Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis Star in New Travel Show Based in Italy

The announcement of the show comes over a year after they were spotted filming in Rome together

Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis have teamed up for something delicious.

The two old friends have a food and travel show premiering on the new streaming service Discovery+ on January 4, 2021. Bobby and Giada in Italy follows the pair as they cook and eat their way through De Laurentiis' home country.

"Exciting news....All your favorite shows, including a new series ‘Bobby and Giada in Italy,’ are coming to #discoveryplus on January 4th! Follow @discoveryplus to stay in the loop on what’s coming… it’s gonna be good," said Flay, 55, on his Instagram announcement.

The new streaming service from Discovery launches on January 4 as well. Along with original content, Discovery+ will stream television shows from Food Network, HGTV, TLC, and more for $4.99 per month.

De Laurentiis, 50, and Flay were first spotted in Rome filming the project back in September 2019 . Flay first teased the trip with an Instagram story aboard a flight: “On my to one of my favorite places,” he wrote. When he arrived, Flay made sure to stop by hot spots like Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori, and the Spanish Steps.

De Laurentiis was equally excited about visiting the city where she was born, kicking things off with a photo of herself jumping in the streets. “There’s no place like ROME ❤️,” she said.

At the time, De Laurentiis had been giving her fans glimpses into the secret project on her Instagram stories. At one point she shared a video of her gorgeous floral wardrobe getting steamed, and then followed up with a clip of herself wearing it on set.

The Truth About Bobby And Giada In Italy

Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis smiling in Rome

Whether you're dreaming up your next Italian vacation from the confines of your couch, or looking to catch more of some of your favorite Food Network stars, Bobby and Giada in Italy is what culinary dreams are made of. The new show, available exclusively on streaming platform Discovery+, features celebrity chefs Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis living 'la dolce vita' in Rome and Tuscany.

More specifically,  the show is made up of four hour-long episodes, in which the two chefs "immerse themselves in the culinary traditions of Italy, soaking in the history and energy behind some of their favorite locations they have visited through the years, all the while savoring the dishes that continue to make Italy a go-to destination for global cuisine." After watching the whole series, we can confirm there's no shortage of beautiful Italian landscapes, luxurious fresh ingredients, and decadent Italian dishes, leaving us with a major carbonara craving and an itch to travel. You've been warned: do not watch this show on an empty stomach.

The show was Bobby Flay's idea

The idea for Bobby and Giada in Italy was actually something Bobby Flay reportedly came up with all on his own, born out of his love for all things Italian. According to the  Food Network , he relocated to Rome a few years ago, and "he's been dreaming of going back ever since." And Flay knew right off the bat that he wanted Giada de Laurentiis to be a part of it. He explained to People ,  "We're friends, we obviously both love Italy, and we're both on the same network, so it made perfect sense."

But there's more to it than that. As  Bobby confesses in the show's intro, he has fallen in love with the lifestyle, culture, and food of Italy, "but to really understand a place, you need to see it with a local." De Laurentiis was born and partially raised in Rome, and still considers Italian to be her first language (via Food Network ). She is able to bring that perspective to all of their culinary adventures, along with helping Flay with his Italian vocabulary along the way. De Laurentiis also admits on the show that exploring Italy with Flay "opened my eyes to other things that I don't normally see."

Filming began in 2019, with the hosts documenting the fun on social media

Bobby and Giada in Italy premiered on Discovery+ on January 4, 2021, naturally raising a lot of questions about how this show was made in the midst of a global pandemic. Travel restrictions aside, there are no masks worn on the show and no social distancing. Some voiced their concerns on social media . However, there is an explanation for all of that.

Turns out, this show was filmed back in 2019, before any of us could have even imagined the coronavirus pandemic and the toll it would take on our travel plans and life in general. Both Flay and De Laurentiis shared Instagram posts and stories in September of 2019, documenting their travels and adventures while filming the show (via People ). In one Instagram post from De Laurentiis, the two hosts are seen smiling amidst a crew of producers, with the caption saying "Next stop... Tuscany!" In a post from Flay's account , the chef holds up an Italian soda and a porchetta sandwich on a busy Roman street, in a moment caught on camera by De Laurentiis. In another , Flay captures the serene dinner setting from their last night in Montalcino, which you'll recognize when you watch the last episode.

The chemistry between Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis is undeniable

You only need to watch a few minutes of Bobby & Giada in Italy to see that the two make the ideal hosting duo. This comes as no surprise to those who have been following the chefs during their Food Network careers. Bobby Flay and Giada de Laurentiis have been friends for years, and have worked together on other projects, from competing together on Iron Chef , to co-hosting Food Network Star . Their friendship exists on and off the camera, and there have been plenty of rumors over the years that there might actually be something more between the two.

Bobby and Giada in Italy doesn't do much to dispel the idea. The chemistry between Flay and De Laurentiis is readily apparent throughout the show. The two are constantly making quips, laughing, and dare we say, flirting, in every episode. De Laurentiis is even filmed feeding delicious Italian ingredients to Bobby, which feels very intimate. Even while in Rome, De Laurentiis goes shopping for a gift for Flay to remember the trip by. And don't just take our word for it. Viewers of the show have definitely picked up on the vibes between Flay and De Laurentiis, with one  Reddit user commenting, "They def look like a couple," adding, "I mean come on living it up in Italy... sipping on the best wines.. they've got some other buzz behind the scenes going on too I will put money on it."

Bobby and Giada enjoy some solo adventures on the show, too

While the show mostly features Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis exploring and indulging in the best of Italian cuisine together, the two aren't totally inseparable. Both Flay and De Laurentiis embark on some solo food fun while in Italy... all on film of course.

In the first episode, Flay takes advantage of De Laurentiis' early bird tendencies to enjoy a night out in Rome, wandering into some of his favorite late night pizza spots in the city, and making some new friends along the way. In episode two, Flay also ventures out to see how his favorite anchovy pasta is made, while De Laurentiis gets a crash course, and a taste test, in the art of tiramisu. The Italian chef also gets to spend some one-on-one time with her mom, Veronica De Laurentiis, who is an actress and an author.

Making the show was a mostly stress-free experience

Creating a television show — even one about the glorious foods and lifestyle of Italy — requires a whole lot of hard work behind the scenes. There's scouting, research, scripting, filming take after take... and all that before post-production starts. But, according to Bobby Flay, filming Bobby and Giada in Italy was actually a relaxing and enjoyable experience as far as television production can be. Flay recently told Delish ,  "it's almost like we were on some sort of extended vacation, but we're also working at the same time." Yep, that definitely sounds like a dream job. Even better if  you and your co-worker are besties ! Flay added that there's something about Italy that puts both he and Roman-native Giada De Laurentiis at ease, only adding to their natural on-camera rapport. "We were just in a great mood the entire time. We got along great. We always have a great time together."

A lot of gelato was consumed

Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis get their hands on all kinds of Italian treats throughout the episodes of Bobby and Giada in Italy  – from De Laurentiis' favorite pizza bianca, to mountains of fresh pasta, locally made cheese and wines, fresh fig salads, iconic porchetta sandwiches, and everything in between (truth: writing this sentence has made us very hungry). And one thing you'll see them eat a lot of along the way is gelato.

The Italian ice cream is a staple dessert, and it also happens to be one of Bobby Flay's favorite foods. He admitted to PopCulture.  that "anybody that works with me or knows me as a friend, knows that my serious weakness is gelato." And Flay takes it to a new level. "I will sit and make [a] gelato bar by myself and just spread out amazing flavors of gelato and sauces and different kinds of nuts, and that's my thing," the chef confessed.

There's a reason Bobby Flay wears a suit on the show

Running around the streets of Rome, getting hands on in the kitchen, and digging into delicious dishes are all on the agenda in Bobby and Giada in Italy . You'd think that would call for some casual (and probably stretchy) clothing. But not for Bobby Flay. In many scenes of him and Giada De Laurentiis exploring Rome, you'll catch Bobby in a suit or fancy blazer. It's a calculated outfit choice on his part. Flay was asked about it recently, and admitted "I have a suit on because when I go to a place like Rome, I want to be dressed like a local, so I don't feel like I'm just, you know, the next tourist" (via Delish ). It's apparently all part of a whole façade — as they say, when in Rome... Flay put it this way: "I put on a nice suit, and I walk around and go shopping — it just makes me feel like I'm kind of living life a little bit. It's almost like the movie of my life."

Flay and De Laurentiis' show is basically your food itinerary for your next trip to Italy

Before the premiere of Bobby and Giada in Italy , there were few details about the show's format and what viewers could expect. Would it be a cooking show, with the hosts whipping up a lot of Italian recipes? Would it be a restaurant tour of Rome and Tuscany, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives style? The truth is that it's actually a little bit of both, but the show leans heavily on featuring some of the best restaurants , chefs, and food producers that Italy has to offer.

Flay and De Laurentiis visit a variety of different spots and people along their journey, from chefs of fine dining cuisine, to the classic and laid back cafes that dot the streets of Rome, to hole-in-the-wall restaurants where every dish feels home-cooked. The pair also check out local farms and vineyards that look well worth a visit, if you're down to put on a beekeeper suit or milk a sheep to make pecorino. Our advice? Take some notes while watching Bobby and Giada in Italy , you've basically got yourself a full itinerary for your next trip to Rome or Tuscany.

“Bobby’s Triple Threat” has been renewed for a third season at Food Network .

Hosted by Bobby Flay and featuring his three culinary “titans” — Tiffany Derry, Michael Voltaggio and Brooke Williamson — the show sees the trio go up against a new guest chef and mystery judge each episode, with each titan being responsible for one of three courses in the successive cooking competition with a $25,000 weekly prize.

Popular on Variety

Season 3 of Flay’s “Triple Threat” competition series will air in 2024.

“’Bobby’s Triple Threat’ showcases a level of culinary skill and execution that elevates the action and allows Bobby to deliver to viewers a high-energy, high-stakes food competition,” Warner Bros. Discovery’s head of food content Betsy Ayala said. “With Bobby at the helm and his three hand-picked titans, Tiffany, Michael and Brooke, cooking weekly against a new elite opponent, the audience has no choice but to be on the edge of their seats to see how each battle unfolds.”

Flay added: “I am thrilled that viewers have voted a resounding ‘yes’ by tuning into Season 2 of Triple Threat with double digit gains over our first season. My goal of turning the Titans into cooking superheroes is becoming a reality, and I can’t wait to unleash the next set of challengers into the club for Season 3. I’ve got $25,000 burning a hole in my pocket, come and get it!”

“Bobby’s Triple Threat” hails from Rock Shrimp Productions.

Bobby Flay talks 'Triple Threat,' and how he 'handed' Guy Fieri a Food Network job

bobby flay travel show

NEW YORK – It seems there’s no beef ‒ but plenty of sweetness ‒ to go around between two of the most well-known Food Network personalities, Bobby Flay and Guy Fieri .

“I’m a huge fan of Guy’s,” chef Bobby Flay tells USA TODAY at the Food Network Test Kitchen earlier this month . Flay is promoting Season 2 of “Bobby’s Triple Threat” (Tuesday, 9 EDT/PDT, and streaming on Discovery+).

“He’s done an incredibly great job. Ironically, I actually handed Guy his job,” the Emmy winner says. Flay was a judge on Season 2 of “The Next Food Network Star” in 2006, which Fieri won. “To watch him climb the ranks and be so successful at what he does, it’s been really nice to see.”

On the latest season of “Triple Threat,” Flay once again enlists chefs Brooke Williamson, Tiffany Derry and Michael Voltaggio as his “titans.” All three battle one celebrity chef, with an expert as judge. In order for the visiting celebrity chef to win, they have to outscore the combined total of the three “titan-cooked” dishes.

Flay’s Rock Shrimp Productions is behind the show, and the chef, who started at Food Network in 1997, is signed with the cable outlet through 2024. If he extends, Flay could be looking at 30 years on the channel, which "has been my home for a really long time. The more people are interested in food, the more we can push the envelope with the network.”

Flay’s portfolio also includes “Beat Bobby Flay” and “BBQ Brawl.” But as he looks back on his time with the Food Network, it was his relationship with the audience that stands out.“One of the things I’m really proud about with this network is it’s one of the only networks where the hosts and chefs are on a first-name basis with the people,” he noted. “When I’m walking down the street people say, ‘Hey Bobby!’ Most of the time I think it’s a friend of mine, but a lot of time, it’s someone who watches the show, and they feel really comfortable about it, which is nice.”

Chef Christian Gill on competing on Food Network Shows ‘Beat Bobby Flay’ and ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’

Cincinnati -based chef Christian Gill has been taking on every challenge that the Food Network has to offer this summer. He is currently competing in Guy’s Grocery Games Summer Tournament and has moved on through two of the episodes winning best dish.

He also completed the nearly impossible task of beating Food Network legend Bobby Flay.

This isn’t Christian’s first appearance on Food Network. He has won Guy’s Grocery Games in the past. He was also crowned the champion on Food Network’s “Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge” winning the $25,000 grand prize.

Gill is the owner of my favorite Cincinnati area eatery  Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey  in Union, Kentucky.

Over the past few weeks, you have appeared on  Guys Grocery Games  and  Beat Bobby Flay.  Can you share some of the highlights of your experience on both shows on the Food Network?

Some of the highlights of my experience definitely would be like winning best dish overall on the first week of  the Grocery Games Summer Tournament  with my crunchy corn curry salad. Just coming out of the gate with something very simple. Everybody else on the episode made an entrée with a side.

They made something, much more complex than what I did. I think maybe Nina (Singto) with her cheese wontons, might have been the only other dish that wasn’t like a composed plate. And I just remember making it and standing up there waiting to be judged and the judge looking down at it like is this all that we’re getting from you? Like you’ve won this before and you present this, right out the gate?

Just the look of betrayal on Simon Mujumdar’s face as they placed that crock of corn salad in front of him -that was pretty priceless.

On  Beat Bobby Flay , probably the moment that I was facing off with him, about to tell him what my special dish was. And I said “Do you like biscuits?” and his eyes really did light up. He was like, “I love biscuits.” And then I said, “No, it’s not what we’re making.”

I would say that those are definitely the two highlights from the last week, two episodes.

bobby flay travel show

Well, the internet wants to know the crunchy corn curry salad recipe.

I’ve seen some of the requests for that salad recipe, so now I’m trying to get everything together to share it.

Honestly, you all would be better off making it from watching the episode than I would from memory. As soon as Guy [Fieri] says “Go,” your brain just kind of clicks over and you start competing. Competing has kind of become like a eat, sleep, breathe, sort of situation so it’s something that I don’t necessarily remember because I was just in the moment.

Why did you choose Banh Mi as your signature dish on  Beat Bobby Flay ?

I wanted to show my love of all things Asian food, but then also my ability to step outside of the box of biscuits and gravy.

A lot of people just know me for biscuits and don’t know me for anything else. I mean Boomtown is a biscuit-focused restaurant and they haven’t seen or been able to try anything else that I’ve created.

I wanted to showcase some of my other strengths in terms of flavor, composition and execution. Banh Mi is one of my favorite sandwiches and there is a lot of flexibility with it. The time of the biscuit has not gone away, but it’s time to start raising up some other fun foods.

I’m glad I did choose it because clearly, Bobby has not made many Banh Mi’s in his life

I watch the show religiously it’s really hard to beat him, o congratulations.

Are you still doing the online YouTube food series “Sh!t in the Fridge?”

Unfortunately, no, I’m not. I’ve been busy with some new content that’s coming out shortly that I can’t talk about yet, some more shows actually.

So, I haven’t been able to focus on “Shit in the Fridge” It was pretty cool and it seemed like people liked it as we filmed it during the pandemic.

In the future I might do, like a supper club “ Sh!t in the Fridge ” pop-up. I think that would be a lot of fun.

Do you think doing the Youtube series helped prepare you for the Food Network shows?

bobby flay travel show

I think it’s the opposite way around. I think all of my experience that I now have on Food Network and has really prepared me to be able to create cool content for YouTube and Facebook.

I’ve been competing for about five and a half years now, whether that’s filming pilots and conceptual stuff that has made the air or if it’s filming international food shows like “Fire Masters” for Food Network Canada.

While you were filming the TV Shows did you get to do any sightseeing on the East and West Coasts?

For the most part, I just worked while filming  Guy’s Grocery Games . You film in Northern California and it is outside of the city so it’s a journey to visit other areas.

I filmed Beat Bobby Flay in New York City. Every single time I’m in New York City, I’m eating something cool. I like to try a brand-new restaurant that I’ve never been to.

What did you try this time around?

The most recent thing was actually it was my first experience with  Second Avenue Deli . It’s one of the top Jewish delis in NYC. It was a glorious experience. Some of the best Matzoh Ball Soup I’ve ever had and one of the best pastrami sandwiches I’ve ever had too.

Also definitely check out  Han Dynasty  near Alphabet City in NYC It was another restaurant I found just wandering in the streets with some of my friends.

It was also quite life-changing in terms of traditional fish and traditional Chinese food, not just the typical General Tso’s chicken. Special things like marinated cucumbers and chilies and an amazing lamb dish that is hot enough and spicy enough to melt your face off.

Food Network fans slam Beat Bobby Flay’s ‘horrible judges’ as ‘chef always wins’ despite ‘not having authentic’ dishes

CELEBRITY chef Bobby Flay has been flayed by fans, who say they can't stand the judges on his Beat Bobby Flay game show.

The Food Network star challenges fellow chefs to a cook-off on the competition show.

Bobby Flay hosts and takes part in his own Food Network game show

The program culminates in a one-on-one contest between Bobby and a chef, where each are judged on one final meal.

The challenger is said to have the advantage by being able to choose the dish both have to make.

Bobby, 59, is not told what he will be cooking until the race begins.

A panel of judges then determines the winner through a blind taste test.

JUDGING THE JUDGES

But the judges have been accused lately of having bad taste.

Fans came together in a Reddit chat room to share their grievances over a recent episode.

"Bobby puts in all kinds of weird ingredients that are not even traditional and wins," the post author wrote.

"Bobby wins even though his dish is not authentic, which I find to be complete BS!! The judges on that show are horrible imo."

The opinion was shared by others.

"Until the judges are specifically asked to judge on authenticity, Bobby Flay will always have an advantage, because clearly, judging is based on flavor, NOT authenticity," one person railed.

"How can someone complain about 'too spicy' for Szechuan?" another asked about a recent review. "The 'judges' end up being diners who favor Bobby 90% of the time."

While one person flatly stated about Bobby, " I’m glad to see him lose, when he does."

One dish Bobby's fan have raved about is his current girlfriend, Christina Perez.

How can someone complain about 'too spicy' for Szechuan?"

In August 2022, Bobby opened up to  ET's  Rachel Smith about their relationship.

I'm a very, very lucky person," Bobby said.

"Christina, she's just a light in my life. She's so sweet. She's so smart. She just enhances everything that I'm able to participate in with her. I mean, she's fantastic."

"For now, I like it exactly the way it is. I think Christina does too," said Bobby when asked about marriage.

The Sun exclusively revealed in 2021 that Christina is a writer.

She has an impressive resume, as her writing has been featured in Vogue, Condé Nast Traveler, GQ, Elle, Glamour, InStyle, Refinery29, Harper's Bazaar and more.

The Funky Cheese Bobby Flay Tops His Steaks With

F ew people know their way around a steak like Bobby Flay does. Since the world-renowned chef began hosting his first grilling show on the Food Network in 1996, he has dedicated a good chunk of his career to delivering straightforward tips that guarantee juicy steaks every time. While most of his fans know him for his fairly simple, traditional recipes, Flay does like to experiment with bold flavors. In fact, one of his most unique pairings for steak might just be blue cheese.

While the mold strains in these cheeses are indeed safe to eat , some just can't get behind their pungent flavor and strong aroma — but Flay believes it truly goes great with a beefy steak. The creamy cheese, with its deep savory notes, makes a fatty cut like ribeye even richer, while also balancing out the meat with some sharpness. You also don't need a ton of the cheese, in case you want to start off slow.

Sometimes, Flay likes to mix blue cheese with some butter and thyme to create a creamy, savory spread, which he then dollops directly onto a steak after plating. Other times, he simply garnishes the beef with a crumble of cheese and drenches it in leftover browned butter from his skillet. The chef likes to add this ingredient to both grilled and pan-seared steaks, so don't feel afraid to try it with your favorite recipe.

Pick The Right Kind Of Blue Cheese For Your Steak

Not all blue cheeses will affect the flavor of your food in the exact same way. Some styles of this funky ingredient, such as Roquefort, feature a brittle, feta-like consistency. On the other hand, variants like Cambozola have a softer, buttery texture. The term "blue cheese" actually refers to a large number of cheeses that vary in taste, feel, and even appearance.

In the context of Bobby Flay's steak recipes, this means that you'll need to select the variant that best matches the texture of the dish's garnish. For example, a creamy Stilton can pair excellently with the thyme butter spread the professional chef uses for grilled filet mignon, but a crumbly Maytag might just result in a lumpy dressing. Meanwhile, you're likely going to have a hard time trying to grate the smooth Gorgonzola into sliced steak, as its texture is just not dry enough.

You should also keep in mind the intensity of your blue cheese — especially if you're serving it to a large crowd of people. Variants like Maytag have potent smells and flavors that can turn off a lot of appetites, so you might want to select a milder kind (such as Danish Blue) to accommodate certain guests. In most cases, cheeses with lots of blue marbling or powerful smells typically have a more pungent taste. There are exceptions, so sample a few to see which fits your needs the best.

Other Steak Garnishes And Tips From Bobby Flay

Blue cheeses aren't the only unusual ingredient Bobby Flay likes to add to his beef. For New York strip steak, the famous chef creates a mint-horseradish dressing, which adds a cool, spicy kick to the meat. For even stronger heat, he has also drenched skirt cuts with a jalapeño pesto sauce — a peppery twist on the classic Italian condiment. If you prefer something a bit sweeter, Flay likes to reach for gochujang as a steak glaze . All these sauces are enough to mix up the flavor of a filet mignon on their own, but you're also welcome to add some blue cheese crumbles if you'd like to introduce more complexity to your food.

If you want an even more flavorful steak, Flay always tells home cooks to never hold back on the temperature. High heat ensures that your beef cuts achieve that crunchy exterior that most people yearn for, and delivers nice textural contrast to the overall dish. Flay also admitted that he prefers his meat cooked medium due to the resulting juiciness, so keep that in mind next time you follow his blue cheese steak recipe.
