Boston College to face Denver in Frozen Four final

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 8:27 AM EDT / CBS/AP

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Freshman Will Smith had two goals, Cutter Gauthier scored his nation-leading 38th of the season and No. 1 overall seed Boston College beat Michigan 4-0 on Thursday night in the Eagles' first Frozen Four appearance since 2016.

Boston College (34-5-1) will look to avenge an October loss to Denver when the two teams square off on Saturday for the national championship. The Eagles, in their 26th Frozen Four, are seeking their sixth title in program history - and first since 2012.

"I can't put into words what it would feel like to win a national championship for our team, for our alumni and our school," freshman forward Ryan Leonard said in the locker room after the victory. "We're just trying to make them proud."

"We're just trying to embrace the moment and embrace the opportunity," said Eagles captain Eamon Powell. "Win or lose, Saturday is going to be our last game with this same group of guys. It's been such a fun journey and such a fun ride. We have such a close group. The biggest thing is just enjoying it and trying to play to our system."

Michigan (23-15-2) was playing in the Frozen Four for a third consecutive season, and 28th overall.

Smith opened the scoring 80 seconds into the game by capitalizing on a 2-on-1. Smith doubled the lead in the second when he curled around the net and sent a shot off two skate blades into the goal. Smith leads the nation with 71 points this season.

Gauthier, the nation's scoring leader, scored 49 seconds later on a breakaway when he sent a shot under the pads of Jake Barczewski.

Gauthier is tied with Ryan Potulny (Minnesota, 2006) for the most Division I goals in a season since 2000. Mike Donnelly holds the overall record with 59, set in 1986.

Freshman Jacob Fowler secured his third shutout of the season by making 32 saves.

Denver shuts out Boston College 2-0 to win record 10th men's college hockey title

Goaltender Matt Davis stopped all 35 shots he faced, including 23 in the third period, to lead Denver to a 2-0 win over Boston College in the men's hockey championship on Saturday in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Jared Wright and Rieger Lorenz scored one goal apiece for third-seeded Denver (32-9-3), which won the title for the second time in three seasons and earned its NCAA-record 10th championship. The Pioneers previously were tied with Michigan with nine titles apiece.

Ryan Leonard fired eight shots on goal for top-seeded Boston College (34-6-1). Will Smith added seven shots for the Eagles, who could not find a way to beat Davis as they lost for the first time in 16 games.

Denver players poured over the bench and onto the ice as the final horn sounded. They tossed their sticks, gloves and helmets into the air and formed a mob along the boards as Leonard and several other Boston College playersfell to their knees and hunched over the ice.

The game remained scoreless for nearly 30 minutes before Denver broke the stalemate.

The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead with 10:18 to go in the second period. Wright handled the puck in the left circle and fired a shot that hit the post, bounced off the back of Eagles goaltender Jacob Fowler and trickled into thenet.

The sequence ended with the 15th goal of the season for Wright, a sophomore forward who grew up in Burnsville, Minnesota, and scored the biggest goal of his college career in his home state.

Denver increased its lead to 2-0 with 4:47 remaining in the second period. Lorenz took a pass from Zeev Buium and ripped a wrist shot from the left circle for his 16th goal.

Boston College played at a desperate pace late in the third period but could not find the back of the net as Davis robbed Leonard. The Eagles had a two-minute power play after Denver's Jack Devine went to the penalty box for tripping with 7:54 remaining, but Davis turned aside multiple shots to maintain the shutout.

The pressure continued as Boston College pulled Fowler for an extra attacker with about 2:40 to go. Davis stopped shot after shot, and Denver cleared the puck in the waning seconds.

High-powered Boston College beats Michigan to earn shot at NCAA men’s hockey title

Follow along with live updates from Saturday’s national title game

ST. PAUL, Minn. — It wasn’t all bad for the Boston teams competing Thursday in the Frozen Four semifinals at Xcel Energy Center. After Boston University saw its season come to an end with a crushing 2-1 overtime loss to Denver , Boston College made sure there would be a Hockey East representative in Saturday night’s championship game.

Freshman goalie Jacob Fowler stopped 32 shots and classmate Will Smith scored twice in a 4-0 win over Michigan. It will mark BC’s first appearance in the title game since 2012, and its 12th overall. The Eagles will be going for the program’s sixth NCAA title.

“It was a track meet, which we kind of expected. A lot of rushes going both ways,” said BC coach Greg Brown. “I think our rush defense was probably the best part of our game tonight. They did a great job there.”

BC entered the third period with a 3-0 lead and quickly expanded it when Gabe Perreault carried the puck behind the net and scored on a wraparound at 5:03 for the 4-0 edge.

For the game’s final 15 minutes, BC was content to keep the clock moving, clearing the puck, and using frequent line changes to salt away the game. When the whistle blew for the second media timeout with less than seven minutes remaining, the stands began to empty, the outcome all but official. When it was over, Fowler had his 32nd win over the season, and the Eagles had their 15th win in a row.

BC (34-5-1) wasted little time jumping out to a 1-0 lead, compliments of the freshman line, when Ryan Leonard connected with Smith, sending a cross-ice pass on a two on one that Smith gathered and buried past Jake Barczewski 1:20 into the first period.

Shots would be hard to come by, even with the Eagles getting a pair of power plays. The first came at 12:16 when Michigan’s Mark Estapa was called for boarding, but the man advantage lasted all of 35 seconds before Leonard went off on a tripping call at 12:51. The Eagles would get one more power play after Estapa went back to the box, this time for tripping, at 15:50.

Again, BC came up empty, and would finish the first period with just six shots on net, but a 1-0 lead.

The freshman line almost struck again in the second minute of the second period when Leonard went in on a breakaway, deked a defender, and cut across the net, but Barczewski was able to block his backhander.

The Wolverines (23-15-3) went on the power play after Cutter Gauthier was whistled for interference at 4:05, leaving BC without one of their more effective members on the penalty kill. But the Eagles, who entered with the top-ranked penalty kill at 89.3 percent, were up for the challenge and held Michigan off the scoreboard.

BC would head to the penalty kill again when Drew Fortescue went off for tripping at 11:45, but the Wolverines’ power play was short-lived with their own tripping call at 12:11. With both teams a man down, the game resumed four on four. With more room to operate, BC struck for a pair of goals 49 seconds apart to seize a 3-0 lead.

Smith notched his second of the game at 12:25, carrying the puck behind the net and flipping it out front, where it banked off Michigan defenseman Ethan Edwards and into the net. It was the 25th goal and the NCAA-leading 71st point of the season for the Lexington native.

Just 49 seconds later, Gauthier forced a turnover in the defensive zone and took off on a breakaway, beating Barczewski five-hole for a 3-0 advantage. It was Gauthier’s 38th goal, which tied David Emma (1989-90) and Scott Harlow (1985-86) for BC’s single-season record.

To capture a sixth national title, BC will have to get past Denver, something it failed to do in a 4-3 loss at Conte Forum on Oct. 21.

“Anytime someone commits to Boston College, it’s to win championships, and we have an opportunity for that on Saturday,” said Gauthier. “Been super proud of our group up to this point. And we owe these guys.”

Boston College's Will Smith buries the open-net goal in the first period, which gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead over Michigan in the NCAA men's hockey semifinals.

After Frozen Four runs fall short, both Boston College and Boston University men’s hockey teams will have to reload

Boston College sophomore Cutter Gauthier, after leading the nation in goals, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Just like that, the ride is over.

The expectations for the men’s hockey programs of Boston College and Boston University began in the preseason, when a glance at the rosters had local fans envisioning the possibility of both programs reaching the Frozen Four.

As both teams straightened out the early kinks, the idea that the two storied rivals, who spent much of the second half ranked top two in the country, could play for a national championship only seemed to grow stronger. When they navigated through the NCAA regionals to the Xcel Energy Center for the national semifinals, the matchup seemed inevitable.

But Denver had other ideas, knocking off the Terriers, 2-1, on Thursday , then dashing any hopes of the NCAA trophy heading to Boston by blanking the Eagles, 2-0, in Saturday’s title game .

Two remarkable seasons have come to an end, and now comes an offseason in which both squads figure to see plenty of turnover, with some of the high-end talent making the leap to the pros.

One of the biggest names needed just 24 hours to make a decision. BC sophomore forward Cutter Gauthier, who led the nation in goals with 38, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

His development into a 200-foot player really took hold this year, as he played on both the power-play and penalty-kill units, while also squaring off with the opposing team’s top line.

It was clear in his postgame comments when he was asked about his future where it was probably headed.

“Just trying to cherish every last moment as being a college athlete,” Gauthier said Saturday.

As for the vaunted freshman line , it seems unlikely that all three first-round draft picks will be back.

Ryan Leonard’s surge in the second half of the season, as well as his physicality, certainly gave the impression that he was ready for the NHL. The Amherst native was one of just three players to eclipse the 30-goal mark with 31, trailing only Gauthier (38) and BU freshman Macklin Celebrini (32). He’ll hear from the Capitals, who selected him with the eighth pick in 2023.

But he could benefit from another year at Chestnut Hill, and would likely have linemate Gabe Perreault back. The Rangers, who took Perreault with the 23rd pick last June, might not be in a rush to bring him in as they have a talented roster competing for the Presidents’ Trophy. Perreault also could use another college season to work on developing physically.

Will Smith’s game appears to be ready to make the jump to the NHL, although the Lexington native could opt to stay close to home for another year for further development. Should he sign with the Sharks, who selected him fourth last season, Smith would seem to be ready to crack their lineup.

Should he do so, he could be a part of an intriguing rookie class, depending on what Celebrini decides to do. That decision will have to wait a while, as the Hobey Baker winner will be eligible for this year’s draft June 28, two weeks after he turns 18, and is expected to be selected No. 1 overall .

With the worst record in the NHL, the Sharks are in contention for the top pick. That would be just fine with the Celebrini clan. Macklin’s father Rick is the director of sports medicine and performance for the Golden State Warriors and spoke with San Jose Hockey Now about the idea of his son returning to California.

“It would be amazing. We talk about it all the time,” Rick Celebrini said. “We try not to go there either because it’s out of our hands and you really don’t want to be disappointed, either. But, as a family, it would be unbelievable to have him here with us in the Bay where we could help him and support him at different times.

“The game of hockey is really ready to take off in the Bay, and for him to hopefully contribute to that build would be really fun to be a part of.”

The possibility of adding Smith and Celebrini, as well as Lincoln native Collin Graf, who signed with the Sharks last month after his junior season with Quinnipiac , is an intriguing one. But if a different organization ends up with the No. 1 pick, there could be a slim chance Celebrini is back with the Terriers.

The Terriers have already seen sophomore Lane Hutson and senior Dylan Peterson make the jump to the NHL with the Canadiens and Blues, respectively. Hutson took to Instagram over the weekend to thank BU and its fans, along with a few of his highlights from his two seasons with the team.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lane Hutson (@lanehutson_)

“Huge thank you to @terrierhockey for two amazing seasons. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for all the great memories. Also, thanks to all the terrier fans, @bu_dogpound and @buband for all the support. I will always consider myself a terrier! I’m very excited to get going with @canadiensmtl and see what this next chapter brings!”

Fortunately for BU, there’s another Hutson on the way. Younger brother Cole, also a defenseman, will hit the ice at Agganis Arena in the fall.

2024 Frozen Four - Denver v Boston College

Now that we’ve had some time to reflect on the 2023-24 men’s hockey season, our hockey writers are reflecting on BC’s outstanding season. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

How did this season end up compared to your expectations?

Laura: I’m so proud of this year’s team. I expected them to make it to TD Garden during Hockey East and to make a decent NCAA run, and for such a young team to have won the Hockey East regular season, the Hockey East Tournament, and made it to the NCAA Championship is so impressive. They exceeded my expectations for sure.

Steven: I was pretty sure that the team would be good, but I definitely didn’t see them being as dominant as they were for basically the entire season. I said I was hoping for a finish near the top of Hockey East and a postseason run and we certainly got that even if we hated the ending.

Curtis: Wow! They blew my expectations out of the water. I knew we were going to get a good team that would be a championship contender on paper, but it was incredible to watch it happen in real time. They looked like one of the greatest college hockey teams ever.

Maithri: I don’t even know how to put my answer to this into words. I came into this season with no real expectations — I just wanted to enjoy watching this team, and I got so much more than that! They blew any expectations I could’ve even had out of the water. This team was so special and such a blast to watch, and I really couldn’t have asked for any more coming into it.

What impressed you the most about the team this season?

Laura: Their ability to readjust during games. When things weren’t working for them, this coaching staff and these players were able to try new things and adjust their strategy mid-game to give themselves the best chance of winning.

Steven: Just how quickly these guys could put up goals in bunches. It felt like every weekend they would be in a close game and then they’d have a stretch where they’d score two or three goals in a five minute stretch to separate. There was just so much high level offensive talent on display every single night.

Curtis: The unselfishness. The way everyone passed the puck and set up scoring opportunities was absolutely magical, and that’s not easy to do when you have a roster as talented as this one. Everybody completely bought into the team culture and they were dedicated to winning hockey games, not just putting up stats.

Maithri: UGH this is another thing that I could probably go on and on and on about, but I’ll keep it short. I’d say probably their ability to win games in different ways! They had blowout wins, comeback wins, overtime wins, one-goal wins, you name it. It felt like this team had an answer for whatever they were facing - they almost always wore teams down as the game went on, and then when the moment was right, would completely take over and shut down the opposition. The team’s dedication to defense also impressed me a ton this year — every single player was involved in defending, which made it hard for teams to score on them while also leading to effective break outs. It was really such a treat to watch and I’m so excited to see it continue building as the years go on!

What would you like to see the team work on ahead of next season?

Laura: There is nothing that sticks out as a major problem! Improving a little on the faceoff would be great, but it isn’t something I’m worried about.

Steven: They’re going to have to find a way to get more scoring from their depth forwards. When Gabe Perreault missed a few games at the end of the season, this essentially turned into a one line team until Jack Malone had the game of his life against UConn in the Hockey East playoffs. The five non-Malone forwards who finished the season in the bottom six combined for 12 goals on the season. That’s not good enough and it puts a ton of pressure on the best players to be on every single night.

Curtis: It’s hard to critique a team that did so well in basically every facet of the game. But I’d like to see an improvement in faceoffs for sure.

Maithri: Maybe just faceoffs — it burned them in some of their losses this season, so working on winning them is probably the one (1) thing that I’d like to see them improve on!

How are you feeling about Greg Brown now that he has 2 seasons under his belt as BC’s head coach?

Laura: I have wanted Greg Brown as Coach York’s successor since before he left BC for the NHL, and I feel very vindicated in that opinion. I think Coach Brown is a fantastic leader for this team.

Steven: Awfully hard not to be impressed by the season that Brown just put together. It’s hard to succeed when the expectations coming into a season are high, but he certainly managed to do that. It will be interesting to see how he handles the offseason and how he is able to rebuild the roster ahead of next season.

Curtis: You can point to all of the talent on BC’s roster and say his job was easy, but real ones know how good of a job Brown was doing. The defense had a ridiculous 1-year turnaround, he got the all-star linemates to be completely unselfish, the penalty kill was absurdly efficient, and he made a lot of adjustments throughout the year that helped the team get as far as they did. BC men’s hockey is in good hands.

Maithri: I feel so confident in him and am so, so excited for the future of the program under him. Again, I think this is another question that I could really go on forever about. Being able to almost flawlessly integrate fourteen newcomers into a roster and build the team into what it was is incredible. Though there was a lot of talent, we see year in and year out that raw talent isn’t enough to make deep tournament runs — in the conference or nationally. Brown was really able to blend the experience on the current roster with the raw talent of the underclassmen, and his Hockey East and National Coach of the Year awards are extremely well deserved.

Who is your MVP for the season?

Laura: You could make the argument for so many players on this team as MVP, but Gabe Perrault is the glue that holds them together. They play differently when he isn’t available, and he boosts the offense so much.

Steven: I want to say Will Smith just for leading the country in scoring as a freshman, but I’ll go with Cutter Gauthier for pushing 40 goals and finishing right behind Smith in overall points.

Curtis: Do I have to pick one? If so, then I’ll take Gabe Perreault as the guy that made everything click.

Maithri: I really cannot choose, but probably Cutter Gauthier? He came back for another year — whether it was his original plan or not — and really gave it his all this season while developing into a strong 200-foot player!

Who do you think improved the most from last season to this season?

Laura: Oskar Jellvik made a huge jump this season - you can see it in his numbers, but his speed and hockey sense really shone as well.

Steven: Cutter Gauthier. Gauthier went from having a strong freshman season to leading the NCAA in goals and being one of the best players in the country. That’s a massive step to take.

Curtis: Eamon Powell. He went from a solid defensemen to a leader of one of the best defensive units in college hockey.

Maithri: Oskar Jellvik!

Which freshman are you most excited to watch as they continue to play at BC?

Laura: All of them?!?! But I am really excited to see how Drew Fortescue develops - He was great this season but I think we’re going to see a bigger jump from him next season than any of the other rising sophomores.

Steven: Jacob Fowler. Nothing against Mitch Benson and Eric Dop, but I missed having an awesome goalie prospect that we get to watch for multiple seasons. Fowler was fantastic as a freshman and I’m so excited to see if he can continue to develop as an elite college goalie.

Curtis: JA-COB-FOW-LER! *clap* *clap* *clap clap clap*

Maithri: I literally cannot pick one, especially if we’re expecting the Smith/Leonard/Perreault line to return. So like my preseason roundtable answer, I’ll say Jacob Fowler.

The Laura Classic - let’s end this with a song that best describes this season?

Laura: Applause by Lady Gaga. This team loves to win and they’re only going to be more motivated to get those trophies next year.

Steven: You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones

Curtis: Time of Our Lives - Pitbull & Ne-Yo

Maithri: Unstoppable by The Score

2024 NFL Draft picks by college team, conference: Michigan leads the way, Texas sets program record

Counting the 2024 nfl draft picks by school and conference.

Syndication: Austin American-Statesman

The 2024 NFL Draft concluded on Saturday with a busy four rounds of action that featured far more defensive players than we saw in the early rounds, but also a strong reflection of the trends we saw in college football the previous season. The SEC finished with the most draft picks of any conference, as has come to be expected after notable dominance in that category over the last 10-15 years. However, the Pac-12 backed up a strong year on the field with a strong year in the draft by producing the second-most draft picks.

The irony, of course, being that the Pac-12 has a terrific NFL Draft showing just as the league is splintering, with four teams heading to the Big Ten (USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington), four teams heading to to the Big 12 (Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah) and two teams joining the ACC (Cal, Stanford) later this summer. But the draft picks we saw this weekend were players from Pac-12 competition, so the league gets to celebrate one last time with one of the top non-SEC counts in college football.

In terms of the school count, there was some intrigue as to whether Michigan would challenge Georgia's record for the most NFL Draft picks in a single year. Though the Wolverines will end up with even more players getting camp invites, the final total on draft picks is just 13, which is two players short of the Bulldogs' record from 2022. Michigan did finish as the school with the most draft picks overall, leading a group that also included Texas (11), Alabama (10), Florida State (10) and Washington (10).

Texas' 11 NFL Draft picks were the most in program history for the seven-round era, and it follows a season that saw the Longhorns win their first Big 12 title since 2009 and make their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. Steve Sarkisian's program saw two players picked in the first round (Byron Murphy, Xavier Worthy), two players picked in the second (Jonathon Brooks, AD Mitchell), and then six players picked on Day 3, with tight end JT Sanders (Round 4 to the Panthers), offensive lineman Christian Jones (Round 5 to the Cardinals), running back Keilan Robinson (Round 5 to the Jaguars), linebacker Jaylan Ford (Round 5 to the Saints), defensive back Ryan Watts (Round 6 to the Steelers) and wide receiver Jordan Whittington (Round 6 to the Rams) rounding out the group.
