There is a drop-off area at the entrance to the Visitor Center. Once you arrive, there are plenty of benches inside and outside for resting.

Is the Visitor Center wheelchair-accessible?

Do we get to tour the actual plant.

No, we are unable to take visitors through the actual plant, but this is why we opened the museum, which includes a movie theater and video that gives a wonderful “behind the scenes” tour of the manufacturing process.

How long does it take to go through the Visitor Center?

Most guests typically spend 1-1½ hours in the Museum and General Store. This does not include time for lunch at the Family Cafe – which you definitely don’t want to miss!

Does the Cafe have vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free options on the menu?

Yes. Please call the Cafe (865-509-3485) for more details.

Do we get a free sample of beans when we visit?

Yes, when you have lunch at the Bush’s ® Family Cafe you will be served a sample of “the bean of the day” prior to your meal.

Not at this time.

Will Duke be at the Visitor Center?

On occasion Duke will stop in for a meet and greet – when we know he’s stopping in, we will post on our Facebook page.

Is there room for RV/tour bus parking at your facility?

Yes. There are designated parking spaces at the far end of the parking area.

What type of merchandise do you sell in the General Store?

We have all the Bush’s ® product offerings, including regional flavors that you might not find at your local grocer. There are Bush’s ® -branded items (t-shirts, hoodies, magnets) and also houseware/kitchen items and other unique finds.

Do you give tours of the Bush homeplace located across from the Visitor Center?

There are no tours except for a few days in December – the home is decorated for the holidays and guests may stop in for a tour. For specific dates/times, please call 865-509-3077.

Stop at the Bush’s Visitor Center in the Smokies to Taste, Shop and Learn About Beans

Get ready to say, ‘bean there, done that.’.

Omnipresent at every summer barbeque, Bush’s Baked Beans are a classic. But have you ever given them more thought than their place on your table? In the Smoky Mountains, you’ll find a deep dive into the humble bean that will have you reaching for your can opener.

Nestled in the foothills of the Smokies in Chestnut Hill, Tennessee, just 45 minutes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Bush’s Visitor Center is a fascinating journey into America’s favorite canned bean brand. Located in the Bush family’s original general store from 1911, the visitor center is an educational and entertaining stop for the whole family. Start in the museum with the tour video to get a lay of the land before continuing through exhibits where you can learn about the history of the company, how beans are grown and how Condon Bush developed Bush’s Original Baked Beans from his mother, Kathleen’s, recipe. The secret family recipe hasn’t changed in over 50 years and the Bush family still owns and operates the company out of Chestnut Hill. Across the street from the visitor center, the Bush Homeplace can be seen, though you can’t tour the private home.

Exhibits on the Bush family and bean history.

The tour through the museum is self guided and always free. You can calculate your weight in beans and find recipes to take home and try in your own kitchen.

Beans are naturally high in protein and fiber and are as good for the planet as they are for your body. Beans, which are part of the pulse family, require minimal water to farm and help create healthy soil where they grow. Being committed to sustainability comes naturally to Bush, and you can learn all about that commitment on the tour.

After the tour, head to the Family Cafe and be sure to come hungry. The menu features hot and cold sandwiches, salads, entrees like chili and breaded chicken tenders, all with the same common theme which is, of course, beans. Don’t miss the desserts, which are truly unique. The Pinto Bean Pecan Pie is inventive and delicious, made with pecans and pinto beans.

Bean educational area at Bush's Visitor Center

At the end of your trip to the visitor center, a stop at the general store is a must. This isn’t your typical gift shop. You’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back in time to the turn of the century as you shop for souvenirs to take home. You can find every product Bush makes, including regional flavors that might be hard to find at your home grocery store. There’s also Bush’s merch for the bean lover in your life, kitchen and homewares and plenty of souvenirs with Duke’s face on them.

Plan to spend a few hours at the visitor center, including eating lunch at the cafe. It’s open Monday through Saturday with the exception of holidays and the days leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas. The museum and store are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the cafe opens at 11 a.m. There’s a big parking lot with spaces large enough to fit RVs, and the property is wheelchair and stroller accessible so you can enjoy it with the whole family.

First, the video regarding the history of the Bush Brothers and Company and the process of producing the final canned product is captioned! Yes, that's right, it includes closed captioning. You'd be surprised at the number of museums, factories, etc., that don't include them or are not on for the guests. The majority of the time, we're omitted, and with the deaf and hard-of-hearing population in the United States being at 1.8 million people, that's a shame. So, thank you, Bush Brothers and Company. Next, there are other areas of interest, like family photos and a history of collaboration with other companies, but the other attraction is their general store. In it, you'll find plenty of canned beans, several that we've never seen at our local grocery store, like Simmerin Caribbean Black Beans, Southwest Zest Pinto Beans, Organic Soups, and many more. So, stop at the Bush's Visitors Center the next time you pass through to reach the Carolinas or head to the Knoxville region. You might find something you'll like.

10/10 a fun little side trip. We stopped by here on our way to Pigeon Forge and have absolutely NO REGRETS. Staff were so friendly and this place was way bigger than you'd expect. They have a whole museum dedicated to the history of BUSHS baked beans AND a cafe you can eat at. AND THE CUTEST LITTLE GIFT SHOP.

We drove past this on our way to our hotel and I screamed. I love visiting a fun little place. It's a quick free experience near pigeon forge. I got to learn about beans and buy a new can of beans I haven't seen in stores before! So many flavors of beans! And some fun bean merch. I was heartbroken to find out Duke the dog was going to be there 3 days after I was there. I would really recommend a quick stop here. The staff was all very friendly and had lots of information.

Such a fun, family-friendly place! This visitor center provides free admission to all, so no need to worry about the cost. However, you should still bring your wallet to purchase some delicious beans or a souvenir from the gift shop. The tour is accompanied by super friendly staff that carry loads of knowledge about Bush's with their southern accents. After you finish touring the center, you must walk next door to the Bush's Cafe and enjoy a meal with your family provided by the most caring staff!

Photo of Debi R.

This was a random stop for lunch while passing through. The cafe is good lunch stop. The museum has the history of the family's start into the business of canning then into beans. So interesting. My biggest surprise was that there are only 3 things going into their can of beans. A piece of raw bacon, then the blanched beans and lastly sauce. The can is sealed and turned to mix ingredients. All of their beans are then cooked in the can. The family home is on site with a huge manufacturing plant, museum, gift shop and cafe. Nice place to visit with very interesting and friendly staff. You can find their bean products that are not found at your local markets and the price is also much less.

What a cool place to visit!! It's a quick stroll through the museum that leads you into the gift shop. You can watch a video of the plant also while visiting! Loved the picture ops available in the front. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with such friendly staff. They even offered to take our group picture in front of the Bush's sign. Saw a few items on the final wall that showed the aisle of all Bush's offerings that we've never seen in stores before! They just released their zero sugar baked beans this past January. Found that they have dips and chili too!? But don't panic, you can purchase these in the gift shop and they are reasonably priced at a little over a dollar. We stocked up on a few :) and the staff member said that if you don't see the items in your store that you can ask your store or you can call the number on the can to ask that they bring to your area.

I love seeing how things we use in everyday life are made. The only downside of this tour/museum is that you don't get to go in the plant for the tour. This is really informative and there is a video tour in the theater room. There is a store where you can buy different merchandise and cans of beans, some of which you may not know they make! Separate review for the cafe!

This is a really cool place to visit. It's a little out of the way to get to but, well worth a little extra time to go there. They have anything and everything related to Bush Beans. There is a very nice restaurant with very good food. A museum with loads of artifacts and neat stuff. There is a very nice gift shop with reasonable pried goods. And there are photo opps with an old truck or cut outs with Mr. Bush and the dog. If you have some extra time it is well worth the time to see.

Photo of Terri M.

Driving up I was surprised at how huge the Bush's Baked Beans Manufacturing Plant was and how many trucks they had. The museum/visitor center is right next to the Diner so Im not sure why it has a different address. That just seems silly. The employees were friendly. I guess I was expecting something more of a tour such as seeing how its done like they do at Tillamook. You can easily walk through in 5-10 minutes unless you want to read a bunch of stuff. The old fashion kitchen was cute. You can also take a picture next to the ginormous can of beans

Awesome place to tour!! Interesting to learn the full story and full of facts and tales to get the full bean story!!! Grounds are beautiful , gift shop with more types of beans then I have ever seen in the store !!! Guess we will have to come back to purchase what I can't find close to me in stores!! Cafe with all types of interesting recipes using beans!!! The original family have an amazing story and anyone in Tennessee should venture here and enjoy!!

Great FREE tour of Bush Beans with Welcoming & Friendly Staff

My husband and I stopped at tbe Bush Bean Visitor Center while we were visiting the Smokies. It is only about a 30 minute drive from downtown Sevierville to Chestnut Hill, where Bush Beans is located. There are not too many businesses along the drive, except a few small restaurants, an antique shop & Forbidden Caverns. Along the drive it is nice countryside. Once at Bush Beans, we pulled in and parked at the Visitor Center. One of the 1st things I noticed was the beautiful yellow & purple flowers all around the building. As we approached, we saw the Bush Family Cafe (opens at 11am). Here we went around the side of the building and saw a couple of old Bush Beans pick up trucks. My husband loved these. I thought they were a nice addition. Around the next corner, we entered into the A.J. Bush & Co. General Store & Visitor Center. As we entered the General Store, we were immediately welcomed by one of the employees. We were told that a film would be starting in the theater in about 15 minutes. So we decided to take a peek around the General Store for a few minutes before the film started. Inside the general store we saw all kinds of things including candy, glass milk bottles, Route 11 Chips and LOTS of Bush Beans merchandise. They sell lots of varieties of their canned beans and chili starters. In the gift shop they sell Bush merchandise like t-shirts, sweatshirts, pencils, stuffed Duke dogs, flying pigs, coffee mugs, can openers & etc. The place was organized really well & everything was displayed so nicely. It had an old time country feel to it, but was so clean & organized. We immediately started filling up a shopping basket. Since we wanetd to tour the museum, we left our basket with one of the employees while we took the tour. As we entered the museum, we signed the old fashioned guest book & made our way into the theater. It is a small theater, but large enough to hold all the visitors without feeling cramped. Here they showed us 2 short films. The 1st film was about the Bush family history and how Bush Beans got started. It also gave us a peek inside the workings of the Bush Bean factory--from fields to our shelves in the grocery store. It really gave us a great appreciate for this company. It was interesting to learn that they use water from mountain streams to make their beans & the water eventually gets returned to their fields through an irrigation system. Recycling. The 2nd film was about Jay & Duke. It was a cute light hearted film showing Jay & Duke through the decades. In total, the two films probably lasted 20-25 minutes. As we exited the theater, the guide reminded us to check out the Bush Family Cafe on the way out. He said they open at 11am, but that they sell out of their famous Pinto Bean Pecan Pie early, so to get a slice IF we wanted to try it. Once we had seen the films, we made our way back into the museum. Here we saw a replica of Duke's Dog House. We also saw a HUGE Bush Bean Can that you can walk through. Inside the can were screens that would show you the process that the beans take to go from fields to your shelf in the grocery store. It was basically the same footage from the short film broken down into small steps. So, IF you skip the film..you can still see the manufacturing process inside the HUGE Bush Bean can. Inside the museum, we also saw a HUGE Super Sack of Beans. One of the empoyees saw us walking around & offered to take our picture with several of the HUGE props (Duke's Dog House, the HUGE Bush Beans can & the Super Sack). He was really friendly & we thought this was super nice!! Around the corner from the Super Sack, they had a scale that would calculate your weight in BEANS. We thought this was so funny! Next to that was a display on Beans around the World where you could listen to the music these beans would make. As we walked up the ramp to the 2nd level, we saw a sign that said to REMEMBER to take your photo with Duke. Up on the 2nd level, we saw an employee demostrating a can seamer. On the second level, there were TONS of educational signs to read. You could spend a few hours reading all the signs and displays. Many of the displays had films that you could watch as well. One of my favorites was the section about Duke. It was also showing a commerical with Duke the dog. Here one of the employees started telling us about Duke. He gave us a mini-history on Duke the dog, which we found interesting. As you are exiting the musuem, there is a small photo booth where you can go have your picutre taken & photo-shopped to be with Duke the Dog or the Bush Beans can. There were a few other designs to choose from too, but we chose Duke in the backyard. Our 1st photo was FREE. I think IF you want multiple copies, you have to pay a small fee for them. As you walk down the exit ramp back into the general store, you will see a flying pig going around the top of the ceiling. This is from one of their commercials where Jay tells Duke that he can sell the family recipe "when pigs fly". The Bush's Secret Family Recipe can also be seen securely locked away in a protected case. As you exit the musuem, you will find yourself back inside the general store. Here in addition to the merchandise, you will also see a kiosk where you can get recipes. You just choose a Bush Beans product & it will give you a recipe. They have a print it OR an email it option. However, when we were there, the print-it option was down. You could still email it to yourself IF you wanted. So that was kind of neat. From here we made our way back into the gift shop & got our basket of goodies. Here we checked out and signed the electronic guest book. This guest book would put you on a map of people who had visited Bush Beans. As we were leaving, we were thanked for visiting & one of the employees was quick to make sure we had gotten our photo with Duke before we left. Before we left, we did visit the Bush Family Cafe & enjoyed our visit there too (see separate review). Overall, we had a GREAT visit with Bush Beans Visitor Center. From start to finish, it was a great FREE tour. Sure, you didn't get to tour the actual working factory (across the street), but it was still a great tour. The staff was all SUPER friendly. Everyone was engaging & made us feel so welcome. They told us stories, took our photos & even made sure we got our FREE photo with Duke. Their hospitality really made an impression on us. We enjoyed the tour thoroughly. The rest of the day we couldn't help but keep saying, "Roll that beautiful baked bean footage". What a beautiful place to visit!! We would definately recommend it to others and we will surely visit it & the cafe again on our next trip to the Smokies. Totally worth the short drive from downtown Sevierville!!

bush bean factory tour

The attendant at the welcome center recommended this hidden gem. Cudos to her. It is about 20-30 minutes outside of Pigeon Forge in Chestnut Hill, Tennassee. It was a nice scenic trip around Douglas Dam. The museum is free. After a short video you tour the museum on a self guided and interactive tour. You can have photos taken with Duke, otherwise you are photoshopped in. Seeing some of the visitors creative art work was fun. They will display yours as well. Ther is a gift shop/general store where you can purchase all of the products they process and at a lower cost then your local grocery. I would suggest a sampling bar as I wanted to purchase some of the combinations that I can't get around home such as the jalopena and bacon flavored black eyed peas but was not sure. We ate at the restaurant which has been opened a year. My husband had the fried bologna and cheese with fries and polished it off with a huge 3 scoop bananna split. I ordered the pimento cheese sandwhich on wheat bread, along with sweet potatoe fries and finished it off with a slice of home made coconut cream pie with the old fashioned meringue topping. My daughter ordered the chilli dog with cole slaw and finished hers off with the chocolate cream pie and meringue topping. Just like grandma used to make. We were given the beans of the day which were the bourban blend and they were delicious. You could order a wide selection of beans as a second side. The cost was $43. The food was great, some of the best we have had. The service was quick and our server was a delightful young lady. For a great day in the Smokies that does not cost a fortune I would pair this with Parrot Island in the morning and then go to Bush's Museum. We spent less then $100 for the entire day.
