Carmel-by-the-Sea is an unusual town. There are no street lights, parking meters, or even addresses for its quaint houses. 

Carmel’s solution to the problem of cracked pavements causing tripping hazards? They’ve banned high heels.

Until the 1980s, ice cream was outlawed in the city’s downtown because it was too messy. 

That was a step too far for famous Carmel resident Clint Eastwood. He ran a mayoral election campaign on an ice cream platform and promptly repealed the law when he won.

Quirky as the town may seem, Carmel is doing a great job of preserving everything special about this Central California Coast community, balancing its outstanding natural beauty with a vibrant downtown.

What I love most about Carmel is its all-season appeal. Unlike many seaside towns, Carmel is still vibrant and welcoming in the winter. 

Many of the hotels and restaurants feature cozy fireplaces, so you can enjoy the fresh ocean air without the chill. 

With beaches straight out of a postcard, houses straight out of a storybook, and food from out of this world, Carmel has everything you need for a fun weekend seaside trip .

Road trip the 17-mile drive.

Take a mini road trip along the 17-Mile Drive for outstanding scenery, beautiful beaches, and spectacular homes. 

The 17-Mile Drive is one of the top-rated things to do in Carmel and can easily be completed in a few hours.

Most people drive this scenic route but it’s also fun to rent an electric bicycle and cruise along the coastline on a guided tour. 

Famous stops along the way include Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Lone Cypress, and Spanish Bay Beach.

There’s a fee to enter this exclusive neighborhood, but at $11.25 I’d still consider it a good value for the trip. 

And, if you make a stop for lunch at Pebble Beach Resort and show your gate receipt to your server, they’ll knock the fee off the cost of your meal.

The beautiful Carmel Beach is perfect for beginner surfers with areas that have gentler waves. 

Join the locals and learn to ride the waves with a surf lesson. Take a group, family, or one-on-one lesson with Carmel Surf Lessons , with all equipment provided.

All levels are welcome. If you’re a pretty experienced surfer, there’s always room to learn something new. Plus, this is a good opportunity to test out the latest boards, as the team is always updating its equipment.

The church, built in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra, is the second oldest mission in Alta (higher) California. 

The bougainvillea-framed gardens, beautifully restored buildings, and peaceful courtyard make this place popular with photographers.

The Carmel Mission was said to be the personal favorite of Father Junipero Serra, who died here and was buried on the grounds.

Expect azure waters, a white-sugar sand beach, wildflowers, dramatic cliffs, and twisted pines clinging to the bluffs. 

Just three miles south of downtown Carmel on Highway 1, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is naturally popular with photographers, painters, and hikers . However, it’s also a great place to spot wildlife – both on and offshore.

Look out for rare plants and trees like the Monterey cypress, which grows here in one of two remaining groves in the world. 

You may also spot seals, sea lions, and sea otters, who like to hang out on the sunny rocks. There’s plenty of life beneath the waves too, and Point Lobos is a popular spot for SCUBA divers.

If you want to visit the picturesque China Cove with its beautiful arch formation and emerald-green waters, take the Bird Island Trail and walk down the steps down to the beach. 

If you have time, hike the Monterey Cypress Grove Trail too, and check out these rare and impressive trees. 

Play Golf at Pebble Beach

If you’re into golf, don’t miss your opportunity to play at the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links . 

The course is known for its beauty, difficulty, and history as the first public golf course to host the US Open.

Naturally, fame brings a high price and playing here is a costly endeavor. You’ll also want to make a reservation well in advance for this popular course.

Pebble Beach is home to not one but four world-class golf courses. Try the less famous-but-equally-beautiful Spyglass Hill, or The Links at Spanish Bay. 

There’s also Del Monte Golf Course, one of the oldest in the US, plus The Hay, a fun short course perfect for beginners and families.

Another option is to watch the pros at a tournament, like the Open or the Pro-Am. Or simply soak up the glamor, perhaps with a drink at The Bench, which overlooks the 18th hole.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is located inside the exclusive gated community of Pebble Beach, which requires a fee to enter. However, the gate toll is waived if you spend more than $35 at Pebble Beach Resort.

Get Inspired at an Art Gallery

Ocean Avenue, Carmel’s main drag, is full of art galleries. 

When you walk along this street, it’s easy to understand why, for over a century, artists have been drawn to this quirky little seaside town.

Whether you’re into fine art photography, abstract or oil paintings, or sculpture or mixed media, there’s a gallery showcasing some of the best art California’s Central Coast has to offer. 

And the prices are as diverse as the pieces, so there’s something for souvenir-hunters and fine art-admirers alike.

The Carmel Art Association is a good place to start with over 100 local artists represented in its downtown gallery. Stop by to browse the artwork, which is all for sale.

Shop at the Downtown Boutiques

One of the best things to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea is to go shopping in the charming downtown area. 

Most of the shops, cafes, and restaurants are located along Ocean Avenue, which stretches from Highway 1 all the way down to the Pacific Ocean.

No chain stores are allowed on Ocean Avenue, so all the shops are locally-owned businesses. Check out the side streets too, as many of the trendy boutiques are located just off the main strip. 

For women’s clothes and accessories, stop in at Ms. Fabulous on San Carlos St., which is stocked full of colorful beach attire.

For chic homewares, head over to Carmel Plaza and browse Beachwood Home Carmel, located at Mission and Ocean.

Go on a Historic Walking Tour

Take a self-guided tour of the homes, inns, churches, and restaurants that make Carmel so special by grabbing a map from the downtown Welcome Center. 

At the turn of the century, artists and immigrants flocked to Carmel, many fleeing San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake that leveled the city. 

Attracted by the natural beauty, mild Mediterranean climate, and cheap land prices, Carmel was the perfect location for an artist community.

Architect Hugh Comstock developed a bohemian style to house these writers and artists in the 1920s, which is why Carmel-by-the-Sea has such distinctive buildings.

Relax at a Spa

Take a well-earned break at one of Carmel’s day spas. 

Spend the day at the Refuge , a new wellness center with a silence policy, thermal pools, and relaxing massages in a beautiful natural setting.

Bernardus Lodge is another popular spa, located in the beautiful Carmel Valley. Indulge in a signature Dozen Roses massage and follow up with a visit to the warming pool, dry sauna, and eucalyptus steam room.

At Carmel Valley Ranch , traditional herbal remedies are integrated into massage and facial treatments for a natural wellness boost at Spa Aiyana. Many of the herbs and flowers used in the spa are grown organically on the ranch.

Take a Trip to Monterey

For a fun day trip, drive ten minutes north on Highway 1 and discover all the interesting things to do in Monterey.

Catch a Show at the Theater

See comedy, a play, or a concert at Sunset Center , Carmel’s performing arts center. The 718-seat theater is ideal for intimate performances, and the beautiful gothic architecture adds to the atmosphere. 

Carmel-by-the-Sea has another theater: Forest Theater , an outdoor amphitheater framed by pines. 

In August and September, the theater company PacRep puts on an annual family musical. And every October, PacRep stages a Shakespeare Festival.

A visit to the theater is one of the best things to do in Carmel at night.

Visit the Vineyards of Carmel Valley

Head out of town to Carmel Valley’s vineyards, where you can sample delicious wines on the estate where they’re produced. 

There are over 20 wineries located along Carmel Valley Rd., many within a short stroll of one another. 

The cool ocean breezes and plentiful sunshine found in Carmel Valley creates the perfect climate for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals.

Try the whimsically-named Folktale Winery and Vineyard , where you can order a flight of wines and relax on the heated patio. 

Then, drop by Bernardus Winery , also on Carmel Valley Rd., to sample wines and a charcuterie board. Tours are also available, where you can learn about the winemaking process.

Spot Whales on a Wildlife Cruise

The Monterey Bay is ideal for whale watching because migrating seasons overlap, so you can spot these amazing creatures throughout the year. 

Hop on a boat leaving from Monterey for a three-hour whale-watching cruise, where you may encounter grey whales, blue whales, orcas, seals, sea otters, dolphins, and sea lions.

Meet at Fisherman’s Wharf for Discovery Whale Watch ’s naturalist-led tour, where you’ll board your boat. 

Wear warm layers as it can get cold on the water and be sure to bring your camera. A whale watching tour is easily one of the most popular things to do in Monterey and Carmel.

Go Horseback Riding at Pebble Beach

With 27 miles of equestrian trails, riding through the Del Monte Forest at Pebble Beach on horseback is a unique experience. 

Book a guided trail ride at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center for a relaxing and fun outdoor experience.

You can bring your own horse or ride one of the center’s rescue ponies. Trails go through forests, dunes, and along bluffs for some of the most spectacular views in Carmel.

Free Things to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Stroll on the beach.

After browsing the boutiques and cafes of downtown Carmel, keep walking down Ocean Avenue for a stroll along Carmel Beach. 

There’s a small parking lot with restrooms at the end of the road, but it fills up early. More parking is available on Scenic Road, which runs parallel to the beach.

Carmel Beach is beautiful and a stroll on the sand is one of the best activities in Carmel-by-the-Sea. 

With a wide stretch of soft, bright white sand, it’s perfect for walking, sunbathing, and making sandcastles. Carmel Beach is also very photogenic, with the unique cypress trees framing the sand.

The beach is dog-friendly too, with pets allowed off-leash provided they are under their owner’s control. 

The only downside is the strong surf and currents, which make Carmel Beach unsuited for swimming. On the plus side though, it’s great for surfing.

South of Carmel Beach is Carmel River State Beach, another beautiful stretch for a stroll. 

Like Carmel Beach, the strong undertow creates unsafe conditions for swimming but it’s ideal for walking and wildlife spotting. 

There’s a parking lot at the end of Carmelo Street with limited parking.

Enjoy a Scenic Hike

A hike in one of the many parks is one of the best things to do in Carmel. 

You’ll find some great hiking trails in Garland Ranch Regional Park , taking you from the willow-lined banks of the Carmel River into the oak savannas of the Santa Lucia Mountains.

Another area to explore is the Palo Corona Regional Park , with its rolling green hills and hardwood forests. 

Check out the great views from Inspiration Point or spot wildlife at Animas Pond, which is covered in bright red Azolla in the spring months.

For a flat, shady hike, head to Mission Trail Nature Reserve where five miles of trails meander through Monterey pine and live oak forests. 

On your way out, check out the Lester Rowntree Native Plant Garden to discover more about the plants in this area.

If you prefer to stick to the coast, take the Scenic Road, which has a path connecting Carmel Beach to Carmel River State Beach. Or head over to Point Lobos State Park, which has miles of beautiful oceanside trails.

Find Your Favorite Fairytale Cottage

Take a guided tour of the Comstock cottages of Carmel , and find out more about these artistic residences. 

These straight-out-of-a-storybook homes are a big part of what makes Carmel-by-the-Sea such a special place, so it’s worth spending some time seeking out the most fabulous examples.

Many of them are listed on the self-guided historical walking tour, but you’ll get more information on the quirky cottages by going with a local guide.

I love the origin story of these cottages. The architect, Hugh Comstock, lovingly built his wife a fairytale home just for her prized doll collection. 

It was immediately a hit in the village and Hugh was soon building more homes in the same style throughout the community. You can still see the original dollhouse.

Note that all residences in Carmel can be tricky to find since the city shuns anything as mundane as a postal address.

Instead, homes have names and homeowners strive to add a distinguishing feature like a colorful fence in order to direct out-of-towners to their front door.

Check Out the Frank Lloyd Wright House

If cute architecture isn’t your style, seek out the Frank Lloyd Wright House that stands solid against the tide at the far southern end of Carmel Beach. 

The stone-clad building resembles the prow of a ship and like other Frank Lloyd Wright homes, blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.

The house is still owned by the family of Mrs. Clinton Walker, who originally commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright in 1948. 

It’s best viewed from the beach, but once a year, the owners open up the house to the public.

Cruise Down Scenic Road

Scenic Road runs along Carmel Beach and is a beautiful drive or walk. 

If you walk, there’s a 3.5-mile pathway running by the road that overlooks the beach and ocean. The path starts from Carmel Beach and ends at Carmel River State Beach.

Several sets of stairs are located along the path, so you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to find your way back to the sand. 

It’s a good way to see more of Carmel’s stunning homes, many of which are located near the ocean. 

If Carmel is a romantic getaway trip for you, this is also a great spot for a beautiful sunset stroll before heading back to town for dinner.

Go on an Art Walk

Tour 14 artist-owned galleries in Carmel’s downtown on an art walk , held on the second Saturday of the month from 4-7 pm. 

Simply follow the blue lanterns to discover the art and artists of Carmel at this free event.

Artists often hold demonstrations and new work receptions, so there’s always something new to see. 

Many of the galleries also offer refreshments. This is a great way to not only view some inspiring art but also to get to know the artists themselves.

Drive to Big Sur

Carmel is the gateway to Big Sur, the sparsely populated region along the Central Coast that’s famous for its spectacular natural beauty.

Cruise along the winding Highway 1 with steep, wildflower-dotted cliffs on one side and crashing ocean on the other. 

Along the way, stop in for a memorable lunch at Nepenthe, grab a delicious pastry at Big Sur Bakery, and go for a hike at Garrapata State Park.

You could do this as a day trip or just spend a few hours in the afternoon exploring the coastline. 

My favorite stops in Big Sur include Bixby Bridge, Pfeiffer Beach, and Julia Pfeiffer State Park, where you can see a waterfall over the ocean by the name of McWay Falls.

Big Sur is also home to the Esalen Institute, an education center focusing on wellness and alternative therapies. 

You can take a massage, meditation, or yoga course, go for a hike , or just enjoy a massage by the ocean as a day visitor.

Dine at One of Clint Eastwood’s Restaurants

Head over to Mission Ranch Hotel , Clint Eastwood’s restaurant and inn, for a romantic sunset meal overlooking the ocean.

Hollywood star Clint Eastwood has a long connection with Carmel, starting with his army days at nearby Fort Ord in 1951. 

At the height of his career, he moved to the city and filmed his directorial debut, Play Misty for Me, in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Unlike most stars who escape Hollywood for a quiet life away from the paparazzi, Clint Eastwood took a big role in Carmel. 

He was mayor of the town from 1986 to 1988 and has bought several restaurants, including Hogs Breath Inn, Mission Ranch, and Pebble Beach Resorts.

Although Clint sold Hogs Breath Inn to a friend, it’s safe to say it’s still run in a way he would approve of, and the restaurant remains a locals’ favorite.

Downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea is full of hidden passageways, courtyards, and gardens waiting to be found. 

The best way to find them is to simply wander around and make your own discoveries but here are a few of my favorites.

• Pilgrim’s Way Community Bookstore and Secret Garden : This hidden gem, located in a tiny shortcut between Dolores and San Carlos St., resembles a zen garden.
• Der Ling Lane and Passageway : Step away from the crowds of Ocean Avenue into this shady, ivy-covered alleyway. You’ll find several jewelers and an art gallery to explore too.
• Court of the Golden Bough : Find storybook cottages and authentic Italian food in this tucked-away courtyard.
• Tuck Box Courtyard : A cute courtyard at the back of a Comstock cottage on Dolores St., which operates as a traditional tea room.

Cozy up by the Fire at The Forge in the Forest

Drink for a Dime

Step back in time for a happy hour with a twist: drinks are just 10 cents at Bud’s , the retro-chic hotel bar at La Playa Carmel.

There are a few rules to this happiest of happy hours. You must have a dime for each basic cocktail you order. “Dime time” starts when the bartender rings the bell and ends exactly ten minutes later. 

The happy “hour” takes place once a day, at the discretion of the bartender. So be extra nice to your bartender if you want to take part in this cherished local tradition.

Tour the Robinson Jeffers Tor House

The Tor House is the stone-built cottage of American poet Robinson Jeffers, who was inspired by Carmel’s natural beauty to write his poetry. You can tour the home and its gardens on Saturdays.

The home is accompanied by a tower, which was built by the poet as a quiet place for his wife. Both structures are made from granite, hauled up from the beach below. 

If you’re interested in photography, literature, or architecture, you’ll enjoy a trip to this spot. It’s one of the most unique Carmel-by-the-Sea attractions.

Visit Whalers Cabin Museum

China Cove was once a Chinese fishing village and this fascinating story is told at the Whaler’s Cabin Museum in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. 

The village was founded by a group of Chinese fishermen who were shipwrecked and decided to stay, building cabins from the pine trees.

Located on the bluff above Whalers Cove, the museum is open 9 am to 5 pm daily. It has several exhibitions detailing the lives of the immigrants who laid the foundations for Monterey’s commercial fishing empire.

Spot Butterflies at Palo Corona Regional Park

The endangered Smith’s blue butterfly thrives among the delicate pink buckwheat flowers in Palo Corona Regional Park . 

Take a hike through the park in July, the brief window when the butterflies hatch, feed, and reproduce for your best chance of an encounter.

Western monarch butterflies also enjoy the wildflowers of Palo Corona, so keep an eye out for these beautiful orange insects. 

In the skies above, condors and golden eagles often circle, looking for prey.

Visit Carmel River Bird Sanctuary

Head to Carmel River State Beach to see the Carmel River Bird Sanctuary , located in the lagoon where the river meets the sea.

Californian brown pelicans, terns, sandpipers, and curlews often hang out in this spot. 

In the winter, the threatened snowy plover likes to make an appearance. If you follow the river upstream, you can also listen for woodpeckers.

This beach is a lovely spot to throw down a blanket, tuck into a picnic, and appreciate the wildlife. 

Fall and winter are the best seasons to go bird watching in Carmel, but there are plenty of birds to spot throughout the year as well.

Rent a Classic Car

The 17-Mile Drive, Big Sur, Cannery Row… Carmel and Monterey County are full of amazing scenic roads perfect for a classic California road trip . 

So, why not do it in style with a classic car? Monterey Touring Vehicles has a fleet of cool cars to rent for half or full days.

From classic convertibles to retro VW vans – and even a DeLorean – you can live out your automobile dreams for a day.

Camping Near Carmel-by-the-Sea

Although there aren’t many campsites in Carmel-by-the-Sea, there is Carmel by the River RV Park for RVers and van campers . 

Over in Monterey, you can tent camp at Veteran’s Memorial Park , a mile uphill from Fisherman’s Wharf. Camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Further south on Highway 1 is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park , which has a large campground accommodating both RVers and tent campers . Many of the sites here are along the river. 

As with most California state park campgrounds, you’ll want to book early to secure a spot.

Best Time to Visit Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel’s climate, like most of California’s Central Coast, can catch you off guard. I’ve visited often and been freezing in June then found myself sunbathing on the beach in December. 

The most consistent sunshine and warm temperatures are found in September and October, which is also when you’re less likely to battle crowds of tourists. Because of this, it’s my favorite time of year to visit Carmel.

On the other hand, the wildflowers along this stretch of coast are spectacular in spring, so April is another good time if you don’t mind chilly mornings. 

During the winter, the road south of Carmel going into Big Sur is often closed due to colossal floods that wash away whole sections of the road. 

So, you’ll want to make sure to check road conditions before driving this route.

Late summer and fall are fire season in California , and the forested areas around Carmel are vulnerable to devastating wildfires.

Keep a close eye on local news for fire alerts (Twitter is great for this) and avoid any areas with fires, even if you’re not in their direct path. Sadly, small wildfires can grow to a dangerous size very quickly.

Tips for Visiting Carmel-by-the-Sea

• Bring light layers like a fleece or rain jacket for when the weather turns cool. The fog can creep in any time of the year, making things chilly.
• Carmel is very walkable but a car is necessary to visit surrounding areas, like Big Sur or the vineyards.
• Although tempting, do not go swimming at Carmel’s beaches. The undertow is strong and there are no lifeguards.

• Warm layers for the evening – like a sweater and jacket  
• Sun hat or beanie , depending on the season

It’s not hard to see evidence of the city’s free-thinking roots. Current residents still fight hard to preserve  Carmel’s historic charm and architecture. You won’t find any fast-food restaurants, street addresses, parking meters, or street lights in this California city!

The Top 15 Things to Do in Carmel-by-the-Sea

1. step back in time at the carmel mission.

It’s no secret that the Carmel Mission is one of the top Carmel-by-the-Sea attractions. Also known as the Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Río Carmelo, this beautiful Spanish mission was built in 1797 and is now a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Founded in 1770 by Father Junipero Serra of Spain, this is the second of California’s famous missions. The Carmel Mission has been meticulously and authentically renovated throughout the years and is the only Spanish mission in California with its original bell tower and bell.

Step inside, and you’ll immediately be impressed by the beautiful basilica, intricate decorations, and Spanish Colonial liturgical art. After that, you can explore the grounds to find four museum galleries, a chapel, gardens, and a fountain.

The Carmel Mission is still an active church and is free to enter during opening hours. If you want to take one of the interesting docent-led tours, check the website for times.

2. Take a Hike in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Located on the Pacific Ocean, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Plus, it’s located less than 10 minutes from the heart of Carmel, so it’s easy to reach if you feel like getting outside. Explore the Natural Reserve, and you’ll come across stunning ocean-side bluffs, beautiful tide pools, flower-studded fields, and a range of scenic oceanfront trails. 

Bird Island Trail is arguably the best and most popular trail in Point Lobos. This 0.8-mile loop trail will lead you to attractions like picture-perfect China Cove, Gibson Beach, and Pelican Point. Plus, you can do some serious birdwatching at the Bird Island overlook.

For something a bit more challenging, the North Shore Trail is a moderate 2-mile out-and-back trail that will take you to Point Lobos’ famous Old Veteran Cypress tree, Bluefish Cove, Bog Dome Cove, Whaler’s Cove, and groves of wildflowers (depending on the season).

If you’ve got the time, be sure to check out the marine mammals. As the name implies, Sea Lion Point Trail is the perfect pick if you want to marvel at the sea lions basking in the sun. Alternately, Cypress Grove Trail will lead you to Headland Cove, where you can spot sea otters frolicking in the water!

3. Take in Spectacular Ocean Views on 17-Mile Drive

Taking a drive on the iconic 17-Mile Drive should be at the top of any Carmel-by-the-Sea bucket list. This is one of the most beautiful drives in California, so try not to be the person doing the driving!

This 16.78-mile stretch of pavement is actually on private land, so you’ll have to pay $11.25 per vehicle to enter. You can start the journey in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Be sure to allot a significant amount of time to completing the route because there’s a lot to see on this scenic drive! 

Along the way, you’ll glimpse stunning ocean views, lavish mansions, ancient cypress trees, and world-famous golf courses, including Pebble Beach Golf Links . Be sure to stop off at as many viewpoints as possible to take in the ocean views and spot sea lions, flocks of birds, and maybe even whales and dolphins.

If you’ve got the time, you can soak up the sun from the incredible Spanish Bay Beach, take in the rugged beauty at The Restless Sea and Point Joe, watch wildlife at Bird Rock and Seal Rock, and photograph the iconic Lone Cypress in Pebble Beach.  

4. Check Out the Whimsical Fairytale Cottages

One of the best Carmel-by-the-Sea activities is to take a self-guided tour of the city’s famous fairytale cottages. In 1924, Carmel resident Hugh Comstock had the brilliant idea of building a fairytale cottage to house his wife’s successful Otsy-Totsy doll-making business. 

But the obsession didn’t stop there. Comstock went on to build 30 fairytale homes during his life, influencing the charming architecture of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Fast-forward to today, and you can still see 21 of Comstock’s signature “storybook” creations, all inspired by British children’s book illustrator Arthur Rackham.

You’ll want to start your sightseeing tour at the Carmel Visitor Center on Ocean Avenue, where you can pick up a handy map of the locations of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s famous fairytale cottages. Start off at the original 1924 Hansel cottage and the famous 1925 Gretel cottage, which is located right next door.

While most of the cottages are private residences, some have been repurposed as businesses, including The Tuck Box and The Forge in the Forest Restaurant . If you’re looking for unique things to do in Carmel, enjoy a meal at one of these places!

Luckily, you don’t have to go far to find a beautiful stretch of sand. Located at the base of Ocean Avenue, Carmel Beach is a 1-mile, crescent-shaped beach that offers endless activities no matter when you’re visiting.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is an extremely dog-friendly city, so it’s no surprise that the city allows dogs to be off-leash here. This is the ideal spot to watch your pups roam free or lay down a towel and take in the Pacific Ocean views. If beautiful sunsets are your thing, you’re going to love seeing the show from Carmel Beach.

Carmel Beach is also a great surf spot that’s perfect for novices and experts alike. Surfers can also catch waves in the crystal clear waters off of nearby Point Lobos and Pebble Beach.

For something a bit more removed from the hustle and bustle of Carmel Beach, Carmel River State Beach is located 1.5 miles from downtown Carmel. This is also a popular spot to do some birdwatching. If you keep an eye out, you may glimpse marbled godwits, tiny sanderlings, brown pelicans, and black oystercatchers!

8. Take the Carmel-by-the-Sea Wine Walk

Oenophiles will be pleased to know that Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel Valley are brimming with award-winning local wineries and wine tasting rooms. You’ll find dozens of tasting rooms in the city’s one-square-mile downtown, which means going wine tasting could not be more convenient!

Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the best public courses in the US and is famous for its dramatic seaside setting. The 18-hole golf course has been the site of six US Open Championships, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and a whole slew of other prestigious sporting events. Time your visit right, and you may have the chance to see the likes of Tiger Woods teeing off from the iconic 18 th Hole!

If golf isn’t really your thing, you can spend the day in Pebble Beach getting pampered at The Spa at Pebble Beach , taking scenic horseback rides at The Pebble Beach Equestrian Center , or taking in the ocean views from an oceanfront walking trail. No matter how you spend your time in beautiful Pebble Beach, sipping a sunset cocktail at the Inn at Spanish Bay is the perfect way to end the day.

10. Spot Orcas & Humpback Whales

Depending on the time of year, the waters off of Carmel are teeming with whales and other incredible sea creatures. The best way to get up close and personal with the area’s marine life is to go on a whale watching tour. Most tours depart from Monterey, which is just a 10-minute drive away.  

Monterey Bay Whale Watch offers a 3- to 4-hour tour where you’ll have the chance to spot blue, gray, humpback, fin, minke, and orca whales. Plus, you might even see multiple species of dolphins, porpoises, and birds. 

For the best chance to spot gray whales, dolphins, and orcas it’s best to visit from January to March. Visit from April through December, and you’ll have a better chance of seeing humpback whales, blue whales, and orcas.

You don’t have to go on a whale watching tour to glimpse these majestic sea creatures frolicking in the Pacific. Orcas pass by Pinnacle Point in Point Lobos State Reserve year-round. And if you’re visiting from December to April, there’s a good chance you’ll see gray whales migrating past the point.

11. Eat Your Way Through Carmel’s Best Restaurants

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a city for foodies, and you’d be remiss not to spend your time sampling as many of the city’s best restaurants as possible. From Michelin-starred eateries to hip cafes, there’s something to suit all tastes here.

For upscale American comfort food with pasture views, it’s impossible to go wrong with the Clint Eastwood-owned Mission Ranch Restaurant . This is the only place in town where you can gaze out at flocks of sheep while dining on a buttermilk fried Jidori chicken sandwich or a ranch Cobb salad.

Then there are the local wines and charcuterie and cheese boards at Folktale Winery , the West Coast Oysters and porterhouse steaks at Seventh & Dolores (aka 7D), and the multi-course gourmet meals at Michelin-starred Aubergine .

For casual meals, Pescadero serves up excellent Northern Baja fare, and Village Corner slings out some seriously good burgers. Sports fans will want to nosh on pub grub while watching the big game at Brophy’s Tavern , or if you’re looking for a diner-style breakfast, look no further than Katy’s Place . 

The Stationaery is one of the coolest restaurants in town and is popular for its creative, locally sourced dishes. Think decadent Maine lobster rolls, chorizo and crema chilaquiles, and smoked trout potato pancakes.

12. Check Out Frank Lloyd Wright’s ‘Cabin on the Rocks’

Architecture buffs will definitely want to check out Frank Lloyd Wright’s Mrs. Clinton Walker House . Dubbed the “Cabin on the Rocks,” you’ll find the home perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean in Carmel Point. 

The home was designed in 1948 for Mrs. Clinton Della Walker of Pebble Beach, who asked the famous architect to build a home “as durable as the rocks and as transparent as the waves.” The ship-shaped home was completed in 1951 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. 

Its unique shape and use of local and natural materials makes Cabin on the Rocks a prime example of Wright’s signature organic architectural style, which blends homes with their natural surroundings. While this is a privately-owned property, it’s possible to tour the home on one day each June during Carmel’s annual House & Garden Tour .

13. Go Art Gallery Hopping

Carmel has been a mecca for artists since the early 1900s. Due to its deeply-rooted artistic spirit, you’ll find over 100 galleries scattered around this one-square-mile town! 

Even if you don’t consider yourself to be an art aficionado or collector, you’ll love perusing the village’s galleries. You can start by popping into the prestigious Classic Art Gallery and checking out their collectible paintings and sculptures by renowned European and American artists.

For more fine art, you’ll find contemporary and modern sculptures, drawings, prints, and more at Dawson Cole Fine Art Gallery . Expect works from the likes of Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, Chuck Close, and Wayne Thiebaud, to name a few. 

Gallery Sur features photography from Carmel, Big Sur, and Monterey, as well as a range of Zimbabwean sculptures. Or, for a glimpse of works from some of Northern California’s best artists, Nancy Dodds Gallery is your best bet!

14. Explore Carmel’s Hidden Passageways & Courtyards

Getting lost in Carmel is easily one of the coolest things to do. Meander down one of the village’s cobblestone passageways, and you never know what you’re going to stumble across!

Photographers will definitely want to grab their camera and head straight for Der Ling Lane, the most photographed alleyway in Carmel. Set right off of Ocean Avenue and Lincoln, this is also where you’ll find the Galante Vineyards tasting room.

The bamboo-lined Secret Garden Passageway is located between Dolores Street and San Carlos Street. Not only is it picture-perfect, but it will take you to the Pilgrim’s Way hidden bookshop and The Secret Garden gift shop. 

For a bit of romance, Court of the Fountains boasts a beautiful blue fountain, ivy-clad brick walls, and a gourmet chocolate shop. This is also the location of Anton & Michel Restaurant , which is the perfect spot for a special meal.

There are tons of hidden gems in Carmel-by-the-Sea, so it’s well worth just wandering around and seeing what you can find.

15. Get Artsy at the Carmel Art Festival

Carmel-by-the-Sea hosts a bunch of fun festivals each year, but the Carmel Arts Festival is easily the best of the bunch! The three-day event usually takes place in May at Devendorf Park, which is right in the heart of town. Not only is this the perfect family-friendly event but it’s totally free!

You’ll have the chance to check out works from 60 juried local artists. Throughout the 72-hour festival, there are also silent auctions, a Kids Make Art day, Sculpture-In-The-Park, and tons of live music. Plus, this is Carmel, so expect all sorts of excellent locally sourced goodies to fill up on.

Explore the town, and you’ll find that a bunch of art galleries also participate in the festivities. Pop into these galleries, and you’ll meet local artists while sipping Carmel Valley wine and snacking on cheese!

My family and I enjoyed an afternoon with Bonnie from Carmel Food Tours. We had a private tour where we enjoyed fare from quite a few dining venues, the Nut Hut, and Lula's Chocolates. At each venue we were allowed time to enjoy their specialties and even had the chance to meet with the owners of the venues. We were able to learn about the locals, the city, all while feeling welcomed at the same time. We loved it so much and look forward to doing it again. Bonnie went above and beyond. Her bubbly friendly personality made it perfect.

We have visited the Monterey/Carmel area several times and never realized there was a food tour in Carmel By The Sea! Don’t miss this fantastic tour. We learned about the history and hidden gems here. The 6 stops ( yes 6) were at some amazing restaurants and a few libations too! You will not want to make dinner plans because you will be pleasantly full after the 3 hour tour! The walking was very easy and paced well, definitely wear walking shoes as the Carmel walkways are a bit bumpy. Veronica was our tour guide for the day. She was exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly! We look forward to enjoying this tour again next time we are in the area!,

Somewhere amidst my third visit, I smiled. I knew this place was special and certainly pulled at my heart but this time it was different. When I set out to write this guide to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, it didn’t take long to figure out why.

Words like charm, scenic, and serene capture Carmel, California for me. It’s a retreat, somewhere to sojourn for a few days of reconnecting with yourself and with nature. I’ve spent more time here than any other destination in California outside of where I live.

Amidst a walk in Point Lobos Reserve , I stopped. Right in front of me, a sea otter turned on its back and cleaned its paws. Further on the horizon, pelicans swung in and dived into the ocean. And in the distance, whales spouted up water as if they knew it was their turn to complete the scene.

This was Carmel-by-Sea and its surrounding area — a charming, fairytale town set in nature, so untouched that maybe you’d feel worlds away from home. If you’re planning any time on the California coast, may I suggest two nights here.

How to Get to Carmel, California

From San Francisco or the Bay Area

To get to Carmel-by-the-Sea from San Francisco, drive south on Highway 1 for approximately 120 miles, enjoying breathtaking coastal views along the way. I would recommend leaving before or after the rush hour which takes approximately two and a half hours or so.

Flying to Carmel-by-the-Sea

The three major airports in order of proximity are Monterey County Airport, San Jose International, and San Francisco International Airport. If you plan on exploring the area, a car is needed to get around. It’s an easy area to drive, and the coastline is beautiful for a road trip. I use Discover Cars to book my rental cars in California.

Hotels in Carmel by the Sea (Where to Stay)

There are some incredible places to stay in the heart of Carmel. I have a few personal favorites, like Hotel Carmel, which I’ve stayed at a few times now, and some others bookmarked on my list.

Hotel Carmel

Hotel Carmel is, time and time again, an award-winning hotel and one of the best choices in Carmel. Its location is great, you’re footsteps to everything in town. The rooms are clean and modern and have a bohemian design to them. It’s such a win, and I love the fire pits to use at night. Book the best rates here .

One of the newer hotels to open, Villa Mara is an adults-only property that is one of the closest hotels to the ocean. It’s romantic, chic, and very intimate, with only 16 rooms. It’s a hard reservation to get, but if you do, I think Villa Mara is the epitome of elevated boutique design. Book the best rates here .

Le Petit Pali — Ocean Ave and 8th Ave

Le Petit Pali Hotel group came in this last year and took over two existing hotels, giving them an entire refresh. It’s two different locations — Ocean Ave and 8th Ave , but just minutes from each other. The rooms are chic and have that “cottage-core” style to them as well. La Playa Hotel

A Carmel classic, you can’t go wrong at La Playa Hotel . It’s a sister property to Hotel Carmel and is one of the largest properties in town — has an almost resort feel to it—large grassy spaces, many room categories, and quite close to the beach. Book the best rates here .

Carmel Valley Ranch

If you’re looking for the best resort-style stay with many things to do, consider staying in the valley at Carmel Valley Ranch . It’s a wonderful property with so much going on for the whole family. Where to Eat in Carmel, California – The Best Restaurants

There are many good eats throughout downtown Carmel and even down the coast. You can take your pick of the style of cuisine. Brophy’s Tavern

When it comes to a lively scene and great food, Brophy’s Tavern is one of Carmel’s iconic restaurants. The food is well done, like their fish & chips and Cobb Salad. It’s one of the more casual spots to eat in town, and almost always you can walk in and get a seat.

Cultura Comida y Bebida

For elevated cuisine with Oaxacan flare, Cultura serves everything from a Mezcal tasting to lovely house-made salsas. One dish to not pass on is their grilled squash and Oaxacan Farm cheese in a tortilla — the best modern version of a quesadilla.

When it comes to the best restaurant right now in Carmel-by-the-Sea, it’s Chez Noir . It is an elevated European bistro that meets local California cuisine. The interior space is chic, the food is incredible, and you’ll want to reserve far in advance for a seat here.

La Bicyclette

Timeless and classic, La Bicyclette is French Cuisine and well-executed pizzas in one space. It’s one of the Carmel restaurants I never miss. It’s a total classic and a great choice for a night out.

Stationaery

Stationaery opened a few years ago, and I love this bright and minimalist space that serves craft coffee and cozy brunch dishes for breakfast and lunch. I will eat anything on this menu and I find that it’s well worth the wait for an elevated meal.

Cantinetta Luca

Don’t skip this restaurant, Cantinetta Luca is my “secret” spot that many overlook. It’s great for wood-fired pizzas done well. It’s a total gem in Carmel, I’ve been coming here for almost 15 years.

Things to Do in Carmel, California

Hike in point lobos state natural reserve.

If you’re looking to get outside, head to the scenic Point Lobos State Natural Reserve for a beautiful walk along the coast. You’ll be able to spot wildlife here like seals, sea otters, and even whales. The parking can be limited, so keep this in mind — the earlier start, the better. Explore Endless Art Galleries and Shop Local in Carmel Downtown

In Carmel-by-the-Sea town, there are so many galleries to explore. Off Ocean Ave, you can work your way, popping in and out of boutiques. I find that just going for a stroll is the best thing to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea. While you are out exploring, I would take some time to pop into local boutiques like Bee, Bark, and Moss for some locally created goods.

Take a Scenic Drive Down 17 Mile Drive

Considered one of the most beautiful drives, you can come here and drive through viewpoints like Pebble Beach. 17 Mile Drive is an icon of California’s coast. If you haven’t done it yet, I think it’s worth doing at least once. Some of the best stops include the Cypress Point Lookout , Crocker Cypress Grove , and Ford Meadow .

Visit Carmel River State Beach or Carmel Beach

Tucked away from the main beach, I love to come to Carmel River Beach for a quieter beach to explore. It’s also an awesome spot for photos if you’re looking for a sunset place. Carmel Beach is also lovely as well for a good stroll.

Wine Tasting at Folktale Winery

In the heart of Carmel Valley , Folktale Winery is a beautiful destination for wine tasting. I would recommend coming for their lunch as well and booking a tour to visit the grounds. There is a lot to do in the Carmel Valley, so do consider spending an afternoon here.

To get an idea of California’s history, the picturesque Carmel Mission is well worth a visit. The Carmel Mission, also known as Mission San Carlos Borromeo del río Carmelo, is a historic Spanish mission located just outside of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s downtown. Founded in 1770 by Father Junípero Serra, it is renowned for its picturesque architecture and serene gardens.

Drive Down to Bixby Bridge and Explore Big Sur

If you’re up for a road trip, make your way south through Pacific Grove, down to Bixby Bridge for an iconic view. From there, you can continue to explore all that Big Sur has to offer. From local restaurants to black sand beaches and epic hiking trails, Big Sur is a wonderful day trip from Carmel.

Spend an afternoon in Monterey

Another nearby city is Monterey which is bubbly and perfect for the family. There are so many things to do in Monterey , from the famous aquarium to scenic walks on the coast. Carmel by the Sea is a playground for the rich and famous. This coastal town has been attracting celebrities and artists for decades making its one of the most exclusive communities in the United States. In fact, Clint Eastwood was the mayor of this beautiful seaside town. It’s no wonder, Carmel California is a dream with charming cottages, stunning beaches, and a vibrant arts scene. This coastal gem has captivated the hearts of travelers for decades, and we have enjoyed this little slice of California heaven as well. While we may not be able to afford one of its mansions, we can visit and these are the best things to do in Carmel by the Sea to include on your Big Sur road trip.

Best Things to Do in Carmel by the Sea

This charming village is only one square mile but it packs a huge punch. With fairy tale cottages, art galleries, and gorgeous ocean views, Carmel, California truly does feel like a storybook. When taking a road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Carmel California should be at the top of your list.

There are so many things to do in Carmel by the Sea from exploring the town center to taking day trips to explore the Pacific Ocean coast there’s something here for everyone. So let’s take a journey to this picturesque paradise and explore all of the best things to do in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

1. Learn to Surf at Carmel Beach

When in California, how can you not give it a go? One of the best things we did in Carmel by the Sea was to take a surfing lesson at beautiful Carmel Beach. Carmel Surf Lessons offers courses, rentals, or just a fun day with an instructor to help you get on the board.

Become a true Californian and learn to surf on the sandy beach with easy waves. Your instructor will give you hands-on help to ride the waves and stand up on the board. We’ve tried surfing a few times around the world, and this was a great place for beginners.

2. Stroll Along Carmel Beach

If surfing isn’t your thing, no worries, Carmel Beach is located just steps from downtown Carmel and is a great place to hang out and enjoy the sun and sand. For a downtown beach, this is a large horseshoe beach with rocky outcrops and beautiful views of Pebble Beach and Point Lobos.

Carmel Beach is where we took our surfing lesson, but there were plenty of people simply taking a stroll with their dogs along this 1-mile dog-friendly crescent-shaped beach.

3. Carmel River State Beach

Another beach located just south of Carmel by the Sea is Carmel River State Beach. It is known for its long, sandy expanse and picturesque views of the Carmel River Lagoon. If you are a bird watcher, this is a good beach to head to.

Located at the Carmel River Lagoon and Wetlands Natural Preserve hikers may spy Great Blue Herons and brown pelicans among other gulls and terns flying over the lagoon. If you walk upstream you will come across the Carmel River Bird Sanctuary and may hear or see other birds like the Downy Woodpecker.

Swimming is not recommended at Carmel River State Beach due to strong currents, but visitors can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the beach and the surrounding landscapes.

4. Mission Ranch

One of the coolest places we visited in Carmel by the Sea was the Mission Ranch Hotel and Restaurant. Thanks to the efforts of Clint Eastwood, this historic property was preserved. This old dairy farm dates back to the 1850s. It might be out of reach to stay at, but you can dine at the Mission Ranch restaurant for dinner or head to it for Sunday brunch. And a hot tip is that the terrace of the Mission Ranch restaurant is another great spot to watch the sunset.

5. Carmel Mission Basilica Museum

When you are out at Mission Ranch, stop by the Carmel Mission. This historic Spanish Mission is one of the more popular attractions in Carmel by the Sea. A national historic landmark, the Carmel Mission played an important role in the early history of California and is a stunning example of Spanish colonial architecture, featuring a bell tower, arched windows and doorways, and a beautiful courtyard with a fountain.

Visitors can also explore the mission’s beautiful gardens, which include a rose garden, a vegetable garden, and a cemetery where many of the mission’s early leaders are buried.

The Basilica of San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission (Carmel Mission) was founded in 1770 and is considered the most authentically restored Franciscan mission. You can visit the Carmel Mission Museum to learn all about one of the most important historic sites in California.

6. 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach

One of the top things to do in Carmel by the Sea and Monterey is to drive the famous 17 Mile Drive. This stretch of road spans a gorgeous coast from Pacific Grove to Carmel and goes through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach Resort and Pacific Grove.

There are plenty of sights to see including world-class golf courses, plenty of beaches, and scenic views. Our favorite stop was definitely the Ghost Tree and don’t forget the famous Lone Cypress. Spend the entire day enjoying the views as you watch wildlife in their natural habitat at the likes of Bird Rock, Seal Rock and China Rock. Yep, there are a lot of rocks. 7. Pebble Beach

The Pebble Beach community is worth visiting just to see the mansions alone. The founder of Pebble Beach Samuel F.B. Morse made sure to preserve the area and its Monterey cypress Trees creating this exclusive community. The drive goes through 5300 acres including the Del Monte Forest.Many people pay $11.25 to enter the gates car, but if you ride a bicycle or walk along the 17-mile stretch, it’s free!

8. Pebble Beach Golf Courses

Carmel by the Sea attracts many avid golfers and no trip to Carmel would be complete without at least seeing one of its world-class golf courses. The Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the most prestigious golf courses in the world. It is often rated as one of the best golf courses in the United States.

Pebble Beach Golf Links is a public course that has hosted numerous professional golf tournaments, including the U.S. Open, and has been played by some of the greatest golfers in history. The course features stunning ocean views, rolling hills, and challenging holes that require precision and skill.

Another popular Pebble Beach golf course is The Links at Spanish Bay. It was the first Scottish Style golf course in America and was designed by five-time British Open champion Tom Watson. He noted that “Spanish Bay looked so much like Scotland, you could almost hear the bagpipe piping.” Ever since it has had pipers play at sunset while the last golfers finish up on the course.

Del Monte Golf Course, the oldest golf course in continuous operation in the western United States, is a classic course with a more traditional design.

9. Window Shopping on Ocean Avenue

Ocean Avenue is the main street of downtown Carmel by the Sea and is a great place to do some shopping or sip a coffee as you people-watch. The street leads from downtown to the beach and there are plenty of things to see along the way. You’ll pass historic hotels and cottages and hideaways.

Grab a coffee at the Carmel Valley Roasting company and enjoy the sunshine as you explore photo and art galleries featuring local art and artist, charming courtyards, and hidden paths. Be sure to stop in at Carmel Plaza located at Ocean Avenue and Mission Street where you’ll find boutique designers, tasting rooms and gourmet shops.

The Carmel Visitor Center is located on Ocean Avenue, so pop in to see what is on or pick up a map of the area. 10. Carmel Art Galleries

Carmel by the Sea has always been a haven for artists. Writer Jack London was one of the founders of the artist’s colony here in 1906 and Ansel Adams live in Carmel in 1961. There are more than 100 art galleries around Carmel you can spend a day perusing as you explore the town.

With rich patrons residing in Carmel, you will be sure to find some one-of-a-kind art. Gallery by the Sea showcases local artists depicting scenes from Carmel, Pebble Beach, and Big Sur. Dawson Cole Fine Art Gallery has sculptures and prints and Dennis Rae Fine Art Gallery has authorized reproductions of Dr. Seuss.

If you happen to be in Carmel in May, The Carmel Art Festival is a juried art festival that features works by more 120 artists working in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, and photography.

11. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Heading a little farther south is a popular stop outside of Carmel at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. This beautiful state park is one of the top attractions near Carmel by the Sea known for its natural beauty.

There are several hiking trails to take in the gorgeous cliff views. Don’t miss hiking on Bird Island Trail to take in views of the picturesque China Cove. This is the most popular trail that will take you out to Pelican Point, China Cove, and Gibson Beach.

Point Lobos State Reserve (Punta de los Lobos Marinos) was named for all the sea lions that hang out on the rocks by Spanish explorers. Translated to Point of the Sea Wolves, you’ll have a good chance of spying on some harbor seals.

Hiking at Point Lobos

The park is known for its scenic hiking trails. Here are some of the best hikes at Point Lobos State Park. Cypress Grove Trail is an easy 0.8-mile trail that takes you through a grove of cypress trees and along the rocky coastline, with views of Carmel Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The Bird Island Trail is a moderate 0.7-mile trail that takes you to a small rocky outrcope that’s home to a variety of seabirds, including pelicans, cormorants, and gulls. The Whalers Cove Trail is another easy 0.5-mile trail takes you to Whalers Cove, a sheltered cove that was once used by whalers. Today, it’s a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling.

If you are looking for a little more out of your hike, the South Shore Trail is a moderate 1.8-mile trail that takes you along the south shore of the park, with views of China Cove and Gibson Beach.

12. Day Trip to Big Sur

If you are looking for an epic day trip and scenic drive, take a cruise out to Big Sur along California Highway 1 hugging the Pacific coast. It is just a 38-mile stretch of road but it is one of the best ocean-view drives in the world. You’ll cross famous landmarks and photo ops like the Bixby Creek Bridge, the sea stacks of Garrapta State Park, and Point Lobos.

Make sure to rent a car (if you aren’t self-driving) to enjoy the beautiful ocean views. There are plenty of pull-offs so take your time and give yourself a day. Or you can stay over in Big Sur, here is a guide to The Best Campgrounds in Big Sur

13. Garrapata State Park

Located just 15 minutes from Carmel, Garrapata State Park is a beautiful stop offering and incredible scene of rock formations off the coast of the Pacific Ocean. One of the main attractions is its beautiful coastline, which features rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and secluded coves.

Visitors can hike along the Bluff Trail, which offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Big Sur coastline, or explore one of the park’s many beaches, such as Garrapata Beach or Soberanes Beach.

There are numerous trails to explore the park’s scenic canyons and forests. One popular trail is the Soberanes Canyon Trail, which takes hikers through a beautiful redwood forest and along a creek, with views of waterfalls and lush vegetation.

14. Monterey

Monterey is a destination unto itself and we’ve written about all the things you can do in Monterey here. But to give you a quick overview, Monterey is just a few minutes’ drive from Carmel and if you want to just pop over for day trips it’s easy to do.

You will definitely want to spend some time exploring the seaside of Carmel. Stop in at the Monterey Aquarium to view marine life that resides in the kelp forest, explore the restaurants, art galleries, and shops along Cannery Row, and explore 17 Mile Drive from Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach. 15. Kayak the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Most people will say to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium in nearby Monterey and this is one of the best aquariums in the world for conservation, but we say head out onto the bay to see the marine life for itself.

Seeing the coast from the water is one of the more unique experiences. But getting up close and personal with marine life such as the endangered sea otters, sea lions, and bird life of is what makes it so special.

The cute sea otters were once almost extinct, but thanks to the Monterey Bay Aquarium efforts, they helped to make sure these little guys thrives. Now they there are groups of them floating atop kelp forests relaxing in the bay.

16. Whaler’s Cabin Museum

Point Lobos has a long history and was at one time it was a whaling station and there was a coal mine in the area. Luckily, it was set aside as a protected area for the Monterey cypresses, but there is a museum in an old Whalers Cabin that is now a cultural history museum to learn all about the area’s history.

Located on the site of a former whaling station that operated from 1911 to 1926, the museum offers a glimpse into the area’s whaling past and its impact on local communities.

The museum features a collection of artifacts and exhibits that showcase the whaling industry, including harpoons, scrimshaw, and a restored blubber pot. Visitors can also learn about the history of the whaling station and the process of rendering whale oil.

17. Sunset at Carmel Waterfront Scenic Road Walkway

Scenic Road is a two-mile one-way stretch of road on the waterfront of Carmel. It has beautiful views of the ocean and you can drive it, but walking it is even better.

As you drive along Scenic Road, you’ll notice a walkway that leads from the bluffs of Carmel Beach. Take the stairs up here and relax on one of the park benches to enjoy the sunset view. If you are driving there is parking on Scenic Road and Ocean Avenue.

Best Places for Sunset in Carmel, Ca

Carmel has some of the most beautiful sunsets if you want to relax and take in the views over the ocean, here are a few suggestions for sunset in Carmel.

Carmel Beach is within walking distance from Ocean Avenue and the long sandy beach makes for the perfect easy spot to watch the sunset.

Point Lobos State Reserve is also a great spot to watch the sunset from one of the park’s many trails. Carmel River State Beach is the perfect place to set out a picnic and watch the sunset from its wide open expanse of sand and crashing waves.

Take a drive down the scenic 17-Mile Drive which offers stunning views of the coastline and several designated spots to pull over and enjoy the sunset. Our favorite is at the Ghost Tree or Lone Cypress.

Tor House and Hawk Tower is another option located on a rocky outcropping above Carmel Beach.

18. Wine Tours

If you are a wine lover, one of the best things to do in Carmel is to take a wine tour. You don’t even have to leave the village! Carmel has a dozen tasting rooms for wine tastings. Because we stayed in the village, we could enjoy the fine Californian wines from the Carmel Valley wine region that we picked up to take with us for evenings during our road trip through central California.

Take a stroll through the village in search of one of many secret passageways in Carmel to find your favorite Pinot Noir or California Zinfandel. My favorite white is a California Chardonnay and they have that too!

Another fine product produced in the Carmel Valley is olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar so be sure to pick some up as you are browsing the shops in the village.

19. Take a Tour of Tor House

One of the more unique things to do in Carmel is to take a tour of the home of California poet Robinson Jeffers. In 1914, Jeffers began building Tor House and Hawk Tower after falling in love with the Carmel- Big Sur coast .

His family resided there and it was here that he wrote many of his works. He then built Hawk Tower – a stone tower that he built himself as a retreat for his wife. You can tour Tor House which is open to preserve the legacy of Robinson Jeffers.

The house is named after the rocky outcroppings on the nearby coastline, which are known as “torrs.” The surrounding gardens were also designed by Jeffers and feature a variety of native plants and trees, as well as sculptures and other art pieces created by Jeffers himself.

Today, Tor House is open to the public for guided tours and is considered an important cultural and historical landmark in the Carmel-by-the-Sea community.

20. Garland Ranch Regional Park

If you are looking for more outdoor things to do in Carmel by the sea, Garland Ranch Regional Park is a popular outdoor recreational area located in Carmel Valley. the park is dog friendly, so you will see many locos out for a walk with their furry friend.

With 4, 000 acres of trails, Garland Ranch Regional Park is perfect for hiking. It is also home to an abundance of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions. Birders will love keeping an eye out for hawks, eagles, and owls.

One of the more unique things you can do here is to book a guided horseback tour of the park. Horseback riding is allowed on most of the trails. If you want to do some mountain biking in the Carmel Valley, it is allowed on the Cooper Ranch Loop trail.

About Carmel by The Sea, California

With its small village atmosphere and stunning scenery, Carmel California has attracted artists for decades. It first caught the eye of Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo when he spied its white-sand beaches.

The Spaniards sailed past it for a century before Father Junipero Serra founded the second California mission in 1771 which still stands today. At the turn of the 20th century, artists were drawn to the shores of Carmel to create an artist’s oasis and after the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, it really took hold as people made Carmel by the Sea their permanent residence.

Carmel California – Fun Facts

Old traditions still hold on a century later and to this day there are no street addresses outside of the downtown core of Carmel. No chain restaurants have set up shop in Carmel by the Sea opting for more boutique and fine dining restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, and family-owned businesses.

You also won’t see any parking meters or street lights in Carmel.

And just for fun, did you know it is illegal to wear high heels in Carmel? While it is not enforced, if you want to wear heels, you will need to get a permit to do so. (Free of charge at the town hall) This law was set up in the 1960s to ensure the forest and natural setting of Carmel stayed intact without anyone suing for tripping over the roots and trees are strewn throughout town.

Frank Lloyd Wright even built a cabin in Carmel CA. in 1949. The cabin is located on a secluded wooded property in the Carmel Highlands at Carmel Point, just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

It was built as a vacation home for a local resident and is considered an excellent example of Wright’s Usonian style. The cabin is privately owned and is not open to the public but it just goes to show how influential this part of California has been for artists over the years.

While Carmel touts Doris Day, Jack London, and Clint Eastwood as its famous residents, celebrities still own property in Pebble Beach with this exclusive community having real estate reach up to 15 million dollars.

Where to Stay in Carmel, California

There are plenty of hotels to choose from in Carmel by the Sea from the resorts at Pebble Beach to downtown Carmel hotels, there is no shortage of lodging.

We stayed at  The Hideaway  which had gorgeous rooms and was located just half a mile from the beach and a 3 minute walk from Ocean Avenue. It was centrally located in downtown Carmel so we could walk to restaurants at night making it a great base. Rooms start at over $200 USD per night, but it is worth it. Tr ipAdvisor  /  Booking.com

Another charming hotel in Carmel is Cypress Inn – This legendary hotel was owned by actress Doris Day and is billed the most pet-friendly hotel in the country. This luxury boutique hotel is located in the heart of downtown. Check prices on TripAdvisor / Booking.com

The Lodge at Pebble Beach – Pebble Beach is a community just minutes away from Carmel by the Sea. Stay at this exclusive resort with ocean front and ocean-view rooms in complete luxury. This historic hotel dates back to 1919 and is close to several places to see including Seal Rock Creek Beach and the Lone Cypress. Check availability on TripAdvisor

Vacation Rentals in Carmel

A great way to save money in Carmel is to stay in a vacation rental and share the price with other couples or families. This ocean front property sleeps 8 and is located at the beach. It is a 30 minute walk into the village or a 5 minute drive.

For two people a stay in this quiet cottage is a good affordable option. It is a little out from each attractions, but it is in the center of it all at less than 4 miles from Cannery Row, 1.2 miles from Carmel Beach, and 1.8 miles from 17 Mile Drive and the Delmonte Forest.

For something more central, check out this cozy one bedroom just a short walk to both the beach and close to downtown.

Where to Eat in Carmel, California

One of the best restaurants in Carmel is   La Belana Cucina Toscana . It takes you straight to the heart of Tuscany with a traditional setting, fresh local olive oil, local fine wines and chees . Sit outside on the heated patio and enjoy a fresh farm to table menu drizzled in olive oil and truffles.

Pescadero is one of the best restaurants in Carmel for Mexican cuisine with a Baja inspired menu.

If you are looking for pub food with a hipster vibe, Brophy’s Tavern is one of the most popular restaurants in Carmel.

For coffee lovers, another place to grab a specialty coffee is cafe Carmel. But don’t worry, there are plenty of coffee shops in Carmel by the Sea to get your caffeine fix. For a full list of restaurants visit the Carmel official website.

How to Get to Carmel by The Sea, California

The village of Carmel by the Sea is located on California’s central coast in Monterey County. It is approximately 120 miles (2 hours) south of the San Francisco Bay area and 350 miles (5 hours) north of Los Angeles. We suggest renting a car and you can compare car rental prices at RentalCars.com .

You can drive to Carmel-by-the-Sea from San Francisco or Los Angeles on the scenic California Highway 1. From San Francisco, take the 101 South to Monterey and then head south on Highway 1. From Los Angeles, take the 101 North to Salinas and then head west on Highway 68.

The nearest airports to Carmel-by-the-Sea are Monterey Regional Airport, located just 10 miles away, and San Jose International Airport, located about 75 miles away. From there, you can rent a car or take a shuttle service to Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Several bus companies operate services to Carmel-by-the-Sea, including Greyhound and Monterey-Salinas Transit. These buses stop at the Carmel-by-the-Sea bus station, located in the heart of town.

Carmel by the Sea is just 10 minutes from Monterey and it is easy to explore Carmel village by either making a base there, Pebble Beach, or Carmel by the Sea.

When to visit Carmel, California

Being located in Central California, there is really no bad time to visit Carmel by the Sea but summer is obviously the best time for beach weather as the temperatures are the warmest. But it is crowded.

We were in Carmel during late Spring and loved the weather. It was pleasant during the day with cool evenings.

Fall still has warm weather and is less crowded than summer.

Whale Watching in Monterey County

You’ll be able to spot whales year-round in the ocean waters of Carmel California.

• Humpback whales migrate from March – November
• Grey whales migrate from December-May
• Blue whales from May to October

Brief History of the Carmel Mission:

In 1985, Pope John Paul II declared Junípero Serra venerable, and in 1988 he was beatified in recognition of his heroic virtues. In September 1987, The Pope visited the Carmel Mission as part of his tour of the United States. Pope Francis canonized Saint Junípero Serra on September 23, 2015 at the National Shrine in Washington, D.C. Today, the Mission’s and its historic church is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the United States for visitors from all over the world.
