Miles of tea garden, wildlife sanctuary, dense forest, innumerable streams are the main attraction for nature enthusiasts. It is also one of the best budget destinations in India for wildlife photographers. Dooars is also a place for adventure lovers who can have several treks like Choto Mahakal, Baro Mahakal, Buxa Fort, etc.

Best Time to Visit Buxa Jayanti Dooars

Winter(October to February) is the best time to visit Dooars and Buxa Jayanti for wildlife photography and jungle safaris. The temperature hovers between 10 to 23-degree centigrade.

In Summer(March to June) temperature remains between 21- 32 degrees centigrade in Jayanti, but not extremely hot. Most of the jungle safaris and sanctuaries remain closed in Monsoon from 15th June to 15th September due to heavy rainfall. But Buxa Jayanti has its own beauty(entire region transforms to green paradise) in Monsoon which is ideal for nature and adventure lovers.

We(me with my parents, uncle, aunt and niece) started our Buxa Jayanti tour from Sealdah railway station on 31 st May,’19(Friday) at around 6:30 pm and reached Sealdah around 7:30 pm. Kanchankanya Express(13149 from platform no 9B) started exactly on its scheduled departure at 8:30 pm.

The main attraction of this train journey started once the train crossed Sivok railway station. Your eyes will be soothed when the train passes through the Jungles and beautiful landscapes of Dooars tea gardens and mountains will add more pleasure during your journey.

Ultimately, we reached our destination New Alipurduar Junction. Our ever-smiling friend Ratan was ready with his white Bolero in the parking space. We quickly loaded our luggage on the back of the vehicle and started for our first destination Jayanti Riverview Homestay , the best budget accommodation at Jayanti forest.

On the way, we had to stop at Rajabhatkhawa permit office to get our Buxa Jayanti permit for entering Buxa Tiger Reserve(BTR). The road leading from that point is very beautiful with BTR spanning on both sides of the road. The vast Buxa Tiger Reserve spans around 471 sq. km area.

It took around 45 minutes to reach Jayanti. We completed our lunch with Rice, Daal, Alu Sabji and Fish Curry. The quality was too good and after a long journey, it tastes like heaven.

Best Places to Visit in Buxa Jayanti

Chunia watch tower.

Chunia Watch Tower was the first sightseeing of our Buxa Jayanti tour plan. We crossed the Jayanti river bed to go to the opposite bank and within 45 minutes we reached Chunia. The forest on this side is not that dense, rather the trees are dispersed from one another.

On reaching Chunia Watch Tower, we saw 2/3 private vehicles are already parked there and the tourists were making a mess at that place. We felt very disturbed and after waiting there for around 10 minutes we decided to go back.

While returning our forest guide suddenly told the driver to stop the vehicle at the sandy river bed. After inspecting around some bushes, he called me to have a look at something. I got down from gypsy and to my utter surprise, I saw some distinct pugmarks of Leopard on the river bed. The guide told me, as per his calculation, the adult leopard must be 11-12 feet in length with a tail.

We waited there for around 40 minutes in anticipation of spotting some wild animals (especially the elephants), but the sighting was not in our destiny. As per our guide, Winter is the ideal season to see the migration of wild animals in Dooars.

We came back to our homestay which was located just beside the Jayanti River. One can spend an hour and an hour just by watching the river, Jayanti hills and clouds from this homestay’s balcony. At around 9 pm our dinner war served with Rice/Roti, Daal, Alu Bhaja, Alu-patol Curry & Chicken Curry.

Choto Mahakal Temple Hike

On the next day morning completing our breakfast with Puri-Sabji we started our journey to the Choto Mahakal temple which is adjacent to Bhutan Pahar. We had to cross the Jayanti river thrice, our Bolero crossed the river first time. But for the second time, it couldn’t because of the shallowness of the river. We crossed the river by foot helping each other and then started our hike through the forest with our local guide.

We were really amazed by the serenity and tranquillity of nature here. The birds were chirping, the stream was flowing at our right-hand side, the whole atmosphere will surely give you goosebumps. Then we crossed the stream very carefully for the third time and the current was pretty high there.

From here we climbed almost vertical stairs(some are bamboo made) uphill to reach the Mahakal cave where locals worship an idol of Lord Shiva. There was a little waterfall also but apart from this there was nothing special in Choto Mahakal, but the journey can be thrilling for the adventure seekers.

We did not go to Baro Mahakal as the trail was quite hard. So we did not take a risk to hike further. Hiking to Choto Mahakal temple was really a thrilling adventure in our Buxa Jayanti trip. We returned to our homestay after the hike and finished our lunch with Rice, Daal, Salad, Alu Soybean, and Fish Curry and took a power nap for 1 hour.

Core Buxa Jungle Safari

This was the ultimate thing of this Buxa Jayanti tour we were waiting for. We were very excited about the core forest safari at Buxa Jayanti. I did a double-check of my camera and lenses. Our forest department-owned gypsy that we booked 15 days prior to coming to Jayanti came at 3:15 pm.

We started for our most exciting core jungle safari in Buxa Tiger Reserve which starts from 3:30 pm . This game drive is carried out at the proximal bank of the Jayanti river. We had to show our permit (issued from Rajabhatkhawa Permit office previous day) at the beat office before entering into the core zone.

This side of the forest is much thicker as compared to the other bank of the river (where Chunia watchtower is situated). Our gypsy moved slowly through the trail in anticipation of sighting wild animals.

We crisscrossed every possible trial on that part of the forest but could not see any animals. Then we walked on the Bala river and observed the footprints of elephant herds that crossed the dry riverbed. Suddenly at a distance, we spotted 4 wild Indian bison crossing the riverbed.

While returning it was raining cats and dogs, so we had to leave the Buxa jungle safari early. I was totally disappointed and heartbroken about the experience, only one thing that gave me a pain relief is the color, smell and sound of rain-soaked core jungle of Buxa Jayanti. It was totally a different experience which I never expected.

Coming back to our homestay we did little chit chat with lodge people about their experiences with wild animals. At around 9 pm dinner was served with Roti, Alu Squash Sabji and Chicken Kosha.

Buxa jungle safari timings : 6:30 am(morning safari) and 3:30 pm(evening safari) Buxa jungle safari cost : 1500 INR (Gypsy cost 1200 INR, Guide charge 300 INR)

The next morning I woke up at 6 am. But the sky was totally cloudy from the morning. We were all set to go for another trek to Buxa fort after completing our breakfast, but all of a sudden the rain started and there was no sign of stopping it. So we had no other way except enjoying the rain with hot tea and Pakora from our balcony.

This time we were not disappointed because Jayanti is totally different while it’s raining. Cloud wrapped Jayanti hill, flowing Jayanti River, non-stop Rain and Tea – I was spellbound with this deadly combination of nature and enjoyed the beauty in solitude.

Though we couldn’t go to Buxa fort but here is a brief description for your reference. The century-old historic Buxa Fort is a 4 km uphill trek at an elevation of 2600 ft. Previously the fort was under Bhutan king, later it was used as a deportation camp of prisoners by the East India Company. This fort was also used as the refugee camp of Tibetan monk during China-Tibet turmoil.

Lepchakha is 3km away from Buxa Fort which is called “ Queen of Dooars ”. You can have a panoramic view of the Buxa Tiger Reserve from here. You will get a little bit touch of Bhutan here as the people here lived are Drukpa people who are basically Bhutanese in origin. Homestays are also available for the tourists to stay at night)

Pokhari Lake

The rain stopped at around 12 pm, so we started for our next destination Pokhari/Pukhri lake after our lunch at 3 pm. It was another trek of this Buxa Jayanti tour but quite steep, 5-6 km away from Jayanti. Buying 2 packets of puffed rice we started our trek with a local guide.

It took around 1 hr to reach the lake which is basically a sacred pond for both Hindus and Buddhists. The lake is not so spectacular but the serenity of nature will give you refreshment in your mind.

Another attraction of Pokhri lake is the large number of catfishes( magur ) and turtles, we fed them puffed rice that we brought with us. Spending near about 30 minutes we returned to our homestay

This was our last night at Buxa Jayanti. We were roaming around the nearby market in the evening and tasted veg momo from a roadside stall which was very cheap – 10 pieces for INR20. Later completing our dinner with Roti, Alu Dom and Paneer we went to the bed at 11 pm.

Phuentsholing

From yesterday night I was repeatedly checking Phuentsholing’s weather report which was showing a 60% chance of a thunderstorm. The sky was cloudy from the morning. We packed all our luggage and completed our breakfast with Bread, Butter and Omelette.

I took some snaps of our Jayanti homestay and its surroundings which I recommend to every traveler who seeks a budget hotel. For the last time, I inhaled the fresh airs of Buxa Jayanti to the fullest capacity of my lungs.

At around 10:15 am we started for Phuentsholing and reached at around 11:15 am via Hasimara- Jaigaon. Bhutan was the first-ever foreign country that I have visited with just 12000 INR . There was a massive traffic jam near the Bhutan Gate at Phuentsholling. The weather was also very hot and humid. We decided not to spend much time there as the departure time of our train Padatik Express(12378) was at 5:45 pm from Alipurduar.

We directly went to visit the “Gompha Monastery” or Karbandi Monastery . It is a very beautiful place to take some breathtaking snap. Some young monks were playing football in front of the main gate of the monastery.

The view of the Jaigaon town is really mesmerizing from here. The entire valley of Torsha river could be seen from there. And the blue hills of Bhutan is a breathtaking spectacle to behold.

We then started our journey towards Alipurduar Junction Railway Station. On the way, we stopped at a restaurant named “16 Ana” located near Alipurduar Court. We had our lunch from this famous restaurant.

There is a total of 16 Bengali food items that are served in a brass made thala or dish. Additionally one can order any special fish, chicken, mutton or paneer item. We tasted aar fish, prawn and mutton kosha. Each and every item was very delicious. It is a must-try restaurant while visiting Buxa Jayanti.

At last, we reached the station at 5 pm and bought some food for dinner. The return train journey started exactly at its scheduled time of 5:45 pm. The next day at around 7 am we reached Sealdah station.

Tale of 2 Backpackers

Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti – A trip to Wilderness in Dooars

India , West Bengal

Jayanti River in BUxa Tiger Reserve

Last Updated on: Mar 21, 2020

Buxa, Jayanti and Lepchakha hold a very special place in our hearts. This trip to Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti was our first trip to Dooars as well as North Bengal. We had visited these places even before we had explored Darjeeling. The Buxa Fort Trek was also our first introduction to the magical world of hiking and trekking.

Buxa is one of the most popular destinations of the Dooars region. The place is a part of the Buxa Tiger Reserve in the Jalpaiguri district of Bengal. The entire region is the part of the Buxa Tiger Reserve, one of the largest forested areas in Dooars. The place is also famous for the short uphill trek route to the historic Buxa Fort. Lepchakha is a small hamlet located on the hilltop and can be reached following the same trail taking to the Buxa Fort.

Jayanti River

Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve is located in the northeastern part of West Bengal bordering Bhutan. It has the largest forest area in the Dooars region covering an area of 759 sq km. The northern part of Buxa Tiger Reserve extends to the Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary of Bhutan just like the Manas National Park in Assam . This reserve area serves as an important elephant corridor between the forests of Bengal and Bhutan. Located on the foothills of the Lower Himalayas, the landscape of Buxa Tiger Reserve varies to a large extent.

The forest was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1983 . The number of tigers in Buxa Tiger Reserve was once found to be the second largest in West Bengal after Sunderbans. Today, however, the number of tigers is dwindling. Infact, some of the local residents of the area are of the opinion that there are hardly any tigers left at Buxa Tiger Reserve. We, for sure, do not know the actual fact. But we have never heard that any tourists have spotted tigers at Buxa.

The entry point of Buxa Tiger Reserve is at Rajabhatkhawa. When I heard the name first, I found it quite funny. If you translate it in Bengali, it literally means ‘the king ate rice’. Well, actually there is interesting folklore about this place. It is believed that the King of Coochbehar would visit the forests for royal picnics. Obviously, he would have his meals here, and hence Rajabhatkhawa became the name of the place.

There is a ticket counter at Rakabhatkhawa at the entrance of the Buxa Tiger Reserve from where you will get the tickets to enter the reserve area. After entering, a drive of about 10 km will bring you to a crossing known as the Buxa More. The road straight ahead will take you to Santalabari, the foothill. From Santalabari, an uphill trek route takes to the famous Buxa Fort. The trekking trail, if further continued will take you to Lepchakha and another one to Sinchula Pass in Bhutan.

A right turn will take you to Jayanti, a small and beautiful settlement beside Jayanti River. Jayanti is also a part of the Buxa Tiger Reserve and is about 5 km from Buxa More.

Entrance of Buxa Tiger Reserve at Rajabhatkhawa

Animals at Buxa Tiger Reserve

Tigers are quite rare at Buxa Tiger Reserve and I think sighting them would be a miracle. However other wild animals like the leopards, elephants, bison, spotted deer, barking deer, sambar and hog deer, jackals, hyenas and several other wild cats are found in abundance in the forest. Our forest guide told us that he had spotted leopards quite many times. But he was never lucky to spot a tiger till then! Animals are seen in abundance. Infact, the road from Rajabhatkhawa to Buxa More serves as an elephant corridor. A number of snakes including poisonous ones are also found in the forests of Buxa Tiger Reserve.

The forests of Buxa Tiger Reserve and the nearby villages are also the home to a large number of birds. Migratory birds like Common Teal, Gargani Teal, Large Whistling Teal, White-Eyed Poachared and others also make the area there home during the winters. Many birds can be seen on the banks of Jayanti and Raidak Rivers as well.

Jungle Safari at Buxa Tiger Reserve

Now that you are visiting a forest area, you would want to go for a jungle safari! Jungle safaris at Buxa Tiger Reserve start from Jayanti itself. The safari permits and guides are available at the Jayanti Range Office near the main market area. Here, you can even use your own car for the jungle safari. Otherwise, Gypsy vehicles are also available for booking. Local guides are also available for jungle safari who are quite knowledgeable about the area.

Dense jungle at Buxa Tiger Reserve

Jeep Safari at Buxa

There are a few jungle trails where the jeep can go involving about 17 km in total. The entry gate for the jeep safari is located near the main market area in Jayanti. Once you enter the forest area you will drive through the dusty jungle trail with thick foliage of trees all around. You might see a few deer, bison and elephants if you are lucky enough.

Jungle safaris are always a great experience even if you do not spot animals. The eerie silence amidst the trees, the grasslands and the lucky sighting of wildlife make them quite enjoyable. In the case of Buxa Tiger Reserve, we could hear only the incessant sound of crickets. We spotted a few deer and bison and some birds inside the jungle. Later we went beside the Bala River and then returned back.

Safari Timings:

6.00 am to 11.00 am and 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm

Only a limited number of vehicles are allowed for jungle safari inside the Buxa Tiger Reserve. On spot booking during the tourist season becomes a bit difficult. So night stay at Jayanti is recommended.

Cost of Jeep Safari: If you book the entire Jeep along with the guide, it might cost you around Rs.1200.00 (as of October 2019). It includes permits and guide fees.

Buxa Tiger Reserve jeep Safari

Chunia Watchtower Safari

Chunia Watchtower and the Bhutia Basti Watchtower lie across the Jayanti River on the opposite side of the Jayanti village. Both the watchtowers fall in the buffer zone of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. You can book a jeep safari from the Jayanti Range Office to the forest area where Chunia Watchtower is located. This forest is known as the Chunia Forests. From the watchtower, you can spot a number of wildlife like the elephants, bison and various types of deer. Elephants can also be spotted many times. You have to cross the Jayanti River bed on the jeep to the other side for this safari. I think this is the most exciting part of the safari.

Trek to the Pokhri Hill

The water body at Pokhri Hill in Buxa Tiger Reserve

Pokhri Hill is located about 4 km from Jayanti and you can take your car up to the base of the hill. Pokhri means pond and the name comes because of the presence of a pond on the hill. From the base, there is a trekking route of about 1.5 km through the dense forests. Taking a guide with you is a must for trekking to the Pokhri Hill. The jungle is dense and there might be a number of ways inside the forests.

There is a small lake in the midst of the forest area. The lake is considered to be quite sacred among the Buddhists and local community. There are a number of fishes and turtles inside the lake and you can feed them. Guide charge for the trek to Pokhri Hills is Rs 250.00.

The best part of our Buxa Jayanti trip was definitely our visit to Jayanti. The small village settlement inside Buxa Tiger Reserve is developed beside the Jayanti River. Jayanti is given the name of “Queen of Dooars”. After our visit to Jayanti, we totally agree on the given moniker. For Jayanti is simply beautiful. The small village, the riverside, the quaint houses and everything about Jayanti is lovely. But the most gorgeous is the Jayanti River.

The mesmerising Jayanti River

Infact, Jayanti River is the main attraction of this small village. You will hardly find water in the river other than the monsoon season. The riverbed is full of loose stones and boulders with a narrow stream of water flowing in the middle. Just opposite the river, you can see the Bhutan hills and the forests. These forests are the extended part of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The riverbed looks white and pristine and at the backdrop of the hills and forests, the meandering river looks just mesmerizing.

There is a broken bridge-like structure in the middle of the river. It seems there used to be an iron bridge there once upon a time. The entire place looks so romantic and lovely.

Even during the evening, the river looks mesmerizing. We would always remember the time spent at the banks of the Jayanti River. We simply sat there talking to each other and did not know where the time went by. We also walked on the riverbed, went near the broken bridge and spent some memorable moments there. The mornings are equally beautiful at Jayanti. We had seen many breathtaking sunrises at Sandakphu-Phalut and at Tiger Hill before. The sunrise at Jayanti was also special and extremely beautiful.

Broken Bridge in the middle of Jayanti River in Dooars - Dooars Tourism

Jayanti is located about 5 km from Buxa More . On the way to Jayanti, you have to cross the Bala River. There used to be a bridge here once upon a time, but now no more. The river remains dry most of the time except the monsoon and you can easily drive across it. But during monsoons, when the Bala River swells, Jayanti often gets cut-off from Buxa.

Jayanti has a small market area. There are about 38 villages in the entire Buxa Tiger Reserve area and Jayanti is one of them. Recently, eco-tourism has been developed here and tourism is proving to be a mode of income for the villagers in Jayanti. Many homestays are developed and many villagers are getting trained as guides for the wildlife safari at Buxa Tiger Reserve.

Mahakal Trek

Mahakal is located along the Jayanti River and is another great Dooars trek. Mahakal Cave is located about 13 km from Jayanti and the caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The trek route to Mahakal cave is through the dense forests inside the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The best time for the trek is during the winter season when the river is dry. During the monsoon the trek route becomes inaccessible.

Our Experience at Buxa Jayanti

We had visited Buxa and Jayanti while on our tour to Dooars. After our visit to Rongo , Jaldhaka and Lataguri, we were finally at Buxa. As I mentioned earlier, Jayanti was definitely the highlight of our trip. Here I will give the itinerary for Buxa Jayanti trip that we had followed. This might help you in planning your trip.

Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti Tentative Itinerary

Day 1: lataguri – jayanti.

Road from Rajabhatkhawa to Jayanti

We visited Buxa after our visit to Lataguri. We had hired a car for the entire Dooars trip. We started from Lataguri and arrived at Rajabhatkhawa by 10.00 am. We got our entry tickets for the car and ourselves and entered into the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

The road was quite good – pitch black and with thick forests at both sides. The continuous sound of crickets was the only sound that we could hear. Very soon we were at the Buxa More. We took the right and headed towards Jayanti.

The first thing we did was to book a safari the next day. The entire day, we spent near the Jayanti River. In the afternoon, we trekked to the Pokhri Hill and the evening was again spent by the Jayanti River.

Day 2: Jayanti

Sunset at Jayanti River

We went for an early morning safari inside the Buxa Tiger Reserve. Later in the day, we crossed the Jayanti River and visited the Chunia Watchtower on the other side. The rest of the day we spent exploring the village and by the Jayanti River.

Day 3: Jayanti – Buxa Fort – Lepchakha – Buxa Sadar Village

We started from Jayanti early in the morning and reached Santalabari, kept our car near the Government office there, took our bags and started our trek. To be honest, Buxa trek was our introduction to the world of trekking. We had initially thought that we would trek up to the Buxa Fort and come down again and go to Jayanti on the same day itself. But we did not know that we would be so tired after we reached Buxa Fort.

Entrance of Buxa Fort

We started our trek and reached the Buxa Fort after 2 hours of huffing and puffing. After reaching Buxa Fort, we spent some time there and then checked into a homestay, Later in the afternoon, we trekked to Lepchakha, the Drukpa village on the hilltop. Lepchakha is a beautiful place. We wished we had more time as we wanted to stay back in the beautiful village. But after watching the glorious sunset, we had to trek back to Buxa Fort. You will get the details of our Buxa Fort Trek and Lepchakha in the other article. We stayed back at Buxa Fort that day.

Day 4: Buxa Village  – Rakabhatkhawa – New Alipurduar

We started late in the morning and came down to Santalabari. From there, we took our car and started towards New Alipurduar Railway Station to catch our train back to Kolkata.

Children playing at Lepchakha

How to reach Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti?

The nearest Railway Station is New Alipurduar, about 15 km from Rajabhatkhawa. You can get a taxi or auto from New Alipurduar to Rajabhatkhawa. It will take about 15 minutes to reach there from the railway station. Jayanti is another 15 km from the entry gate. Buses ply from Jayanti to Rajabhatkhawa, but the timings are a bit erratic. It is better not to wait for buses when you are going towards Jayanti. During the return to Rajabhatkhawa, you can try for the buses.

The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, 180 km from Rajabhatkhawa. New Jalpaiguri is about 176 km from Rajabhatkhawa. You can hire a car from NJP or Bagdogra to reach Rajabhatkhawa or Jayanti.

There is a small railway station at Rajabhatkhawa as well. But no express train stops at this station. There are a few passenger trains running from Siliguri to Alipurduar that stops at Rajabhatkhawa.

Trek route from Buxa Fort to Lepchakha

Where to stay at Jayanti?

There are a number of homestays and lodges at Jayanti. West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDC) has a lodge at Rajabhatkhawa. You can book the Rajabhatkhawa Buxa Jungle Lodge online .

If you prefer to stay at Jayanti, then there are a number of private lodges there. Here are a few of them with contact numbers:

Banante : +91 9609931857 / 9230543807

Rover’s Inn: +91 9434014233 / 9434754349

What is the best time to visit Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti?

The best time to visit Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jayanti is between December to February. The weather remains cool in the morning and cold at night. Wildlife safaris are also enjoyable during this time.

June to September is the monsoon season and it rains very heavily during this time. Buxa Tiger Reserve remains closed between mid-June to mid-September. Jayanti often becomes inaccessible during this time.

Another good time to visit is during October and November. The weather remains cool, but the wildlife sighting becomes a bit poor due to post-monsoon growth.

You can also visit between March to May, but be prepared for a hot and humid climate. The days will be scorching and I don’t think even spending time beside the Jayanti River will be enjoyed during this time.

Buxa Jayanti : Monsoon Affair – A Tour and Travel Guide

bhutia-basti-watchtower-jayanti-river-buxa-tiger-reserve

History of Buxa Tiger Reserve

buxa-tiger-reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve or Buxa National Park lies in Alipurduar district of West Bengal. Its northern boundary runs along the international border with Bhutan. The Sinchula hill range lies all along the northern side of BTR and the eastern boundary touches Assam.

Buxa Tiger Reserve was established under Project Tiger in February 1983 and was the 15th Tiger Reserve of India. In 1992 Buxa was conferred the status of National Park. The name Buxa Tiger Reserve was coined from famous Buxa Fort.

Dolomite extraction used to be the main economic activity, but after the declaration of Tiger Reserve, it has come to halt.

Wildlife at Buxa Tiger Reserve :

About 67 mammal species are reported to thrive in the reserve, including 21 endangered species. Indian Gaur, Leopard, Elephant, Barking Deer, Sambar, Hog Deer and Wild Dog has found refuge at Buxa. The Chinese Pangolin and the reticulated regal python are endemic to the Buxa forests.

One of the oldest organizations of India – Bombay Natural History Society conducted a survey on birds of Buxa which mentions 500 different species are present at Buxa Forest. This year from 6th – 9th January 2019 Bird Festival was conducted at Buxa. Eminent wildlife photographers, naturalists and tourists gathered in huge numbers. Avian species like Great Hornbill, Serpent Eagle, Brown Fish Owl, Honey Buzzard, Scarlet Minivet, Hooded Pitta, Indian Roller are often seen at Buxa.

The Journey to Buxa and Jayanti Begins:

I started off from Coochbehar around 7.00 am in the morning on the auspicious day of “Buddha Purnima”(18th May 2019). Within 1 hr I was at the Buxa main entrance.

Permit to visit Buxa Tiger Reserve is issued from the counter adjacent to the Buxa main entrance. The permit is valid for 2 days. Vehicle entry fee is Rs 300/- and entry fee of Rs 100/- per person(for Indian Adult), Rs 300/-(for Foreigners). No entry fee for below five years of age. Also, the entry fee of the driver is not required.

Through the beautiful stretch of the lush green forest, I reached Jayanti. I stayed at a home-stay on the banks of Jayanti River. The home-stay had very basic amenities. USP of the home-stay was the picturesque view of the Jayanti River and on the backdrop was the Bhutan Hills.

Chunia Watchtower Trail:

chunia-watchtower-buxa-tiger-reserve

After Lunch, I took the trail to Chunia Watchtower. I was accompanied by the most knowledgeable and jovial guide of Buxa – Kurban Khan. Kurban was my companion for most of my jungle adventures in and around Buxa Tiger Reserve.

The trail to Chunia Watchtower is through buffer area of Buxa Tiger Reserve. The trail is known for Leopard sightings. There is another watchtower in the name of “Bhutia Basti Watchtower” on the way to Chunia.

thick-knee-buxa-tiger-reserve

We waited for a while but no signs of the elusive cat can be heard or seen. Gradually we headed for Chunia Watchtower. The view from the watchtower is breathtaking.

This year due to early showers, all forest bound small streams are bubbling with water. An early torrential rain was a great boon for the fragile habitat. Bushes and trees have grown thick and fast and there is ample food of wild animals in the forest. It seems animals are in the core area of the Buxa due to availability of the profuse amount of food and water.

As the sun was going down to welcome a full moon night, we decided to call it a day and return to our abode.

jayanti-buxa-tiger-reserve

Suddenly the weather became bad and dark clouds were hovering over us. It started to rain. I munching snacks and hot pakoras at the balcony of my room and wondering about the powerful nature. It seemed like thunder clouds would burst on me.

There was a power cut. Locals told me there is no chance to restore power tonight. Electricity guys can fix it up tomorrow late noon. I had my dinner in moonlight overlooking the Jayanti River. Thousands of words are not enough to describe the beauty of Jayanti on a full moon night.

I slipped to bed early. Needed good rest to rejuvenate me for tomorrow’s Core Jungle Safari.

Safari to Chunia Watchtower is allowed in private vehicle with a guide. It is suggested to opt for Innova or Bolero, it may be difficult for small cars to ply across the rugged terrain of Jayanti River bed.

Jungle Safari at Buxa Tiger Reserve :

buxa-tiger-reserve-core-safari

Four vehicles are allowed in the morning and in the evening for core safari. There is no provision for online booking. There is a huge demand for core safari during peak season in the months of November to April. Therefore, it is suggested to pre-book safari from any local acquaintance.

Kurban reached to the lodge sharp at 6.00 am. The forest was wet and damp. Tress had fallen and the roads were blocked at many places due to yesterday’s storm. Dense canopy engulfed the whole forest and it was really difficult to spot any wildlife. The only chance was if any wild animal crosses the road or stands adjacent to the road and is kind enough to give a passage to its private life.

We returned from safari around 8.30 am.

Cost of Jeep Safari – Rs 1600/- Duration – 2 hrs (maximum 6 persons are allowed in a vehicle)

Pokhri Trail at Jayanti:

pokhri-buxa-tiger-reserve

I had my breakfast and checked out from the home-stay at 10:00 am. My next destination was Pokhri.

Pokhri is a small wetland on high altitude is home to several species of fish(a large number of catfish) and turtles. The trek from Jayanti to Pokhri passes through the dense forest. This site lies close to the Core-Buffer boundary. Tashigaon Watch Tower is on the way. Pokhri is considered holy both Hindus and Buddhists.

Kurban was there with me for the Pokhri Trail. We took “Muri”( puffed rice) feed the catfish and turtles Pokhri.

The vehicle goes up to to a certain point, and we need to walk for a kilometre to reach Pokhri. But the trail is steep and there is virtually no road.

The water of the lake never dries. It is frequented by elephants during the dry season. The trail was closed for the tourists in the month of April 2019 as an elephant herd was stationed around Pokhri.

We scattered “Muri” for the catfishes. The size of the catfishes is gigantic. They compete amongst each other to get a chunk of its share.

I believe in the aphorism “Every tour makes our soul young”. So, with a young soul, I returned back to Coochbehar.

Jayanti Dooars - Complete Tour & Travel Guide

Jayanti Dooars- Located on the edge of Buxa Forest is a quaint forest village along with the River Jayanti. Jayanti River forms a natural border with the Bhutan hills, the hills on the Eastern Side of the river are known as the Jayanti Hills, and the small villages on the western side known as Jayanti villages are named after the river Jayanti. 30km from Alipurduar Jayanti is often referred to as the 'Queen of Dooars' because of its astounding view, fascinating lush greenery and tranquil ambiance.

Jayanti can be visited with ease if you opt for North Bengal Guide's affordable Dooars Tour Packages that include all the latest amenities. You can get to see our travel itineraries in the holiday packages section.

History of Jayanti in Dooars

During British rule, Jayanti became one of the major epicenters of the mining and tea industries in India. It became extremely important to British India's finances. However, it became difficult for the British to supply their commodities as the large European tea and mining industry grew around Jayanti. The construction work of the Jayanti Railway started in 1901 after they asked the Maharaja of Cooch Behar, Nripendra Narayan. Once Maharaja nodded yes, the British built a steel-made railway bridge over the Jayanti River to transport dolomites.

After the independence of India, the passenger train service began. This passenger train used to depart Alipurduar Junction at 08:30 pm and arrive at Jayanti at 9:30 pm. The next day the passenger train used to depart Jayanti at 8 am and arrive at Alipurduar junction at 9 am. This historic railway service stopped once the Buxa Tiger Reserve was announced in the year 1986. The bridge above the Jayanti River is now in complete ruins. You will get to see only some pillars of it as the river has become shallow due to excess pebbles and rocks.

Jayanti Dooars Sightseeing & Tourist Spot

Beneath the vibrant ecology is the Dooars oldest town Jayanti village but in the present time you can't see the town instead what you see is a village that is slowly fading away as time passes by. In Jayanti nature has blossomed and is at its apex where the forest is green and the wildlife is abundant. Away from the tedious and monotonous city lifestyle, a trip to Jayanti offers a perfect destination for a laid-back holiday amidst nature it's a place where time seems to have slowed down its fast pace. Although the river Jayanti remains dry most of the year when the water level rises, listening to the alluring sound of the flowing river, chirping of unknown birds, sweet fragrance of nature and refreshingly cool breeze at Jayanti will make you feel completely rejuvenated. The pebbles along the river bed of Jayanti add unmatched beauty to the place.

The journey towards the Jayanti in itself is an amazing experience driving through the dense Buxa Tiger Reserve has allured many travelers to travel to Jayanti. Spotting a herd of elephants, Barking Deer, or plenty of Peacocks are the most common sights on the way to Jayanti. A sacred place called Pokhari is nearby Jayanti apart from its religious belief this spot is a great place to see the large number of big-sized Magur and Turtle in the waters of the Pokhri and the beauty of this place has certainly something which has refreshing effect. For the Hindus as well as Buddhists, this place holds enormous religious significance. Getting to Pokhri requires a walk through the forests. This splendid lake is around 4 km away from Jayanti.

Another interesting place where you can go is Mahakal Cave located near the Bhutan border this cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and many visitors visit this cave during Maha Shivratri. Mahakal is a renowned tourist attraction as well as a prominent pilgrimage site. It is a cave dedicated to Lord Shiva that is located near the Bhutan border. The Mahakal cave trip through the forest is known for its bird watching. You can also hike to the neighboring Bala Riverbed, which is an excellent site for bird watching, especially peacocks, but don't linger there until late at night because it's a leopard hotspot. Bhutia Basti, located 1.5 kilometers from Jayanti, is another fantastic place to see elephants.

Accommodation in Jayanti Dooars

Buxa Tiger Reserve – Jayanti

Buxa Tiger Reserve or Buxa National Park set up at the north-eastern corner of West Bengal bordering Bhutan and Assam in the Alipurduar District is a protected Forest Reserve of Dooars. Buxa Tiger Reserve was created in 1983 as the 15th tiger reserve in India. Before getting the status of National Park, the dense forest of Buxa was once well-known for dolomite mining in the North Bengal Region. Spread over an area of 745 sq km, Buxa is a famous tourist place in North Bengal and Dooars Region. Buxa derived its name from the famous Buxa Fort. Buxa Fort is a historic fort sited midst the dense forest used by the British rulers of India as a high security prison and detention camp in the 1930s. Buxa National Park has a great collection of rare orchids and medicinal plants making it a must visit places in Dooars for the botany enthusiast traveling in North Bengal region.

The diversity of mammals in Buxa Tiger Reserve ranks second highest among all the Tiger Reserves of India. Apart from Bengal Tiger, there many exquisite wild animals like leopard, Wild Dogs, Malayan Giant Squirrels, Mongooses, Asian Elephant, Gaur, Hog Deer, Wild Buffalo, 3 varieties of Pythons, Monitor Lizard and different species of land tortoises in Buxa National Park. The best way to spot all these exquisite wildlife is by indulging in Buxa Tiger Reserve Safari. The Buxa Tiger Reserve Safari is one of the famous tourist activities of Buxa National Park.

Jayanti is a small picturesque forest village at the fringe of the Buxa forest. Located along the Jayanti River, which forms a natural border with the Bhutan hills, the hills on the Eastern Side of the river and the small village on the western side are also named after the river as Jayanti Hills and Jayanti village respectively. With its serene ambiance and pictorial view Jayanti is often referred as the “Queen of Dooars”. This forest village is about 30 Km from Alipurduar.

Jayanti village is one of the oldest towns of the Dooars region but in present time you can not see the town but instead what you see is a decaying village within a vibrant ecology. The nature has thrived here, the forest is green and the wildlife is aplenty. Although in the deep jungle sighting is not very common. A tour of Jayanti, away from the monotonousness of city life is an ideal leisure holiday destination where time seems to have slowed down its fast pace. Music of the swift flowing Jayanti River, chirping of unknown birds, sweet fragrance of nature and refreshingly cool breeze at Jayanti will make you feel completely rejuvenated. Though the river remains dry for most of the year but its white beds with pebbles all around imparts an unmatched beauty to the place. Way to Jayanti through the densely forested Buxa Tiger Reserve is a fascinating experience and another huge attraction of Jayanti tour. Meeting a herd of Elephant or Spotted Deer or plenty of Peacocks are most common sights on the way to Jayanti. Nearby Jayanti there is a Pokhari which is considered to be scared by the local people a great place to see the large number of big-sized Magur and Turtle in the waters of the Pokhri and the beauty of this place has certainly something which has a refreshing effect. Mahakal Cave is another interesting place where you can go located near Bhutan border this cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and many visitors visit this cave during Maha Shibratri.

Jayanti is known for its diversified and rich variety of wild life and scenic beauty. Encircled by the forested hills while overlooking the beautiful white river bed, Jayanti is a place where you can immerge yourself in the beauty of Mother Nature while listening to the alluring chirping of the birds and being mesmerized by the sunset over the Jayanti river.
