List of Champagne Tours in France featured photo

France seems to have it all—the renowned food, high-end couture, and breathtaking landscapes that entice visitors. But nestled amidst its scenic countryside is a region with a sparkling secret: Champagne.

With prestigious Maisons de Champagne such as Dom Pérignon and Ruinart and sprawling vineyards that stretch as far as your eyes can see, it’s a paradise for wine lovers. There is a lot to see and learn, so I definitely recommend a guided tour of the Champagne region especially if you’re visiting for the first time.

In this post, I’ve put together a list of champagne tours in France so you can plan your next champagne trip. This post covers some of the big champagne houses where it’s usually easier to schedule visits especially if you plan ahead. But we also cover first a few guided tours that will take you around to multiple champagne destinations without you needing to drive.

Guided Champagne Tours that Visit Multiple Wineries

If you want a guide that will take you around to multiple wineries on a small group tour, check out some of my top recommendations below.

Reims Afternoon Tour of Epernay Region & Family Growers

I am a big fan of smaller grower champagne producers, many of which are family owned. Many of these smaller producers aren’t set up to manage tastings in English, especially at the last minute. So if you aren’t set on visiting a particular champagne house, joining a tour with a group like this can drastically simplify your trip organization.

Champagne Day Trip from Paris with 6 Tastings + Reims Cathedral

One really convenient thing about Champagne unlike most other French wine regions is how close it is to Paris. If you don’t want to deal with navigating the train or a rental car on your own, you can join a tour group like this one and still get the chance to see and taste wine from multiple champagne houses.

Popular Champagne House Destinations for Winery Tours in Champagne France

Champagne Pommery in Reims

To start it off, visit Champagne Pommery in Reims. Visiting Champagne House is truly a unique place where you can explore the stunning and spectacular cellars. But beyond that, exploring the vicinity gives you a premium art exhibit experience. Think of being mesmerized by Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Things To Do:

Explore 18 kilometers of underground cellars. Gallo-Roman crayères are chalky pits interconnected with galleries. The crayères were carved more than 2,000 years ago. Walking into the cellars means learning the history behind the immense pits.

Visit the Villa Demoiselle. It’s a great way to appreciate Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles manifested in the Champagne House’s architecture, cabinetry, and decor. Visiting the Villa Demoiselle also allows you to discover different arts and crafts like stained glass windows as well as murals by French artisans.

Join a private Champagne tasting workshop. Pommery offers a Master Class that will teach you the secrets to making their Champagnes. You will experience the great cuvées of Maison Pommery with a sommelier: Pommery Apanage Brut, Pommery Grand Cru Royal Vintage, and Cuvée Louise Vintage.

Champagne Bollinger

champagne tours in france

Champagne Bollinger offers some of the best tours in Champagne France. What makes this Champagne House stand out is its magnificent façade in Aÿ. It is simply beautiful and comes with two staircases that serve as a division between the winery and the cellars.

But Bollinger is more than meets the eye. The Champagne House will give you unique experiences once you explore their cellars.

Wine tasting. Champagne Bollinger offers a unique wine-tasting experience featuring 5 different Champagnes. The friendly Champagne tour guides will walk you through Bollinger’s special and unique methods of wine-making.

Discover the cellars. When you go into the cellars, you’ll have to go through 6 kilometers of passageways but it’s worth it. In this section, there are 11 million bottles of Champagne being stored.

But what makes many visitors so fascinated about the cellars is that there are additional 750,000 magnums of reserve wine stored by the village of origin as well as vintage by vintage.

Fun fact: Those were wine bottles from 1830 that the Bollinger family had no idea were in the “hidden room” until 2010. An intern was tasked to clean up the cellars only to discover a stock of antique bottles concealed behind a wall of empty bottles.

Champagne Bollinger rarely opens their doors for visitation. You better book a month in advance, though. To check availability and rates, visit their website .

Champagne Le Gallais

Champagne Le Gallais

Champagne Le Gallais is a wine lover’s dream. Their La Terrasse Des Abbaye s (terrace) will give you a 180-degree view over the Champagne vineyards and the Château de Boursault and overlooks the Marne Valley. Most of the activities include Champagne tasting.

Their guided Champagne tours are perfect for workshops, team building, and even if you just want to explore around.

Indulge in wine tasting. You can enjoy three Champagnes while enjoying the panoramic view of the Marne Valley’s vineyard. This is a great way to really appreciate the lush in the Champagne region.

Have a look at the facilities. The guided tour will show you around the Champagne House’s facilities, including their modern pressing technique, tank room, and cellars. Included in the tour are three Champagne tastings.

Join a private masterclass. Do you want to be a Chef de Cave for a day? You can take part in their master class, which covers an introduction to winemaking as well as the secrets of their viticulture.

Plus, you can visit the Clos du Château de Boursault and taste the wine at various stages of production. This tour also gives you a tasting of three Champagnes.

Champagne Le Gallais’ master class reservation, however, is subject to validation. To check availability and rates, visit their website .

Billecart Salmon

Billecart Salmon

Located in the town of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Champagne Billecart-Salmon was born out of a wedded couple and has survived 7 generations that share the same passion for enology. One of the highlights of the family-owned Champagne House is its French-style garden and a 100-year-old horse chestnut tree.

From exploring the vineyards and cellars to tasting their finest wines, Billecart -Salmon is one of the best venues for Champagne tours in Champagne France.

Explore Clos Saint Hilaire. This is the cuvée de prestige and one of Billecart-Salmon’s most popular plots. Most of the grape varietals grown here are vinified to make their most exclusive cuvées.

Tour the estate. You can start by visiting their cellars and exploring their Champagnes which are fermented in oak barrels and steel tanks. In cellars, you’ll also get to see the Le Clos Saint-Hilaire being fermented in a center-stage position.

Explore the chalky tunnels. For many who have visited Billecart-Salmon, the most exciting part of the tour is the chalk tunnels. The tunnels were built in the 17th century, which adds a sense of history to the overall experience.

You might feel a somewhat somber ambiance as you walk through the tunnels since it is dimly lit and chilly. But it is exactly this unique atmosphere that makes it fascinating.

Wine tasting. You can’t end the tour without tasting Billecart-Salmon Champagne. The family has a summer house where you can taste their creations. You can start with lighter wines and build up to heavier wines that stay on the palate. During wine tasting, you’ll also get to learn about the different grape varieties they use.

That said, not everyone is lucky enough to book a tour with Billecart-Salmon. Champagne tours are available upon request and you may need to book it 6 months ahead, so good luck!

Best Day Tours in Champagne France

Canard-duchêne.

Canard-Duchêne

Canard-Duchêne lies in the heart of the Reims Mountain vineyard. Visiting the Champagne House and discovering their wines’ distinct characteristics are a great retreat if you opt for a Champagne day tour.

A true embodiment of oenotourism, one of the best things (at least, in my book) about paying a visit to the Champagne House of Canard-Duchêne is the full-life yoga classes offered. But there is so much more to enjoy beyond that.

Explore the estate by electric bike. This is a good way to appreciate nature and its blessings. Go on an adventure with an electric bike and love on the lush of Ludes. You’ll be able to witness the beauty of the first Cru village situated in the heart of the grapevines on the Reims Mountain hillsides.

Following the bike ride, you will get served with 2 flutes of Champagne. After that, a tour guide will walk you through the cellars to learn about their terroir and the iconic Pinot Noir grape variety. Included in the tour is also a guide on the secrets of crafting their cuvées.

Enjoy aperitif boards. If you’re going on a group tour, this would be perfect. The boars are ensembled with delicious, sweet, and salty delights that pair well with your bubbly of choice.

It’s sort of like a picnic, but with prized wines with friends under the canopy of trees of the Domaine while the sun and a light breeze kiss your face.

Recharge. Canard-Duchêne offers yoga classes that help you reconnect with nature. It’s done in their magnificent centenary park, in a beautiful panorama between vines and forests. After the calming moment, you can enjoy the taste of their BIO P181 cuvée.

Discover more. Like different flower species and how they relate to the floral notes or bouquets or aromas of wines. It’s a rare opportunity in winery exploration in the Champagne region but you will learn a lot. You’ll discover the different varieties of edible flowers.

Currently, the Champagne House of Canard-Duchên is offering these summer activities by slot. To check availability and reserve a Champagne day tour, visit their website .

Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot in France

When it comes to luxury wines, Veuve Clicquot is one of the first Champagnes that comes to mind. It should also be on top of your list of Champagne tours in France.

Visiting the family estate is a unique experience. The Champagne House offers different tours from learning about the different winemaking methods to visiting their Unesco World Heritage-listed cellars to having a gastronomic picnic, and more.

Visit Maison Veuve Clicquot’s historic cellars . This is a great way to learn about the Champagne House’s 250 years of history. Harness your creativity and visit the Les Crayères, which are Unesco World Heritage-listed cellars.

During this tour, you will also learn about the unique French know-how of making Veuve Cliquot’s Brut Yellow Label Champagne. The wine is made from a special blend of reserve wines and represents the solaire personality through its iconic yellow label.

Discover the art behind the blended Rosé Champagne. Just like the Brut Yellow Label Champagne, you can also learn about the unique savoir-faire behind Veuve Clicquot’s Rosé Champagne. This wine offers a burst of floral aromas that the most discerning wine enthusiasts love.

Included in the tour is a visit to Les Crayères and wine tasting. You can even request a charcuterie board to pair your wine.

Learn about the story of Madame Clicquot. Madame Clicquot was a 27-year-old woman who took over the House after her husband died in 1805 and went on to create the first vintage champagne in 1810. She also pioneered the riddling table and created Veuve Clicquot’s first blended Rosé Champagne.

(I’m not going to turn this into a spoiler alert, so just pay a visit if you can!)

On this tour, you can visit the Crayères and have a taste of their iconic Brut Yellow Label cuvée in Magnum and prestige cuvée La Grande Dame.

Take on a picnic at Parc du Manoir de Verzy. Seems like taking a picnic with an overlooking view only happens in movies sometimes. Well, the Maison Veuve Clicquot offers a picnic “rosé together” where you can savor a delicious gourmet meal and wine pairings on the lovely grounds of Parc du Manoir de Verzy.

La Maison Mumm

La Maison Mumm

The Champagne House of G.H. Mumm lies in the beautiful city of Reims. If you’re staying in a convenient location and want to take a day Champagne tour in France, G.H. Mumm is easily accessible. The House offers unforgettable experiences that make visitors keep coming back.

Spend time in the G.H. Mumm’s cellars. There is so much history and tradition to learn here. In the underground chalky caves, you will learn everything about the house’s winemaking techniques and centuries-old artifacts and history through their museum exhibit.

Visit the Champagne tasting room and enjoy your choice of cuvée. If you book the Grand Cru Experience, you can have two tastings of their RSRV cuvées.

Visit the Foujita Chapel. This chapel was built in the 1960s and designed by Tsuguharu Foujita, a painter from Japan. He was also the designer of Mumm’s iconic Brut Rosé cap. Because of this, René Lalou, who ran Maison G.H. Mumm at the time, rewarded him with a land plot near the house Foujita’s chapel.

The chapel visit includes a tasting of the reserve Rosé Foujita cuvée, which is exclusively offered in French or in Japanese.

Private Day Champagne Tour in France

Dom pérignon.

Dom Pérignon

A true pioneer in winemaking, Dom Pérignon, a Benedictine monk and cellar master, was the man behind the sparkling wines loved by Napoleon Bonaparte and Winston Churchill. In fact, he is credited as the inventor of the effervescent wine.

Maison Dom Pérignon is a spectacular house in the Hautvillers near Éperney. It is one of the most prestigious and well-celebrated Champagne houses in the Champagne region, so it is something you may want to include in your Champagne Day tour if you plan to visit France soon.

Get your first stop at the Abbey of Abbatiale. This is where Dom Pierre Pérignon is buried. Visiting his final resting place is a great way to pay tribute and learn about the man’s story and the brand’s rich history.

Take on a tour through Dom Pérignon’s cellars. You may explore Napoleon’s cellar, which is the cellar master’s dedicated locker. During this tour, you’ll discover more about the history of the creation of the Maison’s fine wines. You can learn about the aging process of the bottles, how vintages are made, and a lot more.

Visit the garden courtyard. Taking a stroll on their garden courtyards includes tasting some of their finest wines.

Visit the cave and cellars. What makes this tour amazing is that as you go down the historic cave and cellars, you’ll be greeted with gorgeous stained glasses. In the cellars, you’ll find thousands of dusty bottles, arranged in row after row of shelves.

You’ll also see a sign of dedication by Napoleon, who was a huge Dom Pérignon Champagne fan. And did you know that the cellar was used during World War I? That is one of the fascinating facts you can learn when you visit the cellars.

Maison Dom Pérignon is currently not open for public visits, but you can book a private tour with third-party sites.

Moët & Chandon

Moët & Chandon

Moët & Chandon is basically an empire that owns several luxury goods brands including Champagne Dom Pérignon. Nestled in Épernay, the Champagne House boasts a rich history that is worth learning about.

Besides their luxurious wines, there are several ways to explore this magnificent Maison. From walking through their cellars and terroirs to Champagne tastings, a private tour of the Maison Moët & Chandon is a great way to spend quality time in Champagne France.

Have a taste of their Moët Imperial and Moët Vintage Champagnes. Explore the cellars and taste Moët & Chandon’s signature wines. On this tour, you’ll discover how to make those champagnes. You should be able to tell the distinctions between the two wines.

Experience the imperial moment. This tour will walk you through the largest Champagne cellar guided by the Maison Ambassador. During the guided tour, you will learn about two facets of the Moët & Chandon style: white and rosé. This means you’ll also get to taste their Moët Imperial and Rosé Imperial champagnes.

Taste their “Grand Vintage” champagnes. Such Moët & Chandon’s wine classification represents one exceptional year. On this tour, you’ll be taken to a private tasting lounge and taste the Maison ”Grand Vintage” Champagnes blanc and rosé.

Discover the secrets of à la Volée disgorgement. Taking on this cellar tour is a great way to experience the Maison hospitality. You get to see cellarman’s spectacular exhibition of an ancestral champagne savoir-faire disgorgement, à la Volée.

You can also enjoy two vintage cuvées that have been aging in the cellar for 14 years. You will also be treated to a third Grand Vintage tasting.

Take a stroll through the vineyards. Drive through Champagne vineyards with breathtaking views. You can then visit the private area of Fort Chabrol to immerse yourself in the region’s biodiversity. Then, enjoy a glass of Grand Vintage, Grand Vintage Rosé. Driving through the champagne countryside (before drinking, not after!) is one of my favorite things to do because the vineyards are so beautiful.

Walk the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can take your own self-guided tour by spending a day exploring the Avenue de Champagne. On this street, multiple champagne houses are located close to each other and you can walk between them to do tastings. Just remember to check about scheduling the tastings in advance in case they are busy.

To check the rates and availability of their private tours, visit their website .

How Many Days Do You Need in Champagne France?

It depends on how many wineries you want to visit and the time you want to spend exploring the Champagne region. But you can plan 2 to 3 days for a wine-focused tour. This number of days should be enough to visit the picturesque vineyards and even visit other towns and get to know the locals.

What Is the Most Famous Champagne House?

Moët & Chandon is the most famous Champagne House in the world. It’s the co-owner of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton or LVMH, which sells luxury goods, and also the owner of Dom Perignon. Moët was founded in 1743 and one of its best-selling wines was Brut Imperial, which was introduced to the market in the 1980s.

Is the Champagne Region of France Worth Visiting?

Anyone that has visited the Champagne region would highly recommend exploring the vineyards and cellars. It’s a lush region and full of history, which makes it a wine lover’s dream. You can always take a side tour when you are in Paris.

What Is the Best Season To Visit Champagne?

Summer is the perfect time to explore this region. It’s the best time to stroll through the vineyards, however, it can be crowded during this season. If you want to avoid the crowd, visit around springtime. This time brings mild temperatures and you can explore the blooming vineyards.

You can also visit during the harvest season around August and September to see grapes being picked. If you visit the region during this time period, you get to see the fruit harvest and the starting point of Champagne production. The vineyards also change to stunning gold and crimson shades, creating a picturesque setting.

Final Thoughts

Exploring France’s Champagne region will leave you with fond memories and a deeper love and appreciation for the art of winemaking. So, pack your stuff, book that flight, and take a tour of one of the best Champagne Houses on our list.

If you have more questions about the tours, we’ve added links to their website or you can reach out to us and we’ll be happy to help you.

Our customers are talking about us

This tasting was great! We went to two tasting locations. At the first, we got detailed info about the champagne making process. We then saw the abbey of Dom Perignon and got some interesting history, before then finishing at another tasting location. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the champagne making process as well as what different champagnes are meant to be used for (e.g., dessert, pre-dinner drink, with food)

Trip Advisor

I went on the trip with 5 friends to celebrate my upcoming 60th birthday. It was the most amazing day. Our host for the day was excellent and very informative. The tastings and lunch were all of very high quality. I would not hesitate to recommend this trip

We really loved the small group tour to Pommery and Fagot. The price-quality was perfect, we had around 5 glasses of champaign; so a good idea to start your day happy. Our guide knew a lot about the region, and the way she presented was flawless, humorous and confident. And very important: no boring stories, just to the point. Highly recommended!

In addition to relaxing amenities like a steam room and spa, the hotel also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including cycling, hiking, and horseback riding.

Understanding Champagne as a Wine

It’s no secret that Champagne is a very special wine. Surprisingly, how these wines are made is still a mystery to many. At its core, Champagne is an incredibly well made wine that takes dedication and patience to produce. It is a wine that is intimately tied to the “terroir” of the region, and each house’s unique philosophy on production.

Champagne is made as a blend of three main grape varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, & Meunier . The process has its roots in blending, in which still wines of each varietal are made from different parcels of land and then blended together, creating the signature cuvee for each producer.

RELATED: Going Beyond Champagne: Try These Sparkling Wines from Around the World

In some cases, the winemaker may be working with as many as 400 different base wines! Once the blend is decided upon, the wine is inoculated with yeast for a second time, and sealed. As the fermentation occurs for the second time in the bottle, the bi-product — carbon dioxide — is trapped in the sealed environment. This creates the bubbles that make Champagne so famous.

The wines age with the yeasts in the bottle for a minimum of 15 months, but most producers choose to age their wines for much longer periods. This length of aging helps to create the toasty aromatic signature of Champagne.

RELATED: Sparkling Wine vs. Champange – What’s the Difference?

Each producer has its own signature blend. For example, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is a signature blend for that producer. However, the same producer may also make a multitude of other “cuvees”, including single-vintage or single-parcel Champagnes. Tasting Champagne is a unique experience in that both the land as well as the winemaker hold so much influence over the final product in the glass.

If you’re looking to taste a variety of Champagne styles from legendary producers, see our list below of some of our favorite eateries, wine bars and beyond.

Best Wine Bars, Cafes, & Restaurants in Champagne

  • Le Bocal (Reims, FR) – Local café & fishmonger, serving a plethora of raw seafood, one of Champagne’s most natural pairings. Casual with great outdoor seating.
  • Café du Palais (Reims, FR) – Classic French dining adorned by art deco décor and stained-glass ceilings dating from the 1930’s.
  • L’Epicerie Au Bon Manger (Reims, FR) – Casual & delicious cafe. Great for breakfast – also wonderful to pick up cheese & charcuterie for a lunch to-go.
  • Glu Pot (Reims, FR) – Local favorite pub for late-night bottles of bubbly. Ask for the off-menu list.
  • Perching Bar (Verzy, FR) – Wine bar built into the forest – a true treehouse Champagne tasting experience with spectacular views. No reservations.
  • Le Coq Rouge (Reims, FR) – Casual & busy bar, centrally located.
  • Tresors de Champagne (Reims, FR) – Bar featuring the producers of the « Special Club », founded in 1971 to promote small, family-run producers of Champagne. By-the-glass features change daily and a unique opportunity to try a custom flight of producers, many of whom are closed to the public.
  • Le Parc Les Crayeres (Reims, FR) – Located at a 20th-century château, Chef Philippe Mille’s more casual off-shoot of Michelin-starred Le Parc.
  • L’Assiette Champagnoise (Tinqueux, FR) – Fine dining from famed Chef Arnaud Lallement adorned with three Michelin stars, and naturally an exceptional wine list.

If you’d prefer to visit the Champagne producers themselves, see the stunning vineyards and understand their wine-making practices, we recommend to the below 4 producers for an all-encompassing experience. It’s an ideal lineup if you’re spending a weekend in Champagne country.

Frequently Asked Questions about Visiting Champagne France

How many days should you spend in champagne.

The number of days you spend in Champagne largely depends on your particular travel style. However, we recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Champagne to get a taste of what the region has to offer. In this amount of time, you can visit several of the major Champagne houses, enjoy wine tastings, and explore some of the beautiful countryside and historic towns within the region. 2-3 days will give you enough time to have a good overview of the region and its wine-making traditions. If you have more time to spare, you can easily spend a week or more in Champagne, especially if you want to visit some of the smaller, family-run Champagne houses or take part in some of the region’s many festivals and events.

What is the best time of year to visit Champagne?

Champagne is a beautiful wine region to visit year round. However, there are a few times of the year that are particularly good for visiting if you want to avoid crowds and have a more immersive experience: In Spring, between April and June , the vineyards start to come alive after the winter months. The weather is mild, and there are fewer tourists than in the summer. April and May are particularly good months to visit if you want to avoid crowds. During the autumn months of September and October , visiting Champagne is ideal as the grape harvest takes place, and the vineyards are at their most beautiful. The weather is also still mild, and there are fewer tourists than in the summer. In the winter, between November and March , the weather can be cold and snowy but it’s a great time to visit Champagne if you want to avoid crowds and experience the region’s Christmas markets and festivals. Many Champagne houses also offer unique winter experiences, such as champagne tastings by the fireplace.

What should you wear when you visit Champagne?

French style tends to be elegant and understated, so consider packing classic pieces that are both comfortable and stylish. Additionally, many Champagne houses have dress codes for wine tastings, so it’s important to dress modestly and avoid clothing that is too casual or revealing. If you plan to dine at a high-end restaurant or attend a special event, it’s a good idea to pack a few dressier items, such as a cocktail dress or a dress shirt and slacks. When you’re out during the day, wear comfortable shoes. Champagne is a region with plenty of vineyards, historic towns, and cobblestone streets (yikes heels!), so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that you can walk in for extended periods.

You made me want to hop the next flight to Paris. I can’t imagine a more perfect day!

We are bookmarking this article for when we get to Champagne! We are huge fans of the wine and hope to get there soon…thanks for all the terrific recommendations!

I absolutely love Champagne-but my favorite thing (other than visiting small grower-producers I represented in past) it sitting in wine bars and restaurants and getting to choose from sooooo many different Champagnes by the glass! Not just the big guys- give me some steak tartare and a glass of champers and it’s a good day!

I’ve spent time looking at how to plan a trip to visit Champagne and now I have a much better blueprint. This answered all my questions! And OMG the Perching Bar sounds like my idea of Heaven! A Treehouse with Champagne? Are you kidding me? I may go and then never leave.

I’m ready to pack my bags and hit the road. I reallly appreciate how well you described how to get there fraround m Paris. Sounds simple and certainly worth it

Every year we visit Champagne Roger-Constant Lemaire in Villers sous Châtillon a family runned business in the Marne valley. They produce excellent award winning champagnes from their 12 hectares. they are open the whole week and we always had a warm welcome. On Sundays they open only in the morning. For more information about their champagnes and their vinfication you can have a look on http://www.champagne-lemaire.fr

“Best Champagne Host Ever!”

What a fantastic day!! I can recommend Gwendal very highly. We have been to many wine regions around the world and have used many guides/drivers. Gwendal is as good as it gets. He is very knowledgeable and a most courteous host. Boom him with confidence.

Phenomenal experience!

This was a top-notch, must-do experience for us! I love sparkling wine and Gwendal made this such an educational and memorable experience. Everything was fabulous, from the selection of Champagne houses to give us a lot of variety, to the phenomenal lunch at the Garden, to Gwendal’s ability to teach us all about the region and history. Wow! That’s really all I can say.

Gevondyan_H

The very best!

I can’t say enough about this tour. Gwendal, our guide was delightful! And he was so informative. We learned so much about the Cathedral and the surrounding area. He provided great background information on the two wineries, before we took the tours. And he showed us interesting points of the church where Dom Perigon is buried. I would do a tour with Gwendal again, anytime. A fabulous day! Thank you Gwendal!!

“Unforgettable champagne tour services five stars.”

We were recommended by our hotel concierge service, a full day to discover the champagne region, it was a good choice for an escape from Paris. The trip was tailor-made with our favorite champagne. Our driver-guide was amazing, five star services, I highly recommend his services.

Champagne is the ultimate celebratory drink—one that’s practically guaranteed to put you in a good mood. So what better beverage is there to plan a vacation around? To find true Champagne, you’ll have to head to the eponymous region of Champagne, France. Bubbly wines from other areas are merely sparkling wine, prosecco, or Cava.

On these Champagne tours you can raise a glass, tour the caves, and learn the history of this festive tipple.

Taittinger is one of the most iconic champagne houses in the world, and now aficionados can book a special experience for their visit. Taittinger’s At the Table of Tibaud IV tour features a guided audio session focusing on Tibaud IV, an iconic figure from the Tattinger dynasty who is known as the Count of Champagne. Of course, some Champagne samples are also included―you can look forward to glasses of the Brut Réserve and the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs during the tour.

Billecart-Salmon

Looking for a more intimate Champagne tour experience? You can’t just book a tour online of Billecart-Salmon. Instead, prospective visitors will have to fill out a visit request form and hope that the house will grant your wish. Maison Billecart-Salmon warns that they receive a large number of visit requests and can’t accommodate everyone who wants a tour.

If your request is granted, you’ll be treated to a small group tour of the stunning vineyard, gardens, and cellars—followed by a generous Champagne tasting.

5 Hotels That Offer Free Happy Hours for Guests

Veuve Clicquot

Show off your expert palate at Veuve Clicquot’s Discovering Vintage tour where you’ll have the opportunity to do a blind tasting of the house’s Brut Carte Jaune cuvée and a vintage cuvée—will you be able to identify them correctly?

You’ll also be treated to a tour of Veuve Clicquot’s crayères (the vertical chalk pits where the Champagne is aged) along with stories and anecdotes from the brand’s history.

More About Champagne

Explore the route de champagne….

“Come quick, I am drinking the stars!” – with these words, the monk Dom Pérignon is said to have announced his invention of Champagne in the late 17th century. And he certainly wouldn’t be the first to be driven to poetic paroxysms by the scintillating wines of the Champagne region.

Alas, like so many great stories, this is probably something of a myth. The romantic quote was actually first used in an advertising campaign in the 1880s. And there’s strong evidence to suggest that sparkling wine was first produced intentionally around 1662 by Christopher Merret, a scientist from Gloucester. So perhaps it’s closer to West Country scrumpy than we might think.

“I drink Champagne when I’m happy”

Myths aside, there can be no doubt that Champagne is the benchmark by which all other sparkling wines are judged. Lily Bollinger, scion of the famous Champagne house famously said, “I drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.”

Whilst we would never dream of arguing with Mademoiselle Bollinger and we too are more than happy to drink Champagne anywhere, anytime, few things can beat drinking this most exquisite of drinks in the very region where it is produced.

Champagne Activities

Popular places to visit.

Of course, on our SmoothRed Champagne tours you’ll have plenty of chances to taste the region’s favourite export. But beyond the châteaux you’ll also want to visit some of its most popular attractions too.

Like the 13th century cathedral in the heart of romantic Reims. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the greatest gothic cathedrals in all of northern France. And, if you’re that way inclined, you might like to try counting all its 2,303 statues. Although you will end up with a sore neck.

Visit Epernay

Further south, in the heart of Champagne country, the small town of Epernay is home to many of the most famous producers of fizz. From Moët & Chandon to Perrier-Jouët, it’s a delightful place to spend an easy afternoon wandering on foot between Champagne houses and cellars.

Then head a few miles southeast to the scenic Lac du Der, the largest reservoir in Europe and a great place to relax or indulge in a spot of bird-watching. Or maybe visit the historic old town of Troyes to marvel at its gorgeous half-timbered houses.

And let’s not forget Hautvilliers, the lively vignerons village famous for its abbey where Dom Pérignon plied his trade as cellar-master. Not to mention other famous Champagne villages like Rilly-la-Montagne and Verzy.

Champagne Wine Guide

Wine and cuisine in champagne.

The Champagne region’s terroir is unique. Its Northern location, rugged climate, chalky soil and rolling countryside make it the ideal place to grow the Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes that are predominantly used to make Champagne.

We say predominantly because technically Champagne can use a number of other grapes too. Varietals such as Petit Meslier, Petit Blanc and Arbane are grown in very small quantities and added to blends, with some houses even producing wines made solely from one or more of these lesser known grapes.

The grapes of Champagne

The first, Pinot Noir, is most widely planted in the Aube region, while the second, Pinot Meunier takes up much of the Vallée de la Marne. The Côte des Blancs is dedicated almost exclusively to Chardonnay.

And, of course, they take their regional boundaries seriously in Champagne. Since 1942 the region has been overseen by the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), which rates vintages based on the quality of their grapes and vineyards. Nice work if you can get it.

Champagne cuisine

Now, some would say you shouldn’t really eat while drinking Champagne, but we think those people can fizz off. From refined dining like oysters and snails in Champagne sauce, to the region’s rustic pleasures of venison, boar, rabbit and pheasant, you can be sure to dine every bit as well as you drink on one of our champagne tours.

Champagne Gourmet Guide

Whilst some people believe one shouldn’t really eat while enjoying the wines of Champagne, in fact, the acidity and body of the drink make it a surprisingly good food wine. Champagne, be it pink, vintage or non-vintage, can be paired with a range of foods, with the latter – perhaps counter-intuitively – a good pick for fish and chips. The extra body of pink fizz makes it a little more flexible, whilst the extra depth and yeastiness of some vintage bottles makes them perfect to pair with wild mushrooms, parmesan or, for maximum decadence, truffles!

In terms of local delicacies to try on a visit to Champagne you have lots to choose from. Reims, the capital of the region, is famed for ham and, rather handily, mustard. In Troyes, andouillette is an offal sausage unlikely to appeal to all. Various cheeses are produced locally and one of those, Langres, is a great nibble alongside Champagne.

For those with a sweeter tooth, les biscuits roses de Reims , or pink biscuits, date to the 17 th century and are a crunchy treat, whilst Champagne-filled chocolate truffles are another fabulous, decadent treat.

There is no shortage of stunning restaurants in Reims, Epernay, Troyes and Champagne’s smaller towns and villages. From Michelin-starred establishments perfect for that special meal to local bistros serving venison, wild boar, rabbit or pheasant, you will be spoiled for choice. Expect to see Champagne in sauces, foams and deserts and, who knows, you might even get to drink a glass or two of the fizzy stuff on your Champagne wine holiday!

Grape Escapes

The delightful Champagne region remains our most popular destination, but what makes it so great? In part, it is because the region is so easy to get to . It is accessible from central Paris in just 45 minutes using the high speed rail line linking Paris with eastern France. Charles de Gaulle airport is even closer with a journey time to Champagne of 30 minutes on this line. For our UK customers, it is situated less than 2 ½ hours’ drive from Calais making it the UK’s closest premium wine region.

Champagne Reims Cathedral- OT Reims

Other reasons include the recently UNESCO Classified picturesque hillsides and valleys,  covered in vines and forests and the sense of history associated with the region. The city of Reims is home to no less than four UNESCO World Heritage sites, including one of the finest gothic cathedrals in northern Europe where 25 kings of France were crowned. It was on the front line in both the first and second World Wars, and is also where the formal surrender was signed at the end of World War II. However, all of these reasons tell only part of the story. The main reason remains the world-famous wine.

The Beginner's Guide to Visiting Champagne

By Mark Ellwood

Montagne de Reims

If that celebratory glass of champagne has gone to your head, you’re not alone. Americans are drinking France's most famous fizz more and more: In 2017, stateside shipments of Champagne reached their highest levels ever , at 23 million bottles (a five percent increase from the previous year). What if you want to go further than the local wine store, and visit the land that gave the world the ultimate mood-lifter in a glass ? You won't be able to just show up and traipse around Veuve Clicquot's svelte vineyards; you'll need a plan. We gathered our need-to-know tips into this handy primer to help you out.

First things first: The term "Champagne" isn't a catch-all for anything sparkling in a glass. It refers to a type of bubbly, made according to specific standards, within one of the sub-zones of France's Champagne region. This winemaking region surrounds Paris on the northeast side, with the cities of Reims and Epernay often used as visitors' home bases (heavy-hitter producers like the aforementioned Veuve and Mumm are there, too). They're both easily accessible by train from Paris and less than a two-hour ride away, though you can rent a car (or hire a driver—particularly recommended if you plan to drink and not stay overnight).

Epernay France

Epernay is one of our favorite home bases for a Champagne tour.

Two days is plenty for a first visit, according to Caroline Brun, one of the area's foremost guides. “Don’t worry," she says with a laugh. "You will be addicted to Champagne after that first visit, and next time, you can visit for longer.” Avoid harvest time, usually in late summer, especially if you want to see the smaller, independent vineyards rather than just the big name brands. Those owner-operated set-ups—known as grower champagnes—will likely be too busy to welcome visitors. Instead, Brun recommends going in October and November. “The harvest is over, but you can still find some grapes remaining in the vineyards," she says. "The colors are changing, so all the slopes aren’t green, but reddish gold.”

What to Pack

Though quaffing a glass of champagne might be glamorous, adopt a more practical approach for outfitting yourself when you visit the region. Bring sneakers or flat shoes: Many of the roads are cobbled, the cellars are uneven, and you’ll likely be picking your way through the vines. A sweater or down vest is handy, too: The weather in this part of northern France can prove rather English (think: gray and rainy, regardless of time of year), and the caves are often chilly, too.

Have a Strategy

Don’t expect to be spontaneous, either. Unlike Napa, or even Bordeaux, where tasting rooms are usually ready to welcome walk-ins, even the larger houses in Champagne operate by appointment. Check websites to book your slot (be prompt: lateness isn’t just considered rude—it might result in your forfeiting access). Wineries open in the morning and almost all will shut over lunch. “Remember that it’s really important to have a hearty breakfast, since you may well have your first tasting at 10 a.m. [before drinking all day], and you may not be used to that,” says Jenna Jones, from wine tour specialist Grape Escapes .

Logistics in the region can be frustrating. Public transportation is patchy, and taxi prices are exorbitant: Call for a pick-up from a vineyard beyond city limits, and you’ll pay not only for your journey, but for however long it takes for the taxi to arrive, too. If you want to explore those less accessible champagne houses, it’s best to book a tour that includes transport. You can book a tour through Grape Escapes, and Brun, too, offers custom private tours, starting at €350 per person; contact her at [email protected].

Montagne de Reims

If time is short, visit Montagne de Reims, home to Ruinart and Taittinger.

Where to Taste

Champagne has five main regions , or zones. Stay in Reims to explore the Montagne de Reims , which focuses on pinot noir. This zone makes the fullest bodied Champagnes, often intended to age. By contrast, base yourself in Epernay to explore the pinot meunier–focused region of the Vallée de la Marne . Pinot meunier is usually blended with other grapes; for example, it’s used with pinot noir to make delicious blanc des noirs . Stay there, too, if you’re curious to see the Côte des Blancs , which focuses solely on chardonnay-based bubbly. This is also used in blends or to make the light, aperitif-style blanc de blancs Champagne. You could make Troyes your base if you want to explore two lesser-known areas: the Aube , which contributes grapes mostly for non-vintage fizz, and the newish Côte de Sézanne , which specializes in chardonnay-focused plantings.

The first three regions will hold the greatest interest for most travelers. You can visit all three in a single day, albeit with a little planning, but if you’d rather spend less time commuting and dive deep into a single region, Jones recommends focusing on the Montagne de Reims. Most household name champagnes lean heavily on pinot noir, she says, so visitors’ palates tend to be accustomed to this style. Such familiarity also makes tasting more accessible, and it’s easier for a newbie to discern the subtle differences between the houses there.

Among the major marquees, don’t miss Taittinger , which most insiders agree is the best organized and most insightful of the visitor experiences. Ruinart , too, is a standout. Among grower champagnes, try Eric Rodez in Ambonnay, which makes an unusual blanc de blancs from chardonnay grown there, or the Côte des Blancs–based Henry de Vaugency , where the English-speaking owner Pascal conducts tours personally (his Grand Cru quality wines start at less than €20 per bottle, too). There’s a fine museum at the tiny vineyard of Meteyer , which also produces superb Champagne from the Côte des Noirs; another notable nearby is Lamiable , in the Grand Cru village of Tours sur Marne.

For more suggestions of standout boutique producers, check Vine Trail . One major advantage to visiting smaller produces like these: The entire process takes place onsite, so you can see the journey from grape to bottle. Larger brands, by contrast, tend to welcome visitors solely to their cellars, where the bottles are stored.

Royal Champagne Hotel Spa

Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa

Where to Stay And Eat

Epernay is arguably the handiest base, as it’s at the center of the region. What's more, its main drag is the Avenue de Champagne, whose tenants read like a roll call of the area’s best-known alums: Moët & Chandon (tip: despite the SNL skit, it's pronounced "Mo-ET"), Perrier Jouët, Pol Roger, and more. Even better, a new five-star hotel and spa, Royal Champagne , opened this spring north of the town and is owned by Franco-American couple Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, who also own biodynamic Champagne house Leclerc Briant . It’s on a storied site, where Napoleon once guzzled a few magnums. The head sommelier of its restaurant, Alberto Segade—a veteran of London’s Claridge's —is especially knowledgeable.

Reims has its own attractions beyond the local wine—its Gothic cathedral, for example—and as a university town, is much livelier in the evenings; both Ruinart and Taittinger are here. Stay in the city center at the historic, 18-room Grand Hotel des Templiers . There’s a fistful of Michelin-starred restaurants in the city—and though delicious, they tend to be overpriced. Consider eating among the locals at fish restaurant Le Bocal , tucked in the back of a fishmonger, and the funky, deli-style wine shop and wine bar Au Bon Manger .

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider Troyes . Less business-focused than the other two, it retains far more of those medieval buildings, with their familiar, whitewashed wooden façades. One of them is the wood-timbered Maison de Rhodes , right in the historic center. It was once the local base for the Knights of Malta, hence the name. The wine bar and shop Au Crieurs de Vin in town features mostly organic Champagnes, many of them surprisingly affordable.

8 cellars where the Champagne sparkles

Champagne Food and Wine

Dans les caves de la maison Moët & Chandon à Épernay, en Champagne.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 9 August 2023, updated on 20 April 2024

Miles of underground galleries and millions of bottles of preciously kept champagne away from light and heat... In Reims and Epernay, cellar visits to the largest champagne houses are among the highlights of a trip. And they sparkle with stories and expertise.

Mercier: Love at first sight

Les caves du champagne Mercier, à Épernay, en Champagne.

Visitors to Mercier take a tour on a small train around part of its 18km of cellars, 30 metres under the chalky soils of Épernay – before rising to the surface for a tasting. En route, a giant barrel makes you stop in your tracks. Eugène Mercier built this barrel – the world’s largest – in the 19th century and presented it at the 1889 World Fair in Paris. It won second prize… just behind the Eiffel Tower. Champagne Mercier

Moët & Chandon: History and tradition

La cave Moët & Chandon à Epernay, en Champagne.

Considered one of the most famous champagne houses at the head of the largest vineyard in the region, Moët & Chandon also has the largest cellars, a 28-kilometre labyrinth carved into the white chalk of Champagne, under the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. Whether you opt for the ‘Traditional’, ‘Grand Vintage’ or ‘Imperial’ visit (the latter a nod to Napoleon, a great lover of the place), you’ll soak up history, beginning in the domaine’s courtyard beside the statue of Dom Pérignon. Allow time for the tasting rooms and shop.

Mumm: The iconic red ribbon

Les caves de la maison Mumm, à Reims, en Champagne.

Its white label with red ribbon became known around the world. To understand the manufacturing process of this iconic vintage, the Mumm house, founded in Reims in 1827, offers a ‘Cordon Rouge Experience’ which engages the senses, 7 or 14 metres underground. A small museum retraces the history and savoir-faire of Mumm, before a tasting break during which other vintages can be sampled on request. Mumm house

Taittinger: A family passion

Les caves de la maison Taittinger, à Reims, en Champagne.

Located on Reims’ Place Saint-Nicaise, where the abbey of the same name stood in the 13th century, the Maison Taittinger contains some beautiful remains. At a depth of 18 metres, the journey through time continues in the whitewashed Gallo-Roman spaces that are part of the UNESCO-listed ‘Coteaux, maisons et caves de champagne’. Some 15 million bottles rest here, where the ancestral savoir-faire of an enthusiastic family continues to work – proven by the tasting at the end of the visit. Champagne Taittinger

Veuve-Clicquot: Champagne for women

Les caves de la maison Veuve Clicquot à Reims, en Champagne.

In 1810, Barbe Nicole Ponsardin, Clicquot’s widow and the first woman to run a champagne house, created her own vintage. She also invented the ‘riddling table’ process to clarify the champagne. Since then, the yellow-gold label of Veuve-Clicquot has become a worldwide reference. The visit, aided by giant screens, tells this beautiful story – followed by a tasting. Champagne Veuve Clicquot

Lanson: From the vineyard to the flute

Les caves de la maison Lanson, à Reims, en Champagne.

A plot of vines in the heart of Reims is Lanson’s privilege. The visit, entitled ‘From the vineyard to the flute’, begins out in the open air in this miniature vineyard before going through the champagne-making method, step by step, in the vat rooms. The visit ends in the ‘Corridor of Time’ under the portraits of the house’s successive leaders, before a tasting. Champagne Lanson

Ruinart: Magic in the basement

Les caves de la maison Ruinart, à Reims, en Champagne.

The oldest champagne house, founded in 1729 in Reims and listed as a historic site since 1931, deserves its two-hour visit. Lying 38 metres underground and kept at 11 degrees, the chalk cellars housing Ruinart’s precious flasks are a splendour – as are the walls of bottles stretching as far as the eye can see. Also moving are the tiny sculptures carved into the chalk by generations of workers. The tasting then has even more meaning. Champagne Ruinart

Vranken-Pommery: Champagne makes art

Le domaine Vranken-Pommery à Reims, en Champagne.

Imagine a beautiful Elizabethan-style estate, just a stone’s throw from Reims Cathedral. Built by Madame Pommery in the 19th century, it houses one of the most famous champagne houses. A magnificent staircase leads to 120 chalkboards connected by 18km of underground galleries decorated with mural frescoes. There, an immense barrel of 75,000 litres – equivalent to 100,000 bottles – will leave you speechless. An annual exhibition of contemporary art completes the public space, adding an artistic touch to this champagne house. Vranken-Pommery
