map

Arrive in Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital, which lies only a fraction below the Arctic Circle and receives just four hours of sunlight in winter and 22 in summer. Have a guided overview of the Old Town, including Hallgrimskirkja Cathedral with its 210-foot tower, and perhaps shed some light on Nordic culture at the National Museum, with its Viking treasures and artifacts, and unusual whalebone carvings on display.

Day 2: Flatey Island/Látrabjarg

The ship navigates Iceland’s wild western frontier, sailing past the immense Latrabjarg cliffs, the westernmost point of Iceland and home to a huge population of razorbills. The cliffs are an area once famous for egg collecting; the men were tied to ropes and lowered like spiders down onto the ledges. Continue to Flatey Island, a trading post for many centuries, for walks around the charming little hamlet that grew here, and take a Zodiac cruise along the coast.

Day 3: Exploring Northwestern Iceland

Explore the beautiful and peaceful Westfjords region of Iceland. Perhaps take a hike to a remote waterfall or a Zodiac cruise alongside bird-covered cliffs. Enter Ísafjarðardjúp and land at Vigur Island to visit the Eider Farm and view the down cleaning process.

Day 4: Ísafjördur

Located in the Westfjords, Ísafjördur is surrounded by water on three sides, sculpted by glaciers. Explore by Zodiac and hike ashore to view the local landscape and photograph flowering plants.

Day 5: Siglufjördur and Akureyri

Siglufjördur was the center of Iceland’s once-thriving herring industry. We stop by the Herring Museum for a re-enactment and a tasting. Continue to picturesque Akureyri, backed by snow-capped mountains. Explore the old town, with its beautifully maintained period houses, or visit the botanical garden.

Day 6: Lake Mývatn and Húsavík

Begin the day by visiting an unforgettable sight: Godafoss, the waterfall of the gods. Next, drive to Mývatn, the most geologically active area in Iceland. This is world-class field geology! See the bizarre mud pools at Hverarönd — so hot they actually bubble. At the Krafla geothermal area see the explosion crater at Viti. After lunch ashore, meet the ship in Húsavík, and watch for whales as we sail north to the land of the midnight sun. Take Zodiacs ashore to the tiny island of Grimsey, which lies exactly on the Arctic Circle. Here we celebrate being officially in the Arctic, in the company of nesting arctic terns, fulmars, and puffins in burrows, all bathing, courting and fishing — another wonderful photo op.

With plenty of rarely-visited coastline, this day is left open to explore Iceland's rugged east coast. Perhaps join our naturalists for a hike along a stretch of the Langanes Peninsula or we may have a Zodiac cruise to view the beautiful stacks near Raudanes. We will keep it flexible to be able to choose the best option for the day.

Day 8: Djúpivogur

Dock in Djúpivogur to explore the vast Vatnajökull icecap. Via small boat, get up-close and personal with the deep blue icebergs of the large ice lagoon of Jökulsárlón.

Day 9: Islands of Heimaey & Surtsey, Westman Islands

The Westman Islands were formed by undersea volcanoes between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago and are among the youngest of the world’s archipelagos. In 1963, the world witnessed on film the birth of its newest island, Surtsey — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — which we see as we cruise past the coast. In 1973, Heimaey was threatened by lava flows that nearly closed off its harbor. We visit the crater, where the earth is still hot, and have amazing views of areas that had been engulfed by lava.

Day 10: Disembark in Reykjavik

Today we complete our circumnavigation of Iceland, disembarking in Reykjavík. Choose to visit the famous Blue Lagoon thermal baths or enjoy the hotsprings, geothermal power plant and horse farm prior to flights home.

Didn't you start 3 other G-Adventures threads yesterday?

Can you explain how this is different? A link to the itinerary would help folks analyze this for you

Yes, I did start those threads yesterday but this is different because it is a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC JOURNEYS version with G-Adventures. I am just looking for someone who DID this trip b/c I want to know what "visits" and "expert talks" really means. Not sure that providing the itinerary would explain that. Thank you!

It focuses on the Southern Portion so hopefully less travel time.

But still wondering how much "expert" time there is vs. activities.

https://www.gadventures.com/trips/explore-iceland/ELING/

Maybe check out GJ Travel and Arctic Adventures. I know their guided ring road tours include some hikes and activities:

Train Trips - Travel was revolutionized with the implementation of the railroad, allowing people to travel in what was then a rapid pace from destination to destination. Today this ideal has been flipped on its head, and train travel is a leisurely paced excursion allowing time to relax and appreciate the slower meandering through beautiful countrysides. National Geographic train trips cover the classics, such as the Trans-Siberian railway and the Rocky Mountain railroad. Accommodations are comfortable, around a premium level, with options to upgrade.

Active Expeditions - For those who enjoy a bit more of an adrenaline pumping and active travel experience, National Geographic also has trips for you. These trips feature multiple active outings, such as kayaking, hiking, and caving. Expect to explore the outdoors covering unique natural phenomena and gaining insight into how and why the landscape has been shaped the way it has. These trips also feature cultural insights, just to a lesser extent.

Family Expeditions - National Geographic is the perfect company to travel with when you have curious and adventurous youngsters eager to see the world. They will learn about other cultures, people, food, nature and wildlife from experts with “cool jobs” that might even inspire lifelong interests and perhaps influence a career. These trips are specifically designed to be hands on, allowing everyone to get involved and learn about how things work.

Private Jet Trips - For a luxurious and more lengthy travel experience, nothing beats a Private Jet tour. A dedicated team will be with you, and you’ll experience all the best that National Geographic has to offer from local guides to premiere accommodation. These trips are in a very high budget range, but if it’s in your wheelhouse - it’s a superb way to travel and cover a lot of ground.

Journeys - Part of a partnership with G Adventures, these trips are adventurous and immersive small group excursions imbued with the spirit of National Geographic. The best of two top travel worlds!

Since its founding in 1888, the Society has developed incredible resources—from its network of experts, contacts, and Society-sponsored researchers all over the globe, to the top-tier editorial staff of National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler magazines, and the books, maps, and film and television divisions. Students in our community service programs live in a village and work with community members on a variety of service projects. On each expedition and field workshop, students get involved in a unique, hands-on project that allows them to delve deeper into a specific topic—such as photography, wildlife and conservation, filmmaking, or archaeology—and further engage with the places they visit.

Meet your fellow middle school student travelers and one or more of your leaders in New York, and fly together to Reykjavík, Iceland.

Begin your journey with a dip in Iceland’s most famous geothermal pool, the Blue Lagoon, followed by an orientation walk through Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital and home to nearly one quarter of the country’s population. Learn photography techniques, and begin practicing your new skills by taking photos of the futuristic, glass-walled Harpa concert hall and the colorful houses that line the city streets. Experience interactive science exhibits at the Perlan or explore the ruins of a Viking household excavated beneath the city streets at the Settlement Exhibition.

  • Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Travel north of the city, and hike through a wild canyon to a stunning viewpoint of one of Iceland’s highest waterfalls. Visit a dairy farm and try traditional ice cream made from skyr, a thick and creamy Icelandic yogurt, before continuing on to our base on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This rugged peninsula holds many of the incredible geological features found throughout the rest of the country, including lava fields and black-sand beaches, and a glacial ice cap that crowns a volcano. Over the next several days, explore the wonders of Snæfellsnes. Ride an Icelandic horse at the base of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, visit the picturesque harbor at Stykkishólmur, and join a local storyteller for a hike among cairns—or stacked stone formations—which mark the routes of ancient Viking paths.

  • The Golden Circle

Discover the iconic Golden Circle and use your camera to create a time-lapse film of the thundering Gullfoss waterfall, walk between two tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park, and witness boiling water shooting more than 200 feet in the air at the Geysir geothermal field. Visit a modern geothermal plant that provides much of Reykjavík’s energy and see firsthand why Iceland is a renewable energy leader, then soak in some of the area’s natural hot-spring pools.

  • Vík & the Southern Coast

Continue to the southern coast to hike behind the stunning falls at Seljalandsfoss, and listen to local legends of Viking gold buried beneath the thundering cascades of Skógafoss. Our home base here is Vík, a small coastal town and our jumping-off point for a trek atop the Sólheimajökull glacier. Don crampons, wield ice picks, and learn how glacial morphology has molded the landscape of the region. Witness the impacts of climate change firsthand while examining evidence of the glacier’s recession alongside experienced local guides.

Return to Reykjavík for the final night of your journey, and celebrate your adventure with your new friends before flying home.

Fly from Reykjavík, Iceland, to New York with your group and a leader, then continue on to your final destination.

A Day in the Life: Vík

Due to the traveling nature of this student program abroad, each day is different. Here is a snapshot of a day in Vik.

  • 8am  Enjoy a traditional breakfast at our accommodations
  • 10am  Join professional glacier guides and trek across the ice of Sólheimajökull
  • 12:30pm  Enjoy a picnic spread with your group on the edge of the glacier
  • 2pm  Stroll along Vik’s seafront and photograph sweeping oceans views
  • 5pm  Journal, read, or play a pickup game of frisbee
  • 6:30pm Cook dinner with your group or eat out at a local café
  • 8pm Group meeting to discuss the day’s highlights and plan for tomorrow

What to Expect

  • Program Themes

Explore both of these themes over the course of the program. Photography: Practice new photography skills—from framing landscapes to taking portraits—and tell the story of your expedition through your pictures. Photograph volcanoes and rushing waterfalls, and capture shots of your friends riding Icelandic horses or trekking across a glacier. Climate & Geology: Witness the impacts of climate change firsthand as you trek across the Sólheimajökull glacier. Learn about Iceland’s tectonic activity at a volcanology museum, and hear how local people are harnessing the power of the energy produced by the country’s geothermal landscapes.

  • Physical Activity

This is a physically active summer travel program that includes hiking and glacier trekking. Life in Iceland is best experienced outdoors, and you will be moving about often throughout the program—there’s so much to see! You do not need to have previous outdoor experience to participate, but it is important that you have a desire to be physically active, and that you are interested in trying all activities.

We stay in comfortable family-run guesthouses, hostels, and small hotels throughout our time in Iceland.

The group mixes picnics with dining out in Icelandic restaurants, along with traditional family-style dinners taken at our accommodations.

Please call our office with any questions about the physical nature of this program or to discuss specific accessibility and accommodation questions.

Destination

Located just below the Arctic Circle, Iceland is known for its glaciers, lava fields, geothermal pools, black-sand beaches, fjords, towering plateaus, active volcanoes, and remnants of intense glaciation from the last ice age. The national population is approximately 360,000, and the capital and cultural hub of Reykjavík on the island’s southwest coast is home to one in four Icelandic citizens. Iceland’s perimeter is dotted with picturesque towns and villages that are connected by a ring road that is popular with travelers.

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland; however, English is widely spoken throughout the country. A descendent of ancient Norse, Icelandic is considered one of the oldest living languages in the world, and has changed very little since it was spoken by the island’s original Nordic settlers.

We visit Iceland during their summer. The weather is cool with occasional rain showers. Daytime temperatures range from 50-60°F/10-15.5°C, while nighttime temperatures range from 45-50°F/7-10°C. Occasionally days will be warmer and temperatures will reach to 70°F/21°C.

We begin each day with a traditional breakfast of skyr, or rich Icelandic yogurt, and granola or oatmeal, fresh fruit, and cheeses. Fresh fish, grass-fed lamb, potatoes, root vegetables, and hearty soups with bread comprise typical Icelandic lunches and dinners.

Eclipse Day Viewing Prospects from Scoresbysund, Greenland By TravelQuest Eclipse Meteorologist Jay Anderson

Every now and then, Nature gives us a hidden spot where the weather and clouds seem to melt away, making a sunny oasis in the midst of a gray overcast. Coleridge called such a place Xanadu, and the 2026 eclipse has its own Xanadu in the fjords of Greenland. As the eclipse shadow crosses Greenland from the north, it reaches Scoresbysund, a deep fjord (the world’s largest) that stretches all the way to the island’s center line and beyond. Air flowing down from the Greenland Ice Cap into the sound dries and warms, forming an unusually sunny microclimate. Satellite observations from August 12 in past years show a better than 70 percent chance of seeing the eclipse from the fjord – among the best prospects along the whole of the eclipse track, in a spectacular Greenland landscape.

In the afternoon, we board National Geographic Endurance, our floating home base for the next 12 days, and set a course for Iceland’s Westfjords.

DATE(S): TBD

MEALS: Lunch / Dinner

DAY 2 – Westfjords of Iceland

As we explore Iceland’s rugged western coast, you have many options for immersing yourself in the stunning scenery, whether paddling a deep fjord in a sea kayak, hiking inland to a remote waterfall or spotting wildlife from a Zodiac speeding across a sheltered bay.

MEALS: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

DAY 3 – Crossing the Denmark Strait

national geographic tour iceland

Today we sail across the Denmark Strait, with luck encountering icebergs carried southward by the East Greenland Current. Relax and enjoy the passing views, along with enriching presentations from our onboard historians, naturalists, and photographers!

DAYS 4–9 – Exploring Northeast Greenland / Scoresbysund Total Solar Eclipse

national geographic tour iceland

As our ship reaches Greenland, we head well up the fjord-lined coast of Northeast Greenland National Park, the largest in the world, which protects 972,000 sq km (375,000 sq mi) of pristine wilderness. Our exact route will be dictated by weather and ice conditions. The Greenland ice sheet, which covers about 80 percent of this vast island (an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark) will have retreated considerably by the end of summer, giving us access to some of the countless bays and inlets that cut into its beautifully untouched shoreline. As we explore, there should be opportunities to spot Arctic wildlife, including seals, whales and polar bears.

Sailing back down past the park’s southern boundary, we head into Scoresbysund, the largest and longest fjord system on Earth, which offers more stunning vistas with each passing mile – and from every railing and window on the ship. Then on August 12, the captain, coordinating with our TravelQuest eclipse astronomer, will seek out the very best position for watching the Moon’s shadow pass over the fjord in a total eclipse of the Sun.

DAYS 10–11 – Crossing the Denmark Strait / Exploring the Westfjords, Iceland

national geographic tour iceland

As we sail back across the Denmark Strait, on a bearing just south of the Arctic Circle, we return once again to the cliff-lined coast of Iceland’s Westfjords. In Ísafjörður, the region’s largest town, you can walk around the natural harbor ringed by low mountains, admiring timber-framed houses dating back to the 1700s. There are also good chances to enjoy traditional Icelandic cuisine — much of it naturally focused on seafood, as fishing has been the main livelihood of this remote area, and indeed all of Iceland, for generations. Tonight we toast the end of a great adventure, extraordinary memories, and new friendships at our farewell meal.

DAY 12 – Reykjavik, Iceland / Disembark /Home

national geographic tour iceland

As we sail back into Reykjavík, you have three choices after disembarking: transfer to the airport for your flight homeward (or on to further adventures); extend your stay in Reykjavík and explore on your own; or take advantage of our options to  visit either Iceland’s famed Blue Lagoon thermal baths or the Reykjanes Peninsula to view the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, prior to your flight home.

DATE(S): TDB

MEALS: Breakfast / Lunch

ACCOMMODATION: N/A

Moderate: Both short and long walks over uneven hilly terrain – in easygoing to rugged conditions, passing through wet, muddy and snowy environments at varying elevations. It’s possible we may encounter rugged conditions at sea. At TravelQuest, we want to be sure you find the trip that best suits your interests and level of fitness. Please email or call if you have any questions regarding the requirements of this program.

National Geographic Endurance

Cabins & suites.

The National Geographic Endurance (debuting in July 2021) is a next-generation expedition ship, purpose-built for polar navigation. As a fully stabilized, highly strengthened, ice-class Polar Code PC5 (Category A) vessel, it is designed to navigate polar passages year-round, and safely explore unchartered waters, while providing exceptional comfort. Its patented X-BOW® is key to its design; its powerful wave-slicing action provides an extremely smooth ride in even adverse conditions, and reduces spray on deck, for superior observation. Food served aboard is fresh, local, delicious, and sourced from suppliers who share our values of sustainable use whenever possible. Meals aboard are almost always served in the dining room, located aft of the lounge deck. When weather conditions allow, lighter fare may be served on the observation deck. There is no assigned seating and our dining room accommodates the entire expedition community. During meals, your expedition leader, naturalists, and any guest speakers aboard will join you.

The ship features two restaurants, featuring local, sustainable choices and open seating for flexible, inclusive dining: plus, a Chef’s table for intimate, small group dining. The main restaurant has 270º views, and the Observation deck restaurant features lighter, made-to-order fare.

Public Areas

Public areas include an Observation Lounge with bar, gym, Wellness area, infinity-style outdoor hot tubs, library, main lounge with full-service bar, 24-hour beverage station, state-of-the-art facilities for films, slideshows and presentations, and a photo workshop area; plus, an expedition base with lockers for expedition gear, and an “open bridge” for access to our captain, officers and the art of navigation. The vessel is staffed by our wellness specialists and features a glass-enclosed yoga studio, gym, treatment rooms and spa relaxation area, and high- and low-heat saunas with ocean views.

Electronic charts

An electronic chart showing the ship’s location, course, and speed is almost always on display in the lounge.

Open bridge

You’ll find our captains are engaged, knowledgeable members of your expedition who are eager to share their passion with you. National Geographic Endurance’s open bridge features comfortable spaces to sit, enjoy the view, drink your morning coffee, or simply chat with the officers.

National Geographic Endurance’s Tools for Exploration

national geographic tour iceland

Expedition Landing Craft

Key to our operation is our fleet of expedition landing craft, which we use to land in places that would otherwise be inaccessible. With 14 of these boats and two loading stations used every time we disembark, we’re able to transfer guests off the ship quickly, so you can be out on adventures, not idly waiting. The expedition landing craft we use are 19 feet long, powered by four-stroke outboard engines, and are capable of comfortably carrying 10-12 people. They are widely recognized as the safest and most versatile small boats afloat.

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)

Capable of reaching 1,000 feet, far beyond the range of any Scuba diver, the ROV allows you to literally view parts of the undersea that are as unexplored as the Moon. Chances are, you, like many of our guests, will be struck by how surprisingly colorful undersea life is in these unlikely places. This glimpse may fundamentally change how you view the ocean!

National Geographic Endurance will be equipped with a fleet of kayaks large enough to ensure everyone who wants to can paddle at every opportunity, conditions permitting. Prior kayaking experience isn’t necessary—many of our guests have their first kayaking experience in extraordinary locations. Our custom-designed floating platform lets us deploy kayaks from the ship, or any location we want—including far from shore. Kayakers are usually free to explore where they want within boundaries set by the undersea specialist and officer of the watch.

Underwater camera

Our undersea specialist will dive often during your expedition, even in the polar regions, with cold-water gear, to shoot high-definition, Cousteau-like footage of the deep. Colorful nudibranchs, swimming, plant-like crinoids, and mysterious fish with antifreeze blood that thrive in the frigid sea will give you an entirely new appreciation of the marine environment.

Video microscope

Naturalists will use the video microscope to help explain all elements of the environment, including tiny organisms that are the building block of the marine ecosystem. Spellbinding live views of krill at 80x magnification populate the high-definition screens in the lounge with vivid detail and fills every onlooker with a sense of wonder at the importance of otherwise unobservable creatures.

This underwater microphone is deployed to listen to the vocalizations of marine mammals. Real time transmissions of their eerie, haunting sounds can be broadcast or recorded for later playback. Few experiences in nature are as captivating as watching humpback whales feed close to the ship as their vocalizations play through the ship’s PA system.
