Dubai visas - Guide

Here’s everything you need to know about Dubai visas

  • Individual Visas in Dubai
  • Business and Investor Visas in Dubai

As well-known global trade hubs and popular tourist destinations, Dubai and other parts of the UAE receive a huge number of visa applications from visitors, new employees and business travellers. The government grants several different types of entry permits and visas based on the purpose of your stay. The most common types of Dubai visas include tourist visas, transit visas, residence visas and business visas. Read on as we delve into all the essential Dubai visa information you could ever need.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DUBAI VISAS

Anyone who wants to visit the city can apply for one of the following Dubai visas, depending on the purpose of their visit.

DUBAI TOURIST VISA

The tourist visa allows people from all around the world to visit Dubai for a 30 to 180-day duration . These visits could be for tourism , leisure or business .

Dubai tourist visas are valid for single entry or multiple entries , depending on the application. The tourist visa is for those not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE.

To apply for a Dubai tourist visa , one must be 18 or above . Female travellers under 18 are not eligible for a tourist visa in Dubai unless their parents or legal guardians accompany them. The cost of tourist visas ranges from AED 250 to AED 1,740 .

You don’t need a sponsor for a multi-entry tourist visa and the duration can be a maximum of 180 days. A bank statement with a minimum $4,000 balance would be necessary for this visa.

Earlier, the UAE government allowed a 10-day grace period before imposing an AED 50 per day fine. However, that relaxation has been removed and the fine is now imposed right after your visa expires.

DUBAI TRANSIT VISA

This visa is perfect for travellers with long stopovers at the Dubai International Airport. Visitors who do not qualify for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry can apply for a UAE transit visa . The transit visa is issued for either 48 hours or 96 hours . Once issued, you cannot extend the 48-hour transit visa to a 96-hour.

While the 48-hour Dubai transit visa is free , the 96-hour transit visa costs AED 50 . You must have the following documents to apply for a transit visa:

Dubai is a thriving city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Its big scale development and attractions for all age groups have made Dubai a major tourist and business attraction. Say you will be visiting Dubai. How do you get a tourist visa to Dubai? Depending on your nationality, it can be a simple process.

Figuring Out the Rules

Step 1 Determine the rules for your specific country.

  • Citizens of the United States and all EU member states qualify for free visit visas at United Arab Emirates airports or other points of entry. They last for 30 days. That means you don’t need to get a visa in advance of arriving in Dubai.
  • If you are a citizen of a Gulf Cooperation Council country, you don’t need a visa at all and could also qualify for a visa for domestic help. GCC countries are countries along the Arabian peninsula. These countries include: Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia.
  • If you are from a country not on that list of 33 and aren't from a GCC country, you may still get a day tourist visa, depending on the country you are from, but it needs to be sponsored by a local entity, like a hotel or a tour operator, and you should get the visa before entering Dubai. Check with your embassy before traveling to Dubai because the list of countries not requiring a pre-visa or sponsor can change.

Step 2 Determine the type of visa you need if you don’t qualify for the free visit visa.

  • Valid sponsors include hotel and tourist companies, airlines and airline handlers, organizations based in the United Arab Emirates, and some individuals who already live there.
  • You will need to choose the type of visa. Possibilities include a tourist visa that is valid for 30 days, a service visa valid for 14 days or a visit visa, which is valid for 30 days and can be extended for another 30.
  • Airlines and airline handlers can qualify for a 96-hour transit visa.

Obtaining a Visa if you are a U.S. Citizen

Step 1 Get a 30-day visa as an American citizen.

  • Your passport must be valid for more than six months, so make sure it's not about to expire. As noted, you do not need to obtain a visa prior to entry to the UAE if you will be staying in Dubai for less than one month. Proceed directly to customs check, and you will be instructed on how to get your visa. You will need your U.S. passport.
  • This includes U.S citizens who have visas or entry stamps from other countries in their passports. You will need a confirmed round trip airline ticket and an original passport signed by the bearer that should not expire within six months of the time you expect to arrive in Dubai.
  • The visas are available when you arrive at the airport. If you are going to stay longer than one month, you could just ask for an extension from the immigration office in the UAE.

Step 2 Obtain a diplomatic or official visa.

  • You need the original passport signed by the bearer, and it should not expire within 6 months of your arrival.
  • You will need a copy of the passport and application, two original passport-sized photos, and an original letter from the U.S. Department you are representing that lists your position, purpose of your visit, name and phone number of your contact person in UAE and a confirmation of your sponsor.

Getting a Visa for More Frequent Entry or Longer Trips

Step 1 Figure out if you need a multiple-entry visa.

  • You must enter the UAE first on a visit visa. Obtain the multiple-entry visa while in the country. The visa will be stamped in your passport.
  • Citizens of the United States and all EU member states qualify for free visit visas at United Arab Emirates airports or other points of entry.
  • U.S. citizens can apply to the UAE embassy in the United States to obtain one to 10-year multiple entry visas. This requires a sponsor. The visa is free. Tourists and business people using this visa should not stay longer than six months for each visit. German citizens can apply to the UAE embassy in Germany but only qualify for 1 to 2 year multiple entry visas. They don’t need a sponsor. They can’t stay longer than three months per year and must pay a visa fee.

Step 2 Obtain a transit visa.

  • You must present passport and travel documents. If you are from Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Niger, or Yemen, you don’t qualify for a transit visa.
  • Airlines often arrange these transit visas for their passengers.

Step 3 Obtain a student visa.

  • You will need to submit a clear passport copy of the sponsor, a copy of the establishment card, copy of the trade license, and travel insurance. There are fees associated with student visas
  • You will also need to provide a clear personal photo of the sponsored person and authorized signatures.

Step 4 Obtain a medical treatment visa.

  • Medical visas last 60 days and can be renewed twice for 60-day periods. You will need a clear passport copy of the sponsor, a copy of the establishment card, a medical certificate attested by the Health Authority or MOH, and travel insurance.
  • You will also need a clear personal photo of the sponsored person.

Step 5 Obtain a visa for a conference, festival or exhibition.

  • You will need a passport of the sponsor, copy of the establishment card, copy of the trade license, a letter from the concerned entity announcing the event, and travel insurance.
  • Such visas last for 30 or 60 days and can’t be renewed.

Can I enter Dubai with a one-way ticket on a tourist visa?

If you are planning to visit Dubai on a tourist visa, it is important to understand the entry requirements and necessary documentation. One common question that arises is whether it is possible to enter Dubai with a one-way ticket on a tourist visa.

While it is generally recommended to have a round-trip ticket when traveling on a tourist visa, Dubai does allow entry with a one-way ticket under certain conditions. The decision ultimately lies with the immigration officers at the point of entry, and they may ask for additional documentation or proof of onward travel.

To increase your chances of entering Dubai with a one-way ticket, here are a few tips:

  • Show proof of accommodation: Having a confirmed hotel reservation for your stay in Dubai can demonstrate that you have a planned itinerary and a place to stay during your visit.
  • Show proof of sufficient funds: It is important to have enough money to cover your expenses during your stay in Dubai. This can be in the form of bank statements or credit card statements.
  • Show proof of return or onward travel: Even though you have a one-way ticket, it is advisable to have proof of your onward travel plans. This can be in the form of a confirmed flight ticket to your next destination or a visa for your next country of visit.

By providing these documents and demonstrating your intention to comply with the visa requirements, you increase your chances of being allowed entry into Dubai with a one-way ticket. However, it is important to note that the final decision lies with the immigration officers, and they may still request additional documentation or deny entry.

In conclusion, while it is possible to enter Dubai with a one-way ticket on a tourist visa, it is advisable to have a round-trip ticket and necessary documentation to avoid any complications or potential issues at the point of entry.

Are you a student who recently graduated from the UAE and is looking to sponsor your visa based on your academics? The Golden Visa issued by UAE is a long-term, renewable residence visa that enables you to stay in the country for a duration of 5 or 10 years, depending on the application category.

Students or graduates who excel in academics can apply for this visa. Khaleej Times spoke to an Amer agent to outline the application process for applicants in the UAE.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Am I eligible?

Applicants must apply for the Golden visa within the same emirate where their current visa was issued.

University graduates

Outstanding graduates of universities in the UAE

According to the UAE’s government portal, students of universities in the UAE may be granted a Golden visa for a period of 10 years, if:

  • It has not been more than 2 years since graduation
  • The university must be rated either A or B class by Ministry of Education
  • A recommendation letter from the university or an accredited graduation certificate or an accredited academic record stating that the student’s cumulative GPA (CGPA) is no less than 3.5 for class A universities and no less than 3.8 for class B universities is submitted.

Outstanding graduates of foreign universities

According to the UAE’s government portal, students in foreign universities may be granted a Golden visa for a period of 10 years, if:

  • Graduation certificate is accredited by the Ministry of Education
  • The university is rated among the best 100 universities global according to the rating system recognized by Ministry of Education
  • The student’s cumulative GPA is not less than 3.5

High school students

High school students are eligible for a Golden Visa of 5 years, if:

  • The student is a national-level topper (with a minimum grade of 95 per cent in public or private secondary school)
  • A recommendation letter from Ministry of Education (Emirates Schools Establishment) is submitted.

The Golden Visa is for a duration of 5 years, but may be extended if the student is enrolled in one of the majors or colleges in the country that requires a study period of more than 5 years.

How do I know if my university is rated A or B?

To know the university's classification, the applicant can access the university website, or contact their admin department.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, a Technical Support Specialist at Amer247 messaging platform said:

However, for applications through Amer, the classification is "specifically contingent upon the governing authority under which the educational institution" is based.

This classification can significantly influence the documents required.

The support specialist added: "Notably, for outstanding university students under KHDA, the school must liaise with KHDA for certificate attestation, followed by MOFA attestation, and the issuance of an equivalency certificate to conform with the mandatory Ministerial grading system, typically graded out of 4 or 5."

How do I apply?

Students can expect a faster process if they first receive ICP nomination approval and then visit an Amer centre. According to the Amer agent, the application process can indeed be "expedited and made more efficient" if the student obtains a UAE ICP nomination approval prior to visiting Amer, or utilises the GDRFA platform.

The agent said that the GPA threshold is set at 3.8 to "facilitate a seamless application process." However, certain universities in the UAE are categorized by ICP as exempt from the 3.8 benchmark.

Graduates from these universities can apply for the Golden visa with a GPA of 3.5 if they secure a nomination from ICP, he added.

To apply for a Golden Visa in Dubai, visit icp.com

  • On the homepage, stay logged out. Scroll until you see the left side menu, and click on “Golden Visa” under Services.
  • Click on “start service” under “high school students/college students”
  • Then, go to “Visa – Golden Residence – Nomination Request for Golden Residence – New Request” and click on “Start Service”
  • Fill in the application form, attach the required documents and pay the application fees.
  • Once you receive ICP approval for the nomination request, take a screenshot of the approval email and head to your nearest Amer service centre, with the required documents. Alternatively, you can apply through the GDRFA website, smart application or Customer Happiness Centres.

According to Amer's technical support specialist, students holding the Golden Visa can "extend the visa to their parents, spouses, and children without any prejudice."
