This visit was given to us as a gift and whilst anticipating an interesting couple of hours the trip exceeded our expectations in every way.

For anyone who wants to know about the recent (WW2) and not so recent history of Bristol, this is a no-brainer. I have lived in Bristol all my life and I had no idea about the preserved underground air-raid shelter in the centre of Bristol. Guide (Duncan) was excellent.

A brilliant, absorbing, engrossing tour, sooo fascinating, Duncan the awesome guide oozed passion and enthusiasm…..The outstanding reviews say it all….. I could GO on and on ..so just GO!!

An excellent tour for locals and visitors alike. The tour is very informative and eye-opening, and the Air Raid shelter is very thought provoking. Highly recommended.

A fascinating insight into the history of a building and area in Bristol I knew little about. Duncan was both enlightening and entertaining with an obvious passion for his subject

An excellent tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to people interested in Bristol, the blitz and the war

Very informative - a fascinating hidden world and a real glimpse back into the everyday experience of people in World War 2. An engaging and well-informed guide who worked well with all on the tour.

Wonderful experience of historic Bristol

Knowledgeable and friendly host with a good delivery, balancing facts with humour. Very enjoyable and informative whether you are familiar with Bristol or not.

An excellent and entertaining tour taking us to locations that we wouldn’t have otherwise have access to.

Duncan was fab. Amusing and knowledgeable. And the tour was fascinating and something that should become a better known attraction.

A great guide who talks about various points of history. Great even if you've lived in Bristol for many years

Duncan was a Brillient tour guide very friendly and interesting the your was amazing that I’m buying tickets for members of my family

I found it all interesting. Duncan knows all about St Nicks. I will be recommending 👍

This was a really interesting tour. We live in Bristol but didn’t know about the air raid shelters or a lot of the history about the area. Duncan was a great tour guide and I have recommended friends to book a tour!

I bought this as a Christmas present for my dad and as a Bristolian and a history buff he loved it. I found the tour really interesting and thought that the host Duncan was fantastic. He was funny and really engaging. I would highly recommend this tour.

A very special tour

A great tour - interesting, fun and thought-provoking. Duncan is an excellent guide - passionate about his subject.

Loved it, anyone who likes history will love this

Absolutely amazing! Not too short, not too long! Diverse information about the history of Bristol as well as the unique attraction of the air raid shelters! Will absolutely be promoting the great work that Duncan does! This tour was absolutely amazing!

Such an interesting tour, lived in Bristol my whole life and didn’t know any of the facts told so was really amazing to learn. The bunker was super cool and not what I was expecting, Duncan was so funny and kept me entertained throughout but he knew his facts and could tell he loves what he does! Couldn’t recommend it more!!

A great couple of hours great fun and well worth the money, I have told friends who have already booked for a couple of weeks time

Great experience and lovely tour guide. Bring a brolly if it rains as first hour is outside. Shelter was fascinating and a unique adventure

new things to learn although have lived in Bristol for 50+years

Duncan is a great tour guide. The basement air raid shelter is something else!

Loved this tour of my home town. So interesting to hear the history and see what has been there all along unseen by most Bristolians. Your guide was great and really engaging. Would highly recommend

Excellent knowledge form the guide and fascinating history

A great tour with an excellent & knowledgeable guide

Duncan and Ross were fantastic, very informative throughout and helped me and my partner to discover things about an area of Bristol we regularly commute through! Would recommend to anyone

Excellent & unique tour. Have lived in Bristol for over 70 years but learnt many new facts about Bristol whilst on the tour. A great new attraction for the city made even better by the excellent guide Duncan. Have already recommended this tour to our friends.

Learnt so much history on this tour. A great solo activity!

Wonderful tour guide…very knowledgeable, interesting… he could not have been better!

My friend fancied the tour guide. Congratulations!

This was a great tour, knowledgeable guide with boundless enthusiasm for the subject. We saw lots of things that were interesting and I didn't know about. Thoroughly recommend and finished off with lunch in the market.

This tour very interesting, the host engaged and engaging. I learnt lots of interesting things about Bristol that I’d never previously known despite living here for over 40 years. I’d highly recommend this tour.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The first half was around the market, looking up and listening to lots of interesting facts about things I’ve never noticed before. Then we went down into the basement and the air raid shelter. Fascinating to see.

A very interesting tour led by a very knowledgeable guide. Excellent!

Great experience, have learned things about Bristol even though I am a Bristolian

We weren’t sure what to expect, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening experience ! And look forward to paying another visit in the fullness of time when it becomes a museum ! Great experience

Fantastic tour, the host was brilliant. Really interesting subject matter, taught me many things about Bristol that I didn't previously know. Very good value for money too. Would recommend.

This was a great tour. Genuinely enlightening and entertaining and the 2 hours flew by.

We loved this walk. Duncan is a great host, knowledgeable and well delivered. We don't live in Bristol but know the city reasonably well from uni years and learnt so much about both visible history at street level and the amazing air raid shelter. Felt it was really good value for money, have recommended to friends and family and I know one is about to book already!

A privilege to be able to go 'behind the scenes' and into the depths (and heights!) of the Corn Exchange building. Very interesting and fun to see unknown territory.

Excellent and fun afternoon

Wholesome & fun day out. Me and my friend went together but this would be perfect for a date, family outing or solo trip! Duncan was a very kind guide and kept the energy going throughout which we were very impressed with! Interesting insights throughout so now I have loads of facts to tell my friends who visit Bristol :) the shelter was a highlight! So fascinating it's like a massive time capsule!!

Really enjoyed our trip

A great experience!

Excellent! Highly recommend. Tour guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. Fascinating getting to see parts of St Nics that aren’t usually accessible.

Really enjoyed the experience. Duncan was a great host. Funny and informative.

Guide very knowledgeable, informative and good interaction with group.

The tour was excellent. Our guide Duncan was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic with a lovely sense of humour. The tour was very interesting especially the air raid shelter. I have already recommended the tour to friends. It was amazing

The tour was informative and fun

Duncan is a fantastic host and we learnt a huge amount in two hours whilst having a great time. Despite living in Bristol for my whole life I definitely found out new facts and stories. The subterranean experience is amazing and very atmospheric, the tour of the exterior and roof is equally fascinating. This tour takes you from Anglo Saxon times all the way to the present day. A lovely way to spend a couple of hours if you’re new to the city, just visiting or a lifelong Bristolian. Thanks Duncan

I really enjoyed the tour on Saturday. Duncan was fantastic, overall I found it to be a very engaging session and as a result I still remember all the things explained on the day! I loved to know more about Bristol and learned a lot of stuff that I did not know was taking place in Bristol before WWII and back in time during the slave trade. Duncan really showed some amazing perks of St Nicks Market! I would really recommend to anyone to go and take the tour themselves as it's a great experience.

Fantastic tour, great access to hidden parts of the city and a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide

We absolutely loved this tour!! Having lived in Bristol for over 10 years I thought I knew a fair bit about the market and the area - but I was very wrong! Learnt so much on this tour and the energy and enthusiasm of the host was infectious! Would highly recommend to anyone, you will not be disappointed!

Learnt a lot about Bristol's history - great to be able to see the air raid shelter which otherwise wouldn't have been accessible

Fab experience learning about the history of the corn market & the unknown air raid shelter - recommended

Very interesting tour with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable host. We were privileged to look round the air raid shelter beneath the corn exchange that is not normally opened to the public. It would make a fascinating museum. Overall I learned a lot and would highly recommend the experience

Very informative and great to see the air raid shelter. Duncan brought history to life.

Such an interesting tour with an excellent guide. Have lived in Bristol for 30 years yet learnt so much about this familiar area. The guide really bought history to life.

This was a great tour, so interesting and Duncan the host was cool, funny and very informative. Altogether fantastic.

Initially I thought the group was too big to be comfortable but Duncan had a good loud and clear voice and made the whole experience very enjoyable. I would certainly recommend his tour.

Brilliant tour guide. Very knowledgeable, interesting & fun. Thoroughly enjoyed it . Learnt loads

Our host had done research to make the tour informative. I used to work in the area but had never looked up it was good to hear the history of the buildings and see the decorative facades. It was interesting to see the air raid shelter and learn the history of the corn exchange.

Highly knowledgeable guide, taking us to areas normally closed to the public. Highly recommended for Bristol residents and tourists alike!

A very enjoyable Tour with a very good host.

A very interesting insight into a part of Bristol I did not know existed.

Has inspired me to look up more and appreciate the architecture around us

this was brilliant - so informative and great fun - exploring part of the city which can go overlooked and to be able to access the air raid shelter was fabulous - would highly recomend

The St Nicholas Market and Air Raid Shelter Tour was a most informative yet entertaining history lesson of Bristol from Saxon times to present day. We finished the tour feeling well grounded in how the city developed and the activities and customs of the city forefathers, many which still impact our lives today. Well worth the ticket price. Thank you!

It was fun and packed with historic facts. I recommend it to everybody who wants to know a bit more about Bristol. Duncan is an excellent host.

Excellent tour. Very knowledgable host. Would recommend and even go myself again.

Great tour by Duncan

Duncan was very knowledgeable and had a sense of humour. I would definitely recommend👍👍👍👍👍👍

Extremely interesting.

Brilliant. Duncan was great and really engaged my war mad 11 year old. I’ve lived in Bristol for 14 years and learnt loads of stuff I didn’t know.

If you don’t know Bristol, this is a great place to start, & if you think you do, you’ll find out some things you didn’t. Highlights are access to the usually closed air raid shelter in the basement and the glories to be seen from the roof of the Corn Exchange, but there’s a lot more that you may have noticed before but didn’t know the stories behind. Duncan is a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide – recommended!

The Tour coincided with my (Senior) birthday and was a very appropriate event for me, as I used to frequent this part of Bristol in my younger days, but now live in N.Ireland. Our guide (Duncan), was excellent and provided both a witty and lively commentary of all the interesting features to be seen . I am a retired Military Sea-Captain, so there was a special interest for me here. Thank you and Highly recommend the tour.

Really good tour. Duncan, the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and engaging which made the whole tour very enjoyable, we learnt so much about the area and would highly recommend the tour to anyone else.

Duncan was an excellent tour guide

The Suspension Bridge was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, one of the most famous engineers of the 19th century, and was completed in 1864. The bridge was built to connect Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset, and it was considered a mighty feat of engineering at the time. The bridge spans the Avon Gorge and is a thousand feet long – it really is magnificent to behold.

Tour the Underground Railroad in Bucks County

For thousands of escaped slaves in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, the Underground Railroad represented hope for a new life. This secret network of hidden, safe places relied on abolitionists and kind communities to aid runaways on their journey northward. Bucks County was home to many important stops on the railroad from taverns and churches to privately owned farms, many of which can still be visited today. Follow this list to trace the journey that many people took as they sought freedom.

Follow these driving directions to the stops located in Upper and Central Bucks County. Take the tour in Lower Bucks County with these driving directions .

  • Tunnels under Wedgwood Inn

1870 Wedgwood Inn

During the revolution, armaments were stored in the cellar of this Victorian bed and breakfast’s original structure. However, during the time of the Underground Railroad, it was used to hide people on their journey north. There is a hatch in the Gazebo on the property that leads down to the underground tunnel system that people would use to get to the canal and continue on to Lumberville. If you're an overnight guest, you might just get lucky enough to see it!

African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church

At almost 200-years-old, the AME Church is the oldest African American church in Bensalem and a former Underground Railroad safe station. Robert Purvis, an abolitionist and one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society, rowed slaves up the Delaware River from Philadelphia to take refuge at the church and their farm in Bensalem. It is estimated that he aided some 9,000 fugitives in escaping, making him one of the single most important individuals in Bucks County associated with abolitionism. Purvis was also a key figure in enabling the fugitive slave Basil Dorsey to win his freedom in a court trial in Doylestown in the 1830s. A runaway slave from Roanoke, Virginia, Leroy Allen, found sanctuary here before joining the Union Army to fight for his freedom. He later settled in Bensalem and is buried at the church.

The Archambault House

Most recognizable for the beautiful iron grillwork on its porch, the Archambault House, was a station on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. A dentist, innkeeper, postmaster and former owner of the Brick Hotel, Joseph O. Archambault, helped slaves keep moving north. Note: This is a private residence, please view from afar.

Buckingham Friends Meeting House

Bristol was one of the many stops on the road to freedom and provided hiding spots for runaway slaves. The people of Bristol even purchased freedom for runaway Dick Shad who had sought refuge in Bristol after being a slave for twenty years in Virginia. Now, Bristol is full of historic buildings and locations just waiting to be discovered.

Members of the Buckingham Meeting House (also referred to as the Solebury Friends Meeting House) gave up slave ownership in 1776. After the abduction of a local slave and beloved figure, Benjamin “Big Ben” Jones, abolitionists held a series of anti-slavery lectures here and in Lambertville. Today, Buckingham Friends Meeting House is a place of worship where services take place every Sunday.

Continental Tavern

It is believed that the Continental Tavern (the Continental Hotel in the 1800s), the Yardley Grist Mill (a former mill that supplied sorghum and meal to Union soldiers) and Lakeside (one of the earliest homes in the area) were also stops on the Railroad that were connected by an underground tunnel system. Today, the Continental Tavern is popular for happy hour and delicious dinners. Try out one of their specialties like the Continental Bacon Burger or the Striped Bass, which pairs perfectly with one of their bottled craft beers. 105 East State Street was the home of Samuel Aaron, a pastor at the New Britain Baptist Church for a time in the early 1830s. He was also a manager of the American Anti-slavery Society, and is reputed to have concealed fugitive slaves at his home in the Borough. (Note: This is a private residence, please view from afar).

Gather Place Museum

Stop into this historic museum on South Canal Street in Yardley Borough located in the old African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church  from 1877. Under the conservatorship of local historian Shirley Lee Corsey, visitors can marvel at this historic landmark while attending fundraising events and projects dedicated to the African American community.

  • Harriet Tubman statue along Bristol waterfront

Harriet Tubman Memorial Statue

While walking along the waterfront, don't miss The Harriet Tubman Memorial Statue, a must-see among Bucks County’s Underground Railroad sites! Tubman dedicated her life to freedom and is perhaps one of the most well-known conductors on the Underground Railroad. She risked her life a number of times before the Civil War to guide nearly 70 slaves northward.

During the Civil War, Langhorne, then known as the village of Attleboro, served as an Underground Railroad station connecting Princeton, New Jersey, and New York. Attleboro was home to one of the earliest free black communities in Bucks County, and the American Methodist Episcopal church, formed in 1809, is the earliest such congregation to be organized in Bucks County. There are African-American veterans of the Union Army buried in many of Bucks County's various graveyards, including in Langhorne. In 1876, the town was renamed for Jeremiah Langhorne, a former chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Mount Gilead Church

The first all African-American congregation to exist in Bucks County was a critical stop on the Underground Railroad. Between 1830 and 1840, the congregation expanded from 70 people to 162. These runaway slaves from Maryland, Delaware, and the Carolinas used the cover of Buckingham Mountain to create their new lives and live remotely. The capture of their most famous church goer, Benjamin “Big Ben” Jones, who was sold out by a white resident in the area became one of the major rallying cries for the congregation and gave them more incentive to continue their church and make sure it was stronger than ever. The small church still stands today in Holicong, near New Hope, accompanied by a graveyard. Visitors and locals can attend regular church service there today. There are rumors that Big Ben is buried here, though others say he is presumed to be buried in a potter’s field by his wife Sarah somewhere near the Bucks County Almshouse.

  • The Colored Church, Yardley

Newtown Theatre

The Newtown Theatre, the oldest continually operating movie theater in the United States, was known as Newtown Hall in the early 1850s. It was a popular location for town gatherings and anti-slavery meetings. Famous abolitionists, including Lucretia Mott and Frederick Douglass are noted as speaking here.

New Hope served as the end of the Underground Railroad in Bucks County. Here slaves would cross the Delaware River into New Jersey, continuing on their journey north. Are you a big history buff? While in town, stop by the Parry Mansion Museum for a guided historic tour. Built in 1784 by one of New Hope's founders, Benjamin Parry, the mansion has furnishings in 11 rooms reflecting 125 years of decor.

Located just off of Rt. 309 in the downtown Quakertown area, the  Quakertown Historical Society  and  Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce  share a space in a historic 19th century barn. The building also houses a glass-enclosed display highlighting historic artifacts documenting 150 years of industry and commerce in Upper Bucks County.

Richard Moore House

Due to the distance between stops - up to 10 miles - Richard Moore's stone house became one of the most important stations on the Underground Railroad for slaves traveling through Bucks County. A local potter, Moore became noted for his hospitality and many were directed to his home. Former slave Henry Franklin drove the wagon that transported pottery, coal, and the secret slaves under cargo, for Moore. The two helped more than 600 escaped slaves find freedom and his kindness can now be read about in the book Richard Moore and the Underground Railroad at Quakertown by Robert L. Leight. (Note: This is a private residence, please view from afar).

Several locations in Yardley were likely hiding places for fugitive slaves, including a white-columned mansion on South Main Street, a shop on Afton Avenue, a house on South Canal Street, the Old Library, the borough Baptist and American Methodist Episcopal churches and a stone house on River Road .

If this list sparks your interest, we recommend checking out the  The North Star , a film shot in  Bucks County  that tells the true story of runaway slave Big Ben seeking freedom from Maryland in Bucks County. Bristol underground: Mayor says studies show it is viable

  • Published 26 August 2022

Aerial shot of Bristol city centre

A city mayor says new studies show his plan for an underground rail network is viable.

Marvin Rees said Bristol has been "left behind" on transport and needs a mass-transit system.

Two studies were commissioned ahead of a West of England Combined Authority (WECA) consultation on travel options for the city.

Consultants say the underground - previously estimated to cost up to £4bn - could handle 3,000 people an hour.

In the joint executive summary for the reports , they conclude that while an underground network would be more expensive than alternatives, it would cause less disruption to major roads and boost property prices along its routes.

Bristol's tube network plan

It would require "substantial capital expenditure that could be difficult to secure" but "has the potential to cover its operating costs", the reports said.

It would also "likely result in significant enhanced public transport connectivity" for areas of the city that are currently poorly served, the report summary stated.

Mr Rees said that although various parties had come up with travel plans for Bristol "the reality is nothing was delivered and Bristol commuters continue to crawl".

'We're not a village'

"The mass transit plan, including going underground, is Bristol and our wider region's only real option for a future transport system that works," he said.

"Bristol has been left behind on transport while all other big British cities have built and modernised mass transit: our city has delivered nothing in recent decades."

Mr Rees said the studies showed that an underground network wasn't "some grand design".

"It's us punching at, not above, our weight, in line with Newcastle, Liverpool, and Glasgow," he said.

"We're a core city, and a global city, not a village. We need a modern, low-carbon transport system, yesterday."

Mr Rees will hold the position of mayor until 2024, after a referendum voted to scrap the post and replace it with a committee system.

Booked my parents and in laws a tour with Daniel to check out the town of Bath, the Bath museum and a drive out to Stonehenge. The booking process and communication ahead of the tour was seamless and prompt. He provided all the details needed for them ahead of time as well as a WhatsApp number to reach out to if there were any issues. They took the train from London to Bath and met Daniel at the train station with no issues. Parents spent a great day with Daniel and came back with only rave things to say about the tour, how seamless getting around was, and what a great guy Daniel was. They are not a easy bunch to please! We learned so much - everything from British history to how to locate fire hydrants. The towns were beautiful as well. We were a little apprehensive about the tea visit since my husband doesn't care for tea and I've never thought dry, cold scones were worth eating. Were we ever wrong! The visit with Karen (Fosse Farmhouse BnB) was something we couldn't have expected. What a charming woman. And her homemade jam and scones were soft, moist and obviously very fresh. He met us outside of London and took us to Bath. In Bath, he took us on a Bath half day tour which we learned so much about the city. He told fun stories (a great story teller) and kept both of our teens entertained without information overload. Plus, the adults enjoyed his company and learned a lot from him too. On the final day, we did the South Cotswolds Tour for a full day. He drove us to many pretty villages and gave us the country feel we were looking for. He took us to villages that not every tourist gets to see and brought along audiovisuals to relate the scenery to other places, movies and songs. He even on the last day drove our kids to 2 shops right before closing time so they could buy one last souvenir. As an example of the extra mile Dan is willing to go, we were touring a property outside in London on the day we were supposed to meet up with Dan. I realized mid-tour, I had left all of our passports back in the room in London after we had checked out. Dan took a detour on his way to pick us up and had our passports in hand. AMAZING. Crisis averted. He did it with a smile. Thanks, Dan, for 3 great days. I hope our paths cross again!! Read more Written 29 March 2024

Funding boost to develop £4bn Bristol underground network

02 Nov, 2022 By Thomas Johnson

In his second to last address the Bristol city mayor has pledged an extra £15M to develop proposals towards building a £4bn underground and overground network in the city.

Mayor Marvin Rees announced the council commitment in his final State of the City address before power moves to a committee system and the role of mayor is dispensed with.

Under the proposal, four underground and overground routes would connect the city centre with Bristol Airport, Cribbs Causeway, Emersons Green and the A4 corridor towards Bath, with various stops in the middle.

Rees said: "We are about to commit a further £15M with our neighbours to take this work to the next stage.

"Overground and underground networks are fast, efficient, low-carbon transport systems. They are essential for a modern, crowded city.

"There cannot be any U-turns, no shying away from the challenge of delivery for those who come next, be they Bristol councillors or the combined authority."

He further stated "Bristolians have waited long enough" before discussing the “decaying” infrastructure of the city he had inherited in 2016 when he became mayor.

Rees added: “From the crumbling harbour wall, to a collapsing Chocolate Path to at least eight bridges with structural flaws, the city we have inherited is one in which so much is at end of life."

He further stated £18M would be used to repair the bridges; Redcliffe, Prince Street, Gaol Ferry, Sparke Evans, Bath and Bedminster bridges, Langton Street, Vauxhall and Avon.

As well as the underground network, the full transit system also includes:

  • A park and ride on the M32, with segregated bus lanes running to and from the city
  • A clockwise bus loop around the city, taking buses out of the city centre
  • Ensuring all buses run on green bio-gas around the city
  • New bus stops around the city
  • New railway stations at Henbury, Portway and Ashleigh Down
  • A feasibility study into a new station at St Anne's, along with possible stations at Lockleaze and Ashton Gate

What to keep in mind when choosing a guided tour of the Colosseum’s Underground

In my opinion, when planning your visit to the Colosseum’s Underground, it’s important to consider several factors to make the most of your experience:

1. Booking in Advance:

To secure your spot and avoid disappointment, I recommend booking your chosen Colosseum Underground tour well in advance. Especially during peak tourist seasons, these tours tend to sell out quickly. By planning ahead, you can ensure that your desired date and time are available.

2. Tour Availability and Timing:

Check the current tour schedules and available days to ensure they align with your visit to Rome. I suggest monitoring your emails for correspondence from the tour company in the lead up to your tour, as peak seasons may lead to unexpected adjustments in tour timing. Proactive communication can help avoid last-minute changes from spoiling your visit.

3. Group Combining:

Inside the Colosseum, tour guides are often hired directly by the site when it comes to the underground portion, and the tour companies may not have full control over this aspect.

Be prepared for the possibility of smaller groups from different tours being combined if their entry times overlap and the fact that you might have a different guide for the underground portion of your tour.

4. Manage Expectations:

When reading tour reviews, you may encounter both positive and negative feedback. It’s important to manage your expectations by thoroughly reviewing the tour details and to take some of the negative feedback with a pinch of salt – sometimes, the customer is wrong.

Understanding what’s included in the tour and being aware that negative reviews may result from misunderstandings or communication challenges will help guide your choice of tour.

5. Additional Monument Visits:

Some Colosseum Underground tours may include visits to other historic monuments in Rome. While planning your itinerary, consider whether you’d like to explore these additional sites. This can add depth to your Roman adventure and provide a well-rounded historical experience.

Best Colosseum Underground Tours: What you need to know

If you’re considering exploring the Colosseum’s underground, you probably have a few questions in mind. Here, I’ll address some common queries to help you plan your visit effectively:

What is the best Colosseum underground tour?

Two of the best Colosseum Underground tours include the VIP Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill and the Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour. Both provide immersive experiences with knowledgeable guides that are part of extremely reputable tour companies.

Is it worth doing the underground Colosseum tour?

It’s most definitely worth doing the underground Colosseum tour – in fact, the underground is my favourite part of the Colosseum! The underground tour takes you beneath the Colosseum’s surface, offering a glimpse into its hidden chambers and passages. You’ll walk in the footsteps of gladiators and explore areas typically off-limits to the public. It’s a fascinating journey into ancient Roman history and architecture, making it well worth the experience.

Is it worth seeing the Colosseum arena floor?

Yes, visiting the Colosseum’s arena floor is highly worth it. Stepping onto the same stage where gladiatorial contests took place and enjoying panoramic views of the amphitheatre is a memorable experience. It provides a unique perspective of the Colosseum’s grandeur and historical significance.

The duration of Colosseum Underground tours can vary. On average, these tours last around 1.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the specific tour you choose. Be sure to check the tour details for the exact duration when booking.

What is the difference between the Colosseum Underground and the Arena?

The Colosseum underground refers to the hidden chambers and passageways beneath the arena. It includes areas where gladiators prepared for battle and where animals were kept. The Colosseum arena is the stage itself, where the gladiatorial contests and other events took place. Tours often provide access to both areas, allowing you to explore the complete Colosseum experience.

Can you see the Colosseum underground without a tour?

No, you cannot see the Colosseum underground with a tour – access to both the underground and arena floor is typically only available through guided tours. These tours provide exclusive entry to restricted areas, ensuring a comprehensive and informative visit.
