Vienna River Cruise Guide: A Warning, And 6 Best Boat Trips

April 2024    Vienna River Cruise : Much like choosing a restaurant, cruising the Vienna Danube opens up a confusing choice. Do you prefer lush scenery over contemporary architecture? Enjoy the thrill of high speed transport or rather an elegant cruise ship, or chilling in a tiny ‘Zille’? One thing is for sure: You need to be selective to enjoy a boat ride on Donau.

Why Not All Vienna River Cruises Tick The Box

Contrary to Johann Strauss’s Danube waltz and most boat tour operators, the Danube river in Vienna isn’t always as scenic as you may expect, let alone of blue color. Unlike in Budapest, the Danube does not cross the city center. Instead, it separates the 2nd district Leopoldstadt from the 21st district of Floridsdorf. This means that a city cruise on the Danube usually introduces guests to the industrial charms of Handelskai in Leopoldstadt, and the contemporary high-rise buildings of Donau City on the Floridsdorf side. Hence, most city cruises include the more central Danube Canal, which highlights more landmarks. If you consider a Vienna river cruise, just adapt your expectations and go for a short evening cruise with soft light.

If you ask me, the best location for a truly scenic Danube river tour is UNESCO World Heritage site Wachau Valley. A top alternative is to travel to Bratislava, where you can choose between a majestic Danube cruise along the whole Vienna stretch to Bratislava, and an exciting high speed catamaran whizz. Here is my boiled down guide to the best boat trips on the Donau.

1. City Evening Cruise

Boat Trips: UN Headquarters, Vienna Danube

Along the Danube canal, Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s Kunsthaus adds fun, and the most relaxing sites are the Prater woodlands and Danube Island. Do also watch out for Otto Wagner’s modernist Schützenhaus, and the Zaha Hadid-designed university library. On top, you’ll get to try the Otto-Wagner designed lock at Nussdorf!

2. Private Yacht Trip On The Danube

Far from the experience of a large cruise ship, this 3-hour yacht ride connects you more deeply with the surroundings of the Danube. At a pier in the 19th district you’ll step aboard. As you glide along the river, you’ll navigate the historical Nussdorf lock and enter the Danube canal, until you reach Schwedenplatz in the heart of the city. During the standard three-hour tour your round trip on the Vienna Danube and the Danube Canal will cover all the key sights. Perfect for a group of up to 7 people you can book this ride for a minimum of three and up to six hours. Read more.

3. Electric Sofa Boat On The Old Danube

Vienna boat tour: Meine Insel sofa boat

Not only are these electric boats quiet and sustainable their quirky designs and large sofas make them extremely comfortable, and an easy platform to take a plunge into the waters on a hot summer day. Read my review.

4. Kayaking On The Old Danube

Boat trips: Kayaking Vienna Danube

One of the best ways to experience the Old Danube along with tiny Gänsehäufel island, a lake shore café and the weekend log cabins of local residents is kayaking. During this private tour your certified open-water lifeguard will take you to the best spots. Between May and September the water is perfect for a swim, so do take your swimsuits with you. Find out more.

5. Wachau boat trip

Boat trips: Wachau ship

6. Quick Vienna To Bratislava Boat Ride

Boat trips: Catamaran to Bratislava

Definitely, we found we had more than enough time in Bratislava to do sightseeing. Read my story about our catamaran ride and mini danube cruise .

Vienna to Budapest

Note: The Vienna river cruise hydrofoil service has been suspended. There is a six hour Danube cruise   that takes you from Vienna to Budapest and back on a high speed hydrofoil. This is the fastest of all boat trips between the two cities. It is a good option for people who want a day cruise on the Danube and visit Budapest. Added benefit: You are free to explore both cities at your own speed and taste. Go here for a review and more information on the  hydrofoil Vienna – Budapest .

About The Danube River

Boat Trips: Danube seen from Donauturm

In Vienna, the Danube was regulated in the 1870ies to prevent Austria’s capital from being flooded. The original Danube bed was transformed into the Old Danube (Alte Donau), now a lake. South of it, the new Danube river bed was created. The long and narrow Danube Island (Donauinsel) separates the Danube from the New Danube (Neue Donau). Explore the best places on the Wiener Donau in my Vienna Danube insider guide.

  • 895SueM 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Nothing to see on an evening cruise Unlike cruising on the Thames in London or the Seine in Paris, we have learned that the Danube doesn’t go through the actual city of Vienna, so there’s absolutely nothing to see through the windows on an evening cruise. The buffet meal however was plentiful and very good and the drinks prices reasonable. The waiting staff were very pleasant. Unfortunately however, the ‘entertainment’ consisted of a three person group who mostly massacred popular English songs. The female lead singer in particular had a very grating voice which ruined many of the songs that she attempted. Okay to dance to after a few drinks, but not so great to sit and listen to! Overall a pleasant evening but very disappointing not to see Vienna lit up at night, just stark blackness. Not the best choice for a winter evening. Read more Written November 11, 2023
  • Edward R 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to enjoy the Danube We spent five hours on the comfortable, if not the newest, boat. Fantastic scenery floated by while we enjoyed breakfast and coffee. The food is good and the service team is very attentive. Short information about the sailing places in German and English was just right. No music or excessive noise. We were traveling in October and there were few passengers. The short stop in Melk is just enough to go ashore for a while. And the magnificent monastery can only be seen from the water, so consider this not a sightseeing tour, but a relaxing one. We would like to repeat this trip in the spring. Read more Written October 25, 2023
  • Scenic15302679675 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Avoid at all costs Don’t book this cruise or any with this company. It was very disappointing and poor and we felt conned. We did the 90 minute Vienna River Cruise which turned out being 80 minutes of which only 20 is spent on the river. Almost 30 minutes is spent stationery between gates in a lock. The remaining part of the cruise is on the canal not the river passing graffiti and cars. You will see very little of Vienna from the boat on this cruise. In addition on this cruise you are not told that you get off the boat at a different place to where you get on it. It was a lovely sunny day but there are very few seats outside on deck and you can’t take drinks outside. It would perhaps be ok for 10 euros but for 25 euros it was awful. It is a different way to see some of the city that you might not see any other way. The boat was nice and staff was friendly. It is a nice boat ride with food and drink available to buy separately. Discovering Vienna Austria (On a Magnificent River Cruise)

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Vienna, Austria, on your Viking Danube Waltz river cruise. Nestled in the heart of the Central Alps, this small, but culturally rich country, boasts a luxurious atmosphere and a fascinating history.

Join me as I share how my friends and I spent a memorable day exploring this remarkable European city.

driving-through-vienna-austria

Touring Schönbrunn Palace

My friends and I had an unforgettable journey through Vienna, Austria, with Viking Cruises! We explored the breathtaking Schönbrunn Palace on our optional add-on tour.

We had a complimentary tour of Austria earlier with Viking in the daytime, and later chose to take an optional add-on tour that requires a nominal fee. The trip took us to Schönbrunn Palace, the most visited attraction in Vienna.

Our included tour started with a small-sized group led by a Viking guide . We drove around the Ringstrasse, which replaced the city walls hundreds of years ago, and saw the city’s highlights, stopping to take photos a few times.

Break for Refreshments

We had a bit of free time at the Palace, so my friends and I shopped at the outdoor markets on the grounds and then enjoyed a snack. At Conditorei Sluka Rathausplatz , we enjoyed picture-perfect apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce and little egg and tuna salad sandwiches with fresh tomatoes and herbs most delicious.

The coffee and hot chocolate were both tasty, too. The restaurant had some of the most beautiful desserts I’ve ever seen.

Hofburg Palace and Other Points of Interest

Experience the enchanting Spanish Riding School and witness the breathtaking beauty of the Lipizzaner Stallions at Vienna’s historic Hofburg Palace . These “dancing white horses” are a true sight to behold. Capture the moment with photos and even get up close to pet these majestic creatures. It was the highlight of my friend Julie’s cruise.

Afterward, explore the vibrant Kärntner Strasse, a renowned shopping street, as well as other iconic landmarks like Mozart’s house, the Opera House, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Wrap up the tour and head back to the ship for a delicious lunch.

A Truly Royal Residence: Schönbrunn Palace

For an even deeper dive into Vienna’s rich history, embark on the optional Schönbrunn Palace tour with Viking . Discover the fascinating Habsburg rule, which shaped Vienna for six centuries. This magnificent palace, often referred to as the “Versailles of Vienna,” holds countless stories, including the imprisonment of Richard the Lion Heart from 1192- 93 for insulting Leopold V.

Plus, uncover the intriguing connection between Schönbrunn Palace and the famous Marie Antoinette, the last Austrian Habsburg.

hofburg-palace-entrance

Fun Fact: Schönbrunn Palace is a stately picturesque castle with a royal resident, Maria Theresa. She had a famous daughter, the youngest of 16 children. This child was Marie Antoinette, more of a familiar name to us Americans, so I was glad to put two and two together in this exciting history lesson.

Touring the Magnificent Palace

The 1,441-room Rococo palace is one of the most fabulous homes I’ve ever toured and was deemed a  UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site  in 1996. Its interior has been preserved perfectly, and the audio-guided tour is informational and enjoyable.

I was in awe of the ceramics, wallpaper, intricate crown moldings, elegant seating arrangements with beautiful fabrics, and china.

hofburg-signage

Maybe I just imagined it, but the spectacular Vienna Austria palace seemed to twinkle everywhere you looked, from the polished gold accents and trim. To say it was breathtaking would be an understatement.

Schönbrunn Palace: A Famous UNESCO World Heritage Site

If you’re exploring Vienna independently, don’t miss the 60-minute Grand Tour of Schönbrunn Palace . Marvel at 40 stunning rooms, as well as the meticulously manicured formal gardens, Roman ruins, and captivating Grecian statuary.

And while you’re there, make sure to visit Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the world’s oldest zoo and another UNESCO World Heritage site. Get up close to incredible animals like elephants, Giant pandas, orangutans, and anteaters.

After your adventure in and around Schönbrunn Palace, take some time to explore the local arts and crafts, indulge in delicious food, and sip on refreshing drinks at the charming kiosks set up outside. Don’t forget to pick up some unique souvenirs to commemorate your trip.

A Crazy Cab Ride: Buckle Up

My friends and I are fondue lovers, and we wanted to experience it in Vienna. I found Chamäleon, the sole fondue restaurant in town, online. Our adventure began as we hailed a taxi driver. There was a language barrier, as our cab driver couldn’t speak English. Thankfully, we communicated through a web page with the restaurant’s address.

As we journeyed through the city in a luxurious car, we passed vibrant neighborhoods and exclusive areas. After what seemed like 30 minutes, the streets became quieter and more secluded.

Finally, our driver stopped at a dead-end cul-de-sac, pointing down a dimly lit alley. We had arrived at our destination – Chamäleon Restaurant and Bar . As we entered, curious glances turned towards us – American tourists in a local hotspot. However, when we requested a table, we were initially told they were fully booked, despite several empty tables.

Fortunately, the owner intervened and graciously led us to a table. We were given an hour to enjoy our meal, as the remaining tables were already reserved.

A Fondue Episode to Remember

As we quickly reviewed the menu at Chamäleon, we excitedly tried to order various items from our waiter, who also happened to be the owner. However, much to our disappointment, he kindly declined our requests.

Eventually, we settled for the only fondue dish he offered, which only came with chunks of bread. I attempted to order raw vegetables, but unfortunately, that was not an option.

When the dish we were allowed to order finally arrived at our table, we were astounded by the sight of an enormous bowl filled with approximately 6 to 8 pounds of melted cheese. It was a sight that made our eyes almost pop out of our heads.

The bread baskets alone were so abundant that they would have been enough to serve 100 guests at a party!

With our appetites whetted, Angie was not a fan of the strong Kirsch taste in the fondue, leaving Jo and me to thoroughly enjoy the indulgent combination of cheese and bread.

When we could no longer fit another bite, we requested to take the leftovers back to the boat. To our surprise, the waiter returned with an empty food container resembling an empty Parkay package, in which we placed the leftover cheese. As for the bread, we had to make do with a plastic grocery store bag to hold it.

Our check arrived, and our bill was equivalent to $80. We nearly fell over! It sure was a fun experience, but we definitely got taken advantage of. Still, it was an entertaining evening and a great story to tell back on the boat.

Viking Cruises to the Rescue

For those of you wondering, we asked the Chef aboard the  Viking River Cruises  ship to heat our cheese for us. So, the next night, as we sailed under the amazing bridges of Budapest, he surprised us with it.

Our fondue was beautifully plated and surrounded with vegetables and our bread for dipping. We were happy to share it with the other cruisers that were in the lounge with us.

All in all, the fondue was a hit and worth every penny.

Happy Country #41 to Me!

Austria was an incredible country to visit, and it marked the 41st country I have been fortunate to explore. It has a stunning metropolitan city, talented artists, renowned music composers, a rich history, and mouthwatering fondue. The architectural beauty of Austria truly amazed me, and I could easily have spent hours taking pictures of its breathtaking buildings.

I highly recommend adding Austria to your travel bucket list. It offers a unique experience, just like the one we had. Have a wonderful and safe journey.

ARRIVAL IN BUDAPEST

You fly to Budapest, where a coach takes you to your cruise ship. The dedicated crew are there to welcome you on board, ensuring you settle in and familiarise yourself with this first-class floating hotel. There’s always a sense of expectancy and excitement on the eve of a cruise and, after an excellent dinner in the stylish restaurant, conversation is sure to revolve around the delights ahead.

Route map - not including the extension

Overnight we have cruised upstream to Esztergom, one of Hungary’s oldest towns, a royal capital during medieval times and today the seat of the country’s archbishop. We have a guided tour of the famous neoclassical basilica, standing sentinel over the Danube on the border with Slovakia, and boasting one of the world’s largest altarpieces and a wealth of priceless religious artefacts. The castle is also worth exploring; it was the seat of government until the Ottomans invaded in the 16th century.

Nestling below are myriad atmospheric churches resonating with the enchanting sounds of choir; this is the best of provincial Hungary and is little changed since Habsburg times. As you enjoy your first lunch on board we gently leave Esztergom in our wake, affording a fascinating opportunity to compare the different landscapes, towns and villages of Hungary on one river bank and of Slovakia on the other.

This morning we explore Slovakia’s fast-emerging capital city, Bratislava, on a guided tour. Until recently swathed in the drab uniformity of Communism, the city has rekindled the splendour of its imperial past in its beautifully restored Old Town. Equally impressive is the imposing 17th-century castle commanding expansive views across the Danube.

This afternoon we cruise into Lower Austria, a peaceful, bucolic region and home to some of the country’s best wines. By now the stresses of everyday life seem distant as you absorb the ever-changing scenes we pass: children playing on the river banks, young couples strolling arm in arm like generations before them, vignerons carefully pruning their vines, and cobbled quaysides lined by half-timbered buildings.

You’ll marvel as the Captain skilfully navigates the ship along the serene river and through locks whose mechanisms never cease to fascinate, as we cruise towards Dürnstei

DÜRNSTEIN & MELK

Durnstein is known principally for the ice-blue tower of its abbey, which dominates the view, and the castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192 after being shipwrecked on his return from the crusades. This morning we take a guided walking tour to explore this memorable city further. Set on a rocky outcrop high above the river, the castle is now ruined, but it’s easy to imagine England’s legendary monarch seething with frustration far from home, while waiting for his family to raise funds to pay his ransom.

After lunch you visit the remarkable Melk Abbey. Nothing quite prepares you for your first sight of this enormous honey-coloured building, standing resplendent above the surrounding countryside. Originally a castle, it was gifted to the Benedictine Order in the 11th-century and, although reconstructed in Baroque style during the 18th century, it has remained a monastic school and monastery ever since. The Abbey is renowned for its 214-yard-long Emperor’s Gallery lined with portraits, many fine rooms and an ornate library. After we re-join the ship, dinner is served during the final part of our cruise upstream through the pretty Nibelungengau, immortalised in the music of Wagner.

city river cruise vienna

SALZBURG OR LINZ

Reaching Linz, you will have the choice to stay in the city and take a guided walking tour, exploring its charming baroque old town. At its heart you’ll see one of the finest squares in Austria, lined by grand pastel-coloured facades with an impressive central Trinity Column of white marble, crowned by a gilded sunburst. There’s also the fortress-like castle, built high above the city by Emperor Friedrich III, now a museum housing a fine collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century artworks.

Alternatively, we drive to Salzburg, once an independent state whose archbishops turned it into one of the most sophisticated cities north of the Alps. Dominating the skyline is one of Europe’s largest stone fortresses, the Hohensalzburg, while beneath its walls church domes and spires rise from the delightful Altstadt, or Old Town. Then there’s the wonderful Hellbrunn Palace and the splendid formal gardens of the Mirabell Palace – a must for horticulture fans.

This morning, discover some of the city’s main sights in the company of an expert local guide, then you’re free to explore as you wish. Everywhere there are sights associated with the city’s most famous resident, Mozart, who played the harpsichord aged three, composed rudimentary music at five and wrote his first opera when he was 11!

Please note lunch is not included on this full day excursion to Salzburg; however, the ship will offer a packed lunch. We return to the ship for another splendid dinner.

city river cruise vienna

For many, today’s visit to Vienna will be one of the highlights of the cruise. The city’s very name provokes images of elegance, fine music, wide boulevards, Baroque architecture and a rich tapestry of peoples who were drawn here from all corners of Europe. For 200 years until the First World War, Vienna was the cultural centre of Europe and many of the showpiece buildings, galleries, aristocratic palaces and magnificent churches you see today were built to reflect its imperial status. The city’s most iconic monument is the breathtaking Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, whose striking multi-coloured roof and huge Gothic South Tower dominate the skyline. There’s also the colossal Hofburg, the former royal court that is now home to a collection of museums, the Crown Jewels and the Spanish Riding School, and where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs. Then there are the lavish Imperial Apartments and an outstanding collection of relics of the Holy Roman Empire, including, allegedly, the sabre of Charlemagne himself. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, which contains the world’s fourth largest collection of paintings, is just across the road. This morning we have a tour with a local guide offering insights into why Vienna is one of Europe’s great capitals – the seat of the Habsburg emperors and home to some of the world’s finest classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and, of course, a whole family of Strausses.

During the afternoon you’re free to explore as you wish. Take a stroll in the Prater, notable for the huge Ferris wheel that features in several Cold War spy thrillers. Or, for something quite different, visit the Schönbrunn Palace, a former royal residence now housing a range of world-class museums and galleries. Perhaps, though, just take a stroll through Vienna’s atmospheric side streets, or enjoy a coffee and a slice of delicious Sachertorte in one of the lovely coffee houses.

This evening we’ve arranged truly the ‘icing on the cake’: You have the wonderful Captains Dinner and no visit to Vienna is complete without a live musical experience, so after dinner we have a classical recital on board. To hear this exquisite music played in the city of its creation makes a wonderful finale to the day.

city river cruise vienna

Enjoy a leisurely morning as we cruise majestically through Hungary’s peaceful pastoral landscape towards Budapest. After lunch we enjoy a sightseeing tour of this captivating city, which truly lives up to its reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Danube’. The twin cities of Buda, built around the hilltop fortress, and Pest, with its wide boulevards, were fought over through the centuries. The Ottomans ruled here for 150 years before being ousted in the late 17th century, but their legacy lives on in the many thermal baths fed by hot springs, giving rise to Budapest’s other sobriquet – the ‘City of Spas’. After the end of Ottoman rule, Budapest became an imperial city of the Habsburg Empire, attracting great cultural and commercial wealth. Castle Hill is Budapest in microcosm: two churches, seven museums and a theatre among streets and squares with their own special atmosphere and a dramatic view across the river to the awe-inspiring neo-Gothic Parliament Building. Budapest’s endless galleries, museums, outstanding Art Nouveau architecture and excellent shopping offer a fittingly elegant end to your Danube cruise.

This evening’s Gala Dinner closes with a Hungarian folklore show, giving you time to bid farewell to your travelling companions and reflect on all the inspirational places, sights and sounds you have experienced on a truly ‘imperial’ cruise.

NEUSIEDLERSEE

This morning, we'll disembark in Budapest and journey to Neusiedlersee. The region of Neusiedlersee, located on the border between Austria and Hungary, is home to a picturesque lake - the second-largest steppe lake in Europe. The lake is a haven for nature enthusiasts due to its reed beds and wetlands, which provide a habitat for a variety of wildlife. It is also a popular destination for those seeking adventure, as it offers activities like bird watching, sailing, and cycling. And wine enthusiasts will already know that the region is famous for its fruity red wines which you’re invited to sample today with a lunch and wine tasting at a local winery.

First, we visit the wine cellars and learn about wine production here. Then we enjoy authentic Austrian cuisine with specialities from the region to accompany the samples of a sophisticated range of fruity whites, strong reds and mouth-watering sweet wines.

After our wine tasting, we'll take off on a horse-drawn carriage ride in the Neusiedlersee region with a local guide. Feel the wind in your hair as we ride through the meadows and vineyards along its shore and experience the stunning natural beauty of the lake. The rhythmic clip-clop of the horses' hooves lull you into a serene sense of zen that’s unreachable at home, allowing you to simply relax and appreciate the enchanting surroundings. This traditional mode of transportation offers a unique and nostalgic experience and creates lasting memories of this enchanting region.

We'll arrive in Vienna this afternoon and settle into our centrally located hotel, where we stay for three nights.

SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE

We'll explore Schönbrunn Palace - the most popular sight in Vienna. Experience the opulence of the Habsburg dynasty and explore the stunning architecture, richly furnished rooms and expansive garden of this UNESCO World Heritage site. While the palace was commissioned in the 17th century by Emperor Leopold I, it was Empress Marie Theresa who transformed it into the Palace we see today.

On the imperial tour, we'll see the grandeur of Austria's imperial history, walking in the footsteps of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Joseph. Adorned with exquisite furniture, elaborate chandeliers, and intricate wall hangings, these rooms offer a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyle of the Habsburg dynasty. Discover the extravagant grandeur of the Great Gallery, the exotic influences of the 'Chinese Cabinets', and the impressive Hall of Ceremonies.

After our tour, explore the palace and grounds at your leisure. Animal lovers should head to the Tiergarten Schönbrunn - the oldest zoo in the world - located within the palace grounds. Here you'll get to see a diverse range of animal species and learn about the conservation efforts being made. Or take a stroll through the meticulously landscaped gardens adorned with fountains, statues and flower beds. Climb the hill to the Gloriette, a striking structure perched at the top of the palace gardens with panoramic views of Vienna and the palace ground. Or head to the nearby Schönbrunn Palace Children's Museum to learn about the everyday lives of the imperial children through interactive exhibits.

The rest of the afternoon and evening will be at leisure in Vienna.

We know that for Riviera Travel guests it’s not enough to see the city, you want to experience it – and what better way to experience Vienna than through the music it’s famous for. Tonight, you can choose to spend the evening in one of the most opulent buildings in the city with an additional optional excursion to Kursalon Music Hall. Enjoy the essence of Vienna through the works by the city's most famous Classical composers - Mozart and Strauss.

Our tour of the architectural and cultural highlights of The Vienna State Opera includes its grand staircase, captivating oil paintings and tapestries inspired by Mozart's The Magic Flute.

After our tour, there's free time at leisure to explore the city. Perhaps take a tour of the Hofburg - once the imperial family's residence. Marvel at the impressive collection of drawings and master prints at the Albertina, one of the largest and most significant print collections in the world. Or visit the Burggarten, this leafy oasis is the perfect place to relax with lovely views of its palatial surroundings.

As you explore, you're likely to stumble on some of history's most famous works, like The Infanta paintings by Velazquez, and masterworks by Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer, Titian and Tintoretto.

Tonight, we'll enjoy a traditional Heurigen evening at a nearby restaurant, where we will be celebrating the latest wine production. You can experience the taste of this year's vintage with a wine tasting while relishing in the exquisite Viennese cuisine.

Best Things to Do in Vienna on a Danube River Cruise

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: October 1, 2022

When your Danube river cruise only gives you one day in Vienna, Austria, you have eight hours to find the best things to do, and of course, somewhere to eat.

Best things to do in Vienna include a visit to St. Francis of Assisi Church.

With only one day in Vienna, here are highlights to see.

Planning a  Danube river cruise  ? If it begins or ends in Vienna, definitely add a couple of overnights to experience this expansive, bustling city. But, if you only have one day in Vienna, here are my suggestions to experience as much as possible. This city is truly a magnificent jewel in the crown of European capital cities.

If your river cruise ship does not dock near the city center, they will usually provide a back and forth shuttle service. Sometimes it’s complimentary, depending upon the river cruise company. Your other option is to simply have Reception order a taxi to take you into town.

Even if your river ship is docked near the main area, it’s still a fairly long walk (3-4 miles) to the main area. Especially when you’ll be doing more walking once you get into the heart of Vienna.

Graben pedestrian zone.

The central shopping and dining area. Pension Nossek is located on the street to the left on a day in Vienna.

Shop til you drop. Walk til you can’t walk anymore. Within only a few blocks of this vehicle-free zone, you’ll find many of Vienna’s notable or historic landmarks. Stroll up and down the smaller side streets for some wonderful little cafes and boutiques. .

Schönbrunn Palace

It doesn't look crowded from this view, but there are lines inside. With one day in Vienna, buy your admission ticket online instead.

How to get there: By taxi or public transportation, it’s easy to find but far to walk whether or not you are going independently from your river cruise ship or staying overnight. Sometimes a taxi is your best option. You can also get to Schonbrunn Palace on the follow public transport:

Underground: U4, Schönbrunn station Trams: 10 and 58, Schönbrunn station Bus: 10A, Schönbrunn station

Dating from the middle ages as a monastery, magnificent Schönbrunn Palace   was the home to the imperial Habsburg family who really gave it the royal once-over. With the addition of palatial buildings and furnishings that began in the 1600’s, it was converted into a summer palace by Empress Elizabeth in the 1800’s,  Schönbrunn Palace stayed in the family until Emperor Franz Joseph died in 1916. Two years later the palace and other royal buildings were expropriated by the Austrian government.

The grounds are beautifully kept, including the immense and uber-fragrant Rose Garden. Pay a few euro and take the guided tour.

Once you’ve toured this spectacular palace, retrace your steps back to the center of the action inside the city.

Spanish Riding School

Once you have your ticket, head upstairs and find a place to stand while watching the horses practice.

We’ve all heard of the world famous “dancing” Lipizzaner horses…well this is where they reside. Walk over to Michaelerplatz, past the below-ground Roman ruins and enter through the archway. For twelve euro admission, on Tuesdays through Saturdays, you can watch these elegant, muscle-bound horses and their stoic trainers practice their routines in daily workouts.

The program begins at 10am; the same time that the tour buses are unloading and people are packing into the arena. By 11:30 most of the tour groups have suddenly vanished, seating closer to the ground level is available and the horses have already warmed up and moving in spectacular form. If you’re in the city for a couple of days, I’d suggest that you purchase your ticket the day before you intend to go and arrive just before 11am. An hour of watching the musical workout is enough time to soak in the ambiance and appreciate this traditional performance.

It is very exciting to watch as these incredible horses are led back to their stalls after practice.

Horse lover? If you’re quick and the timing is right, exit the arena and cross the street to the Stallburg building. The “wranglers” walk the horses back to their stalls from the arena after their workout. You can almost reach out and touch one of these magnificent animals.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

St. Stephens Catherdral towers over the city center. Very interesting tour inside, too. A must do for one day in Vienna.

You don’t have to be religious to be in awe of this red marble sepulchral which took nearly fifty years to build. Starting in 1359, the cornerstone was set in place by the ruling Habsburg (who else?) Duke Rudolph IV. Without a doubt, St. Stephen’s Cathedral is Austria’s most notable Gothic structure with a Romanesque style interior. Housed within and toured only with a guide, are hundred of important art treasures. If you need some exercise, climb the 343 stairs to the tower-keepers room. Check first though, as the cathedral in undergoing extensive exterior renovation.

The Natural History Museum

Be sure to see the 25,000 year old tiny statue of a woman, named Venus of Willendorf, found in the Wachau Valley.

Opened 1889, it was named the Imperial Natural History Museum and housed the Hapsburg’s immense collection of just about everything you can imagine, from gemstones to taxidermy to butterflies. Today the collection of over 25 million artifacts includes such irreplaceable items such at the 25,000 year old tiny statue of a woman, named Venus of Willendorf (found in the Wachau Valley) and a skeleton of the diplodocus dinosaur.

The Natural History Museum is one of the top 10 museums in the world. Open: Thursday – Monday 9am -6:30pm, Wednesday 9am – 9pm, closed Tuesday.

Taste the local cuisine.

While wandering around the central Graben area, be sure to sample the tidbits that are associated with Vienna; wiener schnitzel and sachertorte. While traditional wiener schnitzel is a piece of breaded and fried veal or pork cutlet, you may order it made with chicken instead. If you’ve been wandering around the Graben streets and get hungry, I’d recommend Restaurant Levante and Il Tempo Bistro, both on Wallenstrasse. Nothing fancy, a bit crowded at lunchtime with mostly locals, they both offer light and standard lunch fare at reasonable prices.

Want to dine with the locals? Stop in at either of these two restaurants for a taste of Vienna.

Sachertorte is probably the most famous of  the Viennese culinary specialties. A chocolate cake created in 1882 by Franz Sacher and was later perfected by Franz’s son, Eduard at the Demel bakery. Soon the nearby Hotel Sacher also served the Sachertorte.

Stop in for a slice of sachertorte at its official original home, Hotel Sacher.

The battle for claim to use the phrase, ” Original Sachertorte”  was finally settled in 1963 and now only the Hotel Sacher can claim title to the “Original Sachertorte.” Demel’s lays claim to a signature chocolate mark bearing the name of the Eduard Sacher, the inventor’s son who brought the cake to internation attention.

Take a spin on the Riesenrad ferris wheel.

Dating back from WWII, this is the oldest ferris wheel of its kind in use today.

Not for the weak at heart, this revolving attraction is located just outside of the city center and really not a convenient walking distance from the Graben zone. The ferris wheel is part of the Prater amusement area with beautiful walking paths, lagoons and picnic tables. Originally built in 1897 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Empereror Franz Joseph I, it was burned to the ground in WWII and rebuilt shortly thereafter. It is the oldest ferris wheel of its kind still in use today. If you try it, you are in for some of the most beautiful views of Vienna.

Rent a car or hop a train and head to Salzburg , Regensburg or Miltenberg.

Scenic view from atop Miltenberg Castle on the Main River.

Day-tripping from Vienna sends you to wonderful medieval towns, castles from the middle ages and alpine vistas with snow-capped peaks. Grab a train schedule or rent a car for a day, pick a direction and just go.

All river ships that ply the Danube stop in Vienna. Some have longer stays than others. If your river cruise visits for the day take advantage of their complimentary shore excursion in the morning and go out on your own in the afternoon.

Choose a Danube river cruise that includes Vienna and you’re in store for a fabulous experience in the Imperial City.

Great article Sherry! thanks for sharing this 🙂

Vienna is an incredible city and one of the reasons I fell in love with Austria in the first place.

The distinctive architecture is absolutely breathtaking.

Have you ever considered visiting alpine locations such as St. Anton or Seefeld?

Hi Douglas, Dockage in major cities may be determined as late as 2-3 weeks before arrival. However, Viking will let you know as soon as it is confirmed. You can log on to MyVikingJourney.com (you probably already have) and go to My Journey Details > Voyage Documents. If the docking space has been decided you’ll be able to scroll down in the online booklet and see the docking information printed. You or your travel agent can also call their reservations department and ask them about the docking. If you go to Google Earth, sometimes you can get an aerial view of the river ships along the bank.

Generally, docking in Vienna isn’t within a short walking distance to the city center and shuttle service will be provided. But maybe your ship will have a prime location. Have a memorable vacation!

We had a generally good experience. Most new passengers board in Engelhartszell, but 17 passengers boarded the ship in Vienna. We boarded in Vienna and didn’t receive new passenger orientation, which includes basic ship, safety and excursion presentations. The crew was very friendly, although it was primarily a German language oriented cruise lines.

The beautiful blue Danube (port-to-port cruise)

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise

Good accommodations, service, safety, excursions, and food overall. Our land tour leader in Prague, Jana, was very helpful, but I wasn’t aware that she would not be present on departure day 28 August. At least having her phone number would have been useful in case we had issues with transfers to the airport , and I wasn’t able to give her a tip

The staff were always friendly and helpful and Sabrina did a great job of looking after everyone and made sure that we were always at the right place at the right time. The tours were great and we enjoyed our evenings in the lounge with music and quizzes by Erich. We had a great holiday!

And as the boat moves beyond the liveliness of downtown Vienna with its broad boulevards, parks, and squares along the Danube River banks becomes a serene haven of calm. It’s an idyllic paradise for nature lovers where you can see swimsome ducks, majestic birds of prey soaring high up in the sky above riverside cliffs or spot fish darting by underwater.

What Is a River Cruise?

Aerial view of a Viking river ship sailing past Dürnstein, Austria along the Danube river

Nothing Compares to a River Cruise

River cruising is a relaxing, immersive and thoroughly enjoyable form of travel where you can enjoy ever-changing scenery along the banks of waterways such as the Danube, Rhine, Seine, Douro, Volga and Yangtze. Unpack just once on an award-winning, state-of-the-art 190-guest Longship and journey into the very heart of iconic cities and charming towns.

A river cruise can be defined as:

  • A form of leisure travel that takes guests along inland waterways.
  • Usually there are several port stops over the course of each passage.
  • Typical river cruises often last longer than a week.
  • Carry anywhere from 100 to 250 guests, depending on the ship size.
  • Are popular on many of the world’s major rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Volga and Yangtze.

Explore the world’s great cities

The most cosmopolitan cities developed along the rivers, the world’s first trade routes. From iconic “must-sees” like Paris, Amsterdam and Budapest to quaint villages and towns waiting to be discovered, a river provides you easy access to savor the delights of both. Cities like Berlin, Lisbon, Prague, Vienna, Moscow, Cairo and Beijing are just a few that are accessible on a river cruise. In addition to the rivers listed above, cruises along lesser-known rivers like the Mekong in Southeast Asia and the Main in Germany are options.

What to Expect on a River Cruise

While river cruises can be enjoyed by people of all ages, they generally appeal to people more advanced in age -- baby boomers, in particular. Many river cruise lines allow children aboard their ships, although they may have age restrictions in place and usually there isn't much for kids to do. The makeup of a liner can include people of a wide range of nationalities, but more often than not, guests come from English-speaking countries.

Best Times to Go

Whether you choose to travel in the on-season or the off-season, you’ll be able to gain a deep cultural experience in each of your destinations. In the spring and summer, you may witness local outdoor events and lively activities that only occur during the warmer months of the year. Cooler weather in the fall may mean you’ll run into fewer people in the streets of cities and ports you visit, which will allow you to take your time and get a closer look at sites that interest you without feeling rushed or crowded. And in the winter season, you’ll be delighted by festive Christmas markets and enchanted by the holiday traditions and celebrations of the locals.

What You Should Pack

Given that weather will be variable depending on where your river cruise takes you, bringing along both warm and light clothes is wise. Even during warm months, there is wind on the rivers, so it’s best to plan for layers even if the weather is hot. Additionally, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, so bring along comfortable shoes. Lastly, pack some dressier clothes in case you attend a formal event while visiting one of your cruise destinations.

How They Differ from Ocean Cruises

Although river cruises and ocean cruises share a number of similarities, there are also various—and considerable—differences between the two. For one, ocean liners are bigger and offer more stateroom accommodations on average. Appropriately, they’re able to host significantly more guests. The smaller scale of river ships means fewer guests, but more opportunities to get to know fellow travelers, which often lead to lifelong friendships.

In contrast to ocean cruises that may include multiple sea days, you will rarely experience a full day of sailing on a river cruise. Typically, guests will awake each morning to find themselves in a new port. With river cruising, you can also enjoy an ever-changing mural of breathtaking scenery from your ship, so the journey itself becomes part of your discovery.

For those without sea legs, river cruises have the advantage of smooth trekking, shallow waters and the gift of land that’s always in sight. Lastly, most river cruises offer inclusive value, meaning your Wi-Fi, water, alcohol and included excursions are covered in the price. However, ocean cruises tend to offer more upscale amenities, like fitness centers, multiple dining options and a variety of live entertainment.

Who Would Enjoy a River Cruise?

River cruises are great for everyone, especially those desiring a more relaxed and intimate form of travel. Individuals who've never stepped foot on a ship before will enjoy the relative ease of a river-bound trip with little chance of seasickness. Furthermore, with a focus on cultural exploration of locations, river cruises are perfect for those with a curiosity about art and history, or a general interest in travel.  Every river is unique and each tells a different story—not only of the countries through which it flows, but also of its locks, canals, scenery and bridges.
