Service was outstanding. The bartender was incredibly friendly and helpful. The beers were very good. The space was very cool. Tours are pricey. There are better places nearby to grab a beer. Largely caters to the tourist trade.

Make sure you pre-buy as most tours were sold out . Lots of history talks and looking at old things. Many samples and ends with a full glass of your choice. Overall a neat idea and worth doing once if you like history or just like beer.

Gord and I did the brewery tour at the Alexander Keith's Brewery. I've done it twice before and it's always interesting. There were various guides who were very knowledgeable who broke the tour into chunks. After seeing different rooms, we were led into Stag's Head, where there was a small kitchen party. Along the way, we were given samples of Keith's IPA, Lunenburg Coffee and Cacao Stout, Highland Pilsner and Le Passage Gose. At the end of the party, we were bid adieu. It was a fun tour and I'd definitely recommend it.

This afternoon, as part of our sales conference, we did a tour of the Alexander Keith's Brewery. There were about 55 of us so we were broken up into two groups. Actors in period costumes take you back to 1863 (Alexander's time). We were given an explanation of how beer is made. Then we were led into the Stag's Head Tavern for some sampling of their IPA, premium white, red amber ale and/or dark ale. Keith's IPA is my beer of choice so I tried their premium white ... I liked it. We had some time before our dinner reservations so we had a drink in the Red Stag Tavern, which is attached to the brewery. It was a fun tour ... I'd done it years ago. I still found it entertaining yet again.

Tried to check this place out on our recent trip to Nova Scotia but it was closed for a private event. Locals outside told us not to waste our money and that the tour here is $$$ and not that good. It was fun walking around the building and checking out the attached pubs and eateries. On the weekend they have a market here in the courtyard area. I still might try to give a try if we are ever back in Halifax. Maybe having a few drinks pre-tour might make it seem a little better. But still, having two local couples tell us not to waste our money here doesn't bode well.

Tourist trap. Not a place to eat or drink. They referred me to a "partner bar" that I couldn't find. Complete waste of time

Of the forty or so brewery tours I've been on over the years, Alexander Keith's offers easily the most unique. It celebrates the history of the brewery just as much (if not more) than the brewing process, which I think is a great decision given the fact that Alexander Keith's is one of the oldest operating breweries in North America. So instead of a relatively sedate and scientific conversation about how long wort is heated, the guides talk through who Alexander Keith was, what the brewery meant to Halifax and all of the historical context that explained why the business succeeded. Yes, you still learn about how beer is made. But you also learn why. After the tour through the brewhouse, you're led into a basement pub and tasting room. That's where the tour shines - in addition to the guides being able to pour a good beer, they also just so happen to be fantastic musicians. So you get a beer and then get treated to, essentially, a private concert that is meant to replicate what drinking in the mid-19th century would feel like. It was a delightful time and an absolute must-do if you like beer, history, or beer history!

Photo of Jason L.

I recommend the brewery tour. It is pricey ($26 each) but you get a lot for your money. There is a standard tour through the brewery, looking at the stills and tasting the hops. They provide some interesting historical tidbits about Halifax. Tour ends in the basement pub where we have a good old fashioned Celtic party, with music, beer, and merriment. They are generous with the included beer samples along the way, which made me feel less bad for paying so much for a brewery tour.

Nice place to tour, beer school was the best part, only one off the places in Nova Scotia tio do a proper 9 step pour of Stella Artois

My boyfriend and I had an excellent time at the Keith's brewery tour. We were the only two people taking the tour and it was a rather intimate experience. All the ladies doing the tour were very friendly and we really enjoyed ourselves with all the different samples they gave us on the tour.

Photo of Sharon L.

If you are ever in Halifax, make sure you come check out the tour at Alexander Keith's brewery. The admission price is $26 per adult, a little on the pricier end but totally worth the experience. $3 cheaper if you are a student, senior or from the military but if you check into Yelp, you get 15% off the tour! The tour is a 1 hour, longer than your typical brewery tour but you will get a full history of Alexander Keith and how is brewery started including a walk through tour of how how the beer is brewed and even a view of one of the dining rooms in his historic house during that time. After the historical part of the tour is done, it's followed by a theatrical act by some of the actors in one of the cellars where they sing and dance offering you a more fun and intimate experience. You will sure get enough of your beer samplings on this tour!

keith's brewery tour halifax

Who was Alexander Keith?

Alexander Keith was born in Scotland in 1795 and spent his early adult life learning the brewing craft with his uncle. After numerous travels perfecting his trade (and hopefully enjoying the world), he finally settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1817. At the time, there was only one big brewery in operation, but it was not performing well. The brewery had been the official brew provider of the British navy, but its contract was cancelled because British sailors were complaining about the appalling low quality of the brew.

Enter Alexander Keith, who was the only certified brewer in the whole British North America at that time. Keith rapidly found himself as the manager of the brewery and turned the place’s poor reputation around. In no time, the 23-year-old brought back the mighty British Navy as a client. Business was so good, in fact, that he bought the place and immediately started expanding to a proper industrial scale.

In addition to his exceptional brewing skills, Alexander Keith was a prominent public figure in Halifax and a true titan in the entire maritime region. He was elected as a city alderman and later served as the mayor from 1843 to 1844. His strong leadership and commitment to the community earned him the nickname “The People’s Mayor.” He also served in senior management of several companies, including the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Investment Society, the Halifax Fire Insurance Company, Colonial Life Assurance Company, and the Provincial Permanent Building.

When Alexander Keith passed away, news of his death dominated the front pages of nearly every Canadian newspaper, and the entire city of Halifax was deeply affected. As a mark of respect, business owners shuttered their shops, and downtown streets came to a standstill. The procession in Halifax was so massive that it took a full ten minutes at any given point for everyone to pass through. To this date, October 5th, Alexander Keith’s birthdate is still widly celebrated, even by his main local competitors. A news story from 2015 recalls how 1500 people gathered at the museum to celebrate for his anniversary.

keith's brewery tour halifax

How did Alexander Keith become such as staple of Canadian beer?

As a testament to his enduring legacy, the slogan “Alexander Keith’s: Those Who Like It, Like It A Lot” still graces the brewery’s products to this day. The Alexander Keith Brewery continues to be an essential part of Halifax’s identity, preserving the rich history and tradition of brewing in the region.

The brewing mecca of the day was London, where the porter was invented less than a century before, driven by the higher want of high alcohol beer of the Industrial Revolution. IPAs were also the sensation of the time. Both brewing processes involved new innovations and new discoveries about the water profile, grain bills, and proper fermentation techniques. Keith would have already have been exposing to this before setting foot in Nova Scotia.

Alexander Keith’s IPA

As porter was starting to fade away and IPAs became more prominent, Alexander Keith’s very first official beer would be the good old IPA. But hold on, this wasn’t your modern-day, super-hoppy West Coast IPA. Oh no, Keith’s iconic brew had a more subtle charm to it. It was the British Navy’s best drinking choice because those IPAs, along with porters and marzbeers , had a higher alcohol content that kept them fresh during those long sea voyages across the globe.

Naturally, the IPA style was perfect for long journeys, making it a top choice for exporting to other provinces and countries. Even today, the flagship IPA remains a star product, but some experts say it’s a bit too lightly hopped to be a proper IPA.

Funny enough, even the modern day IPA hasn’t reached the extreme hop fanfare of modern trends. At the 2016 Canadian Brewing Awards, Alexander Keith’s IPA won third place, but… not in the IPA category. Nope! It snagged that spot in the “North American Style Blonde or Golden Ale” category. So, it might not be your traditional IPA, but it’s still a tasty brew with a cool history to sip on! Cheers to the hoppy goodness! 🍻

What is the legacy of Keith’s Brewing today?

As for the impact on Canada, Alexander Keith’s Brewery holds a special place in Canadian beer history. It is not only one of the oldest surviving breweries in the country but also a symbol of maritime culture and identity. The brewery has become intertwined with the history of Halifax and Nova Scotia, and its products have been enjoyed by generations of Canadians.

Over the years, the brewery expanded its operations, and by the mid-19th century, it was exporting its beer to various parts of Canada and beyond. The brewery’s reputation for producing high-quality beers and its status as a cultural institution in Halifax continued to grow.

keith's brewery tour halifax

Despite the ups and downs, Alexander Keith’s Brewery managed to survive through various economic challenges, including prohibition in Canada during the early 20th century. Introduced as a war measure, the prohibition went on to continue until the second world war in Nova Scotia, much longer than in most Canadian provinces (in Quebec, the usual outlier, prohibition lasted a mere 12 months…)

In the latter half of the 20th century, the brewery faced stiff competition from larger national and international beer brands. However, Keith’s managed to maintain a loyal following among Canadians, particularly in the Maritimes.

In 1971, the Oland family, another prominent brewing family in the region, acquired Alexander Keith’s Brewery. The Oland family has played a significant role in preserving the brewery’s heritage and maintaining its traditional brewing methods.

Today, Alexander Keith’s Brewery remains an essential part of Canadian beer culture, and its beers continue to be enjoyed by Canadians and beer enthusiasts worldwide. While the brewery has experienced changes over the centuries, its legacy as a pioneer in Canadian brewing and its impact on the country’s beer culture remain significant.

  • Q1796FZvincentl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This is a TRUE story, I swear. Hello there, In the summer of 1960 or 61, I went to Darthmouth, working as a sailor on an Irving tanker. In the evening we went across to Halifax to see the town. Actually we ended up in a bootlegger joint probably cause we were too young or there were no place selling beer. This was a private home where we sat around the kitchen table qnd the woman of the house served us some beer..... don't ask me what kind..... and we all got drunk. I was remembering this anecdote while drinking a good cold Alexander Keith this afternoon while watching TV. I thought perhaps my story would bring a smie to your face. They put an enormous amount of effort into the experience and brought the story to life. My advice would be to eat before the tour, as they’re generous with the samples. It’s the first tour of that nature, where I’ve felt I really had the opportunity to sample what is produced in pleasant surroundings (I won’t spoil the surprise), rather than a thimble full of liquid, and then thrown out into the gift shop to buy the gin, whisky, beer whatever it is. • peicenl 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor and underwhelming Traveler’s Award - How?! As I was planning my itinerary for the Halifax trip, my research yielded multi-page article and advertisement on this establishment. It was enticing. Upon arrival in port, I ventured out to find this place. The sign on top of the building was easy to spot. However, the entrance was labeled ‘Hotel’ which I easily walked pass. It so happened that the “brewery” retail front and brewery tour is a stall inside this indoor stonewalled farmers market that wasn’t clearly labeled. I find the practically empty indoor space quint. Now that I found the so called brewery, it was underwhelming. I was upset at myself for insisting to visit this establishment. What a waste of time that I could have spent at other attractions or just sit at the waterfront people watching. 1. You can’t sample beer on-site if you are not a part of their beer tour. 2. There are no more tours available for the day. (Um I see two cruise ships in port so wouldn’t a business want to seize the opportunity to make money by offering more tours?) 3. The store front had limited beer selections and limited merchandise. 4. The store sells four- and six-pack beers and only one variety is in a single can. If I can’t sample the beer, how would I know if it’s worth buying a four- or six-pack? 5. It’s illegal to drink alcoholic beverages on the streets and in the farmers market (steps from the brewery stall) and the brewery doesn’t allow beer drinking onsite for non-tour visitors. So what the heck - how does one sample beer and choose which ones to buy? 6. They don’t sell a variety pack which I’m baffled given the cruise port they reside in. If you are from the cruise ship with customs liquor restrictions, you are out of luck. It’ll be a game of Eeny Meeny Miny Moe, pray that you picked a good beer worth taking home... I’ve visited many breweries and micro-breweries state-side and aboard. This is the most obscure establishment I encountered. Needless to say, the whole visit and experience turned me off. #1 Halifax Citadel National Historic Site

Towering over downtown Halifax, the Citadel is a testament to the city's military past. Four forts have occupied this hilltop since 1749, when Edward Cornwallis, a career British military officer, governed the region; the fort that stands today dates back to 1856. Visitors can wander the Citadel's corridors and learn about Halifax's involvement in major wars, such as the American Revolution, the American Civil War and both World Wars. The on-site Army Museum offers a closer look at the fortress's history. And to truly feel what it was like to be on the hill back in its heyday, make sure to come at lunchtime, when reenactors of the Royal Artillery fire the traditional noon gun.

You can also interact with members of the 78th Highland Regiment. From May through October, these kilted reenactors offer free guided tours of the fort and provide insight on what it was like to be a soldier there. You can even learn to shoot a 19th-century rifle from one of these reenactors (for an extra fee and age restrictions apply).

Craft Beer Guide / Beer Flight

What are the best Halifax Breweries to visit this year? Well, we’ve done the work to figure that out for you! We have sampled all their brews, spent time in their taprooms and read all the online reviews to come up with our take on the best Halifax Breweries to explore this year!

Breweries List

Halifax Breweries

When one thinks of Halifax, the first thought normally goes to the delicious and plentiful seafood that you can get when you visit this city. But a close second thought should be how great it is to enjoy a cold craft pint. With an abundance of bars and pubs and a growing scene of local craft breweries, Halifax is a beautiful place to explore and enjoy good local beer.

What are the top Halifax Breweries?

Did you know that Halifax, Nova Scotia has more pubs per capita than any other city in Canada?! It might not seem to make much sense but with 6 degree-granting universities in Halifax, the need for beer is high! The high amount of post-secondary adults has driven the demand for not only beer but high quality craft beer in this east coast city. You won’t have to stroll far to find a pub that serves up local craft beer, but we recommend going right to the source.

With a number of craft breweries located within walking distance, there’s no better reason to stroll the city on a beautiful day and explore some of the unique and cool craft breweries in Halifax. Or, better yet, join one of the many brewery tours in the area!

Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Cailin Alexander Keith's beer selfie - Alexander Keith's Brewery Tour in Halifax, Nova Scotia

One of the most famous men in the history of Halifax, Nova Scotia (my home town) is Mr. Alexander Keith. Not only was he our mayor several times (once people even tried to vote him in posthumously) but he was also the founder and master brewer of Alexander Keith’s Beer founded in 1820. After almost 200 years Mr. Keith and his fine beer are still quite popular in the city and the best way to learn about him and enjoy the beer is to take a tour of the brewery.

Thanks to Intercontinental Hotel Groups, who recently awarded me with 34,000 rewards points, I was recently able to experience the Alexander Keith’s Brewery tour with a few of my friends who had never been. The cool thing about these points is not only can you use them for booking a hotel stay at one of their properties, but you can also use them with their concierge to book tours and activities in the city you are staying. My friends have lived in Halifax for a couple of years but had yet to experience the Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour so I cashed in the points and off we went to learn about the history of this fine beer.

As you go on the tour you are taken back in time to 1863 and you learn about the ways of life back then and the simple ingredients use to make this fine ale.

Friends enjoying the Alexander Keith’s Brewery Tour

The Alexander Keith’s Brewery tour is one of the best brewery tours that I have ever done, even compared to all of the breweries that I have visited on my travels. The tour is quite fun, informative and entertaining and of course you get to enjoy a brew or two for yourself. It is also one of the top things to do in Halifax ! However to learn more about it check out my post over on the IHG Rewards website   and see more great photos from my tour.

Special thanks to IHG for hosting me on this experience. As always all opinions and views expressed are my own.

Are there still boothleggers in Nova Scotia? I suppose not. Hope you have a good week, Vincent Lapierre Read more Written November 26, 2023

  • Darcy73 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Charming guides and plenty of beer to sample There’s not a huge amount to physically see, but the young and enthusiastic guides more than make up for it. • U4482GRjosephg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Love the Samples! This is the only brewery tour that starts you with a sample, gives samples as you go through various sections of the brewery and then ends up with more samples and musical entertainment at the end of the tour. They have it down to a 'T' and get everything done within the hour. Easy location to find, very historical building and a remarkable background of the founder of the brewery. Parking is right across the street. Tour guides were very knowledgeable and easy going. You need to do this tour! Read more Written October 12, 2023
