19 Most Amazing Cafes & Restaurants in Varkala

Varkala is a popular tourist destination in Kerala, attracting travelers from all over the world. It is known for its stunning beaches, cliffside views, and laid-back vibes. Besides this, Varkala is also famous for cozy cafes overlooking picturesque cliffs and trendy restaurants serving delicious local cuisine.

Having spent a month in Varkala across two visits and trying almost every other cafe and restaurant, I have curated this list of the best places to eat in Varkala. 

The first 3 cafes were my fav, but there are different cafes to serve everyone’s needs.

Best Cafes and Restaurants in Varkala

1. sun francisco.

The Sun Francisco Cafe has to be my favorite cafe in Varkala. It had the best sea views, the staff was always friendly and the food was top-notch. Do not ignore the starred items on the menu; I tried most of them, and they were delicious. You can also work from the cafe whilst watching some of the best sunset views.

Price for two : ₹600 -₹ 800

Location : Northcliff, Varkala, Kerala

Things to try at Sun Francisco : Snickers shake, thali, bowls, roasted egg with Dosa, Chicken 65

Timings : 7:30 am – 11 pm

2. True Thomas

True Thomas is just behind Sun Francisco in the list of best cafes in Varkala, because it doesn’t have a sea view and is a little away from the cliff. The food here is amazing and you can find both North Indian and South Indian dishes. Their thali is very delicious too and is way too much quantity for one person. They have some really good juices and shakes. The place also has a nice ambiance and is work-friendly. The best part is the Jhol Momo ie. Momos dipped in soup. I haven’t had a Soup momo that delicious anywhere else. 

They also made use of old sewing machines to make the tables which was a very unique concept. Another unique point was they had employees that are deaf and dumb. 

PS: They always run out of Jhol Momo or the chef rarely prepares them.

3. Little Tibet

Little Tibet, just as their name suggests is famous for its Tibetan cuisine like the momo, thukpa, thenthuk, and a variety of other dishes. They have the best momo in Varkala, which you can not miss. They have an amazing view and during the weekends you’ll need to get there sooner because all the tables get occupied quickly.

Things to try at Little Tibet : Momos, thukpa, thenthuk

Timings : 11 am – 11 pm

4. Abba Restaurant

Abba is one of the few restaurants where you can not go wrong with the food! The place has a variety of food options and an amazing view of the sea. And because of these reasons, it’s very tough to find a table here. Since the place is always crowded you will find a delay in service and at times remind the server multiple times about your order.

Things to try at Abba Restaurant : Israeli food, hello to the Queen, lasagna, and indian food.

5. Aum Cafe

The Aum cafe has to be one of those hidden spots I’m glad to discover. As soon as I saw Vietnamese coffee on their menu I knew I had to try it and now this will be my coffee spot for all my future trips. I haven’t tasted such amazing Vietnamese coffee in Varkala anywhere. Some other things to try there are salad and vegetarian food in general. 

They have an amazing ambiance and one of the best sea views. The servers are also very good with their service and the music they play.

6. Inda Cafe

Inda Cafe is one of the most famous cafes in Varkala all for the right reasons. If you want to have the best pizza in Varkala, you have to try it at Inda Cafe. The place also offers some amazing breakfast and is a great spot to work from. The only things I didn’t like about the place are the indoor seating which gets way too hot during the summer and the cats. I mean in general it’s nice to have cats around but when they jump onto your plate and try to eat from there, I’m sure not everyone will like that.

Things to try at Inda Cafe : Pizza(any), banana pancakes,  omelette

Timings : 8:30 am – 10 pm

7. Cafe Del Mar

This was my favorite spot on my first Varkala trip. They have some amazing breakfast options to try, but my fav is the cold coffee and the carrot or banana cake which you should not miss. Del Mar also offers some amazing sunset views from their rooftop.

Price for two : ₹500 -₹ 700

Location : N Cliff Rd, near helipad, Varkala

Things to try at Cafe Del Mar : English breakfast, iced latte, banana/carrot cake

8. Rabbit Cafe

Rabbit Cafe is famous for its juices and drinks. You will also find Akash, who is the most funniest server in Varkala. The place is a great spot to work from and plays some amazing music. One other thing that you should try is the dessert here, especially “Hello to the Queen”

Timings : 8 am – 10 pm

9. God’s Own Country Kitchen

God’s country kitchen has to be the best spot for seafood in Varkala. They have a variety of fresh seafood items to choose from and you can not miss garlic prawns. They also have live music every night which makes the place even more lively.

Things to try at God’s Own Country Kitchen : Biryani, Seafood(Any)

Timings : 8 am – 10:30 pm

10. Trip is Life

If you’ve seen a few reels around Varkala, you might have seen a cafe with infinite sea views. That’s Cafe Trip is Life for you! They have a great ambiance and views of the sea. The food is quite good there too and if you want to see the sunset, go an hour earlier to catch your spot. 

They are one of the best cafes on the south cliff of Varkala.

Price for two : ₹800 -₹ 1000

Location : South Cliff, Perumkulam Aaliyirakkam Road, Varkala

Things to try at Trip is Life : Chicken and cheese sandwich, nachos jalapeno, frappe

Timings : 7 am – 10 pm

Lumuma is the only Vegan cafe on the north cliff in Varkala. The place is very ambient and reflects the green colors. Mostly famous among tourists since the price is on the upper side but you can not miss the coffee and bowls here. Instead of sitting down, you should try the view from the first floor. This has to be one of my top spots to view the sunset from in Varkala.

12. Claffouti Restaurant

Claffouti is one of the best family restaurants in Varkala with some amazing sea views. They serve all sorts of cuisine and the price is also very reasonable. The quantity that they serve and their service too is really good. If you want to have a great time with your family without spending a lot, Claffouti is the place you have to visit.

Things to try at Claffouti Restaurant : Indian food(any) and pasta 

Timings : 8:30 am – 10:30 pm

13. Darjeeling Cafe

Are you shocked that Darjeeling Cafe is so low on this list? Well, I will tell you about that too, but let’s start with why you should visit Darjeeling Cafe. They have one of the best sea views in Varkala, when I last visited Darjeeling Cafe in 2022, it was still a small place and had hippie vibes. With their new building, they have lost the authenticity that Darjeeling Cafe had earlier. Another thing I noticed was they had asked us to make a minimum bill of 2000 if we wanted to sit there, which was quite absurd. 

I loved the views, but would I go there again? Maybe not.

Timings : 7am – 11pm(On weekends open until 2-3am)

14. Cafe Italiano

Cafe Italiano is one of the best cafes in Varkala with great ambiance, especially their lighting at night is enough to make you want to visit! The place offers some amazing food with really nice sea views. I was unhappy with their service because I was a solo traveler and they catered to my orders very late.

Price for two : ₹700 -₹ 900

Things to try at Cafe Italiano : Pasta and  lasagna

Timings : 10:30 am – 11 pm

15. Soul Food Cafe

One thing that the south cliff has is unobstructed sea views. Soul Cafe is another cafe on the South Cliff that offers some delicious food and has some very chill vibes. You can just relax and soak in the views at the cafe. Don’t forget to try the pineapple ginger juice here, it was my favorite. They do have limited items on the menu.

Things to try at Soul Food Cafe : Mezze Platter, Quesadilla, Pineapple and Ginger Juice

Timings : 8 am – 9 pm

16. Juicy Cafe

If you’re staying in Varkala for a longer duration you can not always have food from the cafe, it is just not economical. That’s where Juicy Cafe comes to the rescue, you will find the most authentic Kerala-style food here and the price too is very reasonable. From breakfast to kadla curry, everything is delicious here.

Price for two : ₹100 -₹ 300

Location : Bureau Junction, North Middle Cliff, near Kuttikattu temple, Varkala

Things to try at Juicy Cafe : Anything and everything, especially their dosa for breakfast

Timings : 6 am – 9 pm

17. Sandy Bay Cafe

Sandy Bay Cafe is the only cafe at the famous Black Beach of Varkala. While their food is great they are majorly known for hosting the best night parties in Varkala. If you want to enjoy the best nightlife in Varkala you have to come here. 

Price for two: ₹500 -₹ 700

Location : Near Odayam Juma Masjid Edava

Things to try at Sandy Bay: Pasta and starters

Timings: 8am – 11:30pm(When hosting a party until 12:30am)

18. Tickety Boo

I was lucky to come across this unique cafe/restaurant, they have two outlets one on the north cliff and the other one closer to Inda Cafe. They serve some amazing breakfasts for a more reasonable price. The uniqueness was they also employed people with disabilities.

19. Bindu’s Cafe

Back in 2022 during my first trip, Bindu’s cafe was just starting, and not many people knew about it. Now in 2024, everyone knows of this coffee spot. They offer some amazing coffee and sunset views. Even in the morning you can come and have your first coffee while enjoying the sea views.

Location : Black Beach, Thiruvambadi Rd, Varkala

Timings : 7 am – 9 pm

We loved this cafe and the setup so much so that we visited twice for lunch. Clearly, a lot of thought and money has gone into the design. It's very European in feel but sometimes you just need some familiarity. Set in a large plot... with stunning views down to the beach below the cliffs. They have even planted up the cliffs and no rubbish in sight. The main Varkala cliff could learn a thing or two from these guys. The food was delicious but not cheap by Indian standards and not much less than UK prices tbf. Felt the large lawn area could benefit from a swimming pool and then they would really attract visitors for the day and generate more income through food and drink sales. More

The food is delicious especially the smoked chicken sausage, the Kerala prawn curry, and the classic sundae. Would have loved to try out the pancakes, the caramelized apple cake etc etc too. The view from the cafe, of the beach, vies with the best you... can find anywhere in the world! Just couldn't get enough of it. Probably one of the best cafes I have been to. And run by a very helpful friendly team with an ever smiling manager, Promod. A must visit. More

The peaceful vibe with ocean front view from the south cliff is immaculate. It makes me smile when I remember having my breakfast there. They have steps accessing the beach down though the beach needs a little cleanup or management needs to strict rules for... garbage disposal IMO. Otherwise I would still recommend this place for everyone who are coming to visit Varkala ☺ More

Amazing ambience and great food. The service is a bit slow but the food is worth the wait. Pati was a great host. Would suggest going in the evening, the view of the sunset is worth it.

Yummy continental food with cliff.sea view. We were here for dinner. It has wide open seating and small indoor seating area to. Food presentation was also beautiful. Overall decent place for having continental food.

Outstanding experience. The food tastes and is presented almost like a premium 5 star restaurant. It's an infinite view cafe ..just amazing to sit there and watch the sea. .super scenic We visited once and then ended up having all our meals there ... Evenings... are absolutely romantic and stunning More

Spot is absolutely beautiful but they can do a lot more Food though the menu not that elaborate was ok Absolute negative is the staff right from the manager to the.waiter not even know how to speak courteously enough…has to improve

We loved this cafe and the setup so much so that we visited twice for lunch. Clearly, a lot of thought and money has gone into the design. It's very European in feel but sometimes you just need some familiarity. Set in a large plot... with stunning views down to the beach below the cliffs. They have even planted up the cliffs and no rubbish in sight. The main Varkala cliff could learn a thing or two from these guys. The food was delicious but not cheap by Indian standards and not much less than UK prices tbf. Felt the large lawn area could benefit from a swimming pool and then they would really attract visitors for the day and generate more income through food and drink sales. More

The food is delicious especially the smoked chicken sausage, the Kerala prawn curry, and the classic sundae. Would have loved to try out the pancakes, the caramelized apple cake etc etc too. The view from the cafe, of the beach, vies with the best you... can find anywhere in the world! Just couldn't get enough of it. Probably one of the best cafes I have been to. The peaceful vibe with ocean front view from the south cliff is immaculate. It makes me smile when I remember having my breakfast there. They have steps accessing the beach down though the beach needs a little cleanup or management needs to strict rules for... garbage disposal IMO. Otherwise I would still recommend this place for everyone who are coming to visit Varkala ☺ More

This time, we turned our gaze to Varkala, a beach town in Kerala . Located at a two-hour drive from Alleppey, this laid-back town is the ideal vacation destination if you’re looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Vogue spoke to Aniket Karia, founder at All Heart, a health-conscious food brand, for his recommendations from the array of cafes and shacks that pepper the streets at Varkala. Ate here a lot on our visit. The food is reasonably priced and quite tasty. They do an especially good bruschetta. They have a little bakery counter with pretty decent lemon loaf and banana bread (makes a good cheap in room breakfast in the mornings).... They are also one of the few places you can get real ice cream- note the mango ice cream is creamy and delicious. The coconut is terrible, it is icy vanilla ice cream with a couple chunks of coconut stuck in it. Tastes nothing like coconut. They also charge more for this but don’t make that distinction on the menu. More

This place has a nice atmosphere. We initially went to have the excellent coconut smoothies that were so tempting, that and a choice of cakes and pastries...very enjoyable. We were less impressed with the cooked food choice which was vaguely edible didn’t quite hit the... mark. My Seafood Risotto was actually quite disappointing. We discovered better restaurants along the strip and feel that it was better than average but certainly not very good. Very friendly staff. More

Lovely little shack on the north cliff, Varkala. Started off with Odayam prawns, which was pan fried with local spices and coconut. The pizza was OK! Couldn't resist my temptation - I can leave pizaas but it won't leave me! Washed it all down with... beer! They do not accept cards or payment through UPI. Had to go all the way to the town to withdraw cash. Left my better half on the table. While I was gone, they assumed that we had finished and turned off the lights and fans for the table. And guess what, I hadn't even paid! I know they like to cater to foreigners, but hey we didn't do anything wrong! More

We were feeling so hot and went to have few drinks and the staff insisted that we have to order some food also and they won't just serve drinks alone and that too in a rash manner. Such a behaviour is not expected from a... staff of hospitality segment. Friends, if you are visiting india looking for a relaxing time avoid this restaurant as there behaviour will contaminate the beauty of varkala. I would not recommend people to visit this restaurant. Seeing this behaviour our entire group went to the near by resturant , I think it was abbe ( a greenish themed resturant) and we were treated courteously by the staff. If you want people to visit your place and business to do well natural beauty is not enough, behaviour has to be proper. More

Came across Cafe Del Mar during our walk on Varkala cliff. We were in fact searching for a place to sit & relax, enjoy the views and have some good food. Luckily stumbled upon on this cafe which is in a superb location wherein you... can have a relaxed meal, enjoy the views of sea and laze around for some time. We were surprised by the taste of breakfast items served and they had a decent variety! Definitely a place to stop by to enjoy the food and views. More

We decided to visit Cafe del Mar after reading many reviews, and chose it for breakfast on our second day in Varkala. Our breakfast took 50 minutes to arrive, which I think is a ridiculously long time for an English breakfast and Nutella crepes. The... crepes were good, but my hash brown was completely burnt. The location is great and you have a lovely view of the beach, but you need to be prepared for a long wait for your food. More

I ordered for some food and smoothies. Smoothies took more than 25 minutes to come and food took over 45 minutes and this is at 4PM when the restaurant wasn't even busy at all. Staff is rude and Mannerless. Moreover, when the smoothies came it... was hot and the food was cold. Tasteless beverages and food. Price is like a fine dine restaurant and food tastes like Below Average Dhaba. AVOID IT. More

A good place that serves perfectly good food - we had a Prawn curry and a veg curry and both were good and freshly cooked. The prawns were smaller than the fine big tiger / jumbo ones seen at the entrance but it was good... and had an excellent view out over the cliffs. I went here after seeing the Google reviews. Biriyani was good. But the butter fish was the biggest disappointment. It had no taste and it was costly too. There were only waiters and the waiting time was more. When asked they said they will prepare... fresh biriyani for each order not sure how true it is for each order they go and start cooking? More

We went to this casual dining restaurant on 21 Nov 2023 for lunch. We had reached by 1400 hrs and there was no waiting period rather it was kind of deserted at that time. Restaurant 2 floors. There is no separate parking but parking is... available in general for visitors of Varkala beach and is plentiful. Ambience wise place has a basic decor and second floor is open with a awesome view of the sea beach. (7/10). It has adequate seating and can accommodate good number of people , and very importantly does not appear congested (8/10). Service was prompt and My orders arrived hot and in reasonable amount of time. (7/10). Price of dishes is fine. During this visit we tried Seafood Thupka, Bruschetta, fish curry, plain basmati rice and orange juice. Taste wise they were fine. Quantity wise they were filling for two - three persons.(8/10). washroom was clean. All payment options were available. Overall a very fine experience (8/10). More

I strongly recommend this cafe for a morning breakfast, we tried spicy chicken tikka wrap, Steak breakfast, English breakfast, 3 Cheese Omlette and Cafe Americano. All was good. It was a wonderful experience visiting Cafe Del Mar. I would have given it a 5 but for the fact that a small amount of money had to be paid in cash (and that invariably means tax evasion). On entrance one staff member/manager didn’t seem so happy tho the views and food made up for that. There’s downstairs and upstairs for better views. My favourite spot to eat on the cliff. The food is delicious, big portions, always tasty. The view is spectacular. Two of my favourites mixed fruit, muesli, curd and honey and veg briyani!

Loved the food, value for money, and service. The view of the ocean whilst you're eating dinner, and the fresh sea food that had been caught that day. meant we kept going back. Thanks to Pinto our waiter who was great, 10/10 for service.

I'm Italian. If you are looking for italian food, steer clear from this place. The menus are falling to pieces and have misspellings, the pizza is half the size of other restaurants and it looks and tastes more like a flat bread with some tomato... on. The home tagliatelle are half portions and overcooked. The lights upstairs are cold led killing the ambiance. The waiters can't reccomend any food because "they never ara it". It's run by indians that don't care about service and reputation , not by Italians More

We came this place because of it’s name as you can see. We want to order fungi pizza and some homemade pasta . As we arrived we saw the pizza was not good in the next table they strongly say not to order the pizza... . So we just had pasta . I asked for pesto but it was terrible the spaghetti was so cheap quality and pesto was not fresh at all . Pasta was undercook and served with bad presentation. The stuff was also okey i asked him to take the pasta back and make the new one , but they do not care just added little more pesto and gave me the same one . No do go there if u looking for some Italian food . Just no . More

I have gone here 3 times as of now and has gotten the same experience everytime, with yesterday's experience being the worst of them all prompted me to write this review. The waiters of the "best cafe in varkala" apparently don't care if you're are... sitting there for hours and wont come to take your order when you call out to them and if they do (and if you are lucky enough to get noticed) they speak in a tone which is always impolite and harsh.i had guests over from outside Trivandrum who got offended and wanted to move on to someother place. When we complained to the person sitting in the bill counter, his excuse was that they are short on staff and hence all this. While we were moving out from the cafe, we overheard the waiter telling a group of 8 people "we are full, please leave and look for a place somewhere else", which felt downright offensive and the group which were northindians looked shocked. Literally the worst service i have ever had in Thiruvananthapuram, that too from a restaurant which is apparently the best in Varkala.We later went down to Darleejing cafe which proved to have much better ambience, great service and food. Me and few of my friends went there during last week of December. We were pretty late to reach there but there were a few tables and the balconies occupied. The cashier was there a table apart from where we were and have given us... a few smiles already. Each of us went and washed our hands and came back at the table and waited for pretty long time. Then we went to the cashier desk and asked him whether someone will come or not. Then he was pretty rude and said the kitchen has been closed already There were 5 people sitting 3 metres away from him and he didn't had the manners to tell us that they were closed for half an hour. The ambience is not worth the service. All the staff are extremely rude and impolite. Harsh language was used and food was denied as well. I was asked to move out of the restaurant if I didn't order more than a cup of coffee as it was business hours and I was blocking a table ! It felt like the cafe did a favor to me by offering a cup... of coffee. Didn't see this arrogance towards foreigners. Looks like indians are not their preferred customers. I visited this place on my first day of Kerala trip for the lunch. I went with a friend whom I met at Zostel. The place has very lovely vibes and nice beach views. We had some drinks and pizza. Everything tasted very average though.... It is situated on Varkala cliff. Cost - 800 bucks for pizza and two drinks More

The visit to the cliff was last minute, but we thought we will hnagout and have few chilled beers. It took some while for the waiter to notice us. But it was not a crowded day. After ordering the food we asked for beer. We... had to remind the person twice to bring the beer. Food was good tasty and had good portion. But beer was not good at all. More

Nice vibe place. We found it a lil difficult to reach the place but found it with some local help. Limited but good veg options. Doubt if jain is available. Overall a good experience. Well priced too
