De Haan is a beach resort on the Belgian sea coast in West Flanders . Thanks to a clever and strict real estate policy, De Haan has kept the charm of the 1930s, with a lot of white villas and compared to the other Belgian seaside resorts a very limited number of postwar apartment blocks. It is forbidden to build buildings higher than 5 floors here. In 2018, it was home to 13,000 permanent residents.

De Haan (French: Le Coq ) used to be a very popular destination among the French speaking aristocracy and rich.

The municipality of De Haan includes the villages of Klemskerke, Vlissegem, Vosseslag (which has a lot of campings) and Wenduine (which also is a seaside resort).

The coastal tram ( de Kusttram in Dutch) is the easiest way to reach De Haan by public transport. The tram line runs from De Panne near the French border to Knokke near the Dutch border. One could take the train from Ghent , Bruges or Brussels and transfer to the tram at Ostend or Blankenberge , the railway and tram stations being next to each other. De Haan has 3 tram stops; you probably want the stop at De Haan aan Zee which has a very quaint, photogenic station building. De Lijn operates the coastal tram.

Get around [ edit ]

The central portion of the town is about a kilometre long and just over half as wide, so you can get around easily on foot. Between De Haan and Wenduine you can very easily take the Kusttram. However, if you want to see the sights in the inland villages of for example Klemskerke, than the best way to do so is by bike or by car.

A distinctive characteristic of De Haan is the fanciful architecture of many of its buildings, both commercial as well as residential. Many buildings are in the belle époque style. The buildings can be a reason in itself to visit De Haan. Most such buildings of interest are between the tram line and the beach. The commercial buildings (hotels, restaurants) are on the route from the tram station to the beach and along the beach itself. One should also look at the houses along residential streets as almost all have some degree of quaintness.

Between the tram tracks is a historical sign saying "don't step on the tracks" in Dutch on one side and in French on the other. The coastal tram used to be part of a much larger network of cross-country trams (known as the Vicinal in French and the Buurttram in Dutch) of which very little remains in operation today.

• There is a small park at the end of the street Normandiëlaan which contains the life-size statue of Albert Einstein sitting on a park bench.

This nature reserve consists of a more than 1000 years old dune area, located between De Haan (Vosseslag village to be more precise) and the neighboring municipality of Bredene. Since 1993 it is protected as a nature reserve.

In the period after the Second World War the building served as a holiday centre for Walloon children. The coastline that time was more inland, so the hotel was situated right next to the beach. • Take the tram to other coastal places such as Knokke , Ostend or Nieuwpoort . Also neighbouring Bredene-aan-zee is nice to visit, as it is the only Belgian coastal town where the original coastal dunes have not been destroyed by the 'Atlantikwall' of endless rows of uniform, ugly and grey apartment blocks so characteristic of the Belgian seaside. In Bredene, there is no seaside promenade, the town is behind the dunes and high-rises are limited. On the beach, all you see behind you are dunes, and a couple of casual beach bars. A few WWII German bunkers (part of the original Atlantikwall) still stand on top of the dunes. Bredene is also home to Belgium's only nudist beach (a small section of the beach east of town centre). Bredene is halfway towards Oostende, and you can get there either by coastal tram or by walking along the beach (5 km).

Just a few minutes' walk from the coast (this area is home to the country's longest beach), the holiday park has a lake, which some of the accommodation overlooks. But several places to eat on-site, whether for a snack or a proper meal, mean you can take a break from cooking too.

Nice atmosphere, service ok. The restaurant is probably good for dinner. However, the "Uruguay Angus striploin" I picked was beyond what I think is acceptable. Never before did I get such an inferior quality piece of striploin, see foto. To their credit I was offered... a drink on the house after I complained but in no mood to accept that. More

The restaurant has a few tables outside, but unfortunately the only free ones were inside. The distance between the tables is reasonable, and some plexiglas separators should make you feel more Covid-safe. Unfortunately, the seperators have the size of the table, the guests are still... side by side, making this setup a bit useless. The interior ambiance is nice though. Food was OK and staff is friendly. For a restaurant at the Belgian coast line, I had higher expectations on the fish dishes. More

A bit expensive but wholly does worth it. We ordered pasta and grilled shrimps and everything was great. A nice quiet place and very professional host fluently speaking english, german and dutch (at least!).

My husband and I had dinner there two days ago. The staff wasn't friendly at all and we had the impression that they all weren't in a good mood. The mussels were totally overcooked and to be honest the worst we had on our whole... trip (which has been the 6th time mussels). If you want a nice and tasty dinner there is definitely much better choices than Bistro aan Zee in De Haan. More

We had diner at restaurant Bistro aan zee. The mussels of the house (with lobstersauce) are oke but not special. The starter razor blade mussels was fantastic.

Very friendly welcome, warm atmosphere, yummy 'amuse bouche' followed by a gorgeous spicy chicken burger - little suggestion: serve with home made ketchup - and really good french fries!! We'll come back asap

Beautifully decorated, high spec, great facilities, stunning room. The hospitality extended by Wim and family was amazing. I read the reviews of the breakfast but nothing prepares you for the locally sourced gourmet feast that awaits each morning! There are fantastic restaurants nearby and De Haan itself is a really lovely place to go on holiday to. So many great cities and towns within a short driving distance. B&B d’oude brouwerij is a gem of a place and is faultless. You need to visit!!

We had a most wonderful one day stay in Maison Rabelais. The hosts created an atmosphere, which was warm, cosy and family like. Wonderful welcoming cake, delicious breakfast, privacy, very enjoyable common area, and the location couldn't be better in De Haan. What is definitely better than other B&Bs in the area is that Maison Rabelais is not at all pretentious, but truly welcoming towards guests, so we felt more comfortable, particularly with kids. We will be back for sure.

What room types do you have available.

We have three room types: standard room, superior room and family room. Each room has a practical bathroom with shower, comfortable double bed or twin beds. In addition, each room has wifi, air conditioning, smart TV, a luggage rack and a desk with 2 chairs.

From what time can we enter the room on the day of check-in?

On the day of check-in, the room is available from 3 pm. Are you already on the ground earlier? Report to the hotel in advance.

Is it possible to put a crib in the room?

It is possible to provide a cot (free of charge) in the room. Please advise in advance if desired.

Are there disabled rooms available?

Our hotel has several disabled rooms. If you want a disabled room, it is always better to contact the hotel in advance to check availability.

Do you also have connecting rooms?

Our hotel has 8 connecting rooms. These rooms are connected in pairs by a connecting door. If you want connecting rooms, it is always better to contact the hotel in advance to check availability.

Are pets welcome?

We are happy to welcome your pet to the hotel. The supplement for this is 20 euros per pet per night.

Can I park at the hotel?

Yes, our hotel has spacious, private parking at a rate of €15 per car per night. For guests with electric cars, we also offer charging facilities. We have two charging stations with four available spaces.

How much does breakfast cost?

Breakfast costs €21.00 per adult and €10.50 for children under 10. Children under 3 years of age may enjoy the breakfast buffet free of charge.

What facilities for cyclist are there?

You can store your bike safely and dry in our bike shed during your stay. We also have a basic bicycle repair kit, a bicycle pump and a first aid kit available. It is also possible to dry and air your clothing.
