Videos by American Songwriter

Returning to the Beacon Theatre, where the tour kicked off in November 2022, the Stories of Surrender residency will start on April 16 and run through May 3 and is centered around the U2 frontman’s memoir.

Centered around stories in his book, the show is one part theatrical performance and the other a rock concert with Bono balancing memories and anecdotes with musical interludes.

For his performances, Bono will be joined by musicians Gemma Doherty on harp, keyboard, and vocals, Kate Ellis on cello, keyboard, and vocals, along with musical director Jacknife Lee.

The book follows the earlier days of the singer, born Paul David Hewson, from growing up in Dublin, the loss of his mother at 14, and finding his future bandmates The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton at school in 1978. Surrender also explores Bono’s philanthropic work and activism linked to helping to fight poverty and combatting AIDS, along with stories of the people who impacted his life.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs, the people, places, and possibilities in my life,” said Bono in an earlier statement in his memoir. ‘Surrender’ is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book.”

He added, “I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. ‘Surrender’ is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress…with a fair amount of fun along the way.”

Bono Announces 14-Date Solo Concert Tour to Promote 'Surrender' Memoir: 'I Miss Being Onstage'

The tour, which kicks off at New York's Beacon Theatre on Nov. 2, coincides with the release of the U2 rocker's new memoir

Bono is going on tour!

Earlier this week, the U2 frontman, 62, announced a series of solo shows in support of his forthcoming memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story , which is due out Nov. 1.

"I miss being onstage and the closeness of U2's audience," Bono said in a press release. "In these shows, I've got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell... Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender , which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here."

The tour kicks off at New York City's Beacon Theatre on Nov. 2, and Bono will make stops in cities including Chicago and Los Angeles before heading overseas for shows in Europe and wrapping the run in Madrid on Nov. 28.

Published by Alfred A. Knopf, the book — named after a track on U2's 1983 album War — comprises 40 different chapters, each named after a U2 song and featuring original drawings by the Irish rocker.

Surrender chronicles Bono's Dublin childhood, including the loss of his mother at 14, U2's rise to fame, and his activism in the fight against HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty with "candor, self-reflection and humor," according to a press release.

"When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs," Bono said in a statement. "The people, places and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me."

He continued at the time, "Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim's lack of progress . . . With a fair amount of fun along the way."

Bono will also narrate an audiobook through Penguin Random House.

In May, an animated video with an excerpt from the chapter titled "Out of Control" was released. The video featured some of the star's drawings which documented the story of Bono writing U2's first single on his 18th birthday in 1978.

Tickets, which will include a copy of the book, are on sale now. More information is available at the Surrender website .

Bono Launches ‘Stories of Surrender’ Book Tour in New York City

Bono launched his Stories of Surrender book tour this evening in New York City, in support of his new memoir,  Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story .

The U2 singer appeared on stage at the Beacon Theatre to rapturous applause before launching into a condensed version of "City of Blinding Lights," backed by a trio of musicians.

"It is preposterous to think that others are interested in your story...this has all been a bit surreal," Bono said, adding that he found it a bit strange to be performing without his U2 bandmates. "I have their permission," he assured.

Notable attendees included U2 guitarist the Edge , former president Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton.

The book – Bono's first – covers nearly every aspect of his life and career, beginning with his childhood in Dublin, through the formation and global success of U2, as well as the band's ongoing philanthropic work. It is loosely organized around 40 of U2's songs, including hits like "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "One" and "Beautiful Day."

"When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd previously only sketched in songs," he said in an earlier press release. "The people, places and possibilities in my life."

Bono's performance – a half stage play, half musical show that included readings from the book, stripped down renditions of songs and projected illustrations drawn by the singer himself — began with his 2016 heart surgery that took place in New York City, an anecdote to emphasize his literal and metaphoric "eccentric heart."

The show then worked its way chronologically, starting with the death of his mother at age 14 and the beginning of his lifelong struggle to earn his father's approval. "I tried to impress him," Bono said as he sat in a chair next to an empty one, recreating conversations he had with his father over the years. He joked that there are two methods for encouraging a child to become a global rock star. One is the "Italian method," in which parents shower praise on their son or daughter, the other is to ignore them entirely, the "Irish method."

Thanks to his older brother, Bono found inspiration in the music of the Ramones , who wrote "songs so simple even I might be able to write [them.]" Eventually, the singer met his future U2 bandmates. In recalling his first impressions of each member, Bono described the Edge as "this boy who would buy a guitar the same shape as his head" and bassist Adam Clayton as "a sort of posh Sid Vicious ." The origins of various U2 hits were briefly described, like "I Will Follow" ("the song that will save my fucking life"), and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" ("not just a song; a map, a way forward in the world").

"This is my story," Bono said at one point, "and I'm stuck with it."

At the beginning of Bono's performance, he said that his memoir was, in many ways, "the story of how [his wife] Alison Stewart saved me from myself." The couple has been married for 40 years, and they met the same week that U2 had their first band rehearsal. "I'm still a boy," he said toward the end of the show, "but I'm more of a man because of this woman." He also thanked the audience, both the one sitting before him in New York City and the rest of his fans around the world, for supporting U2 over the years. "You  can  have fun  and  change the world," he said.

At the conclusion of the show, Bono emphasized his belief in the United States. "We all need America to work," he said. "America is a song yet to be finished...a song still being written."

The book tour, which is now sold out, will continue through various major U.S. cities before heading overseas for a string of dates in the U.K. and Europe.

Bono will make you sing, laugh and cry at Stories of Surrender limited engagement

bono new york book tour

NEW YORK – Bono stands alone in a spotlight with no accompaniment, liberating the 19th century Italian song "Torna a Surriento" from his insides.

His voice a beautiful rumble, the frontman for U2 unleashes the pain, glory, sorrow and joy he’s shared the past two hours through story and song.

Leading up to that stunning culmination – an ode to his late father , Brendan Hewson – you’ve felt the bruises on his heart. But with this finale, Bono will take whatever is left of your own heart and break it.

In October, the loquacious singer-writer-activist released his memoir, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.” A few weeks later, he embarked on a 14-city international tour to present passages from the book threaded with reframed versions of several U2 songs.

Bono at the Beacon Theatre in New York

Now, Bono is back for a spring run, taking place only at the Beacon Theatre in New York, with shows Friday and Saturday as well as seven scattered dates through May 8. Though tickets sold out instantly, production holds have just been released via ticketmaster.com for the May 4, 7 and 8 shows.

At the first of his return dates on Sunday, Bono joked about his U2 comrades continuing to indulge this solo detour. “I told the band it was one night only,” he said with a mischievous grin.

A relaxed storyteller with a flair for theatrical flourishes – he did lead U2 through tours adorned with space stations and massive mirror ball lemons, after all – Bono also proved a sincere, reflective host.

And, of course, a commanding singer.

Bono gets a musical boost even without U2

Backed only by musicians Gemma Doherty (harp, keyboard, vocals), Kate Ellis (cello, keyboard, vocals) and producer Jacknife Lee (musical director, electronic percussion), Bono studded the show with 17 U2 songs, opening with the band’s love letter to New York, “City of Blinding Lights” (“Lucky we, lucky me,” he improvised at the end of the gliding anthem).

The selections from U2’s 40-plus-year catalog correlated to a story shared from the book:

  • “With Or Without You” was woven into the origin tale of meeting wife Ali (who was present at Sunday’s show) the same week as U2 bandmates Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton and the Edge .
  • “Out of Control,” the first song Bono said he wrote after being musically schooled by The Ramones (his saviors after the death of his mother, Iris, when he was 14).
  • “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” an Edge creation so defiant on record that Bono turned haunting and hushed.
  • “Beautiful Day,” shared after the tender recounting of the last moments with his father, his “Da,” in 2001.

Through them all, Bono’s voice soared with few accoutrements, the elegant stringed instruments and electronic pulse an undercurrent, but not the drivers of these malleable classics.

The production is magical, intimate and unforgettable. And best of all, these shows come with a no-devices-allowed mandate (phones will be stored in Yondr bags on the way in), allowing fans to commit special moments to memory, uninterrupted by filming, texting and views impeded by self-involved boors.

What does Bono talk about in his Surrender shows?

In his black outfit, pinstriped vest and trademark shaded glasses, Bono alternately stalked the stage, sipped from a pint of Guinness, pointed at his sketches illuminated on the screens behind him, and sat in a chair to recount conversations between himself and his father.

The topic of Luciano Pavarotti – a favorite of his Da, a tenor singer with a love of classical music – ran throughout the show. Bono frequently imparted how his father could never understand why a legendary opera singer would want to work with his son (Bono and the Edge performed at the 1995 Pavarotti & Friends concert).

Bono can captivate with a soliloquy about air (the story of the heart defect that almost killed him in 2016), prompt easy laughter with the recollection of his Da – no fan of the royal family – being immediately disarmed when meeting Princess Diana ("800 years of oppression, forgotten about in eight seconds," Bono quipped), and break into amusingly accurate impersonations of his bandmates and former President Bill Clinton (Bono worked with many a politician in philanthropic efforts such as the One Campaign).

Bono is both professor and maestro of this production, handling both roles with skillful ease.

What is next for U2?

It’s already been a visible several months for U2. The band received a Kennedy Center Honor in December, while “Songs of Surrender,” their collection of 40 rerecorded catalog gems arrived in March, as did a Disney+ documentary spotlighting Bono, the Edge, David Letterman and Dublin.

In September, the band will open the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas (sans Mullen Jr., who is sidelined by recovery from surgery) with a high-tech extravaganza dubbed U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere (dates will be announced soon).

No doubt, the enduring success of U2 can be attributed to their close-knit democracy and brotherhood. As Bono underscores in his show, “It turns out maybe you can change the world and have fun”– a credo both he and U2 have turned into an art.

NEW YORK (AP) — Bono opened his book tour Wednesday night in what he called a “transgressive” mood, a little bit guilty for appearing on stage with three musicians who were not his fellow members of U2 and otherwise singing, joking and shouting out his life story to thousands of adoring fans at Manhattan’s Beacon Theatre.

He even performed one song in Italian, a flawlessly operatic take of “Torna a Surriento.”

“This is all a little surreal,” he noted at one point. “But it seems to be going well.”

The 62-year-old singer, songwriter and humanitarian described himself as an eternal boy (born Paul David Hewson) with his fists “in the air,” a “grandstanding” rock star and a baritone trying to be a tenor. He is now a published and best-selling author, his “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” out this week and already in the top 10 on Amazon.com.

Through “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and other U2 classics, he traces his biography from his stifling childhood home in Dublin and the grief over the early death of his mother Iris Hewson to the formation of the band that made him a global celebrity and his enduring marriage to Alison Stewart.

Former President Bill Clinton , Tom Hanks and U2 guitarist The Edge were among his famous admirers in the audience, which often stood and cheered and sang along. For the 90-minute plus “Stories of Surrender” show, billed as “an evening of words, music, and some mischief,” Bono wore a plain black blazer, matching pants and added color with his orange-tinted glasses. He opened with an account from his book of his heart surgery in 2016, but otherwise pranced and leapt like a man who had never seen the inside of a hospital and belted out songs written decades ago without any sense he had forgotten what inspired them.

Ticket prices for the sold out show reached rock star levels as some web sites offered scalped seats for $2,000 and higher. Compared to a U2 show, the setting was relatively intimate — handwritten illustrations on screens hanging toward the back of the stage and a few tables and chairs that Bono used as props to climb on or to simulate conversations. With warm and comic mimicry, he recalled phone calls with Luciano Pavarotti and his pleas of “Bono, Bono, Bono” as the opera star recruited him to perform at a benefit show in Modena, Italy, and once turned up at U2’s studio on short notice — with a film crew.

Bono also re-enacted his many tense bar room meetings with his father, who seemed to regard his son’s career as some kind of failed business venture. Brendan Robert Hewson’s rough facade did collapse once, unexpectedly — when he met Princess Diana , an encounter Bono described as like watching centuries of Irish loathing of the royals “gone in eight seconds.”

“One princess, and we’re even,” Bono added.

He spoke often of loss, of his mother when he was a teenager and of his father in 2001. But he also described his life as a story of presence, whether of his religious faith, his wife and children, or of his bandmates. After what he called the characteristic Irish response to a child’s outsized ambitions — to pretend they don’t exist — he called himself “blessed,” and added that “what was silence has been filled, mostly, with music.”

Bono speaks

Bono is making a return to stages with a very different kind of show this year as he visits venues across the country to talk about his brand new memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs One Story. Billed as an evening of words, music and some mischief expect to find the iconic rock star and activist in a candid mood as he details his life, his loves and those who have inspired and shaped him.

With each chapter named after one of his songs and with original illustrations by Bono himself Surrender tells of Bono's journey from Dublin and the loss of his mother to stadium superstardom. This is a MUST for U2 fans!

Taylor Swift’s ‘Poets’ Arrives With a Promotional Blitz (and a Second LP)

The pop superstar’s latest album was preceded by a satellite radio channel, a word game, a return to TikTok and an actual library. For her fans, more is always welcome.

  • Share full article

The album cover for Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department,” which depicts the star lying on pillows in sleepwear, draping her arms over her body.

By Ben Sisario

Taylor Swift was already the most ubiquitous pop star in the galaxy, her presence dominating the music charts, the concert calendar, the Super Bowl, the Grammys.

Then it came time for her to promote a new album.

In the days leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, Swift became all but inescapable, online and seemingly everywhere else. Her lyrics were the basis for an Apple Music word game . A Spotify-sponsored, Swift-branded “ library installation ,” in muted pink and gray, popped up in a shopping complex in Los Angeles. In Chicago, a QR code painted on a brick wall directed fans to another Easter egg on YouTube. Videos on Swift’s social media accounts, showing antique typewriters and globes with pins, were dissected for clues about her music. SiriusXM added a Swift radio station; of course it’s called Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version).

About the only thing Swift didn’t do was an interview with a journalist.

At this stage in Swift’s career, an album release is more than just a moment to sell music; it’s all but a given that “The Tortured Poets Department” will open with gigantic sales numbers, many of them for “ghost white,” “phantom clear” and other collector-ready vinyl variants . More than that, the album’s arrival is a test of the celebrity-industrial complex overall, with tech platforms and media outlets racing to capture whatever piece of the fan frenzy they can get.

Threads, the newish social media platform from Meta, primed Swifties for their idol’s arrival there, and offered fans who shared Swift’s first Threads post a custom badge. Swift stunned the music industry last week by breaking ranks with her record label, Universal, and returning her music to TikTok, which Universal and other industry groups have said pays far too little in royalties. Overnight, TikTok unveiled “The Ultimate Taylor Swift In-App Experience,” offering fans digital goodies like a “Tortured Poets-inspired animation” on their feed.

Before the album’s release on Friday, Swift revealed that a music video — for “Fortnight,” the first single, featuring Post Malone — would arrive on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. At 2 a.m., she had another surprise: 15 more songs. “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you,” she wrote in a social media post , bringing “The Anthology” edition of the album to 31 tracks.

“The Tortured Poets Department,” which Swift, 34, announced in a Grammy acceptance speech in February — she had the Instagram post ready to go — lands as Swift’s profile continues to rise to ever-higher levels of cultural saturation.

Her Eras Tour , begun last year, has been a global phenomenon, crashing Ticketmaster and lifting local economies ; by some estimates, it might bring in as much as $2 billion in ticket sales — by far a new record — before it ends later this year. Swift’s romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been breathlessly tracked from its first flirtations last summer to their smooch on the Super Bowl field in February. The mere thought that Swift might endorse a presidential candidate this year sent conspiracy-minded politicos reeling .

“The Tortured Poets Department” — don’t even ask about the missing apostrophe — arrived accompanied by a poem written by Stevie Nicks that begins, “He was in love with her/Or at least she thought so.” That establishes what many fans correctly anticipated as the album’s theme of heartbreak and relationship rot, Swift’s signature topic. “I love you/It’s ruining my life,” she sings on “Fortnight.”

Fans were especially primed for the fifth track, “So Long, London,” given that (1) Swift has said she often sequences her most vulnerable and emotionally intense songs fifth on an LP, and (2) the title suggested it may be about Joe Alwyn, the English actor who was Swift’s boyfriend for about six years, reportedly until early 2023 . Indeed, “So Long” is an epic breakup tune, with lines like “You left me at the house by the heath” and “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” Tracks from the album leaked on Wednesday, and fans have also interpreted some songs as being about Matty Healy , the frontman of the band the 1975, whom Swift was briefly linked to last year.

The album’s title song starts with a classic Swift detail of a memento from a lost love: “You left your typewriter at my apartment/Straight from the tortured poets department.” It also name-drops Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith and, somewhat surprisingly given that company, Charlie Puth, the singer-songwriter who crooned the hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a No. 1 hit in 2015. (Swift has praised Wiz Khalifa and that song in the past.)

Other big moments include “Florida!!!,” featuring Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, in which Swift declares — after seven big percussive bangs — that the state “is one hell of a drug.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, the producers and songwriters who have been Swift’s primary collaborators in recent years, both worked on “Tortured Poets,” bringing their signature mix of moody, pulsating electronic tracks and delicate acoustic moments, like a bare piano on “Loml” (as in “love of my life”).

As the ninth LP Swift has released in five years, “Tortured Poets” is the latest entry in a remarkable creative streak. That includes five new studio albums and four rerecordings of her old music — each of which sailed to No. 1. When Swift played SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in August, she spoke from the stage about her recording spurt, saying that the forced break from touring during the Covid-19 pandemic had spurred her to connect with fans by releasing more music.

“And so I decided, in order to keep that connection going,” she said , “if I couldn’t play live shows with you, I was going to make and release as many albums as humanly possible.”

That was two albums ago.

Ben Sisario covers the music industry. He has been writing for The Times since 1998. More about Ben Sisario

Mets at Giants picks and predictions

Mets 5, Giants 4

The  METS ( -105 ) have not lost back-to-back outings since they opened the season on a 5-game skid from March 29-April 4. Since then, they’re 12-4 overall and 5-3 as underdogs. Quintana has also been slightly better than expected, allowing 2 earned runs or fewer in 3 of his 4 starts.

BET METS ( -105 ).

Run line/Against the spread

Taking New York as a slight underdog to win straight up is the safer play in this series opener. The Mets should bounce back after getting blown out at the Dodgers last time out, but it’s unlikely they win by 2 or more runs.

PASS . Bet Mets ML and/or the total instead.

The Over is 7-2 when the Mets are on the road this season, which is the highest clip in MLB for a team’s away games. The Mets are also 4-0 to the Over in their last 4 games.

Winn’s worst outing of the season so far was his only home start April 6 when he gave up 4 earned runs to the Padres, who average 1.31 fewer runs per road game than the Mets.

BET OVER 8.5 ( -105 ).
