  • Tours canceled 4 to 29 days in advance are subject to a $20 per person cancellation fee
  • Tours canceled less than 4 days in advance will be subject to a 100% cancellation fee (tours cannot be refunded)

It’s not our desire to keep your money if you do not tour with us, however, we do schedule drivers, vehicles, etc. to be able to bring you the best tour experience possible! Please do keep these policies in mind as your tour date draws near!

Where do you pick up? We pick up directly at every hotel in Anaheim and the Anaheim Resort Area. When you book your tour, you’ll find a pull-down menu – just choose your hotel and your tour voucher will have the pickup time for you, automatically once you book.

' title=

Downtown Los Angeles

Unlike other large cities, many people visit Los Angeles without ever setting foot Downtown. That’s a shame, since Downtown LA is rich with historic architecture and cultural attractions, not to mention sports and entertainment complexes. This slide show gives you a preview of some of the cool things to do in Downtown Los Angeles that are worth a visit.

Hollywood Sign

If there is one image that represents everything that is the glitz and glamor, fame and fortune (and misfortune) of Hollywood, it is the giant letters of its name, strung along a hillside above the city.

Though no longer the original letters (they were sold on EBay in 2005), The Hollywood Sign is the stuff of legend (including the disappointed starlet who leaped to her death off the letter “H” in 1932 and the drunken caretaker who crashed his car into the same letter, setting it on fire and destroying it in the 1940s).

' title=

Griffith Park Observatory

The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an excellent view of the Hollywood Sign, and an extensive array of space and science-related displays.

Walk of fame

Since the first star was awarded to Joanne Woodward, in 1960, celebrities and fictional characters that have contributed to the entertainment industry here have recognized with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

There are now more than 2,300 of these five-pointed bronze stars including some of the most recent honorees such as Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx and Forrest Whitaker and The Munchkins, stars of the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.

' title=

Sunset Strip

Sunset Strip is the section of Sunset Boulevard between Hollywood and Beverly Hills that includes nightclubs where many big names have appeared – both on stage and in the audience.

Mammoth billboards, known locally as vanity boards, are one of its trademarks. The Sunset Strip also has a giant statue of another fan favorite – Bullwinkle the Moose, with his pal Rocky, the flying Squirrel.

Mel’s Diner

The ultimate 50’s dining experience! George Lucas filmed scenes for American Graffiti at a Mel’s Diner. The one on Sunset Strip, where we stop for lunch on the full-day tour, is still a great place for celebrity spotting!

You don’t “have” to have lunch here – but why wouldn’t you want to? You just might recognize someone famous at the next table. Don’t let their clever disguise (Rayban(tm) sunglasses) fool you! Dine with the stars!

' title=

Beverly Hills

This is a city where the pawn shops are called “collateral lenders,” and make quick loans on Mercedes and Ferraris instead of toasters. This is a city where some of the clothing stores require customers to make advance reservations to shop, and where shoppers may routinely drop $100,000 or more in a single visit to a boutique. A city where the post office offers valet parking. This town’s “Sister City” is none other than Cannes, France.

Santa Monica Pier

Follow America’s most famous cross country highway to the Pacific Ocean, and you will find yourself at the Santa Monica Pier.

Designed as a pleasure palace and park a century ago, currently this restored family playground is gearing up for its 100th Gala in 2009.

' title=

Venice Beach

Hilary Duff shot a video here, Jim Morrison and the Doors and bandleader Benny Goodman both got their careers started here, and now it is the place  actors Jane Fonda, Viggo Mortensen and Elijah Wood call home.

It’s Venice Beach , the free-spirited beach resort town beloved for its Bohemian character, boutiques, street performers, artists, fortune tellers on the boardwalk and as a stellar place for people-watching (not to mention star-gazing)!

Tour Testimonials

See what some tourists had to say about Sunseeker tours.

Fantastic day! Alberto was a complete font of knowledge and we saw so much in just a day. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone. Thank you.

We had a great time on our tour yesterday! Alberto was a great tour guide who was very informative and funny! He even broke out some Billy Joel songs upon request! 🙂 I highly recommend this tour !

We had a fantastic tour of LA and our driver John was amazing. We loved listening to his stories. We would use and recommend this tour company to all our friends! Thank you so much for a great day!

The van picked us up at our hotel at precisely the time that was promised. Jacob, our very nice, wryly humorous and informative driver drove us through downtown LA, beautiful Griffith Park overlooking the Hollywood sign, Hollywood Blvd where we had time to explore Grauman’s, the Walk of Fame and the Dolby Center. Onto Sunset Blvd where Jacob pointed out various landmarks such as the Whiskey a GoGo , the Roxy, Viper Room etc., then stopped for a great lunch at Mel’s Diner. We then drove through Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills, then off to Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica and Venice Beach. It was a fun and wonderfully memorable 8 hour tour and I really felt like we captured the true vibe of LA. I highly recommend this tour company and a thumbs up to our driver Jacob for his knowledge of his city!

We covered a lot of territory and learned even more. Alberto has an encyclopedic knowledge of the movie and TV industry and is a history buff, as well as being fun. We moved right along to see as much as possible, but his timing was such that we didn’t feel pushed. Do your shopping another time and take advantage of his insiders knowledge of LA and adjacent areas.

This was my first trip to the west coast as I tagged along with my husband on a business trip from our home in Virginia. I only had limited time and wanted to see as much as I could. The bus was comfortable and clean. The guide was entertaining, funny, knowledgeable, experienced, and shared information from the perspective of a native with a life long love of his community. After the tour I felt as if I got well more than the $99.00 I paid for the whole day from 9am -4pm. We hit the major attractions and then in between saw places where filming occurred from numerous movies. There was limited built in time to do a little shopping and then a relaxed lunch at historical Mel’s Diner with the best milkshake I have ever had. I would highly recommend this to someone with limited time who wants to take a day to see what LA is all about.

This was an all day tour of LA! We saw a lot but don’t expect to stay long in any place. We had a stop at the parking lot at Griffith park to take a photo with the Hollywood sign in the background (way in the distance). A stop at the walk of stars outside the Chinese Theatre and Dolby Centre. for about 30 minutes. We stopped at a wonderful restaurant called Mel’s Diner for lunch could have believed I was back in the early ’60’s with the juke box and booth seating. Then off to see Santa Monica beach, a quick photo and on to Venice beach where we had about an hour walk about. Alberto was very good with the dates and names of sights along the way. He played some old melodies and had a video clip or two. A very knowledgeable guide. Lucky for us the traffic was flowing very well and we finished the tour a bit before he said. I would recommend this tour.

This was my second tour with Sunseekers and Alberto. Like many other reviewers I bought a Groupon only to find out that we couldn’t use it until we checked availability the day before the tour. Since we were only in Long Beach for a few days I called Groupon to cancel my order. (Sadly, I find the owner’s previously noted rude comments about being able to read offensive. Is that how you really want to come across to potential customers?) I particularly sought out Sunseekers because I really enjoyed my experience 4 years ago while visiting Long Beach and wanted my husband to experience it. Unfortunately the tour wasn’t as good as the first one. Roberto was very informative and entertaining, however there were fewer stops and sights noted. I was really disappointed that we couldn’t ride around Beverly Hills, however that wasn’t the tour company’s fault but the local politicians. Overall, if you’re not familiar with the LA area and want to see the sights it’s a good way to get an overview.

Had a great tour and John was a wonderful tour guide. His knowledge of all the sights was superb and he was very personable with everyone in our group. If you happen to get John as your tour guide, you will be extremely pleased!

We stayed on the queen Mary, long beach and wanted a ‘whistle stop’ cinematic tour- this day filled the bill and more, our guide- I think Roberto- was engaging, warm funny highly informative and interacted with us all, my son aged 20 was kept amused and entertained . I lovedhis choice of music for the tour and we all sang along to what lyrics we could remember! We attempted to answer his quiz celebrity questions but a lady on our bus could have entered ‘mastermind’ on film as she knew most of the answers, luckily there did not seem to be a prize….or was there? …. The only contribution my husband was able to make was regarding the history of the queen Mary and though I hate to say it ….roberto, he was right! According to the author James Steele published by Phaidon (page 25) ‘for nearly three years the queen Mary’s silent hull formed a second horizon on clydebank dwarfing the works of John brown and company where construction has ceased in December 1931. Here (ie the photograph in the book) the shipyard workers March back into action after a government subsidy allowed work on the ship to resume in April 1934’. This aside This day was rip roaring and fun, never a dull minute despite the traffic I would recommend it to everyone! You will get all the photographic opportunities for the memories you want to share, you will see so much more than listed on the tour,

Curious as to what to check out on our LA city tour with a stop in Venice Beach?

Here are some of the must-see attractions for a Venice Beach excursion:

  • The Boardwalk : People watching is a popular activity at Venice Beach because the beach attracts such a colorful cast of characters. You can watch people skate, cycle, and play volleyball or basketball from a convenient perch on the boardwalk, which also provides breathtaking views of the Pacific.
  • Muscle Beach : While the original Muscle Beach was located in Santa Monica, that once-popular hotspot disappeared way back in the 1960s. Since then, a newer, better Muscle Beach has evolved at Venice Beach. You can watch chiseled men and women exercise from outside a building that’s appropriately shaped like a dumbbell, or you can watch the action sitting in the stands near the facility’s competition stage.
  • Venice Skate Park : Constructed in 2009, Venice Skate Park has quickly turned into one of California’s most iconic skateboarding hotspots. Situated mere steps from Venice Beach’s beautiful shore, Venice Skate Park boasts gorgeous, mature palm trees and some of the best skateboarding action you’ll find anywhere. Depending on when you visit, you may even see a skate video shoot firsthand!

Excellent experience and tour! Michael was our guide and he had a vast knowledge of Orange County and the history. We visited many places around Orange Country and got to experience "can't miss" sights. This is a great option for anyone who wants to see Orange Country and explore. I felt as if I learned and saw so much.

We took the Temecula Wine tour, starting off with lunch a Robert Rinzoni winey, before getting to the winery we drove through old town Temecula and stopped to see some long horn bulls and water buffalo. The Best Coast Tours team made us feel comfortable and showed us a great time. I have been going to Temecula for years, and this was a fun, new side of the area I hadn't seen.

Tour was 9-6; Saw everything you could wish to see - Beverly Hills, Hollywood sign, Farmers Market, Rodeo Drive etc. The driver was knowledgable. It was a great value. We never would have been able to see so much, navigate the highways and directions. It was an excellent experience.

Joe was very knowledgeable and even personalized the tour a little. We had a smashing day visiting Laguna Beach, Crystal Cove, Marina Del Rey and others all of which enhanced our holiday no end. On the way back, Joe was flexible enough to take us to a lovely spot to spend the evening at Newport Beach rather than a return to our hotel.

We toured both LA and Orange County beaches with Best Coast Tours last week. Joe and Michael are outstanding hosts providing historical information regarding the sites along with just the right mix of pop culture. Not only are the extremely knowledgeable about the area, they are fun! We are so glad to have picked Best Coast Tours to introduce us to California.

California Dreamin': Monterey, Yosemite & Napa (Monterey, CA to San Francisco, CA) (2023)

This tour provided a highly comprehensive itinerary that enabled me to see many of the sites that wanted to visit in northern and ceIntral California. Todd, our tour manager, provided detailed manuscripts of daily cultural insights as well as lists of dining options and activities that could be performed during free times in the tour. He was also consistently available to answer questions and provide assistance with timing activities during free periods such that rejoining group activities was seamless. The accommodations were of very high quality and located in established neighborhoods of the cities in which we stayed. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe to explore the areas around the hotel and find new dining experiences. Jose, our coach driver, had a delightful sense of humor and provided safe, easy transitions during travel days. Overall, the tour was reasonably paced and provided an excellent value for the price. Thank you for a great, organized travel experience. I will definitely be booking with this tour company in the future!

Your highly trained and knowledgeable captain will provide informative narration on the geologic landmarks and the wildlife we may encounter as we set out in search of majestic fin whales, massive blue whales, humpback whales and gray whales as the make their way along an epic 6,000-mile migration between their warm breeding and calving lagoons in Baja Mexico and their feeding grounds in the Arctic! This is one of the most amazing wildlife migrations on the planet, and of the few migrations that we can see up-close. We’ll also be in search of pods of dolphins, sea lions, harbor seals and a variety of sea birds. The comfortable double-deck vessel which carries up to 250 guests features spacious open-air viewing decks, indoor and outdoor seating, snack bar and multiple restrooms. This day full of nostalgic treasures begins with an included, three-course early lunch with choice of entrée at the nostalgic North Woods Inn. This afternoon we continue to the Nethercutt Collection, showcasing rare collectibles and lavish luxuries ranging from mechanical musical instruments and antique furniture to the true heart of the collection: over 250 American and European automobiles dating from 1898 to 1997. This world-renowned “treasure house of beauty” is a result of J.B. Nethercutt’s lifetime of collecting and the means to do so as the owner of Merle Norman cosmetics. A docent-guided tour of the Nethercutt Collection will showcase treasures spanning four floors including an outstanding assortment of beautifully restored antique, classic automobiles – displayed in an opulent re-creation of an automotive grand salon of the 1920's and 1930's. The Music Room displays a world-class collection of automated mechanical instruments – ranging from tiny musical pocket watches to the mighty Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. And perhaps the most amazing part: from the cars to the instruments, they all work! Enjoy time at leisure browsing the Nethercutt Museum featuring the world’s greatest antique, vintage, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Just imagine row after row of beautifully restored classic cars dating back to the earliest days of automotive greatness. The best swimming with pigs tours in the bahamas.

Discover how to responsibly swim with pigs in the Bahamas.

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas

Swimming pigs of the Bahamas in the Out Islands of the Exuma

Getty Images

Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.

If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.

Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?

Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.

How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas

Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.

Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.

How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau

Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:

3N's Vacation Services: Swimming Pigs Flight & Tour

Price: From $675 per person Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours

This full-day, all-inclusive tour transports passengers from Nassau to Staniel Cay by plane, where you'll continue your excursion via boat. The tour includes several stops and activities:

  • Snorkeling at Thunderball Grotto
  • Visiting the iguanas of Guana Cay

While tour groups are limited to 12 guests at maximum, private tours are available for a more intimate experience. Recent reviewers say they enjoyed this tour, though some expressed mixed feelings about the captains.

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida

There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:

Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip

Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours

This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.

Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.

Is Pig Beach ethical?

Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.

In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.

In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:

  • A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
  • Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
  • A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.

While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.

How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach

All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:

  • Remain calm at all times.
  • Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
  • Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
  • Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
  • If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.

What to pack for your excursion

Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Beach towel
  • Camera and/or phone
  • Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
  • Change of clothing
  • Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
  • Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)

It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.

It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.

Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.

Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross previously visited Pig Beach during a press trip to the Bahamas. Disheartened by tourists' mistreatment of the pigs, she aims to educate travelers on how to visit Big Major Cay and other animal-centric destinations responsibly.

China launches Chang'e 6 lunar probe, revving up space race with U.S.

WENCHANG SPACE LAUNCH SITE, China — China launched an uncrewed lunar spacecraft Friday in a first-of-its-kind mission to bring back samples from the far side of the moon, the latest step in a rapidly advancing Chinese space program that is spurring competition with the United States and others.

The Chang’e 6 lifted off on time at 5:27 p.m. local time (5:27 a.m. ET) from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in China’s southern island province of Hainan.

The launch of the lunar probe, which NBC News was one of a handful of news organizations to attend, and the national excitement around it had transformed the normally sleepy fishing village of Longlou into a major tourist attraction, with crowds spilling from tour buses and heading to beaches and rooftops with the best views of the spaceport. One rooftop owner said he had sold out 200 seats at 200 yuan (about $28) each.

A Long March 5 rocket, carrying the Chang'e-6 mission lunar probe, lifts off

Ahead of the launch there was a festival-like atmosphere on the beach, where vendors offered space paraphernalia and groups of children sold Chinese flags for 3 yuan (about 40 cents) each. Families sprawled on picnic blankets playing cards, while others strung up hammocks between palm trees so they could wait in the limited shade.

Yiuwah Ng, a 28-year-old real estate office worker from the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, traveled six hours by car and another three hours by ferry to stake out the best spot along the shore, where he had been camping for three days with friends and his dog.

“I want to witness this historic moment,” he said of the launch, his fourth. “It’s an important first step for China’s lunar exploration.”

Max Zhang, a self-described “rocket chaser” from the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, has been photographing launches at Wenchang from the beach since 2011.

“I’m addicted to the shock of seeing the launches, especially the sound of the rocket flame,” he said. “It shakes my heart.”

Space enthusiasts await the launch of China’s Chang’e 6 lunar probe on the island of Hainan on Thursday.

‘ A force to be reckoned with’

If successful, the Chang’e mission will be a crucial step in realizing the country’s goals of landing Chinese astronauts on the moon by 2030 and eventually building a base on the lunar surface.

The outcome of the mission will also have implications far beyond China’s borders. A slew of spacefaring nations — including Russia, India, Japan and the U.S. — also have their sights set on the moon, creating what some experts have likened to a new kind of space race.

“China is trying to prove that it’s a force to be reckoned with, and so it’s always that China is competing against everyone in space,” said Clayton Swope, deputy director of the Aerospace Security Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

A successful Chang’e 6 mission would demonstrate how sophisticated China’s lunar exploration program has become in a relatively short time.

“Twenty-five years ago, they had very rudimentary space capabilities,” said Todd Harrison, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy think tank based in Washington. “Going from that to where they are today — I think they’ve clearly exceeded Russia, and their space capabilities are really only second to the United States.”

China achieved its first moon landing in 2013 with the Chang’e 3 mission, which set a lander and rover on the lunar surface to study the moon’s terrain. Before that, only the U.S. and the former Soviet Union had successfully landed spacecraft on the moon.

In 2019, China notched another historic milestone with its Chang’e 4 flight, becoming the first country to land a probe on the far side of the moon , the part that permanently faces away from Earth.

The following year, in 2020, China returned to the moon’s near side, which always faces Earth, landing the Chang’e 5 spacecraft on a volcanic plain known as Oceanus Procellarum. The probe retrieved samples there and brought them back to Earth, representing a big technological leap forward.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has invited scientists from the U.S., Europe and Asia to apply to borrow the lunar samples for their own research, holding a pitch meeting last week in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Researchers funded by NASA received rare approval from Congress to submit proposals, raising the possibility of high-level U.S.-China space cooperation that is otherwise prohibited by U.S. law.

This time, the Chang’e 6 spacecraft is aiming to land and retrieve samples from the South Pole-Aitken basin, an ancient and sprawling impact crater on the far side of the moon.

Spectators on a beach near the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Thursday.

Conducting a sample return mission from the side of the moon that always faces away from Earth is challenging because mission controllers on the ground have no way of directly contacting a spacecraft in that region. Instead, signals need to be relayed through a satellite now orbiting the moon that China launched from the same site in Hainan last month.

While difficult, the effort could have enormous payoffs. Studies suggest that the moon’s near side was more volcanically active than the far side, which means all of the lunar samples obtained thus far may be telling only part of the story of the moon’s origin and evolution.

Collecting lunar samples from different geological eras and regions “is of great value and significant for all mankind to have a more comprehensive understanding of the moon and even the origin of the solar system,” Ge Ping, a mission leader from CNSA’s Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center, told reporters in Hainan on Thursday.

Beyond its scientific objectives, the Chang’e 6 mission carries with it geopolitical considerations. The flight is a precursor to a pair of Chinese robotic missions to the moon’s south pole to scout locations to build a moon base. Last year, the Chinese and Russian space agencies agreed to jointly build a research station on the lunar surface.

NASA and its commercial partners also aim to establish a permanent presence at the lunar south pole, though the agency’s Artemis moon missions have faced numerous delays and budget overruns . The current timeline has American astronauts returning to the lunar surface in 2026 at the earliest.

With China and Russia forming a rival coalition, there is some pressure for the U.S. to keep its foot on the accelerator, Harrison said.

“It does matter who gets there first, and it matters how you get there and what kind of coalition you’re bringing with you,” he said.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has on multiple occasions warned that the U.S. runs the risk of falling behind China’s lunar ambitions. In an interview this week with Yahoo Finance , Nelson outlined what’s at stake in the new space race.

“I think it’s not beyond the pale that China would suddenly say, ‘We are here. You stay out,’” he said.

Asked Thursday about international competition in space, Ge said, “All countries in the world should explore, develop and use outer space peacefully.”

“There is no need to worry too much,” he added. “Space programs are for all humans.”

A street vendor sells space merchandise ahead of the lunar launch Friday.

As more countries around the world build up space capabilities, NASA has pushed for more global cooperation, establishing the Artemis Accords in 2020 to promote peaceful, responsible and sustainable practices. U.S. law prevents China from joining the 39 other nations that have signed the accords, which both China and Russia have criticized as a tool to promote U.S. dominance in space.

Many Western space policy experts have in turn raised concerns about China’s and Russia’s intentions. The full scope of China’s ambitions in space is not known, for instance, because its space agency does not operate with the same level of transparency as NASA. The country’s space program is also more closely tied to the military than in the U.S.

“We cannot ever say that China’s investment in civilian space technologies are only civilian and not to be used for military purposes,” said Namrata Goswami, a professor in the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University and co-author of the 2020 book “Scramble for the Skies: The Great Power Competition to Control the Resources of Outer Space.”

While it may feel as if China’s spaceflight objectives have accelerated in recent years, they are part of a decadeslong strategy, Goswami said.

“Many of the leaders of China’s space program announced these goals and timelines 20 years ago,” she said. “What is astounding to me is that they are achieving almost all their milestones on time, and for them, that has a strategic advantage in the global narrative of who’s doing it better.”

As much as the moon and its resources can provoke competition among nations, space exploration can also be unifying, Swope said.

“We are literally a speck in the universe, and when we go to the moon or explore space, we as humankind have that shared human trait where we want to understand the unknown and we want to discover,” he said. “That does transcend politics.”

Gypsy rose rides tmz tour bus, dines at lisa vanderpump's restaurant, gypsy rose blanchard ultimate l.a. tourist experience ... tmz tour, beach, sur.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard 's brief trip to Los Angeles this week ended up chock-full of memories -- and it's because she had the ultimate tourist experience ... with some help from TMZ!

GRB hopped on the TMZ Celebrity Tour Thursday ... and, she was totally down to earth -- taking pics with some of the riders and answering our questions about her time in L.A. ... including if anyone famous has ever extended an invite to hang out.

As it turns out, Gypsy says that has happened ... naming one of the Jonas Bros. as having reached out and telling her to roll through for an event in January, which she couldn't make.

Gypsy also tells us about helpful celebs -- like child safety advocate Elizabeth Smart -- who have DM'd her and even answers whether she'd consider a career in entertainment ... as you can see, she certainly seems open to the idea.

Waiting for your permission to load TikTok Post.

We also got her to name her favorite two stars ... and, ya gotta listen to who her celeb crush is.

Gypsy filled up her day with more than the tour BTW ... we're told Gypsy and the fam also went to the beach in Santa Monica -- the first time she's ever seen the ocean. Gypsy went about ankle-deep into the waves and says it was colder than she imagined.

Gypsy also hit a famous L.A. eatery too. As we told you ... Gypsy and her stepmom Kristy are big fans of "Vanderpump Rules" -- so, they ended up going to SUR, no less, which was on their bucket list ... and where they got dolled up to chow down.

Gypsy ordered french fries and Sprite for dinner, and added a brownie and ice cream for dessert ... she even met 'VPR' star Peter Madrigal -- bringing reality TV to real life!

Fans and restaurant employees steadily streamed up to the table during the meal to congratulate Gypsy on her freedom and take a pic with her.

After a jam-packed L.A. day, Gypsy's now heading back to Louisiana ... flying out of the City of Angels early Friday morning -- and, we got her final impressions during an interview at LAX before she boarded her flight. Take a listen ... sounds like she's a fan of SoCal.

Thanks for riding with us, Gypsy ... hope to see you back in L.A. soon!!!
