restaurant boat which is available for longer gourmet lunch and dinner cruises. You can choose between a two and half hour lunch or dinner excursion or a five hour lunch cruise.

The Hermès offers an “authentic menu” or a “gourmand menu” and both offer a choice between two main courses. There is a also vegetarian menu, a children’s menu and a special birthday menu.

Location and access

The one hour sightseeing cruises depart from the boat landing opposite 2 Quai des Célestins Lyon 69002 which is on the left bank of the Saone at the foot of the Passarelle du Palais de Justice.

It’s just a short walk from Place Bellecour. The lunch and dinner cruises depart from the left bank of the Rhône river, at the foot of the University Bridge opposite 16 quai Claude Bernard, Lyon 69007.

Les Bateaux Lyonnais tours are available on most days and departure times vary depending on which tour you would like to take.

Rhône Route Classique 2024 - A-ROSA STELLA

We spent a very pleasant week on your Arosa Stella. The buffet was very extensive and tasty. However, we would have preferred the French cuisine in France. But still, we will now have to do something with the regulation of our weight! We also very much appreciated that they also have a good relationship with the weather god.

A trip to admire the beautiful scenery of the Rhône valley (port-to-port cruise)

This was my first rivercruise, very happy with CroisiEurope, the ship and cabins where clean and efficient, the meals where very nice with the wine selection. It was very pleasant going tru the locks and watching the scenery as you float along. Due to the weather we were not able to sail into Martigues, however; we were transported by bus to Martigues, which was better then not going at all. OK. A few of us felt the stop at Port St. Louis can be eliminated, there's not much to see at this place, perhaps a good place to join up for those going on the excursion, but was not a point of any interest. The town of Arles was great, spent ample time there, however; disappointed with the time able to spend at Avignon....just a few hours, a half or full day would be more appropriate to be able to tour without rushing. Be nice to have a more detailed itenerary provided daily about arrival & departure of the ship and anticipated time be able to have at each stop. The night entertainment was minimal, first night Bingo game, then another night dance had a quiz..that was designed to encourage the groupe to dance. The hit was on the before last night, a flamenco dancer and two guitar players performed that was very upbeat and was enjoyed by everyone, they put on a good show. We cruised from Oct 03-06...the weather was good to tour the villages, just a bit cool/windy to spend lots of time on the sun deck...a few more degrees would have been needed to feel real comfortable sitting out which would be fabulous. Overall, happy we got to experience doing a rivercruise.

French Art and History Along the Rhône River (port-to-port cruise)

Sometimes it was difficult to understand the announcements and the daily trips were difficult for the English-speaking translation. There was much explanation in French and not very much explained in English except for one guide. The guides attempted but the amount of information was not anywhere the same amount. Some of the trips were a lot of bus ride and not as interesting as indicated. I assumed that the tour would include more art. I enjoyed having the small number on board. The bus trips included too large of a group for some of the locations.

For those who would like a shorter experience on the river, Lyon City Boat offers a couple of different one-hour cruises. These cruises leave from the Quai des Célestins ( map ) on the Presqu'île .

Note: Although a cruise is included in the Lyon City Card , you must present your card at the ticket booth on the Quai, just at the end of the Passerelle du Palais de Justice , to get a boarding voucher.

The Promenade Découverte autour de l'Île Barbe goes north on the Saône and makes a circle around the small Île Barbe. Site of a 5th century abbey and said to be a favorite spot of Charlemagne , this island today contains private properties as well as an inn and restaurant. Commentary in French and English points out the major sites along the route.

The Promenade Insolite au coeur de la Confluence goes south on the Saône and then north on the Rhône, past the new urban area of the Confluence.

In the summer additional cruises are offered in the mornings and evenings. Check with the Tourist Information Office for specific routes and schedules.

Because many of the sites of touristic interest in Lyon are in a fairly compact area of the Presqu'île and Vieux Lyon , the boat tour offers an easy and comfortable way to see some other areas of the city.

One fun bit of information I learned on the boat tour: the name bateaux mouches , which is both a specific company and a short-hand for boat tours on the Seine in Paris , comes from the fact that the first boats were made in the de la Mouche quartier of Lyon .

However, in the 1950s, a great " poisson d'avril " or April Fool's joke, put forth the story of Jean-Sébastien Mouche , the purported inventor (with the agreement of the Bateaux-Mouches company). In fact, the company today has named its flagship boat the Jean-Sébastien Mouche !

Discover Roman architecture, medieval streets, painted walls and the famous ‘traboules’ — Renaissance style  passageways used for centuries as shortcuts and secret escape routes. Most recently during WWII by the French resistance to escape the gestapo. Shoppers are sure to appreciate the top-quality stores and chic boutiques. Or you may prefer to relax in a sunny pavement café and soak up the ambience. Return to the barge for lunch and a cruise down the river to Vienne. The River Rhône is a major, fast-flowing waterway, where you will pass a variety of barges and pleasure craft. Relax on deck and watch the beautiful scenery unfold before dinner is served.

Tain-l'Hermitage

This morning, savour the thrill of cruising past the magnificent vineyards of the Côte-Rôtie and Côtes du Rhône, which seem to descend right to the river's edge. Spot famous names on signs reminiscent of the Hollywood Hills: Chapoutier, Guigal and Delas, among them. In the afternoon, a wine tasting has been organised for you at a local winery, just steps from where the barge moors. Take time to explore the delights of Tain l'Hermitage, including the famous Valrhona chocolate shop, before returning to the barge for an enchanting dinner.

Relax on the top deck and admire the breathtaking scenery of the Rhône Valley as the barge glides towards Viviers. Cool off in the pool or find a shaded spot to lose yourself in contemplation. Mid-afternoon, your guide takes you on a walking tour of Viviers, a tiny medieval city brimming with historic charm. Return to the barge to relax – perhaps challenge the crew to a game of pétanque or pedal off exploring on one of the barge bikes. Your efforts will be rewarded with another delicious dinner on board. 

Roquemaure and Grignan

After breakfast, your guide escorts you on a scenic drive through the countryside. Stop at a truffle farm to learn about and sample the world-renowned delicacy before continuing to Grignan. This Provençal village, known for its wild roses and 12th-century château. Madame de Sévigné stayed here on many occasions and wrote some of her wittiest and most eloquent letters there, first published in 1725. Enjoy lunch at a charming local restaurant before taking time to explore the quaint village with its cobbled alleyways. Back on board, the barge continues to cruise south to Roquemaure, passing through the Bollène-Écluse, a lock with a 23-metre drop, one of the longest in Europe. Dinner is served on board.

Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Unwind on deck this morning before accompanying your guide to the 14th-century summer home of the Popes of Avignon. Enjoy a tour of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a private tasting of the region’s famous wines. Rejoin the barge for a lunch cruise to Avignon, during which you'll sail past the famous Pont Saint-Bénezet (otherwise known as the Pont d'Avignon). After reaching our mooring, which is opposite the gate to the walled city, alight for a guided tour of Avignon, including the soaring Palais des Papes, or papal palace — don’t miss the gardens with views across the river to Villeneuve-les-Avignon. Afterwards, enjoy free time to shop, sit in a gorgeous square watching the world go by or sample Avignon’s café society. Back on board your buoyant luxury villa, Chef is preparing an epicurean farewell feast. Unwind and share stories of your extraordinary trip.

Awake to enjoy an indulgent breakfast. After, the crew bids you a fond farewell as you disembark for your onward travel arrangements.
