Take a Virtual Tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

Hollar_Long_View_detail

Last week, we featured a  Prize-Winning Animation of 17th Century London . In many ways, it could be paired with these  short virtual tours of the Globe Theatre . Built in 1599 by Shakespeare’s playing company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men , the original theatre hosted some of the Bard’s greatest plays until it burned down 14 years later. In 1613, during a performance of  Henry VIII , a stage cannon ignited the thatched roof and the theatre burned to the ground in less than two hours. Rebuilt with a tile roof, the theatre re-opened in 1614, and remained active until England’s Puritan administration closed all theatres in 1642. A modern reconstruction of the Globe, named “Shakespeare’s Globe,” was built in 1997, just a few feet away from the original structure. If you want to get a feel for what Shakespeare’s theatre looked like, then look no further than this virtual tour. All you need is this free Quicktime plugin for your browser  and you can take a 360 tour of the stage , the yard , the middle gallery , and the upper gallery  … all without leaving your seat.

Take a Virtual Tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

  • " onclick="window.open(this.href,'win2','status=no,toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes,titlebar=no,menubar=no,resizable=yes,width=640,height=480,directories=no,location=no'); return false;" rel="nofollow"> Print

It is mainly remembered because it was partly owned by the famous poet, actor and writer of plays, William Shakespeare.  Many of Shakespeare's plays were first performed there.

The original Globe was built in 1599, but was burnt down in 1613.   It was rebuilt in 1614, but closed in 1642.

Today, you can visit a reconstruction of the Globe, called " Shakespeare's Globe ", which is built in almost exactly the same place as the original.  It is a real theatre, and you can go there to watch Shakespeare's plays performed in the original setting.

However, not everyone can get to London.  If you can't visit in person, don't worry!  Shakespeare's Globe has an excellent free app for iPhone or iPad called Shakespeare's Globe 360.

Not only can you move around, and zoom in and out to explore, but the app contains photos, videos and interesting information about William Shakespeare and the theatre.

The ability to look at everything around you lets you feel just what it's like to be an actor standing out there on the stage.  You can also go on your own backstage tour and more. Plus, by using the app marker, you can see the Globe Theatre in 3D!

It's fascinating, educational and a lot of fun.  It really is the next best thing to actually being there.

Download the Shakespeare's Globe 360 app here

Download the app marker for 3d here.

Note for parents:   The app does contain an optional in app purchase.

Here is a video to give you an idea of what you'll experience with this app.

Shakespeare’s Globe – Take a Virtual tour

Shakespeare’s globe.

Shakespeare’s Globe is a world-renowned theatre, education centre, and cultural landmark, located on the bank of the River Thames in London, UK. “Whilst our doors are closed, we are still very much open, online, providing Shakespeare for all.”

VIRTUAL TOUR Step inside the Globe Theatre Shakespeare’s Globe is now closed to the public, but you can still tour the Globe Theatre from the comfort of your own home with our interactive 360 degrees virtual tour, with photos, videos and audio to guide you along the way.

The Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the open-air theatre built in 1599, where many of Shakespeare’s greatest plays were first performed. It is situated across the river from St Paul’s Cathedral – on the south bank of the Thames, about 170 metres from the site of the original and has been constructed using as many Elizabethan building methods as possible. Opened officially in 1997, today’s Globe is a twenty-sided wooden structure made of oak and lime-plaster – with the first thatched roof permitted in London since the Great Fire in 1666.

THE FIRST GLOBE During the first years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the English playing companies used inns, inn-yards, college halls and private houses for their performances. It was not until 1576 that the actor-manager James Burbage built the Theatre in Shoreditch, the first purpose-built playhouse in London. Shakespeare joined the resident troupe at the Theatre in the 1580s and the company (later known as the Chamberlain’s and then the King’s Men) flourished there for 20 years. In 1596 a dispute arose over the renewal of the lease and negotiations were begun to acquire a disused hall in the precincts of the old Blackfriars priory to use as an indoor theatre. James Burbage died in February 1597; in April the lease expired, but the dispute continued for two years, during which the company performed at the nearby Curtain playhouse. In Christmas 1598 the company sought a drastic solution: they leased a plot near the Rose, a rival theatre in Southwark, demolished the Theatre and carried its timbers over the river. To cover the cost of the new playhouse, James Burbage’s sons Cuthbert and Richard offered some members of the company shares in the building. Shakespeare was one of four actors who bought a share in the Globe. By early 1599 the theatre was up and running and for 14 years it thrived, presenting many of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. In 1613, during a performance of Henry VIII, wadding from a stage cannon ignited the thatched roof and the theatre burned to the ground ‘all in less than two hours, the people having enough to do to save themselves’.

REBUILDING THE GLOBE The project to rebuild Shakespeare’s Globe was initiated by the American actor, director and producer Sam Wanamaker after his first visit to London in 1949. Twenty-one years later he founded what was to become the Shakespeare Globe Trust, dedicated to the reconstruction of the theatre and the creation of an education centre and permanent exhibition. After 23 years spent tirelessly fundraising, promoting research into the appearance of the original Globe and planning the reconstruction with the Trust’s architect Theo Crosby, Sam Wanamaker died, the site having been secured, the huge undercroft structurally completed and a few timber bays of the theatre in place. Three-and-a-half years later – in 1997 – the Globe was completed.

The timber frame is made of ‘green’ oak, cut and jointed using 16th-century techniques; oak laths and staves support lime plaster mixed according to a contemporary recipe and the walls are covered in a white lime wash. The roof is made of water reed thatch. The new Globe is also designed with the 21st century in mind. An additional exit, illuminated signage, fire retardant materials and some modern backstage machinery are all concessions to our times. The reconstruction is as faithful to the original as modern scholarship and traditional craftsmanship can make it.

Add this to your Bucket List Sitting, or standing, in Shakespeare’s Globe theatre and watching one of his extraordinary plays is a wonderful experience. “I highly recommend including this on any visit to London,” says travel writer Julie Kalan. “It really is the best place to enjoy Shakespeare.” www.shakespearesglobe.com

11 Dramatic Virtual Tours of Stages Around the World

By Google Arts & Culture

A unique theatre (1769) by Antonio Bibiena Teatro Bibiena

All the world's a stage... Step inside some of the most beautiful theaters, concert halls, and opera houses in the world and experience the grandeur and drama of these iconic venues.

The Bolshoi Theater, Moscow The world-famous Bolshoi Theater in Russia was designed by architect Andrei Mikhailov and holds performances of ballet and opera on its dazzling stage. During WW2, to stop the theater from being a target for bombers, the front colonnade of the building was disguised using the set from a classic opera. Explore behind-the-scenes of its costume department, or take a tour of the exterior of the building.

Carnegie Hall, New York City A prestigious venue for both classical and popular music performances, Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan is made up of three auditoriums. There's a famous old joke that nearby the building a pedestrian stopped a musician from the venue and asked, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" Without looking up the musician replied, "Practice." Discover the origins of the building or watch a video of The Philadelphia Orchestra performing in 360.

National Theater of Korea, Seoul Opened in 1950, The National Theater of Korea was the first national theater in Asia. It houses four performance groups, including the National Changgeuk Company, which is traditional Korean opera performed as a play, but in a folk song style known as pansori. Discover more about the theater's history and performances, or watch some changgeuk.

Theatro Municipal, São Paulo Situated in Brazil, the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo is mainly constructed from materials imported from Europe, as was the custom when it was built in 1903. The stage decorations didn't arrive in time for the opening night, so its first staged production had to be postponed! Explore what happens backstage or watch a 360 video of Wagner's Lohengrin performed at the theater.

Burgtheatre, Vienna The second-oldest theater in Europe, the Burgtheatre was built in 1741 and was was largely destroyed by bombs and fire in 1945, but has since been fully restored. The extravagantly-painted ceiling of the grand staircase includes early work from Gustav Klimt, and includes his only known self-portrait. Explore the ceiling artwork in detail.

Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg One of the most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world, the Elbphilarmonie has only recently been built, and opened its doors in January 2017. The Grand Hall is designed so that the performers sit in the middle of the audience, and is walled with 10,000 individually shaped plates that disperse the sound waves. Discover how the building was created, go backstage, or watch some if its performers in 360.

The Colosseum, Rome The Colosseum might not be fully in action any longer, but in its time was the site of numerous forms of ancient Roman entertainment, from gladiatorial contests to Classic mythological dramas. Positioned in the middle of Rome, it is the largest amphitheater (open-air venue) ever built. Discover what it looks like from the outside or see a scale model of what it would have looked like when it was in use.

Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City The distinctive Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico is built in a mix of architectural styles, with Art Nouveau dominating the exterior and an Art Deco interior. The inside is decorated with artworks by prominent Mexican muralists, such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros and the stained glass "curtain" above the stage is a foldable glass panel by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Take a tour of the outside of the building.

Sydney Opera House, Sydney Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who was chosen as part of an international competition, the Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre that hosts well over 1,500 performances a year. The first person to perform at the Sydney Opera House was Paul Robeson, who sang Ol' Man River to the construction workers as they ate lunch. You can tour one of the venue's stages or discover stories about its design and events.

Teatro Bibiena, Mantua Teatro Bibiena is also known as the "scientific theater" as it was intended to host both theater productions and concerts, and scientific discourses and conventions. Designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena in 1767, a 13-year-old Mozart performed here on its opening night. Explore the painted frescoes or watch a music video filmed here.

Palais Garnier, Paris At first glance, this may not look like something that can be found at one of the most famous opera houses in the world, however you might recognize it if you've ever seen Phantom of the Opera. The Paris Opera House lake resides underneath the foundations of the grandiose building due to the marshy area in which it was built. Take a tour of the magnificent stage, see the view from the roof or watch a performance by the Paris Opera Ballet in 360.

Moscow City Center, Kremlin

The treasury of our Moscow panoramas is gradually increasing.

We have already been shooting aerial panoramas for 6 years. During this period of time we shot many interesting cities of the world: New York, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Sidney, Miami, Las Vegas, Rio de Janeiro, Dubai, Los Angeles and many others. However, we didn't succeed in shooting Moscow, the city we live in, though we did our best. The case is the flights over Moscow are forbidden except those of Russian Federation Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Response and Russian police. Taking in consideration these administrative restrictions we applied our creativity and resolved this problem by the following:

1) We made a virtual tour over Moscow Encircling Highway :  MEH and Interchanges

2) Yauza, Ramenki, Southern Port

3) In May 2010 near the Crocus-City the first in the world 1 gig pixel panorama was shot from the helicopter. It shows the Kremlin, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Novodevichiy Convent, the TV Tower of Ostankino and many other places of interest.

4) This sphere shot from the height of 1000 m which shows most part of Moscow and regions.

5) Last spring we have shot the panorama of Novodevichiy Convent

6) We have done a virtual tour over Moscow State University

7) Earlier this year we have done a fabulous panoramas of Moscow City business center

8) One of Moscow City panoramas has been converted into stereo format

9) We have created a  giga pixel panorama of the center of Moscow

Also it is worth to view one of the photos by Sergey Semenov devoted to the rehearsal of the Victory Parade of May 9.

It had success on the exhibition  World Seen by the Russians  held in Moscow, on Tverskoy Boulevard in May-June 2011.

And now we would like to introduce a virtual tour around Moscow Kremlin.
