Chicago Walking Tours
Discover the city's culture, history and more, we explore chicago and its neighborhoods.
Chicago is one of the world’s great walking cities. At L Stop Tours, we carefully design each of our tours to include a mix of Chicago’s famous sites and attractions — historic architecture, cultural venues and interesting places to enjoy food and drink.
Our tours are fun, engaging and provide a unique perspective of the city that you won’t find on other tours. We go inside famous buildings, not just look at them from the river or the top of a double-decker bus. We visit pubs and restaurants that have great Chicago stories, not just establishments that are convenient to our route. We explore diverse neighborhoods throughout the city, learning about their history and culture. And, whenever possible, we take a ride on the L train, Chicago’s iconic public transit system. L Stop Tours offers experiences that are perfect for both tourists and locals.
L Stop Tours has been called one of the most unique Chicago neighborhood tours in the city by Choose Chicago, the official destination marketing organization for the city.

What people love about Greeter
We went around the city where Denise showed me not only some of the main landmarks of the city but also perks and views that only locals know about and that I would not have the chance to visit if it was not for her. Denise also describes the neighborhoods, buildings, history of the city and points for me to visit during my stay. It was excellent, thank you!
“Sofia was spectacular during our tour. She took us to new places and told us several facts that made our vision of Chicago even broader. We will definitely recommend it to all our friends who travel to Chicago. It was SENSATIONAL!”
“Jim was great. He had so much knowledge about the history of the city and the buildings. We had planned on walking some of the area he took us on by ourselves, but we would have missed so much and not learned nearly as much about the buildings, the people, the city as a whole.”
“Brian was fantastic! Our time with him was better than we could have expected. We used his restaurant suggestions for our entire stay. We learned information about the city that we would have never known . I have already recommended this service to friends and will definitely use it again myself.”
“In three weeks of being in Chicago, this was by far the greatest highlight. My tour and connection with Sharyne really elevated the experience and drove me to want to move to Chicago sooner than I’d planned to. I hope in the coming years I call this city home.”

You will have a variety of boating companies to choose from along with different sizes of boats and ships.
You will definitely be able to find a ship that will cater to your needs. Some may be river boats and some may be larger boats that can also offer a cruise and dinner on Lake Michigan. Whatever your choice may be, it’s a great way to spend time on the water.
People love to go out on Lake Michigan especially when the weather gets warm. Chicago also has cruise boats that offer different themes with their cruises. Some are sightseeing architectural cruises. Some themes involve firework viewing during the cruises. These different themes can allow you to relax and enjoy the entertainment, and night views of the city. Others themes can involve a sightseeing sunset cruise if you desire to spend a romantic evening on the water.
Some cruises may just involve cruising under the moonlight and enjoying the presence of a loved one. You can also explore the city on one of the many River Cruises . These tours and cruises are seasonal as the River and Lake Michigan freezes in the winter. However in the spring, summer and fall the lake and river are alive with plenty of action and touring boats. The ships are very busy catering to their customers needs for a good time, and a terrific sightseeing and tour experience.
Chicago Neighborhood Walks
Welcome to chicago neighborhood walks.
If you’re here, you’re probably curious about walking some of Chicago’s neighborhoods, but don’t know where to start. Resources are plentiful for walks and tours in the Loop and attractions in the Near North Side, but what about the rest of the city where 95% of the population lives? Where should you go and what should you see when you get there? What is a good walking route to take?
We had those same questions when we started walking Chicago neighborhoods four years ago. In conversations with friends and family, we discovered that many of them would go walking if they had those answers and an easy to follow map.
Because we have enjoyed getting to know the history, culture and people of Chicago through our walks, we want to make it easy for others to do the same. We’re posting our walks here so you can pick a walk and go. We’ve walked over 50 neighborhoods and we are working on getting them all posted here. You can sign up at the bottom of the page and be alerted when we post a new walk or just check back before you set out to see if we have anything new up. When you get back, please post a comment with your experience, “must sees” or great places to eat.
So now you have no excuse! Get out there and start walking!

There is no shortage of things to discover in Chicago—I love being an urban explorer and uncovering its hidden places. I have an MA in Public History from Loyola University Chicago, and I have worked as a museum educator and kindergarten teacher. My desire to learn new things fuels my passion for educating others, which I get to experience every day as a Chicago tour guide. I live in the northern neighborhood of Rogers Park.
Whether you are a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, the vibrant history and modern majesty of Chicago never ceases to amaze. I’m a graduate of Columbia College with an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Art. I’ve worked for many years as an educator at City Colleges of Chicago. As tour guide at Chicago Detours, I integrate my enthusiasm for culture and architecture with my passion as an educator. West Town/Noble Square area is home for me.
With our Chicago neighborhoods, vibrant cultural institutions and nearly two centuries of larger-than-life stories, there’s never a dull moment here! I’m a fifth generation Chicagoan and a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to guiding tours, I’m a creative writer and amateur genealogist. I also enjoy the city’s dynamic theater scene. You can also read overlooked stories from 19th-century newspapers on my “Second Glance History” blog. I live in River North.
Chicago is unique as it always evolves into the future while holding on to the past. I’m fascinated by how people latch on to old architecture but happily pave over others. My background is in theater and performance and I’ve been a tour guide here for more than 10 years. Currently I’m finishing my Master’s in Public History at Loyola University because I love to teach the history of this scrappy city. I’m in the Edgewater neighborhood.
Operations Coordinator and Tour Guide
Chicago’s history is so fascinating, you could spend a lifetime uncovering its secrets…I’m willing to give it a try! I have an M.A. in US History from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and then pursued doctoral studies in Urban History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I love to learn new aspects of Chicago’s rich history and then share my knowledge as a tour guide with Chicago Detours. I live in Ravenswood.
Content Manager and Tour Guide
Chicago has so many neighborhoods, buildings, and by-ways that it’s hard to go long without seeing something new, or something familiar from a new angle. I studied Cinema History for my M.A. from the University of Chicago. I’ve worked as a culture writer for various publications and as an educator of the humanities at the City Colleges of Chicago. I’m thrilled to share my love of this city’s busy past and unique architectural spaces with Chicago Detours. I live in the Chicago neighborhood of Lincoln Park.

Inside Chicago’s New Neighborhood Travel Show

“The 77” video campaign is one way Choose Chicago is encouraging inclusive community tourism. And it’s a tasty one.
Elizabeth Casolo
Chicago is home to many iconic local eateries. At La Catedral Cafe & Restaurant, you can choose from up to 14 kinds of chilaquiles. At Old Fashioned Donuts, you can order fresh donuts from a man with over 50 years of experience making them by hand.
Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism bureau, invites you to dig into Chicago’s historic and culture-packed neighborhoods with its new web series, “ The 77: A City of Neighborhoods .”
Funded by an American Rescue Plan grant , the video campaign — posted on YouTube and Choose Chicago’s website — highlights five sets of neighborhoods across the city’s 77 community areas .
Mark Skala is the creative director and founder at Skalawag Productions, the production company behind the campaign. Skala said most episodes follow a similar trajectory: opening with a longstanding food establishment, transitioning to the neighborhood’s history and culture, and then ending with a small business “pioneer.”
Skift learned more about the campaign and its progress since the premiere earlier this month.
Gathering around the dinner table
Cinematic shots of food and cocktails greet viewers in each episode. Chicago is a foodie’s paradise, and the campaign’s creators embraced that.
“Food is the hook that gets people interested,” said Rob Fojtik, Choose Chicago’s neighborhood strategy vice president and the show’s host and executive producer.
As Skala puts it, the show gets you to salivate. Skalawag Productions specifically focuses on food and beverage videography, which set them apart when Choose Chicago solicited campaign pitches.
The series hopes to demonstrate the culture and history of the city’s neighborhoods, but food is an easy way to draw in an audience.
“You can learn about history, but, if there’s no place to go to get lunch or dinner or a cocktail, your trip is going to be less fun,” Fojtik said.
Narrowing down the neighborhoods
Choose Chicago could only showcase a handful of neighborhoods in the series launch. There were two deciding factors when whittling down which communities would be featured.
Partnerships with chambers of commerce and community development corporations establish trust with neighborhoods. This can get Choose Chicago into the door of that mom-and-pop shop, filming for up to 12 hours a day.
But, beyond the logistics, the chosen neighborhoods play a role in Chicago’s growth.
“Each of these five communities has a distinct cultural character, a distinct history, and something that also speaks to the larger Chicago story,” Fojtik said.
The series intends to challenge a narrative. As the show explains, segregation in Chicago led to inequality, socioeconomic diversity, and isolation of communities. While still contributing to pressing challenges across the city, Chicago’s history shouldn’t be ignored.
“Things that cause us to have lots of problems actually are also the same things that give us so many wonderful, rich experiences you can only get in Chicago,” Fojtik said.
Spreading the word
Choose Chicago posted the episodes online, but the group is also hosting community screenings around the city. Viewers can enjoy the same bites as seen on the big screen.
Fojtik said Choose Chicago also started a paid ad campaign to get more eyes on the show.
Through its promotional efforts, Choose Chicago targets a range of audiences, starting with Chicago residents themselves.
“We can hop on the CTA, or cars or a bike or whatever, and get to other communities pretty easily,” Fojtik told Skift. Choose Chicago also considers the regional and national levels with its campaigns, hoping to identify affinity groups and niches that would enjoy these travel experiences. More broadly, Fojtik emphasized the prominence of the “cultural explorer,” or a tourist interested in getting to know all aspects of a city.
Empowering communities
Beyond showing travelers other corners of Chicago, neighborhood campaigns have the potential to empower communities themselves.
Mike Moreno runs Osito’s Tap, a featured Little Village bar with a Bohemian history and a Latin twist. While Osito’s has already been in the press, Moreno said there’s been such an uptick in customers that he needs to hire more staff.
“My bar has been slammed for the last couple of weeks, which is amazing,” Moreno said. “(The series) brings attention to a neighborhood that I love so much that a lot of people aren’t familiar with.”
Fojtik sees the series as a chance for communities to speak out for themselves.
“These were opportunities to really amplify and highlight those community voices and perspectives,” Fojtik said. “I think it gave a lot of folks who participated in it an opportunity to have their voices heard.”
