Electric Bike

An electric bike is available on request. A supplement applies, see below. Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are designed to make cycling easier. The pedaling ‘boost’ provided by an e-bike opens up more options, allowing people of different fitness levels to cycle together or for cyclists to take on routes they may otherwise consider too tough for their current fitness capabilities. Please note that e-bikes are heavier than normal bikes and given the higher speed possible, should only be ridden by confident cyclists. Minimum age for e-bike rental is 12 years and a minimum height requirement is 150cm / 4ft9in.

moderate

This trip involves 3 days cycling usually along backroads with minimal car traffic (although some short distances will have heavier traffic). The cycling distance is from 43 to 65km / 27 to 40.5mi per day over often hilly terrain, which should take between 3-6 hours. You need only carry your camera and water bottle etc. This trip requires a good level of fitness. *For safety reasons, we highly recommend that cycle helmets are worn – these will be provided to you with your bike.

The 22 km Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes is one of the most scenic bike rides we have ever done. Follow my guide to help you plan out your own DIY bike tour.

Book your bike rental at Bourgogne Evasion in Beaune.

With 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor, they are the go-to company for bike rentals in Beaune and Dijon.

They were very quick to respond to my inquiries and gave me great suggestions on planning my route. I loved that they had our bikes ready at opening time, and we were able to get biking right away.

Bourgogne Evasion bike rental shop

You have the option to choose from a hybrid bike (20€/day), E-Bike (45€/day), or a road bike (50€/day).

My husband bikes frequently and would have chosen a hybrid bike. However, I knew there were some hills involved and I wanted this to be a very relaxed experience, so I convinced him to get E-bikes.

I have no regrets.

The E-bikes were a blast and also ensured we made it to our wine tastings if we were running a little behind.

E-bikes used on our Burgundy bike tour

Important to note as you select your bike is the bike trail is all paved. There are only a few sections where you have to cross a main road.

The total distance of the Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes is 22 km (13.6 miles), but we did an extra section along the canal from Chagny.

Our total distance came to 30 km (18.9 miles).

If you do not want to do the bike tour on your own, Bourgogne Evasion also offers half-day and full-day group tours .

There are pros and cons to doing a group tour.

One perk of choosing a group tour is you do not have to arrange lunch and wine tastings in advance and worry about being late. It’s all taken care of for you.

One disadvantage to a group tour is you do not experience the full bike route and the extra scenic section along the canal to Chagny.

Also, there’s also not as much flexibility on stopping points. Since we did the bike tour on our own, I could choose when I wanted to suddenly stop and take a photo or spend more time in one town vs. the other.

But this “freedom” also meant we had to arrange wine tastings on our own and had to make sure we were on time, so there was a little more pressure.

If you choose to do a guided bike tour, Get Your Guide offers several highly-rated tours as noted below.

My husband made a map of our Burgundy bike tour using the AllTrails app.

We started using AllTrails several years ago because we hike quite a bit. You can download hiking and biking routes offline, which helps you stay on track. It’s the best $35.99/yr we have ever spent!

Our Burgundy bike tour as seen on AllTrails

In summary, we rented our bikes in Beaune, took the train to Chagny, biked along the canal to Santenay, and then biked our way back up to Beaune via the wine villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Volnay, and Pommard.

Refer back to this map as you read through my guide to make sense of the route.

The answer to this question DEPENDS on which wineries and lunch place you choose.

We originally wanted to bike from Beaune to Pommard for our first wine tasting at 10 am, cycle through all the wine villages to Chagny, take the train from Chagny back to Beaune, and then have our last wine tasting in Beaune.

However, we arrived in Burgundy during harvest season.

This is an incredibly exciting time, but it does make it very difficult to schedule wine tastings since everyone is busy. The winery in Pommard could only do our visit + tasting in the afternoon, so we altered our schedule.

Our new schedule required us to take the train to Chagny first and bike our way back up to Pommard and Beaune to make it to the afternoon tastings.

Chagny train station

If you haven’t already, go to the Trainline mobile website .

The best resource we used in France!

It gives you all the train times and platforms to be on. Plus, you can book your tickets directly from the site (all in English!).

The earliest we could pick the bikes up was at 9 am. It takes about 10 minutes to bike from Bourgogne Evasion bike rental shop to the train station in Beaune.

We took the 10:02 am train from Beaune to Chagny. It’s only an 8-10 minute train ride. This local train allows bikes.

Booking a train ticket from Beaune to Chagny

WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ NEXT IS SUPER IMPORTANT.

If you choose a hybrid or road bike, then you will have no problem getting the bike on and off the train.

However, if you have an E-bike, you will need a little muscle because those E-bikes are HEAVY. It’s like having a mini-motorcycle.

The train station does have little ramps on the side to push your bike up to the platform, but my 5’2” frame could not do it. Luckily, I have a super strong husband, who easily navigated my bike for me.

Then once you have the bike on the platform, choose the train cabin that has the bike symbol on the outside.

Bike cabin on train from Beaune to Chagny France

The bike cabin has hooks to hang your bike on. The E-bikes are super heavy and really require strength to position them vertically on the hooks.

I could not physically hang the bike, but the hubby could.

E-bikes on the train from Beaune to Chagny, France

We left our charming boutique hotel La Maison de Pommard and picked up our bikes at Bourgogne Evasion promptly at 9 am. There is a huge parking lot to leave your car.

Easy breezy.

We were doing the full bike route and we had two wine tastings lined up, so we knew we wouldn’t have time for a full sit-down lunch.

Instead, we decided to do a picnic lunch.

Before we got on the train to Chagny, we stopped by the cheese shop of Alain Hess .

If you read any of my blog posts, you will notice a running theme of our travels. We love delicious food & wine, and we love to be outdoors.

So, of course, we had to pick up the famous Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese from the creator himself, Monsieur Alain Hess.

Beautiful cheeses from Alain Hess in Beaune, France

This delicious creamy cow’s milk cheese is surrounded by mustard seeds, giving it a hint of spice. Although they did not have bread, they did have some crackers which were perfect for scooping up the cheese.

We also purchased some saucisson (dry-cured sausages) to pair with our meal.

The staff was super friendly and helpful in selecting our food products.

Alternatively, if you are doing a shorter bike route and not many wine tastings, you may want to have a nice sit-down lunch.

While we were still in the planning stages, we narrowed our choices down to two restaurants: Le Bistro d’Olivier and Le Montrachet .  Both are located in the town of Puligny-Montrachet.

We purchased our train tickets through the Trainline app .

After an ungraceful attempt at lugging the E-bikes onto the train, we were off! 10 minutes later we arrived in Chagny.

Note: If you decide to start the bike tour from Beaune instead of Chagny, the Bourgogne Evasion bike shop is right next to the entrance of the trail (a 3-minute bike ride).

Super convenient.

Entrance to Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes in Beaune (right next to the bike shop)

This section of the trail was gorgeous.

It was flat and made for a very easy, relaxing ride. The bike trail snaked along the river with very picturesque views seen along the way.

Riding bikes along the canal route from Chagny, France to Santenay

Santenay was a cute little town with a central water fountain in the center surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements.

Santenay, France

We pressed on and very shortly found ourselves SURROUNDED by endless vineyards and beautiful chateaus.

My husband and I just happened to come during the start of the harvest season, which was very exciting to witness. As we biked around, we saw all the pickers gathering the grapes.

Santenay vineyards

By the way, it is hard to get lost except in the little wine villages.

Sometimes you have to look around for a bit to find the bike symbol sign.

Always follow the green veloroute sign as seen below.

Follow the green veloroute signs during your Burgundy bike tour

As we entered Chassagne-Montrachet, we approached a cute little church and then the grand Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet.

Although we did not do a wine tasting here, the Chateau offers several great wine-tasting packages .

If you do a group full-day tour with Bourgogne Evasion , this is one of the wineries they take you to.

Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet

The surrounding vineyards are gorgeous. We stopped for a lot of photos in this area.

Vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet

Once you arrive at Puligny-Montrachet, the town has a fun roundabout to ride around a few times.

When we were there during harvest season, we had the pleasure of watching the harvest workers celebrating the end of the season by driving around the circle honking and sending out flares.

The excitement was contagious!

We also saw this cool art feature of a cork butterfly as we left the town.

Cork butterfly in Puligny-Montrachet

The wine village of Meursault was my favorite!

Incredibly charming and picturesque. We decided to stop here for our picnic lunch of crackers, Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese, and saucisson.

Oh, how I love France! All the simple pleasures in life.

If you love cheese, don’t miss my full review of our cheese-tasting class in Paris.

Enjoying saucisson during our picnic lunch in Meursault, France

There’s a beautiful fountain in the town square with a few benches to enjoy your lunch.

Charming town of Meursault, France

After you are done eating, there is a public restroom near the fountain to wash up before you continue the home stretch of your bike ride.

Meursault, France

There was not much to see in the town of Volnay. We cycled through pretty quickly. The surrounding vineyards were beautiful.

We stopped for a few photos in front of this beautiful chateau situated among the vineyards in Volnay before we reached Pommard.

Volnay vineyards

The bike ride to Pommard did not take long, and we arrived around 1:30 PM.

We were actually staying at La Maison de Pommard right in town.

Since we were a little early for our first wine tasting, we relaxed on the veranda of our beautiful boutique hotel until it was time.

My husband and I loved our visit to Domaine Lejeune  in the charming town of Pommard.

The staff was super kind to even host us during their busy harvest season. It was incredible to witness the excitement and watch the ladies de-stem the grapes and prepare the juice for the fermentation process.

Harvest time at Domaine Lejeune

One of the staff members showed us around the property, and then we were led down to the cellar for a private tasting of six lovely wines (15€/person).

Reserve in advance!

Wine tasting at Domaine Lejeune

My husband and I cycled the last stretch of our Burgundy bike tour and arrived in Beaune around 3:30 pm.

After dropping our bikes off, we walked 10 minutes over to Joseph Drouhin for our final wine tasting.

Biking on the Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes towards Beaune

If you love wine, please read Wine and War .

When visiting the underground cellars of Joseph Drouhin , you will have a much better context.

Underground cellar of Joseph Drouhin

It was pretty cool to know we were actually walking underneath the streets of Beaune as we were shown around the underground cellars.

In the end, we enjoyed an excellent wine tasting of three whites and three reds from Joseph Drouhin.

No grand crus, but we were able to taste a few premier crus.

Joseph Drouhin wine tasting

Had we not had extra time, we would have dropped our bikes off after our wine tasting at Joseph Drouhin.

The bike shop closes at 6 pm. Since we were running on time, we were able to complete this step before our last wine tasting.

After Joseph Drouhin, we visited the Hospices de Beaune and then drove back to our hotel in Pommard.

Hospices de Beaune

Here is a summary of the time it took us to cycle between wine villages.

Now realize this time includes stopping for MULTIPLE photos, and we were riding on E-bikes. Although this was a relatively easy ride, I was still thankful for my padded bike shorts .

  • Chagny to Santenay: 25 minutes
  • Santenay to Chassagne-Montrachet: 30 minutes

On a Burgundy Self-Guided Bike Tour

Imagine pedaling softly on a crisp fall morning, the sun beginning to warm the day, with nothing but the sound of your bike's wheels on a smooth path and the breathtaking scenery of Burgundy's vineyards around you. This isn't just a daydream; it's the reality our guest, Howard Kantoff, lived during his self-guided bike tour in one of France's most renowned wine regions.

Howard, an avid cyclist but not quite the Tour de France aspirant, shares with us the ins and outs of organizing a solo bike tour that led him through charming historic villages, alongside tranquil canals, and, most enticingly, through the serene paths that cut across rolling vineyards. This journey wasn't merely about covering distances; it was an exploration of the richness of French culture, history, and gastronomy, all while pedaling at his own pace.

Burgundy: A Great Area for Cycling

Our story begins in late September, chosen strategically for its temperate climate and the vibrant hues of early fall. Howard starts his adventure in Dijon, a city chosen for its practical amenities like bike rentals but quickly veers off into the countryside, where the real heart of Burgundy reveals itself. Through meticulous planning and a bit of serendipity, he navigates through landscapes that seem ripped from a storybook, where every turn brings a new vista or a quaint village square waiting to be explored.

Cycling Amenities

This was a self-guided solo itinerant bike trip through Burgundy. Howard realized that Burgundy has some of everything. Some challenging hills, but also a lot of beautiful scenery and great food. He started in Dijon and rented a bike from Bourgogne Evasion. Another great ressource was Velo Tourisme de France a lot to plan his trip. He started in Dijon and ended in Besançon. Along the way, Howard also discovered how easy it was to take a bike on the train.

His journey underscores a crucial message for all travelers: the road may bring surprises, but with a spirit of adventure, each challenge is just another part of the story.

The Road Less Traveled in Burgundy

Join us as Howard shares the highs and lows, the unexpected challenges, and the moments of sheer bliss he encountered on his journey. After he finished his self-guided bike trip he went back with his wife in a car and loved that as well. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or someone who enjoys a leisurely ride through the park, there's inspiration to be found in taking the road less traveled, especially when that road winds through the heart of French wine country.

So, grab your helmet and your sense of adventure, and let's dive into the world of biking through Burgundy, where every pedal brings a new discovery, and every sunset promises a fine glass of wine to toast the day’s journey. This is more than just a bike tour; it's an invitation to explore, to taste, and to experience the unparalleled beauty of France in a way that few do- at the speed of bike.

Accommodation: 3-star hotel, B&B, or guesthouse

Macon city, France

After a hearty breakfast, leave Mâcon via the Voie Bleue path. It follows the Saône river to Fleurville and the historic castles of Marigny and Marfontaine. Quiet roads and paths will lead you to the beautiful Tournus, a town dating back to the Romans. The city is wonderful to explore on foot, as you can take in the unique atmosphere of its quiet streets and traboules (hidden passages that cross buildings and connect streets to each other). The Romanesque Church of St. Philibert is also a must-see!

Distance: 40 km / 25 miles Accommodation: 4-star hotel, B&B, or guesthouse Meals: Breakfast

St Phillibert Abbey in Tournus

Start your day by cycling along the Saône river before moving away from the calm waters to pass through Gigny. You’ll ride through the flood plain between the Saône and Grosne once you exit the town. Pedal some more and you’ll come to Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, where the inventor of photography, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, lived. Once at St Rémy, you’ll get back to the bank of the Saône river until you reach Chalon-sur-Saône for the night. This beautiful town presents a great opportunity for an evening stroll, either along the river or through the heart of the town filled with medieval houses and a cathedral.

Distance: 30 km / 18.6 miles Accommodation: 4-star hotel, B&B, or guesthouse Meals: Breakfast

Summer streets of Chalon-sur-Saone

Get ready for the longest day of your journey! Follow the Voie Verte cycling path northwest towards Givry. Continue the journey towards southwest, and you’ll end up in the enchanting fortified town of Buxy, nestled amidst picturesque vineyards of Cote Chalonnaise in the Burgundy region. Here is where you’ll find the wine appellations like Mercurey and Givry.

The path through this celebrated vineyard landscape will soon lead you through the historic towns of St. Boll and St. Gengoux le National, marked by their medieval charm. Next up is Cormatin, where you can explore a magnificent 17th-century castle, an intricate maze, and an ancient vegetable garden. The Voie Verte then takes you to Taize (a monastic community) and to the beautiful Benedictine abbey of Cluny, built in 910. Back in 1080, it was considered the most important monastic complex of Christianity.

Distance: 52 km / 32.3 miles Accommodation: 3-star hotel, B&B, or guesthouse Meals: Breakfast

Cote Chalonnaise

Use your morning to explore Cluny if you haven’t had the chance the day before—it’s a lovely town with a world-famous abbey. Today’s ride will let you immerse yourself in the poetic romanticism of Alphonse de Lamartine—he spent his formative years amidst these captivating landscapes, where the harmonious blend of natures, clastles, and monuments undoubtedly left an imprint on his literary works.

Along the way you will cross the longest cycling tunnel in Europe, which leads to the castle of Berzé le Chatel. An ascent here will reward you with a wonderful view over the Mâconnais vineyard district. Enjoy your final evening of the tour in Mâcon.

Distance: 28 km / 17.4 miles Accommodation: 3-star hotel, B&B, or guesthouse Meals: Breakfast

Cluny Abbey in Burgundy

Once you’re done with a hearty breakfast at your hotel, it’s time to check out and leave. Depart home or feel free to ask your guiding company for further recommendations in the area!

Grand Angle

Interesting circuit with its route on the blue lane along the banks of the Saône, on small country roads and the green lane (former railway line) on the return, passing through the towns with a rich past of Mâcon, Tournus, Chalon and Cluny and through other more small but worth the detour. Well created. Good balance between routes along the river, small roads and cultural visits. Route on greenway (Railway)

I really appreciated Grand Angle, a warm, smiling team and above all really attentive to my desires. This is the ideal place to find the trip that suits everyone, I recommend! 🙂

Cycle at your own pace, stop whenever you want to, and marvel at serene landscapes surrounding you as long as you’d like.

Prior to the start of the Burgundy bike tour, you will receive a digital travel pack with documents sent by email (in German, French, or English) as well as access to your phone travel app for routes and maps. The app is in English only. If you wish to have a printed version with you (with paper roadbook in German, French, or English + maps), let us know upon booking (there is an additional cost). The printed travel pack will be given to you at the first accommodation of the tour.

If you join this Burgundy bike tour, you can expect easy to moderate cycling. You will mostly follow walking/cycling paths on an old railway, rolling hills, and shared-use lanes on quiet roads.

Daily distances will range between 28 and 52 km (17.5-32 miles) with easy to moderate ascents in elevation throughout the rides.

Please no cotton hiking or cycling clothing! Synthetic clothing is very efficient in drying quickly. Merino wool material clothing is also efficient in drying quickly, it’s comfortable to wear, and has the advantage of not developing a bad odor after use.

Clothing checklist (required for the trip, think layers!)

  • Cycling shoes
  • Socks — one pair for every day or two days of the trip (sport specific padded socks, no cotton please)
  • Sun hat — wide brimmed hat or baseball cap/bandana combo
  • Cycling gloves — padded gloves used specifically for cycling
  • Cycling shirts — non-cotton, breathable short sleeve and/or long sleeve shirts (note: long sleeve shirts
  • provide better sun protection)
  • Cycling pants & shorts — nylon pants AND shorts, zip-offs or leggings
  • Windbreaker layer — a lightweight wind resistant jacket or pullover
  • Warm top — mid-weight sweater or pullover of wicking material such as merino wool, fleece or polypropylene
  • Insulating jacket — down-fill or synthetic-fill insulated “puffy” jacket or warm, lightweight fleece jacket (may not be needed in summer months)
  • Rain gear – waterproof jacket and pants or high-quality poncho, breathable fabric such as Gore-Tex® or coated nylon (for the pants look for side zippers that will easily allow pulling them over footwear)
  • Casual clothing & footwear — comfortable clothes and shoes to wear in the evening after activities.

Gear checklist

  • Saddlebag — if choosing to use a rental bike on this trip, a saddlebag is included with rental
  • Personal Luggage — small duffel bag, suitcase or backpack (for extra items and casual clothes)
  • Cycling helmet — ( mandatory ) comfortable fitting, with rain cover (if choosing to use a rental bike on this trip, a helmet is included with the rental)
  • Hydration System — 2+ liters capacity, either water bottles or bladder/hose system (if planning to wear a backpack during cycling) and an additional water bottle
  • Headlamp — preferably with an L.E.D. bulb that works with AA or AAA batteries
  • Picnic / lunch kit — knife, plate or bowl, box with closeable lid, utensils, etc.
  • Phone & charger – local sim card or international plan may be needed. Consider bringing a small power bank to use to recharge devices during trip activities.
  • Map or phone holder — for handlebars, included with bike rentals
  • Waterproof travel case or pouch – used to keep important documents (i.e. passport, health/travel insurance, etc…) & phone safe from weather/water
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, & lip balm
  • First aid kit — see first aid kit suggestions below
  • Personal toilet paper kit (toilet paper, wet wipes, sanitizer, sealable plastic bags) — it’s always good to be prepared as there may be the need to use natural settings for toilets (i.e. digging catholes, etc.)
  • Contact lenses & glasses
  • Prescription medication
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Money — good to have some local currency in cash

Optional items

  • Backpack — a small-sized pack with a waterproof cover (useful to carry your belongings, if your bike has a rack system this bag can easily be attached or even packed within a saddlebag)
  • Travel power adapter — electric power voltage in France is 230 V / 50 Hz and the plugs are E type
  • Support braces — consider bringing any joint braces that may be currently needed or from past injuries
  • Sleep mask & ear plugs
  • Bug repellant
  • Quick drying towel or bandanas

First aid kit Anything can happen and it’s best to carry your own personal first aid kit. What you need may not be available in the destination you are visiting, so we recommend being well prepared. Here’s a basic list of what makes a good personal travel first aid kit:

  • Prescription medication (with back-up doses, keep it in your carry-on)
  • Epinephrine (EpiPen) if you have any severe allergies
  • Pain relief
  • Antihistamine
  • Non-drowsy allergy relief (Loratadine, comparable to Claritin)
  • Antacid / heartburn relief (Bismuth, comparable to Pepto-Bismol, Antacid)
  • Anti-diarrhea medication
  • Cold / flu medicine
  • Electrolyte replacement / drink mix
  • Creams (antibiotic ointment, anti-itch, hydrocortisone, arnica)
  • Blister care
  • Other various items — athletic tape, nail clippers, tweezers, sewing kit…

Indeed you can! If you choose to rent a bike ( hybrid bikes and e-bikes offered), it will be delivered at your first hotel of the itinerary. You will be asked to give a deposit to hold during the rental. At the end of the tour, you will leave the rental bike at last night’s hotel.

All bikes are equipped with a side stand, a mudguard, a pannier rack, and lights. They also come with a bike lock, a toolkit (inner tube, pump, and basic tools), a helmet, and saddlebags.

If you choose to bring your own bike, make sure you’re aware of (flight) transport costs and that everything is working well before setting off.

You will only have to carry the essential things for the day, such as your packed lunch, water, and other personal items. For this, you will need a saddle bag (comes with the rental). If you don’t have one, bring a 30-40L backpack with a waist strap to carry what you need for the day. A small backpack is always recommended for visiting attractions along the route.

The rest of your travel luggage will be transported for you from hotel to hotel each day—it will be there in the evening. Please limit your luggage to a maximum of 20 kg / 44 lbs per person. One piece of luggage per person allowed.

Accommodation will be arranged for you, so all you’ve got to do is show up. You will be staying in double / twin bedrooms in B&B, in 3-star and 4-star hotels or in guesthouses with the same level of comfort. Single rooms are subject to availability and require a supplement fee.

Please note that in Europe, more and more hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses are refusing to take part in the star-rating system. This doesn’t mean that they are of a lesser quality, in fact far from it. If your guiding company indicates that an accommodation is ‘3-star or equivalent to’, this means that the establishment may have chosen not to receive an official classification, but they believe the level of comfort provided is equal to that of a traditional 3-star establishment.

If you are interested in exploring Burgundy’s famous vineyards and tasting delicious, authentic wine, then this guide will provide a basis for how to plan your visit to Burgundy. We’ll also give you information regarding what to expect while tasting French wines.

A trip to explore Burgundy, France’s wine region is a chance to discover a world-renowned wine growing area, producing some of the best wines in the world. For centuries, the vineyards of Burgundy have produced some of France’s finest and most complex Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. If you are seeking an unforgettable experience tasting unique French wines and visiting charming villages surrounded by lush vineyards, then Burgundy is one of the best wine tasting destinations in France for you.

About Burgundy wine tours & wine tasting in France

The vineyards of Burgundy have been producing some of France's finest and most complex wines since the 12th century, thanks to the region’s unique soil composition and climate. For centuries, Burgundy has been known for its amazing Pinot Noir reds and Chardonnays whites, but it also produces other types of wines including rosés, Riesling, and sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne (a sparkling red wine).

Burgundy is located in western France along its namesake river which flows from Switzerland through Germany before emptying into the North Sea at Rotterdam. This geographical feature makes Burgundy a very diverse region with lots of different types of vineyards located at different altitudes throughout all four seasons. Each season brings new challenges for grape growers but also provides unique opportunities depending on what kind of grapes grow best under each particular climate type.

Grape growers in this region tend to grow the following types of grapes:

  • Chardonnay (white).
  • Pinot Noir (red).
  • Gamay Noir (red).
  • Pinot Gris (white).

Burgundy is an amazing place to visit, with lots to see and do in nearby areas. The city of Dijon has been a regional capital since the Middle Ages and was once home to the French Parliament. As you might guess, this city is also famous for its mustard. There are great museums, palaces, gardens and historic buildings that make the Burgundy region worth visiting while you're in France. Dijon winery are also a great place to get started with burgundy wines.

While there are thousands of options for wine tours and tastings in Burgundy, Winalist hand-picks the best wineries and wine tasting experiences available that are certain to provide unparalleled wine experiences. You can choose a wine tasting experience in Bordeaux based on its price point, suitability for non-French speakers (though most wineries in Bordeaux, France don't require you to speak French), and their overall experience factor (i.e., how much fun they are).

Burgundy wine highlights:

Burgundy Wine Tasting Itineraries

Burgundy wine tasting is an excellent way to discover the Burgundy wine regions. There are many different itineraries that can be tailor-made. If you love wine tasting, be sure to visit Burgundy during your stay in France.

The region offers some truly memorable experiences and plenty of opportunities for visitors to learn more about the skills of local winemakers, either in person, at courses or at tastings at the city's various vineyards. If you're visiting the region during the harvest season (July/August), make sure your itinerary includes one last chance before you leave town: September 15 marks "Burgundy Day", which means free entry to all Burgundy cellars! To complete your itinerary, be sure to check out the 5 Must-Visit Burgundy Villages .

History of Winemaking in Burgundy, France

The history of winemaking in Burgundy, France, is full of colorful stories. The region is so rich in history and tradition that it's considered one of the most famous wine regions in the world. From its romantic past to its modern-day reputation as one of the finest places on earth to taste some of the best wines, Burgundy has been home to some truly incredible events throughout its long history.

One aspect of Burgundy's illustrious past involves its signature grape varietal known as Pinot Noir. This particular red varietal was discovered by monks during the medieval ages and has since become an integral part of many reds produced within this region. The story goes that these monks were looking for warmer climates because their original vineyards were failing due to harsh winters; however, when they arrived at what would become known as Pinot Noir country, they found success in both making wine and growing grapes.

Another interesting fact about Burgundy's winemaking history involves Chardonnay, a white varietal which also originated within this region centuries ago. This wine type popularity skyrocketed around 1962 when California started producing high quality examples using this grape type (which prompted other countries, including France itself).

There are plenty of beautiful wine routes in Burgundy. One of the most famous is the Grands Crus de Bourgogne route. The Grands Crus de Bourgogne route (from Dijon to Santenay via Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune), which crosses many vineyards and wine villages, won’t disappoint.

On your way through this route, you’re bound to find several activities, estates, and guest houses that will gladly offer you tastings and local pleasures.

If you arrive at Dijon by train, you will be right in the heart of the capital of Burgundy! Visit the gourmet shops full of traditions (mustard, gingerbread, etc.). The owl's route allows you to discover the city easily.

The surrounding villages transport you to Beaune and its famous hospice. But above all, you can take the Grands Crus de Bourgogne route (from Dijon to Santenay via Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune) which crosses the vineyard and no less than 35 wine villages.

You will find on your way a number of activities, estates and guest houses which will gladly offer you a tasting of local pleasures.

Burgundy is a beautiful place to visit year-round, but if you want to do some wine tasting in Burgundy, spring and fall are the best times of year for this activity. Spring and fall offer the most temperate climates. Summer can be extremely hot (and humid) in Burgundy especially since most vineyards are located on hillsides near rivers or streams for irrigation purposes.

So, this time of year may not boast the most pleasant weather for hiking around vineyards looking at grapes being grown. Additionally, during the winter months, some wineries close because tourists won’t travel to cold areas like this one during those months. However, some Burgundy wineries are open year-round.

Burgundy primarily produces white and red wines, along with some rosés. The most common grapes grown in Burgundy include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Auxerrois.

The white wines of the region tend to be lighter-bodied than those produced in other regions of France, such as the Chablis or Champagne region. They're often made from 100% Chardonnay grapes that are fermented separately from their skins first before being blended together later on in the process. The resulting product is a fragrant but dry wine with hints of citrus fruit flavors like grapefruit and lemon peel alongside notes of caramelized sugar or honeyed sweetness.

Red Burgundies tend toward earthier flavors than their counterparts made elsewhere throughout France because they spend time fermenting inside large oak barrels before being bottled.

The terrain is slightly hilly. You will encounter a short incline from time to time. With an e-bike and some cycling experience you should easily be able to handle this level. Daily distances span 30-65 km.

Wine

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

Arrival in Beaune, the unmistakable wine capital of Burgundy. If you have time left after your check-in then visit the artistic and historic heritage of the town, such as the impressive “Hospices de Beaune”. Be sure to pay a visit to the wine museum.

This route crosses the well-known wine region 'Côte de Nuits'. Here the dominant grape in the vineyards is the Pinot Noir, from which the splendid red Burgundy is made. You pass the world-famous Chateau Clos du Vougeot and overlook the rolling vineyards producing one of the most expensive wines of the world: Romanée Conti.

At the end of your day, before returning to Beaune, you can take advantage of a detour to discover the historic castle of Château Savigny-les-Beaune.

Challenge : 57.7 km, 466m ascent, 467m descent

A nice relaxed trip through the “Côte de Beaune” where prestigious, white wines like Meursault and Montrachet are made from the white Chardonnay grapes.

Today we propose an itinerary which traverses the famous wine villages of Pommard, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet on an easy route with many changes of scenery, to the small town of Nolay, and its impressive market building next to church. From Nolay, you will follow a pleasant cycling path using a former railway. Arrival at Chassey-le-Camp at the heart of the small valley.

Challenge : 43.6 km, 573m ascent, 479m descent

Today on the “Voie Verte” – a former railway track - you cycle among undulating vineyards of the considerably less prestigious wine region “Côte Chalonnaise”. Visit, on you way, the castle of Rully, and maybe take a break at a local winegrower to taste some red Mercurey. Before the end of your cycling day, pedal through the vineyards via Buxy, a typical medieval town.

Challenge : 42.7 km, 389m ascent, 467m descent

Continuing along the “Voie Verte” today you can admire the beautiful landscapes of southern Burgundy. The treasures you will find along the route include the Chateau de Cormatin and its gardens, unique in France for its exceptionally well-preserved interiors from the reign of Louis 13th (1628).

You end the day in the beautiful town of Cluny, known for its prominent town ramparts and Roman Abbey founded in the 10th century.

Challenge : 27.4 km, 201m ascent, 193m descent

Rather quickly the terrain becomes somewhat hillier and you reach Europe’s longest underpass(disused railway tunnel). On the other side is the majestic fortress Berzé-le-Châtel, surrounded by “Mâconnais” vineyards. In Mâcon you cross the beautiful bridge Saint Laurent and you follow the route on the “Voie Bleue” along the banks of the Sâone. You pass charming villages built around typical Roman churches and eventually you reach medieval Tournus.

Challenge : 59.5 km, 331m ascent, 393m descent

After breakfast, end of your cycling trip. Some time left? Walk through the historic centre of Tournus before taking the train back to Beaune.

All accommodations are carefully selected for their location, atmosphere and/or unique services.

We choose comfortable 3/4* hotels or B&Bs where all rooms have private en-suite bathrooms and every morning breakfasts are included.

If you don’t bring your own, you can rent a bicycle (hybrid or ebike) from us. You will find your rental bikes waiting for you at your first hotel. The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.  The frame and saddle height are set to your height, although you might want to adjust your saddle to be in the most comfortable position. We also recommend doing a first small test drive of couple of hundred meters to be comfortable with gears, brakes etc. If you have an issue with your bike, you can contact the service provider (name of bike rental in your reservation) directly. Or you can always call us on our emergency phone number.   Our hybrid touring bikes are at least 21-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below. Experience the advantages of an electric bike on your cycling holiday, particularly when there's a significant gap in ability and experience among cyclists. An e-bike provides a gentle boost up hills, allowing you to easily keep pace with your companions. With a small electric motor and battery, e-bikes make bike trips more achievable, and their batteries can be conveniently charged at hotels. While you still need to pedal, the e-bike significantly reduces the effort required. Familiarity with e-bikes is advised due to their quicker acceleration and heavier build compared to regular bikes, attributed to the electric motor.

Hard to pick just one experience - great views, Chateau de Colmartin, riding through the longest cycling tunnel in Europe, but mostly the great hospitality (often totally unexpected gestures), & the delicious local foods & wines. We were amazed that 2 grapes (Pinot Noir & Chardonnay), could produce such great variety in both regions. Lastly, we loved Cassis with Cremmant & had these as apéritifs many nights before dinners.

We liked most of the hotels, all breakfasts & we loved the dinner in Chassey Le Camp (amazing!). Chassey Le Camp had a beautiful indoor pool and whirlpool (so appreciated after a day cycling in the rain). The dinner at Chassey Le Camp was AMAZING! The beautiful country estate in Saint-Boil was so amazing and the owners were wonderful. We enjoyed another beautiful dinner at their restaurant across the street (you should consider doing half-board here as well as nothing else was open in Saint-Boil, and the service and food here is also AMAZING!!!). The morning after, the proprietor told us all about their locally sourced foods & even let us try their fresh mushrooms!

Hotel in Beaune (Central Boutique Hotel), put us into the farthest possible room that was very small with a cramped bathroom (door even hit the toilet! Toilet didnt even fit in the bathroom!). Considering we were staying 3 nights here, we felt they could have given us a better room.

The 2 replacement hotels in Cluny & Tournus were wonderful!! Cathy at Hotel Port D’Honneur baked us a homemade Cassis gateau the morning of our breakfast(!!), & what we didnt eat for breakfast, she packaged up and sent with us on our journey. She is amazing and so is her cake!! Stephane at the hotel in Tournus (Jardin de Saone), was so wonderful, he brought us 2 free Belgium beers right to our room after he saw us all sweaty on our bikes after 60km cycle that day. His hotel was also wonderful with a logely sitting area outside the room and free Netflix. His breakfast was also wonderful. He gave us a drive to the train station in the morning to catch our train to Lyon.

Here’s Why Provence, France is a Must-See Cycling Destination

Christina c.: guided family tour in tuscany.

“Outfitters provided high-touch, personalized service when planning our guided tour to Chianti, Italy. Our guide, Bruno, was a world class rider and knew the region like his own back yard. Road support was always minutes away, whether we needed it or not. An e-bike was magically delivered to my 11-year-old daughter on day 3, when the climbs had become too difficult for her. We had wonderful service and support from Outfitters and I highly recommend them.”

Misty M.: Self-Guided in Provence & Guided in the French Alps

“WOW! WHAT AN INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE!!! Jamie and Joy Gilpin – along with their staff members – created one of the most memorable bike adventures we’ve ever experienced. My husband and I have had the very good fortune of biking all over the world, which should underscore how well planned and organized Outfitter Bicycle Tours is! Every detail was considered, from the exceptional accommodations at every turn….to the expert mechanical experience….to the enormous amount of fun and laughs we had with all who joined us. In fact, we are already planning our next bike tour with Jamie and Joy…We can’t wait! HIGHLY recommend Outfitter Bicycle Tours!!”

Dale A.: Self Guided Tour in Provence

“We did a relaxed bike tour around Provence, France. It was fantastic! OBT and Jamie had everything organized for us. Our self-guided tour was well mapped out, and we were able to cycle at our leisure and take in the spectacular landscape. We stopped along the way and soaked in the beautiful French countryside. We were warmly welcomed at the hotels and inns that OBT organized for our tour. We had a ‘concierge’ who was very knowledgeable, spoke English fluently, and was available to us daily. We loved our bicycle tour….I wish it could have gone on longer. I highly recommend OBT for any bicycle tour. OBT is very accommodating, responsive and attentive; it was very easy to plan a trip with Jamie. Thanks for a memorable vacation OBT!”

Thank you for a great trip. It might have been my favorite in Europe ever. It was totally trip that I wanted. Lars went above and beyond!

Will W.: Custom Self Guided Tour

We had one of the trips of a lifetime organized by Outfitter. We had originally planned to organize the trip ourselves, but we were SO glad we chose Outfitter. They planned great days of riding, put us up in charming hotels with great food, and took care of all the hassles of pickups and baggage transport, etc. We could not have been happier with our trip and will definitely use them for our next one!

Veronique M.: Self Guided

It was amazing! It was well organized and Bruno did a very good job. He is a nice guy, we really enjoy our trip. The hotels were great, cities and routes were very very nice. Thank you, we have really enjoyed our vacation by bike!

Dwayne H.: Custom Self Guided Tour

“Fantastic tour. The routes were all exceptionally well planned…. If you want to have a great, well planned, supported bike adventure, look no further. We changed to this company at the last minute. Great decision.”

Geoff Harris: Guided TdF Tour

I always had an idea that I wanted to go see the Tour de France once in my life. Well, I have now gone on three TdF trips with Outfitter Bicycle Tours as the experience was that good. Jamie and Joy’s low key, friendly and flexible approach made riding in the Alps an amazing experience. They did a great job of helping me determine what would maximize my experience. If I wanted an easier day, they had a suggestion to make that happen. If I wanted to try a different climb than the “recommended” route, they were able to help me make that happen. Support was great and they were there when we really needed help when we got caught in bad weather. Accommodations can be a bit tricky in the Alps during the tour, but we always stayed in lovely places that had good to great food. Overall, one of the best values you gan get for your cycling tour dollars.

Kyle & Gregg Caruso: Self Guided Tour

My dad and I had a great trip to Asheville, NC on a self guided tour where Jamie and his staff were excellent. Not only were they super flexible with where we wanted to ride but also very helpful in recommending best spots to eat/drink around town. They took care of all the logistics and planning and we just had to show up and ride.  Already thinking about another trip and would definitely recommend to friends.

Jodi Stolle: Self Guided Tour

It has been months since I rode through Provence with Outfitter Bicycle Tours but there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about that journey. It has inspired me to purchase my own bike and ride every week. My journeys are not quite the same but I still love to ride and it keeps me connected to where it all began in Provence.

Tours in Burgundy

Among all our France bike tours , our bike tours in Burgundy are among the prettiest. With its charming countryside, peaceful atmosphere, and pure air, the French region of Burgundy is the ideal destination for those seeking to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. It is known in particular for the famous Burgundy wines such as Chablis or Meursault, and its culinary delights. The historical city of Beaune , with its beautiful Hospice, is also worth seeing. The friendly people and laid-back atmosphere make this the perfect relaxing getaway , and the beautiful landscapes are the perfect backdrop for leisure cycling. France certainly has its share of beautiful places to visit, but perhaps none is as serene and inviting as Burgundy. If leisure and relaxation are what you are seeking, and you enjoy casually strolling or cycling through beautiful pastures and vineyards while enjoying fine wine and delicious food, then Burgundy should be first on your travel itinerary.

Enjoy life’s simple pleasures during your trip to Burgundy. While cycling towards the green hills of this peaceful region, you will be able to stop to explore the local heritage sites, or visit one of the many vineyards and have a taste of the great Burgundy wines. The Hospices de Beaune are the must-see of your trip. This hospital founded in 1443 during the Middle Ages is easily recognizable thanks to its colorful tiled roof, typical of the local architecture. One-of-a-kind, the Hospices also own a 60 hectare wine estate, and the prestigious wine produced there is only sold at auction on the third Sunday of November. With other renowned wines such as Nuits Saint Georges, Chablis and Mersault, Burgundy is a real heaven on Earth for wine enthusiasts from all over the world. Here you can also explore the quaint atmosphere of the French countryside cycling along the Burgundy Canal just outside of Dijon. Don’t forget to have a taste of the local mustard !

REASONS TO DISCOVER BURGUNDY

A wine lover’s haven, the town of Beaune is the capital of the Burgundy wine region . It’s described as majestic, with its cobbled streets and bountiful boutiques. Beaune is known for the Hospices de Beaune , a charitable institution once used to hospitalize the poor and needy: and its colorful tiled roof recognizable from afar. Also known as the Hôtel-Dieu, it was founded in the 15th century and surrounds a beautiful inner courtyard. Nowadays, this museum is host to the annual charity wine auction. Once in Beaune, make sure to visit the “Musee des Vins de Bourgogne” (a museum dedicated to Burgundy wines), and the “Moutarderie” , which holds an interactive exhibition about mustard!

All of our  Burgundy Biking and Hiking tours  stops in the city of Beaune.

Visitors to Burgundy should not miss its historical capital , Dijon, famous for its strong mustard . With its rich history dating back to Roman times, it has evolved into a friendly town that offers a wide variety of food, culture, shopping and nightlife – something for everyone! Our food and wine tours stop in Dijon.

Château de Ancy-le-Franc

This incredible work of architecture was once described by The Marquise de Sévigné as a French building ‘in Italian dress’. A must-see for any visitor to Burgundy, the château is perfectly symmetrical and surrounds a beautiful central courtyard. The interior boasts lofty carved ceilings, Italian tiled floors, and endless decorative details. It is also home to the finest collection of mural paintings in all of France.

Cycling tours

The Burgundy countryside is the perfect atmosphere for leisure bike rides, and visitors will experience a brush with medieval history they won’t forget. Tiny villages, manor farms and millhouses, exquisite parish churches and open-air stone laundries by trickling streams are the soul of rural France and perfect for cycling vacations !

There are many festivals in Burgundy. From the Dijon Antic Fair in May to the various food and wine fairs year round, not to mention the Formula One French Grand Prix Race at Magny – in early July, there is something for everyone to enjoy! If you are in Burgundy in late June, do not miss the Blues festival in Le Creusot and if you come in November you will have the opportunity to attend Les Trois Glorieuses (a wine fair) in Beaune, the Dijon International Gastronomic Fair , or the Chablis Wine Festival ! If you come at another time of the year, there are events coming up every month!

burgundy food and wine

Burgundy is home to France’s most famous wine producing regions, and its products are known and enjoyed worldwide. Names like Beaune , Nuits-St-Georges , Chablis , and Meursault all hail from this region, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are grown extensively.

The vineyards south of Dijon divide into two distinct regions, Cote de Nuits , grouping most of the region’s prestigious reds, and Cote de Beaune , with reds only slightly less famous but still very good. Our Burgundy Bike and Hiking Tours will take you through all of the most famous vineyards.

In addition to the famous wine selection, Burgundy offers visitors delicious local foods, from traditional to gourmet. Dishes such as coq au vin (chicken cooked in wine) and beef bourguinon (beef simmered in red wine with mushrooms, small white onions and chunks of bacon) are world renowned. For a truly French culinary experience, try the snails: Escargots ! For cheese lovers, Epoisses and Soumaintrain are famous Burgundy cheeses , very rich in flavor. And of course, your Burgundy experience would not be complete without trying the famous Dijon Mustard .

burgundy geography

The hills and plains of Burgundy are located in the east-central part of France, between the Morvan and the Vosges mountains. Burgundy is well-known for its  wines , its fine  gastronomy  and also for its Roman architecture in Vezelay, Autun, and the noble ruins of Cluny. The capital of Burgundy is Dijon where the famous mustard comes from. The region is rich in wheat and barley agriculture and wines. The best-known area is the  Cote d’Or , home of the best Burgundy vineyards and the  “Route du Vin”  famous since the time of the Gallo-roman: Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos-Vougeot, Vosne-Romanee, Pommard, Meusault,…The vineyards south of Dijon divide into two distinct regions, Cote de Nuits , grouping most of the region’s prestigious reds, and  Cote de Beaune , with reds only slightly less famous but still very good. Our  Burgundy Bike and Hiking Tours  will take you through all of the most famous vineyards.

burgundy history

During the 5th century A.D., a Germanic tribe called the  Burgundians  invaded and established the first kingdom of Burgundy in France. In 534, the Burgundians were conquered by the Merovingian rulers of the Francs and became part of the Carolingian Empire. Later, the region was divided in 2: the  Duchy of Burgundy  to the west (more or less the actual Burgundy), and the Free County of Burgundy to the east. In the 15th century, the duchy of Burgundy with its court in  Dijon dominated the French court economically and culturally. The situation led to a war, which allowed France to annex the old Duchy.
