Star Cruises fleet

Star pisces, review of star cruises.

Star Cruises (starcruises.com/sg/en) is owned by Genting Hong Kong (GHK) and is ranked world's 3rd biggest cruise company, following Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD . The company dominates the Asia-Pacific market and is listed on the Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In 2015, GHK introduced the corporation's newest cruise line brand - Dream Cruises . The new company started with 2 newbuilds - both top-luxury mega-liners, built specifically for the Asian / Chinese market.

Another large Chinese cruise brand is the new company (2015-founded) Adora Cruises/CSSC Carnival China Cruise Shipping . At the following link can be found listed all CruiseMapper's news related to Star Cruises owner Genting Hong Kong .

IMPORTANT : On January 19, 2022, the parent company GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd (Malaysia) filed for bankruptcy. On Jan 10th, for insolvency filed the two GHK-owned shipbuilding companies in Germany - MV Werften and Lloyd Werft. On Jan 27th, Dream Cruises filed a winding-up petition with the Bermuda Court for liquidation. and the appointment of the provisional liquidators working with GHK.

NEWS : In late-April 2022, was announced that the docked in Malaysia ships Star Pisces (1990-built), SuperStar Gemini (1992) and SuperStar Aquarius (1993) are listed for scrapping and soon to the beached at Alang India . SuperStar Libra (1988) was last AIS reported on April 7th (in Wismar Germany). The three liners' last crew signed off on May 17th, as new/skeleton crew were hired to take them to the scrapyard for dismantling and recycling.

On August 31, 2022, GHK's Star Cruises Asia Holding Ltd announced entering into a SPA/Share Purchase Agreement to sell its wholly-owned Star Market Ltd (100% of its shares) for US$3,5M/RM15,84M to the company Resorts World Inc Pte Ltd. Resorts World is 50-50 owned by Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay (GHK's former Executive Director) and Genting Berhad (Genting Group's parent company, if which Lim Kok Thay holds ~30% shares). Star Market owns trademarks and intellectual property rights.

Company history

The company's introduction on the global cruise shipping market allowed Star Cruises to tap into profitable and more mature markets in Europe and North America. Its services cater to Asian guests, as well as to Europeans, Australians and North Americans, interested in Asian destinations. Star Cruises chairman was Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, son of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong (founder of Genting Highlands, Malaysia).

Genting Star Cruises (Asia) logo

Star Cruises was established as an associate of Genting Group of Malaysia, incorporated on November 10, 1993, in Bermuda, with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong China . The first ships of the company were two cruise ferries bought from the bankrupted estate of Swedish Rederi AB Slite. Star Cruises was the world's first major cruise company to recruit Filipinos for its ships.

The company purchased several other used vessels in the following years. In 1998, it took delivery of the first newbuild - SuperStar Leo (now Norwegian Spirit) . Sistership SuperStar Virgo (Explorer Dream/Resorts World One) followed in 1999. The same year Star Cruises acquired Sun Cruises.

In 2000, Star Cruises also acquired NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) , including the subsidiaries "Norwegian Capricorn Line" and "Orient Lines", becoming the biggest global cruise line in the world. Norwegian Capricorn Line's operations were soon merged into Star Cruises. Before the NCL purchase, Star Cruises had several other newbuilds (either under construction or planned), but following the merger, most of them joined NCL's fleet. However, in August 2007, Star Cruises sold 50% of NCL (for USD 1 billion) to Apollo Management, retaining just 28% stake in NCL.

In 2001, Star Cruises founded the sister company "Cruise Ferries", which started operations in July with the passenger ferry Wasa Queen on short itineraries between Hong Kong and Xiamen. These were followed by overnight gambling cruises - roundtrip from Hong Kong and from Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur). Wasa Queen stopped operating and was sold to another company in 2007, and eventually was scrapped in 2013.

The then-largest ship in the fleet - SuperStar Leo - was transferred in 2004 to Norwegian Cruise Line to take over Norwegian Sky voyages. Since 2006, the trend has been that newbuilds were to be constructed for NCL, and the old ships in the Norwegian fleet would be transferred to Star Cruises fleet in Asia.

In 2008, both Orient Lines and NCL America brands were discontinued, with Orient's sole ship, ms Marco Polo, sold to the Greece-based Global Maritime. The same year, the first ship from NCL Norwegian was transferred to the fleet of Star Cruises as SuperStar Libra .

In 2011, Star Cruises received a brand new hull art. SuperStar Aquarius , Star Pisces , and SuperStar Virgo won their new attire. On April 27, 2012, it was announced that Norwegian Dream will join Star Cruises fleet and be renamed to SuperStar Gemini starting service in 2012.

On October 7, 2013, Star Cruises announced that together with their parent company, Genting Hong Kong had entered into an agreement with Meyer Werft, Germany for the construction of one new vessel. The vessel will be able to accommodate 3,364 passengers at double occupancy and will be delivered in Fall 2016.

On February 10, 2014, Star Cruises announced that a second ship was ordered and scheduled for delivery by Fall 2017. On February 9, 2015, the first steel cutting ceremony was held for Genting World at Meyer Werft shipyard. Both newbuilds will weigh 150,000 GT.

In May 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed a partnership deal with Wirecard (digital payments / online shop development company) for implementing a fleetwide onboard payment system. The system ("Quick Pay") was first installed on World Dream and Genting Dream, then launched on SuperStar Virgo. "Quick Pay" allows the passenger to be in full control of their onboard money spending - including pre-authorized limits, account management, monitoring, paying the total bill at disembarkation. The technology is based on scanning individual QR codes (during check-in, in staterooms or via the ship's intranet network, then selecting the "Quick Pay" option. Payments can be made via Alipay (Chinese online payment platform) and the credit cards Visa, American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club, JCB, UnionPay. The mobile app allows passengers to set up pre-authorized amounts for themselves, as well as for friends and family members.

On March 2, 2018, via letters and emails sent to all booked customers, GHK announced that the liner SuperStar Libra ends its passenger shipping operations for Star Cruises on June 27, 2018. Since August 2018, the vessel serves as a hotel ship in Wismar (Germany) for the shipbuilding company MV Werften. SuperStar Libra is permanently docked (moored) at MV Werften Wismar shipyard's quay. Since April 2016, GHK fully owns MV WERFTEN - a new company incorporating the 3 Nordic Yards in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - the shipyards in Rostock , Stralsund , and Wismar.

(new) Genting Global-Class cruise ships

On May 10, 2016, the parent company GHK (Genting Hong) signed with Lloyd Werft Group in Wismar Germany a shipbuilding contract for all 10 new cruise vessels . In 2015, GHK purchased a majority stake in Lloyd Werft (dockyard in Bremerhaven Germany ). In 2016, GHK purchased Lloyd Werft's remaining 30%, plus the three shipyards owned by Nordic Yards (Wismar, Warnemunde, Stralsund), thus forming Lloyd Werft Group.

Genting Star Cruises new ship (Global-Class)

Of the 10 newbuilds, 6 are riverboats plus 2 ocean-going (all 8 for the GHK's subsidiary Crystal Cruises ) and 2 are mega liners (for Star Cruises and Dream Cruises). The new GHK liners are sisterships of the Global-Class, each with gross tonnage 204,000 GT tons, LOA length 341 m (1120 ft) and passenger capacity 5000 (lower berths). Ship deliveries were scheduled for 2020 (for Dream Cruises) and 2021 (for Star Cruises). The ship-order has optional 2 more vessels of the same class.

Global Class ships feature artificial intelligence technologies (including facial and voice recognition for expedited passenger services - boarding, disembarkation, payments), robots (performing mundane tasks), Cineplex (theme park), Asian spa complex, multiple Asian dining venues (including fast food), both affordable and premium retail shopping facilities, roller coaster, water park (with 5 slides), surf simulator. Staterooms are designed for Asian families and can sleep up to 2-4 persons. Most cabins are with two (split) bathrooms. Each liner has 8 sets of escalators and 28 elevators.

Vessel's waste and water management system was provided by Evac (world's leading company building integrated waste-wastewater-water management systems). The company's Complete Cleantech Solution package includes a vacuum collection system, wastewater treatment plant, dry and wet waste treatment plant, freshwater desalination plants (based on reverse osmosis). The freshwater generation plants have the capacity to produce over 3000 m3 of freshwater per day. The contract with Evac was signed on January 3, 2017.

On January 9, 2017, was signed a contract with ABB for delivery of Azipods (power-propulsion units), automation systems and the marine software for all 5 new Genting cruise ships ordered for both brands - Crystal and Star. The 3x Crystal vessels are from the Crystal Endeavor series (polar-class expedition yachts).

These are the first purpose-built ships for the contemporary Chinese market regarding onboard amenities and services (food, cultural events, shows, enrichment programs, shopping, tours/excursions. Cruise ticket prices will be affordable. In May 2019 were unveiled more Global-Class vessel details. The ships will have industry's first theme park at sea, largest cinema at sea, world's longest roller coaster at sea, self-guided robotic assistants, industry's largest standard staterooms (sized 20 m2), Bluetooth cabin door locks, touch-screen control panel, smartphone-control of different en-suite functions (mood lighting, air-conditioning, etc).

On March 8, 2018, at MV Werften shipyard ( Bremerhaven Germany ) started the construction of the first of the two Global-Class Genting cruise liners.

Genting Star Cruises new ship (Global-Class)

The GHK-owned Lloyd Werft Group has the capacity to produce annually 2 mega liners (over 200,000 GT tons each) plus 1 mid-sized vessel (around 50,000 GT tons). Lloyd Werft has 2 new covered drydocks, a new ship launching platform and over 0,5 million m2 of covered fabrication halls.

In December 2018, Genting Cruise Lines announced plans to build smaller-sized (Contemporary-class) ships for Star Cruises from the German shipbuilder MV Werften. The first liner will be delivered in 2023. In 2019, SuperStar Virgo was renamed "Explorer Dream" and transferred to Dream Cruises in April 2019.

Star Cruises shipboard experience

The big appeal to western clients of Star Cruises is that its ships not only take guests around Asia but also let you experience an Asian lifestyle.

"SuperStar" ships were the first to offer the largest number of restaurants afloat. This innovation later passed on to Norwegian's "freestyle dining". SuperStars Virgo and Leo offer Italian, Asian, Japanese and Chinese restaurants. Virgo also has the only Indian restaurant afloat. Naturally, Star Cruises ships offer the usual formal dining room, casual buffets, and poolside grills. All dining venues offer open seating for ultimate flexibility.

Shipboard entertainment features spectacular shows by Chinese acrobats, card rooms (Mah Jong), private rooms for parties, karaoke rooms. Onboard service is friendly, impeccable, discreet. Star Cruises has a no-tipping policy and brags with one of Asian cruising industry's highest crew-to-passenger ratios - one staff member for every two passengers.

Star Cruises predominantly markets Asian travelers. The internationally focused SuperStar Virgo attracted passengers from Japan, Malaysia, Australia New Zealand, as well as adventurous-spirited North Americans and Europeans.

In 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed an agreement with Okinawa Agricultural Cooperatives Association and Leospo Inc. Following the partnership, on select GHK-owned cruise liners is offered Okinawa-sourced food and local produce.

  • The new onboard dining options include the famous Okinawa Wagyu beef and Okinawa Agu pork. The offer is available on select ships and during summer when they cruise to Okinawa.
  • In 2018 (April through November), these premium food specialties were available on three boats (World Dream, SuperStar Aquarius, SuperStar Gemini, SuperStar Virgo). The exclusive gourmet dishes were served via specially designed theme menus. They also included the traditional Japanese dishes Shabu Shabu (with ingredients stirred in cooking pot) and Teppanyaki (iron griddle cooked food), as well as BBQ Okinawa Agu Pork and the wok-fried Okinawa beef (with bitter gourd garlic) and Okinawa beef rib eye (with sweet plum sauce).

Genting fly-cruise deals

In June 2017, Genting Cruise Lines (grouping the companies Dream Cruises and Star Cruises) and Asia's largest airline "China Southern Airlines" signed a Memorandum of Understanding/MoU on an exclusive "flight and cruise" partnership in China.

  • The deal is for discounted fly-cruise deals on cruises leaving from homeport Guangzhou-Nansha - a premium travel hub and cruise homeport in Asia.
  • By this strategic agreement, both China Southern Airlines and Genting combined their resources in sales, marketing, promotions, and product development, creating a competitive travel product by the new "Air+Cruise+Travel" program. The program targets both individual and group travelers.

Free Birthday cruise

Star Cruises offers free Birthday cruise deals on select ships and departure dates. Company's "Free Birthday Celebrant Package" consists of:

  • Cabin decorations (set up on the embarkation day)
  • 0,5 kg chocolate cake
  • Birthday card
  • Cruise voucher (at the ship's Reception) is applicable at onboard retail shops and spa/wellness outlets. To use the voucher, you need to swipe your access card at the outlets. When you settle your bill during checkout, the voucher's value is deducted from the total amount due.
  • Free Wifi vouchers for 2 passengers for the entire cruise (at the ship's Reception). Wi-Fi connections on Start Cruises ships are available in all public areas and in staterooms.

Genting Cruises Private Island Resort

In early November 2017, GHK corporation signed an agreement with the Macleod Island 's owner "Tint Tint Myanmar Group" (headquartered in Yangon Burma ) to jointly built new cruise ship facilities on this private island.

Cruise line private Islands are among the best-known assets of the world's largest cruise shipping companies ( Carnival Corporation , RCCL-Royal Caribbean , NCL , MSC ). However, most such private island resorts are located in the Caribbean.

GHK's partnering with Tint Tint Myanmar Group makes Macleod Island the first Asian private cruise resort destination. It is opened exclusively for Genting cruise ship tourists visiting the island via ships operated by the GHK-owned Dream Cruises and Star Cruises. Among GHK's other Asian projects are Guangzhou-Nansha Port development (in China) and Port Danang (in Vietnam).

Macleod Island was first visited by a Star Cruises ship (SuperStar Libra) on November 3, 2017. The 5-night / 6-day itinerary also included Penang Malaysia  and Phuket Thailand .

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Despite the global Coronavirus crisis , Genting Cruise Lines (shipowner) didn't suspend its fleet's passenger shipping operations. Instead, the company (parent of Dream Cruises and Star Cruises) expanded its cancellation policy with "Cruise As You Wish". It allowed all existing and new bookings made before or on October 30, 2020 (initially July 31), to be canceled penalty-free up to 48 hours (prior departure).

These bookings were fully refunded (100%) via FCC (future cruise credit). With rebooking, the amount of the fare paid is automatically transferred to any Dream Cruises or Star Cruises itinerary starting before or on March 31, 2021 (initially December 31 2020).

Itinerary of Star Cruises

Following on Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit held in Qingdao, Star Cruises celebrated the inaugural cruise of SuperStar Aquarius from her new homeport Qingdao on June 13, 2018. Guests from the Shandong peninsula and neighboring cities are now able to enjoy journeys to Japanese destinations like Beppu , Fukuoka City , Nagasaki , and Sasebo . The flagship SuperStar Virgo also offered Qingdao homeport itineraries (November 2018 through March 2019).

Star Cruises officially set a record number of homeport deployments done by the same brand in Port Qingdao. By homeporting here SuperStar Virgo, the company became the only cruise line in history to have 2 ships homeported in Qingdao during the same year.

While cruising at sea, passengers enjoy a hassle-free experience onboard SuperStar Aquarius, complemented by Asian hospitality and delicacies unique to Star Cruises. The flagship of Star Cruises, SuperStar Virgo, calls Qingdao homeport starting in November 2018, taking passengers on 4-night voyages to Kagoshima , Fukuoka, and Nagasaki.

Note: Starting operations for Dream Cruises in mid-April 2019, SuperStar Virgo was renamed "MS Explorer Dream" and homeported in Shanghai (China). For the winter season 2020, Explorer Dream was deployed in Australia-New Zealand.

Complete List: Here’s What Happened to the Star Cruises Fleet

  • March 15, 2023

SuperStar Aquarius

With the sales of the SuperStar Aquarius and the SuperStar Gemini in late 2022, the entire Star Cruises fleet has had its fate sealed.

Here’s what happened to the ships operated by the cruise line before its collapse:

SuperStar Aquarius Year Built: 1993 Capacity: 1,529 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

In November, the SuperStar Aquarius became the latest cruise ship formerly owned by Star Cruises to be sold to a scrapyard.

Renamed Arius, the 1993-built vessel spent several months laid up in Sri Lanka before departing on its final voyage to India – where it’s currently being dismantled .

SuperStar Gemini Year Built: 1992 Capacity: 1,472 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

The former SuperStar Gemini also ended up beached for scrapping in November. Like its sister ship SuperStar Aquarius, the 1992-built vessel spent several months docked in Sri Lanka before heading to India.

Renamed Gem, the former Norwegian Dream is now being recycled at the Alang Shipbreaking Yard , with its building materials and fixtures being sold off or repurposed.

Star Pisces Year Built: 1991 Capacity: 1,384 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped

In mid-2022, the Star Pisces became the second cruise ship of the former Star Cruises fleet to be sold to a scrapyard.

One of the company’s original vessels, the cruise ferry ended its 31-year sailing career after being beached at India’s Alang Ship Breaking Yard in July .

The Taipan Year Built: 1989 Capacity: 64 guests Location: Singapore Fate: Sold for further service

In May 2022, the Taipan became the only cruise ship in the former Star Cruises fleet to find a new operator.

Previously being used for charters and incentive cruises in Southeast Asia, the 32-cabin mega yacht was acquired by OM Ships , a German religious organization who plans to transform it into a missionary ship and floating bookshop.

SuperStar Libra Year Built: 1988 Capacity: 1,494 guests Location: Aliaga, Turkey Fate: Scrapped

The SuperStar Libra was also sold for scrapping in 2022. After ending its public operations in 2018, the former Star Cruises vessel arrived at the Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard in May .

Before ending its sailing career, the 1988-built cruise ship spent its last years serving as a floating hotel at the MV Werften – a Genting-owned shipyard in Wismar, Germany.

Cool Cruiser

Hi everyone,

I am very happy to report that Star Cruises has announced that they will deploy the SuperStar LIBRA to Keelung, Taiwan, from end June until late November of this year. It is great to have a ship back here in Taiwan. Libra will offer cruises to Naha and Ishigaki Japan, High Seas cruises, and a new destination, Punghu Island in Taiwan.

So many people in Taiwan are so pleased that Star Cruises is back. SuperStar Libra will be the biggest cruise ship to ever be homeported in Taiwan. I know the locals will really like this ship, as will all the expats living in Taiwan. I am looking forward to my first cruise aboard Libra as soon as the ship begins service. I hope that perhaps some of you on this Cruise Critic board may have the opportunity to be in Taiwan and find the time to take a cruise with Libra.

Will keep you all updated as to itineraries and sailings dates when they become available.

Glad that the Libra and the Taiwan cruises are appealing to you. The Naha and Ishigaki cruise are especially nice and very relaxing.

Hope you do get the chance to sail with Libra from Taiwan. You'll be very welcome here.

Star Cruises, “The Leading Cruise Line in Asia-Pacific" will reposition SuperStar Libra to Keelung, Taiwan for a seasonal deployment between June and October 2007. After two years, Star Cruises will return to Taiwan to yet again bring to this part of the world her magical cruises.

This charming vessel is scheduled to arrive in Keelung on 29 June 2007 where she will commence offering a combination of 2 and 3-night cruises to destinations in Taiwan and Japan. The 2-night cruises will call at the new and popular destination of Penghu, located off the southeast coast of Taiwan and Ishigaki in Japan while the three night itineraries will call at Ishigaki and Naha, Okinawa in Japan. The new season will see SuperStar Libra making her maiden call to Penghu on 4 July.

Cruisers will continue to enjoy an exciting array of onboard facilities and activities including international performances, themed parties, food and beverage specials, fitness center, golf driving range, swimming pool, twin hot tubs, sports deck and a never ending string of other fun activities.

“The repositioning of SuperStar Libra to Taiwan is part of the company’s seasonal deployment strategy to mobilize Star Cruises’ fleet and thus bringing the Star Cruises’ experience of its variety of exciting destinations and ports-of-call to and from various parts and countries of the region”, said Mr. Chong Chee Tut, Chief Operating Officer of Star Cruises.

“SuperStar Libra’s stint in Taiwan will provide an opportunity for the Taiwan market to once again experience cruising as an exciting holiday option at sea featuring a combination of onboard dining, entertainment and recreation options while sailing to exciting destinations”, said Ms. Jean Teo, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing of Star Cruises. “The ship will undergo preparations to cater to the needs and demands of cruisers from this region in line with Star Cruises’ philosophy of always offering the best cruise experience possible to all its cruisers”, Ms. Teo added.

Star Cruises will continue to uphold the highest quality service standards through its warm and authentic Asian hospitality as well as safety standards. And no matter where Star Cruises’ fleet sets sail, it will continue to bring to the world truly unforgettable memories! All these and more from Asia’s favourite cruise line.

You probably have more infrormation on the Libra than I do. It is a 30 to 40 years old ship which was transfered out from NCL and was homeport in Houston, Texas. I have been on the ship before when it was on a repositioning cruise out of Singapore. It is a " tramp " cruise ship. Yes tramp compared to the Virgo or the Gemini.

Hi John, nice to hear from you.

Actually the SuperStar Libra was built in 1988 for NCL as the Seaward, then later to become the Norwegian Sea. So that makes Libra 19 years old.

I certainly had a good chuckle over your description of Libra as being a "tramp" cruise ship compared to Virgo and Gemini.;) Of course Libra is not as deluxe as Virgo, but nevertheless, many past pax found the ship to be comfortable and having nice interiors. One very good point of the Libra is that this ship is very well connected to the sea. You have great sea views from numerous public rooms and of course the outdoor decks. Another good point, in my opinion at least, is that the Libra feels like a "real ship," as compared to the newer box boats out there today.

If you will John, I would love to hear why you felt the Libra was inferior. I think it will be most interesting and informative to hear your opinions and share them with us all. And thanks for replying to this thread.

It surprises me that it is only 19 years old. You just take a look at it and it must be older than that.

Problems with various breakdowns are too numerous to mention. Well you will be able to tell before long what the ship is like and give us a long write up about it. Cheers.

Indeed it will be my pleasure to write my comments and opinions of the Libra after I have cruised.

Below is a recent photo of the ship.

Thanks for the recent photo of the Libra, she does have the “sleek lines” of a Cruise Ship of that era, and I have to say that the newer mega ships to me look ugly from their outside appearance.;)

We have these “Sheep Ships” come into Fremantle, that take ten of thousands of live sheep from Australia to the Middle East, and they are all accommodated above decks in what looks like, from a distance, the many decks of “balconied” staterooms on these mega ships!:p

Call me old fashioned or whatever but the likes of the Libra, the Gemini even the “old” QE2 look like Cruise ships and not sheep ships!

OK I will grant you that the quality of inside of the likes of the Celebrity Millennium Class Ships, which we have cruised on, and the facilities provided, are simply first class, but!

Anyway I, like you, smiled when she was referred to as a “Tramp”, and I am sure you are correct in saying she will provide Cruisers with many a marvelous voyage.:)

Regards, Bruce

No ill thoughts intended. Just my experience and opinion. Everybody is entitled to their opinion, right? Thought I post my opinion so that people don't get carried away by their exprections.

Nice to hear from you mate, and you are totally correct in your proposition that everyone is entitled to there own opinion, and what a drab world it would be if we all thought alike, and only cruised on NCLA!;)

However I rather thought that as a “fan” of Star Cruises you might have been a little more generous towards the Libra, given that we can only make assumptions at this early stage.

I am also unsure of just what peoples “expectations” might be of her, as I have no first hand knowledge, and would rather bow to Mike’s opinions and recommendations, as another big fan of Star Cruises.:)

It is to be hoped that she doesn’t end up as simply a Floating Casino, but then again other peoples opinions may be that, that is what is wanted.

Catch you on Gemini one day.

Your mention of the "sheep ships" made me smile and bring back a memory of the ex Cunard Ambassador, which was sold after suffering a fire and converted to a "sheep ship." Photo attached:rolleyes: (sorry, I do not know the author of this photo)

I am quite sure that SuperStar Libra will give many thousands of Taiwanese and hopefully some westerners other than myself, a very nice cruise experience. I believe the Libra will be very well accepted here in Taiwan. Although the ship currently does have a fairly large casino onboard, Libra is still most definitely a cruise ship. There will be some modifications done to Libra to suit the Taiwan market, such as adding a buffet to The Taj restaurant, but all in all, no major alterations are expected.

Wishing you a great cruise aboard Gemini in May.

Have had the same thoughts about some of the new ships looking like the sheep ships that come into Freo!

Mike - love the picture of the Libra - it's keeping me sane as I pack yet another carton for the move approaching soon!

Hang in there! All your moving will be over and done vefore you know it.

Just keep thinking about another cruise and it'll get you through;)

It strikes me that they should convert LIBRA to a casino ship and leave AQUARIUS intact and base her in Taiwan rather than making her a casino ship!

Having been on both in their previous incarnations, AQUARIUS is a much nicer ship. The "stretch" in the late '90s was quite detrimental to her but I still think she is far superior to LIBRA.

I do not want to discourage anyone from taking LIBRA but she is not a ship I would go all the way to Taiwan to sail in if I lived someplace far away like Australia... Unless I really, really liked the itinerary.

Certainly she cannot be compared either to a mega-ship like VIRGO or to a small upscale ship like GEMINI. I would say she is more like PISCES but a bit older and plainer. (In fact, even though she has always been a cruise ship, she is based on a Baltic ferry design that was essentially the generation of Viking Line ship before PISCES.)

Nonetheless she is an adequate vessel, and will probably be popular with the local market in Taiwan where there is not a tremendous amount of competition. She will probably be better-received there than smaller ships like CAPRICORN or ARIES were even though those were much nicer vessels IMHO.

Gather the season for LIBRA last year in the Mediterranean was a fizzer ? too much competition as IIRC Star put up Med itineraries for 2007 but then withdrew some months ago . In anycase LIBRA would have been competing with other vessels in the Star Group in Marco Polo and various NCL boats plying the Mediterranean - so did'nt really make sense . Also reading between the lines in Star quarterly reports the LIBRA Indian seasonal deployments have not been as well supported as they expected . (For one the itineraries would not excite me to fly from Aus , they looked quite boring and far too short.)

So whats the go for LIBRA after this years Taiwanese season back to India, or perhaps to Aus as America/Holland line are now working out of here each Aus summer with the Statendam ?

I agree that Libra is not a "destination ship" herself and would not warrant long haul air flights just to cruise with this ship. But, I am sure Libra will be liked here in Taiwan. There are many public rooms available onboard, which the Taiwanese do like and the casino space should prove adequate for the market here, as the Taiwanese, like most Asians, do enjoy gambling. To my knowledge, there will be no major alterations made to the ship when Libra enters dry-dock before heading to Taiwan. One addition that I do know of is that a buffet station will be put in "Taj by the Bay" restaurant, which will be most welcome by the locals here.

As of now, after Libra's Taiwan season ends, the ship will return to Mumbai to continue the Indian cruise season.

On 21 March, Star Cruises Taiwan hosted a press conference to introduce the launch of SuperStar Libra sailings from Keelung, Taiwan. Press attendance was very good and the ship was introduced to everyone with promo movies and slide shows. The itineraries were discussed as well with the help of a route map projected on a screen.

Below is the itinerary map. Although it is in Chinese, I will tell you that the port of call on the west coast of Taiwan is Penghu Island. On the east coast of Taiwan, all the ports are Japanese Islands.

Beginning with the topmost port, that is Naha, Japan. Next down is Ishigaki Island and the bottom most island is Yonaguni Island.

The itineraries include 4D/3N Sunday departures that sail to Naha and Ishigaki, or 4D/3N cruises that call at Naha only, and overnight at the Island.

There also are 3D/2N cruises to Ishigaki departing on various dates.

High Seas cruises are also offered where the Libra sails towards Yonaguni Island, but does not call at the port.

The Penghu Island cruises are 3D/2N and departs Keelung and sails around the northern tip of Taiwan and then heads to the west coast of the island and arrives at Penghu. On the return segment of the cruise the Libra heads north and circles the southern tip of Taiwan and then heads towards Yonaguni waters and finally returns to Keelung.

The photos below are from the press conference.

I hope that maybe some Cruise Critic members may be able to cruise with Libra this season.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks for the update and nice pictures of SSL.

We will have to wait a bit more before we travel to Taiwan to board her, as we are booked on the RCI Splendour later this year and P&0 Ventura for next year.

Meantime I will regularly pop in to check this thread and the going ons.

Cheers and back later.

Great to hear from you! You certainly have 2 nice cruises lined up, which I know you will thoroughly enjoy. Maybe, just maybe you will be able to squeeze in a "side-trip" and sail with Libra ex-Taiwan sometime next year.;) That would be lovely.

I am greatly looking forward to my first cruise in July and others until the end of the season in October.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am very happy to finally be able to post the official itineraries and sailing schedule for SuperStar LIBRA ex-Keelung, Taiwan.

This should be a very successful season for Libra with the varied and interesting ports of call and the convenient length of the cruises. Something for everyone.

Here's hoping to maybe see some of you CC members sailing Libra from Taiwan and enjoying real Asian cruising with the charming local Taiwanese passengers and of course the brilliant Asian staff/crew onboard Libra.

Click this link for the schedules and itins.

http://www.starcruises.com/Itineraries/Taiwan/index.html

I have look at the schedule for the Libra that you posted.

It looks like a mixed bag to me. Casino cruises and destination cruises. I don't know how similar the schedule is from the Gemini when it was home port in Taiwan. Is the cruising season in Taiwan really that short, 4 months.

I don't know if you are happy with the schedule. It looks to me like the Taiwan government allows them to operate more like the Hong Kong model than the Singapore model i.e. strict control over the cruise to nowhere (1 per week). This 1/2 hour techinical stopover is a puzzle to everybody and must be some sort of compromise with Star Cruises.

Enjoy your cruises.

The itinerary for Libra is somewhat similar to Gemini's in the past, but not exactly. Libra will introduce the new port of call, Penghu Island. Also, Libra will be doing a few more overnight cruises by popular demand. Gemini used to have a fixed sailing schedule with departures every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, whereas Libra's is not fixed, but varied. I actually like the current Libra schedule. It is very difficult for the local Taiwanese to take too many days off from work. So Libra's schedule has something for everyone, from a quick overnight getaway, to a more leisurely 3d/2n cruise to the "extravagant" 4d/3n cruises which goes to Naha and Ishigaki, Japan.

The season for Taiwan is usually much longer. But this depends on the availability of a ship. In general the season can start from mid April and end November. Sometimes the ships ended in February. There have been times when I have celebrated Christmas and New Years' aboard one of Star's ships sailing ex-Keelung. This year the Libra has to return to India deployment, hence the short season. If all goes well this year in Taiwan, next years' season may be longer, or possibly we may get a new transfer from NCL.

Indeed the "technical call" at Yonaguni is to fullfill Taiwan Government regulations which require foreign flagged ships to call at, or enter the waters of a foreign country before returning to Taiwan.

I am greatly looking forward to my first cruise this year aboard the Libra. I have a positive feeling that Libra will be widely accepted by the Taiwanese. Also, Libra will be the largest ship to ever be homeported in Keelung. I shall glady tell you all my opinions and experiences after I sail.

For any of you who may possibly be in my part of the world this summer and perhaps thinking of cruising with Libra, I am inserting a link to the comprehensive and interesting shorex that will be offered onboard SuperStar Libra.

I have done these shorex before, when Gemini and Aries were homeported here in Taiwan. They are very nice indeed, and not rushed. These new shorex seem to be updated versions with some new additions.

Here is the link: http://www.starcruises.com/Fleet/Libra/tours.html

Not too long now until Libra is officially welcomed into Keelung Harbor on her Maiden arrival, by the Keelung Harbor Bureau and Star Cruises will host an Inaugural Ceremony onboard the Libra on 29 June. This should be a very special event.

Happy cruising to everyone.

I went onboard this lady on its first cruise(1 Jan) from Singapore. The ship is very comfortable, warm and feels like "real" cruising. The ship is a little worn out at some spots, but im sure it'll be solved at the coming dry-dock.

Surprisingly, I do not miss the Virgo whilst onboard Libra!

There are a few port Star Cruises Terminal in Malaysia and Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal is one of them. I boarded Star Cruises SuperStar Libra at Swettenham Pier but of course you can choose Port Klang and East Malaysia too. It was my first time on a Star Cruises and I was pretty excited. Before this I thought only rich people can afford to board a Star Cruises but it was affordable; around RM 300+ per person. When I reached the gate, the staff are very friendly, they greeted me and also passed me the room key. The first thing my sister and I do was of course check in! The room is very simple, two single beds, one desk, and toilet. Of course There are better rooms as well, depending on how much you willing to spend. We then head straight to the dining room. There are two dining room, one Chinese food and one Western food. The food was awesome, I love it! Besides these two dining hall are for free, there are other restaurant as well of course you will need to pay for it. Besides the pool and other sport facilities, basically all other thing you would need to pay for it. The karaoke, spa, and duty free shopping center. Our ticket comes with complimentary show at Stardust Lounge, it was like circus but a simpler version. It was okay. When the night gets younger, they have rated 21 show too. Our parents went for the show so we went for a bar at Coconut Willy's the poolside bar. It was super windy and the cruise was so wobbly, eventually we got seasick and lied still on the bed, looking at the TV screen. Overall it was not a bad experience but cruise is really not a thing for me since I easily have motion sickness. Tips: (1) There is absolutely no network on the cruises, don't bother to use your phone and wifi is expensive. (2)You don't need cash on the cruise because you are given a card to swipe on everything you spend and pay it before you left, be careful to spend too much!

Family vacations are the best. This time a vacation on a cruise is just extraordinary. I highly recommend this mini getaway if your family members decided to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life. It felt like I am writing an essay if I were to elaborate my feelings towards this trip. It was my second time on a cruise. I won't want to mention the deep thoughts of how excited I am or how many days have I been counting down to let it happen, but hell yeah, THIS IS JUST SOOOOO EXCITING! It's like imagine going through a glamour life like how the celebrities do in movies! So because it's Malaysia, so we departed at Penang. The cruise will stop by Phuket and then return back to Penang. I took the 4 days 3 nights package, amounted to about RM 2k per pax. There are just soooooo many facilities and sooooo many activities going on at the same time, I had a hard time selecting what to do when I am on board. If you can see from the pictures, there are duty free shopping, karaoke, cinema, a gym, swimming pool, heck loads of eateries to dine in, photo gallery and some other on board shopping. This is like heaven, I'm like positioned in a moving entertainment center! I wish everyday is like that. The accommodation was pretty decent. Although in cabins, it doesn't make us feel like we're staying in a cabin. There are a couple of choices for bed selections, it can be single beds or double beds. My family took one double and 2 single rooms. Food choices are aplenty. There are about 8 restaurants on board, some chinese food, some bars, some buffet style, and some of them operates 24 hours! Don't even need to worry about being hungry in the middle of the night! This is a perfect honeymoon vacation or a family vacation. If I have budget, I will consider going to other countries to try out their cruise as well :) till then, hope you guys enjoyed your travels with Star Cruise Libra :)
